Not a good lecturer, not fit to teach. Posts class power points 30minutes before class begins, at least 30slides. No partial credit on exams. Does not curve exams in a good way. Questions on test are meant to trick you. She also gets irritated very quickly with the class. UTAs are not very helpful. Recitation is a waste of time but mandatory.
Not the best lecturer. She is primarily a researcher so she is not sure about how to effectively teach the material to students who don't know the material very well. Does not give partial credit on open-ended questions on exams. Read the book, her exams/power points are basically just copy/paste from the sections in the text.
Easy A but you won't learn anything. She takes five years to explain a concept that can be explained in two minutes. Puts all her slides up on CourseWeb though and her exams are straight from those, so there's no need to read the textbook. Gives "reading quizzes" but you can Google those. Inaccessible outside of class, and unwilling to help you.
Four exams and reading quizzes almost every class plus recitation worksheets are graded. Pretty easy exams. Good professor. If you read and put in the time you should be fine
This was her first semester teaching such a big lecture and overall was plenty fair. We got 20 points of extra credit and the lowest exam you take is dropped. 25% of your grade comes from super easy reading quizzes and doing recitation work which itself wasn't hard, her exams are half multiple choice half open response which I prefer.
Dr. Abagael West is a great professor. It was her first time teaching Bio 2, so we have to cut some slack. She reads off the powerpoint and have daily quizzes. There are no surprise questions on the exam, whatever you studied is what is on the exam. Very accessible outside of class and explains concepts clearly. BTW, she is paleontologist!
Dr. West is a really good option for bio 2, she is probably one of the easier bio professors. Her lectures can get a little boring, but her power point slides are amazing and so helpful for studying. 4 tests, one is dropped, and lots of small quizzes and work count towards your grade too. There is also an extra credit assignment for lots of points.
Out of all the bio 2 professors available for this past semester, Dr. West was definitely the best option. The exams she creates are not made to trick her students, and assignments are graded very fairly. If I had to take the class over again I'd definitely take it with Dr. West again! She has a great personality, and is an overall great professor.
I really loved Dr. West and her TA's were helpful creating review sessions for the test. I thought this class was fairly doable if you studied. I actually really liked her as a professor and enjoyed her sense of humor. :)
This was like her first-semester teaching at Pitt. I think she'll get better with experience. But that being said, she doesn't have the powerpoints up until 10 minutes before class and she is a little rude overall. On the other hand, she really wants everyone to pass (lots of bonus!!!!) and the tests are a breeze compared to other professors.
I retook this class as a summer course. This was my second time taking the course, just to receive a better grade. I ended up doing worse the second time taking it. Dr. West was an incredibly rude professor who was not willing to help when asked. The tests were very difficult, even covering things we never discussed, and there was no bonus.
Avoid her. She is rude in class and expects students to know absurd amounts of material for each exam. First exam average was a D. Lecture slides make little to no sense and exam question include material not even discussed in lecture.
Exams are truly astounding in the amount of information she expects you to know. Lecture material is unorganized and is not set up in a logical order that connects with previous lectures. She has ridiculous expectations for her students. Quizzes, study guides, and handouts are helpful, but still so much material to learn that there's no hope.
DO NOT TAKE VERT MORPH WITH HER!!!
NEVER take her class - she has awful expectations for her students, way too high; does not always know the information she is teaching herself, will ask the students to confirm after looking it up. WORST CLASS AND PROF EVER
I took this class in Spring 2019 but forgot to review before - She was a nice person but the class was hard! She gave us study guides & vocab to know, uploaded the lecture slides before class, frequent textbook readings (wasn't checked but helpful). I put no for if I would take her again bc I thought the class could've been less complicated/hard
one of the hardest classes I have taken... your grade is mainly made up of exams. The exams have so much material you need to know and the powerpoints are unorganized and do not flow. She expects you to know all the material which is not reasonable at all. Don't take this class.
Do not take biology 2 with her! Too much tophat and terrible lectures. Lots of work
She goes through topics so fast. There are 3 mini exams and 2 midterms and the midterms can't be dropped. Recitation was led by TA's; they were clueless. We always had to scramble till the end to finish the worksheet. Distribution of the chapters is uneven. Spends half the semester on evolution and morphology because its closer to her area of study
DO NOT take West. She doesn't even know what bio is.
Never take West. Shes a horrible teacher. I regret not dropping this class.
I felt like I knew what was going on in bio until I couldnt even finish the first exam because there was so much material. I like the idea of the open ended, but 5 points for a 2 sentence answer is kind of crazy. I also feel like I had to teach myself more than anything. Currently thinking of withdrawing to save my GPA.
Absolutely awful choice for Bio 2. She does not teach, she just reads off powerpoints that come directly from the textbook. She does not answer questions. Her exams are very unreasonable, way too long with material that we did not even learn. Save your time and your GPA
I should've looked at her website before I decided to enroll in Bio. Not only are the exams so unbelievably ridiculous and nonsensical, but she's extremely unbearable to be around in office hours and outside of class. I feel like she's teaching more for her ego than to help students understand Bio. A flowchart for a letter of rec? Really???
Dr. West is quite possibly the rudest professor I have had at Pitt. She reads from slides during lectures and gives TopHat assignments that could easily be assigned outside of class but then wastes class time having us do them. She often responds to student questions with an attitude and is not approachable at all, making snide remarks regularly.
The tests are ridiculous. Resources are not available to grasp the concepts that she wants you to know.
Ok the wall of 1.0 reviews is really inaccurate. Her midterm exams are very difficult, but she does curve exams if the average is very low. Her mini exams are super easy, easy grade boost. She can be rude during lectures and her recitation assignments can be ambiguously graded. Overall she's pretty average in difficulty for a STEM prof. Not a 1.0.
