great teacher
Dinin has good ideas and good intentions, I really do believe. The problem is that he lacks the realization that good ideas in theory do not always work in practice. Some of the things that are meant to be productive turn to be almost entirely counterproductive. Good guy at heart. Can be funny. The class is just kind of a bad idea.
He gives out busy work for homework assignments and then grades them harshly for no reason. Failure tasks are fun at first but then become a burden and unwanted. Grading structure is incredibly flawed and he is a very stubborn professor in the sense that he is not willing to help at all in terms of grades. Should be an easy A, however it is not.
Really different class, but in a good way. Spells out things in tons of detail in his syllabus. Almost too much detail. Then people get annoyed at the end of the semester when he does exactly what he says he's going to do. I only mention it because it's fun to watch, so long as you're not one of the ones complaining like some of the reviews here.
Really unusual professor. His expectation is that you can't do what he's asking you to do, which can be frustrating. But, by the end of the semester, you start to understand why class is structured like it is, and you learn to think more critically about your own actions both inside the class and in all your other classes.
Dinin teaches a unique course and it is interesting yet he also lacks some structure in that we do many things in the class that have no purpose and if someone asks about the reasoning, he'll tend to make something up. Also, he has a weird philosophy around targeting certain students and having them "learn to fail" through a bad grade.
I took Professor Dinin's Learning to Fail class and it completely changed the way I approach everything. It's definitely a must-take class for any student thinking about being an entrepreneur.
Dr. D's class changed the way I approach basically everything. I love that he never pretends to have all the answers. He doesn't lecture at students but is more about collaborating with them.
Definitely one of the best professors on campus. He's actually spent time in the real world building businesses and doing the work he's teaching about, which is a refreshing change of pace.
Probably one of the most unique classes and professors I've ever had. I wish he gave a bit more feedback on the assignments I turn in. Sometimes it seemed like he wasn't reading everything we submitted. But the classes themselves were awesome.
I took Dinin's social media marketing class because I thought a class about social media would be cool. It definitely was cool, but not at all how I would expect. Dinin really seems to understand social media in a way I'd never thought of before. It made me much more aware of how people and companies use social media to manipulate others.
Very interesting course material that is covered in a hands on, practical manner. Definitely expect to have some amount of work before every class, but the assignments are usually semi-quick and useful. Overall, glad I took the course and Dinin did a great job of teaching it as well.
Professor Dinin is the man. While many of his classes are a bit quirky and weird, which can be fun or not depending on the type of person/student you are, his social media marketing class is very lecture heavy. His lectures are really interesting and it's a fun, contemporary topic worth learning. Do the work (it's not too tough) and you'll do well.
Prof. Dinin's social marketing class was extremely valuable. You learn a lot about social media in ways you've never thought about it. His sarcasm/sense of humor is unique and takes some getting used to, but he's one of the better professors I've had at Duke. He wants you to get good grades and learn, but be ready to participate in class.
If you are by any means interested in social marketing- this is the class to take. Honestly, Dinin is just a really genuine and nice teacher.
I took Dinin's class this semester and absolutely loved it. I thought it was so interesting and really different from many of the other classes I have taken at Duke. It made me so much more aware of how I can use social media for good and for bad and how to continue reading the news with lots of caution. Overall great class and work wasn't too hard
He was very enthusiastic and cared about this class!
I took professor Dinin's Social Media Marketing class and was am leaving the course a lot more informed about the role of social media in influencing consumer decisions and different techniques to having a successful social media account. Dinin was incredibly nice and approachable outside of class, and made class an enjoyable experience to come to
Taking Dr. Dinin's class has changed how I view social media and content in general. Without this class, I would've fallen victim to conventional thought about how and why certain things are online. Highly recommend taking this class before you graduate. It's one class that actually makes you think and is fun. Do the work and you will be fine.
The class was good overall, but compared to what people told me beforehand, there were many more assignments and the grading scale was difficult since so many assignments were graded out of so few points. Dinin is funny, but I don't think you want to get on his bad side.
