Hes amazing, Taking Econ303 with him and its pretty straightforward. Midterm was relatively easy and graded well. Over all class average is high. Just make sure to go to all his tutorials and submit all assignments on time.
He's a good prof. Came to our class with high expectations that we were really good in math and so the first month or two was difficult as we weren't up to what he expected. He changed how fast he was going though and made everything easier. It was really nice of him to adjust so heavily so we could learn. Good prof and good guy. Would recommend.
Very knowledgable in his field. It was his first time teaching ECON 339 and he did an amazing job. Giving marks for attendance made more easy grades, and he had very fair expectations for the class. I had a very poor partner for a project and he was very understanding and did not let it affect my grade. Very kind and professional.
Dr Hashmi is a Prof who is here to prove to the you how smart he is & how dumb everyone else is. The midterm won't be on concepts you've covered in class, nothing is ever rationalized for the real world its all in fairy tale Aamir land. Cant even choose the correct answers on his own problem sets, as seen in the last day of class. Useless learnt 0
Great Prof! Available whenever needed and was very supportive in office hours. Well prepared with organized and easy to follow lectures/PowerPoints. Followed textbook, but I recommend attending lectures. Tests are challenging, but fair. Don't try to wing exam! KNOW YOUR CONCEPTS and be able to recall them quickly and you will do well.
He was okay. He said he was going to make this course harder in the future and that class got lucky this time around (Class avg on midterm A, Final he didn't release any info). Weekly assignments felt long and boring. Class participation marks felt hard to earn (hard to participate in a topic you're still learning). Lots of work and reading.
I like Aamir since he is very open to your feedback, more so than any other prof I ever had. He is very reasonable and comes across very clear in lectures. However, assignments and midterm felt very disjointed from what was being taught, and far too challenging (midterm class avg 42%). Encourages students to expand on ideas, sometimes too much tho
He is actually a fairly decent prof that is open to adjusting his teaching style to accomodate his students. He truly cares and wants people to succeed, but ofcourse the students have to show some work and actually try. He's one of the better profs in the Econ department.
Must attend class because there is no textbook. Lectures do not equate to homework assignments or exams. What reading material there is, he left for before the final, plus there was an project and oral presentation due. The workload needed to be more evenly distributed. Assignments after every topic, midterm, project, final. Don't recommend.
New prof to U of C so different than most classes. Homework was marked for completion even if its wrong and the tests were directly from the homework. He specializes in Macro economics and this is a micro course which meant he directly taught from the textbook word for word. I'd avoid it if possible
Very good Prof. His lectures are great and very educational. He is very approachable and seems to really care about your performance as a student. All his slides are online but I recommend going to his lectures. Do his assignments and ask lots of questions as that seemed the best way to learn the content in his class.
Going to Hashmis class is a waste of time. It is easy to get an A without attending. He takes weeks to cover incredibly simple concepts. Answers emails in a condescending tone when he lacks the organization to put the information on the course outline to begin with, disrespectful. If you actually care about econ, do not take any classes with him.
Extremely dry lectures. Took two months of attending lectures before we started to learn things I didn't already know in going into this class. Really takes his time going over basic concepts and can take up to several weeks on each set of lecture slides. That being said, 395 is a difficult math course and I would avoid taking it with Hashmi.
Hashmi projects this consistent positive energy and enthusiasm in all his lectures. Course expectations and concepts are made clearly and concisely. His positive enthusiasm goes a long way, in courses that are partially or completely filled with dry theoretical-economic concepts. You're unlikely to get a better prof for these types of courses.
Prof. Hashmi is obviously interested in the course material, and teaches it with precision and humour. He invites class participation and goes out of his way to make sure all students understand the material, and makes sure to go over application in-class. The class is a bit easy, but only because he is so thorough in the lectures.
Solid choice. I hate statistics, even as an ECON major. He made this course super easy, even though it is rumored to be one of the hardest for ECON. Assignments he went through in class, all we had to do was copy and hand them in for 15%. Labs suck but attend and get 5%. Midterm was surprisingly easy but class average was around 60%. Curved final.
