Aaron is awesome! He really knows how to speak to a crowd of college students. He has the whole hippie dad thing going which I think is awesome. He isn't afraid to tell you the nitty-gritty details of his life which just add to his amazing lectures. Even though this class is awesome his tests are tough. I have not gotten above an 80 on them.
Fun class, lectures can be long and boring at times. Tests are very hard- the information is vague and the tests aren't very specific. Would not recommend as an easy gen ed.
Peeks was awesome!! I never really got into sociology but his lectures made it so interesting! Careful on his test, make sure you study. But if you put in the work it's a relatively easy class. Lectures are super fast as long as you stay focused. Text isn't really necessary, he covers everything in class.
he's a great lecturer and he knows how to talk to college students, interesting things he teaches. Tough tests, more application based and not clear-cut definitions. killed my gpa though
Loved this class and everything we learned in it! Peekes is a great lecturer and makes class enjoyable! Would definitely recommend this class. The tests are hard though because theyre all application based and very opinionated but if you go to his office hours to fight for your answers he gives you extra points. You shouldnt skip class
Aaron is cool and really down to earth, also very honest which I respect. He's pretty funny too! His lecturestopics are very interesting and it's a lot of discussion for a big class, which is cool. However, his exams are impossible - he does everything he can to trick you. You really have to understand the concepts backwards and forwards.
One of the best teachers I've ever had at JMU! Such a nice guy, lectures are extremely interesting and you learn stuff that actually applies to the real world. Tests are a little tough but he's willing to help as much as he can. Definitely recommend taking Aaron's class!
Peeks is great!! He is really passionate about what he teaches which makes the class really interesting. Bring a laptop if you can because you basically just write what he says. Doesn't use organized slides. His tests are REALLY hard. Bombed both of them. But if you go to his O.H. he will go over it with you and possibly give you points back
The best class I have ever taken at JMU. I one hundred percent recommend this class to anyone searching for an interesting gen ed to take! The class is not inherently challenging, but sometimes correct answers can be confusing. Questions on tests are long paragraphs and you choose the definition that aligns with it best. Amazing teacher and class.
Best class I am taking this semester!!
He is very passionate but his lectures give a lot of information and it is hard to tell what you should take notes on. Always do the homework he emails you because there is likely a pop quiz
His lectures are very interesting and Peeks is hilarious, but it's hard to know what to take notes on. The tests are pretty tough, and there are very few assignments or quizzes in his class so every grade counts. Overall a great class, very eye-opening and applicable to the real world.
Peeks is very engaged and makes class go by quickly. His tests are not easy but they are also not hard, and he gives you the opportunity to use notes on his tests. There is no attendance policy and the homework assignments are occasional, short, and easy.
Awesome class!! Not very many assignments. Always available and willing to help. Very cool guy who is passionate and straight forward in his lectures. The book is optional but buy if you are struggling, concepts and some examples he tells in class are straight from there and he gives the page numbers on his powerpoint.
Peeks is an awesome guy and his class is very interesting. But if you just are looking for an easy A this class isn't for you. There are very few grades so tests are big and they are by no means easy as they are all application based. It's frustrating because you will really like this class, just probably won't get that easy A elective grade
This was my favorite class I've taken so far at jmu. Aaron is such a cool guy, he's literally that hippie dad you just want to sit and talk to. His lectures are amazing and he really makes you look at the world in a different way. His tests are hard because they're all application based but if you go to him he'll help you out. Recommend 10/10.
This was one of the most interesting classes I've taken at JMU! tough tests but lectures are soooo interesting and relatable. Not that many assignments except a few little quizzes which you can expect and 2 exams and a final (not cummulative!) Overall, would definitely recommend!
Aaron is so awesome. He really makes Sociology interesting with all of his crazy life stories. He is such a chill professor. Make sure you read and watch the videos he gives, because there will be a not so "pop" quiz. His tests are really hard but you have to really work to get a good grade. I would take again because he is such a cool dude.
Peeks was amazing. He's just a regular dude who happens to have a doctorate in sociology as well as a certification in instructing yoga. His lectures are inspiring, and he's very personable/hilarious. However, his tests are tough, but if you study you'll do fine. I would definitely take again. He's so weird but I loved every minute of the class!
He isn't an unreasonable guy. Definitely have to work for your grade. His lectures are long and jumpy. His powerpoints are mishmoshed and all over the place. Need to write down every word that comes out of his mouth. His grammar on his tests isn't the best which distracted me. Barely curves. Exams are everything. Screw one up and you're done for.
Aaron was awesome. Although I didn't get a stellar grade in his class, it was really interesting and I looked forward to going to it. Just make sure you make posts on the discussion board and do a bit of studying and you'll be good.
Lectures are very confusing and his powerpoints are worse. He makes you post in a discussion board for credit but never tells you how much to post. Make sure you post at least twice a week throughout the semester because he takes off points for waiting until the last week. His tests are very confusing so make sure you memorize all the statistics
Aaron is safely one of the best professors I've had. Teaches a very interesting class in an incredibly inspirational manner, while making it fun and open for every kind of personality. HERE'S THE TIP: MAKE AS MANY DISCUSSION POSTS AS YOU CAN THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. The discussion posts brought my grade down a ton :( but I strongly recommend him.
Aaron is an amazing professor and his lectures are thought-provoking and interesting. The tests are hard, so hardcore studying is needed. Always watch the videos that he sends over canvas because he has "pop quizzes" on them, but they are purely to check whether you saw them and are only 1 or 2 questions. Do the discussion board posts!!
Favorite professor I've ever had hands down. Difficult class but so worth taking.
This class was awful. I worked so hard, and studied so much. Peaks doesn't give clear rubrics and the grading seems to be subjective. The tests are so unclear, some questions seem like repeats but have different answers. The notes we take in class are not helpful for the tests AT ALL.
Overall, not terrible. Lectures were very insightful and entertaining. There is a decent amount of work. BEWARE of the discussion board online, it can really hurt you at the end of the semester so try to post as much as possible. I would recommend going to office hours. Tests are tough and gives easy participation quizzes.
Aaron's class is really interesting and I love listening to his lectures. That being said, his class stressed me out so much! He is very unclear on his grading criteria for projects and assignments, and his tests are difficult. The discussion board felt like a cloud of gloom that followed me around because it was an assignment that never ended.
I have to say this mans tests Are ridiculous.... there is no way to study for them, I got a B, but that was very lucky... I worked so hard and barely got a B. He makes class interesting.... but beware this guys tests are brutal. if you skip class you will not do well on the tests since his questions are vague asking what he said that one class etc.
Peeks is really cool but his test questions are insanley ridiculous, most are very vague as well and the ssignsments he gives are pointless. Great lecturer though and is really passionate about what he teaches
Hell yeah I would take it again. Tests are tough and vague but he's hilarious and really leaves an impression on his students I absolutely recommend him
This professor has changed so many things for me. He has a few big assignments, and a lot of mini easy assignments. He gives great feedback. IF YOU SKIP CLASS YOU WILL FAIL. His lectures are never boring. I would take this class again just to listen to him because he is so powerful. Great professor. If you are interested in sociology i suggest him.
I really love this professor. He's so cool and down to earth; you can really tell he cares about what he is teaching. Attendance isn't mandatory per say, but you will do better if you go to class. Sometimes we have random pop quizzes, and every Friday you get to turn in notes that you can use on your exam. It's a really cool class.
Aaron is a great guy, his lectures are entertaining and easy to understand. The material itself is pretty straightforward, but some questions on his tests are rather vague and very conceptual. If he assigns work to do outside of class, such as a video to watch or article to read, I would suggest doing it because he likes to have quizzes on them.
