One of the best professors I've had, but also the toughest grader. Always willing to help.
If you're not really good at chemistry, do NOT take him. Unless, like me, he's the only one teaching organic. Very, very specific in his questions and an impossible grader. Doesn't relate the material well to the students. Is USUALLY willing to help.
hates people who play sports
Hard grader, teaches CHM 100 like it's CHM 400, but easy to go to for questions.
Organic--The material is tough, the grading of tests is beyond ridiculous however Dr. Monte uses a VERY generous curve to compensate. It is my opinion that he is an extremely intelligent educator but belongs in a lab rather than a lecture hall.
rediculously difficult
Hard grader. I'm studying up to 30 hours a week for this 3 credit class. PAY ATTENTION TO EVERY LAST DETAIL. Gives to partial credit. Or wait two semesters then Czerwinski teaches again.
He grades very tough and he assigns a lot of unnecessary questions.
The hardest class that I've ever take. Organic chem is hard but he really makes it impossible. Tests are hard, most are multiple choice with 10 point each question. Grades are fair but tend to fail you.
He is a nice guy, but thinks that everyone should be able to figure out everything on their own. If you get frustrated eaily DONT take him. He is extremely tough when grading.
easily the most difficult class i've ever taken with easily the most arrogant man i've ever met.
Never worked so hard or been so proud to get a C.
A challenging prof... but you'll really learn your stuff. Willing to help, but you have to be persistent if you don't understand something b/c otherwise he'll give you an answer and expect you to get it.
Definitely a tough course, but Monte is really helpful outside of class, pay attention and do the work and you'll survive, its not as bad as people say!
Re-copy your notes, and ask him if you have questions, he's not as bad as he has been made out to be.
I think Monte is a better than some of the ratings here suggest. Make no mistake, neither organic nor Monte is "easy," but Monte is pretty good prof.
I survived the class with a C and was extremely happy! Felt Monte knew his stuff but couldn't communicate to the students in a way we could understand.
passed with a B+ by simply asking when i had questions... a good prof that a lot of people fear because he wont let you pass if you dont learn you stuff
I'm not a very good Chem student, hence I took Chem Comm. He was willing to help when I asked. All I had to do was suck it up and put in a little extra effort, and he was there to help. Good prof. Labs were fun.
If you have questions, ask and he'll help until you get stuff. O-chem is not easy, and not everyone likes it, and he knows it, and doesn't hold it against you! Talks fast and can make things more tricky than they are, but really nice about it all.
Dr. Monte makes chem lab interesting. He is kind of a picky grader, but overall I would totally recommend him to anyone!
At first I didnt think he was that bad, but then things went downhill. He really knows his stuff but cant teach it. Ask for help and go to review sessions they do help.
Monte is really hard, he goes way to fast and assumes that you know the basics before coming in to class, but how could you if you've never taken ochem before. doesn't know how to teach, take Miller, he explains things much better and is much more helpful
Not good. Talks way to fast, doesn't help if you go in to talk with him. Extremely picky grader. Seemed cool and first then wow he is a jerk.
seems like a good teacher at first, but when the material gets heavy, he rushes to try to get thru it all by semester's end. Also, uses outline and not enough specific examples.
Ok, first of all Monte is a great teacher one of the smartest I know. He doesn't spoon feed you information just so you can spit it out, you have to think and reason which is how you learn. Anyone thinking about going on to med school should take any of monte's classes, he will prepare you for the teaching style of med school, appreciate it.
Monte is a great guy. He helps a lot, and his office is always open! Be sure to use him. His class helps you understand anatomy and physiology a lot better. He is great for pre-health students.
Organic Chem is hard, no question, but Monte doesn't make it easier. Explanations in the form of outlines are vague but if you go to him with questions he explains more in depth. Studied at least 20 hours a week and hardcore studied 2 weeks prior to exams and managed a C (usually I don't work that hard and get an A). Congrats if you survive!
Organic Chem is a difficult class. Dr. Monte is an awesome professor though. He has a subtle sense of humor that keeps lectures interesting and his office is really always open to questions. Despite being the Chem Chair he usually gets exams back literally within a few hours of taking them. His exams are fair but true tests of competence.
Chemistry is not my favorite subject, but I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Dr. Monte has a good sense of humor, is a personable guy, and corrects/hands back exams the same day that they were taken. The end of the semester goes by a little fast, so prepare to study a little harder toward the end, but overall a great class and professor.
Excellent class, favorite professor thus far. Be prepared to be randomly selected for the Atomic Love Connection within the first few days of class, the activity you are participating in may even be described as kinky, haha. He has a good sense of humor and is very approachable, strongly recommended.
