Great teacher... learn a lot.
Not extremely hard, but kind of a boring lecture class. A lot of reading (for the non-english major that is).
Hes an **** when you speak to him outside of class, and hes sooo smart he will tear your papers up! dont take him if you are hoping for a push-over course
He is extremely helpful. It was boring because it is philosophy, but I got an A and it was because he was helpful to me outside of class.
if youre looking for an easy class this is not it. you have to read a lot, he graded essay exams rather picky, but hes a nice guy and was willing to work with you.
He was very very nice, but his class could be a little boring. He lectured the whole time, but if you had any questions he was more than willing to help. He helped you out with grades as much as possible if you put in the effort. Just keep up w/ reading.
His class is boring, but the grades are all from papers and essay tests. So, if you can write, you can get an A. I didn't read ANYTHING for this class-- he tell you everything you need to know during lecture.
okay, the class is drier than cheap wine. occassionally he will make a joke or two, so that shows that he tries. he's a very intelligent person but he can't articulate his thoughts in a plain, easy to understand.
He knows his material well. There is a TON of reading, but take really good notes and the reading is less important. Tests weren't hard; he gives you the questions before hand. Advice: Pay Attention In the class and you'll do fine.
Very boring lectures and long reading assignments, but he is always willing to help, even calling students and meeting them on days with no office hours. Well spoken too but it is often hard to understand with the subject matter. Ask for help on tests.
The class is kind of difficult, but if you pay attention in class and take good notes, you will do fine. He really knows what he is talking about and his lectures will tell you everything you need to know. I never thought of myself enjoying phil., but he has made me somewhat interested in it.
aaron, you are impossible to understand. i sit in your class and wonder what in god's name you are talking about, and that's after doing the reading. i would NEVER recommend taking this class unless you are at an advanced level of philosophical understanding or you're insane.
How in the hell I got a B in this class, no one will ever understand. DO not take this class. It is impossible to understand, and when you have questions he only gives you half the answer, so no matter what you do, you can never get it right on tests
Pray that if you get this teacher you will not have him early in the morning. He is really hard to understand and pretty full of himself. He is easy to approach and ask for help but he grades pretty harshly. GOOD LUCK. I know a bunch of people who dropped his class in two weeks
AWFUL! He does not get his coat off and is barely through the door before he's lecturing. All he does is LECTURE. He scribbles words all over the board that make no sense. You try to take notes but he goes so fast that you miss everything else he said. He is a VERY tough grader. Do not take him!
Lectures A LOT. Gives you test answers and essays in advance so you can study/ask questions. Take lots of notes and you can get a B easily. Good sense of humor too.
Okay by far the worst teacher, but hey it was his first year really wish i would have known that cuz his class was a struggle, his notes were horrible, his explanations were worse, and further more he wasn't very helpful outside of class. I mean he is a really nice guy and he is funny, however that doesn't help my grade....
all he does is add stress to ur life...dont take him
Either Intro. to or 2nd philosophy class I took. He was pretty good. Seemed a little weird, but he was a great professor.
Tough class. Very boring...he talks way over your head. It's a mini-living hell. Bring a cell phone or PDA with games.
horrible, i had to get a philosophy tutor just to do okay. hes a nice guy but soooo confusing available for office hours but meeting w/ him is pointless b/c you cant understand what he is saying he talks like hes reading straight out of a phil. book wouldnt recommend tough grader very stressful class
DO NOT TAKE THIS HIM! it's impossible to take notes in this class, he only writes one word on the board. when he refers to the word he points to it, it has limited relevancy to what he's talking about so the class is worthless. take ANYONE else. trust me on that one.
The worst professor I have ever had. He is impossible to understand because he talks like a philosphy book. He has no idea who his audience is and and is such an odd grader. I got an A on one essay, did the same work and got a D on the second. So boring too. Don't take!
Frankly, Szymkowiak is a guy who knows his stuff, but doesn't dumb it down for the average student who doesn't give a damn about philsophy anyway. If you make an effort, a B is relatively easy, though you have to work for an A, but most people don't bother. One of the better profs. in the philosophy dept., in my opinion.
Good teacher, but u have to be willing to pay attention all class. He lectures all class and gives good notes and outlines for the test. He practically gives you every answer for the essay tests, which is really helpful. Hes a nice guy but if u don't feel like paying attention in class, u might not want to take him. You don't need to read anything!
All this guy does is assign essays after essays. If you arnt a good BSer when you write essays dont take this guy. He talks like hes from the 17th century and he gives you terrible notes. Get out of this class if you get this guy.
