Dr. Garner was literally the best. I really do not like chemistry, and I did not mean to sign up for the biochemistry section, I really enjoyed his class. Be ready to study a lot, because this class is pretty difficult, but there are 4 practice exams before each exam and 2 of them are past exams. He tries to learn everyone's name in a big class.
Dr. Garner is amazing and I would take his class if you can. The class is slightly more difficult than normal Chem 110 but he offers a good amount of extra credit to help you out.
I respect him for the way he cared about his students, but I honestly think he is a terrible professor. His lectures don't cover the material very well, and his quizzes and exams are super tough. He gives out lots of extra credit, which was my only saving grace to passing the class, but I do not recommend him at all for chem 130.
Chem is a naturally difficult subject but he does an amazing job explaining it clearly. You definitely want Garner if you need this class. The concepts in 110B also set up better for Ochem better than regular 110. Loved that the textbook was online and free. Easy points for attendance plus you get great practice doing tophat questions.
I am not joking when I say that I would die for this man. I've never fully understood chemistry until this class. Garner's lectures are detail-heavy, but he explains concepts so clearly and he is also extremely helpful during office hours. He literally tries to memorize everyone's names in a huge lecture hall. TAKE GARNER!!! You will not regret it!
the class itself is awful but he is the only reason i passed the class he was always available to answer question, i recommend going to his office hours and just getting to know him. do the top hat even if its just on ur phone at home, i received a 30 on two exams and still got a c so dont get scared and drop the class.
Dr. Garner was an AMAZING professor for CHEM 110B. He truly cares about his students and is always willing to help outside of class even if you can't make it to regular office hours. He explains concepts so clearly, and his practice tests are 100% reflective of what you will see on exam day - no surprises. Seriously can't recommend him enough!
I LOVE THIS MAN. My favorite thing about Garner is his study materials, he has plenty of practice exams and has a good couple extra credit practice exams, DO THEM! This class sucks, so if you have to take Chem110, take 110B with Garner. I'm an engineer and hate chem, but Garner makes it not so bad. Homework is fine and find friends in recitation!
This man is my favorite professor here. He is so kind, makes things very easy to understand, and is willing to go above and beyond to help you if needed.
Garner does a great job of explaining a difficult class in simple terms. His lectures are reflective of what is on the test, especially the TopHat questions. He also offers many resources to study for the tests that are very similar to how the test is set up.
The best professor ever! Garner actually cares for his students and wants them to succeed. His lectures contain a lot of details but they are actually interesting and easy to sit through. He is also very accessible through office hours or appointments. Extra credit is given! Tests are difficult, but if you study you'll do fine. TAKE GARNER!!!!
Most caring professor ever. He goes out of his way to learn every student's name in a huge lecture. This is a difficult class but if you but in the time and pay attention in lectures you will be fine. Garner's office hours are a big help and he wants his students to do well. I can go on for so long about how amazing he is.
He is great. Gets to know everyone and is good at explaining. He paces classes very well and while the class is difficult, he gives opportunities for extra credit and is super helpful during office hours. If you have to take Chem 110 or 112, I highly recommend him.
Dr. Garner is an amazing teacher who does his best to teach a difficult topic. Attendance is mandatory in a sense measured in TopHat completion, homework is due weekly, and there is a textbook available online. He also provides a lot of material to prepare for exams.
Professor Garner is the best chemistry teacher I've had in my life! Definitely take his class if you have the opportunity, it's well worth it
i love dr. garner for chem 112b, the exams are hard so be ready to put in the work. you can tell he cares about all of his students and wants you to succeed. offers extra credit but does not curve exams. 12/10 highly recommend. the class itself is impossibly hard but dr. garner is a great dude
He was honestly one of the best professors I had during my first semester ever at PSU. He is super funny and love engaging the class into the lecture any chance he gets. I would def try to go for him!