Excellent class
Doc Monte is AWESOME!!! I highly recommend taking him if you have the option. He's really entertaining (even at 7:45 a). He does a great job of explaining everything and gives great examples. He challenges students but reasonably. Sincerely the BEST chem prof you will probably have at UWL. Loved the LOVE CONNECTION! :)
Doc Monte's AWESOME!! Take him if you can.
No doubt one of the most difficult classes I have taken. O chem isn't easy by any standard and Monte isn't an easy prof. However, you learn a lot from him and he prepares you better than anyone else for all the reaction mechanisms to come in 304!... Just follow the electrons.
This is the hardest class I've taken thus far at UW-L, but Dr. Monte has become my favorite professor at UW-L. He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well, and you will ACTUALLY LEARN the material (which helped me ace chm304!). He is amazing. Take him if you can appreciate a challenge!
O Chem is not an easy A...Monte has a relaxed grading curve to balance it. I did not put even close to the amount of work into the course as I know I should have and came out with a B -- very close to an AB. I do recommend Monte loved his notes too --- he writes all over the boards which I love.
Without question the best teacher I have ever had at UWL. He is unbelievably intelligent and he know hows to write a difficult test, but he definitely prepares you for them. Reading the text will help. He holds review sessions every week that really helped. He actually TEACHES you and is so good at it that he makes you WANT to do awesome! TAKE HIM!
monte is a great guy and makes the class interesting especially for a 745 class. he is very helpful and has a review session every week. READ THE BOOK!!!! he has good notes but if you want a good grade you absolutely have to read the entire book and keep up with the syllabus.
Dr. Monte is a good professor, he goes through the material very very fast and that makes the class difficult. But if you read ahead of time and not fall behind this is a great class to take. Ask help on the hw assignments they are easy points.
Smartest professor I've ever met, yet the hardest class ever. Tests are really difficult!!
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR! He goes out of his way to make sure his students are succeeding. Writes a lot of notes very quickly, which is good if you re-write them later legibly. He also has a pretty cool final exam setup. I ended up not even needing to take the final! I HIGHLY recommend him. He is so smart and helpful and an all around nice person. TAKE!
Extremely hard class but Monte is very smart. He knows what he's talking about but goes quickly through the material and isn't a ton of help when you ask questions. Tests are difficult but manageable.
Very high quality teacher, expert in the field. Sometimes not extremely clear, however that's expected with the class material. Recommend.
Either you understand ochem, or you don't. If you don't, it obviously is hard and difficult. I am one of those that doesn't understand it, but Monte is SUPER helpful and encouraging if you go to his office hours. I personally thought his exams were hard, but it is what it is. I would probably take someone else if I could.
Okay. So OChem is incredibly difficult for me so this class has been a challenge from the start. Yes, it is hard, but it is doable. Monte has been super accommodating with meeting to review material and makes sure I understand it. There are pre-tests that he gives out a week before the exams which gives us a good idea of what we need to know.
Hard class, but overall good OChem instructor. Has a review session every week and many office hours for questions. Pretests a week before the exam on concepts to know. 5 EC points on each exam. Put in many hours of studying starting 4-5 days before exam. Goes through material quickly so redo notes after class. Didn't end up having to take final.
Dr. Monte has been my favorite professor at UWL so far. He is extremely caring about his students and is super encouraging. His test are tough, but are very doable, just read the text book and rewrite the notes! He has an awesome sense of humor once you get used to it which makes class fun.
He is literally the worst. After going online this semester he was no help for my CHM103 lab. I emailed him, no response. He gave us 45min to do a 40 point test on material we turned in but he never graded. I don't know how to take a test if my professor isn't even providing feedback on our labs. If you take CHM103, don't take Monte for lab.
same as the review before me, but more info. He would tell us one thing and it ending up to be something else. told us the day of about the lab final and didn't give me my accommodations even though we discussed about them prior. never put final grades from labs so idk what was used for my over all chem grade. just seemed like he didn't care
Finals are in a few days and he has not graded a SINGLE assignment for lab. He hasn't even said if there will be a final in our lab. There is absolutely no feedback and you cannot reach him via email, he wont respond, ever. I honestly dont even get how he has this job he has done literally nothing besides shown up to lab, waste of money and time.
Dr. Monte's online organic chemistry lab was awful. The content wasn't super challenging but I went the whole semester not knowing a single grade I had in lab. He didn't even said if there will be a final in our lab until the day he released it . He can also come off condescending and talks down to students as a "joke". I wouldn't take him again.
Dr. Monte is fine in lab, but was absolutely horrible online. He rarely posted assignments in a timely matter or kept his students informed. No grades or feed back were handed out and you were still expected to take the 2 exams for the course. He removed his Canvas page the day before grades were due and gave you a grade with no explanation why.