A horrible professor, speaks in monotone and his notes on the board are random words. Thinks he is teaching graduate philosophy majors when its a required course. everything is essay's, including tests. looks like the creepy guy from redeye.
Great prof. People complaint that he speaks "above" them, but he's just a really smart guy. He has trouble dumbing the material down for people who've never read a book in their lives. He makes PHIL easy and outlines for all the books so studying is almost a non-effort. He will also explain his big words if you ask him to.
I love Professor Szymkowiak! He inspired me to be a philosophy major; however, if you aren't interested in the subject, I can see how you would have a hard time in his class. He grades fairly and is easy, especially if you have him check your answers prior to the test/when the paper is due.
The only thing that astonishes me more than Szymkowiak's brilliance is the failure of so many students to fathom it. It is not just his legibility; I remember being blown away by his punctuality. Lookit, if people can't grasp his critique of Kant's "Perpetual Peace" then maybe they should be taking Health Ed 46. I can't wait for the next class!
If you realize to write a practice essay for each possible exam question, which is what the exam is, questions you have to respond in essay form to, then you will get an A. I liked this class and it inspired me to take more philosophy classes. Good teacher.
Great teacher for philosphy. Some students in the class struggle, but if you pay attention and take good notes you will be fine. Also, he is very willing to help as long as you actually utilize his offers of office hours and draft review for papers.
i loved szymkowiak! he was a great professor and such a nice guy! he was so helpful and explained everything, not to mention he would give you the test questions ahead of time and would always be free for help!
Hard grader and a lot of reading but a really nice guy. He's also really helpful and he will read the drafts for your essays before you turn them in and get you on target.
I took his honors class and yes it wasn't easy but very interesting. He's very informative and extremely nice. People always complain that they hate his class but I honestly don't know why. He's awesome! Don't take his class if you don't feel like working hard. My first paper was a D. ha but my last was an A. I loved it. Really learned a lot! :)
His class is dull, but he is very helpful. He'll read over rough drafts of the two papers you have to write if you give them to him early, and he tells you almost exactly what he wants as answers for questions on the exam. Recommended if you want an easy A: just study your exam questions carefully beforehand. Doing a practice one wouldn't hurt.
ABSOLUTLY AWEFUL!!!! I just spent 6 weeks in philosophy hell. After this experience I will NEVER take another philosophy class again! Boring-He reeks of arrogance. He is a walking monotone philosophy book when he talks. I got NOTHING but a high dose prescription of Xanax out of this class.
He has a five point grading scale which makes it impossible to get an A. He even tells you this when start questing him about your grades. An intro class that is almost impossible to get A, hello!?! He offers to help in anyway and when you take him up on it he is short and offensive.
I got an A in this course by taking a lot of notes, reading the assignments & going to him for help with papers. I found him VERY helpful. He gives advance copies of essay&exam questions AND reviews them up front; how much more help can he give? More class participation could've broken up so much lecture:that's on the students as much as the prof.
WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! If you see his name on your schedule RUN, DON?T WALK, RUN TO THE NEAREST COMPUTER AND DROP HIM!! RUN AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!Cause it does or at least your sanity does.
i did not read any of the books and just took notes in class and got a B still. just go to him and ask questions.
Great teacher! 2 tests, 2 papers, a final, and participation make up your grade. He gives you advance copies of the possible test questions, and is always willing to help out. Also, he will read over your paper before you turn it in. I was so nervous for philosophy, but he made it interesting! You have to work and take good notes...great class!
I am an older student and this was a shocker. He tells you what he wants and meters the reading at sensible levels and if you show up, listen, and participate, you will be fine. He makes the course as sensible as you can get with Philosophy. I find it has changed the way I look at things afterward.
Before taking this class,I had absolutely no interest in Philosophy as I had never taken a class before. He changed my view on life though honestly with his very insightful lectures and class discussions.I got an A on all papers and assignments by simply going to him and asking for help.People who find him difficult just aren't willing to work hard.
Prof. Szymkowiak was a very knowledgeable professor. He laid out 5 basic grades for the class, 2 papers, 2 tests, and a final. He was always helpful by reading over drafts or answering questions. He was a hard grader, but it's hard to find a philosophy teacher who isn't. If you ask for help, ask him to look over drafts, etc. you will be fine.
