I quite liked him and the class. The class material was difficult but he explained it very well and his personality made it so much more interesting. There were two tests that were fairly easy as well as a 7ish pg paper. We did not use the book. I would recommend this class!
He is a really nice guy who is kind of quirky but really loves philosophy. Textbooks are optional and we never use them. Attendance is essential because he never posts any notes online. Tests are easy because he only tests on what he gives in notes. This guy is great in his intro to phil class and ethics. I highly recommend.
This guy is awesome. He is very nice and always jokes around. There is only 4 grades all semester. 2 tests, a 7 page paper and your participation. Never had to open the book. All of the answers on the test are directly from the notes. You will need to study a little. One of my favorite professor I have taken at ODU. I highly recommend him.
Great professor! Take his class definitely. The tests are easy if you study and the paper is easy if you have a topic that has a lot of information on. STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY it is your best friend. The material can get confusing.
Takes hard subject matter and makes it understandable. He's funny and entertaining.
YOU DON'T REALLY NEED THE BOOK, TESTS ARE ONLY HARD IF YOU DON'T STUDY, EXPLAINS AND GOES INTO DEPTH WITH MANY EXAMPLES TO MAKE SURE WE UNDERSTAND, SOME GROUP ACTIVITIES, DON'T SKIP CLASS, TAKE NOTES. SARCASTIC AT TIMES BUT NICE PROFESSOR. TAKES A WHILE TO GRADE ASSIGNMENTS. WOULD TAKE HIM AGAIN
Awesome class! Really made me think through how I make decisions. Class attendance necessary, but entertaining.
I have taken him twice and gotten As in both classes. Amazing professor who truly cares about his students. Teaches difficult information in a way that makes sense. Uses real life examples. Take him!!!
This was by far my favorite class! amazing professor and so funny! Some of the work was challenging since it has a lot of information but all his tests were open notes! Easy A class. Never homework except the extra credit and four writing assignments he had. Great professor! highly recommend.
Philosophy is a required course that most students (including myself) dread. He made the subject very easy to understand. All tests are online & open notes, only 4 writing assignments 2 are from philosophic readings, offers extra credit. Great professor!!
Funniest guy I know. makes you think. Attendance is a must because his notes are not available online and he will not give them to you. Was not interested in Phil and he made it very entertaining. 3 tests online, 4 assignments, and extra credit that you have to work hard for.
Really great teacher. His lectures were interesting. There is a lot of note taking in this class. He does take attendance every class. Don't use the book much but there are a few assignments that are easier to do if you have the book. He interacts with the students, makes you question some of your core beliefs. Enjoyed going to class.
Probably the funniest professor that I have. He's extremely nice and will help you if you go to him. The class is simple for the most part but some of the readings in the book are confusing. When doing his assignments more is always good.
Probably the funniest professor that I have. He's extremely nice and will help you if you go to him. The class is simple for the most part but some of the readings in the book are confusing. When doing his assignments more is always good. Try to go into detail.
One of my favorite professors! In intro to ethics you only have four grades. You get this long paper on a moral topic, but it isn't that bad. He takes attendance so you have to go go class. You don't really use the textbook. He's so funny! When he uses examples they're usually out of the ordinary and hilarious. He also dresses really nice! :)
My favorite professor freshman year. He's honestly hilarious and makes the lectures not boring. But if you don't show up, you won't pass because the tests are literally based on notes in class. But other than the 3 tests, theres not too much work. I would definitely recommend taking him if you have the opportunity.
All tests are online, only a couple homework/projects, notes aren't posted on blackboard so you have to go to class. Really funny guy, class is fun, makes a lot of jokes and tells funny stories.
THE EASIEST AND BEST PROFESSOR EVER! You just copy and paste what he says too on the slides he shows in class for your tests and you will get an A every time. Participation matters. Don't let him catch you on your phone he will dock your grade for it. but overall my favorite teacher. Oh if you miss 11 classes you will automatically fail.
Nachtigal is hilarious! Awesome professor. There are only four grades in the semester so be careful though. 2 tests, 1 long paper, and class participation, so go to class and take notes and study them cause the tests are based on those. Not a very tough grader and you do not need a textbook. He makes the class really fun
Professor Nachtigal is EXTREMELY straight forward with his material and what you will be tested on. If you show up and take his notes, you will get an A. His writing assignments are heavy, but that is to be expected for PHI. He is a very entertaining teacher and makes the material far more enjoyable to learn. I recommend him at ODU & TCC!