Aaron's lectures are awesome, he is so passionate about what he is teaching but does not put much on his power points nor puts them online. There is also not a mandatory textbook for this class so studying is challenging. His tests consist of long questions with random possible answers that make no sense. He makes learning fun and enjoyable.
Peeks is an awesome dude. Super passionate about what he taught, lectures were super interesting. Uses Blackboard instead of Canvas b/c he has a discussion board you're required to post in throughout the semester. Don't skip b/c test questions are vague and refer to random things he mentions in lectures. And do the mini assignments! they help a lot
Peeks is a very passionate professor. I enjoyed listening to him teach because he made class interesting and funny. However, he's a very tough grader for no reason. Post on the discussion board 2-3 times a week because apparently posting once a week will only get you a 75% even if your posts are thought provoking and weave in course material.
Peeks is super passionate about what he teaches. However, he is a wicked tough grader for no reason. I never found his test to be that hard; they're a mix between application questions and very specific things mentioned in class once. If you're prepared to work for your grade and want to actually learn, take him!!!
He doesn't put much information on his powerpoints and doesn't post them online. He also doesn't use a textbook for a lot of things so studying is complicated. His lectures are interesting because he is so passionate about what he teaches but tests are hard because everything links back together so it' hard to find the exact right answer.
Peeks Mease is my absolute favorite professor so far at JMU! He is so inspirational and easy to relate to, hes very passionate about what he teaches and uses many real life examples which makes his lectures easy to understand. I would recommend taking his class! Many pop quizzes so be sure to watch assigned videos/articles!
he's great. lectures are awesome, but everything is vague. he doesn't post powerpoints and if he did there isn't much on them. studying for tests is hard and he gives random quizzes.
This class is lecture based, but the lectures were very interesting and engaging and Peeks is very good at relating information and making concepts easy to understand. Tests are quirky, but not very difficult. Some assignments are a little bit unusual, as the material is not specific to each assignment. Would definitely take him again.
I loved Peeks and this class! His lectures are eye opening and inspiring. Occasional pop quizzes. Do the discussion boards. Tests are difficult but managable.
I have never left a class so inspired to make a positive difference in the world. Dr. PeeksMease not only really cares about what he is teaching but his students too. He is passionate about making the world a better place & presents material based on evidence. Always approachable & even came back to campus one night to meet with me in the library.
Peeks is an awesome guy and clearly cares about this class. I always looked forward to going to lectures. Tests can be tricky and there are pop quizzes, but if you want to actually learn something about sociology, definitely take this class!
lecture-heavy, lectures were inspiring. 2 difficult/frustrating projects-a video and a discussion board project. Discussion board is graded against your peers'. Class is out of minimal points/A's are critical. Tests heavily based on examples/stats given in class, but you make weekly cheat sheet. Gives pop quizzes. Will help during office hours.
very passionate about the subject which makes the lectures very interesting. He does not post lectures anywhere so make sure to attend and take good notes, his tests are very lecture-based. He was very fun and engaging, a little out-there but a great class.
really cares about teaching & his students. I never wanted to miss class. brings in lots of personal examples & is not afraid to bring up topics that other professors avoid. he's funny, approachable, & really just amazing. take his class & you won't regret it. I constantly apply what we learn to my life. didn't get the best grade but I don't care
Hands down my favorite professor at JMU. I loved going to his lectures and listening to what he had to say, that being said you MUST go to his class. He does not post PowerPoints and everything from the tests come directly from his examples in class, however he curved every test significantly. Take him if you can, best professor for sociology
Took this class at 9am and it was the only class I have ever took that I did not want to miss one class. He really wants his students to learn the terms and theories but I kept thinking about the stuff outside of class. I can honestly say that I am a better person. I had a friend who took the same Soc class from a different prof & she hated it.
Selected awesome readings that were actually relevant. Responds to e-mails quick and e-mailed me to see if I was feeling better when I was sick. Lectures awesome as he provides lots of examples and I actually could relate. Just loved going to this class. One of my favorite profs ever.
Teaches a class that has 160 students in it and makes the lectures feel like he is talking right to you. You can tell he spends a ton of tume on his lectures. Lots of short Youtube videos, news articles, websites, music and whateva. Just was an awesome experience. Take him if you want to learn something that matters for once.
loved going to class. in fact it has been my favorite class at JMU in my 3 yrs. actually emailed him this summer bcause i kept thinking about his lectures. actually skyped with me while he was in europe just to chat. really cares about what he does. will miss not taking his class this fall. just a cool person
Peeks is literally the one of the BEST professors I've had at JMU, and I'm a Jr. The concepts are not the easiest to grasp and makes you think, but the way he explains and lectures makes it much easier. Actually made me think about switching majors. Took him for two semesters (SOCI110 & SOCI140) and still that wasn't enough.
One month had gone by in this class and I switched my major to Sociology. I love this prof. This is an 8am class and I love coming which is not the case for my classes later in the day. Seriously, I have never had a professor that kept my attention or kept me awake. I almost feel weird saying that I have learned a lot in this class alraedy.
I didn't think I would ever say this about a professor but as a senior this is the first B I have ever received. In other words Peeks killed my gpa. But it is also a class I loved and would take again. he loved to teach and really spends time using examples that can relate to students. Loved this class, loved his teaching, but did not love my grade
I am taking Peaks this sem. and as an African-American woman, I have never felt more comfortable talking and listening about issues related to race in a class before. I'm taking an African-American studies class right now and love how we discuss issues about race better in Peaks' class. Thanks Peaks for creating a safe but challenging space. Real.
He has amazing lectures, easy grading guidelines, all tests based on lectures. Take as a gen ed!!!
Every day I honestly learned something new and what is cool is the stuff that I learned actually made me a better person. Connects evertyhing in class to real life and i find myself using what I learned all the time outside of class. Awesome class and prof.
Class was hardest thing i have done bc it challenged me. i normaly dont care about things but i started to after listening to Peeks. And that started messin with me i guess in a good way. well we will see. Really liked this class and Peeks. Oh and my grade might not show it but i really have learned a lot
Dr. Peaksmease can be summed up with one thing I will always remember. He showed us this data and said something like This is how a conservative will tell you to look at it". Then he said "This is how a liberal will tell you to look at it". Then he said "and this is how someone who thinks for themself should look at it". Loved the entire class
Had him during Freshman year and loved him so much. He really cared about the students and wanted the best for us. His lectures was amazing and really inspirational. I would highly recommend that you take him. The class was not easy but if you work for it, you will get an A. Make sure to do the discussion board, can really help your grade.
easily the most engaging prof i've ever had. super passionate and interesting. learned alot about sociology and life. awesome beard.
If you need this class for a gen ed, TAKE PEEKS!!! He is the best professor! He is absolutely hilarious and definitely loves what he does. There are 2 tests and a final with review sessions for both where you get practice problems that are on the test! A few quizzes to go with readings (& give me quizzes) and 14 total opinion discussion post.
Love this class, Peeks uses many personal examples that help you understand the material better. You have to do Blackboard posts and some essays about what you read or what you watched outside of class. There is a attendance/ what you read pop quiz here and there. I have his 8 am class and it is my favorite class that I have taken so far.
Had our last class yesterday and felt sad it was over. If I had Peeks when I was a freshman I would have made sociology my major. Best professor I have ever had at JMU and ima senior. I actually will make the world a better place after Peeks motivated me to get our hands dirty and actually listen to people who you disagree with. Dude is awesome.
