Dr. Porter cares deeply about his field and his students. He invited each of us interested in graduate school, even those with unrelated majors, to make an appointment to have lunch with him and get his advice about choosing and applying to schools. If you are motivated to learn and /or looking for a mentor, I highly recommend his classes.

This is the worst class I've ever taken. Multiple week-long 12pg papers on countless books, lectures, hour-long videos. I took his online course AS A GEN ED. Not a socy major, but he treats us like socy grad students. He gives good feedback when asked, but that doesn't make it easier. He'll kick you out if you fall behind. DO NOT take this course!!

Every single class is just him rambling about the several books that you need to read for the course there's like 4-5 of them, literally did not learn a single thing. He makes you write weekly 5pg papers on the books and 2 15pg papers that are absolutely horrible. Plus a 40-50 question multi choice exam online on top of all of that. Stay away!!

I spent more time doing work for this class (not a soc major) than any other class I've ever taken. He's a nice guy, gives good advice, and you'll pass just fine if you do the work, but if you're looking for a gen ed look somewhere else. It was just not worth it. He's also unorganized and poor grammar. Nearly died to get the A. Not worth it.

I had Dr. Porter totally asynchronously but his class allows you to learn a vast amount of information but you have to be prepared to read. Dr. Porter is always happy to schedule a meeting with you if you have questions about the course as well. Sometimes the essay assignments can be confusing. Lastly, Dr. Porter provides quality feedback.

The purpose for this class is good, and I enjoyed the class itself, but Dr. Porter is another story. Dr. Porter sets up the work and everything else in one big, messy pile on D2L that is only separated by the weekly schedule. It is very difficult to navigate through what you are supposed to do. The information is good and there is a lot of work.

This is by far the most workload class I've ever had. You read 3 books and have to do discussions every week, with reading a ton of chapters each week and watching videos and other stuff. There are 3 grades, 2 essay exams worth 40% each and 20% for groupwork/participation. He takes forever to respond to emails and to grade work. Don't recommend.
