He is a good prof. and his tests are VERY easy...Definately reccomend~
outlines for tests are extremely helpful; he has good stories
I can't believe this guy got good ratings! I guess it's because his class if very easy. He is the worst teacher I've ever had. For lecture, he reads from the textbook and his exams are riddled with errors.
Good prof. definately an interesting guy and knowledgable.

Mehdi will yell at his students for not answering in the way he sees fit. If students do not do well on the test, he will create tests that are harder next time.
NOT VERY CLEAR WITH ASSIGNMENTS. SEEMS INTELLIGENT BUT HE CAN NOT TEACH. HIS GRADING SUCKS.
I love how when you ask him what/why you got the wrong on the M.C. tests, he tells you that you picked the wrong answer. and he tells you to study from your bubble sheets (but with no test questions or review sheets). DON'T TAKE!
Horrible, this professor is rude and unapproachable for students. I would not recommend this class to an in-law. Study guides are not helpful and professor expects quotes from the book on tests.
This guy really sucks. The tests are badly composed, his lectures are impossible to follow, and he is always very irritable.
he's a good chap, you cant understand what he is saying half of the time, but the text is easy and the tests are as well
The most difficult introduction class i have ever had. Hard to pick up on his dialect sometimes. Tests are difficult and have lots of small details in them. Good luck, You might need it.
He's really not as bad as everyone else says. He's not as hard to understand as some other porfs I've had, and you get used to his accent after a class ot two. Tests are pretty easy as long as you read the book. Not very approachable, but he's pretty good
You really don't need to pay attention at all in this class, no assignments. Just show up to class (attendence required) and read the book as his tests are basically straight from it. Tests not too hard.
this teacher was not very nice at all. People were afraid to ask any question, even a review question. just a little tip also, never come late to his class, he freaks out if you're one min late.
A good guy, but can be difficult to understand and isn't always incredibly clear. Studying will only help for the tests so much...
very hard, unhelpful, mean tone, attitude is that he is better than everyone and teaching is a waste of his time.
He's really not that bad if you on time for class. The tests are super easy if you read for them and go to class...
When he bothered to show up for class he was a complete ****. His grading made no sense and he would not explain his reasons. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS MAN!!!
he's a man's man, he is cool, comfortable, but stearn, just go to class.
Not as bad as everyone seems. Attendance is required, but the tests aren't hard if you read the book, and he tells you exactly what is going to be on it. Accent only takes like 10 minutes to get used to. Can come off harsh, but he is smart, and a good teacher
he is rude and is very unwilling to help. when you ask questions he cant remember what he was talking about so he yells at you. he hates when you are late and attendance is taken but you dont learn anything from being there. tests are nothing like lecture. you have to be able to read the book
Medhi was a terrible prof. He always looks pissed off, it was nice when he wasn't there. He yells at students for the smallest things, wants students to respect him, but he doesn't seem to have respect for his students. Don't be late for his class and don't talk at all in there. He'll yell at you.
Worst class I have ever taken!
If you interested in becoming part of a new “educational paradigm” where the work load is insurmountable and your grades are abysmal then this is the professor for you.
this class sucks! all the material that he tries to teach us at one time is unreal! seems like this class has to become your full-time job to get a decent grade! he says he lets the students run the class, but then tells you to stop talking about a subject when he gets sick of it! class time is unorganized and the grading sucks!
i really enjoy listening to him. he has great storys and realy knows his stuff. i do like him as a professor but the tests are tough
Mr. Mehdi is a good guy, he is stern at first.. but i think its to filter out the ones who arent going to work hard. He definately knows his stuff, and you get used to the accent. Go to class, study a few hours for each test and you'll get an A or a B.
The class isn't too hard at all. He has a accent, but you get used to it quickly. To succeed, read the chapter before you talk about it in class, then highlight in the book as he lectures because he pretty much quotes it. Great teacher.
It was hard to understand him. You can't miss class without harsh punishment on grades. Tests are hard.
He is a good teacher. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. His accent may be hard to follow at first, but he grows on you. He is kind of repetitive in class, but his tests are easy and multiple choice. If students just study the material for class, they will get an A. It's all memorization. The tests contain lots of statistics & definitions! Read
This guy does not care about his students! He makes the class as easy as possible for himself by only lecturing and giving no grades except for on tests! Wont allow you to miss class at all unless your grade is affected. Not helpful and very scary to talk to.