The 1.0's were after our first midterm which was actually impossible and unneccessarily hard. Still not a great professor--bad at lecturing and is rude at times, but is knowledgable so go to office hours if you're confused. The mini-exams were easy and she uses tophat a lot.
We are currently taking this class online without any zoom/material to help us besides slides. Even when we had lecture, they were awful & I always left confused. Recitations are random, verbose case studies & do not help you. Exams are unbelievably long & confusing & you can't finish. Extremely unpleasant. 2 months to grade exams. Worst experience
I highly recommend you choose another prof. especially if you had Zapanta for Bio 1 and liked her style. Wests test questions are extremely vague and often on info we didnt review. So many case studies and recitations that were impossible to complete in the given amount of time. Really condescending to students and inflexible.
worst teacher I've ever had. incredibly rude to her students. lectures don't make sense and don't help you learn and tests are extremely hard and long with case studies that you don't have enough background in to understand. she was bad before we switched online and now she doesn't even post lectures and ignores questions. take any other professor
We're now online and West has stopped teaching altogether. Our usual class time is not used for lecturing nor does she even post her lecturing for us to watch at any time. We rely solely on the textbook and her extremely vague lecture printouts. The recitations have somehow gotten harder and she doesn't answer questions or communicate effectively.
The previous ratings for West are way too harsh. I do agree with the comments that she is passive-aggressive in nature in person, however, she does genuinely care about every student. Exams are very difficult and the recitations are really challenging. However, she does curve and she listens to her students when they voice how hard the exams are.
Dr. West gives really hard tests that are a bit lengthy and recitations are also pretty long and TAs don't really understand what is going on but this is only her second semester teaching and she is still figuring things out. She's not the worst teacher out there and I have respect for her. You just have to work hard to do well in her class.
I will do this in the most respectful way possible. Dr. West has been the worst professor I've gotten at my time at the University of Pittsburgh. She clearly only cares about her research and not her students. She will not mention lab-related things during lecture, yet put 30 points worth of open-ended interpreting random lab protocol. Rip your GPA
Dr. West is very mean and aggressive to students who ask for help. She does not want to see students succeed and sees teaching as an obligation. Her exams are unfair and she stopped posting lectures. Dont take her
What. a. gem. She's the sweetest lady you'll ever meet! Hands down the best bio professor on the east coast.
Being a part of the online class, this woman was a gem. She gave the final to us with the first question 70% of our grade saying, "tell your friends, family, and pets you love them!" However, the first half of the semester in school was rough. The average on her exam/mini was about an 80. If it wasn't for the online, Idk if I would've gotten an A.
I waited to rate because I wanted to see if her first midterm (v hard) was representative of the class-it wasn't. I think she overestimated how much we could do, and probably won't do it again. She made the online transition very easy. Seems like a nice person, a little awkward (not the best with people so she can seem rude). Study, you'll be fine.
Id avoid this professor. Her class was not very fair and she was not accesible. Unclear exams and not helpful
These reviews reflect earlier in the sem after a rough first midterm where she overestimated our abilities/exam time. But she recognized this and allowed us to regain points on the exam. In remote learning, she allowed ample time on exams and was v understanding. Use textbook for help & know the specific examples from the lectures and it'll be ok
Once we went online, Dr. West was extremely helpful and friendly with not only her exams but also how she treated students. When we were in person, she's definitely a really tough professor. Lectures are mostly confusing and hard to keep up with. Exams are really difficult. If you are not a "bio person", I would not recommend taking Dr. West.
The first half of the semester was definitely far more difficult but once the class went online the class became so much easier and Dr. West was really looking out for out best interests. The weekly recitation can be tough sometimes but other than that the exams and material second half of the year was a breeze. I would recommend taking her!
If you're okay with inhaling a bio textbook, a good (and fast) test-taker, and a fast note-taker, she's probably your best choice as an instructor. Her tests are pretty difficult if you don't know the material well (i.e. memorize case studies/model systems). I got an A because I quickly figured out she would be little help to me during lecture
Before remote learning her class was frustrating because of the format/lack of new information from lectures. reading the textbook helped a lot, tophat and problem sets were easy grades, just midterms that you need to worry about because it was hard to tell what would be asked. our final exam became an essay which was nice and def helped my grade
Dr. West is the best choice out of the very bad choices for Bio 2 at Pitt. Her lectures are only loosely related to the textbook, but if you pay attention in class, the tests are not that difficult. She is truly a very caring professor, but is not the most pleasant person you will meet. The content of Bio 2 is pretty easy, so an A is attainable.
One of the worst professors I have taken so far. So unorganized and makes many mistakes in grading. Class was promised a curve by her a few days before the end of the term which we did not get. Grade distribution did not seem fair. I would avoid her for bio 2 and save yourself some stress.
Lectures aren't very useful, she puts you into groups to actually learn the material. Exams consist of 30% random very specific things that you won't remember. She makes a lot of grading mistakes.
Unbelievably disorganized with unclear test material. The class does little to prepare students for tests, which are often full of improper or obscure terminology that leave the student feeling helpless as no amount of studying or mastery of the course material can prepare you for her original, uniquely awful, error-ridden test material. AVOID.
Her PowerPoints are so unclear and unhelpful. I would avoid her and her class so much. Taking abagael west is a huge mistake because she puts no effort into teaching
Dr. West was such a good professor. I don't understand why she has such negative reviews. Her lecture slides are really clear and her tests are so easy! They're pretty much based right off of the slides. As long as you review the slides (attending class is helpful too), the tests will not be tricky at all.
West was a really tough grader, and I absolutely hated the first two weeks of their class. But as long as you read the textbook and actually pay attention in lecture, you'll do fine. They're one of the only professors I've had who takes the mental health of students into account. Not an easy A, but ended up being one of my favorite professors.
