Take another prof. if you can! He is very unclear, and there are frequent errors in his notes, which are handwritten scribbles on a transparency (he does give some incomplete notes on BB too). It's a VERY boring lecture and tests are hard. Seriously, take another prof.
GET A DIFFERENT PROF! I am reataking the class and doing worse in it than the first time through. Very unclear notes, impossible exam! Trick questions that has more than one correct answer but expects you to pick the best one. Tests are over tiny details that are from the book. Get out of the class if you can!
Lots of material, nice guy, helpful in office, got better as semester went, questions from end of chapter questions also
Prof. cannot teach. His exams are impossible and his lectures are so boring people sleep through them. I have to re-take the class because of him, and I worked hard! Take anyone else if you can!
Lazy note-takers might consider him unclear, but if you know how to take notes you can do just fine. He likes to rush toward the end of lecture and fly through important topics...say something and he'll explain it better. Read the book, do the practice problems, and study..imagine that...do the work and you can do well...radical concept, eh?
Unless you intend on dedicating every waking moment of your existence to this class get another professor...you will regret it if you don't...won't curve...gave out 4 As in a class of over 100 students...just take it with someone else
Yes, his exams are tough and he covers a ton of material in lecture, but if you take good notes and actually study them, you'll do fine. If you're looking for an easy A, he's not the prof for you, but don't let the workload discourage you if you're willing to put forth an effort.
He has no idea how to write an exam. I studied my rear off for that class I went and talked to him in his office and I still have to retake that class. Take anyone but him for Micro.
This is the worst proff i have ever had. I am an A/B student and could not pass the class. I took tons of notes, read the book, outlined the chapters, did practice problems and started studing a week before the exam and still failed them. He focused on little details and not on general topics. We covered all but four chapters in the book.
Yeah....he's hard. I am an A- student & I got a B. I reviewed notes & skimmed the book quickly before exams. You'll likely need more than that for an A! Makes frequent errors in the notes, exams are hard but not impossible, and grade based solely on 4-5 exams and a cumul. final. He's well intentioned, but I would recommend another prof if possible
By far the worst teacher i have ever had at GV. He's a nice guy, but a terrible teacher... expects way too much of you. i've never failed a class in my life but guess what!? ..failed this one miserably. it doesn't matter how much you study because he expects way too much of you. do not take him!!!!!
I don't know what all these whiners are complaining about. I didn't read a page from the book, and I wound up with an A-. he covers a lot of material, but if you just study your notes (assuming you took good notes), the exams are straight forward and easy
He knows a lot of stuff but spends the whole class time trying to prove how knowlegeable he is instead of trying to teach it to us on a level that we can understand. I took very good notes, but nothing was applicable. Class time would have been better spend studying the text by myself and filling in the notes
Worst professor ever! Covers WAY too much material for an intro level class and expects too much of students. Very little of what he covers in class is on his exams and he pulls random, insignificant sentences out of the book for questions. Be prepared to read the entire book and study A LOT in order to do well. He is very difficult.
I don't understand what everyone is complaining about. I have him for 322 and 323, and had him for 212 and 213, and he is the nicest, most helpful guy you could meet. He is always willing to clarify and spend time outside of class on something confusing. Yes, the subject matter is hard, but what else do you expect from a BMS class?
Run away- as fast as you can from this professor. He is a nightmere!!! Take anyone else but him. Unrealistic tests. Says you have to read the book but that didnt help too much. Goes off on tangents that are way to deep for what we really need to know. Wants you to know all about his research so pay attention to that if you cant get out of his class
What is everyone whining about? Professor Baxter is super helpful, and his exams are all multiple choice. People who think his class is difficult should probably pick a new major, because this is nothing compared to upper level BMS classes. Go to class, pay attention to notes, and you will do absolutely fine.
I had Baxter for 412 & 413. I'm not sure what all of you are crying about. Micro is difficult no matter what prof you have. Baxter is very intelligent and more than willing to help you with any part of the class...all you have to do is ask. If you can't handle Intro to micro you might as well switch majors now. It's collage not high school..study!
