Learn the book because you're going to have to teach yourself, take the Pre-test on JExam to know whats going to be on the test because he doesn't teach it or if he does its hard to understand. Don't ask questions b/c he rarely will answer them in class.
He's not that bad (Especially if you've had some form of pre-cal or Calculus in the past). When he gives the study session on Sundays around 5:00, you should definitely attend b/c they were very helpful to me. I'm getting an A in the class - grades on tests - 94(skills test), 98, 100, 88, 100, 98
Geeze. The other posters must hold a SERIOUS grudge, because Gentry is probably one of the more clear teachers in the department. He goes through every step. He is a very fair grader and has a good sense of humor as well. I've never been a math person at all, but i had no problem in his class.
Aaron Gentry is a great teacher. You are required to do work, God forbid, but he's always willing to help you.He makes himself available to anyone, you just have to ask.He tends to go run around the subject, but he eventually gets to the point. He's very enthusiastic and passionate about his work, actually very funny if you let him be.Aaron is great.
I took a class at a different school. He is very easy to look at! But doesn't explain very well if you are not that great at math in the first place. Pretty easy grading wise though.
Only half of what he teaches is on the test. The other half is either a mixture of things that have been taught and new stuff or only new questions that haven't been exposed to the students yet. A lot of questions he is asked, he is unable to explain how he arrived at the answer or confused as to what the answer is. Everything's online.
Gentry is not a bad teacher, but he only really goes over about half the material that will be on the exam. He's very helpful and willing to answer all your questions, you just have to make sure you go the extra mile to know everything for the tests.
Pretty solid teacher. Just go to class, do your homework, and you'll be fine. Pretty good at explaining things and is willing to work through something if you don't get it. If you do well in the class and don't need his help, he's cool with that too and kinda just lets you do your own thing. His tests can be harder than his work but it's not bad.
Gentry might get a bad rap on here, but he shouldn't. He's a really good teacher and does a great job explaining the really difficult problems you might see on the test ahead of time. He's goofy too, it's like your dad teaching a class. Overall if you're taking precalc, this is the guy to get.
Tests are very tough and a lot of material is covered for each test but the tests are only 12 questions long.
Gentry is a good teacher who very obviously knows the material. He is able to answer any questions you may have but he moves very quickly through the material. Go to office hours, they are an excellent opportunity to ask questions about homework or web quizzes. Tests are pretty hard.
Gentry is SO helpful. Answers questions, holds review sessions, extends office hours for students. Almost everything is controlled by the math department (tests, material covered, grades, etc.) so he doesn't have much say in any of that. Be prepared to work hard (bc precalc) but Gentry is GREAT--knows his stuff and makes sure students understand.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. Pre calc is hard but he makes it easy. He goes over the basics in depth so you will understand the harder stuff. He tends to jump around a bit in lecture but other than that his class is great. If you show up to class, in class quiz grades are an easy 100
He seems like a great guy but not a great professor. He makes the class way harder than it needs to be. His lectures are extremely confusing, and he runs in circles when trying to teach. (not literally) It's very frustrating. There are lots of quizzes for homework each unit. Tests were pretty easy but I think that's bc half the class was failing.
Professor Gentry is a very laid-back and friendly teacher. He does a very good job taking his time explaining stuff. While the course does move relatively quickly, if you listen and do the homework, you should be fine. What he teaches in class is what's on the test. Would definitely recommend, I'm not a math person and loved this class!
Gentry is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He makes easy material far harder than it has to be and is awful at explaining. His homework is relatively easy but he grades for correctness not completion. Each test has a few random questions that you've never seen in lectures or homework. You will get a good grade but You will be miserable.
It was required math, so not too bad, but not easy for non-math people. You do not need the book, and will have to work on your own to figure some things out. Tests aren't too hard, but they count for a lot. He was nice, and was willing to explain things and answer questions.