Dr. Monte does not grade. Students never got graded until after taking the final and the entire class got 9/10 on every worksheet, graded within a few hours. He was constantly at least 15mins late to class, and 30 mins late to the midterm. He does not respect Covid19 policy, there were times where students were unable to socially distance. AVOID
Aaron Monte is easily the worst Professor I have had at uwl through my junior year of school. He was at least 15 minutes late to every class, was 35 minutes late to the midterm and grades were due today and theyre not in. He gave everyone 9/10 on our assignments and didnt tell us what to study for the exams, nor did we get any worksheets back
I cant imagine a worse teacher for this class. He never tells you what to expect and doesnt get you the scores for homework until way too late. He thinks he is super cool and funny but he is just an old man that thinks he is 20 still. Some of his comments are not okay and inappropriate. Stay away.
Professor Monte never showed up for class on time. He did not post any class material on Canvas until the last two weeks of classes. Our lab was split into two groups , but he was not clear as to when which group was going to meet. He never graded anything, so I had no idea how I was doing in the class, and felt unprepaired for the midterm + final.
I dont know how he is still allowed to teach. He is inappropriate in the way he acts, things he says, and things he does. Giving extra credit to be Facebook friends what a stalker. Avoid at all cost!!
Honestly he was the worst professor I've ever had. Extremely difficult to meet with outside of class, doesn't show up to set up appointments and kicks you out when HE is done talking. Has review sessions but doesn't help, expects students to answer their own questions. I'm honestly learning more from youtube than him. He should probably get a 0
Worst professor I have ever had in my life. He is super disrespectful and thinks he is funny when he is not
Professor Monte is not a good professor. He makes many mistakes on exams, is very difficult to meet with outside of class, and spends lots of time talking about the history of organic chemistry, and then rushes through the course material. Exams are extremely difficult (averages are 50%) and his practice tests are no help. Avoid him at all costs!
Because of the Stepanova fiasco, I've had Monte and Dr. S. Monte lectures, which helps you learn the material. But he also has exam averages around 50%, which is what he wants. When he saw our class average was 80%, he said that was way too high. Also, he curves, but does it so the final class average is a 70%. However, he has a C at 59-69%.
Dr. Monte is the most unprofessional professor I've ever had. He gives out exams that are multiple choice/matching and the length of them are ridiculous. He also shows up to class 5-10 minutes late every exam day. Also, we learned about half of our exam material 2 days before the exam. We have not had an exam average yet that is passing.
By far the wors tprofessor I've ever had. Extremely unorganized, and talks down to students. Class average is in the 60's and he is constantly rushing and unorganized. He taught most of the last exam the day before the test, and was being obnoxious saying the test was "light work." He kicked us out when our class period was over when he was late.
The chemsitry department in general at this school has failed its students this semester. If you are a chem student at la crosse, i suggest u stear clear of this man and the department. Pick a different school. They do not care about your success. Monte is absolutly awful, condenscending, and ultimately you wont learn anything except how to cry
Most unprofessional, inappropriate, and unorganized professor I ever have. This man had made me decided to completely switched my major and change my aspiration. The work in this class was so overwhelming that I was burnt out, and it was affecting my other courses. Just don't even think about taking Monte. At all.
The way he treats his students he should be fired. He is rude condescending late to class and just a horrible person. If he was in any other profession he would have lost his job along time ago. I think we should start a petition to get him fired. He makes UWL look bad and Im telling everyone I know to stay away from UWL because of him. Stay away
Honestly dont know how this man is still aloud to teach, the entire semester was a mess!! By the end of the class I had no idea if I would end up with an F or an A. He deleted our canvas course the day after the final, stopped responding to emails, and then posted our grades at 1am the morning they were due. I dont know how I did on the final.
I could go on and on about how awful Dr. Monte is. We never got to see how we did on the final because he deleted canvas the day after the final. He also hasn't responded to any of my emails. There was a huge lack of professionality in his teaching. He makes inappropriate jokes, late to every lecture including the test days. Stay clear of Monte.
Dr. Monte was late to every class by at least 20 minutes. Submitted grades two weeks after they were due. Didn't get a single assignment handed back throughout the semester.
Monte is a jerk and a creep. He is constantly checking girls out in class and says inappropriate things often. If he's not insulting you he's saying something gross or creepy. He doesn't grade. He obviously thinks he's very cool and brilliant but in reality he's just a disgusting old man who should be fired but probably won't be.
