Philosophy sucks but Prof. Garrett is so hilarious!!
So funny! Makes philosophy bearable. Wears cool clothes.
One of the most enjoyable professors i've ever had
nice guy, pretty clear, and always available to help if you need it
Best professor I've had. HILARIOUS!!! Makes the material interesting and sticks.
Hated the material, loved the professor
He made me a philosophy major. Be prepared to think and analyze.
funny guy, relates material to real world, presents material clearly

I feel like I'm in a cheap hotel room. - Garrett, on noises from next door.
Hysterical....ask him about the ardor of new enthusiasm and the Wu-Tang at 2am
he can really relate concepts, funny guy
Prof. Garrett is madd funny. He definitely knows his stuff and makes class fun.
Great attitude, accessible examples, funny and smart. TF's aren't much fun

Great sense of humor, sometimes I'm not sure he means to be that funny.
Greatest man at BU.
Makes everything interesting. Explains complicated material in an easy to understand way. Makes class funny and appreciates students and their questions. Great guy.
great teacher, though many mishaps with laptop connection.
Garrett is a very, very funny guy. If he were able to explain philosophy like he can tell a joke or come up with a one-liner then the class would've been great...as a comedian he's a 5, as a teacher, he's a 3.5 at best
madly in love with the man, sooo funny and nice, eager to help, grades harder than expected from his easy going nature but classes are very enjoyable. i heart garret.
Garrett himself is an awesome guy...visit him during his office hours -- you'll be glad you did. Too bad his TF's are somewhat dickish. It may just be the subject matter, but it seems impossible to get above an A- on anything.
garrett is a nice, funny, humble man, but his TFs ruined it for me. counts as COM req. make sure you enjoy old ethical texts and arbitrary applications - ur forced to think like the authors. must be on time for lectures. up close his head is large.
Made an otherwise boring class interesting, definitly take philosophy requirements from this guy.
Garrett is awesome! He has the most hysterical examples but it makes the material extremely clear. He accepts questions at all times and is fair in grading. Take notes and study and youll do very well.
TF's blew, but professor is awesome! Funny guy, great lectures, listens to questions, takes student opinions seriously. Definately visit office hours before essays to make sure you know what you're talking about!
Funny, engaging and always willing to help, I'd call Garrett the greatest man on the planet if he didn't have a habit of picking HORRIBLE TFs. Go to lecture to clarify what happened in discussion; speak to him about papers and exams rather than the TFs.
what an AMAZING guy. nicest prof, very interesting, very entertaining class, did his best to make philosophy fun, but TFs sucked.
Lectures got boring, but he is extremely funny. The TFs were awful. Not that hard of a class, 2 papers/midterm/final. Daily quizzes for attendance suck. A very funny and very interesting man, though - he makes it all fun.
Philosophy is boring. Garrett is funny. Thats all there is to it. He made the class bearable
Garrett is an awesome professor. He is very intelligent and also very humorous. Adds so much to a class that is so boring. Take the class simply for Garrett, however all grades will be scaled down.
TF's destroyed my grade, Garrett is funny & nice about re-scheduling if necessary. Expect a B- or C+. Bring a crossword if you have a short attention span &/or hate directionless philosophical theories and banter. Best guy for COM req.
Garrett is great. Totally cool and extremely funny. Sometimes we get sidetracked along students tangents, but he blames that on himself. Reading includes Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz. Papers are not that hard, he's helpful if you need it. Sometimes he forgets to answer emails though. Take him!
Garrett is awesome.
If you understand philosophy/ethics, very easy class. If you don't, still not too bad and Garrett is hilarious. To get a req. done, take him for sure.
I have never met a more disagreeable and condescending TF. Only one person got an A- on the first paper. OUT OF EIGHTY STUDENTS!!! The grading was way too comparative and subjective.
this class is possibly the worst class ever, but garrett makes it somewhat bareable...my tf was very good at explaining everything, so that helped me throughout; however, the grading was quite subjective. lectures are hilarious, if you have to take a philosophy, take one with this guy, napoleon won't let you down
Aaron Garrett is the best professer at BU.
Garrett is a ball of fun, really. Though he tended to dominate discussion, he did so well, explaining concepts clearly and often humorously. I do wish we had analyzed the texts more, instead of just chatting about them abstractly. As for the two or three lectures he gave, they were excellent.
I'm not a fan of philosophy in general, but Garrett made this an interesting and enjoyable class. Take it if you need to fulfill a philosophy credit
Garrett is a great professor- he's really interested in teaching and does a good job getting students interested. I think bc he's so into it, he gets overzealous and assigns too much reading and attempts too much material. The essays are graded too harshly for a 100 level. Overall though I enjoyed the class.