Hashmi believes in learning by the concept. If youre not that kind of learner, you shouldnt take this class. He teaches as if hes an English major that uses difficult vocabs in lectures and expects us to know what it means, most of us are first years. Read the textbook instead rather than going to his lecture.
Hashmi teaches his courses several levels above what the course actually is and entirely ignores prerequisites. He is teaching Econ 359 as if it were Econ 387 (Honors Math Econ). He doesnt provide achievable stretches with this teaching method. You cant use the book for what he teaches.
The problem sets and previous midterms did not match the midterm. Hashmi isnt teaching 359, he is teaching a math course and not in a good way. If there were another instructor taking the course, I would take the other instructor.
The midterm is written in 70 minutes and is a combination of everything mixed together... something he never taught you in class, nor was it asked in his practice questions. He seems to think he is teaching an advanced math course. Would suggest taking this class from any other prof. His final has to be passed in order to pass the class.
Horrible. He is literally teaching this class all math based with absolutely no intuition in exams and lectures. He is all over the place and did not even talk about the exam in class, rather a simple email. Exam was nothing like previous ones. He is not fair as one lecture had a 50 minute exam while the other had a longer more difficult one.
He is such a gerat prof who will do his absolute best to support you in your learning, he relly cares about his stdudents and very approachable. He posts all his notes online, it is easy to understand his notes. My favorite prof I've encountered at university so far. Very good prof!
His assignments are at least 50 plus questions, sometimes it could even go up to 90. The midterm questions were advance for this course. Too much unnecessary info during lectures when justifying a simple concept. I adore economics, but I learned very little from Hashmi and depend on the textbook and his slides. Its the only way to pass.
Great dude but his course is ridiculous, he smushed the entire course into 6 "topics", making the info for each topic way too much, and the assignments way too long. It's stressful, overwhelming and difficult to manage.
The final is 50% of the grade. Both the final and midterm are nothing like the practice ones posted. The book does not cover the math he teaches in class and what is tested. Big disconnect. The math he goes over in class doesnt go into enough detail for the majority of students. Proof exam averages. What isnt explained well, will be on exams.
Hashmi is what I call a sneak attack professor. What you don't expect on exams will be on exams, so you must be well prepared in ALL areas. His problem sets are the basis for every exam, so focus on those. Overall, I'd prefer the teaching style of another professor, the PS make you lazy and I didn't see the value in what we were learning. Curved.
What this professor is very good about is meeting grading submission deadlines, which is appreciated. It is a methodical approach that doesnt leave students guessing and wondering.
Aamir is a great prof when it comes to relating what you're studying to the real world. His tests (midterm and final ) will almost always contain something that you won't expect to be on there so make sure you study for broadly, actually do the problem sets and don't just copy the answers because every test question will be based around them.
He is a great teacher, very organized, and explains ideas very well. Other than the midterm and final there are weekly(ish) assignments that he gives you answers to. If you are not working through these problems and learning the information as you go along you will not do well. This class is hard but the best teacher to do it with is my boy Hashmi!
Great prof when it comes to making the lectures enjoyable. But just wrote his midterm, which he said to study for by doing the past midterms he posted online, and it was nothing like them. Hoping for a curve otherwise this class with him is a joke.
Hashmi's a nice guy, but his teaching style isn't for everyone. He focuses for the most part SOLELY on the mathematical aspects of concepts and doesn't explain the economic theory behind them. I'll be taking ECON359 soon and I'm afraid I won't have the knowledge sufficient to do well in the next class.
This was my second theory course with Dr. Hashmi, and he still hasn't figured out how to test students properly. You could spend all of your time studying his material and still miss the curveballs he throws during exams. There needs to be more options for profs in terms of macro theory, because Hashmi only caters to a particular type of student.
Very passionate about economics and as long as your paying attention in class you will do well in this course. the mandatory tutorials were not so great, but they were easy free marks
He didn't say any other useless things in class! That's wonderful! I am an international student but I can deep understand his class. If u come to class and do asmt, you can get easy A. I miss last three topics of Econ 303 but I can still easily get B. All of asmts, he will teach you in class and give you answer. He is a really great PROF!!!!!
