Professor Coleman is a wonderful professor! I highly recommend him. Very kind and willing to help you learn basics of lab techniques. Doing well in the class is determined by how well you understand the concepts of experiments, not just brute memorization. Understand thoroughly what he is talking about!
Seems like an easy course but those lab reports really catch you off-guard in the beginning... Prof. Coleman's nice, has somewhat difficult exams but they're ok. I recommend this class overall.
He is the best professor i've had at ucsd. He really cares about the students and explains everything clearly. He will go over difficult subjects as many times as necessary.
He is really nice and approachable if you have questions and overall a great professor. The only thing is that his voice is a little quiet so that makes it hard to hear him sometimes.
This professor is one of the most boring professors I've ever had at UCSD. I could not even keep my eyes open during lecture. But, he is very helpful at his office hours, adn he seems very nice, if that helps at all. Good Luck!
he is a good professor and extremely helpful and clear.
He is just and inconsiderate professor, who is definitely not willing to help his students and don't care at all.
Lets just say I was really interested and loved metabolic biochemistry until I met his face. His tests are easy, but are graded very unfairly. The grading system does not do you justice.
coleman is an ok prof, but doesnt really know a lot, always seemed to struggle to answer questions in lectures. class is easy but hard to get an A with his grading scale.
Don't listen to the people below. He was a perfectly competent teacher and grading is extremely fair if you just know everything on your notes and how to apply it in simple situations. He was more than willing to help anyone with anything, the homework was easy, and the tests were extremely straightforward and short. I would take him again.
Helpful during office hours. But if I had a dispute with a test question or lab report he refused to help me (and this happened often with his many vague questions). Eventually had to dispute these problems with the dean.
This class is very difficult. I believe it is more difficult than organic chemistry but this class is not even curved! Coleman moves very fast and is very vague in his lectures. He does not make it clear what you are supposed to study which makes studying a nightmare. The tests are graded very unfairly, no partial credit is given when it should be.

Lectures were dull. He didn't seem to thoroughly know the material (i.e., he always had his clip board for reference), but he wanted us to know it all. Exams were tough & graded harsh. When someone asked a Q that wasn't directly related to the material, he wouldn't even try to answer; he'd just say he's not sure and we're not learning that anyway.
Excellent lecturer on metabolic biochem. He is fairly easier than other professors and his tests aren't that bad. His homework is fairly easy. His exams are more conceptual than I would like, but they're not difficult. I highly recommend Coleman for this class.
I took him for BIBC 120 and he it is a very managable class. just make sure that u understand everything that he says in class and for the things u don't understand go to office hrs, TAs, and refer to book.I like this class because it was a good introductory course that isn't too overwhelming.I ended up learning a lot.
Very nice man, always has a smile on his face. I disagree with previous comments: he told us exactly what to study for, and was an admirable lecturer. Grade scale is horrible, though, because it's not curved.
The class is hard because the textbook doesn't do a good job of explaining the material so you have to spend lots of time trying to digest it but Coleman is a nice man and a decent lecturer. Try to study what he tells you and don't wait until the last minute then you'll be fine.

Good professor, but doesn't know how to curve grades. Only 13% As????? When the norm for curving is 25% As, you know something has to be wrong. Take another professor who already has experience curving classes, i.e. Scheffler/Yaffe/Price.
Exams are very representative of lecture+ reader material.
He's a pretty good choice for this lab. He claims he doesn't curve but he does at the end. The midterms were not too hard, but the lectures were pretty boring. The lab reports suck(3of them), but the class itself is pretty easy, not like chem labs at all.
Good instructor, thorough exams.
His Metabolic Biochem class was so easy! I took his class after failing Yaffe, and Coleman only covered like 40% of the material Yaffe did. I feel sorry for he people who only took Coleman b/c they didn't learn a lot of material, but the exams were like high school level.
Made the subject clear, tests were very fair.
Coleman was AWESOME!!! If you need to take this lab take it with coleman because he truly was amazing!!!!!