Good professor who lectures well. Overall very enjoyable class. The only downfall is that Garrett never reads any papers or exams...he lets the TFs grade EVERYTHING and they tend to be pretty harsh graders.
The books are very interesting but the lectures can be tedious. Attendance is mandatory. TFs grade everything and are very harsh graders. Class isn't that hard if you do the reading. Decent class if you need to take it for your philosophy requirement. Just be prepared to read a lot. Two papers and two tests for the semester along with daily quiz
Professor Garrett is one of the best professors i've had BY FAR. If you're willing to do the reading and participate, it is a very rewarding class and you'll get a decent grade. He will actually remember your name if you speak up in lectures - something that can't be said for a lot of professors at BU!
The best professor I have had at BU. The course material is interesting, but Garrett makes lectures funny and dynamic. He's helpful and approachable; if you're having trouble with the material or a paper he is more than willing to help you in office hours. Speaking up in lecture will earn you extra points!
What an amazing professor. Discussions were always dynamic and elucidating, and he clearly loves the material. I would recommend his classes to anyone.
Beware of Garrett. He is a nice guy, but don't forget the task at hand-getting an A. Lectures can be very entertaining. The class might seem real easy, but the papers are graded harshly. He might joke around and make it seem that doing the readings isn't important-IT IS!!!!!Participate in lectures and have your TF proof-read your papers!
Garrett is the BEST teacher I've had thus far. He makes lectures and material very interesting although some of the actual reading is dry. There are only 2 papers midterm and final though so pay attention to your grade.
Best professor I have ever had at BU! Talk to your TF about papers before you write them because they will ultimately decide your grade (they are really nice though)
Prof. Garrett is SO AMAZING! He really knows his stuff (he went to UCHIC for goodness sake!) and he loves to teach. He gets to know names of people in class even in huge lectures. Plus, he's a fine piece of real estate and easy on the eyes. ;)
a great teacher! he is an amazing teacher who knows his material and makes philosophy funny. i loved going to his class every time because i just enjoyed it. he is very good and making students participate. :)
Took his class as an honors seminar. He makes class very funny/interesting and has a great sense of humor. Very clear when he makes arguments and very friendly/willing to help you in office hours. However, I think he is a bit harsh in grading the papers -- this class was mostly freshmen who had never taken philosophy before.
Great subject and class although the reading is substantial and dry. There are two papers and a take home midterm and then the final. Pay attention to your grade and stay away if you dislike reading lots of material quickly.
I took this class for my humanities credit and wasn't sure if I had picked the right one but I absolutely loved this class. There isn't too much reading but if you miss a few you'll find yourself way behind. We don't read entire books just parts of them. No Exams just 2 papers, one midterm and a final. He made me very interested in philosophy!!!
I've learned I hate philosophy. HOWEVER, he makes it much more bearable for those who have to take a philosophy requirement. He's funny and engaging. He posts all of his lectures online. He's laid back, and does his best to make the class encouraging.
This was his first time teaching this class (Ph&Film), so I'm sure it'll improve, but it was unbearable for someone without any philosophy background. The readings were hard and dry. Thankfully Garrett is very helpful (albeit confusing sometimes) and the assignments were very simple. He also puts all lecture notes online, which helps for the final.
Took Modern Philosophy last spring, great class, very deep understanding of not just the philosophies but the philosophers themselves. Excellent discourses on Descartes and Spinoza.
Hands down the most interesting class and the best professor I have had at BU. Also, Professor Garrett is often hilarious.
Professor Garrett is great and hilarious. He knows nobody is that interested in his strange old Portuguese films, so he is able to poke fun at himself. The class is a bit difficult for someone uninterested in philosophy. Although rough, DO THE READINGS and take notes in lecture. He explains clearly. It'll pay off for the final! Trust me.
Professor Garrett is the best professor I've had at BU. He's hilarious, engaging, and very clear about expectations for assignments. I loved his Philosophy and Film course.
the guy is clearly crazy. he likes this movie that is just a blue screen and 17 hours long. apparently his ta's have both watched it... seriously? he also makes u read emma and compare it to clueless which is a bad combination for any guy that doesn't like chic flicks or jane austen (90% of dudes?)
Professor Garrett's philosophy and film course taught me never to take a philosophy course again. That being said, I did put very little effort into this course and still got a B+. If you have an interest in philosophy, though, I strongly recommend this course, he's a cool guy and you may find the subjects he covers interesting.
