He is very clear in lecture but the tests are pretty hard. He was very tricky sometimes which I did not appreciate. The lab was poorly organized and my TA sucked so I did not enjoy it. Overall, he was a solid lecturer.
Helpful Professor. Was not boring and gave good examples. Exams were not hard, as long as you followed along in class you could pretty much guess what was going to be on them.
Great professor, the best physics lectures can get. Very interesting and funny, and unless you're taking a morning class sleeping isn't common during lecture. Clear with lectures. Also held extra Q&A session every week which was very helpful. Approachable and I think he was cute just because I have a thing for nerds. He's young and sociable.
I had him for physics 1201W and 1202W. he is probably one of the best professors we have at the u. his lectures are very clear and easy to follow. he is funny and generous. I would def recommend him to anyone who has to take physics!
AWESOME professor. Even though it was a summer class, I hated physics beforehand, but he changed my perspective. Go to his office hours and he'll help you on anything, and probably give hints about the test too. Top shelf kind of guy.
He recognizes that a lot of students in his classes are not innately interested in physics, but does his very best to grab our interest and provide applications that relate to biology and medicine. He is also very approachable and amicable; go to his office hours for a ton of help! His lectures are great; I laugh every single day in class.
Hilarious hilarious man. Easily approachable. His teaching is clear, and does many demonstrations. Difficulty is just right. Although 1201W has 4 lectures in a week, you'll want to go to all of them. If you have a choice, take the class with Wynveen.
Very good lecturer, very clear and makes lectures interesting to attend. Only bad thing is his tests are rather difficult and tricky.
Wynveen is awesome. He does everything he can to make the boring material interesting (demos, jokes) and he actually succeeds -- I really enjoyed going to lecture, and I laughed every day. Tests are tricky but if you go to every lecture it's easy to predict what will be on them. Everyone loves Wynveen. You will too.
Great professor and really helpful. The tests aren't actually that bad; they are very similar to the practice test and homework. If you have the chance, take Wynveen.
I'm not terribly interested in physics or particularly good at it, but thankfully I had Aaron there. You know what to expect on the test, homework is very helpful. The class is great deal of work but you get what you put into it. Take physics with Wynveen if at all possible!
Best physics professor, i have marshak for 1302, and wynveen is 100x better, wynveen actually teaches. I thought his class was tough, but then realize now how easy he made it. wynveen is the best hands down
Very funny and explains the subject matter clearly. Tests are difficult, but if you take notes diligently in class you will have an idea of what he is going to ask about. The only negative about him is his handwriting - make sure you sit close to the board, otherwise you'll be in the back trying to guess what he is writing.
Just perfect!
Aaron is a very sweet guy and really cares about his students. I didn't have much interest in physics to begin with but he made that class fun and interesting! The material is difficult but Aaron goes out of his way to make it understandable and keep the class engaged. Great and refreshing professor! Take class with Wynveen!
I wish he taught all of my courses.
TAKE WYNVEEN! Really! Best general physics prof you can get here. He actually teaches, is engaging, and very helpful during office hours. I had someone else for 1301 (Marshak) and 1302 was an IMMENSELY better experience and I learned much more. Highly recommend this professor.
Aaron is amazing! Such a friendly guy and very easy to talk with outside of class. He is very passionate about physics and genuinely wants his students to succeed. Class was always fun and I learned a lot, even though I am not a physics fan. Very reasonable grader. You can tell he actually likes to teach, unlike many profs. Take his class!!
Aaron was the best physics professor I've had to date. His lectures are engaging and challenging. He somehow manages to break down the abstract concepts to simple acceptable rules that have perfect analogies in everyday life. I would take this course again if only to have him as a professor again.
Aaron is hilarious and really passionate about physics. The fact that lectures are funny is one of the reasons I enjoyed going to lecture. Exams are fair but difficult since it is physics. Lab is honestly the biggest waste of time though. I highly recommend Aaron, super helpful.
He's a great guy. I had him for discussion and he was really helpful. More helpful than lectures. 1401V is tough though.
Professor Wynveen is without a doubt the best science professor I've ever had. I'm trying hard not to exaggerate, but you can tell that as a person, he is humble, kind, and brilliant. I have a deeper interest and appreciation for science after taking his class. Physics with Wynveen is a GOOD decision!
Pros: less calculus, easier to understand than the other physics profs at the U, generous curve. Cons: lectures do not prepare you for the exams, labs and discussion are worthless. Probably the best physics prof at the U, which unfortunately is not saying much.
nice guy
Those who complain about Wynveen should go take other physics professors at the U and see how lucky they were. I was in another professor's class and absolutely hated him with a passion. I happened to be in Wynveen's lecture one day and realized that one must change his/her grad planner to get Wynveen at all costs (even postponing graduation).