2 tests, one paper 2500 words about 10 pages. Class is fun. Actually pretty interesting. Professor is cool and funny. Take notes and study or you won't pass.
Professor Nachtigal is an awesome person. Not a great professor. Only 4 grades with one in class test, 10 page paper, participation, and a take home test. Don't skip or you will fail. The tests are dumb hard even after studying. Prepare to be criticized on your paper that you will work extremely hard on. Take a different professor if you want an A
Prof. Nachtigal is a fantastic instructor. He is able to take a relatively straight-forward topic and add colorful commentary. Be forewarned though, your participation matters, but he will give you plenty of chances to talk towards the end of the semester. There are only 4 grades (2 tests, one research paper, and class participation). STUDY!!!
This class was very hard but Professor Nachtigal was so great at explaining everything in depth to the point where I felt like I knew what was going on. This class is just an introduction, and he explains himself that in order to find your ethical stance, you have to take another class because some people can not make up there mind in such time.
Professor Nachtigal is absolutely hilarious, and lightens up the boring subject of philosophy. Some assignments are a little lengthy, but he isn't a super tough grader. All his test are online, so are obviously open notes and as long as you actually attend class, and take notes while you're there you'll pass no problem.
I was not looking forward to taking this class but he made it one of the most interesting and fun classes I've had so far. He's a great professor. Strongly recommend.
He teach really well, I like him. He's someone you can Met and he will help you out with anything he have respect for everyone. He's funny.
Great professor, really funny. Only 4 grades in the semester (2 tests, 2500 words paper, and participation). If you take notes and study for the tests you will be fine. Takes praticiption really serious. If you don't attend class or participate, you will lose points. Be ready to be criticized!
Prof. Nachtigal is a great professor, very interesting and funny, he will make the class interesting and enjoyable. Make sure you show up to class everyday, and take the notes. Even though you only have 4 grades, 2 tests, a paper and participation its not bad at all.
I really enjoyed this class because he explained many theories through examples and relating them to things that happen in every day life. He's a funny professor and really captures your attention. He only has two tests: the midterm and the final. There is also a research heavy paper that he gives you the entire semester to complete.
His class challenged me substantially, /: well as expand my knowledge on intellectual and moral decisions that can be made in life and what type of philosophies people might express and what they base their decision making off.
Professor Nachtigal is hilarious and an awesome teacher. The only books you need are like $7 and you only read like 20 pages out of each just to do 2 assignments. He tells you what to write down in the power points and the tests are exactly what's on the power points. Great class.
There is one big paper and two tests (including the final) so grades to all those count. You need to attend class and participate in order to pass, but his lectures are pretty interesting.
One long paper is all the writing you have to do, just start early and make sure you get all the notes.
You take so many notes, you HAVE to study your notes periodically, 10 page essay required, 2 tests and participation
Good Professor
He's a really cool professor. He makes ethics a very interesting topic. He has 2 tests (essay & multiple choice) all his questions are honestly in the notes that he gives you, 10 page essay, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!! & participate. I would def take him again.
Nachtigal is a great professor. You will receive a 2500 word argumentative essay (you choose the topic) at the beginning of the semester that is due towards the end of the semester. DON'T wait til the last minute or else you will stress trying to write it. There are not a lot of graded assignments so do good on the test. Study and you'll do fine
Mr Nachtigal is a great teacher just a bit of work and lectures
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. He has a great personality and makes class very entertaining. However, there are only 4 grades in the class, if you're not okay with that. Don't take it. You have two tests, a 10 page paper, and participation. Go to class. Do not skip. I would definitely take this class again, make sure you show up and participate.
professer Nachtigal is a great teacher he really makes you think about things in a much different perspective, overall i would recommend Professor Nachtigal to students taking ethics, just be prepared to work hard and think even harder.
In his class, you can't have more than 7 absences or you fail. Although you don't have to be at every class make sure you still get the notes. In the class you basically have 3 grades for the entire semester test 1, the ethics paper, and test 2. The paper is the hardest part of the class. It must be around 9-10 pages but if you start early it's ok.