His curriculum was very eye-opening but makes you work for your grade. He's funny and I discussed a lot of the material from class with people all around me. Would definitely take Representing Genocide via Film again. Worth the papers.
Really cares about teaching and students. Connects everything to real life and uses lots of examples from his own life so you see how sociology works. I really enjoyed the class even though it was at 8 am. Just an awesome prof.
He makes his lecture super interesting!! He makes a class of a 100 feeling like a class of 10. He is a really tough grader and he gives pop quizzes. You need to do things his way or your wrong. He's tests are completely lecture based but his lectures are very interesting, He does NOT cancel class ever. Overall learned a lot but it was also hard.
Tests are really hard. I mean really hard. They are all application questions and you can't just memorize definitions you have to know how to use them. Other than the tests Peeks is awesome. Made going to an 8am enjoyable although watch out for pop quizzes so you can't be late to class. Really learned a lot but tests are really hard.
Even though I still failed his class due to poor attendance, he was still a great teacher. If you show up everyday to class you will probably get a solid grade. Keep a close eye on your emails if your taking this class because most of his pop quizzes are based off of videos or articles he sent you.
I come from a very close-minded community where I now find myself having a sort of hyper-awareness to issues that I would have normally never even have thought twice about while growing up. Im quite thankful for the new perspective that this class has granted me, and the new tools to help tackle this world that have been provided to me by Peeks.
Overall, he was a great teacher who was caring and funny. The only thing is he is the toughest grader. You may think the class is going to be easy but it ended up being my hardest one. The final project was too complicated and you need to participate a ton to get a decent grade for participation.
He is an awesome professor, but be prepared to put in the work. Really pay attention! He does not assign too many homework assignments, but if he does, he WILL give you a quiz on it the following class period. His tests are super specific to lecture so if you do not go, you will not do well. He made class fun and the topics enjoyable.
Droppin knowledge every class. Learned a ton about sociology but life too. Not sure how he did it but made me care. Guy is legit but hard. Thankful I took this class from him.
really awesome prof. knows his stuff and makes you support your position with evidence. I have become much more moderate in my thinking of crime as peeks always showed data making things more complex than I thought. anyways take peeks if you want to actually understand crime from all positions, not just a onesided position. loved him and the class.
This class was one of my favorites classes at JMU. Peaks is very passionate about what he does and makes the class interesting, even for a 9 am. Not a lot of homework, however when there is you can expect a pop-quiz. Tests are challenging and application based, so it's important to take good notes of all the examples he mentions in class.
I am surprised at how often I am tying concepts learned in class to things I hear or see around me. Sometimes when I watch the news I find myself wondering if the story presented is the whole story or if there were facts left out in order to frame it with a particular message; as a result, I now make an effort to look at all sides of the story.
Honestly, this has been one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. It has made me look at things in all sorts of perspectives and Professor Peeks really did a great job in connecting the topics discussed in class to real life, modern events.
Peeks is truly a great professor and a great person. He tends to give pop quizzes for attendance so do not always skip his class. I really enjoyed his lectures, he has the tendency to relate them to his personal life, which I really enjoyed. Soci 110 is not a super easy class but it is enjoyable.
To be completely honest I did not think this would be a class I would enjoy, but I was very wrong. For a GenEd class learned more than I could imagine. Peeks helped me realize how many times I had the opportunity to speak up about an issue, but did not. After this class, I am not afraid to speak up. If enough people speak up, there will be a change
Great professor that truly taught with his heart and was very helpful outside the class, tests are tough and you better show up to class at least one pop quiz a week .
2nd time taking the class bc i failed it the 1st time. Loved the class both times and learned so much. Best class I ever took once or had to take twice. Would recommend Peeks. Really cares about everything and everyone. Assignments make you think. He is hard though so watch out.
Really really passionate. Cares about what he does and is really engaging. Learning so much about applying stuff from class to my life. Wants us to be better human beings. Love, love, love this class. Super smart and kind and changing my life.
Had Peaks last semester and honestly miss the class. Wish I could have him again. The class wasn't hard grade wise but was the hardest thing for me because I constantly revaluated things I thougt true. I am actually a better person and way more independent in my thinking. The class was pretty freeing if that makes sense. Recommend him really highly
Hated this class. Hardest class I ever took. He comes off as cool in class and during office hours but then he expects so much on assignments. He said I should note the "complexity" and also that I needed to cite sources and dont get me started on the tests. All application questions. Better study. I learned a lot and he is nice but to hard.
Peeks is awesome and the reason I switched to track A which is focused on Crime. Wish he taught more classes at JMU. Love how he repeatedly shows how people will use incomplete data to support their agendas. He made me a critical thinker and writer. He also makes it all relevant to your life and assignments that actually mean something. A+++++
What I really like about Peaks is that whenever I mentioned something in class that questioned what he said, he actually listened to me and I felt like he respected my views. He never shut me down or made me feel small which has happened in a lot of other classes hereat jmu. I just really respect him as a prof. I wish there were more like him.
Really learned a lot in this class about genocide. I keep thinking about the class and I took it last semester. Keeps you engaged and provides a lot of feedback but there is a lot of reading. Really loved the Youtube project and my parents were actually blown away by what I did. First time I ever showed them something I did in college. Loved Peeks
Genocide via Film with him at JMU. It was the most amazing class. He is so passionate about what he teachers. It's never boring. He is a tough grader, and sometimes there's pop quizzes, but just do the readings he tells you too. He makes an effort to hear out everyone's thoughts about touchy subjects (like genocide). You'll take away so much!
Best class and best professor, hands down. He's really inspirational and very much into what he does. Sometimes I forget to take notes because I'm so stuck captured by what he's saying. You will be a changed person after his class, so I recommend taking it!!! Tests are kind of difficult and he is a fair grader. You'll have fun :)
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he makes you want to show up. Interesting lectures and no textbook. 3 easy tests, all multiple choice, 7 discussion board posts, some pop quizzes that don't count for much, and a couple one-page essays and that's it. One of the easiest GenEds you can take and actually enjoy.
Loved this class! He makes his lecture very entertaining and has to be one of the easiest Gen Eds ever! If he mentions something twice ALWAYS write it down, it will be on the test. He is literally the sweetest person ever, he really wants the best for you and he always tries to find a way to relate everything in a way we'll understand. Easy A or B+
Last day of class today and Im honestly bummed. Really loved this class. Such a real person and wants so much for the world. Textbook is optional and there are readings he posts and other materials. Attendance is optional but not sure why youd miss bc the lectures changed me. Best class I ever took here at JMU or anywhere. Hard application exams.
Peeks rocks! Learned a lot about sociology and about myself. Learned to go beyond myself and look at how structures shape me. Declaring a sociology major after this class. Super passionate about his teaching and life. Wish there were more profs like him at JMU. Always in office hours or willing to meet other times. Tough grader and exams but whatev
Watch out because he has an agenda. At first you don't think there is one but by the end you realize there is. At first I noticed stuff like dont be racist and against women and stuff. But he really keeps pushing it on you and basically makes you feel bad for not being against these things or doing good. Cool guy and great lectures but watch out.
One of my favorite classes at JMU so far. Peeks is a really cool guy and I actually enjoyed coming to lecture. There are pop quizzes throughout the semester, so skip class at your own risk, but you honestly probably won't want to! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a gen ed or elective class. If you take decent notes, you'll be fine.
Favorite class. Peeks lectures about really important, complicated, and real-world topics: race, women, religion, the environment, etc. Lectures make you think. Pop quizzes and exams (only 3 exams the whole semester) are pretty specific to his lectures so take detailed notes. Have to do discussion posts online - pretty large part of grade.