The only professor I have ever had that has absolutely no idea what he is doing. It is honestly more confusing for me to go to class and attempt to understand him "teaching" rather than just teaching myself. Would 10/10 not recommend or take any of his classes again
Aaron gets a bad review because he's waaaaaay too smart to be teaching this class. He's a very sweet man who makes dad jokes and explains concepts well and listens to questions and goes out of his way to help. The homework is a lot but it's the same amount of any other math class. I would take him again.
Professor Gentry is the sweetest man. He's incredibly smart, so some of his lessons WILL go over your head, regardless of what year you are or how closely you're paying attention. He's always available outside of class and if you just listen and reread his lecture PowerPoints, it's not a hard class to get a good grade in.
Do. Not. Take. This. Class. One of the most irresponsible professors I have ever had. He confuses himself in class which leaves the students completely lost as to how to do the homework/ quizzes/ prepare for tests. I was more confused going to class than I was the days I skipped. If you are forced to take this class, be prepared to be frustrated.
Not great, but not super hard. If you have another option, I wouldn't recommend. It's so hard to pay attention because he rambles and the class drags on forever. You honestly don't have to show up. You have 10 hw sets per unit and a test after that, and if you do the hw on your own you should be fine. The tests are just like the reviews.
A chill guy that does what he can to get you to understand. A lot of HW but it's all online and posted at the beginning of a unit so do it when you want (HW's are harder than the tests though.) Just 1 group project, very simple with his provided example. It's stuff you learned in high school, but skipping is a bad idea. We NEVER used the book.
Not a bad professor, but his lectures definitely feel like they are ten hours long. Definitely attend the Sunday night test reviews!! There is an easy group project at the end of the semester that is a nice grade booster. He also replaces your lowest test grade if the grade you receive on the final is higher (it won't hurt you if you did lower).
He is a v nice guy who makes frequent dad jokes. No pop quizzes, rarely takes attendance, 5 total tests, 1 group project at the end, and lots of homework. He rarely finishes example problems, and he often messes up in examples/notes-- confusing the class. If you are good at math and can teach it to yourself, you'll be fine. If not.. steer clear!!!
Gentry is a really cool teacher. I think he is WAY too smart to teach this course, which can lead to lecture being a little confusing sometimes. He ends up always making sense or clearing confusion the next class. It's important to go to class because his slides don't typically have steps or too much explanation. He's always available to help, too!
Professor Gentry is a really nice guy. People complain because they don't put forth the effort to do well in the class. He gives online quizzes that you can take as many times as you like for practice. Study and work out problems, and you will easily get an A on his tests. I complained until I actually started to try. Go to class and you'll do fine
I enjoyed this math class. It's an entry level class so its not challenging, but you have to take it seriously or else it will be very challenging. Tests are fair, and the practice homework problems are a lot of help. He also makes a study guide for every test so that's awesome.
Pay attention in class and show up if you want to do well, or this easy class becomes a nightmare really fast. He is happy to help during office hours and genuinely cares if you understand, really nice guy. Don't buy the textbook. A LOT of homework. Tests are easy if you keep up with the class, he gives one project to help boost grades at the end.
Gentry was a bit of a bland lecturer and isn't always clear with what he is saying, however, his class isn't anything ridiculous. Just know that he doesn't round grades. I got a 92.88 in the class and a 98 on the final and he did not round my grade up to an A (93). He's a bit picky in that sense, just be weary.
Gentry is such a nice guy and is always willing to help outside of class during his office hours, but thats about where the pros end. He often spends an entire class working out 1 problem, getting it wrong, then scrambling during the last 5 minutes of class to correct himself. He insists on teaching his "own way" which is usually wrong and confusing.
Such a sweet guy and always willing to help you in and outside of class. He sometimes gets confused while teaching(like others said he's too smart to be teaching the class and can trip himself up)but easily the most helpful and laidback professor I've ever had. Homework is a lot, but if you complete it and the practice tests the exams are a breeze.
