I took his course at George Brown and he is amazing! Very passionate about what he teaches, very friendly and good sense of humour. He is very knowledgeable about the material! The assignments and tests aren't easy, but if you put enough work and effort into them you'll do very well! (-) He's not very specific about assignment/presentation details.
Had him for 3 courses in my immigrant and refugee SSW Program @Seneca....Love him! He loves his job, is extreamly knowledgable in the field, provides references, is helpful, flexible, and accomodating if you prove to work hard. He is tho very much a prof who expects you to be in class...Mr. Gilzay definetly enriched my learn ing expereince @ Seneca
Abdul is great, he is there for his students and very knowledgeable. Abdul filled in for our prof halfway through the semester and I can honestly say he made the course much more interesting.
Classes are funny until the marking the assignments. Hardmarker.
He is one of the most entertaining, engaging smart professors I have had. He really creates assignments that are useful beyond the classroom and he has unique, insightful ideas. The only negative would be that he rarely references textbooks or readings - fortunately, with this particular course, there was no exam so that didn't matter much.
Best prof I had at ryerson. Very approachable and helpful. overall an amazing learning experience.
Excellent prof, very knowledgeable, genuinely cares about his students. Can make any topic super interesting so funny as well. If you require any help or need flexibiliy in terms of assignments he is very understanding. Always puts the needs of students first. Highly reccomend him if you genuinely care about social work
THE BEST BEST BEST PROF YOU WILL EVER HAVE! he is SO SO knowledgeable i cant explain, i am usually not the type to get interested in school courses, but ONLY HIS lectures are the BEST. i would definitely recommend him for everyone. u will learn a lot .
He is very good professor with hands on experience in working with various underprivileged communities in Canada.
Abdul is great. He's clear but his exams can be confusing. He's hella funny and class with him is never boring. He's nice and helpful and everything you want in a prof. I highly recommend him and would want him again.
Abdul taught at Seneca as a part time prof in the social services program. Had him for placement. Hilarious prof with a great sense of humor and teaches us about agency policy and ethical dilemma decision making. Some what a tough grader but fair in a sense. Definitely would like to have him again and he cares a lot for his students.
I had Abdul a couple of times and I have to say, he is one of my favourite professors in the Social Work program. His lectures are short and to the point, very easy going and brings many real-life experiences in the classroom. Abdul rocks!
He's a great guy with lots of experience. He is very passionate about his work and this shows in his lectures. A bonus is that he's also a very fair grader. He's fantastic!
Sweet man, disorganized lecturer. Posts PowerPoints that he doesn't use in class so they're basically useless. Test questions are pretty easy, and he's an easy marker on the essay.
Loved Abdul. He was slightly unorganized but he always taught us the most relevant and important information for exams and papers. There was a required textbook and readings, however you didn't need to read them as long as you go to the lectures and take notes. He does a lot of "nudge nudge hint hint" stuff in referring to exams and tests.
He's awesome. He rambles, but in his ramblings, he repeats what you need to know. Repetition helps a lot! He cares a lot about the students, and asks for feedback on how he's doing often. He meets you halfway, you have to be willing to meet him there, too. The smaller tests are confusing, but the final and paper will be your saving grace. 10/10
Abdul is a pleasant person and very caring. You will need to do readings and review prior to any test as there's quite a lot of material and concepts that are not common knowledge. Sometimes he gets excited and jumps around and his train of thought becomes hard to follow but if you tell him he'll fix it. Wants the best for everyone.
he acts like an easy marker but he isnt. he is very kind but unorganized. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, MINE HAS DUST ON IT ITS NOT NEEDED
Very caring. I found him to be an easy marker. Gave very practical and useful information. I would take another class with Abdul
Love Abdul. He is very funny and cares very much for his students. He shares a lot of personal stories in class which is very helpful and makes him very approachable. I loved his enthusiasm but he can be a little all over the place at times. GO TO CLASS! very important!
Abdul Gilzay is the reason why I want to pursue social policy-- he's passionate, inspiring and really cares about his students. Social policy is naturally a very dry class, but he uses entertaining examples and gives you all the tools you need to do well. Keep on the readings and don't be afraid ti ask him if you need clarification!
Abdul Gilzay is truly my favourite prof at Ryerson. His lectures are amazing, he is very engaging and really makes sense when lecturing. It is evident he really cares about his students and wants them to pass. 100% would take a class with him again!
Going into policy class, I was nervous that it was going to be boring and hard, however, Abdul made me interested in policy. He gives lots of examples that help you make connections to real life which helps you understand the content much better, and keeps you engaged. He barely uses PowerPoint that much so be ready to learn by listening to him.
