I would disagree with the person who said PSYC 100 and 102 aren't difficult. Sure, the material is easy to understand, but given the amount of stuff you have to know, it's not easy to retain. Alder does a great job at delivering *most* of it and explaining it well.
Man. The final had NOTHING to do with the course. I hope grades are curved.

Hes a great teacher.. Keeps the lectures fun and interesting. I actually wanted to be there

psyc is a joke...strives to be a science but fails miserably. Needlessly complex, disjointed explanations of very simple processes/observations. Alder is a fine prof, but so far as course content goes, this one comes up short. And what was up with the picture question on the midterm?
Awesome lecturer! Does fun experiments/activities in lecture!
excellent prof, has organized lecture slides which are easy to follow. he really knows his stuff and makes you actually want to attend lecture.
AN EXCELLENT PROF, ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE HAD YET. HE IS VERY ORGANIZED, CLEAR SLIDES, INTERESTING ACTIVITIES, HELPFUL. HIS MIDTERMS ARE FAIR, M/C ARE VERY EZY IF YOU READ THE TEXT YOU'LL DO FINE
All I have to say is that he's good. 'Nuff said.
Anyone know who that was? Who care?!! Whoever they were they sucked!!Doesn't seem to have a deep understanding of the subject. But he's damn pretty!!!He's also rude as he ignores you when you greet him in the hallways. Test require no conceptual grasp just a lot of memorization, not enough time 4test

awesome prof! notes are good/organized... lectures are interesting. his midterms are very fair..and the final was fair too...just read the text throughly and you will do well!

His lecture notes r not quite detailed. U hv 2 make a lot of notes on ur own while u read the txbk cuz itz all examinable! his exams r fair tho, just need lots of memorization skills =) pysc papers r bad, but u hv 2 stick 2 it no matter wut cuz it IS a psyc class; teaches great!! recommended!
Despite the rumors, this class is NOT hard. Anyone who says so should pull their head out of their ass, get a highlighter and read the book. If you don't, prepare to roast, as the lazy schlub just gets the MC from the textbook supplier. And for the love of god, psyc in NOT a science.
He talks fast, only covers the bare bones of the material during lecture. So you will have to do A LOT of reading from the textbook. Exams were fair.
alder's a very organized prof. lecture notes are always posted prior to every lecture. exam marks are returned very promptly. very clear what he expects. exam essay questions are hard to predict and scoring was never usually very high, but m/c is easy. responds to email immediately. good course too, time-consuming, but good.
Sadly, his tests ARE fair. But in the first midterm of the year, the mean score was quite low. He is an organized and clear teacher. I know he can't cover a lot of the material in his lectures but there is too much material to cover in the course, so it is up to you to read the material.
my worst teacher so far... Without his notes he would not be able to teach the class. Very monotone.
Very hard to keep up with the readings and contents. Had to find out things by myself. Jokes once a while which is a good thing but lectures are still very boring.
Good lecture notes but so so overall. It IS an intro class so it’s bound to be boring. One of my most boring classes this semester though.
I think Alder is a pretty nice guy, just the course is so boring I usually just use his lecture as a napping period:P Overall the course is not that bad...except from the research project, VERY time consuming.
He has the most boring lecture that I have and he makes the midterms like he wants his students to fail. The things that he puts a lot of emphasis on so you think it will be important in the midterm isn't. It's not on there at all. What kind of teacher does that?! Obviously, a bad one.
alot of reading, dont fall behind and definitely dont rely on his lecture notes. despite what everyone else says the research paper was quite a breeze...his exams are another story though..very difficult
george is a really great teacher. he adds fun stuff to make the cirriculum and readings not so dull
I don't know what the person 2 spots down is talking about. THey are probably just bitter cause they didn't do well. His exams are SO easy. It's M/C and if you study his notes and read the text, you'll be fine.
Regarding the previous comment: exam difficulty is different for everyone, there is no need to criticize other people for their opinion, thats why it's an opion. Exam difficulty is subjective.
Ok... weird.. his exams are pretty average, there not crazy hard or simple either. The reading isnt too much, the work load was pretty god. Plus hes just an AWSOME guy! lectures are amazing and there always lots of fun. Pretty much didnt want to take psyc before, only because it was a pre req... hes amazing though, thats why im in 102
Psyc was one of the few classes I went to, very interesting and funny, Alder scales the class, so you can't complain if u do bad, just do better then everyone else. Take Psyc with Dr. Alder!

Workload: 2MT (MC+short essay), tutorial presentation (ppt), research paper, final (MC). Lecture notes are online and tests are based on the textbook. Multiple essay topics are available on the midterms. [~]
A fair amount of work (a few projects) and reading, but other than that it's a good class. The final is pretty easy if you do the reading and take some notes.
He's a pretty interesting teacher. Always makes class enjoyable and always seems prepared If you do the readings exams are not to bad.
This professor is okay. Compared to Dr. Day he is a student's dream, so try to take intro psyc with Alder instead of Day.
interesting class
took his class during intersession so the work load was intense but he made it enjoyable. He incoporates interesting extra material into his lectures and his test are fair. If he says the questions are from the book they'll be right out of the book, if he says they're from lecture it will be straight out of lecture.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Worst class ever. What kind of prof is happy with an average of 43% on the first midterm??? Projects suck. Written section of midterms suck. Some material is interesting, but it's such a skim, it's hard to pick up anything valuable.
He's a good prof. The class was fun. He knows what he's talking and prepares all the stuff before class. He includes video and other stuff to make the class more fun.
This professor is one of the hardest professors for PSYC. I can't believe they have such a hard professor for a 100 level course. 1st midterm was 51% average and 2nd was a 60%. TONS of studying to do, don't UNDERESTIMATE THIS COURSE WITH HIM. A lot of memorizing peoples ideas. This will be a BURDEN during your entire term. Think twice b4 signing up
His lectures aren't the best, but he's still a pretty decent teacher
Lectures are boring...and you have to listen to what he says really clearly because his slides are very vague, and you have to add on to his slides almost all the time. But if you study the textbook, you'll be fine. He's a nice guy and good teacher, just quite a boring lecturer
yeah, he's tough but i believe that he's a good professor. his materials were interesting, and he gave us lots of examples. if you are intereseted in psychology as a major, he will be good for you cuz he really encourages us to learn more detailed knowledges. his MC is somewhat tricky and short answers were almost from his lecture notes.
I had Dr. Alder for both psyc 100 and psyc 102. His lectures are awesome. He does his best to make them interesting. Yes his notes are skeletal, but if you go to the lectures and add on to them, you'll have not problems acing the finals. There are no trick questions ever, jusy pay attention and know your stuff!
George is quite a character. He is energetic and his lectures are fun. I didn't like the the testbank, though. The questions are silly and feel ambiguous quite often. Make sure you know your material well and don't over think. For papers, APA is really annoying. ALWAYS get other people from psychology to edit your paper.
He's very energetic, and uses good examples to help you understand and remember the material. There is a lot of work in the class and I didn't enjoy any of the tutorials.
worst prof ever scales the class so do well
Not a fan. Generally pretty boring, found him to be pretty unengaged. Multiple choice taken directly from text. You MUST read the text! Tutorials are DEATH!
He's a fun prof and tries to make lectures exciting and engaging (lots of videos and demonstrations). Read the text and you'll be fine for exams, go to lectures as well and you'll have no trouble acing it!
