I'm surprised there arent more reviews because he is awesome!! Made going to 8am class enjoyable, he's really personable and has some funny interesting stories..the course was kind of dry but he did a lot to make it good! Loved his class, one of my favourites for sure!..Take his classes! And he is a hottie!! mmhhmmmm ;)
Aaron is awesome! Very understanding and helpful. I would take another class with him, learned a lot and had a great time.
very good classes, he makes you feel very comfortable and he is very nice when it comes to correcting you or your work!
Great prof!! Makes an otherwise boring class interesting. Very understanding and helpful...and plus he's a hottie :) Reminds me of Hank from Californication!
A great prof. I wish I had more time to work harder in his class. But I'm in architecture, and it was just an elective.
By no means do am I a person to say negative things about a person. I consider myself a very rationale person who does not judge. However, I've had Aaron as my English Proffessor this year and I have to say that I am not only angry but ashamed. I call him a 'young punk' simply because he's a young proffessor who thinks he's cool but he's not.
When Aaron took over our class for a sick prof, we were all a little afraid because he provided a plethora of insight (which we didn't have that much of in the beginning of the semester) from the very beginning, but he was super helpful, and had very interesting things to say. He has high expectations, but he's a stellar prof.
Aaron is not only the most intelligent professor I've had thus far during my University career, but he also makes any of his classes extremely interesting. His insight on the selected readings is unique and leaves you with a completely different perspective to think about than what you arrived to the class with. He's extremely helpful AND beautiful
Aaron is one of the nicest and funniest professors at Ryerson. He knows how to analyse the material, is very helpful and a good marker. He makes participating in class very easy even for the shy students. His sense of humour is fantastic and he is a cutie.
Interesting and very helpful!
He is a super nice and helpful person! He extended office hours and you can email him any questions. He even went out of his way to help me one day! He gives you many chances to do well, so take them! He makes the course material very relevant with it being technology-based. He even has jokes. Great Prof!
This man is one of my favorite professors.
When I walked into SSH 205 I thought I would hate it. Luckily I had Aaron Tucker. He has a unique, dry, yet still infectious wit. Almost every issue he brings up in class relates to myself in the here and now. He expects a lot from you, but if you're willing to put a little extra in, you'll end up getting a whole lot more out of it.
One of the best professors at Ryerson, he is nice and awesome. I got an okay mark, not the best mark I ever got; but definitely worth it taking his course. I took Creative Writing, where I learned a lot and sharpened my skills. He is funny and the course is not boring! Awesome class, I actually looked forward to going to class for once! Fair marker
As much as I didn't have an interest in writing, I always looked forward to going to SSH Aaron is an awesome prof, he's always encouraging you e-mail him or go to office hours for any clarification. Not the easiest marker, but you'll learn a lot from him just by going to class and participating. Also, he's funny and not to mention easy on the eyes!
What a great prof! Seems like he actually cares about his students! Going to his class in the early morning was okay for me. I learned a lot about writing and he was extremely helpful throughout the semester.
He's a good teacher and seems like a nice guy but I think he's relatively new and feels like he has to mark hard.
an excellent professor
He's very enthusiastic and engaged about what he teaches, and he makes the dull Academic writing class more interesting. He's a good professor, but he is also a hard marker and he requires you to do a lot of work. Not for lazy people!!
I am in my fourth year at Ryerson and I am about to graduate, majoring in English. I would just like to say that Aaron Tucker is the absolute BEST professor at Ryerson, particularly if you are taking English. You will NOT regret taking one of his courses.
Amazing prof! One of the best ones I've had. He is helpful, fair marker, give useful feedback, available for extra help. Totally recommend him!
His first comment in class was "all of you are an average C writers." You should expect to actually get a 'C' in your transcript. The A mark is reserved only for his own writings.
I've probably never worked harder for a "decent" mark. He is very harsh in his marking, but he is also funny and engaging. Recommend if self improvement and a challenge mean more to you than grading. If you stress over marks, maybe steer clear. You'll see growth as a writer with him. PS you MUST attend class. Very stringent w/ participation mark.
he was the 1st prof I met in uni :) he was very helpful except this class was brutal.. he has high expectation..