Abdul has a big heart and really cares about his students. His lectures can get a little jumbled, but he always prepares his students for the exam. He is the only prof that can make policy fun!
cares about everyone, amazing lectures, will go over anything with you, easy marker, wants all to pass. interesting social policy. best social work prof. at ryerson
Abdul is very knowledgeable and caring. He lectures in a different way but easy to understand.
Abdul is an incredible professor. He is passionate, knowlegeable, and witty and encourages you to think critically and be engaged in the material. He is one of my favourite professors!
Abdul is an amazing individual. Truly passionate about social work and his students! He is encouraging, positive, and enables students to think critically.
He is the best. He makes effort to make class enjoyable with his jokes, he cares about you succeeding and he will always help you no matter what. This is the kind of prof that is meant to be a teacher, I have had him for two semesters and no one can match his character. THE BEST PROF!!! EASY A. HE JUST UNDERSTANDS THE STRUGGLES OF A STUDENT.
He's a great prof. I really enjoyed going to all of his classes.
Abdul is the best professor I ever had, honestly the most encouraging person. He always tries to make everyone feel smart and is open to criticism and help. He genuinely cares about his students, and he always makes sure that everyone understands course concepts. Unlike most exams, his is very straight-forward.
Some teachers like to teach concepts that will never appear on your exam, Abdul however, only teaches you what you NEED to know. Amazing prof, hope he teaches more course next semester.
No in-depth knowledge
Abdul is honestly one of the best professors I've had so far! Social policy can be a bit boring and dry but he does everything he can to make it interesting. It's important to show up to class since he gives out lots of helpful hints for the tests and assignments.
This professor is an absolute gem. He really cares about his students. 2 tests and a final, 1 assignment. Easy marker and gives you hints on what might show up on the exam. Would highly recommend.
Prof straight up tells you what's going to be on the test. Lecture clears up what concepts are important that you can't really find in the textbook (not much use beyond tables) Tests are very straight forward: defining key concepts/ideas in short+long answer format, and multiple choice. One major paper, but it's an easy A if you follow the steps.
I loved SWP 302! Social Policy can be boring but he made it interesting because he is so passionate. The class is lecture heavy because most (if not all) the content will be on the tests/final exam and he gives very helpful hints. So skipping will result in a poor grade but if you show up, pay attention, and take good notes youll be fine :)
knowledgable
the best! social policy can be a challenging class; however, he breaks it down so it is easy to understand! When it comes time for tests and assignments he makes sure you are well prepared! if possible, take his classes!
Cannot say enough good things about Prof. Gilzay. He tells you what to expect for the exam and tests; you truly can enjoy the lectures, take good notes, and take in all the information. I had him second year and his teachings have been beneficial to me in my current classes. If you're taking social policy, you MUST take his class!!!
Abdul was one of the proffs I had in second year, she honestly is such an inspirational and energetic person. HE has a wealth of knowledge and his story is unreal! He is really passionate about the work he does and he loves creative minds, be creative and you'll impress him. course was really easy especially coming from college and common sense
nothing more than an angel, he totally made the class much easier during covid, easy-going and willing to answer all questions.. he helped me so much and I can easily say the best prof I've had in Ryerson. MUST TAKE
Abdul was a very understanding and caring professor. His lectures were inspirational and his personal stories were great. However, his assignment criteria could be confusing at times, assignments outlines tended to be vague. Overall, a good prof, but you just need to ask a ton of questions sometimes to clarify things. Assignments didnt take long.
The assignment instructions were so confusing and he doesn't clearly state what we are supposed to do for them. On the last assignment he made us just follow the rubric and he contradicted himself so many times when I asked him what I was supposed to do. He also lowered the classes grade on an assignment and I had to email him to change mine back.
I have had the pleasure of getting Abdul for 3 classes. He is a phenomenal teacher, probably my favourite at Ryerson. He is kind, knowledgable, and inspirational. If you are confused about an assignment, go to office hours and he will give you direction to do well. Do not pass up a class with Abdul.
Abdul is one of my favourite profs at Ryerson. This is my second time having him, and I'm hoping I can also take another class with him in the fall. He is passionate, caring, and genuinely loves teaching. Policy in general is pretty boring but Abdul knows exactly how to make it interesting and engaging. Such a good prof, highly recommended.
Abdul is a kind professor; however, he is very unorganized and gives unclear/confusing feedback on assignments. I suggest emailing him as much as you can and sticking to the syllabus when it comes to assignments (as the assignment sheets are usually inaccurate in some way. He marks fairly.
Abdul is the best! He's hilarious and makes the class enjoyable. I had him as a prof for both social policy in 3rd and 4th year social work. He hints at what will be on the test during class so it's best to attend! He cares about his students and explains assignments clearly. You'll love social policy class with this prof!
Abdul is a good person but he is not a great professor for the way I learn. He does not provide clear instructions whatsoever. Don't bother emailing him because he takes forever to reply and doesn't even answer your questions. His grading takes forever, but he grades fairly easily. Also don't challenge what he says because he will shut it down.