He absolutely does not care about his students. He does not prepare for the class and cares only about making class easy for himself.
He is a good professor you just have to show interest and be prepared. He can be hard at times but he is a good professor. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about! i would take him so that you learn and have good experience
I had my doubts the first couple classes, seemed really dark. But he's really cool - you just got to talk to him and he's got good stories. Sure his english is hard to understand, but he's wise. Lectures aren't much, but what do you expect from a 100 level class? I like it.
prof mehdi was very nice and had a lot of interesting stories. if you read the chapters you will do fine on the test, the whole of the tests are on notes and the material covered in the book. the only downside is attendance is required so if you dont show up it will hurt your grade. but overall this class was great i got a b+.
easy interesting class. hes hard to understand at first but not horrible. tests are all on readings and notes. read the book, pass the class. he has alot of interesting stories and is fun.
Prof Mehdi is a really great teacher, he has really good stories, he is a little hard to understand, but you get used to it, go to class, read the chapters and you will do great on the tests. And if there isn't anything else to cover and there is still 20 mintues left of class he will let you out early. It's great!!
Got to read the book and you'll do well
.......
He is an overall good teacher. He kind of flew over the handle a couple times. Attendance is mandatory and DO NOT BE LATE. Read the book and the test is pretty straigh forward though I had to really study for it.
This class was very easy. As long as you go to class and pay attention you will be fine. He explains everything very well and is willing to explain any questions students have!I would recommend taking him for this class.
make sure you go to class, and don't leave early if you do he'll take another attandance. Overall a pretty easy classs i got an A but make sure you read the book chapter before taking the test
He was an extremely brilliant professor. the only negative I had was that he was hard to understand sometimes because of his accent.
bad prof. attendence is mandatory. don't be late or he will stare at you until you leave. doesn't understand that students might get sick and not have the $ to go to the dr (therefore don't have a dr note) don't take him!
Go to class, don't be late, pay attention. It's that simple. Everyone else is right about when you get sick tho, he's a pain about attendance. Graded just on 5 tests-they can be hard but just study the book. The tests are straight out of the book.
this professor is very intelligent..but his problem is that he thinks that we are at his intelligent level, he spends the whole lecturetalking about iraq and his work with high US officials. he is hard to understand but the overall material is easy.
He was probably the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Tests are the only thing that will get you points and he sucks at explaining the material. I emailed him once asking if I could come in for help and he never responded. You think that if a teacher cared enough about his students and how well they did, they would take time out of their da
This class is all out of the book. He gives you the website for the book that has practice quizzes on them that you can take and these questions are 75% the same on the test. His lectures are extremely boring and useless but if you read the textbook and take the quizzes online you will do just fine on the tests.
He is VERY helpful. A nice person who tries to help students. After exams he asks, "What did you think of the test" and "Is there anything that I could do to help you guys do better?". One student even admitted, "no, you are doing everything well, I just didn't read the material" He uses many teaching strategies and I would recommend him.
Hard to understand because of his accent. Attendance is mandatory. Read through powerpoints that we are supposed to take notes on waaay to fast. No homework. Based off of 3 or 4 Exams. Have to read the textbook in order to pass.
Great teacher. He has an accent that takes some getting used to but he will repeat things for you. He gives you a lot of personal examples. Grades are based on 4 tests. But the first test he let us take twice. Same exact questions that way we could get used to his question styles.
This professor is really straightforward. There are 5 exams (but he shortened it to 4 for our class). He tells you ahead of time exactly what will be on the test and what you should study for. Attend all the classes and read the materials and you will be fine. He will even bump up your grades if you don't miss class and participate!
Abbas is great. He really cares about his students. It's not super obvious initially, and his accent takes some getting used to, but he makes sure you have everything you need to do well in his class, and he is very helpful if you are struggling. He values your input and will implement it best he can. Take sociology with him. :)
This professor was useless. He blamed his students for his inability to teach. His grades were based off of tests only, and tests didn't fillow the study guides that were given for the class. Do not take this class with this professor.
Strict about attendance 5% off everyday you miss. Will point you out in class if you are rude. Otherwise very helpful to make sure you know what's on the test. Would take him for another class.