Took him for metabolics and biochem techniques. Like everyone else has said, he's very fair. He's a very pleasant person to talk to. If he hasn't covered it in lecture, he won't test you on it. If he taught another class, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!!! he is very nice and the test is extremly easy and straight forward strongly recommended =)
Took Dr. Coleman for both BIBC 102 and BIBC 103. He is perhaps the best professor I have taken at UCSD. Very clear and straight forward. The tests are easy if you study your lecture notes (don't bother with the textbook). Dr. Coleman is very helpful and extremely kind.
He's not terrible, but boy, when he puts up overheads get ready for some snooze time. The tests are reasonable and you'll be fine as long as you study the lectures. Don't bother with the book.
Mid-terms and Final are very easy if you study what he tells you to study. The lectures are very reflective of the tests. However, do not plan on getting an A in the class if you mess up on one test. While the tests are easy, the grade cutoffs are ridiculous. Have fun.
Class is straightforward, he'll tell you what's on the test, kinda [just study the homeworks]. Grade cutoffs aren't great because he doesn't have tenure, but study what he tells you! He always responds to webCT, so that's pretty helpful. He is hot.
One of the best professors at UCSD. His lectures facilitates note-taking (a lot too) and really clears up what you're going to do in the lab. He doesn't curve because the averages on the exams are usually C+/B-, but they're not so bad. Just study a lot and memorize everything in lecture and in the lab manual.
Easily the best lecturer I've had in 4 years at UCSD. He could explain this stuff to a monkey. Tests are fair, easiest lab I've taken, experiments can be fun (a couple are a bit dull). you MUST take Coleman
Coleman is great!! This class was pretty interesting and laidback. You must go to lectures. The exams are lecture based. The exams are not bad at all, just study everything in lecture! All the graphs, charts, information he tells you about the experiments. Also every point counts in this class so do well on the quizzes and notebook checks.
Dr. Coleman is awesome! He's a super clear and organized lecturer. Also, he's always in lab helping you out. His exams aren't difficult but they are pretty thorough. Study and you'll do really well, no tricks. Most of the labs are pretty interesting. I really enjoyed this class and this professor.
Professor Coleman is a solid lecturer who is very approachable in office hours. The good: easier midterms, clear lectures, homework points to boost your grade. The bad: no curve(he doesn't have tenure), he doesn't cover as much material as other professors, and you must attend lecture as the book is not very helpful. Overall, recommend.
Prof Coleman is so nice and always in a good mood! The curve seems alright but it's hard to tell since I don't know my grade on the final. Lectures are a must. Tests are doable because he realizes (unlike most profs) that testing on a bunch of memorization is useless and it's better that students learn concepts that they'll remember after the class
Took him for BIBC 103 and now BIBC 102. He's super clear and easier than other professors. Plus, his tests are very straightforward and clear, and the curve is decent. I would recommend him because you learn a LOT in his class. One of my favourite biology professors.
No curve at all for either metabolic or biochem techniques... not sure what other ppl are talking about. His tests are fair, however and only tests on what was said in class. He is very likable and nice. For the lab: 2 lab reports and 2 MTs along with a couple quizzes and notebook checks. He is a really clear lecturer--definitely reccommended
He gives a decent curve. Lectures are pretty straight forward. A lot of stuff in class to remember but not bad compared to the other UD bio classes I've taken. Do your problem sets! They're free points.
A good professor overall. Coleman is approachable in his OHs and going to them will help you a lot. He doesn't curve so you need to keep up with everything. However, even if you do well in this class, don't expect that he will write you a LOR. He will say that he's busy. My older friends who asked him LORs got his "too busy".
He really cares about his students..is a very straightforward with lectures. lectures can be boring at times. his exams can be tricky at times, especially the final in which he makes half thinking-based and other half basic stuff. doesnt curve the class, may lower points depending on the cutoff situation. Overall, a GREAT professor! take him!
Seems like a decent class all the way up to the final. That's when you find out that you were supposed to intertwine all that straightforward stuff he was teaching somehow on your own. Thought I had a guaranteed A. Ended up with a C+. Any friend that recs this guy is not a friend.