One of my all time favorite professors at JMU. I never missed a lecture A) because all exams are lecture based and B) because they were always so great. I always wanted to go in the morning. He does give pop quizzes pretty frequently and exams are all based on lecture, but if you go you will be good to go.
Actually bummed this class is over. Relates everything to real life and shares so many inspring storys that make you want to do amazing things. Emaild me when he got a note from JMU about a medical issue I was having. Made the really large lecture class feel like a small class. Made me laugh, cry, and angry all in one lecture. Really just awesome.
if you want to learn something about something more than just boring memorizing stuff then take Peaks. learned a lot about myself and life. I think about the world in new ways and love all the info about other countries. Im gonna declare a sociolgy major next sem bc of this class and hope Peaks teaches other classes. thx Peaks. Ill be kind! hahaha
Dr. PeeksMease is amazing! I am sad our class is over. I have taken him for a few classes and recommend him for everything! Take good notes, study and do his few small assignments. Review regularly because he does pop quizzes but they are not hard! Attendance is not mandatory but I do not know why you would want to miss a lecture. 10/10 Recommend!!
Really loved this class. I got the textbook and I thought it was useful but my friend did not use it. Loved his lectures as they are really thought provoking. As a conservative I actually found him refreshing because he just cites the data and notes how different sides will use the data. This class really made me a better person. Fav class at JMU.
Really amazing lectures. I learned a lot about sociology and myself after taking this class. But watch out because if you are on the borderline between two grades, he will not just bump you up. I was .04 from a A- and he said in his e-mail that "you earned the grade you earned." Other than that, Peeks is awesome and highly recommend.
I had an A the whole semester and did poorly on my final to finish with a B+. That being said I would still definitely take again. Great professor I had this class Friday morning and didn't mind going at all he keeps your attention. Show up put in a little effort and youll be more than fine.
Peeks is the best. His lectures are so intriguing and entertaining. I always wanted to go to class. His tests are kinda hard and unpredictable but not impossible. If you take good notes during class and talk to him after class you should be fine. He loves getting to know his students and he loves what he does.
Pros: Awesome lectures, responds fast to email, present during office hours, smart, down to earth, inclusive classroom, funny, interesting and worthwhile assignments, fast grader, always willing to chat, practices what he preaches, actually learn stuff that makes you a better person, as a conservative I didn't feel demonized. Cons: None
I took Peeksmease in the spring and really liked his energy. Good guy overall and gets back to email quickly even in the sumemr. Had a question about some work this summer I was doing and he told me to call him so we could talk through it. Not sure if other profs do that. Take hime and you shouldn't regret it. Good guy with good stories.
Not only one of the best professors I have ever had but one of the best people I have ever met in my life. There is no one who is more socially aware than Peeks and he integrates this in class. Incredibly honest and cares about all of his students. Classes are fast paced but organized. Figure out his test style because it is diff and youre golden.
Great lecture style and cool guy. Really smart and genuinely cares about his students. Has good taste in music and was always in his office when he said he would be there. Liked going to class. Learned alot but grading/tests are hard
Take Peeks he rocks!
Peeks is AMAZING! One of my favorite professors I have ever had! He also helped me get an amazing internship! Peeks is the best and I would recommend him any day for any class! Peeks ROCKS
Guy gets your attention in class and keeps it. He knows what he is talking about and knows how to lecture. Never had someone like him who could keep my attention all class. Always wondering what will come out of his mouth next. I really like the class. Not like my other classes. Always moving around and asking questions.
peaks clearly cares about what he does. im not one to really care much in classes outside my major but he actually keeps my attention more than my other profs. he actually read some of my reflection in class so that was cool. if i like him then you probably would to.
Peeks is the reason I became a sociology major. I have taken five classes in the major and while the topic interests me Peeks is a prof who had me thinking long after class ended. I still think about some of the stuff he said. Really liked going to his office to chat. Just made me a better person taking a class from him. I highly recommend Peeks
as semester has gone on its clear peeks is the man. never seen a prof who cares so much about the stuff being taught. tons of passion and just a cool guy who makes you feel like a deer in the headlights. then you snap out of it and are like, that was a close call. i cant recommend him enough.
Only class I love going to. First test was fair but really hard. All application questions which means you gots to know how to take the terms from clas and apply them to situations Peaks comes up with. Really love the class and listening to the lectures
Need to attend class. Lots of pop quizzes. Tests pretty hard. Loves teaching. Talks a lot about race. Get woke on the daily.
Peeks is by far the best professor I have had at JMU. His lectures are super interesting and the book we read was extremely easy to read and funny. The tests were tricky, but if you study his lectures you will do fine! the hardest part is keeping up with discussion boards, but Peeks is so worth it! I learned so much.
Engaging. Passionate. Truly Brilliant.
Not sure why people say his tests are hard. You have to know how to study correctly because it is not just memorizing definitions for the tests. The questions are all about lecture and most are application questions where you apply the terms. I thought the tests were fair and pretty easy. Go to his office hours and he will tell you how to study.
His class has to be one of the best classes I've taken so far, and it even convinced me to change one of my minors to sociology. Peeks is very passionate and knowledgeable about the many social issues affecting the world, and he encourages discussion even in a large lecture. He makes sure to present multiple sides to an issue, amazing lecturer.
his lectures are anything but boring. pop quizzes sound scary but they are not very hard and based on material learned during the previous class. he cares about his students and grades things quickly.
Lots and lots of quizzes. Other than that, I really love going to class. Teaches you how to think and not what to think.
Peeks is such a cool guy. Yes, his class is kind of hard, but it's such an interesting class. I had no idea what sociology even was but somehow he found a way to make it incredibly intriguing. He gives small pop quizzes a lot before class starts , but there are a lot so if you do bad on one it doesn't matter that much. Amazing person, though! Take!
When he talks in class he rarely makes sense at all. I spend the most of my time organizing my notes because he is all over the place and rants about himself all the time. As a general sociology class it should be easier to succeed, he particularly tries to makes things difficult and grade things harshly. Not a good gen-ed to take, don't recommend.
thought it was going to be an easy A, hardest gen-ed i've ever taken at JMU. great and inspiring lecturer, but grades so hard and on few things. Never gives full credit for any assignment and the exams are so hard. Pop quizzes at least once a week so go to class.
Peaks is great. Awesome lectures although I didnt do good on the first exam. Went to office hours and he helped me study much better and got 25% better on the second exam. Very fast getting back to email. Emailed him like 3 times and all three times he responded within 10 min. Lots of interesting and relevant examples in class.
I just love this class. Super inclusive class. Great lectures and I really liked the little assignments. I learned alot about me in this class. Really grown and learned alot. Take Peeks if you want to really learn something but its not a easy A like other gen eds but go to office hours.
Loved Professor Peeks Mease and this class. As an African American woman I really felt respected in the class and especially when he discussed race. Went to office hours and that was super helpful. Go over your notes before class and you should do well. Cool assignments too. Best Gen Ed I have taken at JMU. Go Dukes!!!
Terrible professor!! He wants you to think his way and only his way. Not understanding about outside issues whatsoever. Assignments are stupid and you can never make him happy and always has an issue with what you said. A lot of pop quizzes and there are very few grades. Likes to ask questions on statistics that he barely talks about.
I hate this teacher. He is incredibly boring, with unorganized powerpoints and stories that basically waste time in class. This meant to be a gen ed, not an in depth pile or garbage. The pop quizzes are also terrible. Don't listen to these other reviews.