Dr. West is very passionate about the material and enjoys teaching it. The only reason I gave the level of difficulty a 3 is because I took this class during the first semester of all virtual content and we were graded on a limited number of assignments and assignment types. We definitely had to get the hang of doing well on those assignments.
My biggest issue with Dr West is the grading. If you get 100% on the learning curve homework and recitation activities (which is 2/3 of the stuff we do in class) but you have a 75% average for the quizzes (which are not easy), then you automatically get a C in this class. It makes absolutely no sense at all.
Professor West determined our final grade in probably the worst and least thought out system imaginable. If you turn in every single homework assignment on time, and do every single recitation assignment perfectly, you also have to have above an 90% average on quizzes to get an A. If your quiz average is an 89%, you just earned a B overall.
This class is very disorganized. There are textbook readings you need to do, but the quiz has nothing to do with the textbook. The quizzes are made so that once you submit an answer, you can't go back to it. If you email them, don't expect a response back. I strongly recommend another professor for bio. Enter at your own risk.
Exams are filled with typos, errors, and mistakes. The grading scale is VERY unreasonable and designed so students fail/perform very poorly. Not accessible or helpful in or outside of lecture. It seems as if Dr. West really does not want to teach this course.
The tests are unpredictable but I think most of these reviews are unfair. West's class time is more like office hours, talking through examples. If that's not your style try to take with a different professor. Pretty receptive to class feedback. Read the book, do the Learning Curves, and do the extra practice for modules and you'll be ok.
I had Dr. West for evolution. Didn't answer emails and not the best at answering questions, but quizzes were very fair and covered exactly what we learned in class. Class time was spent going over power points and doing group assignments, which were a pretty decent portion of our grade. A pretty solid choice for BIOSC1130 in my opinion...
Not accessible at all if you have an issue (which you will have due to west's extremely disorganized style). Does not hold office hours and they will never answer your emails.
you gotta read tons of text books all by yourself. very little things discussed in lecture. you also have to do all the HW on your own. I'd say this professor give literary no help to you in this course, never reply emails. Totally unreasonable grading scale.
I think they had a hard time with online teaching, but they were very nice when you spoke to them one on one and really listened to students feedback when it came to quizzes. They also gave a good amount of extra credit!! The grading system isn't great, but if you work hard you can do well. A lot of textbook reading.
Textbook is absolutely required, and there is a lot of reading. Lectures are discussion-based on more abstract concepts, so it can be hard to follow along at times. Quizzes are very fair, but studying for them can be stressful not knowing exactly what they could cover. Manageable A as long as sincere work is put in to regular note taking.
Semester started a little rocky, but they listen to feedback and make adjustments accordingly. Quizzes are generally fair given textbook readings and lecture material. More than willing to take extra time to cover confusing topics.
Class material not difficult but grading system was completely unreasonable; only takes the LOWEST grade out of quizzes, recitations and Learning Curves. Very unorganized class, never knew what on quizzes and they were full of errors. Never accessible outside of class, does not answer emails, doesn't seem to care about students at all.
lecture time was office hours (not mandatory) and course was taught via posted lecture videos/slides and textbook. Sometimes vague ab what material will be on the exams, esp bc the book is more in depth than her videos. unorganized structure but the 4 exams werent bad. Work is at your own pace. Weird grading system but shes receptive to feedback.
If you'r looking for a professor who will respond to what you send, Dr. West is not the person for you. Communication was lacking & grading rubric is terrible. Missing few recitations or homeworks will get you a C in the class even if your quiz average is an A. & lecture time was "office hours" and NOT mandatory, but if you don't go you miss things
West was okay. There was a lot more work since the class was virtual and we had to attend lectures and watch asynchronous videos outside of lecture time. Dr. West's grading scheme was a little weird and I wasn't the biggest fan of it but if you work hard, you can definitely get your desired grade. Quizzes were difficult.
Professor West really knows their stuff. However, I would not advise taking this class due to the way they grade. Quizzes were quite tough, but a good grade is achievable if you bust your butt.
Dr. West's grading system was strange at best. It is based on benchmarks and completion, except for quizzes which are averaged. Their lectures were really office hours and you were expected to read the textbook and watch the lecture videos prior to attending. They were unreachable outside of class and had a rude attitude when talking to students.
West has a different grading scale where its split up into quizzes, HWs, and recitations where letter grade is determined by the lowest of the 3 averages. But, the final only accounts for a +- to your grade. Overall, West was pretty unenthusiastic about everything except Evolution. Very understanding and gave lots of bonus though.
A average on exams but got a B because her grading system was made by a disabled toddler who's never taken a college class.
If you skip class, you won't do well as most of the test examples are ones they go over in class. Weird grading system but if you're genuinely trying to do well then you'll end up doing HW/recitation anyways so it shouldn't impact your grade. Tests can be vague/confusing but they listen to class feedback and it's not impossible to do well.
By far worst professor ive had at pitt. Unclear grading criteria, treats class time like office hours. The textbook is your best friend, quizzes were easy if you took good notes. Recitation attendance is mandatory but tbh a waste of time. An 80 and 89 quiz avg are both a B. Learning curves & recitation assignments are for completion.
This class was difficult and unorganized. Make sure you do the Learning Curves and check your recitation answers with a UTA before submitting. Study hard for quizzes (not open note). There were issues with grading, a lot of reading, and Dr. West was confusing when answering questions. However, there was extra credit at the end, which helped a lot.
It appears as if she has no interest in teaching. Awful choice for biology. I would not recommend
I don't understand all the bad reviews that Professor West is getting. Mostly all of her tests are based off the textbook and lectures. She is also very considerate with the grading and helped everyone out at the end of the year by dropping a quiz and a few recitations! If you stay on top of everything then you will surely be fine.
Disappointing experience. Office hours is not a fun experience, never go as you are treated so poorly. Lectures are almost impossible to follow. Tests are vague and confusing even if you know the material.