Get ready to work with Hashmi. If you do his weekly assignments, go to class, most tutorials, you'll get an A. Sometimes he feels superior to everyone but he is still a good teacher. Nevertheless, he will make a hard final, but he ends up curving it up. I felt I failed it but I end up getting an A.
Hashmi is an amazing prof. He really cares about his students and understands what it takes to understand the material. He really gives you all the best chances to succeed if you show up and pay attention. Would definitely take a class with him again :).
Aamir knows his stuff. Few concepts he did not explain too clearly but overall really good quality. Highly recommend you read the book or lectures ahead of time. His exams are a piece of cake if you do all the assignments and extra practice questions. Being interested in the subject also helps. Attend lectures. If you want to learn Aamir is the man
Going into his class, I thought this course with Hashmi was going to be way worse than it really is. His powerpoints are very detailed, gives lots of practice questions, and overall the course was taught in a very organized manner. He can be quite dry/unenthusiastic at times, but overall a pretty solid guy.
Aamir is a great, engaging professor when it comes to Economics. You can tell he is passionate about the field. His lectures slides alone can get you through the course. Do all the assignments and practice questions for midterm review. Final was more theory based and little more difficult. Will take another course with him.
Extremely bad experience.
The exams do not reflect what he says- it is rather the opposite. Told us to study one thing, and another came up. Overall, it was not the great experience ever!
Hashmi is a great professor that really cares about his students. If you take him, make good use of his office hours as he enthusiastically clears concepts up for you and relates them to real-life and current events. The topics he teaches are not easy and you will need to put in the time to succeed in his class. He is experienced in teaching macro.
Great lecturer, and a very smart man who likes to challenge his students. Just be aware of his sneak attack exam questions. Tough convoluted algebra is his way of making this course tough to get an A. He uses pop quiz tophats almost every lecture so you have to be there. I would take more classes with him.
Hashmi is a solid prof, his slides are very thorough and lectures are very clear as well. If you dont show up there is obviously a higher chance u will not do good cuz theres top hat. The only problem I have with him is that hes very dry and boring in his lectures, also outside of class hes not very accessible and can come off rude at times.
Hashmi comes off as very professional and organised and i find his teaching style suits me a lot better! He tricks you in exam and tests you on certain facts (e.g. "What is the unemployment rate in Canada now?) i was completely caught off guard! Overall, he's an amazing prof and he knows how to discipline his students to ensure everyone learns!
Hashmi was a decent prof overall. His notes were good enough to get you by the course. Tutorials and lectures were mandatory because of top hat quizzes. Found the tutorials to be a waste of time. Assignments took quite a bit of time (some had 30-70 questions). Decent lecturer, was dry and boring sometimes but otherwise wasn't too bad.
you have to attend the lectures because he does in class quizzes. he is a good prof, makes sure everyone understands the material. However, reading the textbook is very important.
In short, keep track in class or you'll not do good. Aamir is very approachable and helpful in his office hours though.
Would not recommend this to anyone that needs to take core econ courses. Hashmi obviously really loves what he does, but he's a terrible prof in terms of relaying his thought process on certain subjects to the class. He tends to ramble on irrelevant things and doesn't give clear enough 'solutions' to things.
Hashmi's a nice guy but his teaching style and the way the course is formatted makes it really tough. He teaches extremely fast and the concepts in this class are pretty abstract so it makes it hard to pick up on what you need to know for exams. His exams are also very tough and had low-class averages but they were curved
An underrated prof. Hashmi is a really nice guy. He posts advice on how to study unlike most profs, provides lots of practice material and goes over em in class. Be sure to make good use of his office hrs as he can clear up ur questions in simple words since this aint an ez course. Tends to make concepts interesting and relatable to real life.
Very underrated. Does everything from posting all his lectures, practice questions and lots of past exams, even goes over all the practice questions in lecture. He is one of the only few profs who explicitly posts tips on how to succeed in the course. He is very encouraging to students even if they give wrong answers during participation.
Dude gives us brutal exams, featuring things we never covered in class, and then refuses to release the separate grades for our finals.