Peeks is the coolest Professor ever. There are 2 point pop quizzes but if you review your notes frequently you should not have a problem at all. His lectures are really interesting and he is very caring and approachable. Just review your notes and go to class even though it is not mandatory. Barely any homework. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
There are a few tests that are hard. You have to pay attention during lecture and he doesn't post the PowerPoints. He uses Blackboard, which you turn assignments in on and there are two discussion boards you have to post in 7 times each. Make sure you follow rubrics to a tee otherwise you get points off assignments. Cares a lot and very passionate
I love Peeks!! He does 3 tests which are pretty simple if you study all the examples he gives in class. His class is the only Gen Ed I've taken that I actually feel like I'm learning something meaningful. He has 2 discussion post assignments, 1 project, and a few scattered homework assignments. Highly recommend taking this class
Peeks was truly amazing. His lectures are moving and inspiring; you don't even realize you're learning. The level of difficulty on assignments depend on one's strengths as a student; decent writing and analysis skills make a world of difference. In combination with the content and his amazing teaching skills, this class will change your life.
Aaron is okay and all but it really seems like he is just using the class to preach about his own personal philosophies at times. He will show us statistic after statistic that no one remembers and then the tests are 100% just recalling what happens during the lectures. Do not take. I did not enjoy his class at all.
Peeks is hilarious in class & very inspirational. As a freshmen at JMU this was my first 9 AM lecture heavy class, it was hard getting used to it but Peeks made it tolerable. He is very approachable & responds to emails fairly quickly. His tests are more about applying concepts. He does 2 point pop quizzes. I'm going to miss it I highly recommend
Peeks is the most passionate professor I've seen. Approachable and will respond to emails within 5 minutes. Only 3 exams (one is the final) and they are very lecture heavy. You must pay attention in class even though attendance is not mandatory if you want to do well. Many 1-2 point pop quizzes that are pretty easy. Few assignments. No textbook.
Professor Peeks was great. His lectures were very interesting and his tests are lecture heavy so attend class. He also gives 1-2 point pop quizzes that aren't hard but just make sure to review your notes bc you're grade can drop very quickly bc of them and also keep up with DB posts as well. Only 3 exams including the final that is noncumulative.
The best teacher I have ever had. I've never been more interested in a class, and I was genuinely excited to go to his lectures. You can tell that he really cares about what he teaches, and he wants his students to learn. He gives pop quizzes a lot, so look over your notes prior to class. Tests are easy if you study. I highly recommend his class.
Terrible!
Honestly this class is just way harder than it should have been. There are random pop quizzes that weigh down your grade so much. The tests are just recollection of meaningless statistics and videos from lecture. Do not take.
This class was hard. The professor is preachy and I did not appreciate it. Do not take. Thanks.
Peeks is an amazing speaker, but sometimes his lectures are very irrelevant. He ends every other sentences with "and what not" to the point that it's extremely distracting. His tests are hard compared to the seemingly easy material given in class. Loves to give pop quizzes when not many people show up. Good luck if you take his class.
I truly enjoyed going to Peeks' lectures every class day. Although it was not an easy A AT ALL, this class really interested me and the . way Peeks viewed teaching and life itself was different from any other professor I've had. If you want an easy A, I dont suggest this one but if u are willing to work hard and want to be inspired, please it!
I didnt enjoy this class. His lectures arent very helpful and theyre mostly just statistics. Lectures dont reflect whats on the tests and he grades really hard to the point that its impossible to do well. I dont recommend him whatsoever. I usually only get As but I was only able to get a B+ in this class.
hardest gen ed ive taken at jmu... and ive taken hard ones. the tests are basically filled with things he says once in class and if you miss it you're failing the test. Also the pop quizzes are so unnecessary and useless all they do is hurt your grade... and theres like 15 of them. Lectures are also very boring and the grading is too harsh.
Peeks is an awesome dude, but do not take this class if you want an easy A or B. This class requires so much work if you want a decent grade in it. He is a really great lecturer and you learn so much but a little too harsh on the grades for a gen ed.
The class is really interesting and I truly enjoyed going to his lectures. The only issue I have with this class is that it is incredible hard, especially for a gen-ed. I always thought I did much better than I really did on tests and that was always really frustrating. If you want to study harder than ever, take the class, if not I dont recommend.
Avoid at all costs. This class is so much work and not an easy gen-ed. I went to every class, submitted every assignment and still didn't do well. I'm doing better in Anatomy than this class, which says A LOT. Tests are so hard and he does not prepare you for them at all. At the end of the final, he asked us to give him a shoutout, so AVOID HIM!!!
Really terrible professor. The pop quizzes are worthless. The tests are basically verbatim what he says in lecture with small ideas that no one remembers. I cannot stress enough how badly I dreaded this class every other morning.
I did horrible in this class which really sucked as it was one of my favorites. I got A's in all my other classes and ended this one with a d. I have never done this bad in any class i've taken my two years here. Hard for a gen ed and is ruining my gpa but honestly the class was really interesting and i loved hearing his outlook on life.
Really interesting class. He is an amazing speaker, but grades a little tough. Tests require lots of studying and are mostly application problems. Learned a lot from him and his lectures!
I'm a A/B student and got an A in this class. Got a B on the first exam and went to his office hours which helped a lot. He will tell you how to study to do well on the exams so go talk to him. Super approachable and gives you a bonus if you go beyond what he asks for on assignments. Great lectures and learned a lot about sociology and life.
Peeks has been my favorite professor so far! He is hilarious and his lectures are highly engaging. I never minded getting up on MWF's because it meant I got to go to this class. VERY clear about assignment expectations and due dates (only a couple 1 pg write ups). Go to class and review your notes, do your discussion board posts and you'll be fine!
POP QUIZZES. Do NOT take this class unless you fully intend to go every single day. He has so many pop quizzes which sometimes are as simple as "Write a joke and turn it in", but if you are not in class to turn it in, it will deeply affect your grade. Also, the tests are very difficult.
Im pretty sure Peeks writes most of the positive reviews even though he says he doesnt read rate my professor. Asked us to give him a shoutout on this website at the end of our final exam. Tough grader, lectures dont reflect whats on the test, and tons of pop quizzes. Avoid.
Kinda hard for a gen ed but VERY entertaining. I went to every class and studied pretty decently and am not getting an A
Lectures are engaging, but inserts his opinions a lot. If you go to class, pay attention and take notes, you should be fine. If you're used to reading, and taking notes verbatim, memorizing and regurgitating, you may run into some issues. He looks for actual understanding and application of concepts rather that your ability to memorize definitions.
I was at church on Christmas Eve and could not stop thinking about Peeks and his lectures on religion. He made us do this religion assignment that I kept thinking about while looking at people around me. It was a Catholic mass and I was thinking about durkhime and rituals. It just reminded me of Peeks and his great class.
I looked forward to going to my 8 am because peeks's class was so interesting. He is incredibly inspirational and the best professor I have had so far. The class requires effort but you get the grade you work for.
Professor Peeksmease is OUTSTANDING! While yes, the course may be a little challenging at times if you do not pay attention, he makes every minute worthwhile. You can feel the passion he has for what he is teaching, and is such a caring and genuine individual. I would do anything to take his class again, it by far has been my favorite GenEd so far!
Aaron is amazing. He's the best professor I've had at JMU (actually the reason I declared a sociology major) and if I could I'd take him every semester. I actually looked forward to attending his class. TAKE HIM! PLEASE! You won't regret it.