Though it could have been very difficult considering the workload of the course, its because of his teaching that I was able to thrive and help a few of my classmates. Theres a lot of homework online but as long as you stay on track, show up to class, and ask questions, you should be ok. Im NOT a math guy and I ended with an A-because of Gentry.
Prof. Gentry is a very nice man and is always willing to help students during his office hours, but being a nice man doesn't equate to being a good professor. His lecture style was very dry and he often confused himself while teaching, which frustrated students (as you may imagine). He makes material way harder to understand than it should be.
It was easy but Gentry makes the lectures very boring and it's often hard to sit through this class. It's like high school math and Gentry was nice enough but often times he didn't know what he was teaching and would make many mistakes. Its not very hard but he doesn't really teach anything so if you don't know it you have to teach yourself.
He's a good guy who tries to be funny and make class interesting, but lectures are boring, with him confusing students and himself. He makes things harder than they really are, so I found myself teaching myself outside of class. It's an easy class with easy content (but lots of hw), so don't have him if math is a bad subject for you.
Gentry is a super nice guy and he makes time for office hours to help out his students, but if you're like me, one student uses all office hours & so you can never go. He often gets confused because he is too smart for this class. The tests are equal difficulty to the online quizzes but they are only 14 questions, making each worth a lot of points
Although this teacher was sweet, he just honestly didn't really know how to convey the material to us. This was supposed to be an easy class, and the content was easy, but I went to class every week and still had to basically teach myself through online work. Lots of homework quizzes, he replaces lowest test grade with final exam grade.
Amazing. Great teacher and very approachable. Good at lecturing for a 1000 level class and tests were based off material in the lectures. Responded very quickly to email about homework questions and would let us stay after class to help as well. Highly recommend taking this class
Wasn't really sure what to expect at first when I took his class, but I feel like he has done a very good job of conveying the information taught in class. He always shows the proofs behind mathematical concepts so that you understand why things work the way that they do in calculus. A little scatterbrained at times but gets to the point well.
Gentry is a nice enough guy who tries to tell jokes to make lectures more fun but everyone is bored out of their mind during class. Gentry is terrible at explaining things so his teaching style is to do the problem in his calculator and writes random notes in illegible handwriting. You have to learn outside of class in lecture slides he didnt make
Mr. Gentry does not seem to care about his students at all. When I came to his office hours he seemed annoyed. When I emailed him a three-paragraph email concerned about my test grade, he emailed back one sentence. His lectures are difficult to pay attention to and he goes way too fast. Do not take his class.
Personally, I am very bad at math and withdrew from this class with a different professor a year ago. Mr. Gentry was very helpful and clear, though. He took time in class to go over any questions that anyone had and never dismissed anyone's needs. He explained everything in class and even moved some hw due dates back when we didn't understand yet.
I struggle a lot with math but Gentry is a really clear and concise professor who is really helpful and open to any questions (no matter how dumb which most of mine were)! I haven't scored an A in a math class in 4 years but he really wants his students to succeed and is helpful in teaching and also provides hw & projects to help boost your grade!
This class was basically a how-to of a TI-83. It was pretty easy, the lectures were mostly useless after he introduced a topic because he just talked in circles about it. There was at least 3 homework assignments a week. If you did good on the homework the tests were easy. The group project was super easy and required minimal working together.
Mr. Gentry is one of the best professors I have been taught by. This class is very basic math in which everything is done by the calculator. Multiple HW assignments each week so that's the toughest thing to keep up with but its extremely helpful with the course. Aaron is extremely funny (in a different way) and he wants everybody to succeed.
Prof Gentry is an amazing professor who makes math incredibly easy. He lectures quite quickly, but is always willing to go back and review if you are having issues. Lots of homework but you have unlimited submissions and they really help to prepare for the test.