Great teacher, hilarious and makes the class fun. Class gets confusing but he helps you understand the best he can
Professor Nachtigal is a great philosophy teacher. He makes class enjoyable and I was never bored. The material we learn is interesting and it's taught in a way that makes it easier to understand. Definitely try to get into one of his classes.
Professor Nachtigal was the best teacher I had to start off my first semester. He turns the most complicated lectures into an understandable one and he always asks for class participation. He doesn't give about a lot of assignments at all. I did about 5 assignments this semester. If you're thinking about taking PHIL, be sure to take his class!
By far my favorite Professor at ODU. Professor Nachtigal is passionate about Philosophy and makes the material very easy to understand. In order to succeed you need to be present for discussions, it is Philosophy so verbal participation is crucial. I wish i could have him as my professor for all of my classes! Also doesnt hurt that he's beautiful.
He studied at Oxford, so he's very knowledgeable about the material, You will never get bored in this class. Participating is important. The tests are easy if you take lots of notes and pay attention in class. If you have the option to take him, DO IT! You wont regret it. He makes the class fun and ensures that the material is understood. The BEST!
Dr. Nachtigal was an amazing professor. He kept lectures interesting and respected the views of his students. Because of this course, he encouraged me to pursue a minor in philosophy and I couldn't be more excited! Make sure you show up to every lecture (he doesn't post notes on Bb) and you participate in lecture, especially if you're struggling.
Great Professor! Good lectures, goes off on tangents that are funny. Be prepared to justify why he gives you the class participation grade that he gives you, so go to class and participate!! No textbook needed! Tests are easy if you have lecture notes. Not much work in this class, and is easy if you pay attention.
The tests were online so the notes were tremendously useful. Attendance is mandatory. Extra credit is given at random sometimes. Nachtigal explains his lectures thoroughly. Class flies by quick when we were debating about theories. I also took his Ethics class the following semester. He's good.
Professor is eager to teach, no home work or papers. Class is really easy. Just come to class!!! Prefer 11Am
Is everyone going to just gloss over the fact that this man is the exact same person as Dwight Schrute from the office? 10/10 most entertaining professor I've ever had.
I would definitely take this professor again! The material isn't as hard as you would think philosophy would be, he makes it fun and interesting to learn. He gives funny examples and as long as you attend class and take the minimal notes he gives then you will pass all the tests. One writing assignment, each semester and you have allsemester todo it
Prof. Nachtigal was my favorite teacher this year. His lectures went by really quick and it was the same exact info that was on the tests. He was hilarious and I actually wanted to go to his class everyday. You actually have to study a little bit to get good grades on tests and essays. Not a lot of grades so you should try to do good on all of them
He no longer gives the 10 page research paper, he does give 7 in class essays throughout the semester then drops the lowest two grades and allows extra credit at the end of the semester. Awesome professor!
.Hands down the best Philosophy prof. you could take. Attendance and participation do matter but overall the class is not hard at all. His assignments are given with plenty of notice and aren't too difficult; just require more critical thinking. He will tell you exactly what to write down because it will appear on the test- few hand cramps YAY!
Professor Nachtigal was awesome. I was skeptical at first because I read he that he assigned a 10 page paper. This is not the case anymore. Instead you do in class timed essays. There are 7 and he keeps the top 5. He also does not require the textbook. Anything he says in class will be on tests. As long as you take good notes you will pass no prob.
I absolutely LOVED Professor Nachtigal! He's definitely my favorite by far, he's hilarious and makes Philosophy easy. There's only about three assignments that are graded, as long as you make it obvious that you tried then you should do fine. He takes attendance but is very understanding. All exams are online and open note!
My second class with Nachtigal, and i don't regret it. I took the Summer session so the days were long, but enjoyable. There are two tests, the first is in class, the second, online. It is imperative that you take notes. 7 essays and he takes the top 5. He makes the material easy to understand and makes class fun. You do work for your grade.
I took Phil110 as well as Ethics with Nachtigal, and i enjoyed every day. Ethics was over the summer and i looked forward to the 3 hour days, simply due to his enthusiastic demeanor. Simply showing up and not engaging in class isn't going to benefit you. 7 essays, 2 exams. Initially the essays seemed impossible, but with studying, you will do fine
Took PHI 226 (Social Ethics) at TCC with Nachtigal, I did not regret it. Amazing teacher. Class was never boring. He gives out in class essays but he will drop your lowest grade.