Loved the class but was borderline between two grades and he would not bump my grade. Obviously loves teaching and makes going to class easy but give those of us close to a higher grade a break. No extra credit either
This class ultimately ruined my GPA, which sucks bc it's only a gen-ed. Peeks is a harsh grader and pop quizzes kill you. I studied hard but didn't do well. However, I will say that his class is very inspirational and changes your perspective of the world. Lectures really make you think. To put it shortly: he is woke. Really tough grader, though.
Peeks is a great professor who really makes it enjoyable to learn. I had this class at 9:05 was excited to go every time to see what we were going to learn next. He is a very tough grader, and tests were multiple choice and you had to apply what you learned in class to the test which was hard and gave choices that could all be right. Great guy!
I took this class as a gen-ed requirement and it was by far my favorite class. I actually looked forward to going to his lectures because I always learned something new and very interesting regarding current events around the world. You have to go to class because pop quizzes and exams are completely based on the lectures.
Peeks is funny smart and cares. I wish I had him again this semester. Super engaging and the best prof I have ever had. I still think about the class but it was the hardest because of Peeks challenging me to challenge how I see things. Take him!!!
Great teacher. Presents lot's of different perspectives on things which is good. Liked that he was always in his office when he said he would be. Met with me outside of his office hours. Makes going to class worth it because the lectures are super interesting. Overall great guy and picked up the minor.
Lectures I would listen to even outside of class. Super knowledgeable and good at connecting ideas, challenging views, and getting listeners' attention. Has honestly changed my world view. 1-2 question pop quizzes can feel cheap and make attendance "mandatory". All other assignments tend to be graded-tough and test you almost solely on concepts.
SUCH an amazing class. I loved going to this class, the 50 minutes went by so quick because the lectures were always super interesting. honestly I put in minimal effort and got a B, but I learned so much about the world and life through this class. cannot recommend peeks enough!!
Very nice human being, the material isn't overly difficult, but his lectures can be hard to follow and his powerpoints are a mess. Minimal effort and I'm finishing with a high B. Plus I left almost every class inspired and with my eyes open to something new. Pop quizzes but not a huge percentage of your grade and discussion posts required.
Peeks is going to be the best lecturer you will probably ever have at college. I've never gone to a class every day because I genuinely wanted to hear the professor talk. He is a very hard grader and you probably won't do amazing in the class without putting in tons of work, however, I wouldn't trade the time I had in this class for a stupid A.
Peeks is a really cool guy. His class isnt easy & he makes you work for it. He is quite opinionated but sees things from all sides. There are pop quizzes so check over your notes before class & his test are all application .. only 3 tests & the final isnt cumulative
Peeks is the dude. He is entertaining to listen to and teaches his topic in an interesting way. He does give random pop quizzes but if you skim your notes before class they are easy. Peeks gave a fair amount of "easy assignments" that are helpful to your grade if you miss quizzes. Enjoyed him a lot!
Peeks is honestly amazing. He makes you confront things that youd rather ignore in day to day life. His lectures are the best and its not hard to find the material interesting. That said, dont take his class if you arent going to put in work outside of class. He has small assignments here and there, and they require effort, and also pop quizzes
I highly recommend taking this class, Peeks is an amazing professor. Through this class you will not only get the credits you need, but learn important life lessons to carry on with you forever! I can confidently say this class was my FAVORITE class I have taken in my three years at JMU!! He gives a perfectly fair work load and pop up quizzes.
Peeks is an amazing professor, I would definitely take his class again. His lectures are interesting and meaningful. The pop quizzes can hurt you but you come to class and read your notes from the class before, you'll be alright. There are 3 exams and the final isn't cumulative. There are a couple reflections here and there but they help your grade
He is a great professor and is passionate about what he teaches. It makes the information a lot more fun to learn. He tells jokes and encourages discussion. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you are a few mins late or miss a class you may miss a pop quiz. The tests were difficult compared to the in class material because it is applied. Good prof
Be ready for almost daily pop quizzes. There are a few homework assignments throughout the semester, but overall, not very difficult. The tests are fair as long as you've studied the material. There is no textbook for this class, but one would have been helpful. Peeks is a good professor and quite funny. Makes lectures entertaining.
While all of his lectures are extremely interesting and inspirational, it is really hard to take good notes due to the lack of organized slides and how fast he goes through all of the information. Pop quizzes are given frequently and he is a really hard grader. The tests are also way harder than you are prepared for. Not an easy class at all.
Peeks is passionate, but basically uses his platform as a professor to brag about himself and get praise from students for his ethics/morality. He is extremely rude and condescending to students who participate/give answers in class. Pop quizzes are worthless and cover minute statistics he mentioned one time in lecture.
This class as been on of the hardest classes I have ever taken. There are pop quizzes on a daily based off numbers and stats that were said to you once in the last lecture. Hard to take notes because he never put a lot of words on powerpoints. He used pictures and videos, then expected you to learn something. Test are also hard, having to apply.
Favorite class I've taken at JMU so far. Peeks definitely changed my world view and the class changed me for the better. Lots of pop quizzes on really specific things, look over your notes before each class. He worked w/ me well when I had to miss a test, very caring professor. If you're super conservative then you probably won't like the class lol
I took this class as a gen-ed and it was the hardest class i've taken at JMU so far. He is really interesting to listen to during class but you have to go to EVERY SINGLE CLASS to get a good grade. He does pop quizzes usually on wed and fri so don't even think about missing those days. I studied a cumulative of 20 hours for the final and got a D!
Very difficult for a gened. The lectures are very engaging, but you must go to class and prepare for pop quizzes weekly. You could spend hours studying for the tests and complete all assignments and still receive a low grade. Tests are all application based and he grades pretty tough. Needs to give more opportunities for students to succeed.
one of the best professors I've had so far. the class is tough and you have to work for it, but it's one of the only classes I've taken where I wasn't bored out of my mind at least once. the class is 3 tests each 50-65 questions, easy homework assignments, and 2 question pop quizzes throughout the semester. highly recommend !!
I loved this class! I learned so much. Super interesting lectures that changed my world views and helped me understand why I believe what I believe. Exams are all application based, a few one page papers, and lots of pop quizzes. Not an easy A, but you'll take away more real world knowledge from this class than any other gen ed. Take Peeks!
Peeks is an amazing professor that helped shape my world views and made me want to be better. Hes a great guy but his class is not easy. He gives multiple pop quizzes and if you miss a few it will really hurt your grade, his test are application questions that are sometimes tricky, his class is great but I wish he gave more chances to succeed.
This class really helped me to make me more "woke" and to look at the data when considering global issues. The class requires an average amount of work; there are some discussion posts and writing assignments, with only three tests. The only annoying part were pop quizzes with cryptic questions that can lower your grade. Overall, I would recommend.
I guess what I would say I liked most about Dr. Peeks-Mease is that he really cares. I went to his office several times and he was always there and I felt like he really wanted to help. He also is the best teacher I have ever had but hard. Super engaging and interesting.. I really looked forward to his class and am going to miss it this fall.
I really love Peaks and his class. I leave every class with a new perspective and talk about his class to my friends all the time. He is the most helpful prof ever. I have been to his office around 6 times and he always has lots students there. But watch out bc he also gives out bad grades if you cant apply the material but just ask for help.
I was not looking forward to this gened but Peeksmease has made it a great class. Challenged me to think differently and I actually bring up stuff from class to my room mates so thats cool I guess. I also had to be gone for a week due to medical stuff and Peeksmease emailed me twice to check up on me. No one else did so thats cool.
ha I got my letter published in my newspaper. thanks Peaks! my family is all proud. best assignment I have had at JMU.
