Dr. Funk's lectures are as enjoyable as a four hour general chemistry lecture can hope to be thanks to his humorous, if sometimes disorganized style. Furthermore, he is both very open to questions and eager to help those who need it. However, he is not the best at posting grades or returning tests, so feedback leaves a great deal to be desired.
He will go over problems step by step and allows for questions during lecture, which is really helpful.
Dr. Funk is easy going and likes to make jokes during class, particularly about the state of West Virginia. He listens to students and takes their comments into consideration. Overall, I enjoyed him and appreciated his take on his students and their experience in the classroom.
Dr. Funk is super fun. I learned a lot being in his class. Go to lecture, its important because he will go through examples more thoroughly than the textbook. Textbook is a huge must!!! Great Teacher Overall.
Very personable professor and is great at answering questions. Very fair grader and wants students to succeed. Studying the chapters before class is super helpful to get the most out of lectures.
Dr. Funk is a nice guy. He tries to answer all questions and cares about whether the class is following along with what he is saying. He is very clear about what he will test students on and adds extra credit opportunities fairly frequently.
This professor is extremely friendly. He is very intent on answering all student questions, though he did change his email a few times. His study guides are simple, if you study you shouldn't have a problem with this course. No homework, checked for attendance initially. Homework was to study exactly what was taught, solid lesson!
Good instructor, willing to answer all questions. Pretty straight forward about what your expected to know.
I liked that Dr. Funk made Chemistry straight forward. It really helped with understanding this part of chemistry. Now all I need is for him to teach Organic Chem.
Good lectures. One of the teachers I would take again.
Nice guy who wants everyone to pass.
Dr Funk is an exceptional motivator, inspirer and an empathetic leader. He takes his time to make sure that everyone is learning, and creates a safe and fun environment. I would recommend him to everyone.
Great professor, who wants everyone to learn and pass the class
a lecture class with the benefits of a discussion class
Great professor
This is a tough class. Be prepared to read the book thoroughly and seek out a lot of support and resources outside of the class.
Good chem teacher for Chem XL 14 A. Recommend you take him.
Dr. funk was a positive and relaxed lecture. He was eager to answer questions and seemed excited to be there which is sometimes a hard find in classes. His test were very straightforward. Basically if you understand the examples in the book and spend time with the calculations, you should get an A.
Dr Funk, was a breath of fresh air after withdrawing from this course last semester! He is very thorough and lets you know what to expect. He tends to go off small tangents some times, BUT its good because it helps take the edge of when your bombarded with some much information! All in all fun professor .. Would absolutely take him again!
Lecture material directly mirrors the textbook making test preparation easy and straightforward. I would highly recommend having the book to practice additional problems. No other outside resources are necessary to prepare for the exams. Funk is a personable and approachable instructor who cares about his students understanding the material.
He's very enthusiastic when lecturing and tries to engage everyone so you never get bored in class.
I was not looking forward to taking Chemistry; it was my worst subject in high school, and I never seemed able to grasp the material. Dr. Funk was a breath of fresh air. He somehow made chemistry comprehensible and interesting! For that I am forever grateful, and I now feel like I have a good introduction for the rest of the Chem series.
Very good professor! Takes the time to explain the concepts! Made chemistry very interesting for me!
It was a gift and a blessing to take this class with him. He care about teaching and inspiring his students, you can feel it by his energy. He knows how to make his lecture, test examples and textbook example align. That takes true teaching skills. If you go through all 3 sets of content you are guarantee an A.
Great professor! Tests are very fair and straight from his lectures and the book. He wants all of his students succeed, is always open to answering questions in class and makes sure everyone understands the subject/concept. He makes chemistry more fun and understandable. I wish he was teaching 14B, C and D. I would definitely enroll!!
Prof. Funk is an amazing lecturer & person! I started this class with having little chem background, & ended up loving the subject! His tests are VERY straightforward and fair. I wish he taught the rest of the chem series, I would love to have him again! Honestly one of my favorite and best prof's I have ever had! :)
Dr. Funk is an excellent teacher. He is very encouraging and honest, he also provides a very comfortable environment for asking questions. You need to do some work, study and go over all the problems, practice makes perfect. His tests are fair and straight forward if you actually apply yourself you should get an A. If you're lazy you'll earn less.
Engaging, enthusiastic, helpful, makes asking questions easy and the environment fun and conducive. 4 on clarity just because he tends to go straight into examples instead of fleshing out concepts first, so I often found myself gaining a better understanding after reading the textbook. Doesn't hesitate to clear anything up in class though if asked.
If you haven't had chemistry in a while make sure to read the assigned chapter(s) BEFORE coming to class, otherwise you'll be lost during lecture. He lectures out of the book, so all the essential information you need in tests are there for you. Just put in the work and you'll be fine. Dr. Funk is a great professor and keeps class interesting.
Best professor I've ever had in my journey to pursue a second career. He really wants you to learn and most importantly, pass. He makes chemistry enjoyable and makes me see things in different light. You just struck gold if you have him as your chem professor! Always positive, he's never demeaning to students. Tries to answer all your answers. Thx
Very helpful instructor, the lectures were very clearly understood. Exams were not very hard, each question straight to the what is asking (no confusion). You do need to read and practice the problems. Instructor is very funny and easygoing and is a great motivator! Great class, great instructor!
He makes the lecture enjoyable! The practice tests are very good study guide for his exams. I'll definitely take another class with Dr. Funk.
Dr. Funk does a tremendous job of creating a great atmosphere to ask questions. Everything is pretty clear cut about the class. He doesn't throw surprises. If you learn what he tells you you'll need to know, you'll do well. He does a great job of relating to students.
Great teacher, really funny! I looked forward to going to class every SATURDAY. Tests are straight out of the book, just follow lectures and in-class examples, you should be okay.
The tests are fair. The teacher encourages students to ask questions.
I enjoyed Dr. Funk's class. He encourages students to ask questions which makes attending chemistry less intimidating.
He goes out of his way to help you out, you will definitely need to put the time in to do well. Makes a 4 hour lecture on chemistry not dreadful, so that's awesome!
Dr. Aaron Funk is entertaining and genuine. He pretty much teaches directly from the book, but his lectures are greatly boosted by the non-judgmental environment of question-asking he fosters. Funk welcomes any question, big or small, and intentionally leaves time for this after each slide. He also keeps class light & fun with jokes and anecdotes.
Hands down one of the best chemistry professors I've ever had. He will try to simplify a concept as much as possible to make it easy to understand for students. He genuinely cares about his students' successes not only in this class but also in their future careers. Definitely take this course!
He is really sweet and motivational. The class itself does not go very in depth, but reasonably so since it is only a 10 class course. The tests are also pretty easy b/c he puts the equation you need to use right on question it pertains to. Overall it's a pretty straightforward class; if you pay attention and study you'll probably get an A or B.
Lectures are mainly the professor going over book example problems. The class does not really go into depth on core concepts to prepare you for the MCAT, but easy to get an A if you attend class, study the practice exam and do the book problems.
Dr. Funk is great! I prefer lectures to reading, but you could do well in the class if you just read or just go to lecture. His philosophy is great and I wish more profs followed it: he doesn't make you memorise anything he doesn't readily know as a practicing chemist. My only concern is that I'm a bit spoiled for the rest of my med school prep.