He's a really great professor. I don't even like physics but I do enjoy learning from him. Unfortunately his exams are very hard to prepare for. Doing practice problems from the book or discussion really isn't enough, but there's not much else you can do.
He's a really nice guy. I liked going to class even if it was almost everyday and its physics. The class is still pretty hard, but I think I had a better understanding of it because of Aaron. If you have a choice take this class with him.
Man this class could be tough. But Wynveen made it feel totally worth it. I'm not an engineering student but I'm definitely really interested Physics II stuff now. He's funny and cares about his subject. If you care to listen, he'll make it worth your while.
Professor Wynveen is a great. I took honors physics first semester, which totally took away any interest I had had in physics, but thanks to Wynveen, I like physics again. He is clear and helpful, approachable, and he really cares about his students understanding the material. Office hours and Friday sessions are very helpful.
Fantastic Professor!! I absolutely loved the lecture portion of this class. It was my last class of my day, but Prof. Wynveen kept it interesting and explained things clearly. I would definitely recommend taking notes on the chapters as well and for future students: ACTUALLY DO THE WEBASSIGN. Do not just look up the answer key! Enjoy Physics!
Physics is dreadfully hard; Wynveen doesn't change that. He keeps the course very challenging, but he might be the most helpful professor I've ever had. He held an optional review session every Friday & his office hours are very helpful. He's a very clear & informative lecturer and makes hilarious jokes. A must for anyone who struggles with Physics
Best physics professor in 1000 level!!
Dr. Wynveen is without a doubt one of the best physics professors at the U. He makes the material interesting and is extremely helpful and approachable during office hours. Very nice guy, always keeps lectures interesting. I would recommend anyone that wants to actually learn and enjoy physics to take it with him.
The course material is not easy by any means, but Professor Wynveen keeps the lectures interesting and is always willing to answer questions. I suggest making sure to understand all the homework and practice exams as he tends to put similar questions on the actual exams!
Not a bad professor, certainly the best physics professor I've had though. Didn't do too well in the course but that's mostly because I don;t give 2 sh!ts about physics. Really funny and uses the blackboard as opposed to slides so you can see his thought process. I would definitely take other courses taught by him.
Very enthusiastic and fun professor. Often gave fun demos and real-life situations to explain the material. Lectures were very clear, and often enjoyable. The tests and discussion problems were straight-forward but morbid (many of these problems involve the possibility of someone dying.) Test questions usually came from lecture and discussion.
Best physics teacher in the department, hands down. Aaron gives lots of examples, which are similar to his exam questions. His jokes are great and really keep the dull-ness of physics low. I will surprisingly miss physics after this semester because of this course. Take phys with Aaron!
Hands down the best physics prof at the U. If you can get him make sure that you do. Very relatable, and makes lectures interesting using humor, stories and demos. His test are fairly tough, but there is a pretty generous curve.
I had Professor Wynveen as an assistant professor where he gave some lectures, led recitation sections, and held extensive office hours, working with us well past posted times. He explains difficult concepts very clearly while keeping lectures entertaining and relatable. Would definitely recommend. Take physics with Wynveen.
Funny professor that makes the classroom enjoyable. Need to do tons of practice problems to do well, but tests are fair enough.
Funny professor and explains the concepts very clearly. Lectures are kept interesting with several demos every day. Definitely a hard class, but I felt that the tests/grading were fair. Only complaint is that lab felt completely useless and just a time-sink...
Professor Wynveen was clear and thorough on his lectures, and he made them interesting by being funny! The subject is hard but he does a good job of breaking everything down and covering everything. He really cares about the students, he used to be one here so he understands. Reasonable curve! One of the best physics professors at the U by far.
Want to learn German and Physics at the same time? This professor is for you!
Overall fantastic professor, held multiple extended hours and optional lectures to go over material in depth, lectures are fantastic, but you're fine if you miss a few. Labs are easily the worst part of the class as they're just annoyingly time consuming and your grade is based on the TA you get.
Wyveen is the best physics teacher I've ever had! He's like a Sheldon Cooper in real world. Lectures are hilarious and interesting. The material itself is not easy, and so is all physics courses. He's made the learning process very pleasant. He does tend to skip easy steps, though.
Ive taken physics many times in my career, and so far this is the most interesting physics course yet, and i just so happen to understand what he is saying. He teaches really well, and makes the most boring of topics interesting. He seems to be in tune with students and makes an effort to keep you awake and attentive. 1010 would take again
Wynveen makes his lectures engaging and I feel like I've learned a lot about physics in his class. He is a very helpful guy and is very interactive with his classes, which helps. Sometimes, class material differs in scope from his exams (why so many derivations if you don't care about them?), but an overall good physics experience.
