Hard to understand, dry humor,READ THE BOOK!
Hes a nice guy, but hes not very clear in his lectures. You almost never know what will be on the test. Seems disorganized.
You will never have any idea whats going to be on the test.
The worst professor I have ever had, can't speak english, very hard tests
horrible horrible horrible, i am currently in his class and have noooooooooo idea what is going on!
This guy may be the biggest a-hole ever. I once had to miss class for a funeral and asked to see if there were chapters I could read. Dewan:"I can not offer any assistance beyond what is described in the sylabus" i.e. miss class for any reason=n
After 4 years and 10 Econ classes, I can truly say this guy is the biggest a-hole I have ever encountered. I'm not saying this as revenge for a bad grade because i somehow got an A. He is just very arrogant and not helpful in any way shape or form.
If your one of those students who doesn't do anything outside of class, and doesn't know anything about economics, or basic math, then i can see how you wouldn't like him. But I'm not an idiot, i think he's hilarious, and thats why i think hes pretty good
Dewan does have a dry humor, it comes when you least expect it and he's hilarious. Dewan is also very fair, he writes everything he says on the board. If you quickly preveiw your notes from the previous lecture before class you will b anwering questions.
The worst teacher i have ever had here at EMU! Very hard to understand, and seems like if you don't Econ you are a retard. I would strongly suggest not taking this teacher for this course.
probably the worst professor i ever had. not clear on anything he discusses. he is aweful, do not take him
This professor is a horrid beast. He misprinted one of the tests without the last page, then deducted all the points from my score because of his mistake, then refused to allow me to retake the section. He is arrogant about pitiful things, constantly makes errors in his lectures and is very unreasonable. If you like these qualities take his class!
HE SUCKS!!!
Just dont do it.
This teacher is horrible. You can't understand him, his notes are extremely unorganized. He writes wrong info on the board. The only way I got through the class was from the study guide question. The only plus side is he does crack jokes that are so crazy they are funny.

Nope!
This guy sucks something awful. Little to no help if you ask questions and makes you feel like crap if you ask the wrong ones. If you don't get Macroeconomics then don't take him. If you do, take him, learn the study guide and don't pay attention to him. Don't buy the book either, I opened it ONCE to get my "A"
He's hard to understand. He asks if anyone has questions, and then doesn't really want to answer them. To pass his tests, study the study guides he gives you. The questions on the tests are pretty much word for word from the study guides. You will not learn anything, but you can still pass fairly eaisly.
funny as hell i had a ball in his class
Not as hard to understand as others say. Needs better structure to his lectures. Once you get past the first three or four weeks of background stuff, as long as you know basic math you are okay. Tests are easy also 25 multiple choice, no essays, no papers
the class itself is fine but this guy.... wow! he is a terrible teacher... his lecture is not really structured and he makes it a point to ask for questions. However, makes you feel like an idiot for asking and then never really answers.so Good Luck!
Dewan is a terrible professor. While most of the time he is understandable, he sometimes speaks unclear. Then when you ask him what he says he acts all condescending. If you have a choice, take this class with a different professor.
NOOOO!!! Thats all I can say!!
Sometimes difficult to understand. I only needed the book when I couldn't understand something he said. Otherwise, his lectures, plus the quizzes and practice problems were all I needed to pass the exams. I can't say I learned all that much, but the class was relatively easy as long as you showed up consistently.

I thought he was a great professor. He made his points, followed along with the book...the test questions came strictly from the chapter questions he gave us every week, if you did the weekly homework, you had already taken the test!
I wouldn't recommend him but I wouldn't avoid him if the class fits into your schedule. His grading is easy, he gives you study questions, which are a majority of the tests. He writes a lot on the bored so take notes. He can be hard to understand, and doesn't always answer questions.
He is a little hard to understand with his accent and relaxed way of speaking, but he makes Economics fun and interesting.
I liked him a lot I thought that he was a good professor! FUNNY GUY.. when you get him going!!