Already made my schedule to have him for next semester. Chem could be confusing, but he makes the content so much more understandable. His practice exams are exactly like the real exams so as long as you do the hw, ask for help when needed, and do the practice exams, you'll do perfectly fine. Take him for real :P
Lots of recources, Fun proffessor, lots of TAs to help out. Dr. Garner made Chem 110B fun, although it was a challenge.
Doesn't overwhelm or pressure student for studying. You will not do or study anything in the recitation, but is good for free grade. The case study at semester end is a difficult to understand if you are not familiar with bio chemistry, so this course is not recommended if you are not familiar with that or have an option for 110 instead of 110B
The class itself is difficult, so there is not much room for diff between profs. Garner however is super caring and learns everyone's names. He also is the best at explaining concepts from what I've seen. Although the class is hard, if you make an effort you should get an A. I got 104% and I'm pretty dumb.
GREAT PROFESSOR CANNOT RECOMMEND HIM ENOUGH! CHEM 110B can be a tough course, but Dr. Garner made it much more bearable. Seriously the best, so easy to talk to and never makes students feel like they're dumb. Very approachable and caring professor, I loved this class and plan to take him as much as possible with Chemistry sources.
Outstanding lectures! It is almost like he is predicting what questions students might have and answers them before they are even asked. His team of TAs and LAs is also awesome. Both him and the group of TAs and LAs clearly care whether you learn. You will have to put in the work, but it is not anything crazy. Alexa Budman as a TA is also awesome!
Professor Garner (Ronald in the course catalog) is the best teacher I've ever had. He has a special gift in making difficult course concepts very easily understandable in his amazing lectures. With Garner as opposed to my friends with other professors, I had significantly less assigned work but greater comprehension. Exams matched practice tests.
Chem 110 is a hard class, but 110B is even harder. Dr. Garner is very smart, almost too smart. He used to teach at Harvard if that tells you anything. He seems nice at first, but at the end of the class it was getting difficult for me, and he was reluctant to help me in office hours. I ended up with a D when I could have had a C if I had help.
Do not choose 112B if you are not a chemistry genius. Dr. Garner's classes are great, but the exams are very difficult, and the difficulty of the official exams has nothing to do with the difficulty of the PRACTICE exams!
I had Dr. Garner in my first semester at Penn State, and I do not believe any other professor will best him in quality, care, and resources. There is something special about a professor that takes the time to learn everybody's name in a 350 person lecture hall. The case study takes grading weight off the exams, so 110B is more forgiving than 110.
Garner is amazing, he really cares about his students learning the material. He will break everything down step by step if you need it. Definitely go to his office hours. The week of test he always extends his office hours unlike most professors! The class chem 110B and 112B (he teaches both) are hard but taking it with him is worth it!
I would literally DIE for this man. No exaggeration. He is such a sweet, understanding man. He is also really good at teaching the material. He is my FAVORITE professor ever. His class times are usually later in the day (3:35), but it is so worth it. PLEASE take his class if you need to take CHEM 110 and CHEM 112.
Garner is such a great chemistry professor. I wish I had taken him for Chem 110B as well because he is amazing at simplifying topics for his students and makes such an effort to get to know every single student he teaches. I would highly recommend taking him for this course.
My favorite professor of all time - my second semester with Aaron (AKA Ronald). I could not recommend someone more for such a difficult course. He made Chemistry SO easy and understandable, and Piazza is the most amazing forum. Take 110B/112B regardless of your major because it is worth it! Best TAs and always responded to questions within minutes.
Clear and rewarding lectures, always gets through the lecture slides, enjoys what he does, explains course material in an understandable way, tells you everything you need to know for the exams.
To this day Dr. Garner is one of the best professors I have ever had. He manages to teach complex topics without being verbose and adds humor into his lectures at just the right times. This class is difficult, but if you pay attention and come to lecture, Dr. Garner will make sure you succeed. I highly, highly recommend you take his class.
Professor Garner makes a complex course manageable with his clear explanations and helpful office hours. While the class is challenging, the case study and support from TAs like Alexa make it doable. unstuck ai was a great study aid alongside the textbook.
