Hell of a teacher, hell of a guy. Not exactly PC, very opinionated, but he keeps class interesting and is incredibly intellegent. Refreshing to have a professor who is a lot SMARTER than the students.
smart ass, but very smart. Sick humor. Learned so much, wouldnt want any other prof.for avf10. Fair, tests are on all reading done on own time, all we do in class is watch the movie and talk about it, nothing else. Fun, if willing to work ull get an A
You can do well in this class or get buried. The discussions were better than many of the movies. This man knows his craft as well as any professor I've had at Hofstra. Brilliant at what he does. This 4-hour class won't go a minute less.
One of the best professors I have had at Hofstra. Has an intresting sense of humor, however if you show intrest and do the projects you will have no problem. Class was enjoyable!
If you love film, you'll love Prof. Braun. He really gets into the discussions and excited about movies. He picks interesting films to show. Class is fun, and the 4 hours flies by. I would take any course taught by him!! :o)

this guy is way overrated. his class is fun cause you just watch movies. if hitler taught this class it would be fun. braun just likes to be a dick and over analyze scenes. he gives 4 essays and 2 tests. not hard to get a good grade

The rating from 5/18 is dead on. This class is NOT easy and to do well you really have to work hard.

Best professor I've ever had!
Great teacher and human being . finds films that one would not really see in any other venue, a great film philosopher. I usually rate my professors on the question would I like to talk to him at cocktail party , well the obvious answer is hell yes . Very sixties , almost a dying breed of teacher ,
GOOD GUY, FUNNY GUY, SARCASTIC BUT FUNNY, KNOWLEDGABLE OF HIS FILMS, OPEN MINDED, EASY TESTS, ESSAYS ARE A BIT TOUGH FOLLOW HIS GUIDELINES
My best film professor at hofstra by far. One of the only people/classes that doesn't make me wish I went to Tish. Braun is articulate, responsive, and down to earth. The films he screens are in great taste, and discussed in a highly intelligent, philosophical manor.
Great guy, great class discussions and very approachable. he loves his subject, don't let the ambience of the class fool you - u gotta read the books to do well on the essays/exams. Miss this class. truly enjoyable.
Easy class to BS your way through. Braun is a born BS guy himself so you know what to do. Very overrated and not really all that knowledgable if you ask good questions. Tedious.
real witty, sarcastic, down to earth, hippie, kind man in cowboy boots. For 10, do your reading, andpay attention and exams are nothing...keep notes on wat you watch, and involve yourself in conversation. He is a very diff. paper grader, but no matter ur paper grades, if you truly care about the class, and he sees that, youll pass. Very anal that your paper and your work follow his strict guidlines. Get to know him, talk with him, hes a great guy, very knowledgeable and makes many interesting points.
cool teacher, really down to earth and witty. REALLY anal about the paper writing, make sure you read the guidelines and stuff, and he really does test you on the syllabus. do the readings and you should do fine.
This guy is really down to earth, honest, and funny. He knows his movies like the back of his cowboy boot.He is a VERY tough grader when it comes to essays, but his final/midterm were very easy.Just go to class (not late) raise your hand and **** w/him while he smokes outside and you will be fine.Great teacher
Really awesome prof. Laid back & liberal w/ a keen insight 2 the info being taught. Don't take any other prof for AVF10. Braun is the man! Very helpful. This is the only 4 hour class that I would actually sit through. Fair grader- keep good communication w/ him & stay attentive through class. He really likes it when u offer your own insight.
A 4 hour class can be daunting at times, except all you do is watch movies and then talk about them. He's very against nitpicky questions or criticisms. The textbook was not used at all or even mentioned in class but the exams revolved around them. The exams were pretty hard but it still ended up being an easy A.
I can't remember a class I've enjoyed more than this. Great professor, great film choice. If you disagree with him, he'll pick on you at first, but if you hold your own you'll be golden. The tests aren't hard if you have a basic understanding of film. If you don't, well, thats why theres a textbook! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Pr Braun is really a great guy. This course requires that you are present every class to watch the movies becuase tests give quotes directly from films. The textbook should be read to answer certain parts of test. He is very clear and wants you to think when writing papers. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't re-word notes that you took in class!Great Class
Great Professor, Guy knows his movies and really encourages you to make comments in class. Doesn't like BS. Make sure you do the papers exactly to the specs he says and GO TO EVERY CLASS
Really great guy. I forgot to print my essay once and he let me print it during a break in class. Very knowledgeable.