Aaron is a great professor, he helped me discover a passion for literature that I never knew I had. Although his grading may seem harsh at first it is a motivation to push students abilities and in turn bring out hidden talents. He is very supportive and helpful and willing to help with any issues students may have.
An overall great TEACHER, a word I rarely use for instructors at universities. Has a keen interest in the material and is always willing to help in his office. As for marking, he is stuck with the same system as all the other. The average for the class gets a C to a C+. But it's not his system. I will gladly take another course with Mr. Tucker.
I heard Tucker was the best prof in the English depart. and he's not far off. He's funny, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. He's very critical of your writing, but I respected his opinions and found his critiques valuable. He's rather stuck in his ways - he knows what he likes and sometimes yours won't be it. Can't read his writing though!
The overall class experience was okay. Class is engaging but the grading is hard. Like most english classes, grading can be subjective to the teacher's interest. Low grade doesn't necessarily mean bad work. Take this class if you want to learn some writing techniques, especially poem, NOT if you expect high grade.
He was great! Has a sense of humour that's down to earth and relatable but still manages keeps the class moving forward. He helped me master the essay, one of the most important skills in University.
I always looked forward to going to his lectures, they were funny, engaging, and got you really interested in the material. However, I felt his marking was slightly unreasonable and his expectations were a bit unclear. His essay feedback isn't helpful since you can't understand his writing, you'd have to talk to him in person if you want help.
Definitely a great down to earth Professor. He keeps the lectures engaging making most students more likely to attend class (Attendance is a must in this class!). However, he is a pretty hard grader, very picky about the work you hand in, and has VERY illegible comments on work. Overall he teaches great University skills and I recommend him!!
Aaron Tucker was the best professor I had in my first semester at university! At first, I found his sense of humor to be a bit irritating, but his teaching style is what matters, and he teaches GREAT! He told the class that by the end of the class, our marks would improve, and so they did. Attendance is a must! His office hours are also great! :)
Aaron is a wonderful professor. I came into this class set in my own way of learning, and despite the fact that my style definitely clashed with Aaron's initially, I found this class to be highly engaging and one of the more rewarding courses I've taken in University. Definitely check out Aaron's office hours, he is a great help during them!
Aaron is hands down the best teacher I've ever had high school - uni so far. He provides dry sarcastic humour as well as corny jokes that still leave you laughing. I look forward to the class every week and learned skills that will help me in every class paper. So thankful to be his student
I found his class challenging but learned a lot of skills throughout the term. He's always willing to compromise and improve the quality of his class and received grades. He was a great prof! Sarcasm was frequently used and a hard marker.
Everyone I talked to in his course felt the same way as I did. He is a very subjective and hard marker, if you do not write what he wants, you will get no better than a C, which I learned too late in the course. Overall, his class was a waste as the writing techniques he teaches cannot be applied to most other courses.
worst class i took first year. too much work you'll drown. you learn and are forced to use pointless techniques you will never use in university and that you will never understand.
Though his class is hard he is the kind of prof that really cares whether you pass or not, his door was always open if help was required and he was always willing to answer questions, however be ready to work hard in his course this is not a bird course
Professor Tucker is wonderful. I actually miss going to his class. So helpful and quirky. He IS a hard marker and you have to put real effort into the class and do the readings (especially the course reader articles) but if you do then you will get a lot out of this class and enjoy doing so. He knows everyone in the class by name and really cares.
Loved him. Would undoubtedly & strongly recommend him. Super helpful but you have to be willing to work on your skills. He is funny and sarcastic and just amazing. Teaching method has been polished through years obviously. Strict about cellphone use etc but makes participation and discussions easy so do it!
Great class. Improved creative writing skills immensely. Course delivered with eclectic humour. Prepare to attend classes, buy and read courseware book, write online postings, and bring peer edits (mandatory). Office hours are incredibly helpful, so use them. This class is not for the faint-hearted (the reality of a university writing elective).