Wynveen was an exceptionally clear lecturer who helped each student understand curriculum. Held frequent office hours, got to know students personally and was always eager to help. Would highly recommend for any intro physics course
He has probably been my favorite professor in all of college, and I don't like physics. I went in hating physics, but after taking it with him, I can say it's not the worst class ever.
Just as you would expect from a physics professor, Wynveen is extremely smart. Sometimes, he blows past things in lecture that are hard for others to understand. Other than that, he's funny, is willing to meet with students, and is generous with his curving. Tests are quite hard, however.
This class takes up a lot of your time, but he's a great professor.
Probably the best professor I've had at the U of M. Helpful, funny, and wants you to succeed. He is very focused on helping premed students learn what they need to learn and is willing to get to know you and write reference letters. Don't buy the custom texts, order the whole thing online for cheaper.
Prof. Wynveen makes a difficult class bearable and even enjoyable by breaking down the material in a clear and understandable way. He goes above and beyond making himself available to students in several weekly office hours where he goes over the weekly homework. He's an excellent lecturer and overall one of the best professors I've had at the U.
Professor Wynveen may my favorite teacher/professor I have ever had in college. Not only are his lectures helpful with a tough subject such as physics, but they are also very interesting! I would highly recommend taking the night class to get Professor Wynveen because he cares, he is hilarious, and he will make you want to attend physics lectures.
Professor Wynveen is awesome. I've taken Physics 1201W and 1202W with him now and he's done a great job teaching. He's entertaining too. If you pay attention, ask questions, and put a good effort in, you'll do great.
Wynveen is a great professor!! He is funny and makes long lectures better. He also is always willing to help. The quizzes were tough but fair.
Wynveen writes tough tests but will end up grading generously, and he is funny, smart, and helpful. If you want a nice, solid physics professor to take, take Wynveen. The only other professor that is worthwhile to take for this class is Pawlowski. Also, if you like to skip class, this man is the guy because he doesn't require clickers.
Cares for your grade as much as you do. Hilarious comments, awesome demos, clear explanation, huge curve. Tests are really tough, but you'll be surprised at how far you've got when you do well. Greatest on the personal level, ends class early to help students on homework, office hours are mini classes. Pretty sad that we have only 2 lecs left :(
I wish I could take all my physics classes from Wynveen. He has such hilarious comments in lecture, I never make it through without laughing once. He's SO smart and kind. I've stayed after lecture a couple times talking with him and other students for more than an hour... he's so wonderful to talk to and he really cares about his students.
His office hours are very helpful, he waters down harder concepts whilst explaining them in class. The class is hard but the curve is generous. Ends class early to help with homework. He is very conversational and loves to joke to lighten any tension. Take physics with him, its worth it.
Professor Wynveen is a great professor, he really knows his stuff and is good at teaching it. He's hilarious and that helped keep me awake during the lectures. He really cares about students and does his best to make sure we have the knowledge to do well on tests. Although the class material was fairly difficult, he made it enjoyable.
The exams are overall pretty fair if you do the assigned problems and attend lecture everyday. Professor Wynveen is really good at teaching the material and is extremely generous with the curve. Take his class, and it'll sure make physics bearable.
The lectures provided by Aaron covered all the material the tests covered. By being in lecture and taking notes on the topics he clearly hinted at made the class extremely passable. I skipped about half the lectures and was still able to do well with hw and test. The lab/discussion portion was free points by attending and participating.
Tests are hard but fair. Review old tests and discussion problems for that section when studying.
Wynveen is a good guy. He means well and he teaches fairly well. 1201 was better than 1202, but that is due to the fact that teaching things we can't see is harder. I skipped a lot of class, but went to discussions and did fine. The textbook for 1201 was good, not so much for 1202. I recommend going to his class, or sharing notes.
I took physics with Wynveen last semester and it was phenomenal. He really knows how to engage students and how to approach problems of all difficulty levels. Very knowledgeable and approachable, I really admire him. If you have the chance to take Physics with Wynveen, do it.
I had him for physics 1101W and it was the first time he's taught it, and I love him. He's hilarious and teaches the subject matter really well. I'm not a big fan of physics, but he teaches the material so clearly that it's hard not to understand what he's teaching about. Plus he gives the formulas on all the tests & your lowest midterm is dropped!