Professor Hashmi is very tough and does not allow the students to have their cameras on or ask questions during class. The assignments were only worth 10% all together and had at least 60-80 questions in each and we had about 6 of them. The final was worth 45% and it really dropped my final grade. Very hard final and his grade distribution was bad.
Very passionate professor, you can tell he loves his field! Generous in marking and gives many easy mark opportunities. Do the reading assignments and get an easy 5%. His lectures do get boring sometimes but he is very detailed and his slides cover most of the information in the textbook. Study hard for midterms and final as they are worth a lot!
Mr. Hashimi may be passionate about teaching econ, however, he makes me to hate not only econ but learning in general. If anyone thinks the final exam is based on the lessons learned in class, it sure will be an absolute tragicomic!!! What is the purpose of giving tests when its whole purpose is just to prove you fail???
Hashmi is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Lectures cover 90% of what you need to know, so you'll still have to read the textbook. His assignments are quite lengthy but provide great practice for the midterms and final. Very test-heavy course, so make sure to put in a good amount of effort and time into studying for those.
Puts the most effort I've ever seen in classes. Very good at explaining things. If you like economics, you will appreciate this guy's passion for the subject. Probably my favourite professor.
Professor Hashmi has lot of knowledge about his subject, his lectures are really good and wants you to understand the content more than memorizing it, because his test are not easy if you haven't understood the content as he is very creative in making exam questions.
Very nice Prof. who seems to really care, lectures were a bit dry, and concepts not totally clear. Not the worst, but not the best out there.
Organized and very clear. Nothing special though and hes kind of tough on you. Wouldnt mind having him again though (:
Hes a tough prof but good at explaining the concepts. In his midterm and final exam, you can only answer one question at a time, and once you answer the question and move on, you can't go back and change your answer. Not a very efficient way to evaluate a student's knowledge to be honest.
Lectures are just him playing videos that are already on d2l. Might as well just watch those as he wastes a lot of time in class and is very slow. Also 52% of the class got LESS than 60% grade on the last midterm. this is a sign he should teach better or make the tests easier. that being said, he is a nice and knowledgeable guy
Professor Hashmi is a very knowledgeable prof and he's very accessible outside of class. He took the time to answer my questions and it has helped me better understand the material. That being said, his midterms are brutal. His assignments at 10x easier than the midterms and the amount calculations in the midterm makes me feel like a math major
he doesn’t care about any one’s life. Tests not just difficult because a lot of people said so (he would never care about that alone) they’re difficult because HALF THE CLASS got below a 60 and it was similarly bad on the first midterm. That many ppl failing an introductory Econ course??? Make it easier or start teaching better like what
A smart prof and great guy, just extremely hard midterms/exams. Topic assignments and reading assignments were overall simple and lectures are easy to follow and well explained, but the actual exams will have you stressing big time.
I took Econ 303 in Fall 2021. He teaches us to solve written problems as assignments which helps a lot in the test. His tests are related to lectures and videos. As long as you watch his videos and read the textbook, you will get a very high mark. He is not tricky.
A little distracting because he is so cute... lol. He is my fav professor though and he is hot. -EH
Beware of the extremely brutal exams. You only have around two minutes for each question if you want to finish on time and most of them are questions that need calculations so good luck if you're planning on taking Econ with Hashmi
Professor Hashmi is great for lectures. I found that watching lectures than reading the textbook helped me to gain an understanding of the subjet. The assignments are quite long. Also very test heavy and they are not easy. Exams had an average of close to 50% so get ready for that.
Hard class but the guy knows his stuff. Disliked that he used recorded videos but he explained things well and used examples everyone can relate to so as to explain important concepts. His grading is weird: 45% final and assignments are 40-70 questions long and very time-consuming. He also has literally no tolerance for nuisances (I mean it)
Acts as if we are all econ majors...all the midterms are extremely difficult even tho the assignments are easy. He needs to go easy on us, especially for an intro course. He is very passionate about economics, but since his exams are extremely difficult, it makes it hard to appreciate his passion.