He gives pop quizzes random class days that can sometimes be hard, but if you look over your notes right before you will do good. Loved this class so much, wish I could take it again. I learned so much and was always excited to go to class.
I really enjoyed my SOCI 110 class with Aaron. The class can be a little difficult, and you definitely need to go to class if you want to do well, because he posts very little online. I would highly recommend him.
Peeks is a great professor and has very interesting lectures. Do not skip his class or you will probably not get all the information since his notes come from his mouth and not powerpoints. Other than that, really cool guy and very helpful when it comes to needing help.
Amazing professor!!! He really makes learning interesting and really makes you think about the way you live your life... take him!
Take him!! Very engaging and I enjoyed going to his class. One of my favorite professors ive had here, but make sure you go to class because notes are not posted. He is somewhat of a tough grader and tests can be tricky but you will definitely pass if you put in effort!!
I absolutely loved him as a professor! He made me want to go to his class and is a hilarious professor. He is approachable and very kind. I would take him again if given the chance. You do need to go to the lectures and pay attention or youll struggle.
Attendance is mandatory to do well, because all of his test questions come from lecture. His assignments are short and simple and can be completed quickly. He does his best to keep lecture interesting, but it can be bland at times.
Dr Peeks Mease was fine, however is class was all lecture without powerpoints that would help with taking notes, so you have to listen carefully. He often gives out pop quizzes to make sure people come to class, so make sure you look over your notes.
Hes pretty good. Make sure you stay on top of your notes and take GOOD notes, because you never know when a pop quiz is coming, and theres a lot. He keeps the material interesting and I looked forward to his class everyday.
I originally was going to drop this class since I didn't need it, but after the first lecture, I knew I loved him. His lectures are great, though he can be really loud sometimes, and he's always easy to reach. He's passionate about soci and it shows through his teaching. He does give "pop quizzes" every class but sends out what to look over.
Peeks gives pop quizzes very frequently that are very specific. His tests are also very specific and the questions are often phrased from his perspective which makes them a lot more difficult. I wouldn't take the class again for the fact that I took this class as an elective and it was my lowest grade throughout the semester.
Great guy, bad teaching methods. He gives out so many pop quizzes that are so specific that can kill your grade. Extremely tough grader, especially for a GenEd class. The material is interesting, but he ruins it by giving out things that tank your grade. Odds are, this class will hurt your GPA, which is not worth it for a GenEd. Avoid if you can.
Literally my favorite class and professor ever!! His lectures are so engaging and the course materials are interesting. He gives pop quizzes but if you review your notes before class they are super easy. I definitely had to put a lot of work into this class but he gave amazing feedback and I enjoyed the work he gave us. 100% take this class
One of the best professors I have had at JMU! Gives relatable examples in class to help better understand the complex topics. If you don't go to class you won't understand topics because he does not post slides online. His personality and teaching style will make you want to go to class. He gives pop quizzes usually once a week. Great guy!
I had Peeks for Intro and have been part of his book discussion groups and JMUBelievesYou. I have learned so much from him that I took an indpendent study with him. He continues to challenge me and I just really appreciate how he cares and wnats me to produce really high quality work. He is so inspiring and a role model.
You should definitely take him, he makes class so interesting. There is a lot of pop quizzes, but if you read the articles you will do well.
TAKE HIS CLASS IF U HAVE THE CHANCE!!! definitely have to go to lectures to pass because all questions on the exams are based off of what he says in lectures and he has a lot of 2-3 question pop quizzes however his lectures are SO INTERESTING and the man is genius. He really makes you think differently about the world and the work really isn't hard
His lectures are so interesting to listen to, but its hard to know what he is actually teaching you because everything is so abstract. His pop quizzes are so specific even though I went to class and did all of the readings I still did awful on them. Hes the kind of person I would love to have 1 on 1 conversations with but not have as a professor
I really enjoyed this class! His lectures were SO interesting - they made me think a lot about what was going on around me. His pop quizzes were really specific, so that made them hard. I also found the tests to be hard because they're mostly application questions, so you have to think really hard about your answer! I would still recommend though!
Peeks is a charismatic professor and is very passionate about the issues he talks about. The tests are kind of difficult because he will ask questions about things he discussed in class that weren't on the slides. Definitely participate, pay attention, and write down everything mentioned in class. Def wants you to think outside the box
Passionate to an extreme, incredibly intense. Took this as a gen ed and I looked forward to every class. I feel like I know so much more about society thanks to him. The quizzes are fairly difficult though, just because they're so specific.
Really amazing teacher, he opens your eyes about a lot of things. At first figuring out how to take notes from him is difficult but after the first test you get the hang of it! Assessments every 2(ish) weeks and they are very specific so make sure you pay attention during class. He really cares about his students and shares a lot about his own life
One of my favorite professors so far, and i never even got to meet him in person. Even through zoom, his class was such a worthwhile investment of time. He makes you work for your grade, but i saw that challenge as a good thing. TAKE HIM.
As long as you take detailed notes you can pass the class and the tests. We did not use the textbook a whole lot, but we did use it some. He gives amazing lectures that are eye opening and include useful information that goes beyond the classroom.
He is very funny, relatable, and cares a lot about his students. This class is the most engaged I've ever been as a student. His lectures held my attention. All of the assessments are solely lecture based, so make sure to take good notes. He is also very easy to reach outside of class, and will always help you understand the material if you ask!
He gives great and interesting lectures but you probably wont do well unless you write down exactly everything he says. His tests are very specific and he asks random questions about stats or little facts from five lectures ago. it was pretty frustrating. Hes a tough grader and very test heavy. hes an interesting and captivating person but hard
Gives really incredible and inspirational lectures, although at first they might seem a little complex and you won't know when to take notes down. But once you get the hang of it, class becomes a breeze. All of the quizzes were open note too, with the answer usually hidden in a lecture somewhere. Also just a really friendly and open guy.
Very much a tough grader, will not do well if you don't write everything he says down.
Peeksmease is one of my favorite professors at JMU so far. This class was challenging, the tests were very hard and based off of his tests. He grades the homework very hard, but you only have 1-2 homework assignments per section. He is a great teacher, and makes the class so interesting and he really cares about the success of students.
Dr. PeeksMease is a wonderful professor who gives thoughtful lectures that make you think about the world around you. He shares personal stories to relate to the subject matter being taught and carefully weaves in themes throughout the course. My biggest warning is that he tests you heavily on very specific statistics given in the class.
Here to tell you that an A is attainable in this class. I stand with everyone else in saying that the test questions were very specific to his lectures, and the key to doing well in his class is taking in-depth notes. His lectures were so interesting and engaging though. Highly recommended Peeks.
Attend lectures and take notes and you'll be fine
Peeks is the best professor! He shares really interesting insight on a lot of topics and makes you think in a new perspective! Make sure that your notes are super detailed and you write down statistics he shows and the examples he tells you! Once you get the notes part down its a super enjoyable class and Peeks makes sure you stay engaged!
I didn't do well in his class, but I would still recommend it. It is a very interesting and informative class and he is a phenomenal lecturer. He's accessible outside of class and responsive to emails. Despite not getting the grade I wanted, I got a lot out of this class. Beware though his tests are very specific and were ultimately my downfall.
If you're willing to work for your grade take him. I am not a great writer and I don't do well on assignments EVER. If you don't write down EXACTLY what he says in the lecture you will not do well in this course. Great personality and his passion for the course, just definitely don't take if you're someone who does better with notes from textbook.