Didn't respond to email questions. Wasn't very clear in lecture. Told us book was mandatory, and I never bought it and have been fine. Everything can be found in other books or online. Friendly, encouraging. Really self-centered..
Dr. Funk is a good professor but if you expect to take this course for the easy A, you won't get it unless you put in your own work. It is not a long tedious 3.5 hour lecture course but brief explanation and core examples to learn the material and clarify what you must read and learn on your own; like most university classes. Definitely recommend.
Dr Funk is hands down the best Chemistry professor I've ever had. He brings a very energetic vibe to the class that makes, what is otherwise a monotonous subject, actually somewhat enjoyable. It's incredibly refreshing having a prof that enjoys teaching.
I had a great quarter with professor Funk. This is my first time taking chemistry and he really helped me understand it and enjoy it. It is not an easy A, but you are in college and you have to work for your A. If you put time and work into studying you will do great!
This is the dude to take. Energetic, funny, chill, open to dumb questions & never makes you feel bad for asking them. As my first chemistry course, this class was very tough for me in the beginning and I probably would've dropped if I had any other professor. He has a great teaching approach and philosophy & is very passionate about teaching well.
I enjoyed this course very much. Professor created a welcoming environment. He was very encouraging and overall an effective instructor. I would highly recommend him to my peers.
Prof. Funk is fun and won't let subject matter get boring. The lectures did jump from one thing to another quickly. So if you didn't understand, def. ask. Review the book. I found it easier to follow his lectures by reviewing the book prior to class.
Great professor! Long Saturday morning class goes by fast.
Aaron is probably one of the most passionate professors I have had. He genuinely wants students to learn and do well, and consistently incorporates feedback to improve his teaching. He explains the concepts well and his tests are very fair.
Aaron is probably one of the most passionate professors I have ever had. It's clear that he takes a lot of pride in his work, and is genuinely caring towards his students. His policy is that everyone can get an A if they put in the work, and he makes his tests very fair.
I was not looking forward to taking Chemistry, but Dr. Funk made intro Chem a really great experience. He really wants everyone to do well, creates a very open environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions, and explains things in a very clear, simple way. Tests are very straightforward and if you study you will get an A. Recommended
Dr. Funk is kind and genuinely wants to get to know all of his students (tough in a 75 student class!) Expectations are clear, provides previous exams to study with. If you do the practice exam 2-3 times before the test, you will have NO problem getting an A. I recently took Chem, the people who took it years ago struggled more than I did
Dr. Funk is an amazing way to begin the Chem series! He manages to breakdown tough concepts into easily understandable problems. He does't take attendance but definitely make it to every class as his in-class examples are so valuable towards your understanding of the topics! Tests are straightforward. Highly recommend his class- he's a gem!
I really enjoyed Professor Funk's class. He makes chemistry fun and understandable. I really appreciate how passionate he is about teaching. Class was straightforward: read the chapter, come to lecture and ask questions, do the practice exams, and you will do great! Great professor to start your Chem series with.
The class is straightforward. You will do fine if you understand the Practice Exams. Lectures do not go over anything that can't be taught by reading the Example problems from the book. He offers extra credit opportunities.
He gives you the opportunity to earn an "A" if you're willing to put in the work. His practice problems are from the book so I found it easier to go through the book on my since that would have been the 2nd time seeing these problems. He provides sample exams that are good representation of the class problems and the content of the actual test.
Professor is amazing if you are a student who desires to be "amazing" at chemistry. He goes through all the basics, and continues to build upon them for the various chapters. He is helpful, and will take his time to help you out. Great Professor!
Moves fast through material, but is willing to slow down and answer questions when prompted. He answered every question I asked throughout the semester, and in an in depth manner. He was personable, and related to the students. He clearly outlined what we needed to know for tests, and gave fair tests in my opinion. Wish he was teaching 14b.
Professor is clear and makes use of our time. He has a sense of humor and really makes an effort to provide you with a space to feel safe to ask questions. The more you ask the better you are prepared for test and in general, knowledge of curriculum. Suggest that you read before the class and also work with other students in study.
This is my first ever class at a university and I was nervous. Funk made a great first impression --open to questions, etc. His teaching style is quick and concise. Need more help? Ask him or refer to the book. Seriously, nothing is meant to be stupid easy at this level. It's simple enough to follow his notes and supplement with the book.
Dr. Funk is the coolest. I took his class as a prereq for grad programs, and I haven't taken chemistry since high school. I was overwhelmed at first, bc we jumped straight into math (don't expect 'this is an atom' 'this is how we read the periodic table') but after doing the problems at home on my own I was actually starting to grasp the material!
Great professor. Read before coming to class so your not lost.
Easiest science class ever.
He warns you in the first class that you may struggle if you took USA High School Chem, sadly, I hadn't taken Chemistry in over 10 years and I went to public school. I did a ton of supplemental reading like Khan Academy etc. if you are willing to put in the work, very doable, but not a beginner's class. Hated the book, buy the solutions manual.
Dr. Funk is an amazing professor. He is very enthusiastic, which really helps when learning a subject like Chemistry. His lectures are not boring, and gets to the point. He is very knowledgeable about the subject, and is very fair. He gives us resources to help with our tests. I appreciate his love for teaching. I definitely recommend his class!
Dr. Funk is a great professor. His passion for the subject makes the class easier and he encourages interaction. It's important to read the notes before class to get an idea what he'll be talking about. I'd highly recommend him for 14A.
Respectable guy and good teacher. He put in a real effort to make the class stimulating, rather than just going through the motions. He cut me some slack when I mis-bubbled my scantron after seeing I got the actual answer right. I appreciated that. The fact that the class was 4 hours on a Saturday was not fun, but that's not his fault!
Straight from the book,
Dr. Funk is a great professor, that I would not hesitate to have for another chemistry class. He makes lectures entertaining, while making sure he covers the material for the class. He is also very precise about what he expects for you to know for the tests. He is very open to offer help and encourages you to speak out to make the class better.
Very helpful in class when students ask questions. Very good about giving examples in class and practice ones before exam.
The class was pretty straightforward - it is Chemistry, after all. The lectures focused on walking through sample problems after a brief summary and using the examples to teach and reinforce concepts. Dr. Funk creates an environment where questions are encouraged - this is not easy to accomplish in a large (50+ students) lecture class.
The first day I came to this class I was nervous and wanted to quit. I asked him if he believes I would even have a chance at passing, He said if you put in effort you will pass, I took his advice and took the class which ended up being great!! Lectures are very clear and made chemistry interesting. Thank you so much professor
Awesome guy, heart of gold, and really devoted to his students and their success in his class. If only I could wrap my head around Chemistry, this would have been a phenomenal class. Hoping he teaches CHEM 14B in the Fall Quarter. Side note: Ladies (or gentlemen, not here to judge), he earned his hotness chili pepper, 100%.
Knowledgeable. Encouraging re: questions in lecture. Not be the fastest responder outside of class. Goes a little fast in lecture, but will re-review without question if you ask him to. Practice tests are pretty representative of actual test (80% of similar questions). Strongly based on example problems in the book. 5th Ed (not 6th ed) used.