He is a very good professor and definitely good at explaining this material. He relies heavily on class participation and attendance, so if you participate, you will get a better grade. If you don't show up, I believe for five classes, you will fail. Pretty funny guy and barely any home work. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class.
Great guy
Easiest class ever, test are online. As long as you study the terms for the essays ad take notes, you should be straight.
Good lectures, 3 tests, 1 paper (that is a 100 if you do it), 2 reading assignments with questions, acts like he is a tough grader but he isn't
Professor Nachtigal is a really great professor. He presents the material in such a way that makes it fun since he adds humor to it. He also asks the class questions that make it impossible to not be thinking, so this being a course in philosophy, I'd say he succeeded at presenting the material. Come to class, you won't be sorry.
Honestly, I did not know what I was getting into when I enrolled for this class, it was a pleasant surprise. Teacher is very enthusiastic about the material, and he teaches in a way that will make you laugh. The tests can be a little hard if you do not study, so make sure you go over the material beforehand. GET THIS PROFESSOR.
Doesnt give a lot of grades
Amazing professor who clearly knows his stuff. Impossible to stump. Hands down my favorite professor
He's goofy and he definitely makes the topics relate to everyday life. Tests are verbatim of the notes, all you have to do is go to class and take notes. He gives extra credit and he grades fairly easily. Just do the work.
Good guy and interesting class. Not many grades, but easy to pass.
Graded essays nice and quick! Very dry and intelligent sense of humor which keeps class interesting. Participation is REQUIRED- he grades it pretty strictly. I learned a lot in this class, but I still won't become a philosophy minor. Sorry, Nachtigal
Really engaging. Keeps you interested. Makes you want to learn more about philosophy. Makes lectures fun.
This guy really knows his subject. He gives great lectures and has very few assignments (generally easy). Definitely one of the best all around prof. at this university.
Awesome lectures, makes you think, few assignments. This is the best class/ professor combo at ODU right now. Take him
This class was one of the few classes i looked forward to during the year. His classes were always interactive, you also have to participate because it was part of the grade. Do not buy the textbook except he specifically asks you too. Prepare to write! He is an easy grader, if you use all or most of the terms effectively you will be fine.
Read the textbook and Module content then take module quiz and an essay on the theory each week. There are practice essays that are done with a group that he will give feedback for to get the hang of using all of the terms correctly for the essay.
Take this class. He makes it very interesting and he's pretty funny. 4 tests, all online so you can use notes. Two writing assignments that are also easy, just requires you to think a little bit. Also made us watch the matrix and write a page about it just to make sure we watched it.
His test do not match the notes he gives you in class. When it comes to his assignments, he doesnt let you put a direct answer, its considered wrong. Instead he wants you have a 5 page paper for a simple 10 question assignment. He has a nasty attitude toward some of his students. He goes off topic on rants wasting class time.
Super easy Professor if you do the work and do it well. Only gives four test and you get to do them at home with your notes. There are two writing assignments which require deep thinking. Hes really funny and makes you question your whole existence
He's not a bad teacher. Attendance is mandatory, so GO TO CLASS! If you miss class, you miss a lot of notes. Test are easy, and it's based on your notes. Two writing assignments, that require a lot of thinking and time.
Professor Nachtigal is very easy to understand. He lays out the information in such a way that it makes sense, even if ethics just doesn't connect in your head. He responds to e-mails quickly and works well with OEA, if that applies to you. The only grades you get are timed 30 minute essays and a quiz about every other week, all due on Sunday.
He's funny and attendance is a part of your grade. Just participate and you'll do great
Philosophy sucks in general, so it helps when you have a great prof. Nachtigal is a great lecturer and makes everything slightly simpler. He does not post his slides so GO TO CLASS. He gives 3 papers; 2 are challenging (but could be worse). You do not need to buy any books he provides links. first and last exam are easy the middle 2 are not so much
Graded on attendance, tests every few weeks, and 3-4 very easy papers. You have to buy some books for your papers that are all under $10. He does grade on participation, but I never spoke and showed up every class and received an A for the semester. He is a great person and very knowledgeable on philosophy. I would highly recommend his class.