Worst teacher I've had at Xavier thus far. I switched my major because of him and my new disliking for philosophy. I went to his office numerous times for help, and didn't take that into consideration at all when grading papers. Very hard grader and it would help if I could actually read his handwriting...
Very difficult class. Philosophy is definitely a hard subject to understand, especially if you can't "think outside the box" but it is a university core requirement. He is a very tough grader.. got an F on my first paper. If you go to his office hours, he will help explain concepts gone over in class. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
This class was incredibly hard and required a lot of work, but if you are willing to work for it (even get a tutor like I did) an A is possible, but not likely.
I took this class during the 2-week summer session. I was afraid of PHIL. This class was not as bad as feared. It was intense reading, all essay tests, and essay hmwk. I recommend writing down everything he says in class and use that along with reading to study and for essay assignments. I didn't get an A, but enjoyed it and learned a ton.
Kind of a picky grader. 2 papers,1 summary presentation, 1 midterm, 1 final, questions given before hand. Assigns a lot of readings. Grants 10 absences. Cool dude, talks forever, pretty boring.
I loved him. TAKE NOTES until your hand falls off, you will thank yourself when it comes to writing his papers and taking his tests. Very helpful in his review sessions and an overall great guy. If you put in the work, you will do great. Go to class, one missed topic could screw your grade up. Don't really need to read as long as you take notes.
You'll only have 4 grades the entire semester, all weighted equally. If you fail one, you're done. He makes you think he's relaxing and easygoing but he's actually a really hard grader. I hope you like to read.
Dr. S gives off an appearance that he is very easy going, but in reality he is a tough grader. In class his lectures will bore you to sleep, but if you see him outside of class he will explain clearer. He only has four grades all semester so do well each chance you have. Overall he isn't terrible just review with a friend who understands the work.
Prof S. is a great choice for Phil 100. He provides simple outlines and his lectures are very clear. He is quite helpful when providing feedback for papers and in preparing students for exams.
He's a really nice professor, but he grades papers very very hard and he initially doesn't seem like someone that would
He phrases his questions in a very odd way and goes onto tangents all the time. He is alright but he honestly wasn't my favorite philosophy teacher. He is a nice guy, however, I don't plan on taking him again.
Prof S is an awesome. He really makes philosophy 101 something to enjoy. He tries to make it as easy as possible to learn by giving outlines and study guides for his midterms and final. He gives a decent amount of reading throughout the semester but that's because its obviously a Philosophy class based on Philosopher's works. Highly recommend.
4 grades in class: 2 papers, midterm, and final. Not hard to do well, as he gives very clear instructions. Class is by far the most boring I have ever taken (really discovered my inner artist). Purely lecture based, however, I would willingly sit through a boring class if it means an A. Would take again
Dr. S isn't necessarily a bad professor. He's super smart, nice, and straight forward. I wish he used Canvas. He emails everything. His lectures are intellectual, but incredibly boring. 1-3 kids would be out cold by the end of each class. He has 4 assignments (2 tests, 2 papers) thats it. Go in and ask for help or you'll get a D like my first paper
Dr. S's class gets dull at some points and is only graded by four things: two papers, one tests, and the final. If you talk to him with your papers you will do fine on them and if you pay attention in the lectures you will be fine for the tests as long as you do a little bit of preparation. He does send out test questions early for studying.
Lectures werent necessarily exciting but I think thats just philosophy. He is way more straightforward than any other phil prof Ive had. Go into his office and he will tell you exactly what to do, the papers and finals are extremely straightforward from what was discussed in class.
Most boring class I've ever taken. Dr. S stands up and lectures for the whole hour and 15 minutes and it is very boring and hard to follow. Not many people had any idea what he was saying and the only grades through the semester were 2 papers and 2 exams where you had to memorize paragraphs worth of information.
Assigns lots of reading but his lectures cover what you need to know, so there's no pressure if you get behind. The only gripe I had with the class is the fact that there's only four grades: 2 essays and 2 essay exams. Theres not much work then all of the sudden you have a paper and a final at the same time. Overall, not a terrible class though.
He assigns readings for each class but talks through all of it, so you don't really need to read to know what's going on. For tests, he gives you the questions ahead of time and goes through exactly what you need to know. For the papers, you have plenty of time and get to pick what question to answer, and he'll give feedback if you send a draft.
Prof. S. is very wise and respected for his research and knowledge in philosophy, but as a professor I didn't enjoy him. Reading wasn't too heavy but he gives boring lectures every class and most of the time doesn't make any sense. Only graded on two essays and two essay exams, all graded tough and inconsistently.
