Goes by 'Kyle' Currently adjunct staff. This guy is obviously enthusiastic about his subject. Approaches math from a pure, rather than applied, standpoint. He is most interested in the students having an understanding of underlying principles, and did proofs of many formulas for that reason. Quite a few example problems, well writen tests.
In the begining there was Chuck Cummins, who had the Math god crown. He is still one of the greatest around, However after this class, i beleive the crown has been passed to Kyle. The explainations are great, class structure is great. Just dont forget your Neural Notes !

Without hesitation, I can say that he is the best mathematics teacher I have ever had. His teaching style just seems to cause understanding. He loves mathematics and knows his subject extremely well.
he loves math and knows how to explain it. He will answer any questions you have on the homework in class and actually gives the background and history of each concept to make it relevant and actually interesting. I failed calculus 3 times before i found him!
one of the best math teachers out there. he obviously loves mathematicas. he gives a short history lesson on each new principle, which makes it much more interesting, and introduces each new concept with a proof which really aids understanding.
Kyle was the best math teacher i have ever had. He was truly passionate about his subject. he was clear and helpful.. Prior to this math class i have never had a math professor that i respected and actually enjoyed learning from... Great teacher take his class!!!!
You don't have to show up for class. Just show up with your homework on testing days.
Kyle is an outstanding teacher and genuinely cares that you understand the material. For the final, he explained to us that he did not expect us to remember every little thing and encouraged us to just do our best. His tests are a breeze because he tells you exactly what is going to be on them.
good teacher
Kyle is nice, and he seems to have a real passion for mathematics. He doesn't bother to learn the students names, but he makes up for it by being easy to look at. LOL. He is a good instructor and a good person.
Wonderful teacher!!!! He's very helpful and very clear. He explains things very well! I would recommend him for any math class!
Kyle is A GREAT TEACHER! He Explains the material so that it is easy to understand completely obviously has a passion and like to tie in the history with the math. I had him for 1010 and 1050 then went to UTAH STATE! haven't had as good of a math teacher yet through calc. I really wish he would come up here and teach! Kyle is the GREATEST!
The best teacher! He does move fast and sometimes goes off on subjects that don't pertain to math. He rarely breaks concepts down to a lower level and has said that if you don't know how to do certain things you do not belong in that class. Aside from this he explains the math so that you understand the why and are not just memorizing what to do.
One of the best teachers I have ever had! Grades are merit based so you can't expect the possibility of extra credit or a grading curve. The class is extremely difficult, but he teaches it very well. If you attend class and do your homework you can succeed. He doesn't try to trick you with his tests. He's very straight forward, fair, and clear.
Will never forget.
I love going to Kyle's math class! This is my 4th attempt at math 1050. Not only will I pass, but I will get a good grade. It's obvious that Kyle is a math genius and he loves to teach it. He is so sharp and witty that he makes math entertaining. Take his class!
The best math teacher I have ever had. He is funny and explains the material really well! He makes every single class FUN! :)
in one word about his teaching and the class. difficult, he dose teach you how to do the problems, but can be is a incoherent way. loves math maybe to much can spend whole classes talking about Euler or others carefuller he likes to put definition word for word on test. can lose track of time easily. don't take if not had before
Kyle is an awesome professor. He is a bit more challenging than normal but nothing severe. He knows his stuff, loves the subject and has a good sense of humor. What's on the test was in the homework, likely resembling a problem in the homework. Highly recommended, take him if you can.
My first time through calculus I had a really hard time and didn't understand much; then I retook it from Kyle and it was a breeze because the way he explains stuff works well with my learning style. Excellent teacher!
It's a hard class, but if you put in a few hours every day you can scrape by with an A. Kyle is a very cool guy. He will explain stuff to you directly and is always willing to help. He is also a math genius, which you will find out. He likes to add history into his lectures which makes the class pretty interesting :). All in all, a great teacher!
HARD CLASS BUT EXCELLENT TEACHER. He goes over things well he will tell you how, why, and sometimes who. His tests are hard he does not just want you to regurgitate he wants you to know it inside and out. overall I recommend him if you are going into math or just actually want to know.
Hard teacher. For me, he spent too much time on the rules of the problems, and not enough time on how to actually use the rules. Overall, a good experience.
Very good teacher, very interesting. He teaches alot about the history of math which I enjoyed learning.
I am puzzled as to the comments about how this class was hard. Kyle makes math easy. He is the best math teacher on the planet. He explains the history of math as well. He is entertaining and straightforward. You will get the grade you deserve and learn the material.
