Very nice man, but has thick accent and can be a little difficult to understand. LOVES teaching the subject. His class is however a hard one and he can move at a fairly fast pace, or at least he does if you take the class during summer.
Took summer course, very nice guy, heavy accent, but he loves the subject like no other. Tests are on reserve in library, but you need to study A LOT to get a decent grade if you're not a science-sorta person.
the best physics teacher ever!! he doesn't give you any impossibly difficult tests; they are reasonable. he is always helpful, too.
He is a good teacher; his lecture is informative but boring. Tests are reasonable not to hard.
his accent is impossible! and his class is hard. also he has a thing for asian girls! dont go to his office alone!
He has a thick Persian accent, very hard to understand, very monotone voice, no mater how much cofee you drink, he will put you to sleep if you take his class in the auditorium.
I took both his physics 280 and 285 classes. he is so cool. you have to get use to his accent but it doesn't take long.the way his grading system works, makes getting an A easy. 85% is the cut-off for A and 20% of that is your lab reports. 4 test. each 20%. he offers sometimes up to 10% extra credit
his lectures are not helpful at all, and how he grades the exams is unfair. tests are sometimes hard, sometimes easy. overall he's okay, but I don't wanna take his class anymore.
Great Teacher, Great personality. Study his old tests. Do the problems at the end of each chapter and you will get an A. You can do extra creidt too. His Class is fun. Get his old test. He gives the same problems usually.
Very strange guy. Extremely nice one on one. Gets really mad when people are talking during a lecture. All of his tests are the old tests in different orders- memorize them! Reading is helpful b/c he is hard to understand and sometimes I only know what he's talking about b/c I read. Tests are hard so study from the old ones.
Faridi is a funny guy. He doesn't collect HW and gives 3 tests and a final (each worth 20% of your grade). The grading scale is 85 is an A, 75 is a B, 65 is a C, 45 is a D. He gives an easy extra credit assignment that is worth 3-7% of your grade, depending on how well you do it. He doesn't like stupid questions or rude people, so be polite.
he is the best teacher you can ask for. fair and easy grading scale, fair test and mostly from the book problems, huge extra credit, nice nice nice nice.... person.
Didnt even give me a chance.......
He is very strange. He only goes over theory in class, untill we begged him to do some example problems. He is hard to understand and not very clear. If you are looking for a physics class with little work, this is it, but don't think you will get an easy A.

I took both classes at one time, and it wasn't hard like people think. Know your calculus. Really "understand" the concepts from exercise/problem. Read chapter and do some exercises before go to class. Faridi knows his stuffs well; so if you don't understand something, ask him! Class is time consuming, but what do you expect?
Horrible instructor. Does not care about teaching - only about getting his textbook published. Exams have nothing to do what is taught in class. Worse than Levine.
Good prof. Make sure you learn the concepts by heart from the book. He does a lot of odd numbered problems from the chapters. Lets you use the text book for the tests. The tests are mainly to check if you know your concepts - soemtimes they happen to be from the book word for word. Do well in labs and you will be set.
Very mean professor. You'll def regret if you take his class. I learned nothing from him. He doesnt even care if the students are still with him during the long lecture, and doesnt understand english very well. Basically he just repeats himself all the time. He also makes students do some stupid typing for getting his book published. Its useless. Avoid him if possible.
If you are good at Physics than he would be okay, but if you are not take someone else! He has a bad temper but also a good sense of humor. Generally made the whole class feel stupid including me and I got an A...
Dr Faridi is of 2 extremes: he is an extremely funny guy and I think cares about students who are respectful and enthusiastic about the material. Hes also very short tempered and doesnt tolerate disrespect. Hes old school in that he doesnt understand that people learn differently, but his test are way fair and hes generous with partial credit.
I don't know what you guys are talking about, I've had him for only one day and I can understand him just fine! And you guys are wrong to think that Faridi doesn't know his stuff, he certainly does! He made the course manageable so I don't know why you guys are complaining. I don't know him all that well but on 1st day, he's the complete opposite.