Professor S is a really nice guy and he's very knowledgeable in what he teaches, but overall his classes are not for those who aren't philosophy majors. The reading isn't too bad, but he's very lecture-heavy and sometimes it can be easy to lose track of what he's talking about. There aren't many graded papers/exams, and he is a really tough grader.
I think hes a great professor. He gives great lectures. If you dont read the book, just show up for class and take notes on what he says. By time you leave class youll feel like youve read the whole book and have a great understanding. There isnt much homework other than reading and essays. Just be ready to write a lot
Took him for phil 100. Super boring class. You get 4 grades the whole class. My roomates and I always worked on essays together, but the grades always varied, and were never the same. Would not take again.
A nice person, but a boring teacher. Seemed to care more about the ability to regurgitate his thoughts then to come up with your own. Class really dragged along and he was just not engaging. Would not take again.
Dr. S was a great prof. and good person. People on here are dinging him for being boring, but it's a Phil. in Ethics class, what do you expect. During his lectures he goes over the readings, so if you pay attention you don't have to read. If you pay attention in class and study for the tests there is no reason why you shouldn't get at least a B/B+.
Your grade in the class is based off of 2 essays and 2 tests. Szymkowiak is a really dynamic lecturer and he made the material interesting. He is willing to go the extra mile and your proof papers, or zoom with you to answer questions. Tough grader, but if he knows you put in the effort, he will help you get a good grade! Highly recommend.
He is a great person, but as professor he gives hard and boring lectures. all the classes went very boring and nothing did not make any sense. you will have 2 papers and 2 exams. exams are just writing two essay in class and expects all the little things it in, if you miss something it is gonna have huge effect on grade a lot of reading assignments
Professor Szymkowiak is a great one, he really cares about your learning and if you are able to understand the material. Your grade is only 4 assignments: 2 papers, a midterm and final which are in a timed essay format. For the long term papers, you can send in drafts many times and he will provide really helpful advice to improve your paper.
Szymkowiak is an incredibly smart and caring professor who offers dynamic lectures over the nightly reading. Graded by a midterm, final, and two papers which you can send to him for feedback. If you take decent notes, there's no reason you can't get an A. One of the smartest professors I have come across at Xavier and also one of my favorite.
This class was awful. Professor Szymkowiak lectured for the entirety of the class, and his lectures were nearly impossible to understand. I even tried to record them to listen to him again, and it was no help. Your grade is based off of 4 essays, and if your philosophical understanding is any different than his you will get a bad grade.
He is very knowledgable, but is VERY lecture heavy. He did not do anything else the whole semester. He does make lectures entertaining, though, and is always available for help on any assignment. Gives great feedback on papers and will even go through all exam questions as a class before the exam.
Make sure to study for exams as there are only four grades the whole semester. He is very helpful with papers though, and he will look over yours as much as you ask him to.
Lets me honest, Philosophy is so boring. He does his best job to make it interesting. To be honest, I didnt pay attention in his class one time. He only has like 4 grades for the whole year. This class is an easy B if you do the bare minimum. I would take him again if I needed to take PHI 200 again.
Every class is a lecture and he picks like 3-4 people to participate and the rest of the class just like...sits there and listens. Saving grace is the class is desperately easy. If you don't have to take it, don't. I think if I had the choice of this or slamming my head into a brick wall for 75 minutes twice a week, I would take the brain trauma.
Professor S is very well versed in philosophy, but sometimes his lectures would move into topics that no one could understand. The concepts in the class are challenging, as well as the content from the books. In order to do well, you need to meet with him during his office hours to ask questions, especially in regard to papers and exams
Lectures every single class and talks the entire time about the same points over and over and over...... His grading is very difficult and if you don't agree with his point of view, it's not looking good for you.
This professor let another student laugh at me in class. The student didn't agree with me. Its a PHILOSOPHY class. The class itself was fine, but any professor that tolerates disrespect like that is not a good professor.
Where do I begin, Dr Szymkowiak is one of the best professors that this university has to offer. His lectures were very thourough but easy to understand. He explained complex topics in a fun and easy way. I would HIGHLY reccomend him for any philosophy class because he is simply the best, top of the line. Excellent guy, and professor.
Dr. Szymkowiak is a decent professor, but philosophy is a hard concept to understand. You need to go to every class to pass because you won't understand the readings without attending the class meetings. There are a couple papers which are also pretty difficult, but he will look over them and answer your questions and make suggestions on your paper