Social Marketing for Entrepreneurs is a really interesting class that I recommend to anyone who may want to build an online presence for themselves one day. Dinin is really engaging and cares a lot about the progress of his students.
I took Dinin's Social Media Marketing class and it was probably my favorite class of the semester. The projects are fun and the work load isn't too heavy. The reading are very useful and he brings in really cool guest speakers. Dinin makes the class super interesting and I am so glad I took this course.
Taking the class and very much enjoyed the semester. The topics were interesting and the prof was really cool.
I enjoyed the course. A lot of work (seemingly feeling like busy work), but in the end it makes sense why you do it all. I'll never look at social media the same. Great class, funny professor. Grading doesn't seem too tough, but the Instagram project is a pain!
Dr. Dinin is great. He's the main reason why the class was interesting. He really cares about student feedback and tries to teach the class skills without making it incredibly boring. High learning, low work!
The professor was great. He focuses on learning rather than grades and makes a fun, open class environment.
I love this class. I really learned stuff that I felt like could be applied to a real career in the future. You truly learn what it is line to run the social media account of someone else. I would def take this class or any class with him again.
Dr. Dinin is a funny and very smart guy. He approaches classes with an open mind set, and he is always looking to learn from his students. This is the second class that I've taken with Dr. Dinin, and I can confidently say i would take a third. What you put into Dr. Dinin's classes are what you get out, but he gives you the frame to learn a lot.
Dr. Dinin is AMAZING!!!! Definitely take his class (whether it's 250 or anything else). He cares so much about the success of his students and prioritizes learning over anything else. He is a fair and reasonable grader. If you put in effort, you will definitely be rewarded. By far my favorite professor at Duke.
It was a very fun class that allowed you to get hands-on experience with social media and brand creation. Dr. Dinin was very enthusiastic and open to feedback. Take a class with him!
Casual, funny professor who really just wants students to be engaged and excited about the material. Forward-thinking and innovative, his class was a great experience!
TAKE THIS CLASS!! I have never learned more from a class in my life. This class has solidified my passion in marketing and that was all because of Dinin. He is super chill, funny, a great mentor, doesnt care about class structure and if you show you are trying and care about your work, you will get an A. Cant say enough good things about it.
Cool class w/ cool professor. Laid back, but fun and interesting work.
Dr. Dinin clearly prepares all of his classes and really cares about his students and their experiences in his classes. His approach is somewhat unconventional and not very grade-focused. He is definitely approachable and creates a wholesome, light-hearted, friendly environment in his classroom.
Professor Dinin is such a kind, down to earth guy. Class was mostly group project based so beware if you hate that. This was his first time teaching this version of the class, so it was pretty disorganized and experimental, but overall it was fun. Not sure I learned A TON of new information, but definitely got hands-on experience.
Really chill and accomplished dude. The class is easy but you def learn a ton. This particular class is all hands-on learning with groups, which can be fun.
Building Global Audiences is a fantastic course that takes a hands-on, unorthodox approach to learning the fundamentals of social media and engagement. Would definitely recommend to anybody who is interested in this space! Dr. Dinin was really great at leading us through challenging objectives.
Dinin is a great guy who is witty/funny and knowledgable about the topics that he teaches. He knows how to make a class engaging and I never felt bored/zoned out. Not a ton of work but assignments here and there and group work that is enjoyable. Definitely would take this class again as it provides great social media experience
Professor Dinin really just doesn't care about you memorizing abstract facts that you aren't going to use. He cares about enabling you to succeed by applying the underlying principles of entrepreneurship, marketing, and social media. If you want to up your own Insta game, or just want an easy class about social marketing, this is it.
Easy and fun class! I surprisingly learned a lot about social media marketing. Low workload so highly recommend to take this if you are overloading.
Great professor, had him for two courses now, really dives into topics and ideas that are modern, interesting, and will actually help you in the real world
His teaching style is quite different from the traditional college professor. He makes you think about issues rather than throwing answers at you. Highly recommend taking a class with him!