Just to let you guys know, there's tutor name Kamil in the Student Success Center who will help you out tremendously! He earned A in the class and can help you with Faridi more than Levine. But do the homework first or else you'll get lost in the class.
This was the worst class i have ever had to sit a whole semester through. He is unhelpful, rude, and even mean to his students. If at all possible avoid this professor, if no other section is available take it at another school. I have had my fair share of college classes and this by far was the absolute worst class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Exams are fair, if you study the textbook and get the concepts you should do fine on the exam. The Final is really hard though so do well on first 3 exams and you shouldn't need to fret over final. Lecture is necessary because he goes over hw problems that help you to get the concepts. Labs are too easy he gives extra credit if you type ur conclusi
I liked this professor. I think a lot of these comments are over the edge. I can understand everything he says. He is old school and you have got to get on his good side! Labs are easy and exams are open book. His lectures are useless, except he gives you hints on which problems will show up. He's nicer than you think...and go to office hours.
Same as 285 just different material. other than that the classes are the same having the exact same format. youll enjoy this class better than 285 since the concepts are much more fun and easier. just ALOT of math so make sure you know your calculus really well. you also need some calc 3 just the basics though.
Extremely intelligent professor who expects you to actually be a student and study. he wont hold your hand and baby you, you have to put in the work to learn the material, he is very willing to help you if you have done that. very fair tests, and very generous on partial credit on exam questions.
Very knowledgeable professor who really loves physics. He expects students to be respectful, so if he seems mean to you, you are probably doing something wrong. Some students are disrespectful by obliviously talking in class, texting, facebooking, etc. Exams more than fair--very similar to released exams on his website. Grades leniently.
Awesome guy, all around great professor.
This prof is really good at and enjoys physics. Grades very leniently, esp. on labs.
I felt his class was challenging. However, his lab were easy to write up. I recommend typing everything out including the calculations to receive extra points because you'll need it! Faridi is a appoachable person who's willing to help when needed. You don't have a choice of instructor so I suggest you get familiar with his teaching style. GL

easy class. not hard to get B but not that easy either so study hard. i could have gotten an A but i just make a lot of stupid mistakes on his exams or im just really stupid. study his old exams that are online they are the most helpful
Mr. Faridi is a smart guy, but not a very good teacher. Just writes a bunch of stuff on the board that doesn't make much sense. However, exams are very fair, and are similar to old exams he posts online. While you won't get much from the class, just read, do a few problems, and you'll be fine. Lenient on grading labs and exams.
goooooooooooood professor take him!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a very nice professor. You should take him. He's funny at times. Seriously, you could never find a teacher anywhere at UC or community college like him.
if you want to take physics 280 and 285 at OCC, your only choice is this guy, so get used to him. his labs were easy compared to levine, who taught 185, but lectures were little challenging due to the difficulty of the subject. basically, he just goes over the textbook, so i recommend reading the book. it is the best physics book in my opinion.
He knows what he's talking about on the subject, but couldn't be bothered to build reasonable tests that have correct answers (even tho text provides them). There's something wrong when a class of 25 students takes OPEN BOOK MULTIPLE CHOICE exams and averages 60%. Maybe he's great in higher levels, but stay away from this guy for conceptual!!!
Very unclear. UNBELIEVABLE.
He's the only professor that teaches 280/285 and he's not very good at it. He lectures straight from the book and it's painfully boring. His tests can be very difficult and his grading is extremely arbitrary. Two people will write the same answers--one will get 5/5 and the other 2.5/5. Study the text heavily and you should do well.
Prof Faridi may either go off on a tangent or continually repeat himself during lectures so one stands the risk of being lost if he hasn't done the prelecture reading. Pay close attention to the derivations on the board in order to spot the tricks that are used. Read the book THOROUGHLY and do the problems (try to avoid the sln manual!). Fair exams
He is one of the worst prof I have ever had. He literally stands in front of the class with the text book and lectures from it. No one pays any attention. He is super rude and condescending to the students. If you have to take him most of the exam problems are taken from the practice exams posted online
I had him for both 280 and 285. He is an easy grader on labs, which is good because the lecture material can be pretty tough. His exams are similar to the old ones posted online. You won't get much from his lecture, so your best bet is to read the text slowly and deliberately, and practice a variety of problems on your own. Good luck!