Biochem Lab was very enjoyable although that mostly depends on your TA. Professor's lectures are clear and if you pay attention to all the details of lecture, the lab manual and understand every procedure behind experiments, the midterms will be super easy. There isn't a ridiculous amount of material to cover and tests are not cumulative.
goes through everything thoroughly, and only tests on lecture material, so you dont need the book but you MUST go to lecture. 4 hw assignments, 1 midterm, 1 final. you really basically need to memorize everything from lecture. unfortunately, no curve, which makes getting an A nearly impossible. B is doable. still recommended
Great professor who cares about students' learning. Don't expect to simply memorize glycolysis, crebs and the ETC to get an A in the class. Know the big picture concepts (ask: why is this pathway important?) attend lecture, do the hw and you'll find biochem isn't that bad.
kinda hard to understand his lectures, but fun to look at.
Good professor. Lectures very useful. He tells you what you need to focus on for the exam. No practice exams, but homework problems are a good way to study. There is homework that is due, but very easy to finish on time. Fairly easy class, but will require study time.
I love Dr. Coleman! He's AMAZING! I learned so much and was able to get an A (even w/ no curve). If you really work for it and pay attention, it's totally possible. He gives E.Credit opportunities and actually cares about teaching. Very humble, kind guy. He treats his students w/ respect, very approachable. The best class I've ever taken. A must!
Great professor! He's super friendly and a really good lecturer. I thought this class was going to be really hard and unpleasant but it wasn't that bad at all. I would definitely recommend him.
Awesome professor! Very approachable and nice :) He's very clear in lecture about what you need to know. Exams were relatively easy if you go to all the classes. Never used the textbook. My favorite class ever!
I was dreading this class but Coleman made it enjoyable. His clear explanations made it actually interesting for me. He's helpful, there's a lot of material and no curve but definitely possible to get an A. I was 6 points away from an A made me regret not doing the extra credit presentation. He's awesome though!
This course was not as easy as people made it out to be. The midterm was fairly straight forward but really long for class time given. The final on the other hand was really difficult and long even though it was said it would be shorter. Class was barely curved so my grade drastically fell! Def more Bs and Cs then A. Nice guy, but needs to be clear
Love Coleman! He's simply The Best. Lab was a bit boring though and hated writing the time consuming worthless reports and getting points taken off for stupid formatting as if that made a difference in learning anything. Labs are extremely LONG and annoying, but prof is AWESOME. He's really cool and intelligent, def recommend!
Best professor for metabolic. Super clear and goes over everything on the board. No textbook needed. All test material is based off the lectures. He is really nice and he is also really good to look at. Need to work to get an A, but not impossible. Would recommend!
This is an amazing professor no doubt. You have to attend his lectures. Take good notes, but notes aren't good enough. You must also read the text to get a better understanding in order to get a good grade.
Lab is interesting, and you can certainly learn a lot. However, his exams are difficult. Mixture of poorly worded questions and super specific grading. Be prepared to word vomit every little thing you know, because you're not going to get the points otherwise. Everything you write down on the exam will be taken super literal with no room for error.
Dr. Coleman is one of the best professors at UCSD. Very clear in lecture, makes biochemistry easy to understand. No podcasts or notes online so you have to go to lecture but exams are very straight forward. If you go to lecture, pay attention and take good notes you'll have no problem getting a good grade.
I took Dr Coleman's biochem lab last quarter. As with previous reviews, he was an awesome lecturer and patient teacher. Very accessible in lab; he even personally helped us troubleshoot an experiment when it failed to run correctly! Fair exams that stress conceptual understanding (no useless memorizing). One of the best profs in the bio department.
Dr. Coleman is a really great lecturer, and a nice guy in general. It's obvious that he really cares about students learning and isn't the type of professor who throws a ton of curveball questions. Pretty much everything on the exams is straight from lecture. My only complaint is that I wish he had more office hours.
Very nice professor but class is poorly structured. Vague lab report instructions with very specificpicky grading. Exams are easy and representative of class lecture, but his wordings are weird sometimes and lead you in the wrong direction. Overall, the professor is very friendly but the class is not worth the time or the money.
Really awesome professor. His lectures were very clear and the problem sets he made were very helpful bc they were very similiar to the tests. The class is hard in general bc their is a lot to memorize, but you can easily get a B or A if you study a lot.
