dedicated, tries to help and be there when you need him, best of all he demonstrates course materials with practical examples which makes his class enjoyable
Love how he clearly goes through and explains each individual step in a program. Very clear explanations
Great Prof, really looks at the class and can see when people understand. A good amount of class participation too. Personally I wouldn't buy any textbooks for Java because everything you would ever need to know can be found online.
One of the best profs I have had. Has great knowledge and always willing to help. We need more profs like him!
Great guy, clear classes, but tough exams (unless you study hard)!
Top notch!
Takes the time to explain everything very clearly. If the class isn't understanding something then he makes sure to go over it again. Over all really great prof!
Great Prof at explaining coding clearly for both classes 122 and 111 highly recommended!! Nice guy and do care about his students.
I found Prof. Mohamed to be a quite nice professor! The course was very a bit challenging, but he took the time to explain every point and repeat the explanation using a different teaching tool if he is asked about it again.
Excellent prof. I found the exams to be fair but challenging. Clicker questions are great!
Great prof. Lectures are clear, no textbook is required, and all slidesnotes are posted online. Tests are not easy but he provides you with all the topics you need to study and you'll be fine if you do some review. Will clarify anything if you ask questions about the in-class examples. Provides lots of working examples and practice questions.
Great guy. Exams were a bit hard, but you would be OK if you study hard.
One of the best. Highly recommended!
Lectures are boring, but straightforward. As long as you memorize the slides and practice the labs, you'll do fine.
Lectures were boring and much less interesting than they could have been. Was looking forward to this class and this decreased my interest in the subject
Prof. Mohamed did (and still doing) a great job. He is dedicated and it is obvious that he is trying hard to make everyone understands Java. I took cosc 111 with him, and now taking cosc 121 mainly because of him.
My favorite professor so far. He explains everything very clearly and makes sure everyone in the class understands before moving on. Pacing is good and tests are reasonable. Textbooks aren't needed.
Excellent prof. I like his class a lot. He explains things very clearly and is willing to re-explain if needed. The courses are a bit hard, but the tests are fair.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable and clear. I took both 111 and 121 with him, and would take any future course he is teaching!
Great guy. Really cares for his students. Would love to take other courses with him.
Awesome, clear, knowledgeable, nice, and fair. BIG BIG LIKE!
Abdallah dallah bills yo. Fantastic computer science prof, funny guy, great lectures, works hard and has great slides. Homework is on topic and poses a fun challenge.
Just wrote the final exam yesterday. It was challenging, but also fair and fun to work on. Started this course with almost zero Java experience, and now I feel I can apply for a junior Java programmer job. Really grateful for having Abdallah as my professor, and would definitely take others with him.
Really good prof. Very clear and organized lectures. Attend his class, do the labs, practice a lot, and you will definitely get a high grade. If you are confused with anything in class or a lab, stop by his office. He explains things very well and is extremely nice. His course made me seriously think to pursue a degree in Computer Science.
I don't think I have seen any other professors invest as much time and effort in to their assignments, notes, slides, examples and other various ways to improve the student experience. He always works hard to make things enjoyable for the class and teaches concepts at both conceptual and practical levels efficiently. Highly recommend this gem!
Abdallah is doing a very good job at teaching, made it enjoyable! He even started giving away candy today :)))
useful course, clear lectures, top-notch materials, to-the-point assignments, and overall very nice person... what else could you ask for?
Dr. Mohamed is very good at explaining coding - very clear lectures; though sometimes they can feel long. Some people find the content very challenging but in his office hours he will do an excellent job of explaining to you. Very nice guy if you get a chance to talk to him - he really cares.
Awesome professor! Not only is he a great professor who legitimately wants to see his students succeed, but he is also just a genuinely nice guy.
This class is NOT as easy as people say it is, coming from an A student with a major in psychology anyways. Abdallah is a super nice man, but sometimes goes too quickly when teaching programming, which is difficult and requires a lot of practice to be able to do the test questions as they are much more advanced than lecture and lab questions.
Abdallah is hands down the best professor I've had so far at UBC. He is always prepared for lectures, and he spends the time to make sure you understand the material. Miss the lectures and you will feel lost; be there and it will be fun to learn. If you need extra help, visit him in his office hours and, trust me, you won't regret it!!
Abdallah is definitely one of the best professors I have had so far! Such a nice guy, loves to teach and actually wants his students to learn. He won't move on until somebody asked him at least one question. His slides are good and to the point. Tells you the test format and what to study. His tests are tough but fair. Go Abdallah!