Great professor, learned a lot about films. Attendance is important. Exams based on textbook and on quotes from the films screened.
Braun is best
The guy is cool, very funny, a little too sarcastic sometimes but w.e. Lives in Brooklyn i like him. his movie picks were interesting. They weren't moves i wanted to see, they were movies i should see as a film major. And i am glad I did. SO MUCH writing. Beware of that. He is a harsh grader. But if you are a good writer you'll be fine.
He got me hooked on Stanley Kubrick, especially The Shining, and his other movie picks ended up being good, too. He's hilarious, sarcastic, and very knowledgeable. Amazing class.
Braun is by far one of the BEST teachers I have ever had. He really knows his stuff and makes you interested in the films you watch. He's also very funny and very easygoing. The class is not crazy hard but he does expect you to follow his guidelines when it comes to essays. NO cellphones at all! He is a great guy!
Braun is a very funny, personable, odd guy who honestly just wants you to do well. He is very gruff and keeps everyone entertained during his lessons. He can spend 2 hours on 15 minutes of a film, but it's always interesting. The essays are easy and the films are mostly pretty good. Also, he swears quite a lot but it's always hilarious.
Professor Braun knows what he is talking about AND he's so chill. I had NO experience with film before this class and I still don't have an interest, but you do learn a lot from it. You watch a movie every class, and the tests are pretty straight forward. No homework, but a few papers. Pretty manageable class, but attendance is a must.
This class was awesome! The room is one giant theatre, and he chooses very popular and artistically made movies. Braun is so laid back and considerate. There are only 2 tests, and a couple papers. If you are unhappy about your grade, just talk to him; he will gladly re-grade you, or give you some extra credit. Take notes during the movies, easy A.
Bruan is the best. Chillest guy if you guys talk during class and participate you should be fine. All the movies were movies I never watched before but when I did Braun completely opened my eyes to cinema definitely worth taking his class. Woulc definitely take him class again. : )
Amazing professor, funny and very smart. I learned so much with his class.
Not an easy A, but not hard to get the A's. Read the textbook, and the tests are a piece of cake. A lot of reading. 2 chapters a week from each book. However what makes this class hard/irritating are his 2 interim paper and final paper. He was the toughest essay grader i have ever had. Very particular to grammar and his guidelines. expect to work
He is awesome and love this school......
The midterm is based off the reading vocab - lots to read, but if you focus on the study guide of terms to know in the syllabus, it will be easy. He can be picky about certain aspects of your paper (the last term paper is the longest at around 5 pages, where others average 2-3 pages). You have to work a little bit for an A in this class.
He is a great teacher with super specific analysis of movies. If you are a movie buff you should definitely take this class. Some of the movies were a little long or boring, but his lectures made the movies a lot more interesting. Participation is a big thing, but the more you talk the more entertain his lectures get. This is a must take class!
I really wish there wasn't a character limit because I could mention a million great things about this man. Exceptional personality, will go out of his way to help you get a better grade, and hilarious sense of humor. Participation and going to class matters but it's all worth it. Braun's 5 out of 5 stars.
Take a class with Braun. He's fun, but pay attention and prepare to talk a lot. No such thing as a bad comment, you just have to support it.
Coolness all around! Great class!
This professor will change the way you see movies forever, i could not recommend his class enough. The four hour length might seem daunting, but Braun actually manages to make you look forward to it. Take the class, you wont regret it.
Braun has changed the way I look at film forever. He's got an irreverent sense of humor and impeccable taste. If you pay attention to the films, take notes, and write insightful papers rather than generic commentaries, you will do well. Read the syllabus thoroughly!