Aaron is great professor, inspirational, loves Physics. But, 1201W is extremely hard - went about 2X fast as 1101W. If you don't have to take 1201W, take 1101W. 1201W is way faster and way harder tests. Averages are 50 to 65. All prob's on Exams are not seen on HW or any practice quizzes. Beware. Don't take 1201 if not req'd. If u want A, take 1101
Aaron is very inspirational and enthusiastic, but at least 90% of lecture is unnecessary theory and deriviations of equations. Only sometimes shows examples and how to solve problems, which are all basic. On Exams, problems are really hard. Unfortunately, textbook is Black/White. Boring with little examples. I used other books to learn concepts.
best professor
Wynveen's lectures are really enjoyable to be at. He makes them interesting and fun with experiments and jokes. His exams are hard but fair. If you study and review the problems he gives as homework you will do fine. His office hours help a lot if you don't understand something because he is easy to talk to and ask questions. Great professor.
Aaron does a great job at teaching the material. I underestimated the difficulty of the 1st exam and didn't study. I received at 34% on my first exam, luckily 1 exam gets drop. Class average is using 70-5%. Read the book, do the hw problems and be prepare for discussion will help you pass. Also do the reading questions, it is concept based.
I came into physics thinking it was going to be really tough and that it was going to be one of those classes I barely pass. Wynveen makes lectures very enjoyable and cracks a lot of jokes. His office hours are EXTREMELY helpful, I 100% recommend going to them & his practice exams prepare you for the actual exam. I would definitely recommend him!!
Makes physics manageable. Would highly recommend a Chegg account, as it gives all the textbook problems and their step-by-step solutions, which made HW and test review easy. Only 4 out of 13 labs you'll do will have lab reports, which is nice. 5 exams total. Overall, not too bad.
He made physics lectures something I enjoyed. That should say enough in itself. Funny, intelligent, great professor.
He's probably gonna be the best option for ya. He knows what he's doing which is stellar. And his office hours is going over the homework for the week so that was my saving grace. My TA was fair and helpful. Overall the class was laid back (unlike chem) but please dont fall behind. Figure out your weak points after you get the test back!
Wynveen is the best option for a physics professor! He is a very entertaining lecturer because he is always asking for volunteers as well as answering questions in more of a conversation manner than anything. Read the syllabus before class starts so that you understand due dates for all of the assignments.
You will love him.
BEST GENERAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR! I don't like physics and I loved his class. Aaron cares about his students and presents the material in a way that is easy to understand. His tests are very fair!
Prof Wynveen is a great professor who clearly loves to teach. His humor during the lectures helps to lighten the mood during the lectures. If you need help, take advantage of his office hours, he will go over anything you need help with.
Hated physics but loved Wynveen! Tests are hard but studying and doing as many practice problems are you possibly can help a TON! Sadly, unable to attend his office hours but have only heard good things about them!
The class is hard, exam averages are super low (shockingly low, even for science classes in college) but Professor Wynveen makes physics tolerable to those of us who hate it. He's hilarious and really smart and makes going to class enjoyable.
Dr. Aaron Wynveen genuinely cares about his students and their success. He is hilarious, kind, caring, understanding, and is easily the best physics, if not one of the best overall, professors at the U. His tests are tough, but fair, and he provides multiple opportunities for exam practice. Go to office hours if you can, they will help immensely.
Serious love for this man. He is super funny (& awkward) so lectures are engaging altho he does go fast sometimes & it took a bit to decipher his handwriting. His office hours are amazing so definitely go to those. He doesn't like it when people call him by his first name so be sure to be respectful. Neat dude. Incredibly intelligent. Much traveled
Wynveen is one of the best profs I have had at the U! He is very nice and approachable as well as interesting to watch during lecture (which is nice because the topics of this course SUCK). His demos are interesting and his jokes are cringeworthy enough to make you laugh. 10/10 lecturer.
He does lot of demos and cracks jokes to keep lecture entertaining. Only 4 lab reports throughout the course which are only 4 pages long each. Exams are super tough. Exam questions are much harder than what you see on the HW and lecture. Exams are curved to make up for this. Hardly any calculus involved. You'll never have to use calc on exams.
Aaron is Probably best physics prof. at the U. Before taking 2 physics courses at the U, I loved physics. Now I don't. Not because of Aaron but of the material and speed it was taught. Aaron makes it bearable. Funny. Interesting. For last half of 2nd semester I did not go to single lecture. Did a lot better. 78% was B+. His curve is unbelievable
Aaron's lecture is very inspirational. He cares about students a lot and he would use real life examples to illustrate the physics behind them. His lectures are fun and his teaching style is very clear. I enjoyed his class a lot and he made me want to major in physics.
Wynveen was the best physics professor I have had. He took the time to clearly explain the complicated concepts and was very approachable to students. He made sure to give many applicable examples and made sure that the students were following along with him.
Take. His. Class. I decided to minor in physics because of this guy. For most people physics is the absolute worst but Wynveen made physics lecture the highlight of my week. He's the absolute best teacher I've had in any subject in my entire academic career.
