All you need to do is take a few notes and pay attention. Read the books b.c there is a quiz on Mondays! It's a fun class as long as you pay attenetion.
He doesnt connect with all students. He only helps those that already know what he is talking about.
in response to the person that said he only helped people who knew what they were talking about, maybe if you read for class and prepared you too would know what you were talking about... he is a very interesting teacher, you will never be bored in class, but you must read and take notes because his papers, quizes and tests are very detailed
what's up with the personal defense of mr. shaheen by the previous poster? let his teaching speak for itself. i have trouble following all the references in class. i do the reading too! he's a nice man so maybe it's just a wierd class.
I love Mr. Shaheen, He's a great teacher and very helpful. He lets the students lead the discussion and it's a perk that he is serious eye candy.
first semester teacher, energetic
I don't know if he's changed at all, but he was very clear when I took him. When we'd talk about a book, he opens the floor to any questions we have. his quizzes are super easy, as long as you read, you have an A. papers are kinda hard, but when i would be lost, he'd give me lots of ideas and tell me exactly what he wanted. I'd take him again
This man is an awesome professor. Read, ask questions, participate in class discussion, and pay attention and you will do just fine. His papers are difficult, but tests and quizzes not bad. He'll help with any question that you have. He has a very warm and approachable personality...I would recommend him to any student!
I love this man. He was a fantastic professor. He let us lead discussion and give him input for the class. He is really funny and helpful. Not to mention he's pretty durn hot.
Dr, Shaheen is one of those rare individuals that seems to understand the importance of viewing the world with an open-mind. A lot of the content that he teaches requires a higher level of tolerance, understanding and intellect so the average, close-minded idiot beware. He will challenge you and your views in ways that you never dreamt possible.
Aaron Shaheen is one of those professors that you just want to go to class with. He's fun, frank, and interesting. He expects the students to do their reading. It's not an option. Always have your material in class. If you do so, I think any student will find his help and encouragement rewarding. He always manages to make any reading humorous!
He has NO mercy for anyone who does not bring their book to class. Grades critically. He knows his topic and he flaunts it! Over all really liked his class though. It was very interesting and entertaining.
Shaheen is an incredible teacher. Facilitates lively discussions. He's hilarious if you get him going. Books aren't all great but you get through them. He grades essays kind of tough but is overall fair-you just cannot BS him. Great class overall
He is GREAT! He is very helpful and nice. The class was not too hard, as long as you did the majority of the reading.
This man is very friendly and out going. Class is kind of hard just because you have to fit alot of reading in. He makes class fun and interesting. He gets really upset and annoyed at people who dont know bring their book to class. He's also VERY nice to look at.
This class has been my favorite so far @ UTC. It was a lot of reading, but Aaron made class so entertaining. His writing assignments were tough, but if you e-mail them to him before hand he will edit them for you. He was pretty funny and SEXY. I think I'm in love.
What a great teacher. I've taken several of his classes, and he has an amazing way of engaging the class, even when the material isn't particularly enthralling. He's just really excited about what he does, and its pretty darn contagious. Just don't expect to sit back and be lectured to - his classes are always heavily discussion-oriented.
Even though I didn't do as well as I had hoped, Shaheen did an excellent job. I agree with many that he is very engaging and has the ability to command a classroom, but I still think he is just a little bit too full of himself. He loves to hear the sound of his own voice reading timeless American classics and unfortunately so did I. Take him.
Dr. Shaheen is a brilliant professor. He is open to not only teaching, but learning from his students. If you are looking for an easy A, you will not find it with him. You must work for a good grade in his class; he will help you if you need it! PS:I never said he was a hottie; however, he is pleasant to admire after a long day of lectures.
Dr. Shaheen is a very engaging professor; he's exteremly knowledgeable on what he teaches, and takes his job very seriously. You must, MUST read the material in his class, and he does not simply lecture, but leads class discussions. Not an easy A, but if you read the material and make an effort to understand it, you'll do fine.
Dr. Shaheen is the bomb! He is very interesting, full of energy, and not bad to look at. He is very approachable. He will help you with anything you ask him to help with, in terms of the curriculum. I enjoyed his class and would take it again. He is a hard grader. Papers are critiqued heavily. If you write your papers early, he will help you.
Awesome teacher! Its alot of reading for this class, but most of it is interesting. The class is mainly discussion, so talking in class helps you greatly. He is always open to hear other perspectives on the text. Very interesting class!