Aaron Tucker is by far the most amazing professor at Ryerson! As a first year student and reading the previous comments on this page before entering his class, I was a bit scared, but now I know they were all wrong! I'm telling you that you won't regret taking his class! He explains every detail and if you follow them, you won't get less than a B!
This course turned out to be a waste for my English degree. Attendance is a must, however many lectures he would just repeat what he said the week before. A very tough grader, however if you write exactly what he wants you to write, with no room for your own personal creativity, you should be fine (which I learned too late).
It takes a while to like Tucker, but he's a great professor. He is a hard marker and is very clear with what he expects for assignments and is willing to look over your work to give feedback prior to the due date. The textbook is essential to passing the course as you need to learn how to apply certain concepts from it.
Not too bad. Hard and boring class but he really tries to get you engaged and help you out.
Very useful course, but he makes you work for the grade. Lots of reading and fairly difficult marker, but he makes it his duty to help you out as much as he can by giving tons of feedback on all assignments and by giving you as much one on one time as you need. Participation and team work is important to him and your grade will depend on it.
Honestly, everyone calls this man a tough grader, which is in my opinion quite unjust for him because he is not as hard as most people think he is. He makes what he wants on your papers very clear, if you are able to pull it off, you get an A. Besides, make sure you go see him during office hours before you write any paper, his comments are useful.
hes cool
Overall such an awesome dude, his class is difficult but so helpful for writing papers..... He really cares about his students, and is super easy going.
Absolutely adored this prof. Not only is he super effective and clear during lectures, but he is hilarious. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He gives major feedback on assignments both in class and during office hours. If you Put in an effort, he rewards you with help.
Overall, I was quite disappointed in the course and the way it was taught. Professor Tucker had many unnecessary requirements, such as requiring you to print off long readings (sometimes 30+ pages) that you could have simply read online instead, saving money; if you fail to print a reading, he takes off marks. Would not take again.
The best English prof at Ryerson, easily. Really inspires you not only to work hard and become a better writer, but really engage in class and with material. He's hilarious and gives amazing feedback. He honestly cares about his students and learned everyone's name by the second class. Always available to meet after class too!
Do not miss class or come late, you will be called out in front of the class. For every assignment GO GET EXTRA HELP DURING OFFICE HOURS, he will help you get your ideas together. He gives examples from previous students who did very well in his course and shows their essays and assignments, READ THEM, MEMORIZE THEM! This Prof has high expectations
Quite the package wrapped in skinny jeans & dry humor . He's the only one in the English department with a line-up of students outside the office waiting. He gives great feedback without impacting on the flavour of your own style or ideas. He's pretty passionate about the lit so you'd better come ready to read & talk. Unequivocally awesome.
One of My Favourite Professors. If you're willing to put in the effort he will give his all to help you reach your goals. His class helps you achieve good academic standing in not only his class but others. By the end of the semester you'll be able to write at a higher level without extra help if you put the effort in. Great Prof! Funny too!
Aaron is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about what he teaches that 8am classes were something to look forward to. He is always ready to help you and he is quite understanding and willing to negociate marks if you feel you deserve higher and why. You have to buy the course pack and read and participate and write to your hearts content!
Overall he's an okay Prof. He posts all slides online but if you don't go to class you won't pass. Attendance matters and is a good chunk of your grade.
He's and amazing prof, it's a three hour class but I love going because he actually cares
Tucker is a good prof.. in lectures. But then when he goes home and marks your paper he slaughters them. He does a good job explaining the course concepts and is actually a really cool and likeable guy.. and SUPER helpful. But the course in general is just HARD so I would take this guy because he makes it a little more bearable
He is a very enthusiastic and hard working professor. He works hard to help students achieve the marks they deserve. He gives a lot of homework, but will give extensions if the reason is valid. He can be rude if nobody answers his question in class or he feels nobody is listening. Just answer McLuhan, it's probably right. Overall, a great prof.