Classes are insufferable. Lame remarks about how we students spend too much money on hashish. Dewan's true love is banking & money. He will make you suffer in Macroeconomics. As he was handing out our final exam he said these words of encouragement: "If you fail this exam, if you fail my class, do not retake this course with me." A real sweetheart.
I thought he was a very good professor. He gave the class every opportunity to get an A. Allowed students who did not do well on exam 1 to replace it with exam #2 grade. All you had to do was take good notes and study the study guide that e provided and you will learn a lot and do well. Gives extra credit for coming to class.
He has high standards, but pay attention and ALWAYS show up to class. He will remember you if you do. Book use is low/non-existant. His teaching style is to use the chalk board, but he has a great sense of humor if you give him a chance. I'm taking him for another class. Highly recommended.
He is a good professor if you already have some background knowledge in the subject. If not then I would not take him. He is also very unhelpful.
Easy class. Took it in the summer. Would have him again in 202 once the time comes.
I could not understand anything he says. He does not answer questions to full extent. The books helps very much. His math is also very poor, makes mistakes in simple problems. I would not recommend him.
My backgound is Elecronics engg but prof Dewan's teachning style helped me to easily complete my Macroeconomics class.
This class was all over the place. There was supposed to be 3 exams, 3 surprise quizzes, and attendance points according to the syllabus. There ended up being 3 exams, 1 quiz, and another quiz that was "supposed" to count for extra credit. Hard to understand, notes are all over the place, do not recommend as a professor.
I love you Abdullah. Is willing to help those who come to class. Gives sample questions that are exactly what is on exam. Can be very hard to understand at times, but writes EVERYTHING on the board. Also has a cute sense of humor. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
i can't stand this guy, he's a terrible prof. can't understand him, stupid assignments, i hate this class
I couldn't easily understand what he was saying during class. It was frustrating especially if I wasn't grasping a concept. I mainly relied on the book to teach me what I needed to know. Tests weren't TOO hard, however you definitely should like reading if you take w/ this professor.
You never know what to expect when you come to class. He does not follow the syllabus. He lets other students do problems on the board and its not explained well. If you go to Dewan he will tell you that he went over everything in class. He is the most unorganized professor I have ever had. He is never ready for class and seems to be lost.
After three full time years at EMU I have finally found the most useless professor there. I attended all of his classes, but learned nothing from him. I was happy to at least have a econ book to read, but the syllabus was not followed anyway. His strange sense of humor gets old after realizing his class is a waste of time and money. DO NOT TAKE!!!
He'f funny if you can understand what hes saying. he likes to teach but he gets lost in his own lectures sometimes. the book is usless if you go to class every day. his tests are hard but he curves it some. no homework and pop quizes that he usually announces in the class befor he gives it.
I really liked Professor Dewan. For each chapter he gives a packet of sample questions and then puts some of those very same questions on the tests. You do need to do some reading on your own though, but as long as you do that and go to class every time you should be fine!
English a slight issue at times. The material is a bit boring. Still, this class is not hard. He practically hands out the tests in the study sheets he gives you to use. Goes over material in detail in class. Not a difficult A
Hardly speaks english, refuses to explain anything, actually lost my exam and said that there was no proof that I was there that day, so too bad for me. He is all over the place, and often would write things on the board and have them corrected by students. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Worst professor I've ever had!!! I couldn't understand a word he said in class and he was rude to students. He even lied to us, stating he would provide formulas for the exam. Come exam time, he claimed he never said that. Even though the entire class heard him!!!! I will change universities before I ever take another class with him.
Great professor. If you go to class, pay attention and do the study guides that he gives out you will get an A. 90% of his exams come directly from the study guide. He is a little hard to understand at first but he does slow down if you ask.
Never know what to expect from this guy, its really annoying. Never know what to have read before class because he is all over the place. How absurd is supplemental instruction for Econ 202? Tells me he is not doing a good job teaching.
worst teacher ive ever had in my life!