Love this guy, may not have gotten the grade I wanted but he got me through this class. He could honestly fail you in his class and you would still love him.
He was a wonderful teacher! Extremely smart and caring. He never tried to trick you on tests. Just pay attention and do the homework and you will be fine! Also get CHEGG. It will help your grade.
Wynveen is a great Professor. He makes lectures interesting and is very passionate about Physics. It's not an easy class but if you pay attention in class, do the homework, and study for exams you'll do well. His tests are difficult but fair and he's clear about what will be on exams.
Hes aces. Class was very hard - but it had been a decade since I barely passed high school physics. He demands a lot of you but gives you everything you need to succeed - tons of (great) office hours; thorough solutions to exams, discussion, and homework; tough but meticulous/thoughtful tests. Great/kinda fun class! Quizzes were (heavily) curved.
Wynveen is the best physics professor at this school. I hate physics with a fiery passion but he made it so worth it to go to lecture every day. He knows his stuff and his lectures are engaging and hilarious. I'm putting off taking 1202W until I see he is teaching it, I don't want anyone else for these classes
Amazing teacher. I looked forward to coming to his class everyday, because he always put me in a better mood. His teaching style is very chill and he is very open to all sorts of questions at any point in time. He truly cares that his students do well if they strive to do so and are willing to put in the effort.
I absolutely dreaded taking physics but Dr. Wynveen made it tolerable. He is an amazing lecturer, always does plenty of practice problems (and sometimes hw questions) in class, and breaks down hard problems into easier steps. The exams are tough, but working through old hw, discussion questions, and practice exams are a good way to study.
Really nice and hilarious guy. Unfortunately, his tests are incredibly hard. I understand that he wants a distribution, but is it too much to ask to be tested on the material he actually taught? Tests will always throw something at you that you've never seen before. One good thing is he tries to make lectures as interesting as possible.
Dr. Wynveen is a great guy, cares about his students, & is hilarious in lecture! The tests were related to what we talked about in-class, but he frequently required us to make leaps between various concepts that he had never covered in-class. This made tests unreasonably hard. The exams are MUCH harder than the homework and the discussion problems.
Aaron makes lots of jokes in class and fun to listen to compared to others. There is a lot of homework assignments but grading is clear. The class is curved, but the tests are graded strictly so watch out.
Prof. Wynveen was hilarious and actually managed to do the impossible- make physics fun (or at last not nearly as bad as it could be). I actually enjoyed going to lecture everyday. His lectures directly related to homework and quizzes, plus you knew the types of things on the quizzes based on lecture. If you're going to take 1201, take Wynveen!
Goofy and nice but also a great teacher. His lectures focus on working through problems in detail using the formulas. Four midterms (drop worst 1) and a cumulative final. Exams aren't easy but not really harder than the tougher homewrk probs each week. Do practice tests, homewrk and discussion Qs to study. Skim the book for guidance on homewrk.
Aaron is the best professor I've had at the U of M. He is very easy to understand and makes a hard class like physics manageable. He is also easy to ask questions to and willing to help/explain things. Do the homework problems and practice quizzes to study.
I have never had Wynveen as a professor. However, he has subbed in to our class quite a few times this semester. If you can take him, do it. I do not understand anything in physics unless he's the one who taught it to us. Even if it messes with your schedule, try your hardest to take him. Do not make the same mistake I did.
Wynveen was great, but 2 semesters in a row was a little much
The funniest professor I've ever had and his lectures are super engaging. The class is hard but manageable; you really have to put in the time and work for a good grade especially if calculus/physics isn't your strong suit.
Dr. Wynveen is by far one of the best professors Ive had at the U. I was really scared to take physics but not only did he break it down in a way that was understandable, but it was also enjoyable. I highly recommend going to his office hours! They are extremely helpful!
This class was hard! Wynveen was hilarious and so were his lectures. If youre thinking about taking 1301W, it is highly recommended that you understand physics a little before you start the class. Or at least be prepared to devote a lot of time to physics. The curve is really high though. He genuinely cares about his students.
Never taken a physics class in my life, and boy was this class difficult for me. His quizzes are extremely difficult, 75% on your own, 25% group, and one of the four is dropped. Wynveen is super funny, but I believe he is one of the more difficult 1301W professors. I managed to get a C+, and my saving grace was the lab portion of the class.
He is a good professor and a funny guy. But this class is perhaps one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Basically for each test you will be asked to apply concepts to new situations. You can do all problems in the world but still not understand what a question is asking or how to approach it.
His lecture notes and homework are very comparable to each other. I would say the homework is very reasonable in difficulty, but the tests are VERY DIFFICULT. They are so far from what the homework is and sometimes are impossible to understand.
