DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!!! He has a thick accent an is hard to understand. His tests and assignments are hard and ambigous; he grades harshly. If you are taking this course for GE take someone else unless you like being sufficated with a plastic sack or do not care about your GPA.
The hardest teacher I have ever had and I have been in college for 10 years. Highest grade in class on midterm was 79%. Thick accent and talks very fast. He writes terrible and nearly impossible to read it. AVOID HIM!!!!!
Best professor at csun. He realy loves philosophy and talking to his students. He always took time after class to converse with me a about philosophy. Extremely passionate professor.
Helpful but totally unclear. His grading system (if you even want to call it a system) is all over the place. When he grades your tests, he tells you to read the comments before you talk to him. The problem is you can't read his comments because they look like a chicken wrote them. Other than that, he is nice and willing to discuss topics with you
One of the most interesting classes you will have. There is no text book. Readings come from random documents ranging from 2 to 40 pages (about 30 documents). No matter how well you can write, he enjoys failing your papers and leaves comments in what appears to be hiroglyphics. He speaks either spanish or gibberish during lectures. Say no to FRANCO
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! TAKING THIS CLASS IS LIKE JUMPING OFF A BUILDING. THERE IS NO HOPE!!! he tries to be helpfull but at the same time you cant understand a word that comes out of his mouth, OR read anything he writes. plus no grading criteria, no real text, bad lectures. NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP 4 CSUN SHOULD BE ASHAIMED
No Textbook--All readings are online. Going to class is a MUST--I did no readings but went to class and ended up with an A-. He grades hard, but in the end curves a LOT. 3 midterms, 2 quizzes, 2 assignments. You won't know your grade till the end. Most people did not score high, but he curves. Very passionate about philosophy, nice guy.
Yes the reading are long and tedious for an abstract subject but you simply cant be mad the prof. for being so passionate about it. the man has 2 phd's and KNOWS what hes talking about and his accent isnt so think you wont understand. handwriting is bad though. PLUS he offers extra credit and curves steeply to give everyone a passing change.
Realy solid! Everything is online, no textbooks to buy. Grades fairly hard but offers lots of extra credit and grades on a curve. Cares about the material and anybody who tries should at least get a B in his class.
Boring class+material, but he's really passionate about it so it keeps you awake. Really nice guy who grades pretty tough but curves/offers a boatload of EC. Points for participation and attendance. Easy B, slightly tougher A. Good class for people not all that into philosphy and just wanna get it out of the way.
Presentation, 8-10pg essay based on your presentation, 1on1 interview (you talk about the material and he grades you based on your comments), and participation. Interesting, passionate. Helpful, but difficult. You WILL go through several drafts for a good grade. Accent not bad, returns paper comments in MS Word form (so handwriting isnt an issue)
eye candy....but he grades hard. there are NO TEXTBOOKS in class and has his students read tedious, hard to understand documents with several pages. For my class, there was a quiz everyday on the readings, before you could even have a chance to talk about it. but he's helpful and offers a great deal of extra credit. very flexible office hours.
Professor Franco is a GREAT guy but not so great a teacher. I'd love to sit and talk with him about Philosophy, but his grading methods are terrible, he doesn't allow ANY electronic devices in class (no recording lectures to try to decipher later) and he won't let you have his class slides. Impossible to take notes for. Sorry to say, avoid him.
Horrible professor. Avoid him at all costs. 80% of my class failed because his grading is so obtuse. You wont understand half of what he's trying to tell you, not because of his accent but because he simply sucks at teaching.
As a person, he is a good guy, but horrible at teaching. To replace purchasing books, he uses handouts that are complicated to understand and gives quizes on them before discussing the material. On top of all that, he doesn't allow electronic devices including laptops. Avoid this professor, your better off taking it with someone else!
Horrible. He's a great guy, but terrible teacher. His heavy Spanish accent only adds to the confusion. You must do the readings and you have to attend classes;class participation is necessary. Take class at your discretion.