Peeks is one of my fave professors here by far. We had a textbook but it was like $5 or something. The lectures are super insightful and deep, and he is easy to contact outside of class. If I could give you one word of advice, TAKE NOTES. ON EVERYTHING. even the pictures on the slides. The tests are crazy specific but if u take good notes its fine.
Peeks is very passionate about teaching and the topics discussed in class. However, tests are so specific that he expects you to practically remember everything and every statistic he mentions in lecture. I would say to just take very detailed notes but that's what I do and still do not have the best grade.
Peeks was an interesting teacher and cared a lot about the things he was talking about. However, this class is extremely lecture heavy and even if you take very detailed notes you still may not do well. Write down everything he says. The class consists of a few assessments and a few written assignment. Make sure you follow every direction he gives.
Peeks is an extremely passionate professor and you can tell he loves what he teaches, but his teaching style is questionable. You need to write EVERYTHING he says during lecture and hope that you have everything for the test. Tests are 20 questions, 20 minutes, and very specific. There is no room for error and he doesn't have mercy with grades.
Peeks is the most passionate professor that I've had. He truly loves this class and lives out what he teaches. At least in an online setting, he really makes you work for your grade. I had to write down everything he said for his open-note tests because he would ask oddly specific questions about random stats. But take the class! He's a great guy!
Peeks clearly loves what he does as I never wanted to miss a class. Lots of feedback on assignments and the assignments were actually interesting so Im glad he assigned them. Exams were open note and not too bad as long as you study your notes. Really fast at getting back to you if you email him. I left the class a better person and student.
It is very clear from day one that Professor Peaks Mease is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Unfortunately, this does not lend well to all students. He does pop quizzes randomly for attendance which I can't complain about, but his tests are nearly impossible because everything is so vague off of his lectures. Good luck
Peeks is a great professor! The class is comprised of entirely lectures, so keep that in mind. He is extremely passionate about what he does, which makes class very interesting. Make sure that you take notes on everything because the test is made up of questions from readings and lectures. I would 100% recommend him.
Peeks is a good guy and his lectures are very interesting! The only thing that has truly hurt my grade is that we get 2 question reading quizzes and they are VERY specific. You always need to do reading and take really really good notes to do well in his class.
I loved his lectures and I always wanted to come to class. He does have pop quizzes that are usually based off a reading he assigns or other material he's covered in class. There aren't a ton of assignments but his tests are extremely specific. Overall, make sure you take good notes and write down everything he says and you should be good.
Aaron is really passionate about what he does. With this, he is very specific on his tests. You must right down all statistics and words that he says. He also gives pop quizzes after all hw readings. I never got above a 50 on those. If you are passionate about sociology, I would maybe take him. If it is for a GenEd, do not take him!!
Peeks is a great choice for SOCI 110! He is clearly very passionate about this class, but it can be kind of difficult. We had pop quizzes almost every week, but they usually weren't too hard (he just wants to make sure you're paying attention). Also, there are only a couple exams and big projects during the semester.
Dr. Peeks is a great person, this class really makes you a better person afterwards. The material is hard, but if you show up and study you will do fine. He likes to use stats in his tests, so make sure to write everything he says. I only have a moderate grade because I am a bad test taker, other than that I understand every assignment.
Beware of pop-quizzes and difficult tests. You have to pay attention to nearly everything in the lecture especially the stats. He is a sweet person and passionate but I would not recommend missing a class. Barely any homework but the projects are worth a ton.
Solid professor, the lectures are always fairly interesting and easy to follow, however beware of the 2 question pop quizzes. I would take the class but only if you're going to show up to class.
Peeks is the BEST professor I have ever had. He is so passionate about what he does, so much so it makes you passionate as well. The class covers such important topics and is so rewarding. I honestly feel like I am a much better (and more educated) person after taking this class. Take good notes, pay attenti and show up to class and you'll be fine!
Three tests, a few projects, and LOTS of pop quizzes are the only things you are graded on. Taking notes is challenging because if you don't write down everything, you won't know the answers for the exams. His lectures are interesting and you can tell the guy is so passionate about sociology. However, I don't think my grade reflects my efforts.
I loved this prof sm. Amazing lectures, so do not skip because pop quizzes on lectures and on work. Youtube Project sucks so gets. good group and start EARLY! Tests are application so please go to office hours and truly understand. Really had to work hard for this class but i still loved it no matter what.
Peeks is SO PASSIONATE about this subject. Every class feels like an inspirational Ted Talk. However, you NEED to go to class - lots of pop quizzes, and the tests are taken from super specific stats from the notes. While they're all multiple choice, you they require a lot of memorization from the notes. He's willing to curve, though!
Peeks was an incredible professor, he is so passionate about his work and it radiates in the classroom. The lectures are so entertaining and he's very engaging, plus he's an all around cool person. You definitely need to listen closely and take notes but if you do you'll be fine. He is a great person and professor, LOVED this class.
Peeks is super interesting and so passionate in what he is teaching. His test are super hard, they are application as well as what was said _ which can be super difficult. Peeks being so passionate makes the class super interesting. You have a group YouTube project and every once in a while he will assign papers. You have to be willing to study!
He has really engaging lectures, but the tests arent very related to the material he was teaching. Even when studying I would sometimes fail his tests. You don't have much of a chance to make up for it if you fall behind or don't do well on one thing, which is unfair in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend him, but I wouldn't tell you to avoid him
Guys don't let these reviews fool you. I took this class for a general education requirement, now don't get me wrong he's a very passionate professor. He does not put assignments within the syllabus. Five exams, only a couple of in-class assignments. Please get another soci110 professor please do. Prepare to devote yourself heavily to this class.
Skip class? You won't pass. All the tests are graded based on what he says in the lecture and he really expects you to pay attention to his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory, but go.
You have to fully devote yourself to this class. Write down EVERYTHING he says for tests. If you are not going to show up to class and put in the work, you WILL fail. His lecture were amazing and I was in shock after every class. He would end class and my mouth would be wide open because I would be in shock at how amazing the lecture was.
There really is no structure for this class or notes, he just talks and puts stuff on the exams that he talked about for 1 minute 5 classes ago. I have missed probably 3 classes and always take notes and I am failing so hard because the exams are extremely hard. The lectures can be interesting, but there really isn't more grades than the exams.
I took him last year and he was honestly my favorite teacher ive met at jmu. His lectures are always incredibly interesting and had a good flow to it. His tests are hard so make sure to study a lot before, but there was almost no homework, papers, or textbook use. Show up to the lecture and get a chance to talk to him one on one if you can.
You can tell he's so passionate about what he teaches and manages to keep my attention for the entirety of each class. The only thing I would say is that his tests are extremely hard. You have to go to every class to do good on the tests, he doesn't post the slides at all so make sure you get it the first time.
Peeks is very passionate about this subject, however this class was very hard. His exams were unfair and sometimes impossible. Instead of having questions about the concepts it's about random stats he talked about briefly in class, no joke a question was "what country produces the most blueberries". He doesn't post his slides and wasn't helpful.
Most passionate professor I've ever met.Very few grades outside of exams but they're very easy if you just try. His exams are hard, he'll throw random statistics in that were maybe mentioned once but gets you thinking and always curves the exam scores. His "textbook" was an online service that costs $1 per chapter and you only need a few chapters.
Really caring professor who loves what he teaches. There was a textbook but we only had to pay $7 in total for the chapters we needed. Grades are homework, 4 exams + 1 final, and a group project that is easy but takes a little while depending on who you're working with. Go to class because what he says in class is what you need to know for exams.