Dr. Shaheen is the best. Western Humanities I was my favorite class all year. Granted, you do have a lot of reading but in a lot of cases spark notes will do, just be warned that essays are difficult and highly involved so actually reading the books helps when you have to use textural references. Thoroughly entertaining and charismatic.TAKE HIM!
Shaheen is a great teacher. He loves his job and loves to hear what you thought about the readings. Warning: if you do not like reading and if you are not a good essay writer this is not the class for you. He will help you though. And he only gives 1 exam and 3 papers. He has a corny sense of humor and highly intelligent.
My class was graded entirely on tests and quizzes, because he'd had plagerists the previous year. The quizzes are very specific to avoid cliff notes answers. The tests were simple if you had attended class and remembered the discussion well.
He is an amazing professor with a very accessible teaching style.
An Amazing teacher, inspired me to want to be a professor, do the reading for the daily quizes and youll do fine. Take good notes on the major themes disscused and all will be well.
Dr Shaheen is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He always makes class interesting while making sure that the students understand the readings. He's extremely helpful, and even schedules study sessions outside of class before tests. Exams are mostly writing. Its a lot of work but if you're willing to keep up on thre readings its a great class!
awesome professor!
He's alright he's really obnoxiousabout txting in class. This class is pretty easy but he tries to make it seem hard. I really like him but I kinda hate him.usually relatively nice. Todd hibbard is way better for Phil 113 he doesn't teach 115 though :(.but he's aight overall
So far the best teacher I have had a UTC!
A pretty good teacher of the subject, but I didn't like how the discussion was limited to the same two or three themes in each novel. Also, he only has three opportunities for grades--Test 1, Test 2, and the Final--All of which are essay tests, which I found really difficult.
I loved Aaron's class. he makes the lectures really interesting, but he does assign heavy reading assignments. The class is also discussion based, and there are reading quizzes every class. overall though, i'd say definitely take the class if you're willing to keep up with it. Not an easy A, but definitely worth it!
I had Aaron for American Lit. He really knows his stuff, and he's really enthusiastic about the material. We read quite a few novels and we had a quiz for just about every class. He's more concerned about students enjoying and understanding the readings overall. Fair grader and good feedback on essays. Do the work and you'll do fine.
Awesome class! He does a great job explaining things. Reading assignments are not too heavy to keep up with. Easy (if you read) quizzes almost every class. He appreciates and rewards participation, which makes the class fly by if enough students participate. He's a stickler on papers (2), but will read drafts. In-class midterm, no final.
Shaheen is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is so funny and extremely helpful. I love his class. He is also really cute!!! I have made high B's on all of his tests. He LOVES details in the essays. If you get offended easily or if you are immature, this is not the class for you.
This is the third class I have taken with Aaron & they have all been a challenge. He's an extremely effective professor & you always learn a lot but his workload and exams are slightly unreasonable. Be prepared to work, work, work! Loves class participation, and gives daily reading quizzes. CAUTION: if you don't keep up with reading, you will fail
Incredible teacher. TAKE HIM! He's not only very organized, but does a good job at balancing discussions and lectures. Gives reading quizzes every day. Must attend class (can only have 4 absences). Awesome! Hilarious. Want's to be called "Aaron" to be on a first name basis with students. Best professor!
wonderful professor!! you can tell he really loves his job. he is very enthusiastic and class is always interesting. read, read, read and make sure you take good notes in class. what is discussed in class will definitely be something you have to know for the tests
I took him for survey of american lit, I would not recommend him unless you are VERY familiar with english literature. Most of what he says when teaching is very convoluted and hard to understand where he's coming from, not very clear on topics discussed in class. You really have to work, especially on papers. Reading load is moderate
Great professor. I took him for American Lit, and it was very difficult for a 200 level class, but I learned a lot and would take another class from him if I ever had the chance. He reads drafts for essays ahead of time, he gives great detailed notes in class, and his tests always come directly from the readings and from class discussions.
Can't recommend this guy highly enough! Here's a guy who is truly passionate about his course material, yet also very interested in hearing your opinions about it. Great discussion-based literature classes.
HE IS VERY HELPFUL THERE IS SOME HEAVY READING BUT HE HELPS YOU EVERYDAY TO UNDERSTAND IT.
Shaheen isn't my favorite professor. He is very hard to understand unless you know EXACTLY what he's talking about. Although I took him for a 200 level course, he taught it like it was a 400 or 500 level course. I expected an A in this course and received a C, even though I went to class everyday and read the assignments.
He is BY FAR my favorite professor! You don't realize his full awesome-ness until you're out of his class. I would love for him to teach all my classes!