Aaron is a really funny, entertaining, and a clear lecturer. Despite the other reviews, this class was not impossibly difficult in my experience, even though I did not take physics in high school. My point is, you will be fine if you pay attention, take notes, do the homework, and especially DO THE PRACTICE TESTS.
I was really afraid of this class because of what I had heard about the difficulty and the class being especially hard if you hadnt taken physics in high school. I came into this class with literally 0 physics knowledge and Wynveen has been an amazing prof. It honesty isnt bad at all, just put in the work and youll get a decent grade.
Last semester I took physics 1 with a different professor and had to withdraw because I didn't understand any of the concepts. I took it with Wynveen this semester and it's the best choice I've made in my academic career. It's not worth it to take physics with anyone else. His tests are fair and his notes are really helpful.
Wynveen is without a doubt one of the best profs I've had at UMN. Introductory physics (aside from the awful labs) is a joy to go to because he always brings such positive energy into lecture. It is a physics course so exam averages aren't great. Would recommend watching videos on specific problems rather than using homework and practice quizzes.
Professor Wynveen is really good at teaching the course and makes it pretty interesting as well. He also was very reasonable given the COVID-19 situation. In fact, I think he may have made some of the quizzes too easy, as the mode was a perfect score.
He's one of my favorite professors I've had. He was incredibly understanding about everyone's situations during COVID-19 and other events that happened over the summer and made sure to post the recorded Zoom lectures every day. He has a lot of bad dad jokes and was able to help apply physics concepts to real life.
Nice and friendly guy. Tests are fair. As long as you attend lecture and do the homework, it should be easy A. I can't stand the lecture as he repeats himself so much and treat college students like elementary school kids.
Hes amazing!! I think hes my favorite physics teacher/professor Ive had. He really likes to derive the formulas as well so we get a better understanding where physics concepts come into play and where they came from. He also takes his time explaining concepts in detail so we understand it almost completely. Homeworks a little tough though...
Best STEM prof I've ever had. Physics is difficult by itself, but if I had to take it with anyone it would be Wynveen. Don't take it with anyone else!! He's so sweet and doesn't make you feel dumb if you don't know something.
Great professor overall-he's nice and really cares about physics and will try his best to help you understand topics if you ask questions. Wish I had more time to put into his class to get a better grade, because it does take a lot of effort to do well. Would definitely recommend him, but he does talk and lecture fast if that's an issue for you.
I had Wynveen for 1221 and 1222 and he isn't a terrible professor. Physics is hard but I learned more from Organic Chemistry Tutor than him. Honestly, youtube is what helped me be in the top distribution of the class. The labs are a pain to get through. Weekly quizzes and lots of homework! Overall, as long as you put in the effort, it will show.
Get ready to dedicate many hours to reading the textbook and doing practice problems. Prof Wynveen gives engaging lectures and emphasizes active recall from past topics, which will be greatly helpful on the final. His lecture pacing is quite fast, though, and he uses the whiteboard, so if you're not used to it you may need to rewatch lectures.
This class was quite difficult but that's just because physics is a hard topic not because of any flaws with Prof. Wynveen. The lectures were extremely helpful and engaging. He's a really nice, entertaining guy who explains physics very intuitively and effectively. Office hours are also highly recommended.
Engaging lectures despite being online. Thought he did a good job of teaching for the most part. Per any other PHYS class, Wiley HW is crucial to success. Lectures did a good job of preparing you for that. Tests are fairly difficult but curved.
Physics is generally a pretty hard class, but the professor explains stuff pretty well in lecture. Definitely one of the best professors I've had. He really wants to make sure you understand the topic. Some quizzes were difficult, but he gives a generous curve. I don't like physics much, but overall great class.
Wynveen is easily the easiest of any professor I have had to watch in lectures. He is super helpful and friendly and genuinely a joy to have as a professor. But you do have to remember this is physics so don't expect to sleep the entire time and do well.
I was dreading 8 am lectures 3 days a week in physics but Wynveen made it fun. He was enthusiastic and genuinely excited to be there. He was consistently helpful and thorough during the lectures doing about the best job I can imagine a person doing covering that subject matter.
Professor Wynveen is by far the best professor I have had at the U of M. He makes physics fun to learn and I actually enjoyed going to class, which was the opposite of physics 1221. He makes exams that are fair and he takes time to make sure you understand the material. If you have the option to take a physics class with him you won't regret it!
If you are looking to take PHYS 1221 or 1221, I would DEFINITELY recommend taking with Aaron. He is so genuine and really awesome to listen to. His lectures are engaging, and he teaches the material in a way that is really easy to comprehend. I can't say enough how much I recommend him as a professor. He really made both my fall and summer semester
Fine professor, iffy on email response. Just teaches a hard course, so if you do not understand how to complete the questions on quizzes, it will be hard.