Micro is a very difficult subject and will take a lot of hard work to get a decent grade. Dr. Baxter is a very fair professor and is always available to help. Some of his test questions are quite difficult so take your time when taking exams so you don't make silly errors
The guy who just said that micro is hard and if you can't grasp it you need to switch majors, needs to learn how to spell college or just go ahead and drop out now.
Very nice, respects students, loves when you show an interest. See him personally to ask Qs about exams content, what he expects, & take advantage of his warnings! Do extra credit it's enough to help. Use previous exams to study for final. Check your answers after tests, if you find a mistake tell him! Be friendly and he will return your kindness!
I feel that for how hard I worked in this class and with all that I remember from this class,my grade does not at all reflect how hard I worked. He is a really nice guy, willing to help you, but his teaching methods are not the best. Going to lecture sometimes feels pointless because you don't understand what he is saying. I wouldn't recommend hi
not the guy to take micro with. his tests are too random which means he all he cares about is the memorization of minute details instead of the students actually learning micro. i am pre-professional student, not unlike may more of you, and that requires that i learn the material not have the ability to recall useless micro history.
Lectures are good and he covers the book material basically verbatim. Tests are absolutely terrible. Random detail from the book, sometimes not even covered in class. Instead of having questions on ideas and themes with some detail, it is all random useless detail. Worst tests I've had in 5 years of college. Avoid if possible.
Great guy, not a very good professor. He loves micro so much that he gets really excited and goes off on tangents. Its not an easy subject to understand. I find myself teaching it to myself because I cannot process what he is saying at the speed in which he is saying it. He is willing to help but his tests are hard, I would take anyone else.
Nice guy, very hard. He goes extremely fast in lecture. His tests are ridiculous. I read all the book and took notes on it and studied all his notes and there would still be about 10 questions that I had no idea where they came from. 12 pop quizzes and no extra credit! Run away and get someone else if you want to maintain your sanity!
The worst professor I've had in any class I've taken the last 4 years. Don't take him, he goes very fast and takes rediculous questions from lectures and the book that nobody should ever ask on an exam.
I enjoyed him. Have to read ahead of class lecture or it will be too much. He scaled exams now and then. Very helpful in office hours or just to talk to when you see him on campus. Nice guy. Lots of material.
He's a great teacher. It's a hard class though when you have no interest in micro. I actually ended up learning a lot from this class, even though my grade didn't reflect it. He's helpful, answers questions, and gives a tiny curve when necessary. If you want to walk away from a class learning something, take him.
Don't blame Baxter for a bad grade in Micro; the subject matter is extremely detailed and intensive. If you want to do well, take notes on the reading, review the online quizzes and end-of-chapter quizzes (he takes some for each of his tests), and go to his office hours to clarify. He's very willing to help students out; you just have to ask.
Rumor has it that micro will soon become a weeder class. In the last year, Baxter's students did much better than other 212 profs. Micro isn't easy with any prof. Do the work. If you really want to be in the science/health fields, you will do fine. If you are failing and crying, you should probably get out of any major requiring REAL science
micro is hard period, but Baxter is pretty much the best prof that teaches it. exam material comes from note packets that he posts on bb, but you still have to take notes. DO NOT CRAM and READ the book...or else you will fail. also go to his office. really nice and helpful guy. I got an A- easy. if you aren't willing to do the work, then you should probably change your major and avoid any REAL science.
Prof. Baxter is awesome he has a lot of funny relvent life stories and he does a good job answering questions. If you go see him during his office hours he is VERY helpful. Micro is not easy but I honestly feel like I benefited from having Prof. Baxter. I highly recommend him he is great and very passonate about microbes!
Dr. Baxter is not easy by any means, but if you put the time into this class, you will leave with a good knowledge of micro. As it has been said, he is super helpful especially in office hours, and explains the material very well. Dr. Baxter will prepare you very well for any sort of grad school! I really benefited from having him!
He's a nice guy, but I suggest taking this class during a semester that you don't have other pre-req classes or just an easy semester if you want a decent grade. Averages on his exams seemed to be low. Get ahead at the BEGINNING of the semester or else you will have a very tough time trying to play catch-up--exams are the only grades.