It was a good class. Lots of cool stuff with social media and all of it was engaging and served a purpose. I loved it. This class is his favorite and it shows in the effort he puts in.
Social Media Marketing is one of the best classes I've taken at Duke. You spend the entire semester diving into Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, etc. and analyzing how different influencers/brands/etc. find success. Aaron provides a lot of insight and is also just a hilarious and chill dude. Very comfortable and fun classroom environment.
Professor Dinin is a true professor for the people. He really knows how our generation works and how to format his classes/projects to stuff that will keep our interest but won't be boring. I loved everything about this class, and from what I have heard his amazingness applies to his other classes as well.
Social Media Marketing is a super chill class & very useful if you plan on going into marketing/brand management/sales/or even startups. It is interesting and I really enjoyed how interactive the class was, particularly the final project of making an insta that needs 1K followers and 10% engagement on posts. Some boring reading is assigned though.
This class really surpassed my expectations-- Mr. Dinin always finds a way to twist lectures and really make us think. He really changed the way that I view social media and made me want to pursue it further.
Professor Dinin is so great and clearly knows his subject. Social media marketing is so multifaceted, and he does a great job showing students how. Classwork was interesting but not too challenging. You will have to read and write responses. Overall highly recommend.
This class was very inciteful. You really learn how social media works behind the scenes. This professor really tries to provide real world information. You will learn things you did not expect to learn (in a great way).
One of the best professors and classes I've had at Duke. Dinin takes the concepts we learn in class and applies them to real world opportunities, as in jobs/potential internships. Do yourself a favor and take this class. It's fun and you learn a ton.
The outline for the class was super clear. My one issue wit the class was that most class time was not spent delving into the reading material, or discussing the merits of what we were learning. However, I do think I learned a fair amount by actually engaging in the practice of social media. The final assignment is unique but FRUSTRATING.
Manageable amount of work. Be prepared to make presentations. It is an engaging and a fun class. Professor is funny and chill. Mostly you deal with real life case studies / examples and thus topics are applicable to real word. Really helpful to understand the dynamics behind today's social media and marketing.
We got to engage with social media platforms a lot which provided a lot of value to the course. Passionate about teaching this course. Provides feedback on everything, so you know exactly what to do to get a better grade.
funny, relatable professor who is extremely honest clear grading rubric means that there is little room for leeway (even the format for class discussion questions) takes class feedback into account and addresses concerns cool content that provides a different kind of learning the class may seem easy but A's aren't guaranteed
one of the most caring professors ever. i was really struggling in the class and i thought he was going to fail me. instead, he called me to his office he spent the entire time trying to help me get myself back on track. if all professors cared half as much as Dr. Dinin, college would be way better.
Thoughtful, caring and funny. Our class was mostly group work. He helped guide us, but wasn't overbearing. Treated us like adults, allowed us to make our own decisions and set our own goals, which was a unique experience for a college class.
Went to his office hours thinking he was going to scold me because of some missed assignments, but ended up having the best conversation I've ever had with a professor. He gave all sorts of helpful advice not just about his class, but also about school and career advice. If you take his class, make sure to find some time to talk to him 1-on-1.
Super laid back and caring professor. Not a typical Duke class.
Great class. Trust the process, you'll get a good grade in the end. Just do your stuff. Can be pretty fun and nice break from brutal Duke classes
Professor Dinin is awesome, I've had him for two classes so far and even as a non I&E student I feel like these were some of the most applicable classes that I've taken at Duke.
very laid back and engages with students
Thoughtful and caring professor. Will make you question your use of social media, but you'll learn more than you expect - through the lens of social media, you'll actually gain knowledge about consumer behavior, building a brand, etc. that can be applied to many more practical situations
Interesting class that works a ton with social media platforms. No overwhelmingly large assignments, but you do have to consistently participate and keep up with regular small assignments.
Social Marketing is a really fun class to add into your schedule. The assignments and book readings are enjoyable to do and never feel like actual work. Professor Dinin has interesting perspectives and leads a great class on a relevant topic. He can come off a little patronizing at times, but overall really enjoyed.