Prof Tucker if you read previous ratings is nothing like that. After reading how he was I was scared to have him. But I must say he is one of the best profs I have had. His assignments are straight to the point, once the midterm is done he spends the rest of the semester teaching you how to improve. You have to go to office hours it helps. Great!!!
I found this prof to infantilize his students. He speaks very slowly during lecture, leaving lots of space for you to answer his questions. I found this annoying, I wish the course moved more quickly. He also requires a great deal of homework just for participation, which doesn't feel worth my time, and reacts rudely if it is incomplete.
Aaron is a really helpful professor. He gives extremely clear criteria for work. As long as you come to class, pay attention and ask questions, there isn't a way you can't pass with a good grade.
I was an awful student in Aaron's class because I really hated the material. That being said, he is a fantastic professor and he will do ANYTHING to help you. He's very kind and almost a bit soft spoken(?). If you go to class and do your best he will appreciate it and you will do well
If you want a class to get your creative juices flowing with a professor who will support you along the way, take Aaron's class. Like other comments have stated, he's very kind, pretty funny, cares about students and the course material. He gives awesome feedback, don't be afraid to approach and GO TO CLASS you might find a love for writing :)
Overall Aaron is a great guy, he makes a very boring class somewhat entertaining, don't goof off in class though because he will embaress you in front of everyone and it will be so funny too. He is tough though, you really have to try hard in that class but you do get alot of it.
so. much. attitude. Pretty much, if you want to pass his course, you have to do it his way. Show up to class (on time!) , participate, and absolutely no phones. SSH205 was essentially like a high school class. He can be pretty sassy and will always find something wrong with your writing. He even admitted to editing the "A" level examples he shows.
A great professor who really cares about his students and tries to keep the course content relevant and exciting. Requires a lot of work but it's manageable if you go to class and participate/ask questions. I went through a rough patch during the semester and met with me outside of class and he was really understanding and gave helpful feedback.
Aaron Tucker was a pretty good teacher for this course. You could tell he knew what he was talking about in his lectures. He posts all of his slides online at the end of the week so if you miss a class its not big deal (besides the fact you are graded on attendance). He makes it seem like you need the textbook but honestly I barely used it.
Professor Tucker's lectures were clear, open to questions/discussion, and all content was posted on d2l. He's very open to meeting during office hours and wants every student to do well.
Such a good prof, very funny and makes class interesting. Make sure you attend every lecture (on time) and don't use phones, talk during the class, etc. because he WILL call you out in front of the entire class. Pretty specific about what he wants, not too difficult as long as you pay attention and read the requirements for assignments
he wasnt a bad prof but he really goes by the book and his three story thesis. if you do everything exactly as he wants then youll be fine in his class. and if you dont show up to class he'll know lol.
Tucker is a bit of an eccentric. I want to badmouth his course/teaching but I ultimately became a better writer from his critiques and content so I can't complain. He definitely knows the content, and if you do what he asks it's pretty hard to do poorly. Personally, he is seriously petty.
Uninspiring. SSH205 is an attempt to inject artificial nuance into people's writing. This prof preaches specialized arguments, even when the readings he provides are meta-hogwash texts like Marshall McLuhan. Both McLuhan and Tucker prove that when English professors study "technology", the resulting works are unintelligible nonsense.
Aaron is an awesome professor! He has a youthful vibe and keeps class discussion really interesting. He also loves to answer questions and is very knowledgeable in the courses he teaches.
He is a great prof but he doesn't explain how to write a body essay. tTakes forever to explain the thesis but you would not know how to write the body and then get a bad grade on it.
I like the guy. I can't relate with others accusing him of not really helping them improve their writing, or that they got a lower grade for following their own essay style. This course is academic writing, and prof Tucker is an expert on this area, and if you follow his teachings, you'll do well. Personally, my writing improved.
This professor is not helpful in the slightest. Ive heard stories of people going into his office hours and coming out empty handed. Dry personality as well, half-hearted laughs as well as a monotonous voice. He robs students of creative freedom, he wants essays done his way and ONLY in the way he specified or else you will not get a good grade.