I'm definitely not a math person, but Gentry explained the concepts pretty clearly and concisely. The class itself is easy, but you still need to study for the exams. Definitely go to his office hours to review - he hints at a lot of questions/concepts that will appear on the exam. Overall a solid professor
This class is without a doubt NOT intro into math. I took this class thinking it'd be an easy math class, but no. It consists of physics, chemistry, statistics, algebra, and calculus all in one. the professor is boring to listen to and never responds to my emails. almost every classmate I've talked to says they failed all the tests all well.
Professor Gentry is very straightforward and is accessible outside of class if you need him. He makes sure everyone understands before he moves on and is a great professor. I appreciated him a lot this semester. Lectures were on ELC due to COVID but still had zoom meetings and office hours available for questions. Highly recommend! Great guy.
I'm not a math person, but this class was super straight forward and relatively easy. The class is pretty much all about doing math on the calculator and everything over the course of the semester pretty much just builds off the unit before. Mr. Gentry is super nice and helpful at answering questions but class could get kinda boring sometimes.
This class was the hardest class I have taken during my college experience. I took MATH 1113 with Mr. Gentry because he was recommended to me. However, I wish that I would have chosen a different professor to take the class with. I struggled throughout the semester. I added a co-enroll course and a tutor. Both made me feel less stupid.
Professor Gentry honestly seemed like a nice person and was willing to help you if you didn't understand something. The class is confusing and it's hard to do well on tests. Sometimes he would spend a class doing a problem and then realize he did it wrong at the end of the class. He is willing to push back tests if students aren't prepared enough.
Mr. Gentry was very nice to his students. He was always willing to help and even push back homework or test dates if needed be. However, the class was extremely hard, and Mr. Gentry even struggled to understand the concepts at time. I got a B in the class, but I put hours and hours and hours in studying, so seemed not to really pay off.
Professor Gentry is AWFUL. awful. He is disorganized and terrible at answering students' questions. He only confuses us more. As someone who struggles with math, this class frustrates me to no end. I managed to get an A in AP Calculus my senior year in highschool and this class is almost worse. The "homework" is practically useless. STAY AWAY.
If you miss one day of this class you are screwed. He goes over so much material per lecture period you must attend every class. He give lots of homework quizzes that take up a lot of time and have nothing to do with the exams. Exams are extremely hard and 50% of your grade. Doesn't really answers questions in class because "we don't have time".
Professor Gentry's class is super straightforward. The way Math 1101 was set up is that you have three tests, one project, and multiple homework quizzes, which you have three attempts on. He also gives tons of online resources. The tests are not super easy but if you study you can forsure get an A.
Gentry does not know how to teach all types of students. He simply reads off powerpoint slides and does not walk through how to solve problems and use calculator functions. If you can see something and understand you will be fine, but if you need an in depth understanding do not take him. The tests are very hard and are a large portion of grades.
Do not choose this guy, if you miss any class you fall so far behind. Everything that you do is on the calculator so its all memorization of the calculator not actual math. Ive taken ap statistics and had a 105 in that class and this class is 10x harder. If you are reading this choose a different guy. He is such a nice dude but not a good teacher
Mr. Gentry is genuinely a good person, but his teaching style is not the best. He moves at such a fast-pace, easily confuses himself, and quite unorganized. Homework, quizzes, and tests are virtual w/ LockDown browser. No extra extra credit and no curves. Very understanding of sickness/personal issues. Attendance isn't mandatory, but GO.
Professor Gentry is super nice and is more than willing to help you outside of class if you don't understand the material. If you skip class, you will struggle but I don't think it's too hard. Just make sure to do your homework and the reviews and pay attention to lectures
Do not take him!!!!! he is such a bad professor and teaches too fast. Some of the contents on the test aren't even taught!! I would not recommend.
He knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't know how to teach it. The tests take up most of your grade, so if you do bad on one, you might as well drop the class. The homeworks sort of help for the tests, but honestly, he just confuses you with everything anyway. It's so hard to understand math through this man's eyes.