Great class. Professor Dinin puts in lots of effort to make his students understand the core concepts of social marketing. He's very open to questions/comments and an overall understanding person. The final project is fun and you learn a ton. Application/Example based class
Heavy on discussion in class about social media use, really makes you question some of the beliefs you hold about social media. Interesting in-class activities and homework where we can apply concepts we learn in class.
This was my favorite class that I have taken at Duke - with my now favorite professor that I have had at Duke. Sincerely amazing class - super interesting learning experience about something that was relevant to our lives. The work did not feel like homework but rather something that was actually worth learning. Would HIGHLY recommend.
The final Instagram experiment is super fun and enjoyable. It seems very challenging at first, but most people put a good amount of work in and do really well. Overall a relatively chill class with interesting reading and discussions. You learn more about social media broadly than tactical strategies.
Prof Dinin really makes you think. We critically thought about the social media around us and how they fit into the context in our lives and the world around us. Readings provided really make you think and we have excellent class discussion. You have to make an instagram from scratch and get 1k followers in 2 months, which you MUST start early on.
One of the best classes I have taken at Duke. Very caring and has a great way of teaching the material of the class through many different kinds of assignments. Be prepared to have a decent amount of work, but all fun and really interesting to do. Overall, highly recommend taking the class!!
Great Learning environment
Really engaging professor. Makes you excited to show up every day. And I felt like I learned a ton.
Best professor I've had at Duke and I think that shows in the class. When I stop and think about, there were a lot of assignments, but I actually enjoyed doing them, so it never really seemed like work. Make sure you stop by Dinin's office hours, too. He's a very caring professor and gives all sorts of good advice.
Wanted to give Professor Dinin a shoutout here because he's the only professor I've had who's willing to take a risk in his class. He attempted something experimental for the I&E Capstone. I'm not sure it went exactly how he planned, but he used our feedback to continue improving throughout the semester, and I ultimately learned a ton.
Learning to Fail is a class like no other, and Dr. Dinin is a professor like no other. The class won't seem "hard" in a normal sense, but it's going to challenge you in a way you've never been challenged before in a classroom. Whatever you do, figure out how to take a class with Dr. Dinin. You'll be glad you did.
Not surprised Dr. Dinin has lots of good reviews on here. Good as advertised.
One of the best professors/classes I've taken at Duke. Wish more classes were like his. The homework never felt like homework because I actually wanted to do it.
My third class with Dr. Dinin, and I love how he's never afraid to try something new.
Take a class with Dinin if you have the opportunity. Trust me. You'll be sitting in other classes, like I am right now, and wishing you were back in his class.
Great professor. I took IE253 Social Marketing with him. Lots of reading. Lots of small mini assignments. If you can do them all (which dont take very long) you are going to be fine. Really fun class. Does not teach you how to become an influencer but rather how to become a better marketer and consumer of media.
Definitely recommend taking this course if you get the chance. The assignments were interesting and enjoyed the final social media experiment.
This class is an unexpectedly quirky romp through the world of social media. Dr. Dinin occasionally comes across as narcissistic (he often uses his own social media accounts and exploits as examples), but while he's not humble, he's certainly entertaining and informed. Consistent assignments but all decently easy. Be prepared to get thoughtful!
As someone who is social media averse, I really enjoyed learning more about it in his class. My favorite part of the class were the connections of historic texts to modern media. Although there are plenty of short homework assignments, they are interesting. Highly recommend taking this course :)
You should honestly take a class with Professor Dinin. He is a dope professor that truly cares about what his students learn and finds great content to talk about. You'll get an A if you put in the effort. Not a ton of work. You will learn a ton!
I really enjoyed this class! It was very interesting and unique subject material.
def worth taking a class with him at some point during your duke career
Great professor. Super interesting material. Loved the class overall would definitely recommend.
Professor Dinin's class was phenomenal. His lectures were interesting, relevant, and he really opened my eyes to the social media world. He never assigns too much work, and there are no tests/quizzes. Classes are seminar style/cool guest speakers.