Prof Wynveen somehow made me actually enjoy going to physics class. The quizzes are pretty difficult, but it's definitely possible to do well on them if you do the homework and other practice problems. The class was also curved a little bit at the end of the semester which was nice.
Very enjoyable to see lecture, even at 8am could make my day a lot better. Professor Wynveen is a great teacher and offered many materials for review as well as informative lectures for homework and tests.
Really great professor, knows his stuff. Easy to understand and does problems on the board. Office hours with him are super helpful; I went almost every week and the content made sense. Cares about your understanding of the topic. 10/10 would recommend
I had physics 1221, the first part, with a different professor and it literally made me want to drop out of school. This was a total 180 from that. I felt like he actually cared about us as students, and he really tries to make things interesting. Class is really informal, and he really doesn't mind if you stop him and ask questions.
incredible guy, lectures are super engaging and hilarous, explains physics in such a way that complicated, abstract topics make clear sense
Wynveen is really a gem. Not only is he great at relaying the subject matter, but he's also very funny and personable. You can tell he loves his job and is very passionate. Also, unlike some other professors, he knows how to teach very clearly on a high level, without losing his students' attentions in high-level language/jargain.
His tests are hard/not a lot of study resources. Office hours at horrible times. For the final he's not giving us a practice final (the only thing that even remotely resembles the tests) because "people do worse" when he writes one AKA he just doesn't want to write one. Doesn't believe in technology/won't record lectures which would've helped A LOT
Wynveen is the best physics prof you could ask for! The practice quizzes are useful, and there is a ton of practice material available. The quizzes are fair, IMO. Going to office hours was very helpful for me, as he will go over any homework problem you need. He makes lectures enjoyable. Couldn't recommend anyone else more!
Aaron was a great professor, and explained material clearly during lecture. He was very willing to help students and answer questions. Best way to prepare for quizzes is to rework homework problems and do the practice quizzes. Make sure you completely understand the thought process for solving a problem. Most times, that is the most difficult part.
During the short time he substituted for another professor he was a blast. Hilarious and engaging in his teaching it was amazing the level of quality he provided each lecture. This only negative I can say about his style of teaching is that he doesn't upload supplementary slides to the canvas page for reference. Still, what a guy!
Wynveen is a hilarious teacher with a good teaching style; I wouldn't be able to comprehend with a lot of other lecturers. This class is pretty hard but his office hours are super helpful, along with the Physics tutor room being in the same hall as lectures. He can be a little patronizing sometimes, but he helps anyone who wants to learn.
Professor Wynveen gave fantastic lectures that thoroughly covered all of the necessary content without feeling dry or boring. I would highly recommend taking him if you have the chance.
This guy is amazing. Super funny and lighthearted (he often went off on a tangent about his cats). He does all his work on the whiteboard and doesn't use slides, but it is helpful to see the step by step of actually solving the problem. I unfortunately only had him for a couple weeks, as he was filling in for another professor.
Goes through relevant examples in lecture, presents info very clearly.
Wynveen was very clear on what was expected to know on quizzes. Doing the extra homework problems, practice quizzes, and going over the discussion questions were the best way to prepare for the quizzes. His lectures are fairly easy to understand and he does relevant examples to prepare you for the quizzes. Overall, great professor for physics!
The man. The myth. The legend. One of the BEST professors at the U. You need to put in work and study, like any other STEM course. He is a very genuine person and the criteria/grading are very straightforward. Lots of corny jokes during lectures!
The best physics professor I've had. He's amazing at taking complex topics and making it seem simple. HW was hard but his TA's were great at helping, and his lectures were extremely captivating. Same book as 1401V, so I got used to the format. The tests were pretty straightforward too! I'm extremely grateful to have taken his class.
I had Wynveen as my professor for physics 1 fall of freshman year and he was by far my favorite professor up until this point (I'm a sophomore). I had lecture every morning at 8 am and I was always motivated to go because of how helpful and entertaining his lectures were. The coursework is tough, but he made it much easier to comprehend.
Professor Wynveen is a very nice and funny guy, he definitely has an interesting sense of humor and was always making the class laugh. He doesn't use slides and writes everything on the board so there is no way to make up if you miss class. He teaches by running through a lot of examples, sometimes without explaining the concepts or the equations.
He's the GOAT! the best physics professor I have ever had in my life. The lectures are super fun. He's a classic guy and he never uses any slides -- he writes everything on the board and does a lot of examples, and his demos are hilarious (he does demos in all lectures). The class is hard and needs a lot of work to get good grades in the quizzes.