Great professor. The Powerpoints may seem a bit rushed but he makes sure to give everything you need to know before the exam in review sessions during class. He is very helpful and is very good to you if you show him respect. Just show up to class, don't come in late and don't play on your cellphone and you will do fine
This guy is awesome, so funny and chill! You can easily get a high grade in this course without a whole lot of effort. Exams are straightforward, and he does multiple review sessions! Only thing is that he doesn't tolerate talking during his lectures, but who does. RECOMMEND x10
Super easy class. Just study the notes the night before and go to class and you will get an A
He likes to talk A LOT, also repeats him self A LOT. It makes the classes super boring. However, it's a super easy class. Grade is based on only tests. However, if you miss class he will drop your grade. So don't miss class and study for the tests and there's an A.
Very easy class. Reviews are exactly the same in the test. Study what he says and you will get an A. If he sees the entire class not doing well, he will drop the lowest score. If you do well in the finals and not the tests, he gives a curve. But listen to his reviewed questions and find the answers in the book and you will get an A.
Took this class online and it was TERRIBLE. Not clear on grading and you had no idea what he wanted from you. In order to get an A on a paper it needed to be persuasive but these were all INFORMATIVE essay exams. They are long and he does not give out A's. Said very good is a B+ & excellent is A but he gave a B+ on a good. Not clear at all.
Definitely a good professor! You have to read the material before coming to each class sessions though, or you won't understand anything that's going on. He does give lectures in class, although if you would want to take note in his class--you're out of luck because he expects you know what you should've read. Attendance points counts!
He is a very critical professor. Attendance is important! Do not miss any of his classes. He will email the whole class the notes, but it's best not to miss class. You will lose points. He teaches fast, but well. Always be prepared. Read the book!
Attendance is mandatory, you have 4 exams and he will drop 1 of the first three. He expects you to show up, listen and BE ON TIME! I did learn a lot from him, you you pay attention in class and do the in class reviews you will earn a good grade. Definitely recommend him!
Mehdi is an intense, unconventional professor. No homework all semester. Show up to class, pay attention and you'll do great. Mehdi does a fantastic job of repeating what he went over. 3 tests and a final with group reviews in class for each. Some questions on the test were from the book, but I really didn't use it and still got an A. Great prof!
Not sure how this guy is in person but DO NOT take his online course. He clearly doesn't read the papers and only skims through for citations. Everything he emails including the syllabus is filled with so many spelling errors it actually makes it confusing, it was so bad once he had to resend an assignment. Lazy, short and simple.
Lose 5% of your grade each and every time you miss class. Very strict in class on phone use and eating? Strange but okay. VERY hard to understand... same old same old class.. would have gotten more out of the class if I could understand him.
Not hard really but you must try. 5 written exams. This man is very highly respected!
4 exams lost will be dropped out of the first two. Fourth Exam is cumulative. Show up, listen very carefully and READ the material. You will pas. Its really an easy class.
End of the semester, gives you your final exam results and days you missed. You meet with him one on one. He gives you a grade based off what he sees. I missed some days due to illness (attendance required) so I went and talked to him about my grade. Thought he may want to see a doctor's note but he ended up lowering my grade. He's rude.
Took this online, no homework just had to write 5 papers. Put a lot of work and effort into these papers only to have him knock off letter grades because I didn't have a "complete" definition of one question. He doesn't give clear direction and has many typos. He wrote down the wrong grades for me as well. Really disorganized. Take if you want..
Absolutely no student professor interaction, his grading method is ambiguous and arbitrary. If you're looking to do nothing but regurgitate citations from only one book, this is a good class to take. If you'd actually like to learn or do some critical thinking on Social Change don't waste your money.
I sincerely advise you guys do not take this class. I took online, his grading is so poor, he gives you C for just citation, even though I added. Sometimes he give you B for shortening your answers, instead of A. Be advise, don't wast your time and money.
You can't understand what he's saying because of his accent, so you'll have to listen really hard. He takes his job too personally, so don't do anything wrong because you'll offend him.
His powerpoints are unorganized, riddled with errors, and doesnt include all the material he wants you to know. He has an accent that requires some getting used to and he often mispronounces words. There are only 4 tests the whole semester and they are all multiple choice. This class is ridiculously easy, but beware: he is strict on attendance
All answers for the exams MUST come out of the textbook which was written by Abbas. Exams are around 10 pages in length, but he only writes about one sentence of feedback and knocks off letter grades for simple mistakes. He doesn't give clear instruction and makes grammatical errors constantly. Lazy, disorganized and inconsiderate.