West is passionate about class and the lectures can be fun, but you shouldn't take this class without biology experience/interest. Majority of grades come from quizzes where you are expected to memorize multiple scientific taxa and anatomy. Even with generous regrades, you need to spend hours memorizing every word on the slides.
This class literally took up all my time this semester with studying for quizzes every week in lecture and lab. It's interesting, but very difficult since there is so much material. Make sure you take a A&P class and have a strong paleo/evolution background before taking this class, or you won't pass.
Dr. West is probably one of the better bio professors that I have taken. I took it online and they were using the benchmark grading format which I was not personally a fan of. Nevertheless their lectures are not boring and they will always answer your questions, just be sure to really pay attention because most of the exam material is in it
Dr West has been the best biology professor I have had thus far. She genuinely cares for your grade and wants the best overall for you. Grading is clear and clean-cut and she weighs in on class discussion regarding grades. She focuses more on learning the information. Quizzes are text-book based and difficult but she is easily reachable and helpful
I highly recommend Dr. West for bio 2. Dr. west is an amazing lecturer and a genius on every topic that is covered. It is very easy to do well in class, quizzes are worth less than participation so if you have test anxiety it is still very easy to do well as long as you attend lecture and do well in recitation.
Overall Dr. West is mediocre. They lectured in a constant monotone voice. Nobody really knew what was going on in the class and people would fall asleep. I spent the majority of time teaching myself the content. The "quizzes" (each had like 75 questions so really more of a test), were extremely difficult and didn't really test your understanding.
Dr. West is not the best professor I've had but also not the worst. Her lectures are very long and packed with information but in order to do well on the exams, you also have to read the textbook outside of class. Exams are only 30% of our grade though and we drop our lowest. Basically, if you show up to class and pay attention you will pass.
Quiz questions are sometimes unclear, but if you read the textbook, go to lecture, and know your vocab really well the course should be a breeze. Reading the book is really important bc they don't teach everythingthat's on the quiz in lecture. Also students really need to learn how to use the correct pronouns smh it's really disrespectful
Didn't make a syllabus, unfair and vague test questions that contradict what was taught in class, they are passive aggressive during lecture, never once gave a clear answer to a question, Recitation assignments were worth as much of final grade as quizzes and were extremely difficult/weren't related to class content. Very unorganized class overall.
I had them for bio 2 and it was awful. Their tests are so confusing and even if you studied, it felt like they set you up to fail. It's 4 quiz, which are basically big exams because its like 50-60 questions. There is little you can earn points from. If you fail the quizzes, you're done. Read the book and skip lecture. Find a different professor.
Dr. West is a very caring professor and wants all their students to do well. With that being said, their tests are HARD and very much application based. It is a very doable class, but you will need to put in the work to get the grade you want. Read the textbook, and go to UTA office hours with any questions.
Dr. West is an amazing option for Bio 2! They let us choose how much assignments, quizzes, recitations, etc. should be weighted in class. Lectures are boring and you to have read the textbook ahead of class to succeed. You get to drop lowest homework grades and 2 recitations, and one exam. Not many decent profs for Bio 2, but West is a good option!
As long as you do the homework and recitation on time and go to class for lecture participation, you'll be fine. Grading is not test heavy, 30% for quizzes, 10% for the final and everything else was completion of homework and recitation. Got an A in the class with my average on quizzes being an 81.
The best thing was that we got to pick the weighting for each section of the class. For example, our quizzes were only worth 30% of our grade and the final was worth 10%. You can manage to get an A even if you do not score high on the exams. As long as you do all of the extra work, you will not fail or struggle in this class.
dr. west was a great professor! they are a fair grader, you get to drop a lot of grades, which made the class less stressful. quiz questions had confusing wording sometimes. they also expect you to read, not everything is taught in-depth in lecture. still i think dr. west is probably the best prof for bio 2!! so caring for their students
She would not respond to emails and expects students to contact TA's about any questions. The lectures were not very good, she would leave material out that she thought was important but it was not everything we needed to know for the test, her tests are very long, questions on the test are usually difficult, and she was a little uptight.
Not a horrible class overall. Dr. West is very educated, but extremely rude and hard to get in contact with. Their material is very vague, but test questions are extremely specific. Weighting of final and quizzes does affect a ton of your final grade, so that was beneficial. It is very confusing in structure but take if you just need to pass.
Dr. West's lecture's can be very boring. At the beginning of the semester the class chose how to weigh the exams and final, which is the only reason I passed. There was usually missing info from the powerpoints, and the lecture slides weren't available until after I would need them.
West is much more passionate about evolution, and that shows in the Vertebrate Morphology course. West's lectures are interesting, informative, and tie together the subject material in a logical way - the class is very well-paced. The exams are biweekly, tough, and memorization heavy, but West offers plenty of extra credit test corrections.
Dr. West is by far the best choice for bio 2. Their lectures can be boring, but if you read the textbook, you'll be fine. The lowest test score is dropped and they provide plenty of other points through homework, recitation, attendance, etc. The tests are challenging, but not totally awful. They are very respectful and care about their students.
Very caring professor whose class I never really had to worry about. Interesting lectures and obviously has a passion for the subject. Recitations were a little annoying but were fine in the end.
Lectures are slow and boring. Don't need to be present in class to understand material but attendance points are given. Tests are super hard, very specific, and longer than needed. Good for people who memorize things easily.
Dr West was pretty condescending during lecture and hard to access outside of class. Exams were hard and unnecessarily long. No practice questions, no idea what to expect for exam questions. They made up for the challenging exams with a fair grading system. Recitations/participation worth same as exams which balanced out low exam scores.
West let us set up the weight of assignments so 4 quizzes (1 can be dropped) & final were only worth 10% for the class. Check with a UTA for correct answers on recitation assignments. As long as you study and utilize the textbook, learning curve homework, and lectures, quizzes were not bad at all. Homework is impossible to not get a 100 on.