Challenging, but SO worth it. His tests are hard, but he prepares the class for them very well. He's a fair grader, and really cares if the class understands WHY something is, instead of just pluggin-n-chuggin. And he's good looking, so that's a plus! I wish that I would have taken him for Calculus I.
He seems to go too much into theory than actually applying what he teaches. He doesn't necessarily help me out with any questions I might have. Only take his class if you are going into a Mathematics field. Otherwise, you'll be better with a different instructor.
Anyone who thinks this teacher is not a good teacher is crazy. He is the best math teacher on the planet and his lectures are so insightful. He is really funny. He makes his exams difficult but he is a totally fair grader. Doesn't even grade the homework. He really prepares his students for the finals. I will definitely be taking him for calc I&II
I've only had two quality math teachers in my life with Kyle being the second. Most math teachers are terrible and should be fired. He does spot check your homework so make sure you do it; he doesn't nitpick it though. Kyle should have his salary tripled. I decided to get a minor in Math because he made math interesting and fun for me.
ARE YOU WITH ME? ARE YOU WITH ME? That is all you will hear all semester long! He goes into the history of a theory and will be stuck there for half an hour!
Horrible. This teacher made me feel stupid every time I asked a question. I didn't learn anything from going to his lectures. He is very into himself. I still did fairly well in this class, and I know this class would have been an easy A if I would have had a teacher who actually taught. Don't take him!!!
Awesome teacher. The lectures were never boring. He answers all questions and isn't mean as others have suggested, but expects you to be prepared for the class. I asked questions all the time. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to truly master the course.
He is a very cool guy, open to many questions, makes a lot of proofs, very fair and interesting.I recommend any class from him he really enjoys teaching people.
Kyle's goal is to teach you how to think about math instead of having you just regurgitate equations. If your goal is to just learn to regurgitate, then take another teacher. If your goal is to learn to see mathematics in a whole new light and forever change your thought processes then definitely take him--absolutely the best math teacher I've had
DO NOT TAKE FOR SUMMER SEMESTER! This is a great teacher that really takes the time to explain how equations and theorems work. He takes a lot of time to explain this and as such it felt like he was rushing through things at the end of the summer semester. Take him in Fall/Spring not summer semester.
Excellent teacher. Goes out of his way to explain WHY things work rather than just regurgitation of formulas and proofs. Summer semester felt rushed, and he got side tracked several times on math history, which was very interesting, but hard to squeeze into a summer term. Best math teacher I've ever had.
This professor is terrible!! I'm not sure where all of these good comments are coming from!?! I love math and know for a fact that those trying to learn from this guy will begin to hate the subject. He has great knowlegde of the subject but talks down to all of the students in the most condensending way possible. Just a warning future students
A friendly guy, but he screwed up for the Fall 2010 semester. I know he -could- be a very helpful instructor, but he wasted too much of my life. Over a two week period, our class got more than 5 hours of lectures on History, Gossip, Politics, and Elizabethan and Roman social orders. Spent LESS THAN 30 minutes covering Calculus. TAKE AT OWN RISK!
Concerning the previous comment--my favorite part of this class was Kyle's stories about the history of where Math formulas came from. The book can give me formulas and instructions. I like an instructor who gives me more than a regurgitation of the book and Kyle did that. Very entertaining and insightful.
Any person who rates Costello poorly is a person who expects to obtain a grade he did not earn. Costello is the professor I'd been waiting for since I fell in love with math and logic. Costello will teach you math in such a way that you will excel in every math class you take thereafter. I only wish I'd known of him sooner.
he is a awesome man with endless knowledge.he changed my way of thinking about MATH. so no doubt on his excellence.
This class wasn't the worst but it wasn't the best either. He doesn't really teach he just kind of babbles on about random things. He is funny sometimes (kinda like Michael Scott off of the Office) but he uses big words and loses students in his stories. I had to teach myself out of the book. Also talks down to students.
Kyle is by far the best teacher i have ever encounter. while i did not pass his course i will be taking my math classes from him from now on. His way of thinking has enlighten me to be a more critical thinker. He made me love math which only liked. If you are in pursuit of knowledge then kyle is the teacher you want.