He is a good guy and also a good teacher, the only thing is that philosophy is quite hard to teach when you want to get into the details, of course his heavy accent takes a wile to get understood. my complain is that the quizes seem to be kind of useless and can hurt your grade so be carefull, the great think is that you dont need a text book, than
He is a very tough teacher. Period. He comes across easy but he can be so demanding. He makes everything unnecessarily difficult. His test questions: one question usually has five questions embodied in it. He wants to challenge his students to read and work thoroughly. Not an easy grader, not afraid of failing you either.
cnt understand...test before we discuss the material...I am lost everyday I think about what I'll wear to class the next day...avoid avoid avoid...
This guy lives to fail his students. Toughest teacher alive. Never happy with your work. Seems easy going but has a cruel side. You will learn a lot but at a very expensive ticket. Class attendance is MANDATORY. Participation is MANDATORY.
This professor is unique. First he is going to insult your work. Then ruin your academic career. Then show you that some teachers do grade unfairly. You may get something of this the labors though.
The most unfair grader in the history of higher education. I've never been so humiliated in my life. He is just easy going and totally unclear and the goals you are to meet until you meet your grades.
THIS PROFESSOR IS HARD. THE ASSIGNED READINGS, QUIZES, PAPERS---THEY ARE ALL VERY DIFFICULT. SO YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK VERY, VERY, VERY HARD FOR AN "A" IN THE CLASS. BE PREPARED FOR LOTS OF OFFICE HOURS. SIDE NOTE: HE HAS A STRONG ACCENT...MAY BE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND
It's possible that you will do more work than you have ever done (in a class)for an ambiguous grade. A truly interesting professor but you will likely punish your GPA finding that out...
The amount of work he will expect from you is insane. You will never have to work so hard for any other class, ever. The burden is endless and useless. Don't kill yourself or fail trying.
I hate him. I havent worked this hard.... ever, for a GE class. He makes you read difficult to understand articles, is an unfair grader, loves to fail his students, has horrible hand writing, and his teaching style is all over the place. avoid him at all costs, you will FAIL his class.
Does not make any sense. The workload and criteria are ridiculously specific, but his grading is not. You will rarely know what you did wrong. Work level is that of a graduate level course. Most of his class ended up complaining about him. Only high marks for free textbooks.
You will have to kill yourself to get even a remotely passing grade, which includes making frequent visits to his office hours and several emails for him to even comply. He's an unfair grader, grades on a point system and will do his best to give you the least amount of points possible. Since when did CSUN start calling itself Harvard, Franco?
Quite possibly the worst professor that I've ever had. Specifics? Gladly. His lectures are unclear and disorganized. His syllabus is vague. His handwriting is indecipherable. He is unable to keep up with the class schedule; e.g. we had our MIDterms in early April, which meant that we had to do half a semester's work in one month-he cut nothing out.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER HE IS THE TEACHER FROM HELL HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO GRADE HE LOOKS AT ALL THE GIRLS SKIRTS HE WILL PRETEND TO BE NICE WHEN HE IS NOT HELL TALL YOU YOU PASS THEN GIVE YOU A F THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
WORST TEACHER AT CSUN PLEASE SOMONE HELP
thick incomprehensible accent, impossible grading system, incredibly difficult course material that he cant even explain, not always available to help out, and ridiculous work load. this man really does need to be fired and never teach again
Awesome teacher, horrable grader. His grading standards are unrealistic. Having said that I just missed an A in the class and did not read about 80 percent of the material. Very interesting though. Do not take him if you are not a philosophy major and have taken several upper division philosophy classes. Really awesome philosopher
This class is so easy! He grades on a curve to make up for his accent, over 100 pts extra cred and if you ever have a question, e-mail him for a super thorough answer. He's very friendly, funny, and willing to help. I have way over an A and never read the handouts. Just take notes and go to every class. Anyone who rates him badly is just lazy.