Funniest and most helpful prof. I've ever had. Had an asynchronous class, he's very easy going with due dates and assignments. Just pay attention in class and take notes and you're good! He's an odd dude but in a good way, it makes it really easy to watch lectures.
Great professor. Clear grading criteria with modules, quizzes, and essays to write based on different philosophers or ideas. Take good notes on the modules and know the different terms for each topic to use in writing essays and you should be all set. Also gives feedback on optional essays written as a group on the same topic that is graded.
Gives really honest and helpful feedback on essays and he truly wants you to do well in his class
He's overall a good professor. He definitely makes you work for the grade, and you get what you earn. He provides you with clear feedback so that you are able to improve. The material is a lot and you really have to read and take notes (FORREAL)!
As long as you read and take notes on the course material you'll pass the class. There is an essay and quiz every other week on the module you learned.
As long as you read the material and take notes, this class is easy to pass. No textbook required, all material for the online class was through PLE. The way he writes makes it easier to understand the material. Expectations for the class are clear in the syllabus. As long as you follow guidelines for Essays they aren't too bad and lowest is dopped
I took this course online which didn't require attendance to his lectures. This course felt a lot more difficult than many of the 100 level courses I have taken. He is quite strict on grading and requires long readings. You'll definitely have to spend a good amount of time thinking and interpreting the readings.
Professor Nachtigal has been an amazing teacher, he clearly expresses what you need to write in class as well as a very direct way he grades his essays. He is really funny and keeps the class engaged. I would highly recommend taking him as your philosophy teacher he will make learning ethics very interesting.
Nachtigal was awesome! Take him over anyone else. Entertaining during class to listen to. Be ready to take so many notes. They will save you so much! For us, exams were online with an in-person class, and it was open notes. The internet won't help you only he will so ask him he likes those who ask for help.
The first time I actually learned something I felt was worth learning in a long time, this class made me re-evaluate my life and my mindset for the better wouldn't pick any other prof.
Professor Nachtigal is a great professor who wants all his students to do well. There were 7 timed essays (which were the tests), but he only takes the 5 highest scores. There were also 4 quizzes as well as the final. You can use ALL your notes for everything which is extremely helpful. As long as you take good notes, you will be fine.
Long lectures (listen at 1.5x speed) when really all you need are the slide notes. Test questions all come from slide notes but are worded in ways that make it a little confusing. Timed essay tests and feedback on each essay. Don't expect to get 100%. Ever. All in all a straightforward class and easy to pass if you type quickly enough.
Excellent professor! He makes this class fun and his lectures are terrific! His lectures hold your attention and really help you retain the information he's teaching. Lots of reading is required and he is very clear with his grading criteria. He also leaves great feedback on every assignment!
Witty professor, makes jokes during his lectures. He literally tells you what to include in essays and what will be on quizzes. He takes your top 4 essay grades which is great considering the prompts are challenging and you only have 30 minutes to apply the terms and format a good response. He provides good feedback and tells you what to include.
His lectures are long, but you should pay attention. He will tell you what notes to write in the lecture. The quizzes are open notes and questions come from the notes, but they aren't direct quotes. You will have to understand the lecture to pass the quizzes. I made two 100s on essays, so it is possible if you use his very detailed feedback.
The video lectures could sometimes be very boring but most of the assignments were fairly easy. He did give some extra credit opportunities and would drop 2 of your lowest scores on some assignments. He also gave a lot of advice which was helpful for future assignments. Short essays are timed, but after a while, you find ways to deal with it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class and would recommend it to anyone interested in philosophy. His lectures are fun and witty. The course inspired me to pursue phil outside of class and has redirected my academia trajectory. 100% suggest taking this course!
Professor Nachtigal's PHIL303 class is engaging and manageable. His detailed feedback and flexible grading policies make it easier to succeed. Unstuck ai and class notes are helpful study tools.
Really good professor, he actually does lecture videos which are so much helpful and are entertaining. He also lets you know to note something that will be on the test. The essays and tests were easy once you get the hang of it, but don't expect a 100% on the essays. I use more terms than he asked for and he still found a way to give me a 94 :/.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Nachtigal lecture videos are very detailed and cover everything you need for quizzes and essays. He also gives great feedback.