Really entertaining prof. Lots of small assignments, but structures it in a way that makes them easy to earn a good grade on while still learning lots. Really pulls back the curtain on social media and how it works. Can't look at the internet the same way, that's for sure.
fascinating + useful
Most interesting and best class I've had at Duke. Gave me a completely different perspective on social media. Dr. Dinin makes you think about things in ways you wouldn't normally and he's got the background and experience that helps him know what he's talking about.
Class focuses on influencer marketing (not brands), super interesting but only if you want to go into social media, Dr. Dinin is fantastic -- funny, entertaining, accommodating
This class is really engaging and interesting to learn about social media marketing. The workload is not bad and there are a lot of speakers/group projects. Grading criteria is clear from the beginning Professor Dinin is an amazing prof! Would def recommend this class
Professor Dinin is a great professor and loves to talk/engage with his students. Do the readings and participate in class and you will do fine.
Probably one of the most useful classes at Duke. I came away every class with a new outlook on social media, and also learned about the power of building your personal brand for anyone. Be wary that group projects really depend on your group, so be sure to communicate. Be prepared to participate!
Best class I've taken at Duke, it was an amazing class that really made me think about social media's place within our lives and how we can create content that stands out. Professor Dinin's lectures always felt important and engaging. This is also very much so an ENGLISH class, we engaged with literature and how it pertains to social media.
This class is an awesome way to engage with social media and learn more about it. Dinin is growing his own platform, and he brings his input from his experience into the class. Would take this class again in a heartbeat.
Hands down best class I've had at Duke. Not a hard class at all, but I think that's because a lot of the assignments don't feel like work because you're literally doing things like looking at TikTok, which I'd probably be doing anyway. Some of the readings can be a bit tedious, but there aren't tests on them or anything, so you can skim.
I wish more professors taught classes as practical and useful to life beyond college as Dinin. Plus he actually understands what skills students will need when they graduate, as opposed to most of the other classes I've taken. Easily the best professor and class at Duke. No question.
Don't take this class. You learn nothing useful and it's all busy work that is a total waste of time. Constantly feels like he wants us to do something wrong so he can make a Tiktok about it. Attendance is mandatory but the lectures are completely pointless, especially when he spends 15 minutes telling us about the importance of coming to class
It's literally a class where the homework is using TikTok. Somehow by doing that Prof. Dinin gets you thinking about TikTok in a way that's totally different than how you used it before. You'll actually start to hate social media by the end of the semester, but in a good way. You'll recognize how manipulative it all is, which is creepy.
Attendance is mandatory (it affects your grade if you don't go), and there are 2-3 really easy assignments each week. Even though it's easy, I wouldn't recommend the class. He's passionate and a great guy, but the content is dated and oversimplified. Our final project is to get 2000 followers on TikTok, which we've learned to hate.
A gem of a professor. So thoughtful. So caring. I was dealing with a big personal issue this semester, and he reached out multiple times just to check on me and make sure I'm doing OK.
Dinin is the man! He always wants to help, he will always crack a joke and make the class entertaining. Take his class if you like the subject he is teaching, you will benefit from it!
Aaron is who you want if you're looking for that GPA boost or that chill class in a schedule full of tougher classes. You're bound to get an A as long as you turn things in for his class.
Was deceived by the RMP views when signing up for Dinin's class and really regret it. Professor Dinin is a complete fraud and teaches us absolutely nothing about social marketing in class. The assignments had zero value and all of class was spent discussing these 0-value assignments. He knows nothing about social marketing either which is crazyy
Dinin is probably the most chill professor I've ever had. But he's able to do that while being really passionate about the subject. Some of his jokes are a little lame, but he bends over backward to help you succeed, and he treats you like an adult rather than a kid, which is really nice for a change.
He is a poor professor who advocates for communication but does not actually practice what he preaches. He expects perfection from his students and is the least understanding professor at Duke.