If someone doesnt pass this class you have to try really hard to fail. His test are multiple choice with some short answers and gives partial credit. He gives so much extra credit to try and get evryone on board even if they completely bomb a test. Really understanding if you need to miss something. sypathetic guy too bad i had phil but good teachr
If someone doesnt pass this class you have to try really hard to fail. His test are multiple choice with some short answers and gives partial credit. He gives so much extra credit to try and get evryone on board even if they completely bomb a test u do well. Really understanding if you need to miss something. really nice guy. too bad i hate phil.
Franco seems like a nice guy, but he cuts students no slack. Personally, I think he'd teach better in Spain. His accent isn't too difficult to understand, but his handwriting is absolutely unreadable. No help whatsoever. His lectures are seemingly clear, but his test questions have little to do what you learn in class. Not recommended!
Great Professor and lecturer. At times spent too much time on certain individuals that wanted to talk about their philosophy and not that of Kierkegaard or Nietzsche, but it does show that he likes to listen to his students. Demands a lot from his students, but in return the student receives much knowledge from him. Highly Recommended!
As an person, He's nice. As a teacher, he is incompetent. He can't stay on schedule or topic. Modern Phil that didn't even look at Lock or Hobbes. The final project is irrelevant (Review the textbook). I was honest and got a "B" instead of an "A" in the class. If I hadn't been I'd have the "A". I should have agreed with him & offered no opinion.
I like this professor!
Educated, knowledgeable, passionate about philosophy, very helpful to his students; yet quite difficult. It's not impossible to get an A, but you'll have to work hard and somehow figure out the demands for the course.
Educated, knowledgeable, passionate about philosophy, very helpful to his students; yet quite difficult. It's not impossible to get an A, but you'll have to work hard and somehow figure out the demands for the course.
His classes are difficult and he does expect a high level of understanding, but nothing more than what is expected from a philosopher. Pay attention in class, complete your work, and participate and his class will be rewarding.
Genius! Interesting class, fascinating topics, great discussions. A must if you really love philosophy — you'll learn a lot. Very respectful professor.
Expects comprehension of confusing reading assignments (in the form of reading quizzes) before going over them in class. Marks "In your opinion" questions wrong if it's he doesn't agree. Will give no credit if definitions are not exactly as he defined during lecture. Very little powerpoint usage, all lecture notes. Heavy/sometimes confusing accent.
He expects you to write exactly word for word what is said in class disscussion about complex problems on tests. If you have the general idea about the concepts, that isn't good enough and he will mark you off on tests. He is an extremely hard grader. If this is one of your first Phil class, I do not recommend you take this teacher.
Did not get through all the material, not because of the professor but the class in general. Too many questions/comments/egocentrism. Felt discouraged to participate, repulsive sentiments. Passionate professor willing to go against the grain. Grades accordingly to a philosopher's standard, need to understand not just the gist but know profoundly.
He is a great professor. There is a lot of reading to do in this class but if you do the reading and participate in class you'll do great. The material is hard but its philosophy its suppose to be hard! Going to class and taking notes is really important in order to do good on quizzes and test.
Class consists of reading, discussion, two tests, one midterm, and one final. Participation and attendance counts toward your grade and he offers very generous amounts of extra credit. He also curves by adding plenty of points to tests, as well as adding points to your final grade. Very funny and interesting prof w/accent. Nice to look at too :)
Giving out extra credit and curving tests is doing a good excuse, but only an excuse. Felt undercut in the class, which affected my grade badly. Professor not entirely honest. Effort for grade skewed. Not willing to admit any wrongs, rather delivers an infinity of excuses.
Franco is a passionate, gifted professor. People who complain about his grading standards are probably used to the dumbed-down standard that seems prevalent in other courses. If you can't read, understand, listen and participate, you don't belong at a university. Franco will cultivate your mind, not hold your hand. Get over it.
He is a very funny and charasmatic person. As a teacher he keeps you entertained and interested throughout the class. He isn't perfect though. He gives out hard readings and quizes you on them before discussing them together. and he grades those quizes VERY hard. Out of the four test taken this semester three were pretty easy.