You can tell that he is really passionate about teaching and is knowledgeable within his field. During lecture the material is easily accessible and summarized.
literally one of the most understanding profs and the kindest person you'll meet. i've had him two years in a row and each time there was only three papers to write. his class discussions are thoughtful and respectful and they're not a hardship to sit through. really cares about his students. i hope i get to experience his class in person one day!!
Makes the concepts very easy to understand, very clear on what he wants in the assignments, my favourite professor of the semester
This was an easy class and easy grade to get but when it comes to him giving instructions, its an absolute mess. His rubrics are so vague and confusing that students have to remind him to give clear instructions. I would take another class with Abdul just for the grades but he is not a great instructor. It will be better off choosing another prof.
At first I was very hesitant of having a policy class but Abdul did not make it boating as much as people say. He is very informative and hilarious. There were three exams which he then only chooses two of the best marks. In addition, there are the two webquests which were only easy topics but were marked harshly. I would take Abdul again.
I loved this class. I learned so much about power, resistance and change. Grading was fair and had clear grading criteria. The ta was an absolute sweetheart and I adored her. Abdul was amazing and were knowledgeable about the material he was presenting. Cant wait to have him again in the future!!
More than half of this course's grade is based on group projects. Luckily I had a decent one but be warned However, prof is great at communicating what he is looking for, class discussions and lectures were interesting, and is generous with feedback, grading, and extensions if you put in the effort Second time having him and he remains my favourite
Amazing prof!
I took his course last year. He teaches clearly and to the point in his lectures. His feedback on the assignments doesn't always match with the grading criteria. Marks hard.
I do not understand people who rated him with a low grade. He is very approachable and understanding. He has worked in this field and has thought social work for more than 10 years. He really is an expert in his field and has a broad understanding. Apart from being an amazing prof, he is a good person. He is very caring and understanding.
Love Abdul! This was the fourth time I had him during the 2021-2022 academic year. He is nice and willing to help you out. I had concerns over my assignments and he was willing to change the marks. Therefore, I will keep on trying to get Abdul because he is amazing! Fair and easy prof overall compared to other profs!!
One of the best professors in the social work department, you actually will come out of his class and retain so much knowledge because of how well he lectures. He's so kind and funny, and genuinely cares about you passing and doing amazing in his class. However, if you don't go to class you'll likely not pass or end up with a poor grade.
I am in Abdul's class right now, and it is always a pleasure having him. He is one of the best social work profs at TMU. He is a fair marker, however, you have to be clear on what you write in the paper. I highly suggest getting a class with him.
A very nice profession. Caring, empowering, and opening.
One of the best professors I've had to date. Really encourages students to dig deep in written assignments and class discussions. A fair grader who gives very constructive feedback when grading. Hope to have a class with Abdul in the future.!
Always a pleasure having Abdul!! Such a nice and caring instructor!! Highly suggest taking a class with him!!
Professor Gilzay is a great professor and wants you to succeed, you should take him if you have the opportunity. His lectures are not mandatory, but they can be helpful for information on what will be on the quizzes. The quizzes and assignment were fairly easy, most of the tested material is from lecture PowerPoints and the textbook.
Prof Abdul is great at teaching the material but sometimes gets off topic meaning some important topics that will be on the exam/quizzes are not well covered and you have to rely on your own readings / textbook to understand the concepts well. If you want to talk to him, best do it in class and in person, he is a bit short in emails.
Professor Gilzay was such an amazing prof. Three hour long lectures suck, but the way he explains the content is genuinely interesting. I'm doing my best to try and get him again for any classes I can. For this class, we had 1 assignment and 3 quizzes, which were relatively easy as long as you studied what he outlines in the test reviews.
Amazing prof! Although attending the lectures is not mandatory, I highly recommend doing so because he is very entertaining and really makes the content come alive.
Such an engaging prof. Really cares about what he is teaching and loves interacting with students within the classroom.
Prof. Abdul is the best! He has great teaching methods and is very engaging. He was meant to teach. You can learn things that will stay with you forever. Prof. Abdul is not only great at teaching he is also a great person and wants you to do great. I would 100% recommend him!
I LOVED THIS PROFESSOR! He is incredible and very passionate about the social work field. I would highly recommend him!
Professor Abdul is a skillful teacher. He delivers amazing lectures that are engaging, that make you think critically, and inspire you to participate. He brings class concepts alive. He is also very supportive, making sure you understand assignments and have the tools to do well on them. One of the best profs at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Professor Gilzay was great! Three hours of social policy can be boring but he makes it interesting, he gives breaks when the class seems checked out. He does a great job of making otherwise dull content incredibly interesting. Attend classes as he gives hints for the exams within them. Exams are easy online and easy if you take notes during class!