Garner is such a great professor with interesting lectures and not too much homework. Chem is hard but I feel I didn't do as awful as I could've thanks to Garner. He cares about his students (memorized almost everyone's names in the 350 person lecture hall) and is always willing to help outside of class time as well.
Chem is hard but taking it with garner is the easiest. He explains things so well, is so smart that he takes time to memorize everyone's names, and the TA/LAs are really helpful. You're given past exams to study for the midterms as well so if you actually try you shouldn't have a problem getting an A
Chem is hard but somehow Dr. Garner manages to teach the material in such a way that it becomes second nature for the exams. Very caring and memorized everyones names in an entire lecture hall. Gives tons of materials for tests and makes sure you are prepared. If tou are taking Chem 110B you would be making a mistake to not take it with Dr. Garner.
Dr. Garner is a wonderful professor, he explains concepts extremely well and it is evident he cares about his students. The class is extremely hard by nature and he understands this which is why he offers so much extra credit (5% in total I think). If you are struggling definitely attend his office hours, it will help. I would 100% him again.
I took his class this past semester and I can easily say he is one of the best professors I have had. He provides lots of resources and in the times I have emailed him or spoke with him he has been very kind and helpful. Chem 110B is somewhat of a hard class and he made it a little easier by being a great professor.
The Lectures contain all the information you need to succeed and Garner explains the content at its most fundamental level and does not over complicate anything. He provides lots of opportunities to study and to complete extra credit. Take advantage of everything and you will do great.
He is a very nice person and his lectures are not boring. However, I don't think he helps you prepare enough for the final exam. The content he taught leading up to the final exam wasn't enough to prepare students for the difficulty. I believe that the course was hard within itself, but you can find other professors who teach the material better.
Way too reliant on tophat for the lectures. He does not explain the content of the lecture very much, he just briefly glazes over it and immediately starts giving tophat questions all class long. Otherwise, a nice and approachable guy.
This class was very difficult just in general but Dr. Garner may be the best professor I've ever had. Such an amazing guy who cares a lot about everyone and actually learns students names in a 300 person lecture which says a lot. Great teaching style and easy to understand. Good resources in the class but chem 112 is just hard.
Dr. Garner is probably one of the best chemistry professors you'll find here at Penn State. Despite the large class size, he is very quick with responding to emails and will take his time with his students. He provides so many resources. As a person who struggles with chemistry, this is the best I've done in a chemistry course. If you can, get him!
Wonderful professor and human. Literally went out of my way to make sure I had him for 112B. He's really smart and clearly wants you to succeed. His office hours are very valuable and he has a great instructional team. Simplifies what is still a really tough course!
Super genuine and caring professer. He goes through the effort of learning the names of almost everyone in his several 300 person lecture halls. goes in depth on the slides and does a good job of explaining the depth. class is hard but has a TON of resources to do well. Case study is a free 100%. 15ish hours of studying per exam, but got 90%+ per
super nice and funny teacher. his lectures were all great and decently interesting given it was a lecture. id say he was the best of the teachers in chem 110. his canvas is beautifully made and insanely organized. overall, he's a super good teacher and nice person. he made an effort to to try to learn everyone's name in a 300 person lecture
I loved Dr. Garner. This class is very hard in general but he made these hard topics really easy to understand. He gives lots of extra credit and the case study is free points. He is very nice and tried to learn almost everyones name in a 300 person lecture. If you are taking the 110b version take it with him you will not regret it.
Dr. Garner is the best professor I have been In a class with. His class is difficult, and it is very easy to fail, but he is so good at his job it would be an insult to him if you do. He gives a lot of extra credit, drops your lowest test grade, and gives you multiple opportunities to get your grade back up. He also makes sure you learn.
Professor Garner cared about every single person in the huge lecture hall. He made an attempt to memorize everyone's name. The class itself is moderately challenging, with three exams and a case study that brought up grades. There is lots of extra credit that makes this class super manageable.