He is a horrible teacher, and just a mean person in general. He would embarrass people who asked questions and refused to explain things. You can't read a word he writes on the board. He is one of the worst professors I have ever had, and DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM IN THE LEAST. Don't take him unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Not as bad as the previous ratings seem. Attendance not mandatory but he will be much more willing to help you if you go to class. He is a bit disorganized at times and contradicts himself at times, but he does do things to make the class easier (take home midterm). If you do not seem to care about the class, he will be much harder on you.
not good. bad english, bad handwriting, and ALOT OF ATTITUDE. he tells us to ask questions but when we do he makes everyone feel dumb. when he doesn't give out study guides the test are pretty hard. It's possible to pass but if you can avoid him you should.
Very upsetting I took his final well prepared and forgot my student ID number. He then called me a baby and said I was going to get a zero- meaning my entire grade hinged on memorizing an 8 or 9 digit number. He then proceeded to accuse me of taking the test for someone else as if knowing my ID number would prove that I wasn't doing so. Not nice.
At first he is hard to understand, you really have to pay attention in this class to understand the material. Prof. Dewan is not likeable at first, but once you get to know him better, he has a good sense of humor an will be happy to help you if you always attend class
He has a very, very thick accent, and he gets mad at students when they ask him to repeat himself. He also mocks, insults, and threatens students. He also gives poor feedback and unclear lectures. Take him if you're looking for a challenge both academically and emotionally.
Great prof. Lectures were clear, expectations were laid out. He's got a sarcastic sense of humor, get used to it! 100% lecture based, and if you pay attention and use his study materials you'll get an A. Ignore all the comments by people who skipped class and like to complain.
Not a good teacher. Doesn't clearly explain his expectations from you, or his tests for that matter. We had two in-class tests and one brutally hard take-home test, and those comprised our entire grade. Doesn't speak good english, is not a nice person, and writes very small on a lecture hall chalk board. Hardest B I've ever got. Avoid.
I almost lost my mind within the first two weeks. I couldn't understand a word he said, and it didn't help that the class was in an auditorium in Pray. Gosh, terrible. I managed to get a C-, I think from his sympathy. Horrible clarity, if you take him, make sure it's in a small classroom.
He has no business being a teacher. I think he knows that he is inept because at the beginning of the class he stressed that he is a good teacher, and that it would not be his fault if anyone failed. The entire economics department needs to be monitered. There are way too many abysmal professors.
If you come to class and listen, try your best, and read the material, I do not see how you can fail. Econ is not an easy subject, but he explains it on simple terms and makes the lecures interesting with his sense of humor. He gives you every opportunity to pass the class, which is most important, not his personality.
Very hard to understand and not very helpful. He doesn't like to repeat himself or answer questions.
Prof. Dewan's teaching is absolutely inconsistent with his tests and examinations. This is only a good professor if you read the book and learn that way. Dewan WILL NOT help you to understand the class.
I think he was a good Prof. You need to attend class and do the study guides he sends via email. The quizzes and tests are pretty much what is on the study guides. He has a strange but funny personality. Yeah, he has an accent but it's not that bad. I would read chapters and do study guides. He is always willing to help.
Don't take him seriously, he's far too moody. One class he called us pathetic and the next he said he loved us. He's actually so rude sometimes it's funny. He does seem to go out of his way to make assignments easier and give us bonus points. Extra credit for good attendance. Not a hard class if you show up every day.
Do not listen to the good comments. The teacher obviously wrote that because it's his speaking/writing style. He speaks very obnoxiously inclass and doesn't care if you fail or pass. He is extremely prideful of his past publishing and work. He literally disrespects students who ask him to resend an email because you didn't receive it.
I have always been interested in Economics and this teacher made me hate it. Almost all the time we can't understand what he's saying. He also is EXTREMELY stubborn about resending emails to students who didn't receive it. It's not like he doesn't have time; he DOESN'T WANT TO. In fact the whole class didn't receive but he didn't want to.