Mr. Gentry is a nice person and cares about his students and their success. BUT, Mr. Gentry does not know how to teach students the information necessary to succeed in this class and easily gets confused. The class average was a 50 on one test and he only gave a 10 point curve. DO NOT take this class unless you have excellent precalculus knowledge.
I honestly found his way of teaching super confusing and he always made mistakes, making it even more confusing. His homework quizzes were difficult and different than his examples in class (unlimited attempts though), and his tests were so hard. But I've never been great at math. He did upload lecture slides and recordings on ELC though.
Mr. Gentry is one of the most caring professors. Whether you like his class depends on your learning style. The majority of work was completed outside of class on ALEKS (with multiple tries on assignments), and problems were practiced in class. The tests arent bady if you study (mostly formulas) and he is generous with partial credit.
Professor Gentry is a super nice guy. He often makes silly errors while completing problems, but he is still decent. He isn't the best at explaining concepts. If you have half decent prior precalculus knowledge you will be fine. His tests are not hard in my opinion. He posts 2 practice tests for each test. Lots of partial credits. Easy quizzes.
He moves quickly.
Honestly, he's a nice guy and I enjoy his lectures. The way he teaches can be hard to follow though. We get to the end of the unit and I feel like I haven't really learned anything. He'll give you study guides, unlimited homework attempts, and upload examples videos though.
Professor Gentry was kind, but he seemed like he had no clue what he was doing the whole semester. He would teach us something and then later tell us he taught it wrong. He also has a ton of quizzes due each week. He was always willing to help but every time I showed up to his office hours he was never there.
Professor Gentry is an ok professor. Class extremely boring -like literally falling asleep. He does a lot of excess talking during lectures and makes mistakes. He is accessible outside of class and has office hours. Does not round up grades. If you know what you're doing, he is fine. However, I am bad at math so harder for me. Online tests w/ lock.
very knowledgeable in this subject, but does not know how to teach it very well. as long as you attempt to do well in the class, you should. the math department is not the best out there.
I genuinely thought professor Gentry was a case study. I have never had an instructor so unorganized and confused. He would often backtrack and forget what he was teaching. He never came prepared to class and was very confusing. I ended up watching his youtube videos and teaching the material to myself.
Professor Gentry was mid at best. He would come very unprepared to every single class period and I would often leave more confused than when I came in. The one good thing he did was give extra/partial credit on exams and quizzes. Overall, he was very nice and cared for what his students have to say, but he struggled to throughly explain the course.
Was late most days and especially on test days.
Professor Gentry's instruction is incredibly unclear and difficult to follow. His power point notes are very basic and provide little to no actual instruction, only definitions and answers with no traceable work. His practice problems are slap-dashed together and he often has not worked them out himself before giving them to students. no thx
This class was very hard to follow. Often came to class unprepared for lectures and was very hard to follow. 4 total tests, a couple group work assignments, and attendance make up your grade.
I think Aaron Gentry is a great man. He's pretty funny. That being said, he tends to confuse himself at times and go on tangents. He once spent 60 minutes of our 75 minute class reviewing a singular subject for him to go "But don't worry about that, it won't be on the test." The last 15 minutes of class were spent on reviewing actual test material.
He is nice but a horrible teacher. He was never prepared for class, often arriving late and not even being familiar with the material he was supposed to be teaching. He would regularly make mistakes while trying to solve problems in front of the class, confusing both himself & students. He curved tests but there was no remediation. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Class is very test heavy. Your entire grade is pretty much based on attendance and the 4 tests you take. The lectures can be long but it is important to pay attention. He doesn't give any homework, which can be nice, but then you have no practice for the content you are learning.
He was unprepared for every class and seemed that he was learning the material at the same time as us. There were multiple times he was corrected by students for errors and constantly seemed to not be organized. He is a complete mess and I do not recommend taking his class.