I will start of by saying that Baxter is extremely nice and always willing to help. However, needless to say, this is the hardest course I have taken in the Health related sciences. If your study every day and attend class an A might be attainable. However, must of the class struggled on his exams.
Dr. Baxter is a great guy and super helpful and eager to answer questions during his office hours. The class is hard but I don't think it really has anything to do with him. I feel that micro would be hard and at times overwhelming with any professor. If you are a crammer, this isn't the professor (or class) for you. Just keep up with the material!
Dr. Baxter's class was enjoyable. Never dreaded going to class. You can tell he loves what he does-very passionate about microbio. I am a 4.0 student & got an A- in class with lots of time & effort. The exams are your only grades. I reccommend to read the book to understand material even better. Keep up with the material. Tough, but not impossible
Baxter is a very nice guy although he is not for everyone. He lectures fast, and tends to be a bit harder than some other profs. However, he is very helpful and generally has several office hours a week. I liked having him and he helped me with some of my applications to grad school. Take his class seriously and you will do fine.
He is a really nice funny and knowledgeable guy but seriously? His tests and grading is a joke. it makes him feel good that he strives to be the hardest test giver. ?? REALLY ???
He does expect his students to know every detail of what's said in class and what's in the book and he will be very particular when grading. His class is very hard, no doubt, but he is always available to answer questions and his lectures are enjoyable if you're interested in the subject. Take his class if you plan on going to med school. It helps
Takes no responsibility for below-average exam scores. Probably a nice guy and good microbiologist, but it will be up to you to teach yourself the material. Beware of dreadfully worded questions on the exams.
He is a very nice guy that is passionate about what he teaches. However, he does not treat this class as an intro level class. Hardest tests I have ever taken. Seems like a nice guy, but if you can avoid taking his class do it. He acts as if he doesn't care that a majority of the class is doing poorly. I wish I would have taken a different prof.
Very unorganized, jumps around between topics so much that it's extremely unclear as to what the info actually pertains to, exams consist of 60-70 tedious detail multiple choice questions w/in 50 minutes. An overall agitating prof - the book is easier to comprehend & study from!
He's the toughest prof I've ever had, but I feel prepared for med school now!
This is a weeding class. It's hard, and if you can't handle it you shouldn't be going into the medical field. Prof Baxter teaches what you should know and he does it well. Just beware of some of the exam questions, he makes them tricky. Great guy and always there to explain something outside of class.
Hard, weeding out class. Doesn't care for students. Smart guy, but hard
Yes this is a weeding class. Prepare to work for your grade. Prof cares a great deal about students but you MUST put forth the effort. If you have struggled in lower level science classes it's doubtful you will do well.
Dr. Baxter is a kind professor who really cares about his students! His tests are tough and he expects a lot, so I wouldn't recommend this class for an elective unless you really love microbiology (I took it credit/no credit). That being said, I really enjoyed the class and feel that Dr. B did everything he could to help us if we wanted help!
Great guy, tough class. He REALLY makes you work for his grades. I also had him for Intro Microbiology, and really, really learned a lot. He has a passion for the subject that's just as infectious as the microbes you study in class. Be focused and work hard, and you should do just fine in his class.
Baxter really makes you work for your grade. If you aren't able to make his class your top priority, don't expect better than a C. Also, his notes are very unclear. That being said, he cares deeply about Microbiology and is always willing to help.
Baxter really loves microbiology, you can tell by how he lectures. He is willing to help but you need to study almost constantly because of how much material is on every exam. I have learned a lot but have also stressed a lot about this class. Be prepared for very specific questions on exams.
Love this guy. Super passionate, really relates career with class, teaches you a lot. Super smart, quirky, nerdy, and fun. Exams are a little tough but some questions are straight from homework/old exams. Only negative I have to say is if you do bad on one exam your stuck with it. Don't have a bad day.
Interesting lectures, but make sure you take notes the whole time, not just on what he writes because he doesn't use full sentences. It's Microbio - not going to be easy. Homework takes long but its with good intentions. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS HE POSTS - he uses exact questions from them. He's quirky and nerdy in an funny way, tells relevant stories
Dr. Baxter really cares about his students and will get you any help you need. It's an interesting class but it's A LOT of material. Don't bother buying either of the books, he tests off of lecture only and writes his notes out on the board for you. You'll need to work hard for a good grade but he's a great professor!