1st year, 1st sem, great class to take! I loved it. George is an excellent prof. His lectures are very entertaining, except the ones on biology because I took bio 12 so it was all a repeat for me. Besides that, you'll find it easy to get a good grade in this course, just read the text and come to lecture and go to your tutorials; You'll do well
Awesome prof, awesome course! Absolutely loved it, v. engaging lectures w/videos, animations, experiments, jokes, etc. Exams not too difficult, read the textbook though. Highly recommend him!
Great Prof, really clear lectures, tests are fair (although be prepared for the first essay test, thank god for bell curving). Dr. Alder is really helpful, and works hard to make sure people understand the subject matter and take something meaningful away. TA Lyndsay is great, super helpful and a fair marker!
Prof is super nice. Material is boring. best 2 out of 3 midterms. final is EASY! ALL MCs! GPA booster. 2 papers, a presentation. labs/tutorials are BORING.
The lectures are interesting, but he reads of them way too much. Midterms are MC + essay one of 2 topics not very hard but you have to understand the material. The paper is fine but the grade is up to your TA so ask them questions is unclear. The final was not that hard but there were some stupid questions. Overall I liked the class, fun!
Not bad. He makes class quite interesting. The essays on the midterm killed EVERYONE. (avg 40 something percent)Make sure to study very very detailed lecture material for the midterm essays. I've had both this prof and dr. day and i think dr. day is better for psych 100.
MAJORLY IMPORTANT: He takes the prof evaluations very seriously. Make sure you don't rate him as easy otherwise he will make his exams harder the next semester. I had him for Psyc 100 and it was awesome. Then I had him for Psyc 102 and I suffered. It was the essay questions that did me in. He can make them very difficult.
I took his intersection, tired but fast. Show up to the lecture, listen to it but don't have to memorize them, then read the text book WORD BY WORD, you will not get low mark.
A very good teacher. Class was never boring.
I had George for both psyc 100 and 102, and I did well in both courses. Exams are fair, so long as you've done the readings and attended all lectures, and if you're an average or slightly above average student, the scaling will boost your grade up, like it did mine! His lectures are interesting as he incorporates videos, etc into them.
very thorough and really nice!
Cool dude
very nice and fun
funny guy! lectures are never boring
Not a bad prof at all, lectures were interesting with occasional videos. You can pretty much do "ok" in the course by just reading the book, attending lectures will prob get u a bit more marks. What really dragged me down were the random short essay questions in the MTs, cause I think they were just dumb to begin with. Final was fair.
He grades u in terms of "your ranking" in the class, in other words, comparing you with the class to give you your mark. This can be unfair for some that are in the actual higher grade range but get a lower grade instead because of the ranks. Also unfair for the not as smart peoples. But not a bad prof at all!
He is an nice prof. His lectures are organized, interesting and to the point. Exams are very fair, MCs and short essays. Final is ALL MC, quite easy if you have been keeping up with all your readings (reading intensive course!) and chapter quizzes! If you are going to take psyc 100 or 102, Alder is a very good prof. He also records his lectures!
Easy class, recommended. Lectures are informative, barely studied and ended up with B+. Grading is based on how well you do out of all the students, so it may affect your grades.
Excellent professor. Definitely seems to be very intersested in the subject. Course is fairly easy, in fact, I wouldn't mind it being a bit more challenging.
excellent proff ! very clear, interested in his class, lectures are informative and fun ! I would definitely recommend taking this course with him!
Useless prof, big time waster, doesn't teach at all, you have to memorize the text.
He is a great teacher. He has great notes which he also posts, and he records his lectures. I think the clicker quizzes are a great way to make sure we are caught up on the reading. Tests are fairly easy, but because it is so scaled, only 10% get an A... so depending on the people in the class really affect your letter grade.
George is an amazing prof; his lectures are very clear, fun and interesting. This man is hilarious, I swear. He engages the class in many ways - using video clips, etc. He is very concise and straightforward so his class is always let out early. Very highly recommended! Exams are easy.
George is an amazing prof; he keeps the class fun and interesting. Uses video clips, etc to keep students engaged. Oh, this man is hilarious, I swear. And his exams are fairly easy!
This class was not too hard. All you need to do is read A LOT and you should do fine grading on essays pretty tough but it's interesting except for the bio part other than that.
It's a challenging course, in terms of the vocabulary, reading, quizzes and tests. The TM I had was a nightmare, he seemed to have problems with letting students to have good grades on assigments. I thought psychology was fun, but after taking the course I don't know if I wanted to take another one. The essay questions on the midterms are...grrrrr!
Easy course but bell curved so if you're not the cream of the crop..you won't get your desired mark. Midterms are super easy but watch out for the essays. Research paper was easy. Final is 100 M/C fair but can be tricky. Read the textbook, make good notes, use the study guide. Alot of memorization but overall easy course and laid back prof.
Super easy! Has i-clicker quizzes on every chp, which really helps for the tests! Has two basic midterm type tests. If you study you'll ace the class. Final is 100 MC all straight forward questions.
The courses was interesting and the prof is among the most interesting I have ever had here in SFU. He is an awesome prof.
Awesome prof. Do your readings and you'll do well.
Great prof really! Full of energy and really enthusiastic about the course material. Would recommend him to anyone!!You should do the readings, they really help in understanding the material.
George was a great prof! He was very engaging in his lectures. He was also very humorous which kept the lectures entertaining. His powerpoints did not include all the information you needed to know for tests, so make sure you read the textbook. Overall great class!
Honestly, he's a good prof, He's not really helpful but the TAs are nice. Midterms are horrible with the written sections.MCs are manageable. I like the fact that final is only MCs. If you had the choice between Dr Day or Dr Alder, go with Alder, Day's worse!!!
George Alder is a good prof who shows a lot of interest in what he is teaching. His midterms were fair, but the final dropped my grade from an A- to a B+ (darn bellcurve!!). Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this class, other than the fact that it involves a hefty amount of memorization.
Good professor; his class is easy if you study, however, there is a lot to remember for the final, and between your other classes it might not be manageable. Class average was high, so don't expect to get scaled up. Overall great prof!
Don't have to read everything to get an A. Understand all bold terms of the chapters. For iclickers, also read first two sentences of each paragraph. he usually includes a couple questions on them on each quiz. If you have time, read those boxes throughout the chapters, and the end of chapter review boxes.
He's a good prof and keeps the class interesting but he doesn't give a**** about his students so try to avoid asking for help. The m/c part of the exams is easy if you just read the text BUT written portion makes the difference on the midterms and the answers are not in the text and they're in his notes so make sure to go through his notes as well.
Not a bad prof. Midterms and final was pretty easy but the written portions of the mts can be a bit tricky. Project was an utter waste of time, and most of the time you can ignore the lectures and just do the reading and still get an A. Music at the start of class is awful though, so try to be late.
Really great professor. His lectures were very organized and he included a lot of video clips which I found useful.
George is a great prof, especially for your first semester at university. He's funny, friendly, interesting, and uses lots of videos and stuff like that to make everything completely easy to understand. I wish he was my prof for every class.
Probably my favorite prof. His lectures are always interesting and I love how he plays so many movies. Also i love the fact that you can ask him to play your favorite songs at the beginning of class. He played mine and it made my day. Hope I get him for my more advanced courses.
took 2 classes with him and loved it. interesting class and loved to listen to him. alot of reading but its not hard.
Talks waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.
A very nice prof, with clear outlines and the class itself is very straight forward. Every assignment was explained clearly( one hour lecture was dedicated on it) Quizzes were not too bad and he also engaged the class with different demonstrations. Great prof for my first year
Took 100 & 102. Great prof, clear, funny and can really get the material across. If you pay attention in class, read text and do the practice quiz, the class is very easy. Only downside is he's not very approachable and TAs for 100 penalize marks if you use a binder/cover to hold your paper together. Apparently it's "too heavy" to carry. Weak.