I took learning to fail around a year ago. He expected us to write reflections without telling us what he wanted. I did well until he decided to give me a C on 1 of the 2 final reflections because I talked about one element in the class in one of the reflections but not the other. I was a first-semester freshman and it felt like such a power trip.
Lots of little assignments, but an easy and really interesting class. Likes to do group projects which can be a little problematic if you get bad people in your group, but if you talk with him about the problems you're having in your group, Dinin is really good about helping you out. One of the easiest professors to talk to.
Felt like posting to say he's one of the better professors at Duke. I was thinking of transferring, and his advice was the best. Dinin helped me realize I wasn't happy because I was just following what everyone else was doing and taking the wrong classes. Definitely schedule office hours with him. Worth talking to outside of class.
Dinin is extremely knowledgeable in the world of social media, and will try to give you insights into how to be a "critical reader of social media." The class is graded on case studies, homework (completion grade), and social media experiment which are all hands on, engaging, and relatively easy assignments. Would recommend.
Great guy. Every class was like a TedTalk. I loved coming into class in the morning and finding out what the topic of that day was going to be. Super valuable info regardless of whether you want to work in Social Media or not.
Really engaging professor. Love that he seems to care so much about trying to understand his students and live in their world instead of just making us do everything his old-fashioned way like a lot of other professors. Makes TikToks in class, lets us have phones and computers, and really seems to care a lot. We need more professors like Dinin.
Loved this class!
I personally did not love this class. Dinin is a very cool guy but he was slightly arrogant. Also, 253 is much more social media based than I expected, so don't take this if you aren't super into posting on TikTok. However, I did learn a lot and it was a very interesting experience.
Just had to comment on someone else's review that was surprised the class had a lot of social media in it. It's called "social marketing". What did he expect? LOL. Anyway, Dinin is basically the best professor at Duke. A little cringe, but you can tell it comes from a good place. Try to flunch him if you can. Might take him a while to respond.
Dinin is an engaging professor who cares about connecting with students. His class is discussion-based and hands-on, with helpful assignments. I found unstuck study great for prepping case studies. Worth taking if you're interested in social media.
Fake and overly enthusiastic. Very inauthentic - his TikToks and Reels are very cringe and give Duke a bad reputation.
Meh. He was ok. It was a super easy class. But he does seem more interested in clocks for his tic-tok.
Total waste of your time. He talks about nothing useful, and cares more about making content for his TikTok. Yes, he uses us to gain personal wealth. Tests are easy, basically a joke. If I can't call him a scam, he is a con artist, a fake. Pretends to care about students. Don't take unless you want an easy A time waster class.
If you want an easy A and don't want to do anything take the class. If you want to learn about social media marketing take the class. If you don't apply to the first two don't bother wasting your time. Really cool if you're looking to begin a social media career or have a free A basically, otherwise, spend your money and time elsewhere.
Definitely not one of those professors who's going to make your life miserable if you don't do the homework. That's good and bad. It means you get out of it what you put in. If you're interested in social media, take Dinin's class. If you aren't, don't take it. That simple. It's amazing to have a prof with legit experience in what he's teaching.
What you see online isn't what you get in class. I mean that in a good way. He looks like he's really self-centered online, but when you take the class you realize it's because he studies social media and understands how to post so his accounts grow. He's super-caring in person and def loves his students. Wish more professors were like him.
Sometimes boring, but a very easy class. Little to no homework and class consists of making videos and discussions with others. Learned a lot about marketing and social media, and he gave us fun challenges. Overall good and would take again.
The TikTok professor!!!!! Yeah he's sometimes a little cringe, but you learn to live with it. At least he's trying to reach students on their level which is more than I can say for most professors.
Duke in SV is great. Professor Dinin can be a bit overbearing with his videoing and forcing TikTok upon the class, but his lectures are overall engaging and fun. I highly recommend this course.
Very chill professor, you will be bored
Class is an easy A, but don't expect to really learn a whole lot about social media. All his assignments are written by AI, and he doesn't grade the weekly reflections; the TAs do. Hard to get into contact with outside of class.