Dr. Baxter is an excellent professor. While prepping for exams required more time than the average class, the information learned was interesting and practical. What he expects is very clear and outlined, but also high in volume. Attend lectures and fill in his outline and you will be all set. Best professor I've had in a while!
Dr. Baxter is an amazing professor. His enthusiasm about microbiology is truly contagious! I was never bored in lecture. It is a very difficult course, but not because of the way Dr. Baxter teaches. He is more than willing to provide extra help, and is overall a kind guy. Study well and work hard, but you'll be just fine.
Dr. Baxter is, without a doubt, the best professor I had at GVSU. He made us work for our grades, but not in a way that was tricky/unreasonable. He always gave us all the information/resources we needed to be successful and was always available for help. Just be prepared to work, don't get behind, and enjoy his stories!! This class was awesome.
Dr. Baxter is a really nice guy who is willing to help his students. He loves to talk and often times our labs would go longer because of it, but it is helpful because he breaks the labs down so they're easier. He makes lab exams very long and there's lots of writing. He can be a picky grader as well. Our exams were much longer than other labs.
It is possible to do well in this class permitting that you denote several days of your life to studying and rereading the textbook word for word, only to realize how much he lacks cohesiveness in lectures. Besides this, be prepared to listen to the most nasally and obnoxious voice that exists. Absolutely anal questions on exams w/ MC options A-G.
Personality and expertise-wise, Dr. Baxter was great. Makes you work for your grade though. 4 exams and a final, with supplemental HW. All multiple choice. Go to class or find a partner to provide good notes for days missed. An A is obtainable. Focus on the information provided in the slides and supplement it with reading the chapters. Goodluck!
You can tell Baxter cares about the material, but is not efficient teaching. The class is completely dependent on you to teach yourself. Exams are extremely heavy, wordy and tricky with multiple MC questions reaching A to G. Just about every detail in the textbook is expected to be memorized so do yourself a favor and read a little every night.
Honestly the hardest class I've taken in my three years at GV. You have three exams average 8-10 pages long, and a final that is expected to be longer. They are fully written exams where you need to know every little detail from the lab manual. Take literally any other professor because their exams are 1-2 pages and way less material.
This class is hard. The professor uses four exams, two quizzes, final unknown assignment, and a final exam for grading. He is tough. This ONE CREDIT class meets TWICE A WEEK FOR TWO HOURS. This one-credit class you will spend more time studying for than your other three credit classes you take in the same semester as other classes. Good luck.
I really did not learn much at all from Baxter's class. His lectures are only a small fraction of what is on the exams so be prepared to take extensive notes on your own time. His exam questions are very specific and have choices A through G. This class is a weed out no doubt so be prepared to work.
His exams are so specific that if you don't remember that one fact from the textbook then you are screwed. You need to read the book in order to get all of the info. If he doesn't have time to finish the material during class then you are on your own to figure it out. He is known in the department to be one of the hardest micro profs.
He's incredibly hard for lecture, but take him for lab! He is very descriptive and gives two easy quizzes through the lab course that can cushion your grade. He is very willing to help and meet with you if you have questions. He cares very much if you understand the material. This lab is purely memorization. I made a ton of flashcards and got an A
One of the best professors I've ever had. He truly cares about his students and wanting them to succeed. The class deals with a ton of information, but if you stay on top of it, you should do well! Professor Baxter is very passionate about Micro and I think thats one of the reasons the class was so interesting!
Horrible instructor. His exams are the most specific and difficult that you will likely ever take. He seems to take pleasure in making his class as difficult as possible. If you don't memorize every single minor detail of everything covered in the class, you won't do very well. Made class even harder after moving things online due to COVID-19.
Exams are incredibly difficult and mostly short answer. He focuses heavily on small, specific details so you basically have to memorize the whole manual. Our exams were always much longer than other sections. And he lectures for the first 45min so class always went long. He's a nice guy but way too tough for a 1 cr. class. Make sure you take notes!