He's a good prof, makes lectures quite interesting by showing video clips but you have to study the material in the textbook well for his tests since his mc's can get a little tricky. Basically you don't need to attend lectures since his test questions are mainly from the textbook unless there is iclicker quiz that day.
he is a good professor. the course itself has a lot of content in a lot of different fields and branches, so if there are any criticisms, it would be toward the course rather than the prof. Personally he was entertaining and did a good job of teaching in my opnion
He's an ok prof - his lectures CAN get boring but he shows video clips and tries to be funny. THE ICLICKER QUIZES also can be very tricky, you think you studied the whole chapter. Think again. Midterms - MC is easy, Essay portion is unfair and trips everyone over. Average was like a 65. Basically, this class isnt as easy as you think
He's an ok prof - his lectures CAN get boring. THE ICLICKER QUIZES also can be very tricky, you think you studied the whole chapter. Think again. Midterms - MC is easy, Essay portion is unfair and trips everyone over. Average was like a 65. Basically, this class isnt as easy as you think. BUT I GUESS WAT HE PLAYS KPOP SONGS AT THE START OF CLASS
overall, his course is esay, the hardest part is essay question, which aoucct for around 12%. to nail this course, you have to read through the text book.
Interesting professor. He likes statistics, plays music at the beginning of class, is sometimes funny. Most of the test material is from the textbook, study it thoroughly. Easy course if you keep up with your readings. If not, then kinda difficult. iClickers are tricky.
His course is fair, and he sometimes teaches very fast to catch up his schedule. His midterms are easy, as long as you study the textbook, you can get pretty high grade(but the MC part, the class avg is very high too)I don't know the final yet, but i expect it won't be hard
Very clear on what he wants. Explains the course material in great detail. Quizzes were fair, challenging, and the biweekly/weekly format ensures that you are caught up. Tests were fair. Didn't like the assignments, too arbitrary in its topics. Who you have for a TA will probably affect your assignment mark.
He's funny, course material is interesting, he's clear and is not monotone. Keep up with readings and you're set
He 's a funny professor and make the classes not so boring. The classes performed with many good music and videos. But one thing, his voice isn't clear..by that I mean his speaking is super fast ..
Midterms and weekly quizzes are fair. There are some tricky questions I have gotten incorrect, but that was due to not reading the side blurbs and experiments carefully enough in the textbook. Averages in the class are very low on essays as the topics are kind of tricky, but if you pay attention it's very easy to get in the top 10%.
Overall it is an easy course. He makes the lecture interesting by showing videos and active with the class. Quizzes and exams questions are from the textbook so you need to read the whole chapter. One thing I do not like is he will penalize for the incorrect answer on the midterm and final exams.
Overall, Alder is a good prof. He is tech savy, has a good sense of humor and engages the class. However, be prepared to do all the readings and study a few hours a week, since this class is curved and the exams have a penalty for guessing (a.k.a correction for guessing).
Pretty easy A+. Class is curved, so only 10% get 'A's. Penalty for guessing on Midterms/Final. Quizzes are of good difficulty, exams are fair. Read the textbook, 95% of the material is from the textbook. You're looking at 3 hours a week of out-of-class studying to get at least a B in the class. Not difficult, just broad.
He was alright. He's very knowledgable and informative, but you need a strong attention span to focus in his class. He gave us the advantage of ending the class 20 minutes early, but that only meant he would lecture straight (literally taking no breaths!) Just focus and study hard and you'll do great.
Great prof. He is clear and tells you what to expect on exams. Class is curved and the stupid "correction for guessing" is really frustrating. If you read the textbook and do all his I-clicker quizzes you will be fine.
The questions on quizzes and tests come directly from the textbook so it is a complete waste of time to show up to his lectures. His power points are boring, useless and hard to be interested in. Just read and study the textbook and you'll do alright depending on your interest in psychology. Definitely not an easy A, especially since its curved
Alder was not a very good prof. He had potential, but I think he's been teaching this course for so long that it's at the point where it just seems rehearsed and is boring. The correction for guessing is ridiculous, and makes it next to impossible to do well. I don't recommend him as a teacher
Pretty useless and has a horrible temper. Freaks out on people for stupid things
Notes are no help because they are mostly pictures and 1 or 2 word points meaning you have to study the textbook for quizzes and tests. Classes are boring and correction will ruin your mark. I got an A or B on every assignment including quizzes except for tests b/c of the correction for guessing. Somehow ended up with only a C.. do not recommend
He was super helpful when I went to him with questions however towards the end of the semester I found it hard to take notes from his slides. All the I-clicker questions are from the text. He says all the final questions are from the exam but they are not, some are just from class activities you wouldnt have even taken notes on! So take good notes!
This prof WAS good at some point, judging from past comments. But even from the first day, I could tell that this class would be pretty unbearable. The only professor with a "guessing penalty" imposed on his exams. His notes aren't good to study on their own. Better to teach the course on your own.
Boring lecture and its a pain that his boring lecture is also what the essay topic is gonna be on. The essay topic is unpredictable so make sure to pay attention to the detail of it. Learn from the book like its a bible and the only psyc prof. to give you a guessing penalty. According to him its some students remarks that made him do the penalty.
This prof is awful. You try to study from the textbook and it gets you no where due to his guessing penalty for your exams docking you marks even further. I study my butt off and did great in psych 100 with a different prof yet with him i am failing everything, although it gets curved, still you shouldn't be studying so much and still failing.
The lectures are not that useful and the guessing penalty is the most awful part of the class. But attending his lectures will help you guessing the topic of the essay question. The essay question over his mid-term usually involves remembering what person gave what theory..which I think is a ruthless criteria. But overall, this class was GOOD.
I wish I could have taken PSYC 100 and 102 with a different professor because I did poorly when I know I could have done 10x better. Correction for guessing is unreasonable
I find George to be a funny professor but his lectures are so useless! As long as you keep up with the readings, you can just show up for quizzes/midterms/final and should be able to do well. Lectures are based on everything from the textbook so you're wasting your time if you attend lectures AND read the textbook. Guessing penalty is so annoying.
Nice guy but I wish he got rid of the correction for guessing before it ruined my grade (and GPA)
George Alder seems to be a nice guy, but his lectures are useless. He simply discussed the textbook... VERY briefly. There's no point in attending because you're just going to have to read the whole thing anyways. Easy class, overall.
Pretty easy class. Most of the content covered in lecture comes straight from the textbook so there's really no need to go to lecture. Exams are well related to the text material and fairly straightforward. Good GPA booster!
This course is based off readings from the text. Reading all the chapters is essential to passing the MC based midterms and final. The TA's are tough graders on essays and assignments. The prof tries to be entertaining - he shows a couple of psychology clips here and there. He speaks very quickly and catching up to him is impossible. Read the text!
He used to be well-known for his guessing penalty in multiple choices, which is really annoying. Amazingly, in my semester with him, he cancelled this thing before the final exam which made me started to believe in democracy. Want to get a good grade? Read every single page of the textbook.
George tries his best to make the class interesting. But sometimes some topics can be boring.if you wanna get an A read your text book real good and you will be fine. His TA sucks they can ruin your A as they are the one marking your writing assignments.. be in their good books and may be it will help
Study your textbook and lecture notes. iclicker quizzes very lecture
Easy course overall. I had inter-session course with him so it felt like every assignments and tests are crammed into a short one-month period. Textbook is essential in getting a good grade in this course! Really enjoyed it!