He's a super nice, outgoing instructor and articulates his points very well. Practice tests are extremely similar to actual in class tests (almost to a fault) and lectures are fairly engaging. If I had to criticize him I would say that he's prone to tangents during lectures and his class could definitely offer a bit more challenge.
Dr. Funk is a really good professor. He really cares about his students and I was fortunate to have him as my professor. He was very helpful with all of my questions and seemed to be a very fair grader. Pay attention in class and you'll do well.
Good guy. Makes sure to try and understand what your questions are and isn't pretentious about it. I wish he was teaching the entire sequence. I don't want anybody to think that he isn't as tough on his exams as others may be; I think it's more about how he conducts class (motivating, easy-going) and facilitates learning (Q & A, examples).
He is funny in the class and tried so hard to make the class interesting. I like the class!
Professor Funk just cares that you try - if you go to class, follow along, ask questions, and read the book at home, you'll do fine. He's not trying to trick you. Plus, he's really interesting and quirky
I enjoyed this class. I always found chemistry to be challenging but Professor Funk made the material very approachable and welcomed questions which made it easier to clear up any misunderstandings that I had with any of the examples. Pretty slow on email response though.
A great teacher, clear about what is important for class and what you need to learn for the tests. What he says you need to learn is what you need to learn. (no curve balls). Only Minor complaint, every now and then it's hard to follow how he got from Step A-B, in the equation, (so more in depth step to step on the how and why would be nice).
Dr. Funk is a very good professor. He's respected by his students and he really seems to care about you learning the material. Fun guy, treats you as an adult and gives you every opportunity to learn and understand the course and its concepts. If you choose not to show up he will notice, and you will not perform well.
This is my second time taking this class. Dr. Funk was completely different than my undergrad prof because he is very open and patient and encourages student discussion. He explains examples very well and answers every question students may have. He makes Chemistry easy to understand. I also liked his demonstration on PET scans and tracers.
Dr. Funk is a great professor who really cares about the education of his students. He takes his time to answer questions thoroughly and ensures that there is a safe space to ask questions. He goes through every problem and is clear and concise. He does seem to go a bit too fast sometimes so bring your book to class and you wont get lost. Recommend
I would definitely recommend this professor. Very straight forward with the material. PRACTICE THE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK AND ON THE PRACTICE TEST!
Made class lively and interesting. If you go to class you will do well.
Creates an environment where students have no hesitation asking questions. Tests are pretty representative of the practice handouts given.
Dr. Funk is a great professor. He really wants everyone who puts effort into the class to succeed. He's very open to questions during lectures and is hands down the most patient professor I've ever had. So long as you attend lecture, work through examples/self-tests, and do the practice exams, you should do well.
Dr. Funk is a great professor. Definitely take him if you want to learn the material and do well.
Dr. Funk is hands down one of the best Professors i've had in my academic career. He makes the material easy & is always open to questions, even suggestions. He's very open about his expectations so you'll always be aware of whats expected of you & what you need to know. I suggest going to class & recording lectures because he gives a lot away.
Great teacher, I learned a lot, really recommend him for all your chemistry needs
Dr. Funk made me actually want to wake up for a 9 am class on a Saturday. He's really funny, explains everything clearly, and always throws extra credit at you if you're struggling. If you're like me and you don't have money to throw around for textbooks make sure to do a lot of practice problems - I can't stress this enough. Also trans friendly!!
Dr. Funk is a great professor, but the class format doesn't do him justice. Neither does the fact that I suck at chemistry.
If you have the chance to take a class with professor funk definitely do it! He cares about his students. Attendance isn't mandatory but u should go if you want to do well. Plus, he will give extra credit opportunities and hits on what will be on exams, during class.
Solid Professor Gives great feedback, explains concepts really well, fair graders, gives extra credit Should teach B as well!
GREAT PROFESSOR! HE IS: AMICABLE, APPROACHABLE, ARDENT ABOUT HIS STUDENTS AS WELL AS CHEMISTRY, AND HUMOROUS. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING THAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIM IS HIS ABILITY TO NOT RESPOND TO E-MAILS IN A TIMELY MANNER.
Dr Funk is a great professor who creates a safe atmosphere for his students to ask questions and really learn the material. He is a fair grader as tells you exactly what kind of questions will be on the test. He also gives practice exams from previous semesters so thats students know what to expect. It is a shame that he only teachesChemistry14XLA.
HE IS GREAT! I loved taking this class with Dr. Funk! He is very fair, gives you practice tests that are similar to the actual test, you definitely have to practice though! He offers extra credit throughout the class and on the tests. He is very funny, very kind, always in a good mood, and will answer ALL of your questions!
Dr. Funk is a great instructor that really cares about you understanding the material. There was a student in the class that asked a ridiculous amount of questions and rather than make him feel any less he would stop the class and wait for this student to get the work. I truly enjoyed taking his class and he really makes the material easy to get.
Great professor. I wanted to get refreshed on the materials after graduated from my 4 four year college and it was really really helpful learning from him. He is clear and simple.
Aaron Funk is a passionate professor, who takes the time to thoroughly discuss topics and is open to entertaining questions.
It's been a long time since I have had a chemistry teacher who was not only genuinely passionate about his work, but also someone who goes out of his way to explain the material clearly. Take his lectures if you can. So amped that da Funk is gonna be teaching 14B in the winter.
It's been years since I took my last chemistry class. First off, I like chem and physics very much but for some reason I didn't pursue this path. But right now I have some spare time and want to continue. Second, the professor is caring and responding to questions in class. The class is a little bit difficulty for me but I make it work out great.
This if the first chemistry class I have taken in about six years, so I was initially a little nervous about taking this class. Dr. Funk breaks down the material into manageable pieces and goes over plenty of examples in class to make sure you understand the material. He is approachable, caring, & always open to answering questions. Tests are fair.
Prefect Professor for students who are looking to make easy A. Some students will be surprised they know more about chemistry than this professor.
Dr. Funk really cates about his students and is very approachable. His lectures can go a bit fast so be prepared and do not miss class! His practice exams tell you exactly what he wants you to focus on for studying.
A fantastic professor! My last chemistry class was nine years ago, so I was incredibly nervous walking into the course. It is so refreshing to have a Professor who *actually* wants to be an exceptional educator. Dr. Funk creates an environment where students can freely ask questions--to repeat a concept, review the steps, another example, etc.-- without the fear, "That was previously covered...." For myself, the course is challenging but the tests are fair.

This class is by far one of the most amazing classes. Dr. Funk simplifies the difficult concept of chemistry and allows students to understand it in a straightforward fashion. Let us not misconstrue straightforwardness for easiness. Chemistry is anything but easy. Those who claim chemistry is easy have probably taken the same course multiple times.
Dr. Funk is a wonderful professor. He is extremely concise and astute which makes you want to attend his lectures which are very entertaining and informative. Attending every lecture and studying the questions he goes over in class/that are on his practice exams should prepare you well for his tests. Overall, I highly recommend him.