He really helps out students if you go to office hours which I find really important. But the TESTS and QUIZESES are extremely difficult. Even if you do the readings it won't be easy.
Prof. Franco is one of the most interesting professors I have ever taken! He is very clear when presenting ideas, and encourages you to not only present an idea, but to develop it! He is a very hard grader when it comes to your writing. Be sure to visit his office hours, he will clarify the readings. Also, Chocolate cake, Cookie Monster, & Cats.
At the time I thought it was really a series of mundane exercises in reciting provided works. But now I realize the method to his madness has had a huge impact in how I utilize footnotes in my writing. Really appreciate him now. He's tough but if you hope to move forward in scholarly work take his class.
Professor Franco is cool. He assigns readings that are then quizzed on with 5 questions, 3 multiple choice 2 short answers, usually each class after the weekend. Great way to keep up with the material. Tests are multiple choice, hard, but good. Very knowledgeable and funny in his explanations of concepts. Great Phil professor.
Pink Flamingos, Tofu, cats and cookie monsters. Know anything about these things and you are guaranteed an A++++. Trust me...
If you want to succeed in his class make sure to have him go over the quiz questions in class. He thinks he explains the material well but he doesn't. You have to read between the lines of his power points and what he's saying is not clear. I do not recommend him for anyone, not even Philo. majors.
Overall a nice professor, has an accent but he tries very hard to be understood. Lots of reading and quizzes on them. Attend ALL classes and you'll pass. Cats, tofu, Cookie Monster!
He's a pretty chill and funny teacher. I give him that. He is always making the class laugh and that's something that I enjoy. The topics are pretty interesting. He has a thick accent, but it's fine. You got to read the texts thoroughly, and answer the practice questions to do well. He looks for a lot of detail in his responses. GOOD LUCK!
Let me be upfront and say that if you want an easy A, avoid like the plague. But, if you enjoy learning and challenging yourself, by all means take his classes. Make his lectures your 2nd home and his office hours your 3rd. One complaint: He lets people go on for too long which causes the class to fall behind too often. Great person and great prof.
This guy grades really hard. I didn't get used to his accent until the last two weeks of class. He is not very clear with assignments and it is really easy to fall behind if you miss a class.
Franco is the perfect Philosophy professor. Always remember that when he lectures he takes on the role of the thinker discussed. He doesn't criticize the works, he only tries to get us to understand them. If you can't handle his classes you are a lazy student, and Philosophy is not for the lazy.
Plain and simply the best professor I have ever had, very helpful, very entertaining, he will talk to you for 20 minutes until you understand something and give you real world examples. All negative reviews here are definitely from lazy students who should only blame themselves for not asking for help when he is always willing to help. 10/10!!
Very disorganized when presenting material. Inconsistent grading parameters. Does not follow syllabus. Not open to criticism regarding teaching style. Very bad professor.
The book, Basic Writings on Existentialism, was not written for those that want a direct explanation of it's contents, it's for people that want to shift through pages of rants before getting to the idea. The teacher is the exact same way, he's not clear and doesn't give you an idea on how he expects you to answer the questions on the test.
Ok very disorganized. Very hard grader I wish I can explain on how hard a grader he is. Nothing exceeds his expectations. For easiness I gave him a .29 out of five just to show him how hard a grader he is.
Professor Franco tends to go off on tangents about random subjects more than he does on the actual material covered. He's a better history instructor than a Philosophical one. You don't need a textbook for this class, but there is a lot a reading, which isn't that bad. However, very subjective in his grading, especially with class participation.
Professor Franco is the best Phil prof I have ever had. Phil to Abel isn't a class but a way of life. He teaches Phil with continental rigor. If you are there just to get a grade this isn't for you. take a mickey mouse class and pretend to get educated. This professor is for intellectual students who care about philosophy .