Everyone on here is saying this is an easy class and GPA booster. It isn't. The reason is because only 10% of the class will get A's. I got an B- because I beat out the curve but I do NOT consider that a GPA booster.
Took this course intersession and hated it. You have to read the 50 page chapters with the utmost detail because thats what quizzes and tests are on (meaning lectures are pointless). Its honestly terrible. Don't take this as an elective
Like everyone else has already said, dont bother with this course. You pay $500 to teach yourself since all exam and quiz questions come from your readings. Take CRIM 101, SA 150, LING 100, POL 100, KIN 140, etc if you need an elective
George is nice but this class is sooo boring. Avoid if possible. Relies way too much on the textbook without any real teaching. Bell curve makes it hard to get an A
This guy gives easy questions, all you hv to do is listen to his audio recordings and read ur txt book. Everything on MT are the topics he talked about so no worries 4 surprises.
This class is easy, but kind of boring. Thought I would love it, but Alder spends all of class reading off of slides and doesn't talk much at all about examined material. Read the textbook and you'll do well. Tests are almost every which is kind of annoying, but they were fairly easy. Only 10 percent of class gets an A but its an easy B if you try
This is university you're not paying for instruction you're paying for the grade and if you want to do well you need to read the entire textbook and teach yourself. Great guy and a fairly easy course if you put the time in. A lot of reading for a 100 level. Grades on a curve so half the class gets above a C, half below.
Alder is a great prof. Textbook is a must as quizzes are based off of it. His lectures are interesting, and the class itself has some good material. Not a difficult class. I studied for the final the morning of the exam and ended with an A-.
So the textbook is a must. Really his quizzes are straight textbook, studying out of his notes are useless. Really easy exams class average is usally around 65-70. You really don't need to show up and as long as u beat average enough you have a b, just tough to be in top 10 percent for a, if you need a b or b+ not that tough
Read the textbook, and look at his slides. Terms/theories memorization is essential. Quizzes every week. Overall easy. Short answer component of tests are rather difficult (unless you are very familiar with the topics he selected). Attendance is not mandatory because audio/slides are provided online. 40pgs of textbook per chapter = lots of reading
Super easy class! Lots of reading and memorization, I'd recommend going to class if you don't wanna read all 40 pages of a chapter. He discusses components from the chapters, but doesn't put them on slides. Overall, I would recommend!
Everything is very straight forward. Just read the textbook and show up once a week to do the iclicker quiz and you will be fine. Watch out for the written section for the mid terms. They screwed my mark over so much
Talks pretty fast during lecture. However his notes are organized but do not touch on everything covered on the exams/quizzes. To get a really good grade in this course, study the textbook closely as the multiple choice questions are based off the textbook. Information learned off the lectures help with the essay questions.
Gave iClicker quizzes in each week's class that were confusing. Lots to read with several answers being correct, but his opinion would trump all else. He rushed through lectures so we were always out 20 minutes early (not a good thing in this class). Pretty cool guy though; he played music at the beginning of every class and had a sense of humour.
Pretty good experience, the quizzes are worth a great portion of your grade and they're tricky you have to read the textbook to get all the answers. Hes a good prof!
I-clicker quiz is not easy, but there is no midterm for the course, just the final quiz. Assignments are summery which is not hard to get marks. The experiment is the main project of the course, yet should get good mark if you spend time doing it.
This course is a lot of work. While attending lectures isn't mandatory except for the iclicker quizzes, attending tutorial is important for help with the project which you work on all term long. The material was pretty dry. Hard to do well on quizzes.
lectures are suppper boring I only went in the beginning of class to do the iclicker quizzes and then left. Basically read the textbook and you'll do fine!
George was okay. Lectures were pretty boring. The material was very dry. Read the textbook and you'll do fine.
dislike this class
Midterms are tough. Essay question is marked very hard because of the TA's. READ THE TEXTBOOK - ALL OF IT... even the little side boxes that are trying to be funny and if you think they are pointless they aren't because they show up on the midterm. Also things he talks about in lecture that aren't in text are on tests.
If you want easy credit, this is not the class to take. You gotta read the textbook and memorize almost everything. You have to go to the lecture because he texts you on something that only comes up during lecture.
Alder I found to be a very good prof! iclicker quizzes are a great way to boost your mark, and the one assignment you have to do is EASY. A great course everyone should take it, but go to lecture because he takes his essay questions from videos he shows in lecture, and quizzes are based on the textbook
Hawaiian Dad with cool music. You'll do fairly well if you read the textbooks and assigned readings! Lots of iclicker quizzes that are easy marks.
Material is interesting, be prepared to be doing something for this class every week. Something as in assignments, iclicker quizzes, midterm1, midterm 2, final. This is a first year course, but it feels like a 3rd year course. Demands way too much from students. Majority don't only have this 1 course to worry about. LOTS OF READING. TAs mark HARD.
George was honestly one of my favorite profs this semester. His lectures are dry at times but he keeps you focused with interesting facts and videos. If you are a business student I would highly recommend this course. Talking to other business students in psyc 100 they are all doing really well, some of the material even transfers over to bus 201.
be prepare to read a lot because the iclicker quizzes (that happens every 1 or 2 weeks) are based off of the readings. There was only one assignment for this course, very easy but you have to start early because finding the articles were a pain and TAs were hard markers. didn't do too well on that assignment cause I left it to the left minute.
As much as Alder's "likeable" factor, due to his occasional joke throughout lecture and goofy hawaiian shirts, I can't give him a glorifying review as to his poor teaching skills. The material is lengthy so Alder probably speaks about 30 wordssecond. His two hour lectures are unbearable and there are no room for questions & TAs grade crazy hard :(
Pretty straight forward class. Alder was funny and a pretty interesting lecturer. Material is straight out of the book, and he doesn't mark the assignment too hard. Study well and the quizzes and midterms will be fine.
His class was useless & not necessary to attend to pass. Textbooks are SOOO important and each chapter long but at least the material is interesting. Midterms & finals were fair, MC's were 50% situational & 50% straight from the textbook. The assignment was simple just basic research & highlighting. Easy A if you actually put in the effort & time.
George is an awesome prof. Pretty interesting material. The TA's unfortunately ruin it for the students in terms of the brutally hard marking. Read the textbook, all the questions are taken from there for tests. iClicker quizzes are super helpful in keeping you up to speed. Again, read the textbook! Tests: 2 midterms and a MC final.
In the cracks of Mauna Loa, Alder was forged by the hands of the Dark Lord Freudian. Alder seduces you with his Hawaiian shirts, alluring voice, and music (chosen by the students, for the students). This man has the voice of God. I'm not even in PSYC 100 and I attended all the lectures, just for the heck of it. Alder is my preciousssss....
the material for this course is dry as f. weekly quizzes are fair, your mark will really depend on who you T.A is.
Yes-201 is dry & uninteresting, but the skills you learn are invaluable. Profs can only do so much to make boring content better. He presented material clearly, and would answer any questions. He's good at summarizing what you need to know He also made jokes sometimes which made class better. This class is A LOT of work, but it is all fair.
Although the class is a lot of work, it is very fair. Weekly quizzes are all from the textbook. Tutorials are very helpful for the project. His notes and lectures and overall class is very straightforward.