Dr Funck is a wonderful professor. He cares about his students and the quality of his work. I also found this to be quite a challenging class. If you work on the practice problems and the practice exams you will be well prepared for the exams. There is no homework requirement which may have been helpful for practice but overall the course was great
He is a great professor. You definitely will NOT fall asleep in his class. He is good at entertaining the class in between problems. He answers questions accurately and is willing to help you in any way he can. But, I wish he would do more than just one example per topic and I wish he would do it a lot slower so the class could do it with him.
Pro: his practice tests reflect the actual test. He doesn't trick anyone and really wants to see ppl do well. He encourages questions and will happily take any questions. For lecture, he walks you through practice problems in the textbook (GET 5th EDITION FOR HIS CLASS), so def study on your own! Con: he doesn't respond to emails all that much.
Chemistry is an intimidating subject and Dr. Funk does a great job trying to make you feel comfortable with the material. Definitely recommend practicing the problems from the textbook and going to lecture helps on exams. Professor likes to see improvement and encourages students to do better.
Chemistry is a challenging subject, but Dr. Funk's fun personality and concise guidelines made this class enjoyable. Be prepared to work very hard. If you put in the hours studying outside of lecture and carefully complete all of his practice exams it is possible to do well. I'd highly recommend Dr. Funk for the Chem series at UCLA Extension.
Dr. Funk makes chemistry a lot less daunting - questions are answered in a thorough and respectful way. Grading guidelines are extremely clear and fair. Though it is very straightforward, you still need to put in the work to get that A.
Chem itself is a challenging subject, yet Dr. Funk makes each example clear & easy to understand. He's inspirational not just professionally, but is an amazing human being who truly cares about his students. Test are fair. If you study the book examples,do practice tests, & attend lectures you will pass. He is approachable and lectures are fun.
One of the most memorable things I'll always remember from Dr. Funk is his speech from 1st lecture: he said that no matter what, we should never give up; even despite failing. If we want something, we can get it. He, himself, is an example of success. He inspires us by teaching us real-life examples of chemistry, engaging w/ us, & being patient.
Dr. Funk was awesome. However, he sped through a few problems skipping a few steps and for someone who is so knowledgeable in the field it makes sense. As for the rest of us learning the material, it can be a bit confusing. Overall, great class. If you work hard and put in the effort, you'll get an A for sure.
Dr. Funk's class was engaging and informative in the beginning. Towards the end Dr. Funk seemed to rush through challenging concepts. I often had to request detailed explanations of his calculations/methodology; these were not regularly provided in the final three lectures. His 14XLA course is difficult for non-science majors, but grading is fair.
He's willingness to answer questions. He believes there is no such thing as a bad question. He is also big on improvement. When you improve on a test he boosts your grade up.
He assigns a decent amount of work from book
Not very clear in class. Basically, goes over problems which are already solved in the text book. I would have liked if he had went over other problems in the text book. All his powerpoint materials are already in the book, I doubt he spends time on making lecture materials for his students. Sorry to say I had better chemistry teachers.
He's a good professor that is welcome to questions and if he doesn't know the answer to your question he's very open to hearing other students and what they think. I really enjoy his teaching style and it really encourages us to think outside the box and maybe even investigate some stuff on our own. I think it's the best way to learn.
Always open to questions and feedback from students and is happy to have students who might have a better grasp of the subject than others supplement his answers to questions and facilitate more helpful discussion in class. The slide notes he distributes before each class are extremely beneficial.
The usual, helpful and reliable.
Dr. Funk does a great job given the confines of the course schedule. This class really has too much information to cover with just one meeting per week (in a quarter system). He does quick examples of each topic and it is up to you to dig in and really learn the material.
Great professor that really wants students to learn the material and earn a good grade!
Very nice and exciting professor!
Dr. Funk is a caring and cool teacher who wants to make chemistry more simple for you. Sample exams and their solutions are given before each exam. Overall I had a great experience taking his class!!
Dr. Funk is fun and always makes sure his students feel empowered to do their best in class. Do his practice exams and go to class and you will do great!
Good professor. shown up to class, work on the HW and practice tests and you should do well.
So overall I think this professor is just average. He's a super nice guy and very friendly but as a professor not my favorite. His exams are pretty straight forward and lectures well. My only complaint is that he goes on tangents every single class when all I want to do is get through the material and focus. Pretty easy if you pay attention.
great professor. tries to get the class to participate and stay engaged in the material during lectures. he is understanding and really wants you to do well in his class. make sure to study the practice exams they are very helpful for the actual exams. he is good about answering questions and making sure everyone understands the material.
I need to read the text book to really understand the knowledge.
Being in this class with Dr. Funk was amazing, He was approachable and helpful. The class is definitely worth your while if you can dedicate a few hours to review the examples and do the assigned problems form lecture. He is clear in what he wants and there are no surprises, GREAT CLASS
Dr. Funk brings humor and a fresh perspective to the class. The lectures and practice exams are in line with student expectations for an exam, there are no trick questions or surprises. I took chemistry before in undergrad and this professor made it a much more enjoyable experience !
I really like the professor as a person, but I'm not sure if I like the class. He does the examples that already have the solutions provided in the book. Overall, it was ok. I find his exams to be fair. No trick questions. He's really funny so the class itself isn't boring.
Dr. Funk is changing the norm associated with higher education. He shows up to instruct with a positive and upbeat attitude that is care driven. He is well versed in Chemistry and he understands that the field is ever evolving. Dr. Funk is passionate and he provides an exemplar model for how higher education should be addressed. Thank you Dr. Funk
Dr. Funk is a compassionate and motivating teacher and truly tries to act as a instructor and not a gatekeeper. The lecture material could be rushed at time, but that was more a function of the class. Because he is so knowledgeable, there are times he skips over tricky concepts that are basic to him, but that's my only complaint.
he is encouraging and wants everyone to do well in his class. His lectures can be engaging but he will mainly focus on textbook examples.
This is is the best class I have ever taken. He is a great professor.
3 tests. 3 extra credit options. No homework.
I like using the text book and being able to reference questions later at home. This professor uses a lot of problems straight from the book. He gives great study guides that allows you to prepare for exams. He also gives you extra credit, so that's really helpful for bringing up exams grades. Lot's of humor throughout class:)
I really love to attend at such a great professor class. Dr. Funk always starts class with an inspiring sentences . Dr. Funk applies lots of textbook examples and tries to be straight instead of confusing students with tough matters. students also have different extra credit options to make up their grades.
Professor Funk is a great professor. He really cares about every student being able to understand each concept. He is a very approachable professor. He is also very good at explaining all the small details that will help you better understand each chemistry problem.
I loved this class, Dr. Funk was easy to understand and was trusted when it came to exams, his study guides were very helpful. Dr. Funk made me believe in chemistry again ! :)
Dr Funk is a great person and good guy his class is tough but fair he is caring and kind professor. I would take him again in a heart beat.
Great professor, cares about students doing well, willing to work with you to help you understand concepts
Dr. Funk is the man. He cares about his students doing well. He will re-do examples in class if students don't understand the first time - just ask!
I wish he was a bit more organized so that his lectures would be more easily digestible but his spontaneity is part of his hilarity so it's a give and take. I can tell that he cares for his students a lot, never change that and continue to inspire!
In this course you need to study the book previously to classes because the conceptual topics will not be addressed in class unless directly asked.