I went to class everyday and did okay on the tests and listened everyday. He WANTS you to talk a lot. If you are not a talker, don't have him for class. He takes off 20 points off your grade at the end of the semester if you don't talk. That is why I got a D as my final grade. He punishes you that way if you are a shy person. I was not a fan.
I took Aaron for Western Humanities 1. He is so cute it makes you interested in the subject! He really knows his stuff! There is a lot of reading involved in the course, keep up with the readings in order to do well on the daily reading quizzes. Great teacher! It helps that he is handsome! :]
He is a very good professor and made the class really interesting! You most definitely have to read your books in order to do well in the class. Make sure you talk in class because if you don't your participation grade won't be as high, and you get a lot of points for participation. Overall, I really enjoyed this class. Take him !!!
Awesome!! Pretty much all I had to do was read the books, and he explained everything really well. Great professor!
REALLY HARD TESTS
I think a lot of these reviews are way too hard on Shaheen. He's a great professor who really wants you to succeed! You won't get an easy A, but if you read the material and attend class you are bound to do well. He ALWAYS accepts rough drafts of papers! Follow his suggestions and you'll do fine! Take him!
Dr. Shaheen is an interesting professor. You will be quizzed so keeping up with the reading is a must! He is a very particular grader and I think he expects his students to be perfect. However, if you have a good understanding of the readings prior to class, take good notes during class, and attend regularly you should do well.
If you take this class from him, be prepared for a serious challenge. He is a very particular grader. To make sure you'll make good grades, submit rough drafts for him to look over before getting a final grade. Do not procrastinate! If you are confused about ANYTHING, talk to him ASAP. Take good notes and pay attention, you should do fine.
Particular grader. Loves class participation. Expects quality work and regular attendance. If confused, talk to him ASAP. If you take decent notes and review them regularly (after each class) you will do well!
He was really friendly and helpful, but you absolutely have to do all the reading or you'll fail his quizzes. Requires participation, and it makes a big difference in the grade. All in all, great teacher, just a hard grader. Be prepared to write a lot!
Professor Shaheen is a wonderful professor and I highly recommend him! He is extremely smart! He is also very helpful and allows rough drafts for papers so that you can get some insight into whether or not you are on the right track with an idea. I had him for American Lit, and am taking another one of his classes this semester!
This class was tough, but he also wants his students to succeed. He'll read any rough drafts, if you ask he'll meet with you to go over grammar and your paper(which helped me a lot). Be prepared to read, there's a quiz almost every class period. He loves class participation and does not make you feel stupid if your interpretation differs from his.
Dr. Shaheen is super energetic and engaging in class. Being an Intro to Lit course, he covered how to explicate, analyze, and understand literature. He actually helped me understand how to analyze and write, rather than just throwing us into the cold. He can be strict, but is always willing to work with you. I am taking him again next semester.
By far one of my favorite professors! His class was the first English course I took at UTC, and I was quite intimidated being a freshman beginning the year with a 2000 level course. He made the class very interesting, and is more than willing to help you with drafts of papers and further discussion of novels during office hours or by appointment.
Words cannot describe how amazing this teacher is. I took four of his classes because I loved his teaching style and his enthusiasm so much. He truly loves what he does and wants every student to succeed. By far my favorite teacher in the world. He does give quizzes so keep up with the reading. He is an absolutely wonderful teacher.
Dr. Shaheen is a great teacher! He is very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. He is very tough on grading papers, but he makes you a better writer.
TOUGH GRADER! I actually enjoyed the content of the class. It was very interesting, and easy to pay attention. However, Dr. Shaheen takes the class WAY too seriously. I almost didn't have a 4.0 because of him. It's very hard to make an A even if you know the material because he crams so much into the tests. Go to his office hours and participate!!
Dr. Shaheen is a sweet guy and great teacher, loves discussion with his students. Really helpful if your willing, I would suggest turning in every rough draft you can because he gives very good feedback on each. Quizzes are expected after each reading. Tests are pretty challenging and he is a tough grader on quizzes, especially grammar.
Professor Shaheen is honestly one of the best professors I have had. His tests are hard, but he tells you exactly what will be on them. Participation is huge to him. If you involve yourself in class, he will like you much more. He bumped my grade to an A due to participation so participate!!! Amazing lectures, would definitely take him again.
Great teacher, would totally take again
He's the toughest grader I've ever seen in my life. He goes above and beyond trying to make assignments more difficult than they should be. He's not the best at offering helpful feedback. He's great at telling people that their writing sucks, but not so great at offering suggestions on how to make it better. Choose a different teacher.