THIS IS A GOD HONEST REVIEW. Trust me. If this teacher is avoidable, THEN AVOID HIM. Franco is an awesome guy, loves Philosophy, loves jokes, and answers all questions in class.. But, he is NOT a good teacher. His tests are very difficult, even after doing the reading. He doesn't give feed back, he just writes ??. HARD TO PASS.
AVOID! Franco is an awesome guy, but NOT an awesome teacher. Definitely not meant for teaching. His tests and quizzes are practically impossible to pass, as all he does is write ?? all over your answers. Isn't clear what he's looking for, and even when you put exactly what he said from the lecture, it still isn't correct. Funny professor, but AVOID
He is very charismatic and friendly. With that said, he is also very unorganized and gets easily distracted! He gives out a lot of readings, and does not clearly explain what is given to the class. I always leave class more confused than I did when I entered it. I know of no one who is passing this class! AVOID HIM.
Not clear in what concepts needed to be studied in preparation for the tests. The readings needed to be thoroughly understood in order to pass quizzes and tests. Study guides provide some help in preparing for tests, but rereading material was essential. No textbook, but the readings are extensive and become more complex.
Another classic example of why to get a technical degree. Even if you put exactly what he says in lectures he will mark you down, I know of no one in the class passing the course, including myself. I usually get A's not this time I studied the most for this course and still did not pass. If you want a very subjective grader go for it. AVOID!
(Phil 202) 1 required book, reading quizzes, and 4 test: multiple choice and short answer questions
I am a 4.0 third year student and I received a D in this class. Professor is extremely irrational in regards to grading, lectures, and clarity. I attended every class and did all of the readings and still was shut down by this professor. I highly recommend staying clear of this professor. I am extremely disappointed in the class and professor.
Abel is funny and very good at helping you try to understand the key points. However, the readings will require a couple of read troughs to understand, especially if you aren't accustomed to philosophical writings. Tests are a huge par of your grade, and are designed to throw you off in multiple choice, and short questions he is very very picky at.
Tests are doable, but his grading style is BRUTAL. I don't know how to get an A on his test but make sure you participate in class to get as many point as you can. His lectures involve a lot of tangents, which makes this class less painful and more fun. Study his practice test questions because some of them will appear on the actual test
GPA destroyer. Charismatic human being but that doesnt translate into a good professor. Goes off topic all the time, and expects your to know exact terminology from reading and also tests on inclass notes that he doesnt imphasizes. Try to aviod
As a computer student taking philosophy classes, this was among the hardest I've took. The lectures were amazing though. I enjoyed coming to class and discussing the readings which helped me understand them better. Tests and quizzes are hard but the curving is extremely lenient and so have to be lazy not to pass. Not a bad prof but difficult. 4/5
worst class i have ever taken, stupid subject, stupid school and their requirements for stupid ge classes
Franco is easily the toughest grader and gives the toughest tests known to man. His lectures are fun and you defnitely learn a tremendous deal. If you do take his class get ready to STUDY STUDY STUDY! Overall a great guy, knowledgeable, and fun class.
If you cannot comprehend philosophical writings then you will absolutely struggle with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of the readings and concepts. To get a B or better you will need to sit down and THOROUGHLY read the readings and understand them. I learned a hell of a lot and Im glad I took his class. I pulled off an A- due to his extra credit.
Do not take this teachers classes. Impossible grader and tests are horrible. Before taking this class I was an A student. Worked hard, read and understood everything and still got a D. I would suggest to not take any of this teachers classes especially philosophy students.
Honestly the hardest professor in terms of grading. He is extremely knowledgeable in philosophy and really makes you think and question. I learned a great deal in his class. His accent is cool and he adds a lot of humor and funny stories to his lectures. Read the material he gives you and understand it because there is no way to BS your way through
Yes, this professor is knowledgable, but there are many amazing knowledgable philosophy professors at CSUN. If could do it all over again, I would 100% graduate a year later, and take 401 with another equally knowledgeable professor, just avoid Franco. There are too many words to describe him, I'll narrow it down to one- flighty.
