Dr. Mobely was the worst teacher I have ever had. He rarely posted things when they were due, slammed us with 6 weeks worth of work to be done in two weeks, and would not grade anything. However, this was an easy class. But, if you don't enjoy having to deal with someone who literally sucks at their job then steer clear.
Mobley's online class was very confusing he doesn't respond to students emails on time. But is very flexible with due dates. He went weeks without posting anything online then said he runs his online class the same way he runs his in class course. The class is easy but he is very unorganized. You must stay on him to receive your assignment grades.
This is a easy class! The tests were easy, you just need to study the notes he posted online. But the professor was not that good. He was supposed to post homework on moodle each week, but sometimes he forgot to post. And he doesn't respond any emails. :(
Horrible teacher. He would not reply to my e-mails and added so many forums all at once. He grades very easily, so just do all the work and you'll get an A.
Professor Mobley is newly hired. He never responded to any of my emails. Also I did all my work and received great grades but in turn he gave me a B. So his lack of communication with students initially affects our grades. I wouldn't take his online classes ever again.
I took Dr. Mobley's pop music class and his jazz class online. It was a good experience expecially for my first online class. Not a lot of assignments and he's cool if you miss anything. Take these classes for an easy A and to get a great transfer grade for just listening to music and reading a little.
Prof Mobley is goofy and cool and sweet. He'll let you make up assignments if you miss them and seems like he really cares about you. He's always on time too and explains all the quiz stuff so you can pass the class.
Take this class if you want to learn about music from a guy who know wtf he's talking about. He will blow your mind.
My first online class. It was pretty much a good experience. I knew where to go to get stuff and the teacher answered my questions about quizzes and grades. Taking another class with him next semester.
Very good professor. Clear about the requirements and his enthusiasm for jazz was infectious. The timed portions for the listening segments were too harsh at 10 minutes though. Ouch. Would take another class from, maybe not in the summer though. Didn't feel I deserved the minus part of my grade.
I thoroughly enjoy this professors teaching style.
Dr. Mobley's class was really easy. His course outline helps with the quizzes that get administered weekly. The listening portion of the quiz can be tough at times with only 10 minutes but overall very doable. I will definitely be taking more of his classes in the future.
I took his online class over the summer and liked it a lot. Very easy and his quizzes were right off the outlines. Very interactive and it was interesting to me. I recommend his class to anyone.
Dr. Mobley's class was very easy. All of the quizzes were based on the outlines. He did not reply to any of my emails though and was hard to reach when I had any questions about the course work.
AMAZING! There are no other words to describe him. Dr. Mobley is hilarious and wise, he makes sure we learned in the class! He was very brief and easy to understand. He described the material thoroughly and conclusively. I'm highly recommend to take his classes.
Professor Mobley started off the semester going by the syllabus, but then he started discussing music theory which wasn't on the syllabus. He made it very confusing, and refused to clarify when asked to do so by multiple students.
I'm a CAL transfer student and have taken two classes with Doctor Mobley. He's a great teacher, super knowledgeable, funny, and invites students into discussions that are fun and interesting. He's definitely one of the best instructors I've had at BCC or CAL. He's also the reason I am now majoring in music.
Professor Mobley taught me a lot about jazz, and the way he taught the class, he inspired me to learn more about classic jazz artists. He's a great professor and really passionate about the material he teaches
Aaron Mobley is very passionate about music, and he inspired me to start playing a musical instrument. I learned a lot about jazz, and he passed his love of jazz onto me. I loved the class, and the music
Interactive and interesting. This man is organized and makes learning music fun.
His love for music is infectious. Great class, great instructor. Applause!
This man should write a book.
Easy A. But a terrible teacher. He is rude and doesn't respond to emails.
If you want an A in this class, you're gonna have to read extra on your own. He rarely responds to his messages. It's very annoying to get a hold of him because it could take over a week sending him multiple messages just for him to eventually respond. Also, he's rude and honestly, I don't think he should be a teacher.
Love love love this class! Mobley's a great teacher and BCC needs a hundred more like him!
Solid class. Fun. Doing both of his music classes online this summer. Pretty sure I'm getting an A in both classes. Cool people in my sections.
