Extremely hard in a summer class. Take him in the regular semester because he loads the reading on! Pretty decent guy though.
Expects a TON of reading. Talks the entire class. 7 random pop quizzes, plus 4 tests, and some insufficient amount of points for attendance make up your grade. Teaches to you as if everyone is a history major. Wouldn't recommend him at all, he and his class were extremely monotonous and nearly impossible to sit through at 9am.
good prof, but really hard class. he messes up on little things every once in a while and don't be afraid to call him on it.
he's rough!! prepare to spend all your time on history. jams too much in tests that are expected to be done w/ in an hr. and he kills u w/ all sorts of id's u have to memorize for ur exams covering 5 chapters. but other than that he's a good teacher. just expects ALOT.
Extremely hard class. Too much information crammed into one test. Kind of hard to follow his lectures because he jumps around alot. Thinks everyone in the class is majoring in history. Avoid this teacher if at all possible.
Had him for online class, can tell he does not like them. Not a bad format, lots of reading with timed weekly quizzes usually 1-2 chapters with sometimes a one page paper.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I took his online class and they are timed tests with TOO MUCH information crammed into one test. This guy is such a bad teacher. There is way to much reading and the tests are horrible. Listen to everyone else and DO NOT TAKE HIM! I wish I knew of this website before I took his class!
Yes, his class is challenging, but guess what? You're taking a college class, get used to it. I actually really like the class. The IDs on the tests are a bit difficult, but otherwise I think it's an entertaining course. I guess I'm just a huge history geek. If you are, too, then take Hoffman.
I loved this class and wish I could have an excuse to take more. Although his class was tough, if you work hard you will do well. He lets you know EXACTLY what is expected of you. If you take a long time to take a test this class may not be for you.
Wow!! i loved Dr. Hoffman's classes. i was fortunate enough to take 4 of his courses. there is a significant amount of reading but guess what....ITS COLLEGE!!! i got 2 A's and 2 B's in his classes. He is sooooo knowledgeable in history. he does teach all class but thats why he gets paid. his tests werent bad. ID's not a big deal. GREAT CLASS!!!!
I would not use the word "challenging" to describe his class. It's more like, "agonizingly time consuming". Sorry, but when I take 5 classes a semester, I don't need to be spending most of my time on an elective.
He makes what should be a simple class very difficult. Yes, I understand college comes with a lot of reading, but he takes it to another level. I don't think he understands his class is not the only class we are taking. He does put people down and asks too many questions about the reading. Just cause he is great at history doesn't mean we all are.
As a summer course this was intense, as should be expected in college. This was a whole new experience, every question (100) on the final were straight from the textbook. I don't know about other students but I cannot memorize a 400 page textbook. I would not recommend this if you actually want a lesson on this information, rather than a beating.
This teacher knows what he is talking about but any1 that is not interested in history shouldn't even appempt to take his class He needs to cut down the testing! Told me if I got a C on the final Id have a C for the class I got a C on the final and ended with a D in the class.. Tried to contact him to look at the test and ask ?s he ignored me
This class is not for someone who is a full time student because you have to spend an adequate amount of time reading. It isn't so much the reading that was my problem, his quizzes are based on info in the text book, and they are very difficult (and 1 min per question). BE PREPARED!
I had Mr. Hoffman for US History 1 and 2. The classes were not easy, but I did learn more in them than all my previous history classes combined. Great teacher if you love history. Perhaps choose differently if you simply want an easy A or are totally uninterested in the subject.
This class was hands down THE best history class I have ever taken. I took 3 classes with Dr. Hoffman and yes, be prepared to study (like in ANY college level class!) but you will have such an amazing comprehension of History! He should be teaching at an Ivy Leavue school! CCAC is LUCKY to have him!
do not take his course online!! I am an A student and had to drop out of his course. He expects you to memorize EVERY word in the chapter before you take his test. Uses trick questions also.
This class is greuling. His tests are AWFUL and this is the most time consuming online class ever! You will be disappointed if you take this history class.
Very challenging class, I'm used to recieving high B's and he gave me my first C. I took this class online, he may be different in class but it was definitely the most difficult online class I have taken to date.
Great class. Very happy with the professor and how he went about teaching it. You will get a great perspective on history with Dr. Hoffman teaching. Extremely intelligent guy and very straight forward with you. If you do the work you will get a very good grade in his class. You will be sorry if you do not take one of his classes.