Lectures are stressful because he goes amazingly fast through the material so its extremely hard to write down what he says. Which is important as you are tested on lecture notes in essay question form on exams. A lot of work! iclicker quizes every second class, long chapters to read constantly and the most pointless assignment I have even done.
not bad, pretty clear
His tests are very fair. You need to either make extensive notes in class, or re-listen to the lecture recording and write down all his explanations, makes the topic a lot easier to understand. He makes some hilariously dark jokes, and he's just an overall great guy.
I took my first psych class with him and currently taking my second one with him as well. Tests are fair, easy assignments, easy marks. Participation credit is annoying, iclicker quizzes force you to read the chapters so you don't fail miserably on midterms. Great prof, will answer any questions you have, tries to make boring content bearable.
He's a great guy, does a great job at keeping the lectures short and concise. He doesn't go off topic. Nice guy, great music. His tests are never random -- everything is either off the lecture slides or stuff he says. He takes his notes from the book; however, you don't really need the book yourself. It's nice to have as insurance to a good grade.
Can't say anything bad about George. His lectures are nothing special, but he has a good sense of humour and uses research examples to make concepts easy to understand. The course itself isn't too difficult aside from the research project, so as long as you read the textbook you'll be good to go.
I took the two hour/one class and its waaaaaaay better than a three hour class. There are a lot of iclicker tests, but they aren't hard if you have read the chapter. George is super helpful if you take time to go to office hour. He does talk fast but he also posts the slide. for this class there are a couple profs, but take this class with him.
George is funny. That's his only saving grace in my opinion. He rushes through lectures; the only reason I stayed for them is because I paid a lot of money to be there. The cumulative quiz is a joke. It's 70+ questions with lengthy scenarios, and you only get 90 minutes to do it. Get ready to teach yourself, and hope like hell you have a good TA.
Pretty funny guy. This is a great first year student course as the work load isn't too heavy, but there is still a decent amount of work. Interesting material, good intro to future psychology courses.
His lecture is boring and useless, almost half of the class leave right after the i-clicker quiz. And the i-clicker quiz is ridiculous, it is not easy at all. Also, the marking scheme of the writing assignment is so tough, you won't be able to achieve full marks for your homework. However, the research project is easy. Good luck!
He's a good prof but he gives very little time to do the tests, which are often situational. It's not all about memorization and he is very specific with what he wants in the essays. You must read on your own.
Good professor. No midterm or Final just weekly quizzes and a final "quiz". The tutorial portion has a semester research paper due which is a lot of fun. Weekly outlines and due dates helps you not procrastinate for the research paper.
Lecture's went fast and were easy to understand. Has a good sense of humor. May talk a bit fast during lectures but it is recorded. Made it interesting with example and overall was an excellent prof. There are quizzes every week but no midterm for this class.
The teacher is amazing, really cool and chill professor. He is very helpful. But, my tip for you who wants to take this course choose your TA wisely!!!
Lectures felt really long, gives weekly quizzes so reading textbook is a must. I felt the course overall was a little rushed; besides weekly quizzes, an assignment is due every 3 weeks or so + a final project to worry about. Given the heavy workload, I don't recommend taking this course if you have 3 other courses the same semester. Go to labs!
Great guy. He wears those Hawaii shirts and he always plays music before class (even edm before an in-class). Kept lectures interesting with vids, demos/experiments! READ THE TEXTBOOK. Best 5 of 6 quizzes+ tests+2 in-classes+1 really easy assignment+3hrs RP. Easy content, just found the top 10%A grade very competitive. Super organized too w/notes
Solid choice for PSYC 100. The course has a lot of memorization, so I found the 4 term tests much more manageable than cramming for a cumulative final. Got a kick out of his goofy Hawaiian shirts and the way he says "aaaaaand". Seriously though, good prof - would take another course with him again.
Not a hard course. Not too interesting but it's easy. Main focus is good Tutorials, TA and a good simple research project you choose. Dont delay the project it's a decent amount of work. Lectures have small easy quizzes at the start. Final Quiz (no exams) was very easy.
6 iClicker quizzes (your best 5 count), 4 exams (2 of them include essay questions). Essay questions were tough, but it's a curved class. Read the textbook and either show up to class or listen to the lecture recording since he sometimes includes questions about material that isn't in the book. MC questions were pretty fair.
Easy class if you want a GPA booster. He is a great professor. Assignments are all easy to complete and easily marked. Great professor. If you don't want to attend class, don't ! he posts all lecture slides and audio recordings of his lectures. Would highly reccomend.
He's cool. Not much interaction since it's a large intro course. The material is straight forward and follows the textbook. Test questions were easy, noncumulative and similar to ones in textbook. People did badly on the short answer questions so if you want a good mark, write thoroughly. Know the people and their theories.
Very fair exams. Nice guy. No complaints. Recommend.
Lectures were dry and painful to sit through. I stopped attending due to this. I did still receive a decent grade, but make sure you read the text word-for-word to keep up, and it took about an hour and half per chapter to read. Essay marking was BRUTAL; approx. 33% class average for both. It was hard to get decent marks on in-class writes as well.
Pretty easy course. First and last test solely based on textbook, second and third test MC q's from the text, and essay question from lecture notes not mentioned in the textbook. Lecture and audio are both posted so attendance isn't mandatory. Essays and in-class assignments were marked very hard though. Quizzes were easy if you read the textbook.
Funny and chill prof. No complaints. Explains everything really well. Clicker quizzes are annoying though so be prepared to stress about those.
Clear lectures and quizzes aren't that difficult. Very clear about what he expects. One of my favorite profs so far at SFU.
Grades are calculated using the curve. Your TA does all of the marking and therefore your grades depend on them. Every class there is a 12 question i-clicker quiz on the previous chapter. Not difficult if you read the chapter and go over the notes. Profs lectures can be a little boring. Very informative class though.
Lectures are pretty boring but they can be helpful in understanding the material. Weekly iclicker quizzes can be tough but the research project and writing assignments were easy. Honestly depends on your TA as they do all the marking, so go get their help on the project. Lots of work in the class but a good grade can be achieved.
Quizzes are based on the textbook but lectures are useful when you're confused about the material. Really nice prof, and definitely has a good sense of humor which makes class enjoyable. TA's mark all your writing, so make sure you get help when needed and understand what they are looking for. Overall, fun class if you're interested in psyc
Lectures and readings are pretty dry. Iclicker quizes every week and the questions can be pretty long and tricky. If you read the textbook and do the questions you should be fine. The research project is a lot of work but not that bad. Go to tutorial also.
Dry class, but info was super informative; I really feel like I learned a lot. Weekly quizzes that aren't too bad, but contain some long questions that are sometimes nasty. Online assignments were clear and easy, just MAKE SURE you respect the word limit. Project was decent, just give yourself enough time to do it w/o stress and you'll do great.
Weekly quiz questions can be specific so make sure you do the textbook readings. Written assignments are straightforward and fair. The research paper is time-consuming, but not difficult if you complete all of the required components. TA Trishia was very helpful and accessible. Final exam is hard, but class is scaled so still possible to do well.
George Alder is a good prof. He is funny, and is helpful during office hours. He post all his lecture slides online, and does a decent job explaining topics in class. Lecture content is heavy, and goes by slides go by quickly. Weekly iclicker tests can be tricky at times. Test are all based off the textbook, and are easy if you study.
The multiple choice for this course was very fair; based right out of the textbook, not his lecture slides. The writing assignments were a little ridiculous, requiring every possible little detail to score marks. Bell curved course, so hope that you're above the curve. The lectures were fast paced, and went through material very quickly.