Expecting too much from students. He himself said it. He only cares about the top 3-5% of the class who get an A for his tests. A = above 80 Made me hate economics
DROP THIS CLASS. Tests are brutal and plummet your mental health. Assignments are long, and nothing like the tests. I don't know why he likes making people suffer -- especially in an intro class
Assignments are very long and time consuming and the midterms are hard. But, he is extremely accessible outside of class and will answer all the questions that you have. The final was surprisingly easier than the midterms. Make sure you attend his midterm review sessions if you want to do good on the test.
If you can drop this class, do it. Midterms were unnecessarily difficult for an intro level class. Assignments were long and did not help with the actual tests. The only bright side was that the final was reasonable. Nice guy but this class made me despise economics.
His exams were very difficult but they all get curved so it doesn't really matter as long as you're doing well relative to everyone else. His lectures and lecture slides were very good, and he was accessible outside of class. Gave good advice for finals prep as well.
I finally passed this class with a great mark after failing all my midterms. He helped me a lot with my weakness and gave me advice. I like this cute guy. He is the best prof everrrrr.
I liked Hashmi a lot. His exams were extremely hard but everything is curved so if you do good relative to others its easy to get a good grade. The textbook isn't necessary, just read the slides, watch the lecture videos, and do the extra practice questions under self-assessments and you should be fine
Terrible, very disrespectful towards students, decent prof at best, learnt better reading out of the textbook. Midterms are out of this world hard no matter how well you prepare.
Not necessarily a bad prof as his lectures are very organized and clear but all of his exams (which is most of your grade) are HORRENDOUS. Class average was religiously in the 50s and 60s. Doesn't matter how prepared you are. This class gave me so much unnecessary stress it was awful.
Hashmi really cares about his students and their understanding of the course he teaches. He gives very good lectures and they are quite engaging compared to other Econ professors. The only downside is that his exams are insanely difficult, make sure to study a lot and prepare well to do great in this class.
Two midterms and the final make up 85% of your total grade, all of which he makes insanely difficult. Averages were typically 50-60%, so make sure you attend his midterm review sessions. Assignments were also long, ranging from 30-70 questions. Nice guy, accessible outside of class, and was passionate about economics, but I wouldn't recommend him.
Prof. Hashmi is mediocre. He played videos of himself teaching that were recorded 3 years ago during LIVE LECTURES. Makes tests confusing and unnecessarily difficult, he adds way too much math to problems that don't really need it. He makes studying economics a very unpleasant experience. When I took this course, around 62% of the class dropped.
Aamir cares a lot about what he teaches, he always gives his best effort, is readily accessible after class in office hours, and genuinely wants all his students to succeed. Even if the classes he teaches can sometimes be tough I highly recommend taking him (but be ready to put in effort to succeed).
The best prof I have met so far. His Econ 303 class this spring is so straightforward and well-organized. For his class, you don't have to read hundreds of pages from the PowerPoint as he will write his own notes in class to explain the concept.
He was okay. The class was hard and tests were hard.
There is a lot of homework, but it is not marked for correctness, and he completes a lot of it for you in class. If you skip, you almost certainly won't pass. Lectures were the most valuable ones I've had in my degree. The methods used aren't found in the textbook, so again, do not skip! Hashmi cares a lot, though the class is pretty tough.
If you go to his classes and listen to his feedback, you'll do well. One of the better ECON profs, highly recommend.
Great guy. Really cares and teaches everything you ask him about.
Don't skip class; all HW questions are answered in class. He writes and presents notes during lecture and posts it to D2L afterwards, but you need to attend class to understand it. This is crucial for the exams--people who did well were the people who showed up 80-100% of the time. Overall, great prof who is very clear and organized in lecturing.
Lectures are clear, but exams are insanely difficult. Use Unstuck AI, study sessions, and the free textbook to prepare. Tough class, but doable with the right approach.
He is a professor who uses handwritten notes in class and does not rely on slides. The midterm and final exams were reasonable if you completed the activities and attended the tutorials. He is very passionate, caring toward his students. Overall, a great professor, though this semester's final exam was a bit challenging for everyone.