Abdallah is helpful and is definitely knowledgeable in the course material however the final exam was a bit tricky so make sure you know your way around JavaScript!
Great prof! I started taking this class with little programming experience. The prof makes sure he doesn't go too fast for people like me. The class is big (200 students), but Abdallah is doing really good job with this class.
Best prof I have had. He makes sure he is not going too fast and that the class understands. The content of the course can be boring but Abdallah keeps it interesting.
str8 up beast!
Very passionate about comp sci. He is willing to help everybody and is amazing at explaining concepts. Abdallah goes through every topic very thoroughly and makes sure people understand them. Very clear on his expectations from students and provides great guidelines for exam preparation.
Abdallah is a solid prof and a funny guy. The class is pretty easy besides JavaScript which I found a little tricky as a first year management student with zero programming experience.
Super easy. Just follow the starred slides. He let's you know exactly what you are tested on. Great guy.
I have never taken any COSC course in high school, but he was a great prof and I ended up getting 100% first term. Gives bonus points on the exams, and his powerpoints are great: thorough, yet to the point.
Abdallah is a great prof. He knows how to focus on the material that matters. He makes sure everyone in class fully understands before moving on. I had 2 classes with him so far, and I plan on taking all the other classes I can with him.
From your first pixel to the wonders of SIFT, Abdallah is a master at making sure you get the concept the first time it is explained. It's the one class I never skip because it's truly fascinating. Goes into the perfect amount of depth. COSC 445 is a must have elective for the modern computer scientist.
Abdallah is a an amazing professor. He knows how to focus on the material that matters provides amazing slides to study from. He makes sure everyone in class fully understands before moving on. I have had 2 classes with him so far, and I plan on taking all the other classes I can with him.
Abdallah makes sure everything is clear and you understand. Never skip his lectures, they are fascinating and he does an incredible job of simplifying while keeping it engaging. You learn a ton, he is the best.
Abdallah is an amazing prof that is actually interested in his students and their engage to the class.
This prof can make literally anyone learn basic programming. He's a solid choice for anyone taking programming as one of their courses.
Abdallah is a gem of a professor. He can teach any one programming and knows the course content extremely well. Just focus in class and you'll be fine.
one of the best professors!
Fantastic prof, he cares about his field and the students. He does research in education about the best ways to teach students computer science, and welcomes proper feedback. The course only teaches students the very basics of java but not how to divide and conquer problems, so a lot of practice is necessary to get a good grade. Tests are long.
He's a pretty good programmer, and he knows what he is doing. He does get somewhat defensive when someone questions what he is teaching, mostly because programming is hard, and it seems uninviting to ask questions; but he does drill it into your mind, so it works :p
abdallah is a great prof who really cares about computer science. his slides were easy to understand/learn from and his lectures were engaging. his labs were more challenging towards the end of the semester but it was doable and I learned a lot from them!
If you want to learn programming, take his COSC classes.. REALLY useful, to the point, and engaging!
Amazing prof, his love for JAVA is inspirational which makes the course a lot less difficult. He is always happy to help you with tricky concepts, and you can definitely pass this class by just paying attention in lectures and doing assignments. Java is hard, but this prof is GREAT!
He's one of the most amazing professor. I'm not good at maths or any science stuff. But his clearly explanation makes me likes coding. He is patience and would invite you to his office hour or even extra hours just to help you! Amazing prof that I recommend to everyone!
if you want to learn COSC take his course
Best prof in the uni. Excellent at teaching programming from ground up. Finishes everything in class and you don't need much practice at home. Genuinely tries to help everyone and will never condescend no matter how silly question you ask. He will also help outside office hours regarding any queries, even if it is not related to the course.
What a great prof. Gives good feedback and really wants to see his students succeed. Attend class, listen, and you'll do fine.
Very strong course and amazing prof. Lots of class activities and questions. Prof is welling to go above and beyond to make sure everyone understands the course.
My favorite course and professor by far. It is clear the professor enjoys the field, and he really made the course enjoyable.
Abdallah is a chill and nice prof man, love him much
I've taken 3 courses with Abdallah now, and everyone loves him because he really considers what his students want, and takes a very casual approach to his lectures. That being said, he will put a lot of material on his exams and give you very little to study with (ussually just his lecture notes), but overall he is a really fun prof to have.
A seriously great prof
FANTASTIC !!
Great prof
Cosc 211 is a course of very dry material, but Dr. Mohamed is a great prof that really enjoys the field and tries his best to keep the course interesting. His slides are very thorough and have all the material you will need for tests & quizzes. Highly recommend this prof!