Not the easiest prof but that was one of his greatest qualities. I learned more about calc 1 and 2 in his calc 3 class than I did in calc 1 and 2. He is entertaining and knows his stuff. He really cares about math and any student who really wants to learn. If you are more concerned with a grade over learning take another
If he uses words that are too hard to understand, perhaps you shouldn't be in college. College is for scholars looking to improve themselves. He was condescending to a few students but only those that asked unbelievably stupid questions and wasted time in class. Kyle is the best math teacher there is and we are lucky to have him in Utah.
He is interested in the stuff he teaches and he knows the history behind it. Costello is a nice funny guy. If you fail its because you deserve to (I know cuz I failed, but he was always nice and showed only disappointment) I want to take all my Math from him.
Costello is an okay teacher. He rambles a lot about the history of Math and things like that and it can get kind of old when you want to know how to actually do the equation. He has three main tests along with the final, but will throw out your lowest score test. Requires homework due at the time of test. He wasn't my kind of math teacher =/
He's passionate about the subject. He was kind of difficult to learn from, but he encourages critical thinking. I ended up failing this class, which is purely my fault, I've learned my lesson. You will have to work for your grade! If you are not willing to work then this is not the class for you.
He is very passionate about Math. You will learn some history about the math that I thought was very interesting. Keep up or ahead on the homework or you will be left in the dust. I am taking 1050 with him.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Provides a new insight into math I didn't know existed. I wish I could have had this teacher for every math class from junior high through high school. I am excited to take Calculus from him. I never thought I would be excited about a math class. Also, very clear, consistent and fair in the grading policies.
Mr.Kyle is very passionate about Mathematics and actually does instill somewhat of an interest in it through his teaching. I found the history bits interesting.I did not pass his 1010 but I would take him again because he is brilliant at the very least. You have to up your game if you want to pass his class. If you do not, it is your own fault.
take Costello if:you enjoy learning EVERY concept by a formal derivation or proof(with almost no applied examples to help you do homework);having the professor take 45min of class to prove why a virtually meaningless side note in the margin of the book is only partially true; long tests with 1 hr time limits.had to teach myself out of the book.
Great teacher. Great lectures. He seems genuinely interested in how well you are doing and is disappointed in those who perform poorly. Keep in mind he teaches 5 classes a semester. There isn't a lot of one on one time. Use the math lab and sign up for the workshop class and you will do just fine.
The Person who said Kyle went over a meaningless digression over a side note for 45 minutes is lying. I remember that margin note and it wasn't meaningless. It was inaccurate and needed to be corrected. And it didn't take 45 minutes.
If you are studying math and need to know every detail of every underlying principle, take this class. If you just need to know how to do to it, take someone else. His homework is extremely long and difficult. I took calc 2 and passed with a c... then retook it and was lost in the first week of his class.
costello is an amazing teacher with zeal towards math. it isnt enough to explain something works, he will prove it and show the whats, whys, and hows behind the formulas we use. he expects alot out of his students and pushes them to do better. in my opinion he is one of the best teachers at S.L.C.C.
my overall perception is:Are you a Math major? Or are you an Engineering major? If you are a Math major you will like Costello's style which is heavier on the theory/proof side of the concepts. If you are engineering major you may enjoy the practical application more(i.e. how to use the formula for your homework) and should probably look elsewhere.
Ok, I'd like to say I really like Kyle, he is very nice, passionate about teaching math and he is very helpful. However, I hate Math. Having said that, I must admit his class was hard for me not only because I dislike Math, but also because I had a very hard time understanding him. He really likes to explain the what, the how, and the why.
Kyle's teaching philosophy is through definitions and proofs, leaving it to the students to think and apply it to their assignments. To paraphrase, "You're already told what to do, where to go, how to be, in every other aspect of your life, like a robot. THINK!" That said, his course is a challenge, but that's standard for anything of value.
His style of lecture is very thourough. He gives reason for everything and reveals techniques for understanding math as a language not a science. If you sit in a math class and wonder why your doing what your doing, Costello can help.
Great teacher. Makes hard concepts seem easy. However, he regularly gets sidetracked and can't finish all the chapters on time. Needs to stay on track to get through the whole book. I feel like he chops some of the material every semester. Otherwise, exceptional teacher and the best math teacher I've ever had.
Kyle is great. Math, very frequently, is just regurgitated without explanation. But Kyle really makes one think about mathematical correctness. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification if needed! He will challenge you to think in class but it was honestly the best teaching method I have had to help me learn math.
Great teacher! He is very helpful and I highly recommend taking advantage of that! You do have to put in work to get a good grade but Kyle is always wanting to help! I really enjoyed this class, but I do warn you that you've got to do your work.