He gives quizzes on really complex readings before you go over them in class & if you dont understand the readings then failure is inevitable. He has a hard time staying on topic. His tests are very hard and skips over things that you end up needing for the tests a lot. I did not have a good time at all.
I had passed a previous version of this class at a community college only a year ago, with a B or B+, but took this class to fulfill a GE. I passed with a C. His tests and quizzes are difficult, and the quizzes are done before the material is discussed in class. No textbook but posts the material. Some EC. Participation and attendance are graded.
This professor is a very confusing lecturer and grader. I could not follow his lectures at all and he did not really give good feedback. As a result I did not learn much from his class. I had to see other philosophy professors because they are better than him at explaining topics. I wish he is receptive to student input.
I would take his class again. He questions himself, and then he gets confused and makes jokes out of it in a split of a second. The funniest professor ever! No textbook! Excellent materials and informative discussions in class. He is a great professor. I'm going to miss his jokes! I hope to take another class with him.
Great teacher and funny person but a harsh grader. The curve is incredibly high so you really have to lack to fail.
He's a funny guy, class starts at the exact minute it is supposed to so don't be late. He gives weekly quizzes on complex readings before going over them in class! It's hard to predict what part of the readings he'll test you on, but I did notice a trend for the answer being None of the Above! The grading curve is high, so that's your saving grace
I had Franco for 310 and 439. Did not enjoy the classes but got A's. He is changeable with directions and due dates and do not count on him reading footnotes or taking into account conversations about assignments, he does fluctuate often. I do not recommend him unless you have scheduling concerns.
BEWARE! This professor DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. He is tenured so he can get away with doing whatever heck he wants. If you complain about him or to him he will wage a personal vendetta against you and YOU WILL FAIL HIS CLASS.
He is confusing and even confuses himself. He doesn't know how to teach despite teaching all those years. Toughest grader ever. Wait another semester and avoid him at all costs.
Just awful! He doesn't care about how his students are doing in the class. I would never recommend him. Everyone in my class was worried that they would fail and many did!
I would never take this professor again even if it meant that I had to wait another semester at school. I made the worst decision by taking this professor. I had been warned that he was a tough grader but I never in my wildest dreams imagine that he would be this irrational. He doesn't care about the complaints of his students.
Abel Franco is an extremely confusing lecturer. His lectures are hard to follow because he goes off topic constantly. He does not care about student feedback at all
He assigns dense readings and he is unable to explain them in a way that is coherent. He talks about his childhood and his birth country like anyone cares. He is awful. I would never recommend.
This teacher is inconsistent and disorderly. The only attention he pays is to his European outfits. He should spend more time caring about his students' success more than his appearance. He talks a lot about himself and cats instead of focusing on the material. Goes off tangent bigtime. For as confusing as he is, his grading is unforgiving.
Our class is failing because of his absurd grading standards. If you want to keep your GPA solid, look elsewhere. I'm not saying he should hand out As but he needs to grade according to the Cal State academic level. He is the worst professor in the entire department. All the others are reasonable and actually care about their students. Not Franco!
Arrogant professor. Cares more about himself than his students. Claims also to be available by appointment but never makes himself accessible outside of his office hours. Not sympathetic towards his students and their needs one bit.
If you want to make your life miserable then you need to take him. He teaches nothing and is difficult to understand because of his strong accent. He likes to be center of attention and he is erratic in his behavior. He snaps when he gets angry and is inconsistent with his class policy which he constantly changes. Horrible professor!
I'd rather take a semester off than to take him. That's what some of my friends did because they had heard bad things about him. i chose to risk it and take him anyways. HUUUUGE MISTAKE on my part. Now they are all laughing at me crying. I regret taking this awful professor.
Lecture heavy about irrelevant topics: tofu, cats, and himself. He randomly whispers which is bizarre. He has serious issues and takes it out during his grading. How can it be that students with a good gpa end up getting Cs, Ds in his class? He doesn't care to fail his students. Do not complain because it will seriously backfire. He's spiteful!