This class re-introduced me to a lot of new music from musicians that I knew but also brought my attention to people I had heard of but not really heard. This class opened up new avenues for me to explore and reawakened my interest in the music of artists I had set aside for much too long. What a journey! Thank you!
Guru.
I took the pop music class. I am in China. It was good. We have many discussions in this music class. I have improved my English.
Dr. Mobley made music even more fun for me than it already was! His expectations were clear, as was his assigned homework. He was helpful when I e-mailed him, and not only answered my questions, but asked me how I was doing with the class, and if I was enjoying it. Be prepared to interact with other students, however, and to use moodle.
TAKE HIS CLASS!! HE really inspired me to learn Music. I took Music 15B with him he explains things well and he really knows his stuff about Music. He is my MAIN Inspiration to change my major from Arts to Music. His homework and test are little and easy so take his class if you want an easy A.
Never take his online class, just a waste of time
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS! THE TESTS ARE RIDICULOUS! (Okay well you can the tests are a pain) He's not that clear when you email him, asked him about how the test was going to be, and he told me to read the syllabus (which had no info on it). Also the tests, are completely asinine, you cannot go backwards on the test, if you like jumping around.
A good experience so far for my first online class in college. It's been good so far. The tests are all open book and from the weekly lessons so it's not that bad if you prepare. The class is interactive and I've met a lot of my classmates who I go to music shows with now which is pretty cool.
Do not get the third edition of the book, because his lesson plans/assignments are based on the names of the chapters of the fourth edition and doesn't really clarify where to look for these sections in the third edition of the book. Also write a lot and try being very into the forums, because he gives extra credit if you write "good" responses.
Mobley's pop music class introduced me to a lot of new music and styles I hadn't heard of before. Met a lot of people in the Bay that were in my class from group discussion and concerts I went to. Not a lot of homework either. We just listen to a lot of good music. Taking the jazz class next.
My boyfriend is a guitar player. To be honest he helped me with the listening part of the class. The teacher is cool.
I'm sad this class is almost over. :-( I usually only listen to the music I like but I learned about a bunch of other styles. I'm a Bob Marley and Rhianna fan now!
Yo you should take this class! You will leave each meeting session feeling enlightened. He is really knowledgable. The only thing to be concerned about is the online quizzes becaue they can be tricky.
This guy changed the way I see everything. Take his class!
Prof. Mobley is extremely knowledgeable about all things music, particularly jazz and its origins. The course tracks w/the textbook (you need it). The hybrid course requires thoughtful participation in forums/class and music identification (about 100 tracks that you keep!). Prof. Mobley's enthusiasm is infectious. I'd take any class he teaches.
One of the most organized professors I have had in any course. Dude's a walking music library. It's crazy. If you can get in to one of his classes you should.
Im a 4.0 student and took this class and had to drop because his assignments are unrealistic. you will get a C if you try really hard. seriously run the other way!!! take Clinton day online.
This is second class with Dr. Mobley this year at BCC. One of my favorite teachers hands down. He helped me land a music internship coming up in the summer. Super stoked!
I could listen to Mobley talk about music all day. Take his pop class. The people in my class are pretty laid back. There's a bunch of artists and musicians so yeah its on point. Yeah and I think he's a Kanye fan but he won't say lol
Great professor, very knowledgeable. I definitely got much more than I expected from this class.
The online class of Music 15A is more difficult online than I anticipated. Dr. Mobley isn't responsive the way you would expect so definitely prepare yourself for that. If you work hard, an A should be easy, but the course is not a piece of cake, expect to write about 30 pages worth for the forums during the entire course of the semester.
This class was well beyond what I thought an online class would be. It as actually fun! Dr. Mobley lays out the expectations really clearly which I appreciate in an instructor. There is a lot of interaction with your classmate so be prepared to do some writing. Taking another class with Mobley in the summer! Highly recommend if you love music.
First music class. Made it through with an A! Good feedback on my work. Exams not too bad if you read and do the listening prep.
Dr. Mobley is hands down the best instructor I've had in a long time. You can tell he enjoys teaching the class and has fun with his students. If I wasn't transferring I would take more classes with him. His Friday class on pop music was a 3 hour class but never felt like it. You rock, Mobley!