Professor Tucker is a prof I absolutely wanted to love, but never really could. It's really evident that he cares about what he does, and is accessible outside of class. Unfortunately, I found him to be extremely condescending and often times, somewhat rude. He doesn't mark too hard, but his classes are a chore to attend, and are not enjoyable.
Amazing Professor! He geniunly cares about his students, and does his best to help you succeed. The class is a chore to attend, but he does joke around here and there to make it better. He marks fair, so make sure you follow the rubric and criteria to know exactly what youre supposed to do. Make sure you attend ALL your classes and are NOT late.
Bad attitude towards teaching
He clearly knows his stuff, but he's tough and expects a lot from his students. He made it clear that he personally disliked me. Will use all 3 hrs of the lecture. I put a fair bit of effort into this class and could never get an A on anything, was always stuck in the B range. His feedback is useful if you ask him for help privately though.
Professor Tucker is someone who has very strict and concise rules to follow but if you abide by his guidelines it is not very hard to do well. He states that by learning his methods of essay writing it will make you a better writer in all of your classes but they rarely can apply. Lectures are vital as he marks participation.
Amazing prof! Such a nice professor, and throughout my academic career I have grown to appreciate him. Genuinely cares for what a student says, was able to add onto my creative ideas, and I took his class back in 2016. I would recommend going to see him one-on-one during office hours, as he explains things more in depth.
WORST COURSE AND PROF OF MY LIFE!!! He is such a tough grader and although he hates the typical high-school-taught hamburger essays, he teaches another heavily structural style which if not followed sentence by sentence (no matter if it makes sense), you will get a C. Plus his entire course is not necessary, as each prof likes diff styles of essay.
Adds unnecessary pain to the process of writing. He will make you feel, if not straight up tell you, that youre a bad writer. Wants specific structure in essays, yes, but youre no better off following it in any other class. Conceited but applies the same in depth pedagogy as a hamburger essay high school teacher, in a suit jacket.
An amazing prof that cares for his students success. Sets you up to do well and succeed in the course and in all other classes. Best Prof Ive had yet
Go to class. Ask questions. Email him. The more you interact with him, the better your grade will be. Yes, you have to work for your grade, but applying what I learned from this class to other classes drastically changed my writing level for the better. Others say he's strict and meticulous, but he only does so to make his students better writers.
Prof Tucker is available for extra help after class I recommend taking essay drafts to him first before submitting as it can really help boost your grade. Essays are marked fair and getting an A in the class is doable but takes a lot of effort. Just go to the prof for extra help and complete the mark boosters.
I owe Dr. Tucker a lot. He was the first professor I had in my university career and he made me a better essay writer, taught me the importance of specificity and being clear about what I'm arguing. He also has a great fashion sense! If you take your role as a student seriously, you'll love him!
He gives you tools to actually improve your writing and gain an understanding of what makes strong writing. He is a tough (but fair) marker and if you get him to walk you through his feedback, it's helpful. His class was my favourite class I've taken in university! He is engaging and interesting as a lecturer. Only beef was his brutal penmanship!
Although the content can get difficult, Prof. Tucker is willing to help you if you put in the work. Highly recommend him!
It is a writing class so expect a lot of it. Every week he asks for updates on your essay based o what you learned in class. It is a lot of work especially combined with papers from other classes, but he does gives you tips to improve your writting in general. Took it on Winter 2020 and we had 1 week to write the final essay when we moved online.
Participation grades are heavy so complete them, he marks hard. Unless you're on his good side will do anything he can to stop you from getting an A. He personally took away 5% from my final assignment a day before grades were due citing it as (I didn't meet criteria). Attend class and appeal to his very large ego to get on his good side.
Aaron Tucker is among the best profs in his department. I always hated writing based courses, but his teaching method is cohesive and understandable. He is also very accommodating to students with extenuating circumstances that hinder their academic output. Just try to show up in class, his lectures are actually quite informative.
Professor Tucker is very personable and respectful! He makes a really good effort to make the course interesting with his lectures. The class was set up in such a way that made it hard to do poorly. Almost each week he expected us to submit homework but, each acted like a stepping stone to aid the students in their final paper. I learned a lot!