Dr. Hoffman is great! He loves the subject and is genuinely concerned with each student doing their best. He helped me out more than my other profs. Even if you don't like History, he will make it interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Very difficult teacher does not respond to help when I asked multiple times. I have the class online and I must say the hardest online I ever took. Not even half way through the class and I have a low grade from the VERY hard quizzes with only a minute for each q. I recommend not taking this professor !
Excellent Teacher. Dr. Hoffman teaches as a college professor should. He encourages and is clear in his instruction. He does not babysit students, or hand out A's upon good attendance. You need to put the work in if you want a good grade. All CCAC classes need to be taught to this level if students are to actually leave school with an education.
Not a very good professor. Replies with smart remarks, times all quizzes and exams which makes it very stressful. Requires DOUBLE the work of any other professor. Work seems useless and doesn't help to learn the material. Study guides DO NOT help, if anything they make you perform worse on exams.
Not an easy class. He was not very on top of things either. I was always emailing him to remind him of deadlines, which I feel should have warranted some extra credit for me. The timed tests are outrageous, only 90 minutes for 100 questions. He does, however, give lots of opportunities for extra credit which was nice, you will need it! I did learn.
I've taken all his history courses up at ccac, to pass his test you must study!! If you do not study you will not pass his class, it's as simple as that.
Professor Hoffman's class is not impossible, DEFINATLEY knows his stuff and his lectures are so in depth its like your actually at that point in time. Tests are tough especially the written definitions, but extra credit is there and encourages participation, pop quizzes are given but as long as you take good notes you should get a good grade.
I took this as an online class (first mistake) the weekly quiz were easy. The assignments were irritating. Nothing assigned came with came with no less than 6 pages of directions and guidelines to print. For that reason alone I would never take this class again.
I took the online class of Professor Hoffman for history 105 and let me tell you he is the WORST teacher I have ever had, and this is coming from someone who wants to be a history teacher. The answers for his quizzes are not in the reading or study guides. On top of that he took two and a half weeks to respond to an email of mine. He is TERRIBLE!!!
I would not take this class with him. First off he assigns long readings during the week and a timed test every week. Next his test question come from minor topic with in the reading. Lastly there are no notes given on any of the topics.
I started off miserable in this class because I put forth the same effort I did in my other classes that came easy to me. You need to read and take detailed notes in order to pass the online tests which you'll have 1 min a question. He was very helpful when I came to him for extra credit towards the end of the semester. I ended up with an A.
Online class is extremely unorganized. Ask for help on something and somehow i was in the wrong but the classes blackboard is a mess. Does not even have an assignments section! can you say embarrassing!!!
His online class is very poorly organized and his grading methods are incredibly inconsistent particularly regarding the discussion boards. His quizzes focus on incredibly insignificant and tiny details from the chapter. There is simply no way to memorize an entire chapter word for word. I would NOT recommend his online course.
Takes WAY too long to reply to emails and the quizzes are too rushed for the amount of material on them. Overall, hated the class. Wasn't extremely hard but the terrible communication made it an overall stressful and bad experience.
This teacher said I plagiarized by using the same words as someone else. The only two words that i used the same of were on 2 completely different sites. and not even in the same sentence. If you have a 20 ? quiz, you only get 20 mins. meaning: only one minute per question. I wouldn't recommend this class for anyone but a history major.
Expect to read 15 long boring textbook pages every single night. Expect things not discussed in class to be on the test and when he's going over it he will even say we didn't get this in class. Yet its still on the test. Expect to do a civil engagement paper that is like being forced to do community service in high school.
Do NOT take this class! There is an 8:00 deadline for everything. He is unreasonable even with late assignments. He picks the tiniest details from the chapters and puts them on the tests. He does not provide any notes, so it is difficult to determine what to study. He takes a week to respond to emails which is unacceptable for an online class.
I loved Dr. Hoffman. He is so knowledgeable and really cares about what he is teaching. In my opinion the class was not hard, the lectures were interesting. He gave opportunity for extra credit. You do need to read and study. But it is college, and you should be there for that reason. Overall definitely will take another class with him.
Civics papers and typos for due dates in syllabus should be excusable, bet weren't!
hes a very tough teacher. you will basically read the entire textbook by the end of the semester. if you are not a history major, avoid taking his class by any means necessary. by far the hardest college course I've ever taken. exams are long and tough. there is material on the exams that aren't covered in class. good luck if you need this course!!
Does NOT reply to messages, quizzes every week, discussion boards every other week, HIN essays every other week.. 2-3 chaperers a week, hard to follow schedule. TIMED MIDTERMS, FINALS && quizzes. a lot a lot a lot of time it took.