HE'S THE GOAT!! Best professor I have ever had in my life. His lectures are super fun. He's a classic guy and he never uses slides -- he writes everything on the board and does a lot of problems in class. The demos were hilarious and he does them every lecture. The class is hard though and requires a lot of work to get good grades.
Genuinely the most entertaining professor I've ever had and passionate about what he teaches. He's a bit fast when he teaches, but having him was a fantastic experience.
Professor Wynveen is by far my favorite professor of all time. He teaches in a way that is very understandable and engaging. Beyond just being a good professor, he is a great person and very funny in class. He respects his students and you can tell that. If you can take him, do it!
Aaron Wynveen is an amazing professor and I would highly recommend choosing him for any intro physics course. He made lectures fun with interesting demos and genuinely helped me learn the content. That being said, be warned that this course is extremely difficult and will require a large time investment.
Professor Wynveen has been one of my favorite professors. Although this course was challenging for me, he made it interesting and worthwhile. He cares for his students and wants us to succeed. He is a great lecturer for how dense physics is, and just overall a great person. I am taking him again this summer for PHYS1222. Take him if you can!
I think this may just be because I hate physics and took the summer course. Averages around 60% are normal, and he doesn't have office hours, only the TAs do. I have struggled a lot, and I had to pay hundreds extra for outside tutoring. I don't learn anything in lectures because I am scrambling to keep up writing instead of actually absorbing info.
Dr Wynveen is one of the best, funniest professors I have ever had! He makes physics easy and is such a good teacher. He does engaging demos during class - definitely take physics with him!
Wynveen is a fun, quirky professor who keeps lectures engaging with his corny jokes. While tests can be challenging, doing the practice materials and going to office hours really helps. unstuck ai is a great study tool too! Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
The guy is the best professor I have ever had when it came to physics, as made a complicated subject palatable and digestible. Chime-Ins count towards your grade, so in a way attendance is mandatory.
His office hours (2/wk) are a GOLD MINE, as are his review sessions. Go to both and you will pass his class. He is hilarious, kind, and he posts lecture notes in case you miss a class. His is the only class I've seen students wait 10+ minutes to finish lecturing. Easily my favorite professor, and made me love physics II. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Professor Wynveen turned what I expected to be a horrible class into a superbly enjoyable experience. My previous encounters with electromagnetism and the like have been awful; no longer! Prof. Wynveen is a great teacher, highly entertaining and engaging, effective at explaining topics, and clearly deeply devoted to and interested in his material.
Amazing and great professor for physics 2. The best professor I've ever had and is very fun and enjoyable to have as a lecture. Course is difficult due to it being physics 2 but this professor makes everything easy to understand. Very test heavy but also a very great curve.
Spends his lectures at the whiteboard, incredible pacing Works through USEFUL examples Stays focused on NEEDED material, no awkward tangents Asks questions mid lecture to check in if ppl are following along, great mcq practice I could say tons more, bc he's prob my fave prof so far. U can tell he's a seasoned pro
Attendance was "mandatory" in the form of daily chime-ins for grade. Lecture-wise, might be one of the best professors in the school. Clearly knows his stuff and is able to communicate those ideas to students in a very understandable way. Lots of fun tidbits and little pieces of humor sprinkled into his lectures also. 100% take him for PHYS 1302W.
I cheated myself out of an easy A by halfassing the lab and missing lectures, Wynveen is a great lecturer, if you study for the quizzes you'll do fine.
Prof. Wynveen did an amazing job of teaching a dense, complicated subject in a way that was actually digestible to his students. Lectures were required to attend, but they were extremely helpful for learning the content as he went over important examples. Wynveen is a hilarious teacher who genuinely cares about his students and their learning.
Wynveen is the BEST professor in the physics department. He is really good at introducing concepts and explaining in a way that helps us understand the physics conceptually. He is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot from him!
he makes e&m easy. he's my idol. greatest prof i've ever had and he's so good at making things make sense and being so engaging. expectations were very clear and his class averages were highest for 1302 iirc
Professor Wynveen is the only professor that could make taking PHYS 1302W bearable. Super funny and cares about his students. Its a hard class but taking his section might make you less miserable.
I couldn't imagine not having Wynveen as my professor for this class. He clearly knows what he is talking about and brings wit and humor to every lecture. The examples provided are actually relevant to the homeworks and exams. Textbook is provided but not at all necessary if you go to the lectures, which you should. Wynveen is a true g.
Wynveen my goat. Took this class spring '25 somehow made a class that's typically boring and hard, fun and a lot easier to understand. I would not have done as good if I wasn't in his class. If you can take him for physics 2 plsssss do he's awesome!!!!
Wynveen is the best professor, he is very engaging and funny.
Great professor, knew his stuff. Presented it clearly with practice problems, attendance necessary for points. Funny guy, makes it interesting.