Dr. Funk explains the concept very straight forward but you also have to review it yourself with the textbook. His exams are similar to the practice exams. He is always available after class or in between breaks and does his best to explain or answer your questions. He's quite funny and is not afraid to tell you if he doesn't know something.
Professor Funk's class can be fun at times. He does a good job of making the lectures fun although he can get lost on a tangent which can be frustrating. He presents the material decently but I found the book really helped for questions he couldn't answer. Fun Teacher! Would Definitely take again!
Dr. Funk is one of those rare Professors with the gift of making a relatively boring subject exciting! He establishes a fun learning environment and creates the desire to learn. His lectures are entertaining and to the point. If you do the practice exams, pay attention during the lectures, and study, you'll do well!
Dr. Funk is enthusiastic and makes chemistry fun and interesting. He didn't always have the answer, but he would always do his best to explain and help students who were struggling. No assigned homework, only tests and a few extra credit assignments for grades. Would have like some assigned homework problems as chemistry takes repetition.
Dr. Funk is a great guy and really tries to help his students. However he is fairly new to teaching and you can tell. Example problems done in class are all from the book. He's practically reading the book to you and he tends to go on lots of tangents.
Highly recommend this class. Chemistry isn't easy but Dr. Funk makes this class alot more enjoyable. He's the most upbeat, energetic person I've ever met. Don't be afraid to ASK QUESTIONS! He's very helpful and isn't condescending. Show up, read the book, work through the examples, and you will have a great time. He's hilarious.
Energetic , motivating,very posotive
Dr. Funk is a really funny guy, he is by far my favorite teacher I have ever had in my whole life. His class material can be challenging since it is still Chem. but he really make it as easy as he could for all of us.
Dr. Funk makes classes on Saturday morning's fun to attend. He is very down to earth and likes to relate to his students, which is a great quality for a professor to have. Also, he is very clear on what we need to do in order to do well in his class, no tricks. Take him!
Clearly dedicated, just not a good teacher. Non-responsive to emails and he is not good at explaining concepts in class. I ended up having to read the textbook over again to learn anything
Really solid, goes through everything you need to know for the exams. Straight forward and makes class on Saturdays mornings bearable.
Professor Funk is one of very interesting professors I have met ever. The course is not easy but he makes everything clear and very helpful. I'd like to take his other class. Take him!!!!!
Very interesting teaching style, completely necessary for a 9am Saturday class. I found this class hard. I definitely had to read outside of the class meetings. I plan to take him again next quarter. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
Overall, great guy. He makes it very clear what you need to know for tests and there's no surprises. Some of his questions are identical or very close to the practice exams so make sure you do those and study from those. Also know the concepts obviously but overall great course especially for a Saturday morning.
Dr. Funk seems to genuinely care about his students. He wants to see you succeed and do well. He gives you all the tools you need to do well in his class, but you are going to have to work. His tests are fair and he gives you plenty of material to prep with. Go to class, do the work (no HW, so you have to be self-motivated), and you will do well.
Professor Funk's class is very interesting and an excellent choice for those who really want to do well.
One of the best professors Ive ever had, hands down. It had been a while since Ive taken a chemistry course (about 10 yrs) and he was so welcoming and helpful. He made me really feel like its ok if you find science difficult. I think if I would have had any other professor I would have dropped it. Hopefully taken 14B next semester with him!
Dr. Funk is a great professor. He cares about his students and is very welcoming. If you understand the practice exams, you can definitely get an A. I really like the fact that he does not surprise you with things he did not cover in class. He gets all his examples from the textbook so you should really get the book, it will be a great investment.
I liked his teaching style. He's always welcoming if students asked questions during lecture, and he always replied to emails (not always right away, but he answered them). His lectures were thorough, although the material is challenging so sometimes it was hard to follow. Overall, I would recommend his class to anyone willing to work.
Dr. Funk has a good heart. He works hard to have students feel comfortable in his classroom. He is very responsive to questions and is very "down to earth" when it comes to helping his students understand the subject. he isn't very organized but he makes up for it with his positive attitude. The test are very doable but may need some luck.
This professor cares about his students. He always encourages students to speak up and loves to answer students' questions. He is fair and uses the textbook and what he covered in class to make his tests. Very understanding professor and helps students to engage in class. I was dreading chemistry but his class helped me to gain confidence and try.
Fam, A. Funk is a chill prof. Tests are fair, study ch examples, follow slides and class examples, no hw, very funny, very kind, offers e.c.
Dr. Funk is a cool dude. His lectures are super straight forward and his tests are very fair. As long as you show up to class, take notes, and re-do the practice problems he does in class along with the self tests then there shouldn't be any reason why you don't get an A in the class.
Dr. Funk is a really down-to-earth kind of guy and he writes awesome inspirational quotes before class. He's really friendly and approachable and you will do well in class if you just review the stuff you learned in class with some book problems.
Read book and do assigned exercises mentioned in lecture slides. Do the related self tests for more practice. May be helpful to read sections in between focuses in lecture. If text is too dense and technical, it helps to get the for dummies or made easy supplemental books.
He appreciates class participation and doesn't carry any ego into the classroom. He strives to make himself and the material approachable. Wish that lectures went into more detail and covered more examples than just what the book provides. This was his first time teaching this class so I think that with more preparation it would be a very good one.
Dr. Funk is go-to professor if your chemistry is weak. His lectures are well translated for students with struggles. He understands its hardships of concepts, and works hard for us so we can actually enjoy learning the materials. Read his quotes in the beginning of lectures! Those are helpful in both studies and lives.
Dr. Funk is the best Chemistry Professor for Chem 14A.
Dr. Funk does a great job of creating an environment where students are able to ask questions. A very approachable teacher.
The instructor does not know what he is teaching about. That's not his fault, but UCLA needs to evaluate what the instructor is capable of. He is a very good guy. Just wrong class he's assigned. This class is best suited for retakers or who really needs easy UCLA credits. If you want to learn, go somewhere else.
Dr. Funk is a very passionate teacher who loves his students. He brings a great energy to the class and makes chemistry a lot more fun than I would've ever thought.
Dr Funk does not explore the topics too much in depth and stays away from too conceptual discussions, focusing more on examples and exercises from the book. He enjoys radioactivity and there he excels, pity it is only 1 class, though.
Dr. Funk is very passionate about teaching. He makes sure students have clear understanding of the topics. The tests have very similar questions from the book, so make sure to go over what's in the book would be a very good way to study for his tests. He's an amazing professor that actually cares about people's future!!
Funk is a great guy. He truly cares about his students and tries his best to make the class fun and entertaining. There are 3 tests given. No homework, 2 extra credit opportunities. Best to go over the practice problems, those are the basis of the exams.
If you need to take a chemistry class, you will probably want Dr. Funk as your professor. His class is fun, interactive, and time well spent. He enjoys teaching as much as he wants his students to succeed in life. For his class, get the book, do practice problems and understand the concepts and you should do well.
Dr. Funk really cares about students and tries to provide a positive and comfortable environment for students. He exactly states what concepts we should study more for exams and gives students extra credit opportunity. He is an approachable person in case of questions.
Dr. Funk is a very approachable professor. He doesn't make you feel dumb.