Dr. West really knows bio, and I learned so much from their lectures. Tests were kind of tricky with ambiguous wording etc. but after students gave feedback, they really made an effort to make tests more manageable.
I wish I never took her class. She was not approachable and the tests were riddled with mistakes. I would highly recommend you choose a different prof. Doesnt answer emails
Very helpful slides and lecture notes. Grading is mostly fair. The exams are very long, with some being 70 questions and this makes up most of your grade. Homework is good practice and as long as you do it, helps your grade. Overall good professor but be ready for tough exams.
Dr. West is one of the most caring/coolest professors I've had at Pitt. They actually knew most of their student's names! With that being said, they do expect a lot and can assign a lot of work, specifically within the lab section of this course. The tests were very fair, albeit more short response intensive than I initially anticipated.
Dr West is actually not that bad so far. They are good at explaining concepts during lecture and the diagrams that they draw help a lot. The grading is very fair since everything is equally weighted. Check with UTA for correct answers on recitation assignments.
I think the negative reviews about West are unfair. Contrary to what other people say they did give enough time to study for the midterm exam even though it was the first class after break. You just had to study over break and the midterm was very fair. They do give answers to homework and go to office hours, theirs or UTAs, for answers to quizzes.
Abagael's shouldn't get as much hate as they do. Yes, the lectures can be boring and redundant, but I feel like I've learned a lot from them as they do explain concepts well. Grading scale is AWESOME (20% HW, 20% recitation assignments, 20% weekly quizzes, 20% midterm (theres only 1), and 20% final). Midterm and weekly quiz questions were fair.
(they/them) One of the nicest and funniest professors I have this semester! Lectures are a bit hard to follow, but they like to interact with their students during lecture and are very personable. Grading scale: 20% Homework for completion, 20% Recitation assignments, 20% Check-ins/quizzes, 20% 1 Midterm, 20% final. Love the mullet too!
West is one of the best professors that I have had for biology. They are caring for their students and are funny during lecture. There are two major exams: 1 midterm and 1 final that make up 40% of your grade for the class combined.
Pros of taking West: passionate about the material, quizzes are easy and straightforward, fun recitation assignments, only 40% of your grade is exams, hilarious and sweet. Cons of taking West: hard to follow during lecture, gets distracted easily, annoying voice. Overall I am in the middle about West but I don't believe they deserve any slander.
I loved Dr. West! I don't why they're rated so low, because lectures were always very clear and engaging. The grading scale is amazing, and as long as you show up to class and recitation, it really isn't that difficult to get a good grade. You don't usually need to read the textbook unless the chapter is tricky, then it can help
West is a very accommodating professor especially given the events that have occurred throughout the past few weeks. I really appreciate this and I can tell that they care about their students.
Honestly baffled at all of the negative reviews on here. Dr. West has been the kindest and most considerate professor I have ever had. Always approachable and willing to help. Awesome grading scale and amazing lectures. Would 100% recommend.
I honestly didn't mind Dr. West. I think she genuinely cares about her students and is available to them outside of class. I think only having a midterm and a final is a little unfair since she used to give more exams to help students in the past. I think if there were more chances to get a better exam grade it would be fine. Just read the textbook
They were an okay professor. They provided slides for their lectures, but they sometimes were out of order and you needed to add a decent amount of notes to them. Their tests were okay.
I think Dr. West is a good choice for Bio 2. The weighting of assignments was fair and so was the weighting of the quizzes/exams. I enjoyed their lectures, you definitely have to pay attention and take good notes on the slides. Also, they were very caring for their students' mental health. They did not show us correct answers for quizzes tho.
West is one of the best professors for bio 2. There aren't many good options for bio 2 but West is one of the best. Ended up being one of my favorite professors this semester. Emphasizes the mental health of their students and is a very caring professor. The tests were very fair and covered exactly what was covered in lectures.
Their grading system saved me. 20% for 5 things: weekly quizzes, recitation, hw, 1 midterm, final. Hw is impossible not to get 100% on unless you miss deadlines. Assessments were tough but all tested material was available in their slides/textbook. Hard to access via email but were really nice/accommodating for extenuating circumstances in person.
Thought this class was very straightforward. Unlike a lot of typical pre med courses, this did not feel like a weed out course. The weighting of their class is clutch. As long as you study for weekly quizzes, do the HW, and recitation you will be fine. Their exams are relatively difficult, but make sure you look at old quizzes and you'll be fine.
The grades are divided pretty evenly amongst homework (guaranteed 100%), recitation activities (should be close to 100%), and the exams. The exams are annoying but overall not that bad if you attend lecture. Would take again.
i liked this class, the grading was extremely fair along with the quizzes and exams. if you went through the powerpoint slides and did reading, you knew everything when it was tested. dr west was so fair and caring throughout the semester, and was especially accommodating during the numerous negative events that occured. overall would reccomend
West is a fantastic professor that ensures you understand the material instead of just memorization. West's lectures (more specifically the hand-made drawings) allowed me to truly understand complex concepts like DNA replication and mRNA splicing. Moreover, the grading system is completely balanced ensuring you a good grade if you do homework.
Based entirely on memorization. You MUST attend class. Completely flipped classroom. You get to do rewrites for your exams to earn back 1/2 the points lost. Case studies are graded inconsistently, write clearly in your own words. One of the toughest classes I have taken here. Pay attention to diagrams on slides. Don't waste your time on textbook
DO NOT TAKE VERTEBRATE MORPHOLOGY. you will spend hours memorizing useless information. Lied to us and told us that we would all do well on the take home exam but everyone I talked to got 70's or worse. They literally do not teach, they expect you to show up to class having already learned that lecture. Don't do this to yourself.