You lose 5% of your grade when you are late or use your phones, so don't get on his bad side. If you show up on time, listen to the lecture, and review, you will do well. You usually get out of class early everyday, there's no homework, and there's 4 multiple choice exams. His accent is heavy, but not that difficult to understand.
This professor assigns papers that aren't allowed to be based on any outside information besides the textbook he wrote, leaving no room for any other interpretation besides his own. The only feedback given was regarding "the paper was unorganized" and the feedback was always written without punctuation and grammatical errors. Not based on content.
wouldn't suggest taking this class. I am an excellent writer but each of his "exams" I got nothing better then a C. I spent at least three hours on each exam.
He posted NOTHING except the syllabus, brief instructions and "exams" (these are just papers from the textbook he' put together for this class). No valuable feedback/input on grading. My papers have been used as examples of good work by other professors, and I can't get above a B+ with no explanation. I can thank this class for ruining my 4.0 GPA.
I really enjoyed taking his class. The tests were pretty easy, and he always put you in groups to review before each exam. You need to show up to class every day to pass however. If you miss more than 3 classes, he drops your grade a whole letter grade. If you don't miss a single class, he bumps it up a whole letter grade.
I don't mind him as a person, I think he's a really great guy but he's just awful at teaching. Sometimes you can't understand him so it effects your learning and his test are kinda hard so you'll have to study for them, a lot.
10+ page papers on the textbook; you literally need to read the textbook, format the paper in his obscure way, and then answer the questions of his poorly worded and vague "exam rules" just to get a decent grade. I got a B- because I formatted one section incorrectly, even though I got all of the information correct. Worst class I have ever taken.
He has very vague instructions for his papers and never grades any higher than a C. He also never gives any responses or reasoning to why he decided to grade a paper so low either so, you can't reflect. You can only use the book on the papers and must cite the pages used. Even if you do so, don't expect a grade higher than C.
Terrible grader. Lazy and unclear. Gives no reason for why he grades low on all exams. Has terrible guid lines for exams and knocks of a ton of point for not providing headings the way he IMAGINES. Does not provide examples of how he wants exam papers done either. Its a guessing game you won't win. Don't take his class unless necessary.
Pro's: Usually get out of class early, straightforward classroom structure, you get a day to know exactly whats on the test. Con's: EXTREMELY strict cell phone and attendance policy (even a minute late counts as tardy). If you're late or have your phone out, then you lose 5% of your grade. Boring lectures, and he can be unhelpful at times.
He is the best professor. he is serious about his materials. do not skip class that will help your grade, at last.
Worst class ever! The whole semester consisted of 4, 12 page exams, that he supplied questions for. Thats it. I feel like I didnt learn much and wasted money on this course. You have to have the paper formatted a specific way, but he is very unclear on how he wants it exactly. Very tough grader! I had a 4.0 before taking his course.
Several years ago I chose Ph.D. Abbas Mehdi for 4-5 Sociology classes. I endeavored to take classes from him whenever possible. The quality of his instruction was always excellent. The difficult of his classes was "average" at the lower level, but significant at the upper level. I learned to write from Abbas - through considerable practice.
Avoid this professor at all costs! He only gives exams which are papers you need to write from a textbook that he wrote. He will tell you exam your answers are still incorrect even after you got them from his book. He will also tell you that your paper formatting is wrong but will not tell you how to fix it. This class killed my GPA. Good luck!
By far the worst professor I've had at SCSU. I am halfway through the class and received a C- and C+ on our first two "exams" (12 page essays that he gives vague instructions on). I have maintained a 3.75 GPA, and this class is the first I have ever gotten grades this low. I pride myself on my writing and know these grades don't reflect my work.
I've only been a college student for a year now, but I can easily say this might be one of the worst professors I have/will have. Class consists of no teaching and reading 4-6 chapters of a textbook and writing four 12 page essays. He provides little to no feedback on what to improve on. Received a C- and C+ on my first two essays. Don't recommend
Tough grader for sure. I pride myself in my writing abilities but in this class no matter how hard I tried all I got were B's. He has no grading rubric and is very unclear about what he wants. he gives little to no feedback when grading. Only 4 tests throughout the semester which sounds easy, but each has to be at least 12 pages long. Good luck!
