He's great! Really rapid-fire, keeps you awake. He made the class really enjoyable! He's been one of my favorite professors!

a class i actually want to go to every morning. keeps things interesting with his unusual perspective, and quirky activities. i learned a lot. i'm glad i took the course.

Hard class, a lot of reading, but useful. Funny Prof, who did an excellent job teaching really complex writings and ideas.

hard grader. he tries to challenge your ideas so that you can think about issues. he can get annoying when he does this. Topics on essays are not that interesting. The readings are easy.

Class was very enjoyable. He taught us (me) how to avoid things in writing. Very hard grader; I got nothing but check-minuses and minuses on my papers because of content, not mechanics. He made me enjoy writing and editing papers.

He is an awesome prof. He helps out a lot and he does scare people in the begining because he is a hard grader. He is worth taking, and you learn so much. He challenges you and makes you rethink what you really think.

Professor potter is not hard like the other ratings said, if you do the work you will pass the class easy you just have to do the assinments!

This prof is hard because he makes you challenge your assumptions. I would definitely take him again.

Potter is not close minded but will force you to defend your position. Assignments teach debate skills. Humor a plus.

Professor P is awesome! He gets the class really goin. He's a little picky on the papers, but it doesn't hurt your grade if you really try. He does not let you get away with sayin stuff without proof or backing it up.

He does not let make arguments without backing them up. Most ppl complaining about this prof. are just whining because they couldn't slide in this class.

Discussed a lot and always debated something. He made it like a class for arguing and discussing things instead of really helping us understand college writing. He was funny though.

Happened to be one of the student that he debated all the time. Just make sure you read his readings and show up to class. Obtaining a B is not hard in that class. He also prepares you very vell for the FINAL that is taken with the rest of the other English04/05 students. He will get in your face.

I hate morning classes but he made it pretty easy to go. very fun and interesting.

I really did'nt want to take this class but I actually learned alot. I wish I did'nt have to take all of the other english classes tho.

Was doing really well... got an A and a B+ on first essays... then i got C- on last essay... over got C in class, was a real curve ball... he is interesting, but a really hard grader, and really reluctant to discuss your grade with you...

Professor Potter is not as bad as he seems. For our final he told us to write an in class essay about what class we think we deserved in the class. I argued a B and ended up getting it even though my essay grades were C's. He also brings donuts during peer editing time. If you put in the effort he'll give you a fair grade.

he is the best english teacher I ever had. Although he is a difficult grade, you will learn far more in his class than expected.

This was my third timeat engl4 and I really needed to pass. I did not think I could but prof potter really helped me and I got through the class. Other profs were no help. He asks a lot but it is worth it if you want to learn. I hope he is teaching 1A in fall.

the best prof i could have hoped for for my first quarter of college. his lectures and assignments are interesting and in the end you actually feel like you learned something (unlike 95% of other college courses). slackers stay away. one of the best profs i've ever had.

Great teacher! You actually learn something valueble in his class. Hes very straight to the point in lecture. Class ends early most of the time :) . Grades kindof hard. You must try hard for the A.

he is so awesome! grades kind of tough, but my class only had about four essays, daily reading, and a final. he has really interesting classes that are interesting and that youre not just going to forget about the second you leave class. the essay topics were very unique and fun. great teacher.

Great teacher, had him my first quarter at UCR, he does grade kinda hard but it makes you work harder and you feel better when you get a good grade on a paper.. really funny guy too, and he brought us donuts on the last day :-)

I had him Winter and Spring qtr. for English 1B and 1C. I really enjoyed this class because he is an interesting and funny professor. He lets you out early about 85% of the time. If your good at English you'll do fine. He usually has 4 essays and required readings almost everyday and students get to make the final which is taken at home.

Odd man, but a good teacher because he makes you think about the world in a different way. Worth working your ass off for.

Professor Potter was an excellent teacher to me and I am glad to have had him this quarter. He is a breath of fresh air compared to all the usual teachers I have had before. He makes us think without us even knowing it and teaches us a lesson in the process. It doesn;t hurt that he is good looking either.

Proffesor was a hard grader but he lets you rewrite any essay. The class was very interesting. We talked about topics that most people refuse to argue about like religion, class etc. You will learn how to make strong arguments that can convince anyone.

A really great professor. His teaching skills are excellent and most of all, he makes you think, which is good =) If you think you're going to be bored in his class, the you're wrong.

Very generous, understanding, and humorous personality thats not the usual that you would expect. Talks a little too fast, but you get used to it as you go on through the quarter. His grading is a little strict. Is willing to help students all the time. He allows revisions on your papers as many times you want so a lot of room for improvement.

He let us rewrite our essays so that was helpful. But he talks as if he knows everything... Somewhat annoying.

his essays seem easy to write but beware! he is a hard grader. i got a C but hey not bad for writing my essays the night before or the day of ... he allows revisions. he is a very helpful teacher nonetheless.. he doesnt require attendance for his lecture so you dont have to show up

By far one of most favorite teachers. His classes are chill because he puts people on the spot. You will never win an argument against this guy! Unlimited rewrites but is a hard grader(his grading policy is not the conventional ie: 75%=B) Come to class on Revision days, he brings food for his students! >:D

He is one of my favorites and I loved his class because he makes you really think about your topic. I do not think he grades that hard I just didnt put much effort.