He times our tests and expects us to memorize 2 chapters that are 60 pages or more, he also only gives us a WEEK to do so. If he does not like your topic he will grade you poorly he will also NOT respond to your emails, no matter how confused you are.
Just remember- this is college, not highschool. He is preparing his students for future success in their courses. His grading criteria was clearly laid out at the start of term & he provided ample opportunity for extra credit. I loved his emphasis on correct APA/MLA formatting- I'm starting a BSN program this fall and needed to the refresher.
Hoffman tries to cram every aspect of teaching into this class. Makes you do discussion boards online,in class debates, pop quizzes, 4 large essays on EACH individual test, reading and attendance are mandatory. He tries to do too much for this class which is simply just a class people need to move on to their bachelors. It is truly a nuisance.
really knows the material he is teaching but the tests seemed to be mostly based on the lecture rather than the textbook. pop quizzes nearly every class by the end of the semester. you have to go to class to pass. you have to read the textbook. he offers a lot of extra credit too though. i liked the class overall
I am not one to leave reviews, but this time I felt the need to. The tests are ridiculous and tend to ask VERY specific questions to that are completely irrelevant. Not to mention all of the readings, basically quizzes every class, and having memorize all of the ID's. He does know what he is talking about even though he jumps around. Lots of EC.
this guy is all over the place. i would recommend not taking him. if you have a job, take other courses, or want to have a social life this class is NOT a good choice. makes you take a quiz just to participate in discussion boards. very ignorant, not caring for his students is the nicest way i can describe him.
Great professor. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. Be careful with online quizzes, if there is a tiny break in WiFi you will be disconnected/unable to finish the quiz -- make sure you have wired internet. He does give you an opportunity to retake it once if this does happen, which is very nice. Give your best and you will succeed!
His classes have it all, lots of reading, exams, papers and group work. Can be a difficult class but he is fair and gives you ample time to complete everything. Treats students as adults and will give you the grade you deserve. He is always on schedule and everything is clear in his syllabus. You will learn more history than any other history class
Don't expect an email response from him within a week. the quizzes make no sense. and some questions of Chapter can only find answers in the next Chapter. And some questions, you can not find answers in the textbook.
This was probably one of the hardest classes I ever took and he made it hard for no reason. I was taking this class as an elective and he treats his class like all the students are history majors. He didnt even prepare us for group debates and then was upset when the while class was confused on what to talk about. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU NEED IT
Discussion boards are a nightmare. like what..... I've done many discussion boards in my life. but this one is just too much man.
A LOT of reading. The discussion boards were awful and tedious but I scored well enough on them. The thing that really irked me was his history in the news essays. He took forever to grade them and didn't provide any feedback until I turned them all in. There was a ton of extra credit work, however, so I didn't need to ace them. Still sucked.
He takes months to grade essays and is extremely critical with grading
This class is extremely time consuming when it doesnt need to be. Discussion boards are ridiculously difficult to earn maximum points in. Is anal about not using citation generators such as Easy Bib, and insists you use the schools library for resources. No matter how much time you put in it will never be enough! Run far, far away from this prof
Dont expect to have any personal problems during this class, and if you do have any dont bring them up to him cause he doesnt care. Had medical issues and he said I was lying. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM HIM!!!!
I can't deal with this between having to answer 20 question in 20 minutes during an open book test and losing more than half of the points if I take an extra 5 minutes to answer the rest, the anal way he grades papers and discussion boards and the being accused of plagiarism 24/7. It's almost impossible to get good grades with him.
This class is extremely writing heavy. I spend at least 10 hours a week on this class. The grading is strict. While his directions are clear for each assignment, they are each at least TEN PAGES LONG so they take at least an hour to fully read and comprehend. Please do not take this class.
Professor Hoffman was one of the toughest graders I have ever had. His discussion boards are incredibly useless in my opinion and he grades them harder than anything else. Would not recommend this professor to anyone
A total pedant when it comes to grading papers; I actually had a good laugh reading through his snarky, pompous remarks. Overall, I found it hard to take the class seriously due to the superficial style of the course and the professor's psuedish attitude. I would recommend getting a history book from your local library rather than taking this class
Many times this professor has flat out disrespected me because i spelled one word wrong and his discussion boards are impossible to satisfy him unless his class is the only one you are taking. I highly recommend that if you need a history credit try to find a different professor. Please if you have him drop it immediately he will ruin your semester
This professor is completely unrealistic when it comes to grading. His comments are rude and snarky and completely unnecessary. This professor wants you to spend 5 hours each night on pointless discussion boards that teach NOTHING. His directions for each assignment are ten pages long and when he grades, he does not even follow his own guidelines.