Dr. West is a solid choice for bio 2. There is "free points" worked into their grading system which is really helpful; basically there's 350 points but it's only graded out of 335. The exams can be hard but they are multiple choice which helps. Homework takes me long to do, but is basically on completion. Overall a pretty good choice.
West in summary: Ignored students sitting with their hands raised right in front of them Lecture slides=regurgitations of textbook Refused to post slides before class/went super fast Homework=time blackhole Refused access to past exams, impossible to improve SO rude to students+no respect Made my fav subject bio, garbage Waste of tuition money :P
Dr. West was genuinely one of the worst professors I've had at Pitt. Their lectures were useless and they were constantly yelling at students, even cursing at them on occasion. Recitation worksheets were very unhelpful. Their tests weren't too bad though. Three exams and final and gives in-class participation for tophat. Would not ever take again.
mandatory lectures (3-4 tophat questions), very fast paced, and slides are content heavy. 3 exams, 1 final. can't see what you got wrong on exams. homework is easy and some questions are on the exam. dr west doesn't offer study guides/review sessions unless the utas do. apparently they don't help the utas prepare for the study sessions either.
Tbh the best bio 2 prof out of the options. I do not regret choosing them but you will be thrown off at how unapproachable they can seem. Despite their fast-paced lectures, they are a good lecturer and if you do miss anything they say, you can rewatch the lectures!! They post the lectures and PowerPoints(Slides after lecture). Choose west!
They are a great teacher for bio 2. Very straightforward class as long as you read the textbook and go to lectures. Exams are not hard as long as you study decently.
I loved dr. west as a professor! it's very clear that they care a lot about the students. exams were very straightforward and the grading scale is very logical and helpful. the uta's were also very good at helping out in recitation (loved the activities dr. west gave us!) and study sessions. would definitely take dr. west for another class.
Dr. West graded fairly and exam questions were very straightforward. They used lots of visual examples/explanations and gave "participation points" for being in class. Dr. West didn't allow students to look at their exams, which made it hard to study for the final. They advocated for students learning, but were sometimes a bit too temperamental.
Dr. West is a good choice for Bio 2. The weekly homework was the textbook chapter + the practice set which all helps. Their lectures were engaging and used good examples to aid learning. They seemed a bit unapproachable at times, but overall, they're a caring professor, and the exams were straightforward. Recitation worksheets were also beneficial.
Do NOT take Dr. West. The exams are easy, and the lectures are fine, but you can never see your exams, there are many mistakes on the exams (especially the final), and there's a lot of unnecessary busy work. They scream at students during class, are not understanding of personal issues, are unapproachable, and do not respect their students.
meh. best bio 2 prof out of the worst. v clear grading criteria, so you knew exactly what to get for an A. use the learning curve assignments, summative quizzes, and recitation worksheets to study for tests. didn't let us see what we got wrong on exams, which was annoying. pay attention to lectures + read the textbook and you'll do fine.
They explain difficult concept well, their handwritten notes are very helpful. Their exams are not too bad (4 exams including the final, no drops) Do the achieve and go over recitation worksheets to help you with the exams.
The worst bio professor I have had. She did not answer any emails and lectures were very insufficient. Exams had some many mistakes. Very impersonable. Wish I took another professor.
Inaccessible outside of class, rude, can't see old exams, and never replies to emails. However, exams are straightforward, HW is tedious but guaranteed 100%. You will learn a lot and it's easy to do well in the class. Not my favorite but significantly better than the other bio 2 profs. Use UTA study guides & review sessions to your advantage.
They are a good professor, entertaining lectures that were recorded and had credit for coming to class. We had reading quizzes and adaptive quizzes where some questions appeared on the exams. Exams were straightforward for the most part but some of the exam questions were unnecessarily hard. Overall, net positive experience.
I really liked Dr West and am very glad I took them for bio 2 over the other profs. They have a forgiving grading scale- you can lose points and still get 100%. Exams were straight forward- prepped with homework questions and notes from their lecture and was always very prepared. Liked their lectures- incorporated applications of content.
took this class spring 2023 and Dr. West was fantastic. exams were 40% of the grade (+ curved), mainly it was weekly quizzes. but you take each quiz twice, 1st on your own and 2nd collaborative, your final grade is the avg of these two scores. some questions can be a bit iffy but just look over the homework and textbook and you'll be fine.
I really regret taking West for Bio 2. Right now I am so unprepared for genetics AND ecology because of this class. I didn't learn a lot so I'm behind and West was really unclear the whole semester. Inaccessible out of class. Worst bio professor I have had.
They were an ok professor, wish I took another. Their exams (4 exams) and homework (due every week) were fairly simple and I had an A- going into the final. They made the final so difficult I finished a whole letter grade below what I was on track to doing. They are also very passive aggressive during lecture, I would try to avoid if possible.
There is > 30 min of work as homework everyday and there is no teaching done during lecture even though it is mandatory to attend. I honestly feel like I have learned absolutely nothing and the semester is more than half way over. I wasted my money taking this course because the professor doesn't even do their job. The professor is very unhelpful.
Dr. West's lectures are engaging and cover content well. Exams can be tricky, but using the textbook, homework, and resources like unstuck ai helps a lot. The class is manageable with consistent effort.
Professor West was nice ish to students, it kind of depended on the day. They could definitely come across as passive agressive. There were many mistakes on the tests, and the final in particular had many. The tests were hardish, but the in class things were so easy it was laughable. Lowkey acted like we were middle schoolers or something.
DO NOT TAKE VERTEBRATE MORPHOLOGY. horrible teacher for this class. completely flipped class and puts nothing important from class on the exams. horrible exam format, multiple choice can be multiple answers and you must get them all right. always something small not mentioned in class thats highlighted on exams. 0/10 hate this class so much.