Shaheen is a teacher that is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and seems to enjoy it. He's laidback and if you're willing to show up to class and do the work, his class is pretty enjoyable.
I genuinely learned so much in this class! I'm not a fan of this style of writing, but Professor Shaheen really goes in to depth. You have to read, but as long as you read the book and come to lecture, you will definitely be prepared for the test. Be ready to have open dialogue in class because he is very interactive. I am retaking him for spring!
Professor Shaheen is one of the best professors I have had at UTC. He makes what could honestly be a boring class into an exciting lecture each day. He's funny and an awesome guy to talk to. Be ready to read a lot and be prepared for quizzes each day. They aren't hard if you do your job though. Definitely recommend!
You have to read a lot for this class. He also does not care to call you out if he thinks you are not paying attention in his class. My biggest problem with his class is that he doesn't put his grades online so you can never really be sure on what grade you have in the class. I would cut my arm off before taking this class again.
The only grades he takes is from three exams and occasionally daily quizzes on our readings. So if you aren't a good test taker I would be careful to take this class. Professor Shaheen does know what he is talking about and is a good teacher, but you have to work for your grade.
Nice professor! He was super funny and I would take it him again, but if you dont read you wont pass. He has quizzes everyday and the exams are super specific and hard so make sure to study!
Professor Shaheen is a really cool dude! It's obvious he knows what he is talking about and wants students to understand the concepts in his class. A lot of reading to do for homework, but his lectures are super engaging/interesting! Not the easiest texts/ideas but he makes the material super clear for the exams
I've had Dr. S twice now, and he is phenomenal. His grading is tough, but it holds you accountable. You will be expected to read what's on the syllabus, and you will not pass his class if you don't. He's one of the best professors in the English department, and you'll learn a lot from him (if you listen).
Dr. Shaheen is very passionate about what he teaches. His class is text heavy, participation matters, and he gives out quizzes at the beginning of class over the reading. Very anti-technology in the classroom. Also, order the books in advance, hell nag at you if you do not have the materials!
By far one of the most demanding courses I have taken. Dr. Shaheen is a sweet guy & he makes class enjoyable, but the amount of reading in this course is borderline torture. I believe this course is too demanding for a Gen Ed, but would be suitable for any English major. There are only 3 tests, daily quizzes, & participation that make up your grade
This class is very demanding and reading oriented. We are reading about 6 books in the course and 5+ smaller works. It really is a pain to be reading that much for a gen ed (1130). He is very funny and tries to make class enjoyable but is strict on us having any electronics out or talking while he is talking.
He is the most disrespectful professor I've ever had. He will call you out and make snide comments if you don't have your course materials visible in class in front of everyone. When I was unable to participate (dealing with a tragic death in the family), he was extremely disrespectful. DO NOT take his class, you WILL regret it. Please trust me.
Professor Shaheen was great. I took this class for a Gen Ed requirement and was honestly really nervous about taking it but Professor Shaheen was a great professor and make the content easy to understand and fun to learn. I was so suprised to actually enjoy an english class. As long you give effort, you should be able to make an A.
For a GenEd course this is far too demanding. This class required six textbooks and he does not allow electronics, so everything else must be printed. There is reading every night and tests cover 80% of your final grade. Test are all free answer and written, I did not finished a single one. He will say something if he catches you on your phone.
Absolutely amazing! Opened my eyes to literature that I'd never explore on my own. Highly reccommended!
He cares about Am Lit, but he is extremely difficult to learn from. I love English and am good at it, but I find myself with a B in the class due to 2 papers and only pop quizzes. He tells you what he expects after you've turned in the paper. He is also disrespectful and doesn't respect your time either. He is a nice person, but not a good teacher.
good but tough
He was a nice guy but such a difficult professor. For a 2000 level, we had to read SO much. I'm an English major, and I felt like it was too much. The books are not interesting, and there are pop quizzes basically every class so you have to read otherwise you get a 0. Doesn't put grades in until end of semester & his discussions feel like a reach.
good guy! good class but
I love Dr. Shaheen. His class is fairly easy, but be prepared to read and discuss! His personality is fantastic and his lectures are engaging. I always leave feeling like I've gained something from him.
This is my second time having Dr. Shaheen, and I can say without a doubt that Dr. Shaheen is one of my favorite professors at UTC. He's caring, kind, funny, and engaging. I highly recommend taking his class!
One of my favorites I've had. Encourages digging beyond the surface, which results in excellent group discussions. There's a lot to read (and you should read to get ahead!) but it pays off. He doesn't allow technology in class, but I liked that. He also changed assignments mid-course a few times, but never to our detriment. Really good professor.