He's lectures are interesting because he knows what he is talking about and adds stories to his lectures. His tests are all multiple choice with online hw. His tests are averagely hard, but VERY heavy on the book. About half of the questions asked are straight out of the textbook instead of his skeleton notes lectures. Never posts the slides after.
Yes, you should read the lab manual, but it's *very* brief, and the majority of exam content comes from the lecture before lab. My lab was nearly almost finished 30 min-1 hour before the end of the lab period, and the exams were very fair/comparable to any BMS class. Prof Baxter is approachable, kind, passionate and knowledgable. Solid choice.
I loved Baxter! He was so quirky and such a nerd for micro that it really made me want to pay attention during lectures. I highly recommend taking as many notes as you can including side notes that he states in class. Exams weren't too bad if you keep up with your stuff! Probably your best bet at a micro professor for lecture :)
Best prof Ive ever had. Also the most detail oriented prof Ive ever had. If you work hard to understand the material properly (not just memorization), you will do great! Best study strategy: Flashcards (a lot of them). He is super wholesome and geeky in a good way. He is very willing to help if he sees that you are putting in effort.
Mircobiology is HARD infact it is the one and only college class I have dropped. I wish I would've went to Baxter's office hours sooner as it may have made a difference. His exams are incredibly hard, but he is very accessible in office hours and really does want to see his students succeed. If you are willing to go the extra mile, take him.
I knew going into this class that it was going to be hard, but I truly think that his exams are extremely unfair. Even going to office hours did not help me. He is super nice as a person but the exams are just too much. I spent well over 40 hours a week on just this class. The material was fair but the exams were extremely difficult.
If you care about your GPA, take anyone else. Exams are insanely hard, no matter how long you study for
He is the nicest man, but I think he thrives on making his class as hard as possible. Graded by 4 exams, and if you don't study the most minute details, you won't do well. Highly recommend not taking him as a lab professor. He expects you to memorize every detail and answer them in short answer format. HARDEST ONE CREDIT COURSE YOU WILL EVER TAKE!!
Dr. Baxter is a nice guy but he made this class way harder than it needed to be, esp for being 1 credit. His exams were the hardest exams I have ever taken. You need to know EVERYTHING we cover in class (not exaggerating) in order to do well on the exams and he'll mark you down for the smallest, most irrelevant details. Don't take if you want an A.
Dr. Baxter is a nice guy but he made this class way harder than it needed to be, esp. for being 1 credit. His exams were the hardest I've ever had to take and you need to know EVERYTHING we learn in class in order to do well on them. He'll also mark you down for the smallest, most irrelevant details. If you want an A, find another professor.
Dr. Baxter is a nerdy professor but his course content was OVERLOAD. There was so much information packed into one exam and there was not enough time to take in all the information and understand it well enough to where you know everything for the exam. His intentions were good but overall his teaching style was not for me and was VERY HARD!!
This was the hardest class I've taken at GVSU and this prof didn't help. The only grades are exams, and they are all extremely specific and difficult. There is so much information packed into this class and he expects you to know every detail. I worked so hard and studied more than ever and I barely got a B-. You need to work extremely hard.
The amount of work you have to put in for this class is ridiculous considering it's only worth 1 credit. Attend all the labs in person if it's possible, this will be very helpful for the Unknown project you will have. Know the material inside and out and it's possible to do well!
This class is very challenging for a 1 credit class. Baxter was very friendly and knowledgeable, but you will have to put a ton of time into his class if you want a decent grade. Exams are primarily written, and cover every detail of material. Go to the lab if you can - it is helpful and interesting.
I will say he is nice; however, he does NOT treat this like an intro course. There is no consistency with things to study. There is so much information to know. Granted, micro is going to be hard, but to obtain an A, you literally have to study 40 hours per week which is outrageous. If you can take someone else, do it. Test are VERY detailed.