Like others have said, Kyle really makes you think as opposed to just giving you the answer which doesn't benefit anyone. He gives you all the tools necessary in order to carry out the thought process. He is very thorough in his lectures and really explains the math behind the math. He also has really cool stories to tell about math.
One of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. Kyle is clear and thorough with his lectures and he is funny as well! Assigns homework mainly to help boost your grade, and gives example problems to know what to expect from his exams. I highly recommend this professor.
Kyle is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. However if you want to skate through math with a bad grade without learning it. Do not take it from Kyle. He shows you proof for everything and the math behind the calculations. As for helpfulness, he gives you the best kind, making you realise what you need to do alone. Take math from Kyle.
Aart is a good guy. He seems to really care about us learning, rather than us breezing through the class. He really makes you apply yourself and you have to study like crazy to understand everything. His lectures consist of proofs. All proofs. He does answer questions before class and does specific examples. Good class but requires a lot of work!
I really think if you gys want to learn and understand math, you should choose the other teacher because he doesn't shows much work, and you only have 3 test(not including the final), so if you blow up 1 test then the last of test you have to unless get an 90% to pass this class.
Calc III is already pretty tough, but Costello makes it much harder than necessary. On tests, every problem is the hardest possible example of the type of problems from the book. He throws Calc I&II concepts on the tests like derivative of inverse tangent and integration by parts. He also puts concepts on the test that are not in the book.
Exceptional teacher overall. Has great lectures and the homework assignments really help one practice. My only concern is the time for tests. If you have a 50 minute class you don't get any more time than that for each test. Many students know their material but have test anxiety and another 20 or 30 minutes to take the test would go a long way.
Costello is probably the greatest instructor at SLCC. I'm actually ruined for all future math learning due to how great he is. To all the math teachers out there: PROOFS ARE GOOD! My retention of Kyle's material is much higher than any other mathematics I've ever learned (and I fear WILL ever learn). He proves EVERYTHING so you can derive it later.
If you truly have an interest in math, then you'll like his class, period.
Would be a better professor for a higher level math class than 1010. He is a poor teacher because he doesn't explain anything step by step. Does not explain the "how" of doing the equations and spends too much on the "why". Going to class was useless and I learned nothing. I survived only because of MyMath Lab.
AMAZING Calc 2 teacher! Very passionate about Math and makes you see the bigger picture with his side bars. Likes to write a lot but then you see where the formulas come from. Always willing to answer questions at the beginning of class. Collects HW at test time. Gives you a heads up on what is going to be on the exam.
According to my experience, Kyle's Cal2 is the best one in this college.I tried to take another guy's cal2, I dropped two times. Cal2 covers a lot. The instructor should know what students know, but not all of them know. Kyle focused on the points students need to know. That's why I like his class.
Costello is the best math teacher I have ever had, He has a passion for the subject! If you enjoy math, and have a desire to learn it he is a great teacher for you. If you are merely taking math cause it is requited and you want an easy class that is dumbed down, I would suggest looking for another teacher.
I took several of his classes, and since I have transferred, I haven't had anyone better. Yes, he proves stuff, but that should be expected because this is math, and this is how you learn. He probably knows his math history better than anyone I've ever met, and he doesn't hesitate to share it, but it is what keeps math relevant to the real world.
Costello is a really good teacher I liked his way of teaching, he gives a new perspective and great insight about math history. This class takes a lot of commitment and hard work. Good luck
Kyle is a rare breed of professors. He really truly cares about what he teaches and is very passionate about math. I love his lectures because he doesn't just explain how to get the answer, he explains why you get that answer and how to prove that it is the right answer. He hates calculators and mymathlab. Do the homework or you will fail.
My math class is my favorite class this semester. I really like his teaching techniques. I not only understand what I am doing but I also have a good understanding of why I am doing. Smart, smart man! If you can get into his class you would be lucky to have him! I plan to take all of my math classes with him.
He teaches you more about math history then the math you need to pass. Take 1010 with him and you'll regret it, I did. Luckily I could understand the book cause it was more help then him. Avoid taking him for MATH 1010!
great professor, he really cares about what he teache, i like his teaching style. really smart man
skips steps and if you asks questions he will make fun of you or say if you dony know whats going on you shouldnt be in this class.
I just want to clarify about the person that says that he skips steps and makes fun of you. He skips steps because they are steps you should have learned in previous math, and if you are confused he will go over it again quickly, IE difference of cubes, factoring, etc. If you don't know these things then you shouldn't be in the class.