He is a passionate professor. He wants everyone to do well in his class. Also, he is very fair. If you want an A, i will get an A. If you just want to pass, you just pass. its all up to you in this class
I wish he would teach 14c. It's been a blast having him for 14A and 14B.
Dr Funk is awesome. I think his tests are representative of the material you covered in class. Definitely take him for Chem 14A. I think he provides a solid foundation for future Chem classes. Plus he starts his classes with inspo quotes so that's fun. You won't regret it!
Granted it's his 1st time w/ 14B, is fair, & goes out of his way to love his students, I'm kind of disappointed. I didn't learned as much as I wanted and it stinks that his teaching was influenced by how much/little he liked the topic, but he was honest about it. He's still bad at responding to "?s" and drops the ball in sending movie links, etc.
Dr Funk is the student's advocate when it comes to Intro Chemistry. He gives straightforward exams, provides ample examples, and is open to answering questions. This was his 1st quarter in 14B, and while its had hiccups, his lecture style of going over examples carries over from 14A and is great for students that need help on abstract calculations.
Now taking Dr Funk for the second time, had in 14A, I would take him again. This quarter this class was a little more difficult since he did not have the information, for 14B ready, and this was his first time teaching it. Overall i got a lot out of it, and prepped me for OChem.
I liked this professor !
Dr. Funk is always willing to help he's caring and really wants everyone to enjoy themselves while learning challenging material. He's a great professor and knows how to teach to relative newcomers, He's a great choice.
Dr. Funk is a fun professor. He gives useful examples during class. He is very encouraging and will motivate you to continue pursuing your dreams. There is no h.w. Do the examples. Undersrand concepts.
Chem 14B: Dr. Funk is a fun professor. He gives useful examples during class. He is very encouraging and will motivate you to continue pursuing your dreams. There is no h.w. Do the examples. Undersrand concepts.
I wouldn't recommend him because he doesn't know how to teach and also does not guide you with the tests. I ended up having to study a lot harder for this compared to my physics and calculus class , and chemistry is normally my easier subject
My favorite professor at extension. He made Saturday morning class worth going to. Thank you Dr. Funk!
Dr. Funk is definitely an enjoyable professor to have for Sat morning. I had him for 14A and he's very good for that class. I still like him for 14B. Definitely do the example problems in the book AND read the slides
Dr. Funk is awesome!! I had him for 14A and 14B and wish he was teaching the rest of the series. He gives two midterms and a final, attendance isn't mandatory but you should go. He is probably the only teacher who won't put me to sleep on a Saturday morning and you can tell he cares a lot about his students. Definitely take him, you wont regret it!
Didn't have as good a grasp on the material as 14A. Relies on the book a little too much, should do his own examples to help with understanding. Dr. Funk is very kind and wants everyone to do well, and he will make a point to learn everyone's name even in a 100+ student class.
Having taken Dr. Funk for both 14A and 14B, I can safely say he is a great professor and person. His personality is bubbly and cheerful, and I don't think I've ever laughed as much in a pre-med science course as much as this one. He keeps concepts organized; in order to pass, study the questions he does in lecture + the reviews. Highly recommended!
I think Dr. Funk is a nice person. He is approachable and enjoys interacting with the students. As far as his classes go, I am slightly disappointed. I wish he would have been more prepared for the lectures. It is difficult to reach him via e-mail. If you want him to reply before your exams, i'd recommend e-mailing him a week ahead.
The cynical and misanthropic side of me wishes I had something bad to say about Dr. Funk but there's really nothing bad one can say about him. His lectures are entertaining and insightful, he pushes his students to learn without trying to make it impossible to pass. He makes chemistry accessible and fun to learn.
Dr. Funk made Saturday mornings worth coming to lecture. I enjoyed his class and I learned a lot.
Dr Funk is an incredibly nice professor. He is down to earth and manages to get to know all of his students. This quarter had a few hiccups because it was the first time teaching 14B but we made it through and I actually studied much more that usual, utilized the book heavily and felt that I learned a lot. I recommend him for 14A, he's well versed.
Dr. Funk is such an amazing guy! His passion for chemistry really makes the class fun and interesting. Out of the entire chem sequence, his class was the ONLY one I looked forward to every week because he actually made the material understandable. He does a fantastic job answering your questions and will do everything to ensure your success in chem
Dr. Funk does a good job teaching us the essentials. He also listens to his students and their needs which is very important. He makes sure his tests are fair and the class is fair. I recommend him to everyone that needs to take chemistry!
Dr. Funk does a good job teaching us the essentials. He also listens to his students and their needs which is very important. He makes sure his tests are fair and the class is fair. I recommend him to everyone that needs to take chemistry! Great teacher.
Had him for 14A and did not disappoint for 14B. He is a great professor and just like any other class, you need to study the material to earn an A. Not one to judge a students ability to learn, but I felt lot of students try to take advantage of his kindness on exams and would ask questions that clearly could be googled/looked up yourself.
Great class, be sure to attend lecture to see what he decides to cover. Exams are easy if you study. Kept class upbeat, funny guy!
Student advocate. You'll likely hear him say, "Don't expect me to know the answers to all the questions off the top of my head, but expect me to work with you to make sure your questions get answered." Didn't explain too many concepts. Mostly repeated examples of problems on the board from the text book. Usually teaches 14A
Teaching style is tailored to those who have very little experience with chemistry, Which is good if you are taking chemistry for the first time
Dr. Funk is a smart guy who really cares about his students, but he is limited by his large class sizes. The large lecture format (with widely varying levels of proficiency) forces him into a teaching style that caters towards the lowest common denominator (works basic examples in class). Don't expect a true discussion of theory / applications.
Ugh - coming to class early Saturday morning, but Dr. Funk made it worthwhile! I wish he was teaching orgo! Super relatable, inspiring, and kind. You're graded on just three exams - no homework or anything - the material of which is in his lecture notes (you use the book too, but study the notes and examples he does, and you should be fine!).
He is truly a gem. He also offers extra credit, which is nice! Graded on just three tests - study the notes and come to class, and you should do fine.
Dr. Funk teaches Chemistry in the way it should be taught - to inspire interest and learn the essential concepts and calculations. Great guy, makes Saturday lecture doable. You have to do all the examples and self tests in the book to do well in the class!
Great professor! He really cares about his students and has well structured lectures. If you understand the material from the powerpoints and examples, you should do well on the exams! Better than any of the chemistry professors I had at UCLA during my undergrad.
This was Dr. Funk's first time teaching this course and as much as I love the guy, it wasn't great. His desire to see his students succeed hasn't changed, and he is always willing to do what he can to help. It was unfortunate to see him struggle through the bumps associated with teaching a new course, but we survived. He's great for 14A though!
This professor, while quite good in the Chem XL 14A course, was severely underprepared to teach Chem XL 14B. His slideshows were evidently created at the last minute, his lectures were rushed (the prof would deflect questions with a joke when he couldn't clarify a concept) and he was not good at returning graded material in a timely manner.
Dr. Funk is an easy going professor. For the quarter that I have last taken him, he was quite disorganized and his tests were hard to prepare for. Other than this quarter, he is a solid prof.
Nice dude. He makes the material super accessible. Sometimes he makes mistakes during the examples he goes over, which is a bit frustrating when you're trying to learn it for the first time, but overall he's good.