Super understanding and helpful, very willing to answer questions, in class or through email. Though i found this class unnecessary, he made it enjoyable. Solid prof., boring class. Homework is due often but in reasonable amounts.
Please take this professor. The professor genuinely cares about his students' well-being and is quite accommodating. Content is actually interesting enough to make it enjoyable. Quizzes every week, very simple as long as you attend classes and participate. I would definitely take him again.
Would not recommend this prof. He expects students to write as if they have a PhD. Gives harsh feedback and seems like he does not consider the fact that we are first and second year students who do not know how to write as well as him. Extremely frustrating and not motivating at all.
VERY harsh feedback, will tell you you should fail. Expects us to write like he can when we are only in first year. He is unmotivating and this class caused me so much stress that I was considering dropping it during the last month. He is only nice in person, and rude over email and does not give clear answers. Would recommend avoiding if possible.
Not sure if the course is horrible or the prof is. Homework basically every week and I can't stand a 3hr lecture with him. His feedback is harsh, told me that he would fail me. Expectations are high and his course material on d2l is super unorganized. I would've dropped the course if it wasn't required for my program.
Tucker knows his stuff, but he's not a great teacher. He does a poor job of explaining his approach to essay writing. Maybe it's how the course is structured, but it all feels like an arbitrary mess. Although he is admirably honest in his feedback, he is also slightly condescending, which makes it difficult to like him.
Prof. Tucker is condescending and repetitive; he gives constant negative feedback and essentially makes you dread class. I didn't learn much from his class because he wanted us to move away from the 'hamburger' essay but then forced us into his own essay format that isn't used in any other class. I would've dropped this if it weren't required.
Very supportive and always encourages students to ask questions and go to his office hours. High expectations when grading papers. Can get a bit close physically during 1 on 1 questions if you aren't comfortable with that, but not out of malice. Overall, professor has high expectations that he clearly sets out, but may be hard to meet grade wise.
One of the best prof I ever had. Remember to attend all the lectures and finish all the homework, and you will get a good grade.
This course is so boring. He is nice in person, weirdly rude over email and in feedback. The entire course he repeated the same thing over again and EVERY topic is the same. This course should be called "intro to AI" because you will ONLY learn about ChatGPT and AI. The lecture is 3 hours long which i didn't feel was necessary. AVOID.
He is a really caring teacher who genuinely wants the best for his students. The course itself is quite hard though, so don't expect an easy A. Even though the lectures aren't mandatory, they're really helpful and you will definitely do better in the course if you go! He definitely made the course more enjoyable for me!
Professor Tucker genuinely cares about his students. This is a hard course but he makes it impossible for you to fail as he gives a lot of help and lots of useful feedback. For as long as you attend the class you will be fine as he is always willing to provide extra help for his students.
The only way someone could do poorly in this class is if they ignored the MANY opportunities for help the professor provides. He treats every student as an individual and will explain his feedback in detail if you ask. He took my writing from barely passable at a high school level to something I can use in university. Go to class and ask questions.
He's definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had! There will be homework every week but it isn't anything too unmanageable and is always based on the prior week's hw. He was also super kind and accommodating to me throughout the semester so I highly recommend!!! :)
Professor Tucker saw each student as an individual, and if you asked for help he would provide it. Plenty of chances to do well in the course, and he would explain his feedback to you clearly and in detail. Very clear with what he expects from you, and will go over it in class to make sure everybody understands. Overall, a great professor.
Extremely kind and compassionate prof. Clear lecturer and gives extensive feedback. Easy to do well as long as you attend lectures, do the homework, and listen to feedback. Wayyyy too much content about AI though it didn't interest me in the slightest and there were hardly any other options (if any) for assignments.
a teacher before a professor honestly, sets every student up for success, always responds to emails and makes time for extra office hours if need be, literally learned everyone's name -- the only way to mess up with Tucker is to literally try to fail (plus, literally wrote the textbook so it can be free to his students)