Four 12 page paper exams are required. Feedback is not great nor does Mehdi do an efficient job at telling you how to improve. Papers have to be based off textbook ONLY, somehow everything should be in your own words but it all stated in the book? Not clear on grading, or what grade you receive, but seemed to be pretty accessible by email. Meh.
The professor was okay in the beginning, but towards midterm, I had contacted him to ask how I can improve my grade and he said "read my feedback"... his feedback said to go into more detail. so I did and received a C- for too much detail. I asked again for help and he completely ignored all my emails until the last day of classes.
Professor Mehdi is the worst professor at SCSU. I contacted people in the class and asked for their feedback and he COPIED / PASTED THE SAME FEEDBACK ON EVERYONE'S PAPER. I ensure you he does not read the entire paper since he ignored my ENTIRE PARAGRAPH ABOUT HIS UNFAIR GRADING. This man is lazy, inconsiderate, and outright unfair.
Avoid at all costs! Worst professor I've ever had! Doesn't post anything on D2L except for super vague guidelines for the papers. He grades super harshly and gives terrible feedback. Scheduled a zoom meeting to talk about how I could improve my grade and he just yelled at me for not following the guidelines.
Didn't learn valuable sociological info, learned to appease writing requirements of sum1 unwilling to grade fairly. Potentially harmful 4 freshmen who'll take that mindset with them thru out rest of education. Kills creativity, causes u 2 question thoughts/ideas. Seek profs who grade on ability & effort; not 1 so committed to grading poorly.
Avoid if possible. Whole class is graded on 4 "exams" which are really just 12 page papers where you answer his questions. No outside sources but the one textbook for class allowed. Useless feedback. I was told I did not cite from the book enough at the same time I was not being original enough? Could not provide any grading rubric.
HORRIBLE CLASS. Found it highly unprofessional and disrespectful for him to write, "DID YOU WRITE THIS PAPER OR JUST COPY FROM THE BOOK." on the top of my second exam. Everything was in my own words. I have had strict A's in all my writing classes but cannot seem to please him, no matter how hard I try. SCSU needs to fire him immediately.
This professor hardly ever answered any of my questions about anything. he would always just say check the syllabus or read your textbooks. all answers from the homework had to absolutely come from the textbook. which was in my opinion very massive. I could not even have my own thoughts on the topic and his feedback was not helpful either.
nah man, this professor gotta be the worst professor out there in scsu. he never cooperates , never listens to what one has to say. Gives tough grades. 0/10. GET SOME OTHER CLASS INSTEAD OF SOC 111!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Run. Do not take a class with this professor ever. I have gotten zero good feedback and when I ask for clarification or help, he does NOTHING. He grades harshly even though I'm only paraphrasing the book, which is pointless because I barely learn anything when I can't even have original thoughts. Never take a class with him. EVER.
He is by far the worst professor ive ever had. He gives us so little information on how to set up his papers yet he grades so harshly and constantly mentions how I don't have enough information from a certain topic but again we dont know what to write off of. I asked if he could check my paper to see if i was on the right track and he said NO, OK.
It's not that his class was hard; it was just annoying. He only graded us on four papers, which had to be 12 pages or longer, but he gave us four sentences on what he wanted the paper to look like. He then would dock heavy points off my paper because it didn't have what he was looking for, but how would I know if he never stated it to begin with?
The worst professor at SCSU. The class had 4 "exams" that were 12 page papers. He would not have a zoom meeting, but instead gave me his personal phone number. The entire phone call he screamed at me and proceeded to tell me that I can't follow directions, talked over me every time I tried to say something and eventually just hung up on me.
Doesn't provide good instructions on assignments.
Don't take unless absolutely necessary! Grades harshly. Sent an email about first paper asking how subtitles should be used. He responded telling me to look at rubric telling me 12 pages use subtitles and was told to look at another link telling to write 12 pages double spaced. Then in my feedback he gave me a D+ for not using subtitles correctly.
If you ever have the misfortune of taking a class "taught" by this "professor", I have only the greatest pity for you. One of the questions on his test, which was worth 25% of my grade, was "define the objective, and subjective of social problems". No, that's not a typo. Yes, I was docked points for getting that question wrong. No, I don't know why
This class was only hard because of the little instruction given to us. He gives poor feedback on everything even though he doesn't give in depth instructions on what he wants us to write about. All questions are open ended. Then he tells you what he wants in your paper AFTER you submit it, and he grades it.