For someone as passionate as Baxter, he is HIGHLY ineffective in teaching this material. We are only graded on exams and the overall average of our homework grades (1 test grade) Tests are long and difficult. Focuses on small details. Unwilling to help individualize students needs. Told me to "read study tips on Blackboard" to help me succeed
Nice and approachable; however, he was so unwilling to help me when I reached out to him. His exams are ridiculous (final is 150 ?'s) He should not be teaching an intro course. He expects way too much out of students who don't have a background in micro. Exams make up the majority of your grade. Had to drop a class just to focus on this one 0/10
Hybrid. Pre-recorded lectures were way easier than his in person lectures. In person, he talks to you as if you were an expert instead of actually teaching. He will start the next exam material days before our current exam is even posted, so you are always behind unless you simultaneously study for two exams at once. His class traumatized me...
Success in a class needs to come from the students and the professor. Baxter gives you the information and then leaves you on your own to figure it out it more detail. He's not willing to make changes to the way he teaches even though he can clearly see his students struggling. He values his pride more than he values the success of his students
Wow, this class was the hardest class I have EVER taken. I spent 40+ hours on exams and would still do pretty bad. I want to say it's just the material for micro is insane, but I think it also was the prof, because he really did NOT give any hints on what part of the notes to focus on - and there were 30+ pages of notes/exam. Barely made it through
Prof Baxter is a super nice, goofy guy, and he is so passionate about microbio. He is extremely approachable and easy to talk to. However if you want an A, dont take this class with him. His exams are all short answer and grades them ridiculously hard. I spent more time on this 1 credit class than i did my 3 credit and i got a C.
This course is difficult in general, but Dr. Baxter only grades students based on homework (5) and exams (5) which makes it more difficult to achieve a good grade. The exams seem to be only a week or so apart and there are no breaks between units so retaining info is tricky. The final is cumulative and had TONS of material. Study hard !
Never worked so hard for a C in my life and the only reason I made it was because of the curves for each exam and the cumulative homework grade which is one exam grade. Put in SO many hours of work just to barely pass. Cumulative final was surprisingly my best exam grade. My overall test average was a 75% with the curves.
Baxter's class is SO HARD. I studied for hours and still didn't do well. He is a very good teacher and very passionate about his stuff, but man there is way too much material to do well.
If you really want to do well in this class you need to put in the work. I think homework was useless, but it was easy points to help boost your grade. It would have been beneficial to have homework that would prepare us for exams since it was application based. If you fall behind you're screwed. He is passionate and has humour.
This is a tough class to begin with. Prof Baxter doesn't make it any easier with take-home exams that take 10+ hours to complete, and questions that are very unclear, and assume you know what he was thinking when he wrote them. Combined with the fact he is a tough grader, it's the worst. Nice guy, but horrible prof that really shouldn't be teaching
Seems to expect that you spend all of your free time on this class alone. Forgets that the students haven't been working in the field for decades like him. This course is also poorly designed and crams way too much into a single class to really be able to learn and understand the broader concepts
This is a tough class but if you remember what you learned in the pre-reqs and study the material everyday instead of cramming, you'll do fine. A lot of the low scores are from winers.
Although attendance isn't enforced I highly recommend going to ALL the lectures, if you miss even one you're pretty much screwed. I am not exaggerating when I say you need to write down everything he says in lectures not just when he writes. Reading the textbook will help but most of the exam questions comes from his lectures.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend going to every class because you can only get the notes in class. He is a very difficult prof but not unbearable. Microbio is a lecture/information heavy class so get ready to spend a lot of time understanding the material. Baxter is passionate, but he isn't the best teacher.
Micro is a hard class, Baxter doesn't help this at all. There are 100 hw points and the rest are exams. Need to understand concepts in depth from lectures and read the book to perform average. He knows a lot but lectures fast and doesn't post notes, and talks past the end of class. Expect lots of outside work, not reasonable for an intro course.
Baxter was a decent prof, his lectures were pretty interesting and he is a nice guy, but his exams were so so so hard. I studied more for this class than any of my others and it was my lowest grade of the semester. There was too much detailed content per exam. I wouldn't say to avoid him at all costs but be prepared to study a ton.
The worst professor I have ever had. If you get him switch out! I am usually an A student and I struggled hard in this class. I went to his office hours and he told me it was okay to fail one class and provided no encouragement at all. He is proud of how difficult his tests are and acts like this is the only class you have.