Professor Garrett is very interesting to listen to and definitely knows about his topics. Make sure to do the readings, as they help a lot with the papers and the final. I didn't do a lot of them until the end and found it difficult to catch up, but possible. Papers are short and not too difficult. Would take this class again, really enjoyed it
He's a great guy, with an awesome voice. I only wish he wasn't so bipolar. If you get him in a good mood, everything's great, but if not, watch out.
Lectures and material are pretty entertaining and engaging. Pretty easy class.
This class is not hard but you will NOT only enjoy unless you are a film major or interested in art films. It is a very niche specific class and the professor makes references to obscure movies. The assigned movies are all foreign, long and hard too watch. The professor is really good but if you don't like the subject it will be an annoying class
Garrett is a cool guy, but his lectures are not for everyone. Doesn't really seem like an intro class, but instead is targeted for a very niche audience, and the selected films are extremely obscure. Lectures have very little structure and often don't even mention the assigned movies. Grade based mostly on short papers and easy pop quizzes.
As a film major, I have to say Garrett and his taste are incredibly cool. His class is way worth taken than any com's regular film classes. His inspirational and humorous lectures kept/encouraged my film passion/career. (I'm a fan of art films tho) Tips: you need to read some for the essays.
Professor Garret is one of the best philosophy professors at BU! The class is very interesting and he clearly explains the concepts. Always available outside of class - would strongly recommend going to office hours! Overall - a great professor and very nice person!
This mans is literally an icon. Funny, approachable, understanding and fair, respects students who don't wanna speak during class. Grades really fairly but still makes the class challenging. Literal icon. If you can take his class, take his class. In anything. A wonderful dude.
Best class in my freshman year! Highly rec going to his office hour to engage in a meaningful and intellectual convo, you will get more than just what u get in class. Personally growing up studying Chinese philosophy, so this class served as a great class to get exposed to western phil thinking. It's much diff from the east and i very much enjoyed
He's a really funny, easy going professor. There are not a lot of assignments, just a midterm and final and three short papers and it is all pretty easy as long as you do the readings and watch the movies. He is great at explaining things and is entertaining so def go to lecture. His dog Creampuff is very cute too.
Solid professor. PH310 doesn't have the most engaging material of all the philosophy courses, but he makes it worth it. I'd do the readings on time, that would make the class much easier.
Professor Garrett is awesome! He's nice, cool, and friendly. The class itself was pretty good, but I didn't enjoy some of his readings, particularly Immanuel Kant. Other than that, I would recommend anyone to take his class!
Professor Garrett was amazing! I was vey nervous taking a PHIL class but he made everything a bit easier! I'm a film major so his lectures were extremely helpful and interesting. If you're interested in film (especially art films) def take his class. He's such great guy. Also his dog Creampuff is super cute.
2 Papers + 2 Exams. There is super heavy reading that some are dry and some are bearable. Movies were okay to watch, some were interesting, some were meh.. Lectures + discussions are your only chance to understand what the readings were about. Don't skip those. Tests weren't too bad but pay attention to movie (some questions were on that).
He is kind and caring, but a little bit unclear about the exams. You shouldn't expect any practice exams. Readings are a lot but the class discussions are hilarious. Not much assignments. Participation can help improve your grade at the end, but not too much.
I fell asleep nearly every class for at least 10 min! But it was easy to get through with an A if you just study smart. I skipped nearly all the readings and used my discussion class to learn the material. Two or three movies I didnt have time to watch either but I made it! Know your material well though, he asks about everything on exams.
You have to attend every lecture, attendance is taken, which is annoying but I understand why they're mandatory. The lectures aren't recorded so be there because examples are gone over only in class verbally but not on the slides. Have to watch a film a week which is nice for homework but some are 2 hour art films. Great professor, nice cadence!
Personally, I found his lectures extremely boring and hard to follow. His lecture slides are basically just quotes pulled from the readings that barely make sense. His voice was monotone and hard to stay engaged. However, it is not a difficult course if you put in the work and study. He does count attendance, but I think you can miss up to 3 class.
Overall pretty good professor. You don't have to do the absurd amount of readings that he assigns because he will only ever quiz on lecture material. That being said, lectures can sometimes get pretty boring, and he can ramble on for quite a while sometimes. Midterms were pretty difficult. TAs grade assignments, so be nice to them!
Prof Garrett is nice and his assignments/tests are pretty easy. There's a good bit of reading but honestly if you pay attention in class and skim the readings you'll be fine. Flexible and understanding. The TA grades assignments so the quality of feedback depends on who your TA is. Took this class to explore philosophy (learned it's not my thing)
Loved Prof Garrett, his lectures were super interesting, he was very witty, and could explain a range of complex topics accurately and relatively simply.
Prof. Garrett is amazing!! By far my favorite professor I've had so far.