Great class! Mobley is funny, cool, understanding, intelligent. I'm not a Jazz fan but I learned a lot and it was more enjoyable than i thought! Musts: skim your text, show up to class, and don't miss ANY HW. There is a lot, but it's not hard. Just follow directions and you'll be fine! I got an A. Thanks for an awesome semester Dr. Mobley!
Mobley is a great music professor but is not easy. This is not an easy A class. His exams are challenging and require a good amount of studying. He is very willing to help his students. I had a greater appreciation for Jazz after the class was over. If you try, you'll learn a lot.
First off I'm a music head and squeaked out an A in the pop music and jazz class! Yes, I took TWO music classes this summer. I DO NOT RECOMMEND taking both the same time btw. It's a lot. Dr. Mobley requires actual participation and comprehension which I appreciate as a a fellow educator myself. Be sure you read the syllabus and happy adventures!
Terrible! This class could be amazing, but Mobley purposefully makes it difficult. The work load is OVER THE TOP. I took an online English class and ended up spending at least triple the time on his hybrid course. Horrible! Don't recommend at all.
My favorite class so far! Lots of music. The teacher actually expects you to learn, which I appreciate as a person who is serious about my academics. The hybrid class requires actual online work and in-person effort. I'm enrolled at UC East Bay taking sociology and history classes so a lot of what we're taking about overlaps. Highly recommend!
Took his online class and he was a delight. Would have given him 5 stars if he had participated more in the online discussions and offered more feedback to further the discussion. You MUST participate in the online class or he will drop you, however his lectures are very interesting and he is very knowledgeable and passionate about music.
The prof is genius crazy like cool though . Makes you think and appreciate everything about different styles of music and art. Took his short term class fyi
He does all his tests online so take them with a friend. The test are pretty easy and you can shazam most of the music. If you have a group to take the exam with then you will get an A because the exams are graded automatically and you can see all the correct answers.
Professor Mobley's class brings out the best in you as a student. The topics he covers will expand your boundaries in music and leave you with a greater appreciation for music in general. He is fair and his course demands a good amount of time in order to succeed. I highly recommend his class.
Great class, definitely had to work for it but it's not like the class isn't doable or worth it. Half of the class is online and you meet for one hour every week. The prof makes the topics really accessible and the online forums definitely help solidify the concepts. All tests are online and open book but that doesn't mean you're gonna get 100%.
I took this class along with my other classes (my major) at UCB and found Professor Mobley to be one of best teachers, if not the best teacher, I have ever had. He invites you into the conversation about music, which I love. You can tell he respects and genuinely cares about students. I highly recommend this course and this professor.
Prof Mobley is awesome -- very intelligent, passionate, well-educated, and funny. He cares for his students and wants them to learn. He also uses the history of music to explore themes of human justice, society, etc. It's great, and you will listen to lots of cool music in class. Definitely recommend this prof & class.
Terrible class, filled with boring "busy work" that takes hours, mandatory lectures filled with useless information and tests that have nothing to do with the given text and lectures. Mobley is impossible to reach by mail and is extremely insensitive to his students personal life and concerns. Ive never felt so mistreated by a professor. Awful.
Easily the most enjoyable class I've taken. Prof Mobley is thoughtful, insightful, and knows a lot about a lot, especially music. Great class. Great instructor!
I thought I was a musician before this class lol this guy. You can take composition lessons with him if he accepts you. That's pretty much it. Just great all around. Took the class as an elective but it should be a life requirement.
I signed up for this class because I couldn't get into another one. I am very happy with my decision though. I don't know my grade yet and don't usually get excited about a class but I'm interested in the music so much now thanks to the teacher.
SWOON EVERY DAY I am in LOVE with this guy
Prof Mobley is amazing -- very intelligent, and obviously passionate about his profession (both as a teacher & a musician). It's a hybrid class with a lot of online work to do. He infuses the lectures with the history of the music and the social themes that were occurring during the time. You are also exposed to some really excellent music.
he is a terrible teacher.
I regret taking this class as the expectations from students is excessive and the grading system needs to be improved. Your grade is based off 4 tests and the final. The forums for this class don't count towards your grade which is unfortunate as your grade will not reflect all the effort you put into the class.