I was enrolled in his asynch class and it was honestly the easiest class I have ever had. A 20 minute quiz and either a 1.5 page long essay or a Pearson mastering assignment was due each week, and that was all.
Worst class I have ever taken. I'm an online student getting a teaching certificate (have a degree). There were ZERO lectures/material on any history topic at all. NONE. Endless pages of busy work about plagiarism. No clear feedback at all on assignments. You will be teaching yourself. Save your money, just buy the book.
This class was equally difficult and interesting to me, I learned a lot. I struggled with taking proper notes and the weekly quizzes but enjoyed the material and Pearson's assignments. Professor Hoffman allowed me to make up an assignment and it relieved a lot of stress for me, I was so grateful! Overall, he seems caring, helpful, understanding.
This professor has unrealistic expectations. Every class forces students to read about 20+ pages of the textbook and somehow have a photographic memory capable of remembering every little insignificant detail about the text and forces you to read 200+ novels in a week without a regard for how unreasonable or stressful it is for a college student.
This class is very text book heavy and the professor will expect you to read whole chapters in the span of a day and memorize every small detail so you can be quizzed on it during class. Often times you will be teaching yourself. The workload is ridiculous and youre better off picking a class that is not overly demanding of its students.
Be prepared to write a paper a week and be accused of plagiarizing every step of the way. Miss even one of his ten pages of directions and it's a C for you. His discussion boards are Satan's worst nightmare. You will spend half as much time on essays and readings as you will on those. Stay FAR away from this professor. If you have him, drop it.
Run far away from this Professor. If you dont need a history dont take this class! He doesnt care if you pass or fail. He acts like this is the only class that exists on your schedule. He has you read a chapter a night so you can mesmerize everything the text says. No one has photographic memory. Doesnt matter if you have straight As.
I don't recommend this class unless you are prepared to excessively work yourself to the bone. This professor is rude to his students forces you to read 100 pages a week and has excessive discussion board posts with about 7 pages of instructions heckling you about using MLA format and avoiding plagiarism Do not take this class not even for credits.
If you have any chance to avoid this professor I would highly advise doing so. Overall he seemed to be a good guy, but this was by far the hardest college course I have ever taken and I am a junior who attended three different colleges. The amount of work and attention to detail was a lot. Also if you use EasyBib for citations, he will catch you.
Makes you read half or full chapters, an hour or two of reading, in a night, and expects you to remember the smallest details for a pop quiz the next day before being taught about it. Grades on a super weird system and jumps around a lot while teaching (mostly saying things you read from the book). Stick to the study guides on tests and youll be ok
You are expected to read a lot. He is quite passionate about history, which makes the class more interesting, but they are long at get boring after a while. Tests aren't very easy, but are open note.
Beware Pitt students. If you are looking to pick up easy credit over the summer, this is the wrong professor. You will constantly have work that has nothing to do with learning history. If you want to take this class so you can learn how to cite sources all day, this is the class.
Prof. Hoffman is super knowledgeable. There is a lot of assigned reading, but he gives a study guide with the EXACT topics covered on each test! AND HE LETS YOU USE NOTES! I will say that sometimes the lectures run long, so independent study is important, but he gives lots of extra credit assignments, as well as having extra credit on the tests.
Extremely heavy workload for a 100 level, 3 credit course. This class will consume A LOT of your time. His instructions for assignments are lengthy and confusing. He is VERY nitpicky about formatting and citations. He gives no lecture videos, so everything comes from the text. I would highly recommend avoiding this professor.
This class was the worst thing I could have possibly signed up for. Very lecture heavy and lots and lots of reading. BEWARE OF POP QUIZZES! Tests are extremely hard and long, and though it is open notes, he expects you to know every little detail about everything. Jumps around in topic with no explanation. Do NOT take this class!
An intense class for a 100-level course. There's a lot of heavy reading, many required DB posts, multiple essays with strict requirements, and a weird emphasis on citations. You'll be penalized heavily for using incorrect citations. The directions are often unclear and not straight to the point, leaving you more confused than before.
Not terrible, not great. Exams are insane- literally no time I was rushing against the clock for EVERY exam. He does offer extra credit which is nice and helps balance your grade. He is definitely passionate about what he teaches, but he is just not a good teacher.
His chapter exams are difficult. 100 plus questions, timed. Multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, writing. You are expected to memorize irrelevant text from the book for fill in the blank. The exams are all over the place. Be prepared to spend a lot of time skimming notes and the textbook. If you value your GPA skip this class.