This guy is mean, acts like he is better than you, and it is sad to watch. Why this guy isn't fired is beyond me. He is a stain on the university and will make you regret ever taking a science major. He is also a creep, makes inappropriate comments in class, and was put on leave in the past. Department chair supports him too, so he isn't going away
Dr. Monte needs to manage his time during lecture much better... hardly any time to write down what he is saying, let alone process it. He would repeatedly lecture and hold exams during our discussion times, rather than using it to actually DISCUSS. Don't take him if you have the choice, unless he seriously changes his teaching style.
Not a good professor. Doesn't understand the concept of actually teaching & just writes notes while mumbling to himself. Exams are awful & short answer questions are worth multiple points, but doesn't give any partial credit. Tells us the day before the exam what will/won't be on it, but then things he said not to bother studying are on the test
The content taught in class does not translate to his tests. There are no assignments outside of 4 tests and a final. His teaching style is unorganized, and he frequently gets practice problems wrong himself. He mumbles. Constantly. If you're in the back half of the classroom good luck. Horrible, horrible professor. Try to avoid him if you can.
Monte isn't a terrible person, but he is a terrible teacher. His exams are hard and you'll only succeed if you teach yourself from the book. He doesn't give partial credit and will put things on the exam that nobody has ever heard of. He mumbles and writes things on a notepad for students to copy. The only pro is that he offers lots of extra credit
Monte is a horrible professor, I have absolutely nothing good to say about him. He mumbles constantly and literally lies to you about what you will be tested on. Exam averages are really low and even with extra credit everyone I know is getting a C or worse. Avoid at any cost.
Professor Monte averaged 52% on the exams for the semester, including the final, in a class where you are only graded on exams. He offers just enough extra credit to get the average to a low C, which is barely above 60% for his grading scale. No study guides, no homework, and when you asked what to study, he would say your notes. Don't take him.
I was expecting worse based on his reviews. His exams are tough but you will do well if you study a lot and have a decent attitude. Ochem is hard no matter the professor. I taught myself lots of content. Go to office hours. Lectures are unorganized. Condense your notes, learn the mechanisms. It is possible to do well in his class.
In defense of Dr. Monte - ochem is hard and this was his first time teaching one semester ochem in 20 years so he was a little unorganized. I went to his office hours quite a bit and we had good convos and he was helpful. I wish there was more homework to balance out the exam grades but he does do extra credit to help. Learn mechanisms and grind.
Monte was a great dude. This is a VERY tough class, and it takes a lot of work, but it's also 2 semesters worth of ochem in one, so that should be expected. Practice LOTS of problems from the book, know all the MOD's, and put in the effort and you'll be fine. He's easy to talk to, just ask him to use the microphone in lecture, and sit in the front.
I thought Monte was a funny guy and always willing to answer any questions that I had during lab. He can be a tough grader, but in the end, he curves his grading scale. Don't really know why his ratings are so low...
Monte gets a bad rep... O-chem is a hard class, and he really does want you to succeed! He gives easily attainable extra credit to help. You will need to practice on your own outside of class, but you would have to for any o-chem class. The grade is pretty much just exams, but he is willing to be flexible, and he will help anytime.
Organic Chemistry is hard. However, Professor Monte made things harder than they needed to be. Many lectures were not organized and went off-topic of the conversation. We often were behind on lectures and were still expected to know what was not taught in lectures on exams. He can be helpful but his help tends to be more confusing.
We had four grades the entire semester: Exams 1-4. And a final. Genuine guy, but so hard to follow along with in lecture. Also, good luck trying to follow his notes if you miss lecture. For how hard organic chemistry is, he doesn't make it any easier. We were behind the whole semester so we took 3 exams between thanksgiving week and finals week.
Monte's lab keeps you engaged, and lectures just enough to make sure you get what is going on. He really enjoys talking about drugs and how they work lol
While Monte does get a bad rep. I believe that he really does care about his students. His class is very challenging if you don't show up, and understand what he wants you to know for the few exams. I strongly recommend if you start falling behind, go to the tutors or find a friend to study with. Saved me from retaking the class.
Monte is a very cool guy. He is hesitant to give out a perfect score on lab worksheets but in the end he curves the class's grade. He is thorough while lecturing but if you have a question, he is very willing to answer it. Also lets you use all previous materials on lab exams.
Monte is an interesting dude. He is reluctant to give perfect scores on worksheets and only did so because he was 3 weeks behind on grading. He was also hesitant to answer questions from students and often stated, " I don't know." The midterm and final exam are easy if you know what you are doing. Lab was not hard, I wouldn't take him for lecture.
Aaron is a good professor. I was scared when I got him and read his reviews but you will be fine. He lets you not take the final exam if you get an average of 90% on exams, gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I skipped class regularly and got an 100% in this class, if you study well for exams you have all the resources to succeed.