Feeling relieved just got my grade! WOOHOO!!! Dr. Mobley makes you think A LOT about literally EVERYTHING (ugh!) in the music he assigns but he's totally fair. If you do all of the work he hooks you up in the end of the semester. Transferring this semester and was worried for nothing! Cool class just do the work and talk to the prof.
My music heads take MObley's classes yo I took two already and am gonna take another at the Jazz School it's across the street. Get in where you fit in!
An accessible professor is not always a guarantee but he went out of his way to help me all semester. Quality experience, and now I actually know WHY Coltrane matters. Thank you, Professor Mobley.
I love jazz! I love Mobley!
great teacher
This teacher was OKAY. I love learning about music but this class is ONLY based upon tests. Your tests are written and music identification, so there's 2 tests that equal one. Be prepared to take a 30 question test in 15 minutes, YES 15 minutes. I took notes, read and studied and ended up with a C. I wouldn't take him again, ever.
I thoroughly enjoyed this instructor. He expects you to learn and comprehend the topics and be able to apply the techniques he teaches. It's challenging but definitely worth it. I recommend the class.
Amazing proffesor, well spoken clear and easy to follow. Class is simple, attend, pay attention, do homework and everything is good.
Really enjoyed Mobley's class, he has great passion for the subject, he has a few rules but he is EXTREMELY strict on them, he will ask you to leave class if you have any technology out during class. He loves talking to students about music and will implement resources found by students in his lectures. Make effort to study for quizzes.
At first I signed up for the class as a requirement but ended up taking more classes with him. The classes are great. He never talked down to students and was always available if I ever even just wanted to chat about my own music. He's a brilliant instructor.
Not too much to say. He's straight-forward and that is a good thing. I think he knows more than any book ever written about a lot. A bit much at times. All around cool though and one of my better experiences in higher education and I am a P.A. If you sign up you will love it.
Such a great class! Highly recommend everyone take this class. Lots of listening of music but that's exactly what you're here to learn. Get ready to learn lots of information in a short amount of time (8 weeks). Lectures are inspiring and interesting.
while the work during the week isn't bad, the tests he assigns are horrendous - he gives two per midterm, and one you have to identify music and their artist. don't take if you expect an easy a. i've never taken a more difficult class and i'm a science major
Mr. Mobley is amazing! His lectures are very engaging, we get to listen to lots of cool music and learn lots about the history of Jazz and pop music. Hes respectful, knowledgeable, plus hes a BEAUTIFUL man!
The hard part is the listening part where you must download his music playlist and remember every song because you will be tested on that. It could be the beginning of the song or the end of the song. Aaron is not good at replying back to your messages. Whether it be your school's email or your online message through Moodle. He does not reply back.
I can listen to him talk about music ALL day. This is my second class with Professor Mobley. Thumbs up for sure plus he's really nice to look at.
I am a World War II veteran and studied the history of jazz with Dr. Aaron Mobley at Berkeley City College. Professor Mobleys class covered the historical and biographical details of how the music developed in America and around the world. I was there and he gets it right! I am impressed with the course and the instructor. Thank you, Sir.
I never expected music to be this challenging. I am a veteran and retired pilot transitioning into healthcare. Prepare yourself to take a deep dive into Mobley's class. It is well worth it if you do. Well done, Doctor Mobley.
The Doc is one of the best lecturers I've had. Very interesting, funny, and topical lectures. He respects his students and encourages them to voice their opinions. Some forums for extra credit, and the grade is determined by 4 tests and one final. Each test has a listening identification and history part: all multiple choice. Tests are done at home
This guy takes this class way too seriously, the lectures are easy going and the quizzes seem like they will be too since they're open note but he asks specific technical questions that should not be required for an ethnic studies class. It meant to cover history of jazz but instead you end up in reviewing so much technical listening identification
His tests are not on expected material, the listening identification portion is the worst. He expect you to know all of the techniques and styles of every musician even though its no a musical composition class. if you're taking it for requirement go with a different choice
Probably the worst professor ever. Forum posts were a lot and long but only worth 3% of the total grade. Messed up my grade and I literally had to email him for a whole year because he kept forgetting to change it and rarely responded
Great class if you realy like jazz. Best teacher I've taken at school so far. Not very strict exept on attendance or if your using your lap top in class while he's teaching. Definitely reccomend if you love jazz instrument's or even if you just need transfer units. Important to stay up to date with his "song"listening part of the course.