Hardest class I've ever taken! He's pretentious and petty. Talks about himself constantly. He is bipolar. Says one thing and does the opposite. Tells you not to worry about your grade and then turns around and fails you. He's a liar and a farce.
I'd change my major if I had to take him again. He is so disorganized and rambles on and on about unimportant things. Rather than helping students succeed he helps them FAIL. Leading up to an exam, he wastes so much precious time on BS assignments rather than reviewing for the exam that he grades extremely harshly. He is a total BUZZ KILL.
This was my third class Philosophy class. I was considering getting a minor in Philosophy but this teacher ruined it for me. Bye bye philosophy dream.
I am glad that I never took his class and was able to drop it. My friend stayed and is currently getting 38%. Yes, she is failing even tho she is a straight A student who never misses class and does all of her work in time. It's clearly not the student, it is the professor who is causing the demise of his students. Why teach?
I am a senior year and had a 4.0 until I got a D in this class. Professor is extremely irrational in regards to grading, lectures, and clarity. I never missed class and did all the assignments. I'm sick because of this professor. Keep your sanity and skip him. He's the epitome of a horrible professor. Has no care about CSUN students
Prof. Franco gives extremely hard tests and doesn't help students when they need help. Visiting him during office hours is a complete waste of time. He just doesn't know how to teach. The main issue tho is that he doesn't care to try for his students. Once you complain about him, he makes sure you pay for it. I can't suggest anyone take him.
Franco is def a tough grader for being such a bad teacher. I'm taking him for Phil150 and getting a bad grade even with the few extra credit points that are offered. Considering that Im a A and B student, i am upset about this. i went to see him and basically nothing came out of it. I'm still getting a bad grade. I'll never take him again.
My two other friends and I decided it'd be fun to take this class as an elective on T, Th . We did and were super jazzed to have a class together. Well that excitement is no longer. We're all getting Ds rn because this professor doesn't know how teach. Maybe this would've been fun but with another professor.
Stay clear from his classes.i took him for a 300 level class once and never again. Professor Franco is not honest. He says one thing and means the other. He pretends to want to help us but when issues come up he suddenly changes his mood and does nothing to solve the issue at hand. He does not hesitate to fail his students. Half our class did.
Franco is the worst professor that I have ever taken here at CSUN. It you want to make your life easy then you are going to have to avoid this professor. if you really want to take this subject, choose another professor. If there was a way to give him no stars for quality, I would.
yeah, like horrible professor. He grades hard and can't bother going over the right answers. What the heck!
GPA destroyer!
Super strong accent makes it difficult to understand. Offers participation points but when you participate, he doesn't give you credit for it. Grades very unfairly.
Franco expects you to know how all material like an expert. Anything less and your letter grade will suffer big time.
Quality is zero. Difficulty level is a 10 Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Professor Is not realistic with his expectations, the course is HARD and disorganized, he does not do in class review he expects you to study all the material on your own. Gives tests throughout the semester. The long ass review guides he gives out are useless cuz the material is not even on the test. DONT TAKE
I cannot stress this enough: Pick another professor! He's extremely confusing and doesn't care about his students. All he does is lecture in an erratic way and wastes most of the class on subjects that don't relate to class. He barely says anything important and then expects u to figure it out on your own. Easily the worst class I've ever taken.
Terrible Professor. Thinks he is above everyone else and is very bipolar. I am not lying worst professor to take at CSUN I asked a question in a lecture and he couldn't answer my question in a clear way.
I was thinking of majoring in Philosophy but No, thanks! This professor is a total nightmare. Unhelpful and rude!
This professor needs to get off his high horse and get to the level of his students and teach. He gets quickly offended if you don't understand his heavy accent. This isn't how a real and caring professor should behave like. He acts like a delirious child.
He does not follow the syllabus schedule. He assigns very complicated readings and covers less than 5% in his lecture but then expects you to know it 100% on the exam. Your grade will suffer greatly because of this. If you want to put 110% effort and get 40% of the grade, take him.