Microbio is hard in general, so prepare to put in the time to do well. Do a little every day and you will be fine (he recommends this too). He tends to rush through lectures, but if you go see him in office hours he will clear it up for you. Tests are difficult, but manageable if you prepare well. Don't wait until the last minute to get help!
By far the worst professor I have ever met. No matter how many times I seeked help and went to his office hours, he simply just does not care for his students. He will tell you it is okay to fail, which is by far the worst thing to hear from your prof. The entire grade is primarily just exams as well. I strongly recommend nobody takes this class.
Baxter is a good person but not a very good professor. This class is highly just over exams and only 100 points for homework the entire semester. He talks the entire lecture just going off his slides and makes his lectures not engaging at all.
Very good class! He covers everything on his tests in lecture, you just have to make sure not to miss a class honestly. If you start studying for the exams early, they're not that hard, he just covers a lot of material at once. He usually curves the exams and his lectures are pretty interesting.
Baxter was the worst professor I have had at GV. He only curves exams 5% making it nearly impossible to get a good grade. The exams are very specific and only 100 points go towards homework and the rest are exams. Micro is a hard class and Baxter did nothing to supplement. His lectures were extremely boring. If you want to pass, don't take Baxter!
Incredible lectures, very hard exams. I have never felt more confident in a prof's competence. He is always willing to help in/outside of office hours and is very kind. I have never studied more for a class but also have never learned more in one. If you are serious about medicine/microbio/etc., this is the professor to take.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Awful professor. He is a very nice guy, but his teaching style sucks. His tests are near impossible and he does not give study guides (gives unhelpful slideshows). Be prepared to study all the time for this 1 credit lab. I just think he makes everything more detailed and harder than it needs to be for this class. STUDY the labs!
Baxter was an amazing professor for Micro Lab and Lecture. You need to attend lecture if you expect to do well in this class. Take good notes and review them often. The tests are tough, but not impossible. It is not unattainable to get an A. Microbiology is just a hard class. Baxter was enthusiastic and always well prepared!
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! Bms 212 is so hard at grand valley. The exams are very hard, way more in depth. Have 60+ slides for each unit are are expected to memorize it all and more. Had to drop the class as usually good student. Literally avoid at all costs
Don't take. If other profs are open, join their course. Needed to know more for this prof's exams compared to others. All microbio classes are the same aka 4-5 exams and hw. Baxter is a great guy but should not be teaching intro level courses as lectures are straight info dumps and get off topic. Book doesn't match lecture, he doesn't post notes.
If you can fit a different professor into ur schedule do it. The whole class is 5 exams where it is all based on his lecturing which is far more in depth than need be. I was taking a pathophysiology class at the same time and Baxter went more in depth on immune cells than that class. His exams are very hard.
Very hard tester. Very little information was given to help. This said I did enjoy his lectures. Hope to get a sweaty A-.
If other professors are available, take them. He makes his exams unnecessarily hard compared to other professors. He has no standardization in grading between students. He is extremely particular about exam answers and techniques used on quizzes. You will have to study HARD outside of class to do well, usually between 15 to 20 hours a week.
The toughest grading Professor Ive ever had. He tests you very meticulously, only wants his answers. He knocks off points for the slightest things. Goes overboard with the details he wants you to know.
Loved him as a person even though lab content was hard. Easy to talk to and even wrote me a recommendation letter despite having a rough grade. Exams are SO HARD. if you think "this wont be on the exam", there are three questions about it, minimum. study for at least a week before and know everything. spelling matters.
Dr. Baxter is one of the nicest prof's I've had at GV. That being said, this lab was excruciatingly difficult. Had to give up my spot in the nursing program because of my grade. No studying guidance whatsoever. No study guides, EXTREMELY detailed questions with very specific answers. Expects you to be a phd level microbiology student. do not take.
DONT TAKE HIM I got 4 A's this semester (including an A in the lab with a dif prof), and got a D+ in his class. There are 5 exams with 65 questions, and the final has 151, mostly a-f. I missed the 2nd exam bc of a death in the fam and he made my final count for that exam too. Exams SO hard and detailed. Avg scores were in the 60s and he never cared