Mr. Costello is a phenomenal math professor! You HAVE to go to class (like all math courses). We had three tests all semester and he dropped our lowest score, and of course the final. I did all the HW and studied a lot and got an easy A-. I would take him for all my math courses if I could. He does LOVE to talk, so get ready for lots of stories!
Math lovers, math haters, and math inbetweeners: if you're required to take a math course, Kyle Costello is the person to take it from. Madly passionate about his trade, he not only teaches what you need to know, but he makes it practical. He does have a tendency to ramble, but that's part of his charm. Work hard, and learn to love math again!
Kyle is an amazing teacher. His lectures are extremely clear. When learning a new theorem or method, he will do several problems until everyone in the class feels they got it. He is constantly asking the class if they're on board, if he should keep doing practice problems, or if there are questions. He is super willing to help don't be afraid.
Likes to go off on tangents (hehe math pun). he teaches mostly through proofs not examples. great if you are going on to higher math. assigns homework in blocks due on test days. Nice guy cares a ton about the field and science in general.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He doesnt just explain math formulas work out the way that they do but he also explains why. He is very passionate about the field and a brilliant instructor.
Great professor. Easily the best math teacher I've had in years. He has a passion for the subject, and it shows in his teaching. Explains everything very clearly, and goes in depth about how and why it works. Lots of homework, but it's all pencil and paper, straight out of the book. As long as you do the homework, the tests are easy.
Best Math teacher ever. He is insanely in love with math. He presents a theorem, he proves it after giving it's story, fun. 3 Exams, drops the lowest. Homework due on exam days. He give a review the class before an exam which sums up the whole thing. very interesting class, fun and easy. unfortunately, he was not teaching Math1220 next semester.
I took Calculus having barely passed trigonometry with a more confusing professor. I was worried that I wouldn't pass Calc, but Costello knows his stuff, and he knows that he knows his stuff. Has a sense of humor that may come off at times as egotistical but he means well. I passed his class comfortably, and would take another from him if I could.
Gives 4 tests, drops the lowest score of one. Homework is graded on completion. Lectures are 80% proofs, 20% examples. Tests are 'moderately difficult'. Class average was 80% . Those that showed up every day and did the homework, put in 2-3 hours a day for study got A's. Others didn't and got B's. Very nice, very funny, but blunt. Good professor
He is a great guy, don't get me wrong but he tends to get off subject VERY easily. He tries to relate math to life, and in my opinion takes away from the reason I am there.. He is a decent explainer but I definitely had to work hard for an A. A lot of class is spent talking about random facts instead of doing actual math. Great guy though. Witty.
Professor Costello is one of the best math instructors I've ever had. He's so passionate about the subjects (especially if you're taking higher courses). His lectures are fun and challenging. If you really wanna learn math, you should take his class at least once!!!
Kyle is okay if don't want to learn very much on how to solve the problems an d the the steps to solving them. becuse he teaches you most the history of math and test you on 4 chapter at a time. It's basically teach you self with no test reviews. He is late every day carrying all his books with paper shoved in them and marks that don't work.
Kyle is an alright but to you to much of the why not the how and to much about math history. His has 3 test and mess up on one you will not pass. I not payed for a history class I am paying for a math class to teach my the how not they why and truing the class into fuisics class ether. He showed up late most days too.
Kyle teaches to much of the why we do math this way instead of actually showing you. Also when I does do show work he does not finsh the problem and you ask him questions a he tell you you should now this by now that why your in 1210 math. also he shows up late a lot to and never reviews for test ether.
Kyle teach his math like it a physics class more on the why we don the equitation"s this way instead of the how. you ask qwestion and he yells at you and tells you haven't you been fowling along. I did get to calculus by not knowing my math well. Also never reviews for the test ether and you mess up one of three test you not going to pass.
Kyle doesn't enplane thins will go to long on math definitions something we should do on our owe or know by know in math 1010. Also goes on to long on the why not the how you do it plus is late a lot too. He would be good for a teach psychics class but not math becuse Kyle knows his math but can't teach it very well.
The best math teacher I've ever had. This was the first time in my life I enjoyed taking a math class. I won't take another math class from any other teacher. I will wait until he teaches the class if I need to take it. There are simply too many bad math teachers in the world.