I would highly recommend staying away from this class if you value any of the following: your time, your grades, your life, your sanity, your overall wellbeing. Classic example of a teacher who thinks their super-niche class is the biggest thing in your life, but this is the first teacher like that I've seen who seems to have 0 motivation to teach.
Worst class I have ever taken at Pitt. Dr. West is incredibly derogatory. The exams are all insanely difficult and hyper-specific, testing on one small diagram in the corner of one lecture slide from one lecture (each is 30-40 slides long). Study guides are useless, TAs unhelpful, gradings inconsistent & with no feedback. Save yourself, stay away!!
She was pretty cruel to me and unwilling to work with me when I had an illness emerge in the middle of the semester. The disability center wasn't very kind either.
No curve, no extra credit, no drops. She doesn't share her notes before lecture and doesn't let you see your test after they're graded, not to mention she's rude and has the patience of a DMV clerk during closing hours. It seems like she does not want you to succeed. Do not pick this teacher, if you do, you will not be ready for the mcat
They change the keys AFTER you get the score back so people lose/gain around 10% randomly. They will also never allow you under any circumstances to go over your exam even if you try to do so in their office. Their syllabus is never the same any semester. Some years exams easy this year not easy. Select all that apply no partial credit. RUDE AVOID!
If hell was a professor it would be Dr. West. There is no curve, no drops, no extra credit, or partial credit. They skip over topics during lecture but still test you on them because they "expect you to know it through the textbook." Will not answer emails. They don't allow you to look over the exam to see which problems you got wrong. Horrible.
Terrible, worst professor ever taken. Took off points because she feels like it
Worst professor in pitt. She doesnt give any extra credit and took points off my exam for no reason
Nothing needs to be said
Do not take her. She takes off points whenever she feels like it
Shes very rude and doesnt want u to succeed. No extra credit. No drops. No curve. She takes off points after assignments are submitted
If you enjoy your sanity, DO NOT TAKE HER
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. She changes grades after she put them in!! What kind of teacher does that??
She has no idea what she's talking about in class. Gets content wrong. Her TA's don't even know the course. Worst teacher in pitt
She doesn't even give you the lecture slides because she thinks you're "stealing" her study method, which makes no sense. Her tests content seem to have no limit. She could ask you about NASA's latest spacecraft. Absolutely horrendous teacher
Wonderful professor! She is kind to everyone, and allows us to ask any questions possible. People who struggle in this class are the ones who aren't learning the right way, which is concerning because she places all of her resources to our availability and it is more than enough. Great professor to have by your side, and is there for you whenever.
For your sake, avoid Dr. West. All of the reviews accurately reflect their course. Dr. West doesn't cover all textbook content in class, but will test you on everything. They don't allow students to see past exams, so it's tough to improve with nothing to learn from. They are hard to reach outside the classroom and very condescending.
5 exams, no drops, and no way to seeing where you screwed up. They say they have a reason to why they do everything in this course, but to not have a way to check where you screwed up in the exam, not even for a 40 minute period, has to be the dumbest thing ever. imagine not going to med school because u didnt know the evolution of plants.
Gives no feedback on exams. No exam drops. Exam questions make no sense. Do not take.
Dr. West is not as bad as many of the reviews make them seem. I honestly learned a lot through their lectures, however the exams definitely did not reflect that very well. There was no way of knowing what you got wrong/what to improve on which was frustrating. Overall, exams felt straightforward, but I always did worse than I thought I had done.
terrible, nothing else need to be said
I must say, it is one of the best classes I have taken. I do think she prepares you well for the MCAT with the appropriate content and reasonable exams. If you study, you will do absolutely fine. She is definitely the teacher to take for Bio 2 out of all of them. Wonderful professor and she cares about her students as well welcoming any students!
I loved this professor!! She is really good at teaching and her exams are not hard at all. Out of all of my friends, in the end it seems like she has the highest passing rate out of all of the Bio 2 Teachers. She explains the concepts well and provides all of the resources for your to thrive and successfully pass the class! Very kind and smart!
Dr. West is not bad at all. It seems like the reviews are bad but personally I am a hard learner and her class was perfect for me. She gives enough content for us to study before our tests and class is manageable. I think she is the best professor for Bio 2 because I have heard bad things about other teach which makes me grateful to have Dr. West.
Genuinely the most frustrating class I have taken at Pitt. Doesn't show exams even though there's a cumulative final, randomly changed some midterm grades, makes exams 10x harder than practice problems, and doesn't give us lecture slides in advance. Overall, they do not take students' learning methods into account and only thinks for themself.
Awful, awful, awful. Exams are difficult and they don't allow students to see what they got wrong (even though there's a cumulative final). Lecture slides/recordings are posted after lecture. Lectures cover what they say are most "interesting" things, not what'll be on exams. READ TEXTBOOK! Passable, but hard to get an A or high B. Seriously, AVOID
Most unprofessional, dismissive, and rude professor I have ever had. I didn't feel like I learned even though this is a Pitt bio class. Unprepared for future genetics class
This is the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. Extremely rude, condescending, and dismissive. Tests are difficult but the real issue is the "select all" questions with no partial credit. You cannot get any feedback on your tests. Additionally, this professor will randomly change your grades with no explanation.
There is no extra credit, exam drops, or partial credit; select all multiple-choice answers. They are very condescending when students struggle and ask questions and cannot fathom why their test grades are low. They are very hard to contact outside class hours, and do not respond to emails. Do not take it if you want to continue to enjoy biology.
I feel like I understand the material, but then the tests come. I spent lots of time studying and putting the work in. However exams are very difficult with many select all questions(no partial credit), and seem purposefully tricky. A lot of the kids who seemed to be doing well are the pre-med, who have a snarky attitude about the class.
do not take this class SAVE YOUR SANITY. handwritten hw due every class, classwork in class but thats not bad, but the quizzes are impossible. dont.