Over the past semester I've learned around a hundred different compositions, discovered new genres, and analyzed scores and techniques of the great players of jazz. It's an elective but be ready to put in some work. Professor Mobley is a pleasure to learn from. Also recommend taking his Western music course this semester.
For an elective, the work load is ridiculous. It is a music history class and he expects you to understand advanced musical theory. This will probably hurt your gpa and consume way too much of your time. It sounds easy but it is a trap.
One of the best classes I've taken. The professor makes you listen and actually show up. It's challenging and fun if you care enough to learn. Totally recommend.
I was unable to access course materials. After being denied access to the Google Drive he acknowledged that he saw my request but according to the syllabus everything must be downloaded during the first week. I apologized and asked how I should proceed. 3 Days no response. I dropped the class and will be retaking it with a different instructor.
One of the more challenging classes that I've taken in Berkeley. I appreciate the professor's style and approach to how he teaches the subject. Taking another class with him in the summer.
Professor Mobley is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot in his class. However, I did not feel fairly supported by the class to do well on exams. Theyre in depth about a lot of music theory material thats hardly taught. Calling it an Intro to Jazz History course is misleading. Most frustrating piece was his poor lenience and communication.
Dr Mobley's pedagogy is remarkable. As a teacher myself I learned a lot about best practices. You should take the class if you really want to understand how music has been made by some of the most important Americans of the 20th century. Recommend!
It might be because it is a summer course, but still, the professor is super lazy. He does not bother to make any changes to the original semester-long course material when condensing it to a summer semester. So expect to do upwards to 8 discussions a week with averaging 200-300 words and 3-5 replies to classmates in 5 days.
Took a summer class and loved it. The professor's lectures were in a movie format that made it easy for me listen to when I was driving or whatever. Great learning formats and exposure to music I never heard of before too.
one of the coolest teachers I've had tests are fair and the content is interesting would take other classes with him
Seriously great content and an understanding professor who structures the lessons and the course to ensure everyone can grasp the (often) difficult concepts. Mobley is easily in my top 3 category of music profs and I'm a music major. I love Mobley !
amazing class amazing teacher amazing music take the class and you will love it that is all for now
I didn't know what the class was before I signed up. The instructor wanted you to discuss music each week in class online which I was not ready for but it ended up being cool. Taking another class with Dr. Mobley this semester. It's all good.
Took this class after I failed it at Laney. This class is actually structured and INTERESTING and the instructor knows how to use technology. Tests are reasonable and you know what to expect. That's pretty much the game for me.
Best online summer class I've taken so far. Dr. Mobley was always clear about the material, the assignments, and expectations. Although I worked hard on the essay portions, I do feel he was a generous grader. At least in my experience. Very knowledgeable and accomplished instructor.
So Professor Mobley is pretty strict about the requirements but the assignments are enjoyable. It's a pop music class and he makes you think about pop culture and how it is connected to music and our ides about society. Learned a lot. Tests are breezy if you stay on point. Nice class.
He is a hard to reach person, the class was extremely hard. He is a nice guy, but the class is simply not worth the stress, avoid it if you can.
This class opened me up to thinking about music in new ways. Lots of American history and socio-political commentary built into the course. As a professor he is pretty laid back and gives useful feedback. Plenty of discussion which I enjoy in a classroom and he teaches you how to understand music and how it's made. Thumbs up!
Inspirational class and inspirational instructor who obviously loves western music. You'll learn a lot and you listen to a lot of music. Tests aren't bad if you show up & take good notes from the lectures and do the listening. He talks a bit about music theory behind the compositions but you're not required to actually do Theory. Great class!
Take his classical music class. Trust me. I learned how to read music which I always wanted to do. He doesn't test you on music theory but you will learn some along the way. Tests aren't that bad if you show up and take notes.
Learn a lot about classical music and he's a pretty reasonable grader pretty chill class
Professor Mobley's class is organized in such a way that you can succeed. His expectations were very clear as were the lectures. (He puts a lot into his lectures and it shows.) Take notes and ask questions. There is always discussion in class which helps you learn through shared dialogue.