Took COSC123 with Dr. Mohammed last year. Didn't see any reviews, thought I should write one. The course great for people with very little Computer Science background and is a really fun way to visualize what you are coding. His lectures are awesome and for someone that is a COSC major, this is an easy GPA booster!
Best prof on this campus, he's great.
Only sad thing is that he is not my instructor for COSC 111 and 121.
Really appreciates student feedback and cares about being fair to students. Exams are unfortunately much more difficult than in-class quizzes and assignments, and these don't really prepare you for them. He doesn't give a lot of practice material outside assignments either. Class isn't mandatory, but he gives very good explanations.
Very passionate about his field, a good teacher, and a fair person. One of the best professors on campus overall.
Great professor, I always try to grab any classes he's lecturing because I know it's gonna be a good time. Definitely recommend.
Stand up guy , truly cares that everyone understands the material. In a class of 300 kids, I can imagine it's quite difficult. Always reminds you that he's available if you need. With all those who have prior background in COSC, he makes sure to ground them so everyone is on the same page. Do the homework and you'll do good.
If you help even a single student his ambiguous plagiarism software will mess up your grades and he doesn't care about your grades
Doesn't explain concepts well.
Amazing professor!! Lectures are FULL of examples which is really useful in this subject. Assignments and lab questions are amazing in preparing for the tests. Notes are posted online so that yoy could follow along with the examples in class, and then write down important concepts from the notes to study for exams later.
-very solid class -very knowledgeable professor - ver clear explanation - very engaging class, often persuading students to answer -has a sense of humor -AWESOME in general! Probably the best professor I had so far.
Easy class, good prof. Not much else to say
Methodically one of the better teachers i've had. His lectures are very good. The course structure had me finishing assignments before they were taught though. I felt like I always had to be ahead of the teacher to do homework. If you attend class you'll be much better off. The course requires practise to be perfect.
i loveeeee him
Best prof I've had in my university career. Lectures are interesting and effective, labs/ exercises are helpful, and tests are fair. Wish that every prof was like him!!
The material of the course was quite difficult, however Abdallah teaches it very well.
you know he's done a good job when a good chunk of his classes end in a round of applause. He is the most passionate professor I've ever met.
One of the best prof in dealing with the current situation! 1)livestream lectures(also recorded). 2)online office hours. 2)cancelled remaining assignments + posted their solutions. 3)fair assessment measures (he is using proctorio for exam + helping us practice on the system). 4)changed his grading scheme for the benefit of students. 5)very caring.
Abdallah is amazing! Great teaching and examples, and he always encourages his students to succeed and does his best to do so. With such trying times, he keeps proving to be a great prof. It is obvious he is trying his best to help his students succeed while maintaining a reasonable amount of fairness and integrity.
Could be considered a language class. Taken for Science credits. Prof is very serious, on the ball, but totally human and reasonable. GREAT prof!
He explains concepts with examples that greatly help students who do not have any programming background to learn computer science. He also gives a lot of exercises for students to practice. I would have given him a 5 rating if he did not teach in a very fast pace, trying to squeeze all the material in a summer course.
Dr Abdallah Mohamed is the best possible professor anybody could have. He is very helpful and gives a lot of feedback. He explains concepts clearly and he does everything in his power to make sure nobody faces any difficulties, especially in the online environment where technical difficulties are common place. Best prof ever. Thank you Dr Mohamed!
Consistent lectures and light hearted. Easy to pay attention to.
Really great prof. Any problem I had with the class was because of my classmates. He did his best to accommodate the changes from in-person to online. He really put effort into his lectures and explained on-topic questions well. I'm taking COSC 121 with him next term.
The professor is very good at explaining the concepts of Java and helps us understand the logic behind every code!
Lectures are detailed and clear with zero assumptions of prior knowledge of coding. Issues are resolved quickly and fairly. Restrictions on coding methods are extremely rare so if you do have experience coding with the language taught you won't be penalized for using techniques not taught in class. Overall, this is a well-taught course.
Great professor! Explains concepts really clearly.
Lectures are great and in-depth. The assignments were fairly easy. However, the problem with this course is the exams. The exams don't test one's programming skills properly . The questions were not particularly hard however a project or something along those lines would've been better suited for this course.
Professor Mohamed explained every single concept super clearly and provided more than enough practice to help solidify the learning of the concepts. He was very fair with grading and made sure to accommodate students due to the pandemic. A very caring professor who I can't recommend enough.