It was Dr. Funk's first time teaching this course, which was apparent, but he was able to guide and teach us all the same. I appreciate him putting in all the effort to make sure his students were learning the material. Especially since he did a make-up midterm due to confusion during the first midterm, which was very kind of him & not necessary.
Funk really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Great teacher!
Enjoyable class. The textbook is necessary for problems. If you can solve those and the self-tests after each problem, you have a solid foundation for the exams. Fair exams. Great learning environment. I don't think he's teaching 14B again, so don't pass up the opportunity to take him for 14A!
Dr. Funk is a good teacher who cares about students. This was the inaugural class for 14B and it was a bit bumpy but didn't take away from my ability to succeed in the class. I would be confident in saying that the next 14B class will be better because Dr. Funk is committed to becoming a better instructor. With a good work ethic, you should be fine
First of all, Professor Funk is a great person and caring educator!! He genuinely wants his students to succeed. The frustrating part is that it seemed like he came to class unprepared to teach the material. He obviously knows advanced chemistry well, but seems to have forgotten some basics and has a tough time explaining some fundamental things.
He is better at teaching chem xl 14a than the next course in the series. He tried hard to teach the material but it was okay.
Dr. Funk is pretty laid back and loosely presents the material in class. He's also friendly and just plain silly at times. It is hard for me to pay attention to a multi-hour lecture the whole time and so his teaching style was a nice break from the intense, dense lectures from my other classes. His lecture slides were useful test study guides.
Dr. Funk is by far the greatest professor I have had in my entire undergraduate career. He really cares about his students and does everything for them to succeed. Unlike other science professors, he actually has a heart. Weeding you out is not part of his philosophy.
Dr. Funk, you are the man! Not a big chem guy, but I greatly appreciated your quotes at the start of each class. They really made me think, and I will carry some of those for the rest of my life. Appreciate you as a teacher and as a human!
Dr. Funk came unprepared to many of the lectures, however, I think the class will go much better his second time around. He provided us with powerpoints that were helpful for the exams. Some of the information on them was a little vague, and I found myself reading entire chapters to be safe. Thus, you will definitely need the book to do well.
Dr. Funk made Chemistry at 9am as enjoyable as it can be. You get an inspirational quote to ponder at the beginning of every class to set the mood. The class is great in the sense that you know exactly what will be required of you. Master the problems covered in class and similar ones in the book and you can do well. He is very caring and funny.
I took Dr. Funk for Chem 14A and Chem 14B. I definitely think and agree with other reviews that he is a much better professor for Chem 14A. I understand that it was his first time teaching Chem 14B, although I do believe the material could be presented better in class. You'll have to read the book and do all examples over and over to do well.
Dr. Funk is very caring, passionate and helpful. Took him for 14A & due to my positive experience, signed up for 14B with him. It was his first time teaching 14B + at times was a little un prepared/un familiar with material. Still, he did his best to help us understand concepts and find success in solving problems in class. Inspirational guy.
Great caring professor. Would take him again!
This quarter was incredibly frustrating. I don't recommend him for 14B. His class is still probably easier than who usually teaches it. BUT, take him for 14A. He teaches the material better and the exams are easy. And you should bring your book to class so you know what problem he's solving on the board. He only writes out the solution.
This was his first time teaching Chem 14B, he usually teaches 14A, but it wasn't bad. Lecture was fine, but he should use more examples in class. On the other hand, he will answer as many questions in class as he can without taking up lecture time. He doesn't always reply to emails fast enough, but it's an option.
Although this was Dr. Funk's first time teaching this course, he tried his best to give us the tools necessary to thrive in further Chem courses. As a person I admire him b/c he gives so much w/o expecting anything in return. The course is difficult & requires time outside of lecture. Study the book, watch videos, and if possible find a good tutor.
Dr. Funk is an awesome professor. Study, study, study. Not like 14A. This class requires a lot of time.
Half of the things we were going over in lecture I did not understand. With that said make sure you read before going to class. Dr. Funk's sense of humor makes up for the boring topics.
This was Dr. Funk's first time teaching 14 B. Although it was not bad, he is a much better 14A teacher. Regardless, he is awesome and really cares for his student so I recommend taking one of his classes.
Did a pretty decent Job of teaching this class for his first time, he will definitely do a better Job the second time around. All in all Glad he guided me through gen-chem.
Gives good feedback, respected, inspirational, hilarious, caring, gives extra credit. I really like Dr. Funk. He is energetic, funny, and definitely down-to-earth. He welcomes and encourages even the most obvious questions most students are afraid to ask. You really get the sense that he is earnest and genuinely cares about helping students pass.
Dr. Funk is a hilarious guy and really cares about his students. However, if you need to actually know chemistry for tests like the MCAT, you won't learn the material from him because he covers everything at a very surface level. It's an easy A but you'll have to learn things by yourself.
Really amazing prof.
I love Dr. Funk! He is caring for his students and most of all he knows his audience. Most of are looking for that easy A and be gone. I will recommend him for people, like me, who are "allergic" to chemistry.
Dr. Funk is a funny guy. Loves his wife. Cannot teach 14B. Do recommend taking 14A with him though.
Dr. Funk is one of those rare professors that really cares about his students. He makes you think and in the process helps you learn. He's not condescending and does a great job explaining concepts during breaks. The difficulty of problems ramps up in 14B compared to 14A. Make sure you read the book examples and you'll be fine.
Keeps lectures and the topic interesting. Very open to questions. I wish he was teaching 14C : )
Was teaching a new class, and one of the first exams given had some mistakes that made its way into the test. The professor was fair about offering a retake. Expect to spend some time reading the book and doing example problems on your own time. Understanding and helpful, passionate.
awesome instructor
great professor! very understanding and reasonable. wish he was teaching the whole chem series!
He's the most approachable professor on campus. He genuinely cares about each students learning experience and holds himself very accountable for any mistakes or misunderstandings. If you genuinely want to learn about a subject and he's your professor, expect an open and interactive environment with a solid well rounded teacher.
Dr. Funk was by far the BEST instructor I have had in any college course. I have an undergraduate degree as well as a Master's and I have never looked forward to going to a class more than Dr. Funk's!! Thank you so much for being so inspirational and thorough.
Dr. Funk allowed for the freedom for us to ask questions. Most professors don't and this was a breathe of fresh air. But be warned this course in particular was difficult. A lot of math and repetition was required, YouTube was my best friend. His exams were clear cut but the final was super hard and some of the final topics were rushed.
Dr Funk is fine. A lot of people aren't happy with the last exam, which I did fine. The truth is that the chemistry 14XB is easier compared to what you'd normally see in a premed weed out class at USC or UCLA, which I have taken. The final is not easy but not difficult either. If you study for it like a premed weed out class you'd be fine.