I had Calc I, II, and III from Professor Costello. He is by far the best math professor I have ever had and probably will have. If you don't intent on actually learning the math then don't take math classes from him though. This is a class that you will actually learn and be prepared to use the math after and continue on to higher maths.
He is an amazing professor, really knows his stuff. Expect to learn how things came about in Mathematics. He explains reasons Mathematicians came up with the very conclusions you will use. Tells you what to expect on tests. Expect to do a lot of studying if its a Calc class. If you can take a class with him do it.
Kyle is an amazing professor. He knows math and he can teach it to you. Don't expect to sluff off, your grade will suffer his subjects are not trivial. You will also learn more about mathematics than just equations and manipulations but in all things and the background and how it came to fruition. TAKE HIM AND BE FOREVER CHANGED.
He is a true inspirational mathematician. He inspired me to take math more seriously and although he is very detailed about math his exams aren't that hard and the class overall is not a hard one to pass . He focuses on concepts which I believe is one of the key to being successful in any subject. He is also funny, which makes the class fun.
Good math teacher compared to what I have had in the past. Inspires you to work hard and seems to enjoy is work. Not an easy teacher, but that shouldn't be a down point to him because it is fair. I have had teachers where it is not fair and it cost me from doing getting a good grade. Take him if you willing work and learn.
Kyle spends more time talking about Math History and the importance of Math. Nobody in my class asked questions because he never answered them if we did. It was two hours of Kyle lecturing things that no one understood what he was talking about. I would never recommend him to anyone.
If you struggle with Math, don't take him. While he has some of the greatest passion for math I've seen, his teaching methods are shotty at best and leave me trying to learn concepts on my own time with the text which is just as difficult. He spends far more time than necessary lecturing the history than teaching what's in the homework.
Prof Costello puts a large emphasis on getting his students to understand why Calculus works the way it does. During class lectures Prof. Costello goes over proofs in intricate detail. Anyone who wishes to get a good grade in his classes should be prepared to solve problems creatively.
Kyle is the worst professor I've ever had and that's saying something since I already have a bachelors degree. His lectures are incoherent, he spends too much time talking about the history of math rather than, you know, teaching math, and he's condescending and rude to his students. Thank goodness for Youtube or I'd have done poorly in this class.
Costello is the best math instructor I've ever had. He teaches you "why" and not just "how". He took the redundancy of memorizing steps away from learning math and showed the logic of why we do these steps. I will say this though, he will get lost on tangents when asked questions and valuable time is wasted from the short 50 minute lectures.
Castello teaches by definitions & Proofs ONLY. Of a 2 hour class he only actually taught for 15-30 min. The rest of class he ranted about school policies & dead mathematicians. Doesn't actually grade the HW problems just section completeness. Test Problems way harder than class material. He's nice but self-entitled & tends to belittle students.
Really an excellent professor. There was a lot of unnecessary class time, as he like to do proofs of every. single. concept. and he also goes on tangents about his favorite mathematicians (which I found really interesting). I would recommend reading/doing the homework before he lectures on it.
He was really good at taking concepts you learned in class and connecting them to real world applications which I found extremely helpful. He often times would go on long tangents that were often interesting, but felt like a waste of class time. There is a lot of homework, but isn't harshly graded so it's actually really helpful for the test.
Kyle has real passion for math/teaching and If you enjoy STEM and want to really learn math take a class from him. His lectures are really entertaining, yes even the historical tangents, and he really teaches you "why" math works. In the end I switched from an engineering to a math major and large part of that was due to Kyle!
Professors Costello is the best math professor that I have ever had. He explains the math in a different way. he wants the student to understand math. He is the most amazing professor. The exam is super easy if you study. there are a lot of homework, but it's really helpful for the exam.
He frequently talks about things that have nothing to do with the material. About half of the classes I attended were wasted this way. When he sticks to the math he is knowledgeable and helpful, but this happens inconsistently.
Costello only uses definition and Proofs in teaching the course. NO examples that relate to the homework. He expects you to know everything you learn in your previous class. He not very helpful, and he does not grade your homework at all, just completeness. Costello is a wonderful teacher, but his method of teaching was not so great (for me).
This has been my absolute worst experience in school, Kyle only goes over proofs and theories and very rarely ever shows examples of what is going to be on the homework. speaking of homework you get tons of it, I'm talking about chapters from the book, then finishing most of each chapter's HW problems. btw his impossible test averages were a 53%.
Easily the best math teacher I've ever had. He explains everything thoroughly going through extensive proofs for every concept and does examples afterward. I wish I took my earlier math classes with him.