The issue with Dewan is he believes that a lack of understanding is due to a lack of effort or caring on the part of the student. The content is difficult. If you take his course you should plan on working a lot on your own. He is difficult to understand, but he explains fairly well. He will not help you if you do not attend class, no matter what.
I couldn't understand a word he said. I would have been better off learning everything on my own. Refused to send notes through email. Just an awful experience!
Dewan is a very nice man. However, he cannot stick to his word, he says this will be on your test one day, then he tests you on something completely different and rearranges his grading scale for his tests like 5 times. You honestly do not know whats around the corner, you have no idea if your quizes even count...
Worst professor I've ever had. Teaches as if everyone is majoring in economics (1 out of 75 students were). Very arrogant attitude and blames everything on the students. It is now 27 days since the semester ended and we still haven't received our grades... Once again, someone else's fault. DO NOT TAKE!
You CAN pass this class (despite what others say) even if you don't want an econ major. You MUST read the book and do the practice quizzes to even have a chance of getting a good grade. Lectures can be long, but sometimes entertaining as he tries to joke. Likes to argue with students as well. Not a bad class if you read the book honestly
Dewan is a teaching a difficult subject, but does not go out of his way to make it easier. Seems to assume that if you do not understand something, you are not trying hard enough. He does grade very easily though, if you show up every class and have a decent idea of whats going on, you won't get lower than a B.
I received my first non A in this class. Completely out of my control. There is no way to know how your grade is calculated and if he does not like you for any reason you are screwed!
First off, it was very difficult to understand this professor because of his thick accent. He's arrogant and blames the student for not understanding the subject. He's up front about you needing to read the book for this specific class which was very true. He wasn't good at keeping grades updated at all.
Everything I experienced others have written
I got an A, but can understand why many students dislike him. He could increase student trust if his grading system were more transparent and students were aware of how grades were calculated. You must read the textbook to do well, and read each chapter twice, if possible. Enjoying reading (and challenging texts) prior to this class helps immensely
While attendance isn't mandatory it is essential. If you dont plan on attending you better be a great reader because your book is now your only friend. Tends to continually push back tests to the point where it gets annoying. The only saving grace is that all tests and quizzes are multiple choice. Also is not clear on grades.
Best professor who teaches economics. Not an easy A but he pushes you to do well in his class. Attendance isn't mandatory but sometimes the lectures are better than reading the chapter and not knowing what you're doing.
After the first month of class I was failing and couldn't stand him. But through lots of reading and being at every class I somehow got an A. He is not clear on some things like grades and tells students straight up they will fail in the middle of class. Do the practice questions he sends and understand the chapters
Dewan is a brilliant mind, but not the best teacher in the sense of learning what you desire out of the course. It was not a hard class at all(for econ ppl) nor was it notably demanding. He is without a doubt the most unorganized prof I ever had(I graduated), but if you participate and respect him he will reward you far more than you expect
Very smart and knows what he's talking about, but very often over-complicates simple concepts. He has a thick accent which isn't too bad and actually helps you focus more. He e-mails study guide questions that will be on the test, so if you do them and study them you will do well. He'll help you if you need it. Also has a sneaky sense of humor.
Prof. Dewan has a thick accent & it is, for the most part, hard to understand him. If ur not an ECON major & u have no knowledge of Economics, I wouldn't recommend him. He can be funny, sometimes, but can also be rude & discouraging. He told the class after the first test, if you didn't pass thts pathetic & you should drop the class b/c it's easy.
Ended with a B because he made it so we couldn't do worse than the final exam. Can't say I enjoyed this class and you have to show up to it. Pay attention to his lectures and memorize the sample questions he gives and you should do alright, but he encourages you to read which I did before the final. He's really difficult to reason with or ask Qs.
Really rude in class, long lectures. Makes the test pretty easy and wants people to pass but he is bad at explaining things more than one way for those who don't understand.