Your final grade is based on two midterms (25% each) and a final worth 50% of your total grade. There is also the possibility of extra credit that can make about a 2 to 3% difference in your overall grade. Professor Funk is very kind and is very open to questions . The tests reflect the material. The class is is good for self starter type students
14 A/B. Biased ^reviews for EC. he's a good guy but as professor basic. Classes are 3 hrs, he talks about himself ALOT & students. Moody this quarter. You have to teach yourself directly from book. Used tb examples as examples in class. Counterproductive, why not show us how to do another problem? Practice tests provided & Qs repeated. A is doable
Dr. Funk is a great professor. He is encouraging and willing to answer questions. He creates an environment conducive to learning and growing. Grade is based of two midterms and final. Sometimes I wish we had problems sets to force understanding before the test. Overall, I highly recommend his class for those taking Gen Chem.
Dr. Funk is brilliant & positive. He takes time to answer any and all questions. However, his lectures are very fast paced and frequently go off tangent. I find myself having to re-teach myself a lot. Midterms are dense; a lot of the problems are long and we are limited in time. Staying after class for clarification on content would be beneficial.
Having been a pre-med student at UCLA for a portion of my undegrad, I appreciate Dr. Funk for the following reason: you know what you are going to get. The lectures are based from the book examples and if you understand the logic behind those, the tests are very similar. Same with the practice exams. If you study your grade will reflect your effort
Aaron Funk is inspirational , hilarious and caring. Focuses solely on the subject matter. Provides good revision topics before tests.
If you are pre-med and take the course seriously you can get an A. I wish he provided more suggested problems to cement the concepts for the MCAT. I learned basic concepts through Khan Academy and did the practice exams until I understood every prob well. Pretty basic but I don't think I will be well prepared on topics not specifically tested on.
You do have to attend lecture if you want to know what's going on in the book. Even though there is no assigned readings or homework, you do have to use the book to work on problems to grasp the information in class. Doing the self-test problems in the book will definitely prepare you for exams along with his powerpoint slides, and his mock tests.
He is a great human but he is not meant to be a teacher. He does not know how to explain the material, literally repeats what is on the book and does not elaborate. He does not teach material that helps with the MCAT. He gets distracted easily and discusses topics, way too often, that are not related to the class.
Great experience with starting Chemistry over after 5+ years!
First off, I think that Dr. Funk is an amazing person. However, I feel that there was not much explanation to accompany the example problems we did in class. I had to teach myself a lot of the concepts through YouTube and Khan Academy and I do feel a little unprepared for Chem 14B. Also, he goes off subject a lot, so be prepared for that.
Dr. Funk is an AMAZING professor and human being! He has such a kind heart and truly cares about his students. I took science classes at junior college and at UCLA and most professors can care less about students or issues outside of school. One thing I do suggest is that Dr. Funk allows a open forum for students to ask questions and answer them!
Good at explaining difficult concepts & is more than willing to continue answering questions in order to ensure all students have a good understanding before moving forward. Make sure you attend lectures & wait until the first class to buy the book (its not the same as listed), it'll save you the struggle of searching for concepts all over the book
While the professor is very caring and kind, he doesn't explain the content well. The course requires you to do a lot of independent studying and learning outside of class because he goes on tangents in lectures. He does care about the students, which is wonderful, but he needs to brush up on content before he gives lectures.
Dr. Funk is a cool guy, but I wish he went over more practice problems during class since I don't have a science background. It would also be helpful if he provided a detailed description for the answers on practice tests. Recommend students to show up to class to go over material; would also recommend to wait until start of class to buy book.
Like most chem classes at UCLA, you will need to do outside studying/self-teaching for the class. This is the reality for most (if not all) classes here. However, what makes Professor Funk better than most Chem profs is that he does not try to trick you. He is super straightforward and tells you what to study in order to be successful.
Dr. Funk was a great lecturer! His small (or large) tangents really helped make the time in class go by. I wish Dr. Funk went more into detail about the material rather than just doing one topic per Chapter. We glazed over a lot of vocab which may have helped material stick better rather than relying on memory. Also wish we could have a cheat sheet
Dr. Funk makes 4 hour of chemistry on a Saturday enjoyable. Mixed into helpful explanation of the material are entertaining, albeit occasionally longwinded, tangents. Some find this annoying, but it kept me from dreading each morning. No matter how stupid a question may seem to you, he creates an environment where you feel comfortable asking it
First off, Dr. Funk moves through his lectures very quickly and is somewhat unorganized. Second, he tends to take it for granted that you understand more than you do. However, he is very approachable and I can sense that he cares. Ultimately, I wish he would be more thorough and organized.
Dr. Funk is hilarious and provides great life advice, plus he makes going to class less dreadful for sure. As for the class instructing- he can sometimes overestimate the class' knowledge and skip explaining problems. Would recommend self-teaching and just a LOT of effort on your part to get that A.
Dr. Funk is an exceptionally wonderful chemistry professor. That being said, he makes sure everyone understands each topic that is being covered before moving on. One thing - probably the only thing, as others have mentioned - that I wish he would change about his class, would be to stay ON TOPIC. Otherwise, he was GREAT!!!
Very encouraging, thorough, open to questions and really tries to make sure his students understand the material.
Dr. Funk was great for the class, patient and open to questions. He does go off topic way to often which makes it hard to concentrate. Another thing is that he shows solved in-text problems in class, Id prefer we practiced more questions that are not solved yet in the book. Otherwise, very positive and happy class!
Pretty solid professor, if you're not willing to go to class and really put in the work yourself then missing class will reallllly reflect badly on your test score. three exams, last exam is cumulative. practicing problem is key
Great professor. He cares about its students and is willing to help answer questions. One thing I would do differently during his lectures is give a couple more examples to help with study guides.
Dr. Funk is great at breaking down the material to a level that is more easy to understand. Sometimes goes off on a tangent, but makes the class more enjoyable!
Keeps it light but for a 4 hour class he can afford to explain things much more thoroughly. The tangents are too much, at this level people should be able to stick with a lecture regardless of the material. The concepts are lengthy, so having a more robust, thorough lecture would be a better supplement for homework rather than glossing over things.
Professor Funk is a great professor in that he breaks down complex topics into easy to understand sections. His way of teaching makes the transition into the field of chemistry easy. For those that are concerned, he offered extra credit opportunities this quarter (Fall 2017) which was worth a few % points. If you miss lecture, you'll fail. Read!
Material is presented via PowerPoint slides and most of the class time is spent doing problems in the book. Definitely do the practice problems and the self-tests as they are more often than not on the exams. Definitely enjoyed the life talks that he would do because it helped break up the 4 hr lecture into smaller segments that weren't so daunting
Dr. Funk is an amazing human being and a great professor. He really wants his students to succeed and creates a welcoming learning environment for everyone. Sometimes he goes through certain problems too quickly but if you ask him to slow down and explain certain steps he will and its super helpful!
He is a cool person and encourages students to ask questions. In the class, he goes through the examples in the text book. Overall, if you have science background, you will do fine in this class.
Dr. Funk is an approachable and kind instructor, who is interested in making the class interesting, as well as providing good instruction. He breaks up the lecture in bite sized sections, and includes funny stories and interludes to keep the content from getting too dry.
Good teacher, but can sometimes not go through problems step by step.
No +/- sub grades. Nice for those in the lower ranges of the grade boundaries but unfair to those in the higher ranges.
I really like this professor. He makes lectures so interesting and he is really patient outside of class. I would definitely take his class once again because it has been an absolute pleasure taking the class with Professor Funk.
The best professor I have had so far