This class is much easier than 280, but still one of the most challenging classes at OCC. Take good notes, get on his good side (read: don't say stupid stuff during class while trying to be funny), do the homework problems and study. An A is not an easy grade to get in this class, but it's very achievable.
This is probably the hardest class at OCC. You'll be doing lots of integration to find the effect of magnetic and electric fields in varying situations. The material is not easy and requires careful study and practice. Getting an A in this class is not an easy task, so be prepared to work. It doesn't help that he grades somewhat arbitrarily either.
He is why tenure is a bad idea. If you can, avoid this teacher, there is a good physics teacher at G.W.C. and I.V.C.
Make sure to read the book and check out his sample tests on line. The class is pretty cool and I liked the teacher.
The class is super boring; it's just a bunch of monotone lectures. Faridi is nice, smart, and a VERY generous grader, but the lectures are useless. Basically, listen for hints that he gives about which questions will be on the test, and then self-study. Get old labs from his former students. They will cut your workload by maybe 30-40% in his class.
I took this guy for phys 280 and 285. 285 is much easier than 280. labs are easy. tests are kind of tough, but possible to do.
I was scared of physics before taking this class, and I thought I was not going to get an A because this subject is not my strong point. However, in this class I got an A. He grades extremely liberally. I'm not sure about how his other physics classes are, but this one is an easy A if you put some effort in. Highly recommend.
Do not take for him for lab. He has very exact standards for how you should do them. Very ambiguous grading as well. His labs were stressful
Took him last semester for lab. He lags on grading the assignments, and he also has high standards as to how the lab should be done. I would advise taking a different lab professor that is less strict.
He's a great guy. Tests are pretty tough, but 80% is an A, so it evens it out. Don't just study the old tests he puts up because a lot of the questions will be stuff you haven't seen. If you have the time and want an A you have to read the book until you understand it. You get to make a formula sheet for each test, which helps. I liked this class.
Good luck..
This guy is useless take another professor if at all possible. I often question if it's even worth going to class at all because all he seems to do is read from the text book, in probably the most monotone voice I've ever heard. I'm writing this while sitting in his class if that gives you an idea... However, if you read the book you should do fine
This professor is not one that you should take unless you absolutely have to. Class averages tend to be around 55-60% and he does poorly at getting content across well, or sometimes even correctly. He was not very friendly when I went to his office hours. It seemed like he didn't like being bothered at all, outside or inside of class.
Don't listen to all the reviews. This class isn't as bad as everyone says it is. You can definitely get a B in this class by scoring around 10/20-ish on all your tests. Do all of the ec because he gives like 6% ec and lab write ups are easy. The first test is the hardest then it gets easier (in my opinion). Practice tests are the best way to study
He is simply horrible at teaching this material. I have a 3.8 GPA and I believe I am going to struggle to get a B in this class. He teaches the opposite of Drum and you must read the book till you understand it. I read the book during class because his lectures only add confusion to the content of the book. Tests are not conceptual at all.
My fascination in Quantum Mechanics and the very fabric of Space-Time bloomed thanks to this man. When you get to his Relativity Lectures, stay focused. I swear he morphed into Einstein when reciting the Relativity Proofs! Stay curiousAsk questions. Feel he didn't satisfactorily answered your question(s)? Visit at office hours. He's a good man!
Ask him and he'll help you out. This guy is much easier than Guerra, so if you're looking for an A, take him.
He grades very generously. Honestly, just read the book, do the practice problems, and you'll get an A.
Grades easy, offers tons of extra credit, and gives you a good book to use (halliday).Thought I was going to get a C but got an A. What's not to love about this guy. Don't talk when he's lecturing because he doesn't take too kindly to that, but everyone here should already know that. After all, this is YOUR education, so take him for that UC shot.