Abdul is a nice person who is great at listening and stimulating conversation. However, I learned little and had to play catch up in the next semester because specific course content discussion was lacking, and instead let students go on tangents. His marking makes no sense and was corrected multiple times because he did not read it properly.
His grading papers were challenging, and his responses were confusing. He never added anything encouraging. His comments on my papers were like it's confusing to him or he's confused. His lectures are boring. He constantly changes what he says about assignments and the in-class test. I would not take his classes unless I had no other choice.
Abdul is nice, but I did not enjoy his class. -Does not cover required content in class. -Is disorganized -Does not moderate discussions well -Responds promptly but unclearly to emails; have to follow up multiple times for clarification -Assignment feedback is unclear and sometimes unrelated to the assignment, as if for another student's work.
very nice as a prof. but kinda boring lectures. 3 online quizzes, MC or T/F or matching, very easy. and 1 webquest (word requirement so short, like 400 words). stopped attending lectures halfway through. he's a little all over the place in lect. he also will make u go into groups and share w the class some qs related to policy.
Didn't agree with the mark his TA gave on the web quest, web-quest word-count MAX was too short, so you might end up having to remove stuff, then lose marks cuz you removed it even though u took it off cuz of the word count, its a catch 22. He's okay overall, his quizzes are very hard tho even tho theyre online, dont be fooled, study.
Great prof, great class discussions (sometimes go off tangents though). Very approachable and flexible. Easy marker but sometimes his feedback doesn't match the grade you get. Group project which is pre-determined which is worth a lot of your mark. Exam is a bit tricky.
I really liked this prof but the TA gave me a bad mark (80%) on the webquest even though I answered the questions thoroughly. I don't understand what else I could have written when the word count is so tiny. I was very mad about that and the professor wouldn't change my mark, but the quizzes are not hard, esp if you attend class.
He simply is the best. Abdul has lots of experience in the field and all of his stories have something that makes students laugh and enjoy. He effectively gives constructive criticism and knows how hard it may be for students when doing practicals.
best prof ever! would recommend to anyone and everyone - incredible lectures that are so thorough and inspiring, incorporates lived experience and current world events, not afraid to speak his mind, caring and accommodating, easy to reach, helpful, kind - all quizzes are online and straightforward, great class and prof that I would encourage!!!!!!!
Honestly, his lectures are decent and in person; sometimes, the conversions during class were enjoyable; however, he's incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful when replying to inquiries or problems through email. He doesn't acknowledge when he messes up and blames the student. He forgot to include a grade in my finals and is refusing to fix it.
Disorganized in class discussions, and it not great at keeping the conversation on track. Course outline doesn't usually line up with due dates or D2L dates. In my opinion, is not very accommodation friendly. Both times I requested extra support as outlined in my AAS plan, I received rude responses telling me to basically try harder as a student.
One of the best professors at Tmu! Very caring and flexible. Love the discussions in class. Straightforward assignments and fair grading. I would absolutely take his course again. Great person and professor!
This has been one of the most enjoyable and inspiring courses I've taken at TMU. The professor is exceptionally caring, engaging, and passionate about the subject matter. I truly appreciate the supportive learning environment he created—by far the best professor I've had at TMU.
Extremely nice professor. Had him for three classes. Take him if you want an (almost guaranteed) A, but don't take if you really expect to learn. Never really goes over any readings or class content, sort of just lets students complain about their lives/program/society for three hours and facilitates the discussions they have with themselves lol.
Makes lectures interesting, explains things well, gives hints on tests (which were all online tests, no lockdown browser). As long as you take notes when he speaks, since he gives lots of hints, and look over the slides, tests should be easy. There was a required textbooks, but I didn't buy it.
The professor is nice & funny. The course was easy but hard as he is strict at marking, the work is worth a lot and if you do bad you have no more chances do get better marks. The lectures are necessary to attend, he keeps you engaged by the stories but if you do the readings you will understand the course better.
He's a pretty good prof, but the lectures (3 hours) were honestly useless. We just had random discussions in class and BARELY covered the lecture slides. He's a hard marker but not that bad. He sometimes doesn't really understand what you're asking, which is an issue sometimes. Overall, would take it again if he were the only prof teaching it.
Abdul was great in this class. He clearly cares about teaching. He goes off topic sometimes but makes sure to connect to the topic theme. Will often connect his personal experiences as a social worker to the course content. Easy to reach via email with fast responses.
Was a great experience with Abdul. Gives excellent exam review and is easy to reach if you have any questions. Fair grader. Informative lectures. Values humor which I appreciated.
Abdul is a really sweet, funny man, and he actually had a passion for his lectures. Prepare to do a LOT of reading, because the lectures are based on that (you'd be lost without it). The final was hard because it was multiple choice but overall he's a good professor.