Costello really knows his stuff! He is a very animated teacher and is truly passionate about imparting knowledge. You'll truly understand the math by learning not only the theory but the ideas that lead to the theory's discovery! He expects active participation, and he's does explanatory asides on the whiteboards to ensure you firmly understand.
Prof. Costello was the most inspirational teacher in my college career. His lectures inspired me to enjoy math. I loved the history parts too, intelligent people are curious, how did someone arrive at proofs, laws, etc? The students in my class that didn't like him wanted to be spoon fed math and didn't want to think for themselves.
He's the human manifestation of the Shia LaBeouf "Just Do It" video. He holds his lectures and presentation of the math to such a high standard that I found myself doing the same in my own work. It's not easy, but it's made me a better student. Have gumption, you can do it!
Ok so theres a lot of mixed reviews on here, and I looked at Costellos reviews before taking his class. I was super worried because I hate proofs. He likes to push the envelope in class but his tests are straight from Stewarts text. Hes a solid teacher and yea I would definitely take again.
Unless you are able to learn by theory or are ready to teach yourself, do NOT take this class. I had to drop because he was too difficult to understand, and did not show any examples that you would see on the homework. He has been the only teacher to make me, someone who is going to school to be a math teacher myself, hate math.
Prof Costello is absolutely brilliant. That being said, he absolutely cannot teach. He only goes over theory and proofs and doesn't actually show you any examples that are similar to the homework or tests. He rambles for the majority of class about the history of math and gets through sections very slowly. If you enjoy math you will NOT enjoy him.
Grades really hard and he just spends all class talking about useless stuff and history of math.
This class isnt mandatory because you have to learn everything on your own. you show up and he shet talks about history of math and engineering disasters.
Kyle is a tough instructor, no doubt. I had to drop his class for personal and acedemic reasons, and he was incredibly understanding and kind any time I'd speak to him outside of class, for whatever reason. He's been through a lot and will not tolerate manipulative behavior at all. So do the work, read the text, ask questions and you'll do well.
He would typically explain everything as abstractly as possible. While the theory was cool and mathematically rigorous, he wouldn't do any concrete examples of what we'd see on the homework or tests. Overall he's a great mathematician but a really bad (at least in my opinion) math professor.
I struggled with Professor Costello's style. I felt he cared most about proving he is intelligent rather than furthering the students understanding. Although, I will say this.. Students whose intellect paralleled his really seemed to enjoy his teaching style. If you can't solely learn from the books proofs, it will be hard to learn from his class.
Refuses to cover material, answer questions, or offer refreshers. Lectures are wasted on rants about anything but those things that most contribute to a student's success. He is perfect for those who can learn everything they need to know from the book without attending a single class. His only saving grace is that attendance is not mandatory.
No, Kyle wont SHOW you how to solve a problem. He'll teach you how to think, get you excited, and divert you from the plug-and-chug mentality. If he ever shows you anything, it will be how a real mathematician thinks and works. Truly, I've never left a math class like I have his excited to dive into my textbook. SLCC's lucky to have a mind like his
Very condescending. If you ever ask a question he will make you feel stupid. I witnessed this time and time again through the semester. He only ever writes equations and proofs. Never ever does examples. He goes way to deep into math concepts that aren't necessary. The homework load is insane.
He's good at teaching the principles, but he will never show you how to solve the problems. Tests were very easy though compared to the HW. Just make sure you understand how to do the basic questions on the HW and you will pass.
I should let people know he is an excellent instructor if you are into math. He is passionate and always focusing on building connections instead of throwing a bunch of toneless conclusions. He is one of those respected who bring you the difference between just reading a textbook and discovering vivid knowledge.
Horrible horrible horrible teacher. Avoid at all costs.
Kyle Costello really loves what he does. So much so that it gets in the way of him doing his job. He goes off on hour long tangents about math history at least once a week and really struggles to stay on task with teaching what you really need to know. Not particularly approachable, and is not available outside of class. Be ready to teach yourself
Very knowledgeable and bright guy but terrible teacher. Lectures always went wayyy in depth about concepts beyond the scope of the class and sometimes it would come up in the tests. Didn't do a single example problem the whole semester. Never taught out of the book. Self taught myself linear algebra. Studied hard for tests and always did poorly.
Inspirational, however he seems to try to show his knowledge rather than focusing on material. Consistent tangents! Doesn't work through problems on the board. Perfect for a student that would rather learn from the book.