He doesn't give students adequate time to complete exams. Good luck, you'll be rushing against the clock the entire time. His assignments are confusing and don't make sense. If you email him he doesn't respond to your questions. Don't his class unless you want to learn how to cite sources properly. Some people just shouldn't teach.
If I could give a negative review I would. He was not a good professor at all. His class was filled with assignments that had no correlation to the tests. His tests were all timed and you will run out of time every single time. Don't take any of his classes. Unless there are no other options don't take his class.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this professor. By far the worst professor I've ever experienced. He thinks his class is your only class you will be taking. Ridiculous deadlines and very specific questions on exams. Overall he was horrible.
I've been an A student all my life until I decided to take Professor Hoffman. His instructions were unclear and his assignments were lengthy with him taking points off for everything. Worst professor I've ever encountered and that is saying something. Don't take his class unless you HAVE to. I learned nothing from his class and it was stressful.
Taking his class is not worth the headache that comes with it. You end up trying to meet his ridiculous deadlines and requirements that don't make sense. He's just not a good professor and it seems like a power trip to him.
Quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had. His assignments aren't very well written and most students don't even do them. He will then email you shocked as to why you didn't do it. Meanwhile most of the students in the class don't know what they are doing. If you ask for help he doesn't provide much. Avoid him at all cost.
Not a likeable person. Doesn't reply to emails. Boring lectures that aren't well organized. Very long weekly readings that will be on exams along with pop quizzes. He's not accommodating or understanding (even when it was his error). He was rude to students druing lecture multiple times. Horrible teacher but he was knowledgeable about the subject
One of worst class I have taken. All he does is talk and not actually teach and wants us to remember everything from the lecture. His test are extremely hard and they were timed which I absolutely hates. He sucks at grading and when I asked him for my grade in the class he basically told me to figure it out on my own. Do not recommended.
Absolutely awful. If I could give a negative rating, I would. Belittles his students/ Seem to not care of the success for his students. Avoid at all costs
Terrible. Weekly multiple page essays and fails people for no reason. Run for the hills
All the information you need for each assignment is given thoroughly, but I advise that you put his docs into Word and cut out the repetition he includes. The workload is large, so I recommend that you get his work out of the way early in the week so it doesn't interfere with your life. The due dates are not considerate of people's schedules.
Odd expectations as opposed to the rest of CCAC facility.
Professor behaves as if his class is the only one students are taking. You are expected to take 100+ question tests in under 90 minutes. Lectures are based off the textbook but are extremely hard to follow as he jumps around from topic to topic. The group debates are a joke, you will be required to post to the DB over Thanksgiving break.
The group debates are very frustrating. He will take points off if you post "too late", which he defines as the night before or the day of the due date. It's ridiculous. As a student with a job and 4 other classes to attend, it was nearly impossible to get a good grade. When it was time for our final debate he still hadn't graded any of the others.
Professor Hoffman may be one of the worst professors I have had. He is super stingy with essay format and citations, and will change his directions each assignment. He flagged me for plagiarism when there was no plagiarism on my paper, and has told me I was citing incorrectly for every paper, yet when I used his corrections I was still wrong...
This class required more work than my other 3 classes combined
if you're not religious before this class, pick one and start praying.
More work in this one class than my 4 other classes combined. For the discussion boards you have to do 5 posts and 10 replies, and he grades extremely hard and takes correct citations very seriously. I hate to rip on him but it has gotten ridiculous. I love history, but I hate this class.
Just to keep it simple...DON'T TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASS!! AVOID AT ALL COST
Very very difficult and over complicated with his directions/ syllabus. i dropped the class.
I signed up to take his class for the summer. When I got his syllabus, it was so overwhelming I had to drop the class. I tried to read through it for three days and get organized but he is way too detailed. Just give us a list of due dates without a paragraph for every assignment. Didn't take his class, but WOULD NOT RECCOMEND -
I have never written a review on this site, and I never will again, but I must this once to warn potential students. His teaching lacks the want to educate and more so takes form as a rigid, ruthless means for him to exert will and power over others. He grades unnecessarily harsh. Worst teacher I've ever had.
It's a very difficult class it's hard to read the board and follow along with notes, he teaches too fast, gives pop quizzes every monday, only gives you a specific amount of minutes to do exams and tests.
This course was unnecessarily stressful. Frequent pop quizzes, overly difficult exams, and poorly structured debates made it hard to learn effectively. The teaching approach needs serious improvement & so does his attitude. It's actually insane how horrible of a teacher he was.
oh god never again. this was an elective for me but the amount of work dominated my semester. why was this harder than anatomy????