I took Music Appreciation over the summer and it is more stressful than it should be. There were several discussions and replies we had to do over each week, but he was pretty lenient on the writing part. There were 4 tests (200 points 100 points each part) and it was ridiculous how 1 question was 10 points. Good luck if you take this class.
Cool class. Good music. Solid prof.
This class was a good fit for me. Lectures were straight ahead. It drives me crazy when the lectures go in circles. Discussions were interesting. One thing to know: this professor does not do extra credit so make sure you turn in stuff on time. Taking another class with Mobley in the fall.
A real music class with a prof who knows his stuff. Best elective I've taken so far.
I took his class in an online version. He hasn't grade any assignments all semester. Don't even think of sending him emails if you are expecting a quick reply, he will answer after 2 weeks at least, if at all. Avoid taking his class online.
This triggered my anxiety like anything. He is lazy and doesn't bother to grade discussions or any material until the very end and he is such an uninvolved teacher. I wrote to him WEEKS ago and still haven't heard back. I feel so dumb for wanting to take this class. I was genuinely loving it at first and now I am just waiting for it to be over
Awful experience. He is lazy as a teacher. Doesn't bother replying to students and the course work is so heavy for an elective
I did all online classes this semester, obviously due to COVID-19. This class was the best choice I've made. The discussions are conversational and not graded. The professor mostly focuses on listening and appreciating the music. I missed a bunch of work because of family issues and covid but Dr. Mobley helped me get my grade back up. Recommend!
Mobley's classes are in my top 5 for sure. Exams are breezy. Discussions are laid back. Pretty strict tho on not missing discussions and deadlines but it's fair cuz you get extra points for not missing work. Taking another music class in the Spring with him.
First music class I've ever taken. Solid choice. Cool profesor. Lots of music which is awesome if you're really into good music. Office hours on zoom to explain things was super helpful so I could get the flow of the class.
Taking the short semester version of this class and loving every second of it. I'm double-majoring at UC Berkeley and much of what the instructor covers lined up with my other courses so yeah baby! The music in this course gave me all the feels and my GPA is happy! Yeah baby!
Definitely a Kanye fan? lol Seriously. dude knows his stuff. Easy tests if you take notes. Discussions aren't graded in this class. It's mostly about participation. Participate and get your course total bumped at the end of the semester. Great elective choice especially for online.
You are setting yourself up for failure if you take this class. He is a horrible teacher and this is a bad class
All the positive reviews from 9th December are written by himself. That is so pathetic.
Worst teacher EVER
He is a lazy, uninvolved teacher. He doesn't reply to any emails EVER. His discussions are not scored even though they take so much time and he is unhelpful. The material is too heavy for an elective and this guy is really setting his students up for failure
I have PTSD from taking this class and I am worried I will not get into my desired school because this teacher is so uninvolved and has set up his students up for failure. Also, he has written all the positive remarks on the 9th December himself because I brought to his attention that even students on Rate my professor have similar views
horrible professor, material heavy class.
Honestly the worst professor I had ever dealt with. Too many class discussions and they are not graded. He will not reply to any email you send him and over all is just a lazy teacher
The professor is bad with communication and there were various inconsistencies in the syllabus. The material is hard to digest. One of the assignments was concerning slavery and was extremely disturbing, I wan't able to complete it. I didn't understand what it had to do with jazz. Not sure if he was having personal issues this semester. It was bad
Clear class (which I appreciate because of my ADHD). Quizzes are the main grades. Two discussions weekly (not graded). Fair and clear. Second class with this instructor at BCC.
The usual. Read the book and listen to the music.
DrMobley is the best music professor in the district. He had great concepts. I even took his jazz course and pop course. All the material pertains to the music industry, and if you're interested in learning about pop culture, I strongly recommend you take this course And be very willing and open. This course excellent concepts
Gotta echo my classmates here who know whats up. Top shelf. We connected and sailed through. Dr. Mobley is on point. Seems to me the class is for learners. Saw some salty lazy haters who failed. ha Takin the Spring jazz class and private piano. Recommend.