Weekly quizzes, he tries to scare you with the scaled class but usually works in your favour. You could never go to class, but as long as you read the textbook and know the concepts you'll ace the quizzes and the final quiz. The research project was fun but requires a lot of work.
loved the class, had to listen to lectures and read text book but was a fair marker. funny in class and easy to understand.
a really good course to take out of high school exams are straight out of launchpad and textbook no tricks material can be dry but he tries his best to engage his students class is curved very endearing and i would highly recommend him for any course course has heavy reading and memorization but exams are MC drops lowest quiz mark
i've read the entire textbook for this class. His questions are based on the textbook. His lectures are pretty useless for the term tests unless you like hearing his voice or something.
easy class. just read the book and listen to the lectures at home. it's easy to do well. Funny guy and does engage the class with examples from the real world
I LOVED Dr. Alder! He's engaging, doesn't just read straight of the slides like most profs and pokes lots of jokes. He tells you what to expect and has a great anonymous online platform he uses so that people can ask him questions any time, which he answers in class. He also gives class averages and all that after each test which is nice! Taught
very boring lectures that are not informative at all. His voice is like is like listening to Siri giving a lecture for 2 whole hours. Make sure you read the textbook because he can't provide that information in his lectures for some reason. Nice shirts tho.
Entertaining lectures, passionate about teaching, very understanding with emergencies, all around a super chill dude.
Funny prof and does deliver lectures well but the material is dry so the lectures aren't that interesting. The exams are based off of the textbook and sometimes has stuff from the lecture notes. Read the textbook and memorize terms through Quizlet and you'll be fine.
No midterm or final, there are only 4 term tests which is really nice as you dont have to remember massive amounts of information. He goes kind of fast through lectures so I suggest writing the lecture notes down before class, & reading the textbook chapter. this way you'll be prepared and actually benefit from his lectures.
George is a really cool and funny prof, but the class material is super dry... TAs are also really hard graders, class averages for test essays were always low. The textbook is really boring but you have to read it to get a decent mark in this class
He is good and a funny prof!Be ready to do a lot of reading, chapters are long and text book has a lot of memorization.i-clicker quizzes and exams are really based on understanding the concept ( he gives scenarios on all MC questions). there is no final exam for this course only 4 term exam. TA's mark really hard especially on essay questions.
Good course if you like psychology. There is alot of reading to do, and lectures are reccommended but you could get by with just reading the book. He marks cumulative so it works in your favour usually. All the TA's do the marking, so use them for feedback. Does actually care about his students as he has an online source where you can ask Q's.
Adler posts lecture slides online so you're able to access it; he will show videos and give funny examples. Lecture slides are useless for the term test BUT useful for the 10-questions-i-clicker quizzes and that's it. TRUST ME WHEN I SAY YOU NEED TO READ THE TEXTBOOK IF YOU WANT THAT B+ AND ABOVE. You can ask anyone who has taken this course!
He is a Great prof, a lot of reading to do but getting an A or a B is defiantly doable in this class. He marks you based on many things so there is always room for you to make up.
an iclicker quiz per chapter and test every two chapters so keeping up with the material is essential (there's no final however). You have to read the textbook in order to do well on the tests!!
Be prepared to read because this course contains heavy reading! The professor is very knowledgeable and answers questions before class. The TA's are also heavy markers so be prepared to study extra hard for those written assignments. There is also an extra 6% in credit if you attend the research participation (optional).
Alder was entertaining and personable, but the course itself was mediocre and non-engaging (not really surprising though since it's an intro class). 100% read the textbook to do well on the term tests! Not a terribly difficult class, as long as you read the material and pay attention during lecture as he does explain concepts pretty well.
I loved this proff! He was super organized. He spoke through the course in such a proper way where he would go in steps and it was not confusing at all. He never skipped things, he knew his stuff really well and made it interesting. He also posts his lectures up. He jokes around a lot. Some how he kept all 300 of us laughing. totally recommend
I loved this proff! He was super organized. He spoke through the course in such a proper way where he would go in steps and it was not confusing at all. He never skipped things, he knew his stuff, he jokes around a lot. Some how he kept all 300 of us laughing. totally recommend
He was a competent prof, didn't really like the grading system he uses (only top 10% of the class can get an A) if you're only aiming for a B/C you can easily achieve it. He doesn't cover everything in class, so it's essential that you go and read the material. Attendance optional except for scheduled quizzes/tests, all notes in class posted online
He really just summarizes the textbook but you need to come to class for quizzes and tests. You will do better when attending lecture but its not crucial. Decent choice, seemed alittle bored sometimes but is a funn chill guy.
PSYC100 He talks EXTREMELY fast, and has no regards to answering questions during the lecture. He makes students submit questions through an anonymous q&a portal, then he'll choose what to answer next lecture. He once dismissed our class 50 minutes early because his computer crashed, we had a quiz coming next lecture.
He is an awesome prof with a lot of knowledge and experience to offer. He has been teaching psyc since before you all were born. Make sure to keep up with the weekly quizzes, start the project early on semester, you will be just fine. His TA choices are not always great however.
George is an entertaining prof and explains concepts clearly. Always willing to help. The questions for his iclicker quizzes are weird, almost like you need to be in his head to get the right answer. I read the textbook for them and still got around 90% for the quizzes tho. 75% of the marks are from the TAs so ur grades depend on them.
Read the text book to succeed in the i clicker quizzes! Attend ALL lecture & tutorials, and it's not hard to do well on your study which is a grade booster if you get feedback from the TA along the way. Kristina was great. Biggest tip to do well in this class is stay on top of readings!
Psyc100 is basically a grade 12 level course in terms of content and difficulty. There was 4 "term tests" throughout the semester but no midterm or final exam. Before each test, there would be 1 or 2 i-clicker quizzes to prep you. George was very engaging and made lectures fun. The content was also interesting so that helped a lot.
I'm a sophomore CS student, and by far this guy's the best prof I've had at SFU. I took this for my b-soc requirement and do not regret it.
Poor choice of textbook (unconcise). Never bothers to include links in emails, prompting hundreds of students to waste several seconds. Most of the experiments are flawed (strong lurking variables and correlations to them). Prof does not have the courtesy to remind us of a test 7 days away. Time investment is high for knowledge gainied
Rude and uptight for an intro class. He didn't care about student's concerns. I think he feels teaching this class was beneath him. He expected nothing less that perfection for assignments and he was not lenient at all with students even amid the COVID 19 crisis. I'm not pleased with how this professor acted, he expects more than 200 level profs.
If you're thinking of taking PSYC 100 as an elective, don't take it with him as he grades on the bell curve (Top 10% get A's, 40% get B's, 50% get C's) which really makes you have to put in effort to be in the top percentile (not worth as an elective). His lectures are engaging, and iClicker quizzes are good for tests. No final, but 4 midterms.
This class has taken years off my life. The marking is incredibly harsh (the class average on an assignment was a 55%), and the instructions for assignments are weird and hard to parse. To be fair, the textbook is fine to read and the weekly quizzes are fair if you do the reading, but the written assignments are impossible. AVOID THIS CLASS!!!
Dr. Alder is kind, but he assigns a lot of reading to accompany his lectures, which usually don't provide much extra information. I think that he is a good professor, but hasn't yet adapted to the online environment, making it very hard to use his lecture materials (which often don't work properly). He has a weekly MC quiz & bi-weekly MC term tests
One of the worst profs I have ever had. The marking is very harsh and he expects perfection from his students. He does not have the student's best interest in mind. We raised concerns about class material/ how low the average of the class was and instead of taking criticism, he acted as if we were beneath him. 10/10 would not recommend to anyone.