Well you have a total of 9 assignments for this class. Homework is lumped into sections. So, miss one little thing, expect not to pass. His lectures are lengthy and the book is not a reference (its a necessity), so if you like to learn from the book then this is the class for you! Also, he uses a weird shorthand that I just could never understand.
Don' take his class unless no other classes can fit into your schedule.
His lectures are awful! He rambles on and on about things that don't apply to what you need to learn. I hired a tutor and spent a large amount of time in the STEM Center for tutoring. He is condescending and if you ask a question he will say, "Didn't you read the book?". I wouldn't recommend him at all!! FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
It's been more than a decade since I took one of his classes. I was just speaking with my wife about teachers who have impacted my life in a positive way and his name came up. I now have a degree in Physics and a lot of my love for mathematical ideas, which pushed me through the difficult moments during my undergraduate education, began with him.
He is an amazing professor who makes you figure out the problem on your own with very little guidance. The day before the class he does give an exact outline of the questions on the test, and they are almost identical to the actual questions to the test. So, if you know how to do those questions you will pass the test. He wants you to succeed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He wouldn't teach his class, although attendance is not required, you don't learn in class, he would talk about random stuff for the 2 hours of class. The only things you are graded on for the entire grade are 4 exams, 4 homework assignments, and the final exam. DO NOT take this class, you will be teaching yourself Math1010.
I am horrible at math but it is required for my degree and this is the only class that would fit my schedule. He is a nice guy but rambles on for like 45 min about random things and its so confusing. If you don't understand something good luck. I don't know why students ask questions because it literally makes it even harder to understand.
Kyle's teaching style can be difficult to understand for some of us "slower" folks. In my opinion, he goes way too fast and it's difficult to keep up. When asked questions, he doesn't ever really go into depth and puts it on the individual for not understanding. He has the potential to improve by spending the time explaining how he came to the solu
Kyle Costello is one of the teachers of all time. Only take this professor if you're already good at math and homework. The problem with Kyle is that he's not the best at TEACHING math. In math education, an OK teacher is a bad math teacher. A good professor is an OK math professor. Be prepared for 30-minute tangents. You'll either hate or love him
Professor Costello is a great Math teacher. He has clear grading criteria. He is very straightforward, do the work and put in the time, and you will do well in his class. He adds history to his lectures. He skips over basic math steps when working through problems. No extra credit is given or late homework. I would recommend going to every class.
Professor Costello is a great professor, you can tell he loves math and the history behind it.He is not a hard grader and he gives an outline for the exams the day before.Lots of homework but really you do not have to do every single exercise.Take it, work on the outline that he gives before the exam, submit the homework on time, you will do great

The first day was an entire speech about math, you can tell it's something he is very passionate about. For our class, he is very basic. Whiteboard and paper tests. You can type your homework, but he encourages paper work. Lastly, there is quite some homework, just keep a schedule and you'll finish it all right.
Kyle did not do anything for this class. It was just read a textbook and watch some videos. The videos may or may not match the textbook. Homework questions were easy and then the tests will blind side you with hard questions. The course was very difficult to navigate.
This was the best math teacher I've ever had. Kyle actually got me excited for math, which was something I've never had before. He talked often about the history of the math and why its important to know. The question "Why am I learning this" was thrown out and replaced with, "thats super cool". I didn't pass because I didn't put in the work...
He was not caring at all and left you out to dry. He teaches how a car works without teaching you how to drive. You will end up teaching yourself more than he ever teaches you. Awful Professor!!!! SAVE YOURSELVES
Professor Costello is hit-or-miss - engaging when he's on, but can ramble at times. Lots of homework, but using unstuck ai and reviewing the exam outlines can help you succeed. Give it a shot if you're comfortable managing the workload.
Be ready to learn from textbook only and teach yourself. He is an easy teacher that doesn't take participation at all but make sure to spend a lot of time on homework. Also, make sure to revise old homework again and again because the final exam certainly will knock you down if you just memorize recent lessons.
This professor is uncaring and leaves students to figure everything out. He explains theory but offers no practical help. You'll teach yourself more than you'll learn from him. Avoid at all costs—save yourself the frustration!
average math class in remembering and learning from the book
Kyle really cares about teaching math. If you want a teacher who just goes through the motions and teaches you to copy them do not take this professor. He makes sure that mathematical principles arent just learned but understood to the fullest and sets up a very solid understanding of the concepts. Hands down my favorite math teacher ever