There are four tests. Each test has two parts. All four have a listening portion. Two have a written portion; the other two are multiple-choice questions based on the lectures. There is an extra credit assignment towards the end of the semester. There are also weekly HW forum responses; if you do all of them, your overall grade increases by 5%.
I love classical music! This class saved my sanity during the whole quarantine situation!
Took Professor Mobley last semester. He didn't respond to my emails and I found out that he wasn't responding to any other student's emails. At first, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe he was having a rough time in quarantine until I saw all the ratings on here that he clearly posted himself. Kinda funny, kinda disrespectful.
His '20 fall jazz history class was super interesting I would highly recommend it for anyone remotely interested in music. There are probably easier classes for the same credits. We had to do a fair bit of replying to discussions and the quizzes were hard if you didn't study (internet helped..) The extra work was worth it I found it v. interesting
huge ego
I went through the most stressful semester I've had in my life because of this class. I don't think he was trained on how to use Canvas because NONE of the assignments show up in the to-do list, so it's easy to miss EVERYTHING. Never replies to ANYTHING so you can't even try to ask for a make up. I wish I read all of the reviews before I enrolled.
I initially had an interest in jazz music but after being in the class for a short amount of time before dropping, I no longer have an interest. Poor communication, doesn't respond to anyone at all and doesn't know how to use Canvas well. Doubt he's better in person. All the positive reviews seem suspicious. For MUSIC10, take Monica Ambalal. whole grade is dependent on exams about things he never taught. google couldnt even save me
Don't take this class for any reason. Quiz is the only graded thing in the class that all the questions are about something that he never taught. The class is unorganized and most importantly he NEVER replies to emails. Unnecessary discussions that are non-graded require students to reply to ten peers. Chaotic grading criteria. Just DO NOT TAKE.
Not a ton of work. Plenty of music. Weekly discussions, The usual. Interesting content that carried over into a lot of my other classes.
covid made my semester crazy this music class kept me on point so nice gotta be the most flexible prof in the district mobley is the way
thumbs down
Mobley is brilliant. However I saw the positive reviews and I disagree. I'm Summa Cum Laude. This is the most difficult class I have taken. he added extra credit so I might get an A. We had winners in that class and the highest grades were Cs on first exam. Too much information and work and more time consuming than statistics. STRESSFUL
one word - HORRIBLE! Avoid at all costs! I don’t know what makes this person to be so unhappy with life, but it’s just impossible to deal with him. Crazy quizzes. Harsh grading. Unavailable via emails. The worst course I’ve ever taken!
Dr. Mobley is very knowledgeable. However, his expectations for the class are ridiculous high. Expect several hours of video lecture/documentaries a week. There are four tests which make up your entire grade. You'll need copious notes or existing musical knowledge in order to do well. The courseload is extremely heavy and will take lots of time.
Do not take any of his classes, he is just a failed musician with a huge ego who never knows how to teach.
the professor doesn't know how to use canvas very well. There are times when the class is unable to access something or he would post something from his other classes. The worst situation was when he told us when the final was the week before finals but he didn't assign the final until the very last minute and we could have had a week to do it.
Takes music and class seriously. Needs to be a clearer correlation between the matter taught and the matter in the quizzes. Not a difficult A if you pay close attention to his expectations. It seems his version of being interactive is calling random students out who are clearly confused. With good ppl, you can make an understanding of the class.
Expects too much of students that have made it clear they have no prior music knowledge. Interacts positively with certain students, but makes it clear he has favorites. Will reopen tests or assignments if needed. Has good intentions and the class was a fun break from classes like math or english, but a bit messy.
Attendance is mandatory, no electronics allowed in class. Forces participation, doesn't care if you don't want to be called on or if you look confused. Huge ego, poor examples and definitions of simple music terms. Clearly knowledgable, but would guess he's never taken an education class in his life. The most boring music class i've ever been in.
One of the worst test makers in history. Without intimate knowledge of musical theory, the tests are too hard. Inconsistent grading, assignments, and tests. Sometimes he allows retakes, other times he doesn't. When he allows retakes, take them as many times as possible. Also, a few of his assignments were not in modules, but only on the calendar.
Super lecture-heavy, and not a very engaging curriculum. I had no motivation by the end of the semester to complete the weekly assigned multiple lectures, discussions, and quizzes. Lots of work for a supposedly simple course--- I would not retake it.