I enjoyed this class. He is very smart and witty. I learned a lot in this class and although he was a harsh grader I did learn to write bit better. I would recommend this class to anyone that wants to learn and challenge the way they write.

Professer Potter is an AMAZING professer. He can be intimidating at first but you learn to love his teaching. Harsh grader but lets you revise ALL your essays as many times as you want. So you can still get a good grade. He is very helpful with essays and makes your writing skills better.Take this class with this professer you wont regret it!

HARDEST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN!!! You learn so much in this class and like the other reviews say he is a tough grader. Yes he does let you rewrite your essays BUT sometimes rewriting them doesn't help your grade at all! I rewrote one essay because that is all that was given back in time for a rewrite and my points only increased by 6 points -_-

his class is kind of easy, only if you're interested in writing. He is DEFINITELY a hard grader but it helps you in the end because it makes you a better writer. His lectures are very interesting and engaging. He makes coming to class fun. However we didn't use the textbook very much, you could probably get away with borrowing someone's for reading

Professor Potter is very helpful. I did not pass English 4 the first time, and I had Dr. Potter for the second time. Potter makes class interesting and has a high pass rate for English 4. Recommend taking Potter if you are struggling with English 4.

Good grader, funny as hell, and dead useful. If you were in a squeeze and needed to reach him outside of email, he'll give you his number so you can communicate and be in touch with him regardless. If you need to finish your English 1 series, make sure Professor Potter's teaching it.

He is crazy funny. Hands down funniest teacher I've had in a long time, but his grading is also insane. Its really hard to try and get a good grade without doing revisions, but sometimes those don't even help.

I took his class for English 4 last year after not passing it the first time. He has the highest passing rate for students in English 4. His lectures were entertaining. He is a hard grader. He is willing to help. He will tell you how college essays are graded. I learned what the reader is expecting from me and helped my after I passed his class.

Pretty tough grader for Eng 4. He values grammar a lot. I took him once and failed his class, but i retook his class again in the another quarter and passed. He has helped me improved throughout the two quarters. Go to his office hours and ask for help on whatever you need. He will help you.

One of the best professors I have had. His class improved my writing greatly. It should be obvious he is a tough grader. He checks for logical fallacies and makes sure that you address all counter-arguments sufficiently. He cares deeply for his students but can be too harsh when criticizing personal views. Also, there is your chili pepper Potter!!

Let's you revise essays asany times as you want. Sometimes you can't tell if he's mad or trying to make a point.

Overall he is a cool professor, but he grades too hard. His grading is ridiculous. Do not come into this class thinking youll get an A. You can revise essays but half the time it doesnt help. Stay clear

I had him for engl004 last quarter and he was one of the best professors ive had so far. He's really nice and caring for students, and is not strict, so its easier to be at ease in the class and happily engage without the worry of him attacking you. He is also very helpful when it comes to grading essays, and he lets you revise an essay worth a lot

He is my favorite English professor so far. I mean he may act like a teacher wants to make your life miserable, but he wants to help you with pretty everything that you encountered in his class. College level essay is going to make you felt like you do not know how to write but it would definitely help you go further in the future.

Honestly, when I first saw the reviews I was nervous for his class and tried to switch out but then I just worked through it. His prompts are very simple and straight forward. As long as you stick to exactly what he's looking for, you'll get a good grade. Allows revisions. Def go to office hours and ask him what he's looking for in an essay.

He's funny and gives good lectures. He let us leave early a lot. Just know that all of the good reviews are for the teacher he is, not the way he grades. Super hard grader. The average on the first essay was a C-. Average on the second was a C and the third a C/C+. If you take him, put it as pass or fail so it doesn't hurt ur gpa.

An extremely tough grader but allows you the entire quarter to revise papers to get a better grade though you may struggle to find time.

Currently taking 1A with Prof. Potter for Fall 2023 and he is a good professor. Makes lectures barable and as someone who dislikes English, I still dislike it even after taking this class (mainly because I hate writing essays). You write 4 essays + 1 final. Unlimited revisions (there's a slight process to go through though). Follow the prompt!

Super straightforward. More on the simpler writing side of English 4. It's strict but helpful. Recommended if you want to take English seriously. Make sure to read his website for grading guides.

As a student who sucks at English, i can confidently say that getting at least a B in this class is very doable. Very engaging lectures and he teaches well. Although he is a very strict grader, he helped me become a better writer for sure. Extra credit was easy and you have unlimited revisions.

he's a bit insane and also said he writes bad reviews for himself on here so take that as you will. everyone's right when they say the grading is rough. lectures can be fun, though he seems a bit detached from students & comes off as little dismissive which personally made me scared of asking questions at times

bought bagels for all of us once, only had 2 hours of sleep, made me cry tears of joy. Anyways, Professor Potter is definitely one of the funniest professors that I have had this quarter. He does grade harshly but has a very generous revision policy, so don't fret if u bomb the first ACTUAL essay. Advice: do the readings and proofread ur essay!

Spent a lot of time during lectures just yapping. Gives 4 papers and grades harshly, but he has a lenient revision process. Tends to give pop quizzes almost every class, but its to make sure you did the readings. Pretty interesting, thought provoking professor. Don't take if you're not willing to do the revision work bc it will affect your GPA.