Really good lectures and reading assignments were fine but the 3 quizzes and the final were extremely hard, even though we get retakes for half credit on what we got wrong I didn't get more then a 80 in any of them
Some people do not like this professor, but personally i felt the class was very manageable and well taught. Exam topics are all taught in class and reviewed in recitation. You don't get any drops, but the exams are very straightforward, including the finals. Also provided learning goals for each lecture that really showed up on the exams.
Lectures were dense, and since slides weren't posted beforehand, it was hard to follow along and take effective notes. After exams, we weren't shown what we got wrong, even though there was a cumulative final, which made it tough to improve. Even though I studied almost every day, the exams were still very challenging and unfair.
u can't look at ur exams after u take them not even in office hours? they don't respond to their emails? so many assignments with no late credit? missing even a few assignments sets u back insanely? all midterm questions are from the Achieve question bank. they didnt even give me my final score so lol.
Bio 2 has been absolutely horrific, no doubt in part due to Dr. West but I fear for some universal karmic retribution that will strike me down if I am not forgiving in my rating as I still achieved an A in this class. If you find yourself in the halls of L9 Clapp, may the stars be aligned for you as they were for me, and please let them be kind.
They will not respond to any emails, avoid questions during lecture, and won't let students see exam scores under any circumstances. The class is not hard because of the content, but rather because they cannot proctor an exam or deviate from teaching off slides. Exams aren't written well, and their final is a mandatory, cumulative exam.
I felt like I knew the content but when I got to the exam I felt like I knew nothing. I spent a week studying for every exam and two for the final and it didn't even matter. You can't see what you got wrong and the style of question changed every exam. I found that this professor was rude to students and didn't answer questions in lecture
Take anyone but them. Cannot see exams whatsoever. Mandatory weekly readings but says it's not necessary to know info from the book for exams but that is false. Each exam was a different style so you cannot learn how to prepare for their exams. Teaches as if the content is easy but tests difficult. Seemed rude and didn't answer questions in class.
Dr. West is honestly not that bad. If you pay attention and take notes during lecture, read through the textbook, and study, you are guaranteed a good grade. Dr. West also responds to their emails and is available during office hours if anyone needs any help. However, I hated that we couldn't see our exams, or there were no drops for exams.
They were good teaching wise but I just didn't like the structure of the class. There is a lot of HW which are good buffer points. Final is NOT optional, no drops, and you can't see your exams. Recitation materials were tested on the exams. But, some questions on exams came exactly from the HW. Their office hours were helpful.
I don't recommend West due to her grading system (can't see exams, no drops, no clear feedback). The class itself wasn't bad at all as long as you study by going over the lectures and practice problems. Exams were a little tricky with select all that apply problems, but overall do-able. She was unaccessible and unaccommodating outside of class.
Dr. West is okay at lecturing but their exams are pretty difficult. I left every exam thinking I did pretty good but I ended up getting Bs consecutively. They don't let you see your exams afterwards, which makes it difficult to improve. I would not take them again and I would avoid if possible.
Better than most other Bio profs. Lectures are very engaging however, slides are not posted until AFTER lecture. Exams are harder than they need to be especially for the ecology and evolution sections as that is Dr. West's specialty and you do not get the exams back to see what you missed. Difficult, but to be expected for a STEM class. 8/10
Dr. West is a good lecturer, and explains the topics well. However, exams felt harder compared to the content we learned (ambiguous qst.), and because we didn't receive our exams back it was impossible to tell what I had gotten wrong. Dr. West does care about student success, but was sometimes condescending during lecture. Welcoming at office hours
She is simply rude. Straight up rude. Never answered emails and was not helpful with questions. Exams were full of mistakes and refused questions at points. Lectures were sporadic and confusing. The worst professor I have had in biology
The worse lecturer in the bio department. Slides are all over the place and filled with mistakes. Unapproachable for questions. Rude because she ignores emails.
Grading was interesting considering I got an A despite doing poorly on a lot of exams. Did not get to see tests which was annoying because some previous test questions from midterms were on the final. Exams harder than practice/tophat questions. Slides aren't posted until after lecture which is terrible. High key have to teach yourself most of it.
If you are stressing over taking their class, do not. The class set up allows mistakes. I do not think this class was nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Although there are no drops for exams, content is fair. As long as you study lecture material and summative quiz questions you are good. Be prepared for application based questions.
No, just no
West is an interesting prof. They are decent in lecture, give you so many resources, and interact a lot with students during it. Only thing is that their tests are pretty difficult, coming from someone who has always done pretty well in every bio class. Just lock in a week before a test, memorize the summative quiz answers, and reach out to UTAs.
Professor West cares about the well being of her students, but their tests are challenging. We don't get to review them afterward, make sure you re-read and take good notes on the lectures after them.
I will never ever take them ever again. The exams are awful (except the first one), questions were confusing. lecture slides are too wordy and a bit confusing; rewatching the lecture recording doesn't really help. I thought the class was pretty good at the beginning of the sem, but it got worse and worse. can't see what u did wrong on test
Absolutely awesome.
I do not recommend West. Exams were insanely hard, lot of MCQ where the answer could be one, multiple, or none, and no partial credit. You do get retakes which was very helpful. Overall boring lectures, very condescending and rude, but grading scheme was quite forgiving. If you study you'll do fine
Dr. West is very kind and good at explaining things. Lectures are mandatory attendance and easy to follow. There is a lot of homework but you can get it done fast. Exams are so hard, did not get over a 75% on any one before we got to do corrections. MCQ portions are impossible and got a lot of points taken off for short answer exam questions.
Dr. West is definitely over-hated. They are a very passionate and approachable professor, and they clearly want you to learn. Exams are difficult, just as any bio class, but the grade is padded with tons of bonus points and homework points that are easy to get. Also, 8.5x11 cheat sheet on exams helped a lot! I learned a lot from this class.