He is the typical foreign professor with an accent who only knows how to explain things one way, and if you don't get it he doesn't know what to do. Having said that the book was awesome and easy to understand and very helpful, and he is a great guy once you get to know him. He does have a nice grade curve.
If you already know a bit about economics and have good comprehension, this class will be relatively easy. However, Dewan is not very good at explaining things more than one way and is rude to students who ask questions. That being said, he gives everyone plenty of opportunities to get a good grade and genuinely cares. Tutoring is a friend.
If you have a choice to not take crary, do not take him. he is a terrible teach and is proud when his class average is a 70%. if you take him, read the book and listen well and take notes. All of his tests/quizzes have very tricky questions and you will not get them right. He likes to give quizzes with 5 mins left, so don't schedule class after his
This had to be the worst teacher I have ever had in my college experience. He can not speak English good which makes it hard to understand what he is talking about. If I had a choice I would never had taken him worst decision EVER!
Dr. Dewan's lectures are interesting and full of information, you should always attend class and take notes! Dr. Dewan wants everyone to succeed. He's quite funny. He sends out study guides on each chapter but don't just memorize, understand the work. If you struggle with Algebra you will have some difficulty; which the math lab can help you with.

Awful prof. Very think accent and rude to students. He says to look over the chapter in the book, but in class doesn't discuss anything from the book and abbreviates or uses symbols (sometimes same letter for multiple terms) for all of the class discussion. He gives you practice tests but they do not help you. Overall very confusing, dont reccomend
I don't understand how people say that he's brilliant when he can't answer questions that students have. Horrible teacher with a horrible personality which is the worst combination. The school needs to let him go, honestly. Textbook, on the other hand, was phenomenal
BEWARE! Very disorganized and no structure to his class. Writes random statements/equations on the board with abbreviations that make no sense. Doesn't refer to what topic/chapter he is "lecturing" on. He babbles like a baby, good luck trying to understand. Bad grading system, changes his mind all the time, and tells students they're stupid.
Briefly put: Dewan insulted students when he believed their questions or answers to questions were silly or stupid, leading to a quiet environment when asking for questions or answers. Dewan's disorganization is his greatest failing, leading you to rely on the book for a decent grade. Know that his lecture only grants "C" worthy test preparedness.
I found that he was rude to other students when they asked questions, and he did not explain the grading, material, and question answers properly. The most I learned was on my own in this class. Would not recommend.
He is very sarcastic. Get ready to feel stupid when you ask him to repeat instructions that are not even clear. His accent is very thick, beware if you have trouble with that. His attitude towards students is unprofessional and he acts like a childish bully whenever he feels like it. Study the book like crazy and you'll survive. Not a real teacher.
Dewan is a hard prof. to crack. Get ready to teach yourself and be called stupid if you ask him to repeat what he said. He tells you right off the bat, that 90% of his students fail his final exam. I do not suggest taking his course if you don't have to.
This man is the rudest person Ive ever met. To me, hes unmotivational and he doubts you. Dont waste your money, get someone who cares about your learning.
I can go on for days why this class will be the worse decision you ever make. Professor Dewan if you're reading this (He's definitely reading this) please take the time to appreciate my advice, I usually charge for my services but I'm feeling a little generous today. Since there is a character limit I will find a way to give you my advice.
The worst professor I have ever had. If you ask a genuine, logical, question he makes fun of you in front of everyone. At one point, my class didn't understand a difficult concept that he was (poorly) explaining, and he told us to "give up on tutoring" and to go to the hospital because if we were really "that stupid" we "need medication".
"If you don't pass this class, you'll end up working at McDonald's for the rest of your life." - Prof. Dewan There's 3 exams for the class, the final is 45% of your grade, that's huge! Prof. Dewan isn't the best a motivation so expect a daily roast when you come to class. Although, I will say this, if you work hard for your grade you'll get it.
Despite what everyone else is saying about prof. Dewan, you can do well in his class if u make an effort. Make sure to read every chapter bc he is not good at explaining concepts. Also, memorize the samples questions even if he says not to bc they are word for word on the test. I am not saying he is a good teacher at all but u can do fine if u try.