Good professor, just have a hard time with physics. He expects you to pre-read and pre-study sections before you come to lecture! So be prepared! Also very generous grader and lab is very, very easy. Although exams can be very tough
Faridi is a cool guy. His class is laid back. But his lectures are not clear so do not expect to learn from him. You must learn on your own. His exams are tough. Fortunately Faridi knows the class is tough so he grades generously. His labs were not too bad, that class had no idea what to do alot of the times. He offers extra cred for lecture & lab
Physics is a confusing subject by nature and it doesn't help that Faridi only covers the mathmatical side of it. If you want inuition, read the Feynman Lectures. The book will be your best friend. You'll never know what to expect for tests. Fortunately he's a very generous grader. Lab section is easy points. Do the extra credit and you should be ok
Faridi isn't that amazing of a professor to best honest. HOWEVER, his tests are not hard, compared to Drum's. You can probably get away with an A without trying too hard. Yes, you will have to do some reading on your own. Finding previous tests will definitely help cut down your workload. Take if you're on a tight schedule and need an easy class.
LONG and UNCLEAR lectures, and exams are extremely hard even if you do all the homework's and online practice exams, but if he sees that you are trying to solve the exam problems he will give you partial credit, he is so generous but extremely tough exams, you can get C's in all 4 exams and with his generosity you will get a B
Faridi is not a great teacher. If you learn better independently then take him because his lectures are all mathematics, he never shows you how to use physics formulas all he really does in lecture is derive formulas. Very hard tests but gives lots of partial credit even if you don't know how to do the problem.
Faridi is a nice person, but his lecture is really unclear. he grades super generously. but you gotta teach yourself. about the level of difficulty, calc based physics is just basically a very hard class.
He teaches almost nothing. You learn everything yourself from the book. His grading scale is very generous with 80% and above as an A, and not many people get A's. That should tell you how his teaching is.
Great and organized person! He is probably the best full time faculty that OCC Physics has after Professors Drum and Guerra. He lectures pretty much on what he will give on the tests. Gives us a lot of practice test, homework are a lot but most of them are interesting and helpful. Generous curve! And highly recommended for engineering majors.
I just saw a very negative comment for Dr. Abbas for his PHYS 110 class, and thought of putting this straight! You could not ask for a more organized and precise professor for such a demanding subject! Trust me, he is the nicest guy and will go out of his way to help you but the only chance you have passing this class is if you're not lazy.
Professor Faridi is really funny and hilarious, he is an average teacher nonetheless very competent in the subject material. You need to work hard to get a good result!
He didn't write anything on the whiteboard until week 10, instead reading verbatim off pre written notes. Then he derived a few formulas, but he never worked out a single example problem in class. Waste of time; 1/2 the class attends lecture. No homework, but you have to read/learn everything yourself. The worst Physics professor I've ever had.
PHYS 285 is the toughest Physics course at OCC and who else better than Dr. Faridi to teach it! He gives responsibility to students to learn, where his role is just as a facilitator. I really like his way of teaching which gives me more pressure to succeed! I am sure I will do well at UCI with the training I get from Dr. Faridi's teaching!!!
For people who are lazy and wants the instructor to give them an easy time, Dr. Faridi is NOT the instructor!! If you really like Physics and like a challenging learning experience take Dr. Faridi, one of the best Physics instructors at OCC. He is really tough and makes you learn the material by yourself which is SO IMPORTANT for our future.
He is doing a great help for CSU and UC professors by weeding off "would be" transfer STEM graduates who expected Physics to be like their grade 2 Arts class! Half the class has dropped because they realized that its not like their Grade 2 Arts class! Keep up the good job!
Great teacher, very caring and highly experienced!
I really enjoyed his teaching style. As a student planning to major in Physics his demanding course was exactly what I wanted, great experience! Thank you professor!!!
Teach yourself, learn from the book
Professor Faridi is something else people. He's pretty funny, but also difficult at the same time. For the first part of the semester, he was using power points and the second part was on the white board. He's generous with his grading, but it's inconsistent. Many people might get the same answer, but only few will get credit. Need the book
I took phy185, 280 and 285 with Professor Faridi. The tests are a little bit tough, but he curves a lot. He is a very nice guy, and I really like his class.