Aaron Gentry was a super cool teacher. He seemed very genuine and personable. Test count for 68% of the grade but the final replaces one of the 3 regular exams. Anyone who complained weren't willing to put a little time into this class. He does seems a little unorganized at times but he post all the slides at the beginning of each unit. GOAT
Somehow my original post was removed. Professor Gentry was consistently late and extremely unprepared. He often would make mistakes and then confuse himself and students further. His class is test heavy and mainly based on attendance and tests. Tests are extremely difficult. Most of the class struggled -- even after collaborating to study.
Gentry's a great professor for MATH 1101! It's obvious that he cares about his student's and their success. Unlike the other ratings, he was always prepped for classes, easy to contact and gladly went over any questions or reviews when asked. Attendance is mandatory but is "extra credit" for going. HW, tests, and project % are well balanced.
Look, Pre cal is hard at UGA. If you have to take it, I wouldn't avoid Mr. Gentry. Quizzes every class but they are simple and relatively easy. Drops lowest 4 quizzes. 20% completion grade homework, and 3 tests and a final. Gave extra credit on one test. Honestly, he is nice and if you study you can do just fine. I personally thought he was good.
Super super nice guy, just not the best at teaching. He makes mistakes and gets flustered easily, but the class is totally doable if you devote some time outside of it to study and figure stuff out. really nice about extending deadlines and helping out students
It was a flipped classroom which was a hard adjustment, but Gentry was lenient on grading and understanding. ALEKS and preclass assignments were time consuming but did help cushion grades better. Compared to other professors, Gentry had better reviews, he was good but unorganized.
He's a cool guy but bad teacher. The content in the course isn't that bad but his lack of communication and organization makes it more difficult. He will send emails at 10 pm the night before class to say we have hw or a quiz the next day that he never told us about. This made the course more stressful than it had to be.
DO NOT TAKE!! He never knows what's going on in his classes and gives quizzes every week over a question he went over one time the class before. Never mentions what will be on the quiz so you study 40 questions for a 3 question quiz. Sometimes doesn't tell you you have one until 10 pm the night before. Also gets corrected on his math by students.
Go to class. Half of peoples problems would be solved if they went. If you can't make it for a legit reason just let him know. He is a little all over the place with scheduling and teaching but I think he was a fair teacher who cared for his students. The class material is honestly super easy. He has a textbook but it's not required.
He was an absolute terrible professor. He didn't know what he was doing half of the time and taught 25% of the material WRONG. Constantly corrected by students. His "study guides" were the easiest, and then the test was every complex question in the unit. Heavily stacks tests with the hardest parts of each units.Really hard to talk to and learn from.
I thought this class would be very easy, but Mr. Gentry made it quite difficult. However, if you put time into the class, you should make a good grade. You have to teach yourself the material because Mr. Gentry often gets confused and does not understand the math. This class is niche, so it can be hard to study. He is a nice and caring guy, overall
Some of these reviews make me really sad because I really liked Mr. Gentry! He's a very kind man who has to teach a notoriously difficult class. The past exams that he posts were extremely helpful and he was great at answering my questions. Also make sure to do the ALEKS before every due date because it's a huge grade boost.
He was a super chill guy and gave partial credit. If you study the practice test you will easily get an A on the tests.
He is a very understanding person but kind of hard to hear so I would recommend sitting close to the front. His class structure is pretty much the same every day: he teaches with slides and then gives work to practice what we learned that day.
he's a really chill professor; however, he might be hard to follow or understand sometimes. if you have trouble understanding math i would advise you not to take him.
It's clear he really cares about his students, but he's not great at teaching. He's disorganized and often runs out of time to grade tests, as well as not explaining any theory-- just gives us equations and does a few example problems. If you find math difficult or need more in-depth explanation on what's ACTUALLY happening, find another professor.
Professor Gentry is a fun and caring professor who frequently stops to ensure everyone has a chance to ask questions and understand the material. His classes are often structured in the same simple way, making the topics easier to grasp. I would take his class again.