I would rate Alder as a mediocre prof. His recorded lectures are really bad quality and cut off at weird times, but as long as you do your reading (roughly 40 pages a week) you will be pretty prepared for the weekly quizes and biweekly tests. His live lectures are pretty good and he has kahoots every week which are good practice for the tests.
This man is inconsiderate and does not care for students. His tests are unfair. You have paragraph-long questions with only 1-2 mins per question. You don't even have time to understand the question. AVOID IF YOU VALUE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.
his quizzes have nothing to do with the course, it is so messed up. but term tests are easier
A first-year psychology class graded on a bell curve, with the reasoning that "large classes use normative grading". I've taken stat classes even bigger than this one, not on a curve. Don't bother watching his lectures, everything's based on the textbook. Exam questions are insanely confusing and his TAs mark unfairly. NOT a GPA booster.
Alder is a nice guy, prompt in his email replies, but does not care. His TA's do all the marking, which is normal in most large classes, however, they all mark very unfairly, provide little to no feedback. The real issue is, he grades on the curve. not good for elective/GPA booster.
The professor is pretty nice. However, this class is based on normative grading. I find it a bit unfair, because we have like 4 different TAs, and each of them assigned a different amount of work throughout the course. The amount of work and how hard the TA grades vary, I think this is unfair towards the grading system. The tests are alright tho.
He grades on the curve, so even if you get below avg on one quiz, you're done for. His TA's are very slow, but it was a large class. It is evident he doesn't really care about his students, and his lectures are not good. Get ready to read 50 pages per week and take notes. But he is prompt in his email replies, and I believe he's a nice guy.
A LOT of reading each week, avg of 40 pages. However, if you make extensive notes on the textbook work (i didnt watch lecs at all) you'll be fine. I got 40% on a quiz and still managed to get an A on the curve, so top 10%. however, his TAs do fluctuate. in marking assignments :/
He seems like a nice guy in his live lectures that just reviewed what was due that week. His actual recorded lectures with course content were terribly made with painful quality sound and he didn't put much effort to fix it. Quizzes and tests were fine if you read the textbook. LOTS of textbook pages to read each week (50+ pages) with weekly quiz.
The class itself was fairly easy, just a lot of reading and taking notes. Only the top 10% of the class got As. His lectures were a bit painful to sit through since the software he used was very hard to navigate.
I couldn't even get through 2 weeks of his psych 100 class. He is not well organized for online covid classes and seems to have a lot of difficulty with technology. (ex, asking his TA's why the chat box on zoom is popping up). The software he chose to deliver lectures was terrible to work with and not worth the amount of effort it took to keep up
His lectures were basically repeating what was in the textbook so they are not necessary. His tests are all multiple choice but they really make you think. This class was pretty boring, all I did was read the textbook and take the tests.
This class was taken online, so I had no personal connection with Alder. All the marking is fair, as the TA's do it all. If you get an unfair TA then the assignments may be tough. This had to be the worst class I have ever taken, but if you are a PSYC major it's unavoidable. The final exam should be illegal - 75 questions, paragraph form. Good luck
George is one of the better choices for PSYC 100. He keeps class interesting with stories and jokes while giving fun facts and personal stories. He knows what he's talking about and gives useful information for the tests during lectures. You will need to read the textbook for each chapter, but that's just because of how big of a course PSYC 100 is.
He is cool but talks way to fast and you have to do a lot of textbook reading.
Best professor ever! Responds to emails fast, has 4 term tests and a multiple choice quiz weekly. You can't go wrong with taking his class, it's pretty easy but you can't slack and expect an A.
Honestly, He's such a nice and funny type of prof. You can tell he really loves what he's teaching and he makes the class super engaging and fun. If you just read the textbook chapters you should be fine for the tests he gives, and tests are super fair. Overall a cool guy and a great prof:) Just be sure not to skip Iclicker quiz classes!
george was an alright prof but the TA's marked really hard on the essay portions of tests and course. practice tests provided online did not help with preparation for the test and lectures are pointless, you learn more from the textbook.
Funny prof. Lectures are useless and everything is based on the textbook.
Took this class as a distance education class. Professor Alder did not teach this class, only the tm did. Weekly quizzes were extremely difficult and confusing. There are 3 papers which were difficult to do. Overall, I would not recommend taking this class in distance education.
George does a good job of making this class as interesting as it can be which is difficult. The four writing assignments seem straight forward but the TAs mark very hard so be careful. He says there is no final but there basically is with the 7o question cumulative quiz in the last class.
I enjoy the efficiency of the TA, however, the cumulative test from this course is going to struck you in the back of your head if you're not prepared to read long excerpts that is irrelevant to your textbook.
Took this class online, Professor Alder did not teach this class (the TM did). The course outline masks the final exam as a "cumulative quiz" while in reality it is 75 questions with multiple paragraphs that do not remotely resemble the weekly quizzes. TM is completely absent -- hasn't marked a whole bunch of assignments. Horrific experience.
Four written assignments, a massive research project, weekly quizzes, cumulative "quiz" which is more like a final. This class has a lot of WORK. if you're willing to put in the work, you'll be fine. However, as we transition back to in-person, the research project and quiz were on the same day - not cool. Prof is great but TA's determine your fate
did not hear from the prof once in this course, it was completely graded by the TA, she even did the lectures and office hours. Also, there is a 25% deduction of marks for assignments if it's late... even by an hour. Hope they're paying the TA the profs salary because the prof is a joke.
Alder is absent from the 201W OLC - your mark is determined entirely by the TM. Weekly quizzes, 2 papers summarizing convoluted psych studies, a 3-part paper (that's mostly a literature review), and a dreaded 75-q final. Questions were written in PARAGRAPH FORM, answers MC. Understand the concepts more than just vocab. Still ridiculously difficult.
Funny guy and great prof; the course is fairly simple if you pay attention to lectures. I found that I didn't need the textbook as long as I took notes during lectures. Graded with weekly iclicker quizzes, 4 tests, and a few assignments that seem simple, but TAs will make or break your mark.
AVOID taking this course with him. Literally the worst experience I've had at SFU. The late penalty is 25% per day for assignments which is ridiculous given that all assigned material is due on the same day of the week. The prof is not understanding whatsoever, so if you're thinking of asking for an extension on something for ANY reason, forget it.
Alder doesn't teach the online class his TM do. We actually didn't hear from him till the end of the semester where he sent an email of our grades and emphasized NOT to email him. The online course uses APA 6 when APA 7 should be taught so there was confusion there. Overall, he's a dud unfortunately.
Overall great class. Concepts pretty simple tests and quizzes were fair and straight forward. So midterm or final just 4 term tests. if you pay attention during lecture then you dont even need to read the textbook. My only complainet would be sometimes he can 6talk a little fast
Funny guy, just lectures. Stingy with grades, only top 10% (15 people) get any version of an A. 54% of your grade (writing) is at the mercy of the TAs, who were all inconsistent in their marking & leniency. With only 15 ppl getting As every point counts, so your TA will make or break you. Quizzes are textbook based, and DO his practice final.
Dr. Alder is a good professor and his lectures are good. You need to read the textbook a fair amount as the lectures don't provide you with everything you need for the tests. The Ta's mark fairly hard so make sure you can write well. Overall good class.
Proffessor Adler was a classic proffessor. The class was not super hard but, you need to know everything from the textbook. The iclicker quizzes aren't bad as long as you do your readings. Really, to be successful in the class, just read the textbook, his lectures cover most stuff but you get tested on stuff he doesn't talk about quite often.