Faridi "lectures" by doing problems on the board, and he expects a student to know what to do beforehand. It was difficult to follow along, as there is some later calculus 2 & 3 required. I had to learn by myself, reading from the book and looking at the solution guide. The tests are difficult, seeing as how the average is 70%, but he curves.
His lectures consist of proving the equations that you'll have to use during the exams, but you'll have to pay attention to what the equation actually is, because he's just going to keep going to the next. And as far as the actual concept behind the equations that will for the most part elude you. Be prepared to have to have to study on your own.
Professor Faridi's an incredibly knowledgeable professor, however he lacks in the delivery department. His lectures are INCREDIBLY easy to wander off of, he often reads over proofs for a majority of the class and sparks almost no interest. He's an easy grader, and allows cheatsheets for all tests (fairly standard in college physics courses)
My tips for succeeding: reproduce the sample problems in books and his lectures, then watch the solutions of the homework (on the syllabus) and find other similarly doable problems in the book. DO THE HOMEWORK OR AT LEAST LOOK AT THE SOLUTION AND REPRODUCE IT ! He doesn't collect them, so a lot failed the class. Problems are similar to homework.
He makes a bad first impression. You're an adult now, deal with it. If you don't do the homework, you will NOT pass, but he doesn't collect and grade the homework. He gives the impression of not caring, but as the semester goes on it's obvious that he does care greatly. Do the work and attend the lectures, all the tools to pass are there.
Dr. Faridi is the classic example of don't judge a book by its cover. He seems standoffish at first but he is hilarious. All of these bad comments are just people that didn't study or didn't try. He is not there to hold your hand. You have to do the homework and read the book. He is very generous if he sees that you are trying. I def. recommend.
He's a genuinely nice guy, but like others have said, a poor lecturer- rather monotonic and he focuses entirely on proofs, derivations etc rather than any of the concepts behind the equations. However he does allow cheat sheets and most of the test problems are similar to the homework.
Toughest class I've taken but is to be expected considering it is physics. He is a terrible teacher and communicator. Couldn't learn a thing in the lecture which is a shame considering some stuff is really hard to understand on your own. Grades really strict but generously decided to curve it at the end.
Fraidi is trying to explain everything to his students but his teaching style is preventing him from delivering the whole idea. Also, when he starts the class, he does not say what Chapter or what section. Also, all the examples that he do in class is just proofs for formulas but he rarely does problems with numbers. his lab is easy.
If you can pass any of his classes with an A, you can get into Harvard or find the cure for cancer!
I've heard that this professor is pretty good if you're taking higher level physics courses, but for phys185, I wouldn't take him unless you're pretty confident in your knowledge of physics. His lectures are quite confusing and he goes back and forth between topics, and he doesn't like to use numbers in examples. Not bad if you know physics though.
Long story short, he is tough. But you learn a lot from him. I named him Ferrari. Like only a handful of best people in their respective fields can buy Ferrari cars, people who are really interested in Physics understand him. Once you can catch his lectures, upper-division classes are no longer a problem for you. His exams are extremely difficult too, but doable.
It's the second week and he goes back and forth between topics too much, the first week he was talking about vectors (on track with textbook), but then he skips to talk about gravitational force and pendulums as an example I'm assuming? His lectures are very messy and sometimes hard to follow, he has no structure or labeling.
I'm currently taking his physics class for my major, and his lectures are by far extremely useless and unnecessary. Professor Faridi explains many concepts in a much more complicated way than needed, causing more confusion for me and my peers instead of making it seem clearer. His teaching ways are very monotonous as well and you need to read a lot
Heavy accent and handwriting is so hard to read. Only grades in gradebook were exams and extra credit. No homework assigned. Definitely recommend finding a better teacher. I understand it's a difficult class overall, but he's still not that great. No one paid attention in his lectures bc he was that boring, btw. Really nice guy though.