He uses a blend of live and recorded lectures. He does explain concepts clearly, and tells you what to expect for tests. He gives you optional readings from the text book. He gives you lots of practice in the assignments. The 2 midterms are fair, the final is too long, and I didn't have enough time to finish the questions.
Prof. Abdallah is an amazing lecturer and I cannot emphasize enough on his teaching style. His blended teaching style with the online system is incredible. He is very caring and accommodates to the difficulties we face very well. His marking is fair and is straight up the best prof ever.
Abdallah is a fair marker and a phenomenal lecturer. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the courses I have had with him.
He answers all our questions although sometimes they were basic questions. The tests were okay but very limited time, so we had to practice to get used to it. Solid professor.
Do the work and you'll be fine.
The best CS prof around!
Dr. Mohammed is very knowledgeable and very patient when it comes to teaching. If you have any idea about programming (especially Java) you will be more than fine. If you don't he will make sure you will learn the concepts well. He encourages questions and discussions, and does not punish you going ahead on your own. A+ for Absolute chad.
Dr. Abdallah is the best computer science professor I have ever had. He taught java in a very easy manner and his lecture slides are super easy to understand. If you studied the course material outside of class, the exam papers are easy to attempt. He gives out assignments every week which makes you grasp the concepts easily. Do take his class!!
He once went to each section of the lecture hall and told the students to nod if they didn't understand the content. He makes sure that all of his students are comfortable with the content. As long as you are willing to learn you won't fail his class. He is a model professor.
Dr. Abdallah is an excellent CS prof, he is an amazing teacher and explains Java clearly, albeit very slowly as this is an introductory course. However, be prepared for hard exams as you need to write down code on paper, closed book and no IDE, which doesn't make sense at all. This can pull your grade down as the papers are consistently hard.
Abdallah is a true gem. Came in with zero coding knowledge in Java came out feeling refreshed having learned a lot! Amazing prof who cares that you understand what hes teaching. Makes sure hes not going too fast and is encouraging. A true model prof and person. The midterms arent bad but the final was super long imo and quite challenging to me.
He's so good at teaching. I love his lectures
Top quality professor, simple as that. Beware of the midterms/finals though as they are on paper which I personally disagree with but I can see the pros in it.
Abdallah is a gem, he is an amazing prof and explains concepts clearly, and his lecture slides are very informative. He is very approachable as well. However, his exams are really difficult so get ready to study everything in detail to get a respectable grade. Beware, his coding exams (midterms+finals) are on paper which I really don't like.
He's a nice guy and you can tell he really wants everyone in his class to learn and succeed. Assignments follow the lecture material pretty closely, and same with tests. No curveballs, the exams are fair. As long as you keep up with the material you'll do fine.
Abdallah might be my favorite professor yet. He made machine architecture, which I expected to be pretty dry, a genuinely fun class. His lectures were too fast for me to take notes, but he had such good explanations that everything just made sense to me. Towards the end of the term, I actually felt excited for upcoming lectures.
There is a reason why we call him Abdala Bae
Abdallah is such a caring prof who genuinely wants to see everyone succeed. The course, while more involved than 111, I got a lot out of it to the point where I think with greater efficiency & logic. His midterms are fair and the final I found slightly tougher & long. Beware the multiple-choice, make sure you pay close attention! ABSOLUTE GEM
This was a difficult class because of the content. There's this q about the Tower of Hanoi in an assignment that was painful and imo slightly unnecessary, but the TAs were very helpful, shoutout to Aashish for being amazing! It's a tricky course and you will have to work for your grade, but the professor is fair and encourages class discussions.
While I found this class to be quite a step up compared to 111, Abdallah's lectures were quite engaging and this definitely helped me learn the material better. He gives clear instructions, coding examples and is always willing to answer questions in class. I found his midterms and final very fair despite needing to be written on paper.
God I wish he taught more classes.
Love him
The Goat. His exams are tricky as he likes to throw in some random syntax/logic errors which are difficult to find, but they're are very fair exams. The final this year was the hardest one I took, and everyone spent around 2 and a half hours on it however the class average was close to an A-
Great prof, one of the only good professors in the COSC department. Hard exams and material, but you will really lean a lot and enjoy his courses
This is the third course I am taking with Dr.Abdallah and he is a gem. He teaches everything in such a way that you will be able to understand everything, and he is really passionate about his work. He wants every student to succeed and he WILL help you if you are going through a tough time in your life by extra office hours/waiving stuff if needed
Best professor in the institution, amazing lecture, he clearly care for his students
Abdallah is truly one of a kind. You learn so much in his lectures and he genuinely cares. The exams are tough but fair. I took 3 of his classes (111,121, and 211) so far and I truly can't recommend him enough. The labs are also fair, but definitely asks TAs for help. BEST CS PROF!!