Coleman is a really chill guy and is in no way out to get his students or fail them. His midterm was very fair as was the final. Seriously, go to lecture each time, take notes and you will do well on the exams and quizzes. All his tests were very reasonable with some problems showing up directly from the problem sets. Really sweet, clear and chill
Prof C is wonderful! His lectures are super clear, and the class material is straightforward. It is really easy to understand the concepts with his organized lectures, and it is easy to tell he loves to teach. He only has chalk lectures though, so attend class! Grading is ultimately up to the TAs - you have 3 reports, 4 quizzes, and 2 exams.
Was not a great lecture as everyone hyped him up to be. The midterm was unbelievably difficult that did not coordinate with his lectures at all. I've been to every lecture and even made use of his office hours. I'd personally stay away from him at all costs
this man deserves a hot pepper! makes it easy to understand and take notes. study all your notes hard and you will do well.
Loved this class! Dr. Coleman frequently checks to make sure students don't have any unanswered questions, and obviously cares about his students learning the material and doing well in the course. DO THE PROBLEM SETS! A lot of test questions mirror the ones from problem sets.
Professor Coleman is an outstanding lecturer. He makes it very easy to take notes and is very clear in his explanations of the course material. He doesn't podcast, so you have to attend class to get the notes. His exams are very representative of the course material and the problem sets he gives out. Easy A if you put in the work.
Dr. Coleman is one of the best professors at UCSD. Caring, prepared, detailed... he is a great lecturer with an eye for how students learn, he is a great grader and provides clear expectations for his lab reports. His midterm and final can be challenging, but only if you haven't taken notes during lecture and have relied on your partner during lab.
Dr. Coleman gives great lectures. He's very clear about what will be on the tests and the practice problems are really representative. Tests are not hard. You do need to go to lecture as he writes everything on the chalkboard and doesn't podcast. He's a nice guy who you can tell is excited about the material, he's very bouncy.
Dr. Coleman is one of the best professors I've had in my college experience (the other 2 being professors from my cc). He is really passionate about what he teaches and that makes the biggest difference. Lectures were never dull and it was easy to follow along since he writes everything you need to know on the board. I strongly recommend this prof!
Coleman is one of the best biochem professors I have had. He is so knowledgable about the topic and can clearly explain everything. Biochem is a hard class, so be prepared to study a lot, but totally managable if you keep on top of studying. 2 midterms and a final. Hard but so worth, and he makes the class so interesting!
The class was personally very difficult for me to follow since he only wrote on the board and didn't post slides or anything. The beginning of the class started very basic and slow, and then a just few days before the midterm he would introduce very complex topics to remember. Overall a nice guy but the class style just didn't work for me that well
The material is actually really cool, but having to memorize the details of metabolic charts was insanely boring and ultimately not useful. He's upfront about his strategy, but the class has no lasting impact as you forget most everything a couple weeks after the final.
I personally found this class to be very interesting however the level of detail he says he expects us to know for the exams is a bit more simplistic than whats on the actual exam. The only thing I can say is that you need to work very hard to get good grades the first two midterms because the final exam is a pain, so dont wait . No podcast :(
A great professor, even if it was a challenging class. You have to put the hours in to memorize and understand the different pathways and structures. His class format is very lecture heavy, where note taking is a must since he writes everything on the board. I liked that, because it forced me to take notes. All his exams are reflective of lectures.
His tests are graded really harshly and to be honest as a person, I feel like he cares more about making his class difficult so only a few do well instead of actually caring that everyone learns. Hes just one of those professors that thinks the harder he makes his class, the more fair it is.
The only students who like him are the ones that think suffering through a class for an A is what makes it worth it. I dont recommend him for anyone who isnt trying to prove anything. Hes a very typical UCSD prof, doesnt care about the individuals. Do yourself a favor and take a more generous professor.
Professor Coleman is super caring! His lectures arent podcasted so you definitely have to attend and theyre a bit boring. The grade was mostly based off on one midterm and the final. Only about half of the discussions were mandatory. Do good on the first exam/final and youll get an A!