Midterm: 1st: Quotes and you need to know the movie its from 2nd: fill in the blank (w/ wordbank) 3rd: multiple choice from textbook and book reading 4th: the principles of writing (IN HIS PACKET MEMORIZE ALL 12!) 5th: An essay on a character from one of the three movies he chooses 6: comments or questions about his class He's a really funny guy :D
Prof Braun is an awesome professor. Braun truly cares about each and every one of his students. Don't take his sarcastic comments seriously, he's only joking around. He opened my eyes more to the film world and made me realize so much more about films than I ever thought I would. It's the only class that I actually wanted to attend every week.
If you have a thick skin, Braun is a good teacher for you. He's very funny and a great teacher, but not very PC. Although I will say he's very apologetic and attentive if you bring something up to him that genuinely upset you. Overall good teacher, assignments aren't too hard and gives fair grades. And he is very understanding of mental illness.
Professor Braun is the man! You really only need the textbook to study for midterm, but the class is mostly a few 3 page papers on the movies viewed in class. Go to class, share your perspectives, and enjoy the films. He's hilarious, very easy going, and always accessible via email. I highly recommend him
Professor Braun is the best! I'm currently in my second class with him because the first one was so amazing. His course is really late at night and lasts four hours (breaks provided!), but please don't let this deter you!!! His commentary and obvious adoration for film is a sight to witness and I learned SO much about film from this course!
Aaron is my favorite teacher this semester. I have more energy after his 4-hour film class than I have after 55 minutes of chemistry. He has 3 papers, all with very simple prompts and clear expectations. He loves to poke fun and make a 6:30-10:30 night class bearable! I would absolutely take another one of his classes.
Braun is awesome! Even though I had to take this class online asynchronously bc of Covid, he still did a great job. He's a bit difficult at first but once you understand what he wants from you, you'll get into the swing of things. 3 papers in total (2 interim and one final), and make sure you proofread EVERYTHING! Overall, loved this class a lot.
Some found him difficult, but I liked the class! If you watched the films assigned, his questions were straightforward. However, I heard it might be more difficult for non-film majors. Braun was quick responding to emails, his essay & discussion board Qs were detailed, and he gave really helpful feedback. You have to work but an A is def achievable
professor braun is great, he gives really good feedback on your writing. he's a bit tough at first but once you get used to him he's a great guy. make sure you read the syllabus cause he's really specific about grammar. i loved him so much i'm taking another class with him this semester, i'd definitely recommend him !!
Gives horrible feedback, instead of commenting on the matters of the film he instead spends time nitpicking at the grammar of discussion board posts.
He’s like that one uncle you have that moved to Vegas when he turned 40. He teases everyone in a fun way, and his class is genuinely one of the only fun classes I have this semester. If you can take some jokes and you don’t mind being teased a little you’ll love his class. His work is really easy and the class isn’t difficult.
Updating an old review where I was out of line. I've now had Professor Braun for a few classes. He gives too much leeway to the loudest voices in the room, so a lot of discussions devolve into some of the worst comedy hours you'll ever hear, but he's not such a bad guy. You have to appreciate the knowledge and passion he brings to his lectures.
The biggest thing to know about Braun is that he is a tough grader. Make sure to read the syllabus before working on the first discussion post. The course seems hard at first, but it will gradually become easier.
He's a stickler for grammar and spelling and will deduct many points, but it's really not that hard to put your papers and discussion boards through Grammarly. He is absolutely insane but he's hilarious and an incredible teacher, super knowledgeable about film. 3 papers, weekly discussion boards, and participation. I'd die for this man. F---ing A.
Professor Braun is the absolute worst professor I have ever had, extremely rude and dismissive towards students. He manages to be overly critical about specific words/phrasing while also never providing tangible feedback and direction on assignments.
Just avoid this professor at all cost
Absolutely horrible.
Rest in peace king. Truly the best professor I have ever had. Thank you for everything.
Somehow managed to turn a Friday afternoon class from 1 to 5 p.m. into a weekly hangout. Will go down as one of the best professors I ever had. Rest in power, Professor Braun; we appreciate you.
You showed me how to analyze film. How to think outside the box, director's intent, motifs, etc. We held conversations that extended beyond the borders of the classroom, we talked about life -- real tangable life. It reminded me of days past, and I will forever be thankful for that. You deserved so much more. Rest in peace, Aaron.