Literally has to be the worst teacher out there. The course itself isnt hard but we have all these assignments but graded on the Quizs which has 2 parts then the final. Those quizes are worth lots of points. Im passing with this C but he's so unrealistic when making the tests, thinking we actually suppose to "memorize" all the music playlists.NEVER
Doesn't respond to emails, makes it almost impossible to do quizzes, this class is harder than all of my other classes.
No homework, just discussions, tests, and quizzes. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF if you have another option. Does not respond to emails, has no leniency whatsoever. Much more work is assigned than the appropriate unit amount, I have no idea why there are so many positive reviews, nor why those students had a different experience. Perhaps he is on vacation.
Extremely interesting lectures, which is where you will learn almost all test material. No homework only optional discussions. Humorous and made it fun to learn new things. Accommodating on deadlines/ lenient with extensions. He very clearly wants all of his students to succeed and it was shown in his teachings. Would absolutely take class again.
Class is horrible. Does not respond to emails at all. Does not care for the students. I would not recommend this teacher. Class is easy but when you need help understanding he will not respond. Hope this help a lot please get a teacher that wants you to succeed in yo career.
First music class at college. My favorite so far.
“Dr.” Mobley is by far one of the worst professors I have had throughout my entire college career, if you wanting to take one of his online classes, STAY AWAY. Be prepared for no responses to any emails you have sent, be prepared for long, insufferable lectures, and finally be prepared for absolutely no assistance or help whatsoever. Stay away lol!
Lectures are the core of this class, but they can get dry. Participation is mandatory, which keeps you engaged but can be awkward. Leverage unstuck study and the free textbook to supplement - it really helps make the material click.
There were many long lectures, discussions, and tests. He cares about his students and sends out messages regularly to keep them updated, but the material was challenging. For the tests, you had to listen to songs and engrave their titles and artists into your head.
I took him for Music Appreciation. This was a stressful class to take, as the expectations were unclear. He expects detailed information in the exams, that isn't really taught in the lectures. He also doesn't allow usage of external materials, so it puts you in a difficult position. He is also unresponsive to emails.
I took this class for the History of Jazz. Expectations are unclear as he will ask for very specific information on assignments and exams, but doesn't provide said information in his lectures. He generally follows a consistent schedule when it comes to assignments, but during the final exams, his schedule was all over that place.
He is a great professor; however, he does not respond to emails. Music is a hard subject to learn for almost everyone, so be ready that this is not going to be an easy course. He is not actually a hard grader on the essay, but his test is actually really challenging.
Horrible professor that does not read emails. I emailed him multiple times so that I could get off the waitlist and enroll. He ignored the emails completely. If a professor doesn't keep up with their emails, it shows an extreme lack of professionalism. It's easy to conclude that his ability to respond to emails matches his ability to instruct.
Was disorganized and had unrealistic expectations, with materials not ready in Week 1 and heavy workloads: 4-5 hours of listening to videos, reading books, taking notes, and writing min 1,000 words each week. The instructor's knowledge is okay, but without prior knowledge of African American history and music, the course is not recommended, PERIOD.
GO TO CLASS!! I think I only got an A in this class because of my musically talented friends who took it with me. Tests are take home but you should go to class if you don't want to open the test and realize that you should've focused on the pieces he played. Overall great guy, won't let you sleep in class tho.
So many discussions, like over 1,000 words a week in discussions alone. I took an 8 week course so maybe that affected the workload. But the first week there was like 5 assignments. Also closes everything even lectures when the things are due. And makes you reply to10people usually. Wouldnt take him again, especially cause i don't even like music.
for an 8 week course, by far the worst class i have ever taken, i thought this was gonna be an easy class but you write at least 1000+ words per week, wants you to memorize like 20 songs per module. Doesn't respond to emails. Lectures are in total at least 2-6 hours long. All together this class was not easy for NO REASON!
Dr.Mobley is unreachable unless you take his in person class. His lectures span from 30 minutes to 3 hours and he gives ungodly amounts of homework. You're averaging about 200-400 words per discussion and replying to more than 4-10 classmates everytime. Would not recommend. He also didn't grade the essays he assigned at the beginning.