Lifechanging would be an understatement. Made me glad that I chose to major in computer science.
overrated, very boring and really unfair exams, so exhausting his lectures.
Amazing lectures. Tough exams, but he prepares you for them.
Dr. Mohamed is amazing! The final exam was certainly tough, but I did not feel overwhelmed or unprepared. Dr. Mohamed's dedication to his students and to the course was evident in every lecture. I can't recommend him highly enough!
Perfect example of what a professor should be. Beautiful explanations and examples in lectures, very fast marking. Best part is that he understands that markers make mistakes, and gives marks back if you find errors in the marking. Make sure to check over your midterms and final for correctness in marking.
One of the best COSC profs I've had. Really enjoyed his lectures. He was very clear what was expected on the exams and always took extra time to explain concepts that were confusing.
Mohamed is an incredible professor with very engaging lectures and a kind personality.
Abdallah allows exam viewing & fixes grading errors. During final exam viewing this year, most grades didn't change, but some got extra marks & others LOST marks. I am not saying this negatively as it was evident he wanted to be fair, but I just wanted to add a note of caution for those who may have read the other review about checking their exams
Another great course I have taken with Dr. Mohamed! One of the best.
This was my third class with Prof Mohamed and have enjoyed all of them.
Dr. Mohammed is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He paces his lectures according to class feedback and explains concepts extremely clearly. The course itself isn't too hard, but our class averages weren't amazing on the second midterm
Dr. Mohamed is extremely knowledgable and caring. Will always help you will a problem if you come to him after class. Easily my favourite prof I've had this semester. If you can, take 111 with him.
Amazing prof and lecturer. Also, coming to his office hours showed me how caring he was for the quality of his courses and for your learning. He's incredible at gauging how well students understand what he's teaching, and slowing down if necessary. At the same time, his explanations are great. I took COSC 111 & 121 with him.
Perfect professor
Abdallah is a fantastic prof, take his class if you can.
He's a great lecturer, writes code in class as he explains the concept, so you understand why he's doing what he's doing and how to do it yourself for the assignments. Tests aren't "easy" but they're not unreasonably difficult, you just need to learn the material and they become straightforward, with bonus q's. It helps if you're interested in it.
I just completed COSC111 with Dr. Mohamed so I have not received a final grade. I wanted to keep this as unbiased as possible. He has great lecture slides and paces well. He stops frequently to ask if we have any questions which is very helpful. His exams are not super difficult. He also provides lots of prep material to study which is helpful.
Professor Abdallah helped sparked my love for problem-solving like no one else. Even after taking computer science courses at U of T and UBCV, I can say that none compare to his exceptional teaching and energy, no kidding. I'd swim across a river to take his classes. Truly amazing.
Challenging but rewarding class with a prof who really cares. Definitely attend lectures - they're crucial. Also, check out unstuck study for helpful study tools.
everything is soooooooooo rushed.!!!
This course is tough, but Abdallah is seriously an amazing instructor. What stands out is how genuine he is; it's clear his main priority is for students to learn and succeed, not just strictly following the syllabus. He adjusts the pace and content of lectures based on how well the class doing.Honestly, getting him for this course felt like a win
Great professor and good guy, very clear and concise. Funny guy too, good feedback and good teacher. A++
Very interactive lectures, lots of clickers but you only need to get 80% for the full mark. Really helps you understand the content, and curves Quizes/midterms.
Excellent teaching, detailed slides with questions similar to exam. Slowed down pace so class can understand, First quiz was challenging but rest was doable (plus other than final everything got curved). Gave bonus assignments to boost up grade, available in OH and genuinely wants you understand concepts. One of best prof's, wish had him for 111.
Coolest prof ever, super chill and very accessible. Pretty decently challenging class, but hes a great teacher and helps you though alot. I recommend him heavily, and his assignments were fair and the course material was EXTREMELY well laid out, and organized. very good!
His lectures are so dry, he goes way too fast for a 1st year cs class, final exam was very hard, stuff he barely mentioned came on tests/exam.
He's an ok professor but I'm very indifferent to his particular style of teaching. Lectures felt very messy and disorganised.
Highly recommend! His lectures are super organized and the pacing is spot on. The live coding is a total game changer for learning the material. He also has a great sense of humor!
Really great professor. He paces the lectures perfectly and explains the programming concepts through live coding and visual diagrams. The way he breaks down memory models makes the material much less confusing. He is also very funny