Doctor Coleman cares a lot about his students though many may miss this if they don't engage with him personally. Grading felt like shedding full letter grades for minor mistakes which crippled morale but in the end my grade was probably about right.
Professor was really clear during lecture. I always get a high 90% just by doing the problem sets and listening to lecture. His lab reports may seem tricky, so its important to ask feedback from the TA and him. Hes pretty approachable and friendly! The class itself could be improved, sometimes my lab group feels lost by the instructions.
For a professor that is involved in education research, he was pretty unaccommodating in terms of student learning style and teaching in the online format. He never posted the lecture slides or solutions to problem sets. In addition, he made no meaningful connection to the material to help remember and the class felt like a memorization/info dump.
Took him for both BIBC 102/103 and his classes do require a lot of dedication to understanding the material. Highly recommend taking his class if you're willing to put in the effort! He's super nice and willing to help you through questions if you go to OH. His grading is super strict though with little room for partial credit ):
He's a nice guy, but this class is ridiculous for the amount of time it takes. There are two long research assignments, tests, and quizzes. On top of this, there is a lab notebook homework that one has to keep up with. The average grade for the first test was a D, so beware, this guy is extremely difficult.
I loved the way professor Coleman taught this class. He would take baby steps with the concepts learned in class, which was really helpful considering that most lab classes do not teach you why you do certain steps. Aside from his clear method of teaching, Coleman holds regular office hours where he explains practice problems. He really cares!
Tests are based on lectures no lecture slides. AWFUL LECTURER. If he spent the time her runs back and forth drawing things on the board as he did putting information concisely and cohesively he would be great. Does not ask clear questions. Squirrel brained to say the least. Take someone else.
Lecture attendance was mandatory, so if you had an emergency, too bad! Lectures were random and not structured, so they were sometimes hard to follow, and HUGE emphasis on memorization of structures. I didn't do the readings, so I can't say if they were helpful or not, but make sure to know and be able to draw every single process by heart!!
Doesn't curve and has no recorded podcasts. Everything is drawn out manically and there's no clear explanation of anything regarding the pathways. Even his TAs were confused during discussions because his lectures were so inconsistent. Pure, brute memorization of all chemical molecule structures, arrows, and names for every enzyme talked about.
took him for BIBC 102 and BIBC 103. 103 is definitely easier as that he podcasts and made the lab notebook digital. Towards the end of the class labs are easy since there are no big assignments based on them. First exam for 103 was reasonable unlike BIBC 102 being hard. 103 lectures are better structured than 102 for some reason too.
Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this class. teaching wise you watch podcasts on your own, and answer clicker questions during lecture time regarding the material. The exams I found them to be fairly easy and represent lecture material but memorization intensive and NOT impossible. He lets you know ahead of time whats required to know. PBS =study aid
Very nice man, but class is so dense and expects to know every detail about everything exams 375 points no curve for anything at all even with C averages. Smart and nice man but lectures are mediocre.
The class is very lecture-heavy, with a strong emphasis on memorizing chemical structures and pathways. Although challenging, the professor's clear explanations and use of unstuck ai for study prep helped me succeed. Overall, a rewarding experience if you're willing to put in the work.
The class was flipped so lectures were videos and designated lecture times were learning sessions where he went over the lecture content and did practice problems. I really liked this format, made it so that you were constantly reviewing the content and nothing was too new. Exams were fair, but metabolic is always hard and memorization based.
Really depends on the TA. Lectures are recorded + online and are helpful to understanding why you do the lab stuff. Exams are on the harder side but not super unfair. Coleman is helpful and will look over your entire lab report before submission to give you tips.
Dr Coleman was good but his midterm/final was hard. Some quizzes weren't bad but some had very confusing wording. There were only two lab reports for this class and the experiments weren't too bad at all however the grading on the lab reports was a little harsh considering it's supposed to be a class where you are learning to write lab reports
Kind of nit-picky about grading, but as you go through the class grading criteria gets clearer. Exams are like the practice problems and the lab textbook is useful for the exams as well. As long as you put effort into the lab notebook and do as required its easy points. Definitely go see TA for the reports to get help if you need it. Overall easy!