Psychology with George is generally enjoyable. As long as you read the chapter you should do well on the Iclicker quizzes. The lectures are not super useful but good to sit through. The cumulative quiz is quite tough since it includes all concepts learned. The T.A.'s marking sometimes seems inconsistent so can be tough. The curve was quite unfair.
Unless you type 250WPM, don't set your note-taking expectations too high in his lecture classes-- he will change his slides before you can blink, and I'm quite a fast typer. His lectures are relatively interesting, however much of the information he speaks about are in the text, so going to his lectures isn't necessary. Funny guy tho.
All the in-person lectures were full and I had to take the course online. There was 0 contact with this professor, and lectures were just a review to prepare you for what you need to read in the textbook. I felt bad for the TA because he had to read so many papers and do all the marking while the prof was basically absent. The quizzes are not fun
Dr. Alder is a good prof. 8 quizzes(weekly + 2 lowest quizzes are dropped), 2 in-class written assignments (not too hard), 4 tests (each test is based on 2 chps), research project which was easy. No final or midterm. Tips: READ THE TEXTBOOK (quizzes & tests are from textbook). DONT buy the remote(prof will give scantron just say u forgot ur remote)
All quiz answers are from the textbook and very fair. If you keep up with studying and reading the textbook you'll do fine. Lots of chances to get a better grade since there are 4 term tests, easy writing assignments, and weekly quizzes.
Lot's of tests and quizzes. READ THE TEXTBOOK. The quizzes were mainly based off the textbook and not the lectures.
study the textbook bro.
This is the worst professor i've ever had.He is a really tough grader and docks an insane amount of marks for small mistakes. His i-clicker quiz questions are extremely hard even with the textbook readings done. I did all the readings and still got an average of 6/10 on his quizzes. He talks way too fast in lectures and doesnt let you catch up.
I've never hated my life more. This man is the downfall of my mental health. His lectures are pretty much useless. I recommend just skipping them and instead using the time to take notes from the textbook. also the slides are posted online so instead of rushing to write them, just write the points he talks about. Wouldn't recommend.
i would say to take him as a professor, no point in going to lectures, read of the textbook all answers are from the textbook. Quizzes weekly, usually based on his powerpoints. If you put the work in, you can easily get a B !
Funny guy. He talk waaay too fast though. If you don't read the textbook you won't do well. He says you don't need to make flashcards but I thought they were really helpful. 10/10 fashion game. He explains concepts pretty well but you seriously HAVE to read the text.
Talks extremely fast during lectures so it is difficult to take notes. Does not give breaks in long lectures. Tends to end lectures early without covering all necessary material. Unwilling to change teaching style to improve student learning. Textbook is definitely more reliable than the PowerPoints for studying. Would not recommend.
he talks really fast during lectures so I don't recommend trying to type everything out because you will focus more on writing rather than what he's saying. you're bearer off writing notes on his lecture slides of just what he adds to what is already on the slides your grade is basically dependant on who your TA is
Talks too fast in lectures. Someone brought it up and he said it's an average speed and that he wouldn't change it. There was an option to write answers on paper for quizzes, so iClickers aren't really necessary if you don't want to spend $50 (you can just pretend you forgot it). Pretty funny guy. Nice Hawaiian shirts.
George makes me feel like I am being lectured by my grandpa (in a good way) I don't think he talks fast; his slides are pretty easy to follow. He is clear about what the essay questions are about on the midterms. He is funny, I like that he tries to connect with his students. Read the textbook and do the flashcards in the textbook. It is not hard.
I put the bare minimum into this class and I scraped by pretty well. His lecture slides are always on canvas. I read the textbook for the first test and did horribly on it, I never read the textbook ever again and did quite well on the rest of the tests. iClicker quizzes are easy, and he tells you exactly what the essay portion on the tests will be
George was great, he had really engaging lectures. Really funny. I did not put much work into this class and it went pretty well. There are weekly quizzes but they are completely based off his lecture slides. He lays out exactly what you need to do to do well on assignments. I never read the textbook and did totally fine.
George is funny. His tests and quizzes are very much textbook based, and often times the questions are so random that I never heard of the words before. I thought it'd be a lot easier, but the class material itself puts me to sleep. Some BIO12 and PSYC12 review from hs. Dont buy an clicker, he offers paper each quiz if you "forgot".
Really funny guy. His lectures are great. Talks a little fast but totally manageable if you focus on what he's saying vs what's already written on the slides (slides are posted online anyways.) Exams and quizzes are fair just make sure you read the textbook and you'll be fine.
He was a good professor and taught the topics clearly. I recommend reading the textbook and maybe writing a few things down before class because he talks at a faster pace (which I liked) and you will be able to get more from the lecture if you do this. His quizzes are straightforward for the most part and he drops the two lowest marks.
Alder is a nice guy. He managed to make lectures engaging despite the course content not always being my thing. Clearly just a veteran professor who knows his stuff and likes what he does.
I like George except his grading is a little harsh. Only top 10% of the class gets an A, he restricts how many students can receive a certain letter grade pretty much. he does clicker quizzes every class and the course itself is extremely boring and a lotttt of work, but not hard. my TA was troy and was the best TA I've ever had.
Lectures are very confusing. I understood absolutely nothing from them. However, thankfully he assigned us a great textbook that explained everything really well. His papers are easy to do, his quizzes were tough.
Overall prepare to read chapters almost every week because there are quizzes to follow up on. Alder is quite funny but lectures quite fast so try your best to keep up but if not whatever you missed will be in the textbook anyways. Don't fall behind and end up studying two chapters a day before the test.
Terrible pdf slides, they were not engaging at all, tbh the worst I've seen. Make sure to buy the textbook and read that thoroughly. Tests are very real-life-based questions, and his "practice quizzes" are bad, do not rely on them to study. If you took psychology AP in high school, this class will be straightforward.
weekly quizzes on chapters. lectures were kind of hard to follow. read the textbook!
Graded by the curve, but didn't share my actual mark until a week before the final unit exam, so I didn't know how the curve affected my grades for too long. He gives lots of hints for tests and has involved experiences during class. Plus, he always wears cool shirts :)
I really enjoyed George as a professor. He is funny and uses lots of interactive demonstrations or real life scenarios when lecturing. He reminded me of a grandpa who tries to act tough but is really just a teddy bear. Exams and quizzes were straightforward, and assignments really easy. He does lecture fast though.
- A lot of students, and graded on a harsh curve (only 10% are allowed A) - Lectures are not mandatory and literally are just bad summaries of the textbook - The course is pretty much entirely weighted on quizzes/tests which are not too bad, just read the textbook - In general, it is like the textbook is the course.
Everything substantial about this course is thanks to the TAs. His lectures are NOT helpful for weekly quizzes and exams. I recommend leaving after the weekly quiz and basing your notes off textbook. The many assignment deadlines overlap each other, and the cumulative quiz was an exam, impossibly hard unless you already took Psyc Stats.
no final exam and he takes off your worst 1 test and 2 worst quizzes, lectures are long and he talks fairly fast so prepare notes ahead of time if you type slow but if you can type fast, don't worry about it. make sure to read the textbook and write notes from that because his lectures do not cover the entire chapter, chill guy though
Chill guy, decent lectures, very reliant on TAs so if you have a bad grade, it's because of your TA. No final exam + takes off your worst 2 quizzes, but he annoyingly curves your grade in the end (only 10% get A). You can survive just off the textbook
Engaging lectures, but prepare ahead - he talks fast. Textbook is key, plus unstuckstudy ai is great for study prep. Fair grading, no final, drops lowest quizzes. Overall a solid class.