Terrible, you learn more from the book than you do attending the lectures. I do not recommend this course to anyone. Get someone who cares about your education.
So bad, this guy doesnt know how to teach. Talks over you, when you try and ask questions he just talks right over you so you cant finish your sentence. Terrible teacher, not a real professor by any means.
Hes honestly very rude, he will spend at least 15 minutes out of every lecture complaining about the everyone in the class. Final exam is 40% of the final grade, better read the book because his lectures make no sense.
Professor Dewan has a very heavy accent that is difficult to understand. If you try to ask a question because you did not know what he said, he will put you down. His lectures make no sense and spends half the time complaining about his students. You can attend every class and jot down every word he says and you will not learn a thing.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. The worst I have ever had .
Read the book because that is the only thing that will help you pass. Profs got little man syndrome and wear clothes too big for him. He acts like this the BBOC.
I dropped his course when he told a story about kicking a student out of his class when the student didn't understand the course work. H also spent half of every class talking trash about the students who don't read the book. This was meant to be a warning to get students to read the book, but I was paying to be taught, not to listen to his rants.
I think all the good ratings were written by the professor himself. Sounds exactly like he talks to his class....
Prof Dewan is a great example of why people are leaving EMU. He is a professor who has difficulty explaining concepts due to his thick accent and lack of knowing how to reword things. He asked a student if they understood what he was teaching, the student said no and dewan said well theres nothing I can do for you. Very unwilling to help students.
This class is all quizzes and tests. Horrible professor, constantly slandering students. You have to read the chapters and show up to class, to get a good grade.
Very rude, do not take his course if you don't have to.
Honestly, if youre willing to put in the work, his class isnt that bad. Your grade will be mostly exam-based, but he gives plenty of sample questions and gives some grading perks to help you succeed. Seriously yall, hell work with you if you work with him and show him that you care about his class.
Hard to understand, unclear of whats on exam, he will ask "what chapter are we on again?" (very forgetful) not true to his word .. do not reccommend if you dont need it
He's awful. My advice for macro: 1. Don't waste your time going to class. Read the book for the hour and 15 minutes you have his class instead. It explains things much more clearly than he ever can. If you hate textbooks and need a good lecturer to learn, do not take him. You will fail 2. Memorize his packet practice questions for exams.
Heavy accent. Tries his best to make you look stupid. If you don't know the answer to a question, he will humiliate you in front of the whole class. Does not help with questions or misunderstandings. He will compare you to himself, ex: "You are not working as hard as I did." I am an A-B student and I am having a very difficult time passing.
Took this class in the online synchronous format, but going to lectures was useless. Read straight off the PowerPoints he gave us. I read every textbook chapter and did all his practice questions, but then didn't do great on his tests. Don't recommend taking this course with this professor.
The class was honestly a lot of fun. Professor Dewan is pretty great and shows a lot of respect for students who do well. The classes were EXTREMELY lecture heavy- some materials aren't even in the book so make sure you take good notes. Be engaged and know the material before coming to class and he'll help you succeed as much as he can.
I do not like bashing people and this is the first time I have ever rated an instructor. He is the worst professor I have ever had out of five years of College. He never responds to emails and always leaves class. If you can utilize another instructor; do it. If you can't, skip the semester and try again later.
If you love being humiliated for attempting to participate in discussions, you'll love this class! Professor Dewan will go off on tangents and neglect important topics on exams, but don't worry, he'll expect you to know the material anyways. And if you don't, he'll remind you that if you fail, it's your fault and you didn't work as hard as he did.
I took a class led by Dewan over 20 years ago. It was horrible. Avoid this professor if at all possible. It was very evident he felt insulted teaching undergrad courses. One time he performed a proof that had nothing to do with the topic but he had to "..do it for my soul. None of you will ever understand" I remember that like it was yesterday.