He is literally the worst teacher at CSUN. Spare yourself from this teacher!
Professor Abel Franco ruined my freshman year at CSU Northridge. He's insensitive to the grades and worries of his students.
Big freakin mistake on my part for taking him. His tests are extremely difficult. All I can gather is that he must think that he is teaching graduate students. Run for the hills! Nobody got an A in the entire class, more like Cs Ds and some students dropped late with Fs
Even if you tried hard enough you'd be unable to find a worst professor. Seek elsewhere!
Want your stress level to shoot out of the roof? Take any of Franco's classes. He is outright insensitive.
This wasn't a large class from what I saw maybe like 11 or 12 students but it was a class full of agonized students because of this stringent professor. He doesn't give a darn about his students doing well. I'm glad I dropped.
AVOID AT ALL COST. HE DOESN'T CARE. I did all my homework and studied hard and I still did terribly. The first D that I have ever gotten. I will have to retake in the Fall with another professor for sure.
Inflated sense of self importance, very intolerant of students that complain about anything. A huge disappointment for a class and extremely disorganized, very controlling, unclear. Does not help you at all.
I took this class as an elective. His tests were super specific, often going into a level of detail we never covered in class. This caused a lot of us getting awful grades. Basically, you're left to fend for yourself.
Absolutely ridiculous standards. Grades first year college classes as if it was fourth year college classes. Does explain the material well. It's impossible to get an A or B in his class. I tried very hard and even went to the tutors.
Professor is very old and old fashioned. He's not realistic with his expectations, the course is HARD and disorganized. He does not do in class review an expects you to figure it all on your own. Gives two tests throughout the semester and a bunch of hw.
Why do students keep willingly put their GPAs on the line by taking this any class taught by this professor? Strong warning: do not sign up for his classes. Save your trouble and wait a semester. It's simply not worth the mental energy or anguish in trying to pass his class.
He might seem like a cool old guy but he is a HORRIBLE teacher. Irrelevant lectures that come with mandatory attendance. If you want to teach yourself and bite your nails over your grade then Franco is your guy. If you're in the mood to have your GPA, mental health, and patience lowered, take his class.
The worst professor in the world. Never take a class with this professor, he wont pass you even if you show up and work hard. Might as well expect your GPA to drop significantly.
Seems like he cares more about his outfits than caring about his students. His actions speak volumes. He has no empathy for his students.
Crazy hard professor. Work hard and FAIL. Save yourself from this demise.
This professor is horrible. Not willing to help. People that don't go to class do as bad as the people that do go to class. This should tell you that his lectures are a waste of time and he only covers 2% of the reading if that. You better read and learn by yourself to try to pass the course. The worse professor I have ever met at CSUN.
As a philosophy minor, he's by far the worst prof. Ive had so far. Starts the year making promises he doesnt intend to keep and keeps revising his syllabus because he's always falling behind schedule. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, take him no matter what level he's teaching. He should contemplate another career far away from students.
I agree that he is a tough grader hands down! He travels alot. He has no consideration that he falls behind schedule due to his traveling and his rambling on during lectures about his trips. Like we care to hear about it. He jam packs all the tests and hw at the end and proceeds to grade stringently regardless.
DO NOT TAKE! Pretends to care about his students but his grading does not reflect this. Regardless of how many students complain he does nothing about it. This goes to show that the issues of students don't matter. DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Franco is an old school professor with a bad accent. Talks too fast and is hard to follow.
His lectures are incoherent and barely says anything of importance that will help during the exams. He doesn't explain instructions well and expects you to read his mind. Grades harshly.
This teacher is very very disorganized and promises one thing then does not follow through. Good luck trynna read his feedback. His writing is just as bad as his heavy accent. Do not take this class!
i skipped his class plenty of times and studied the nite before the test and ended up doing the same as everyone else who didn't skip class. This tells me that he doesn't know how to teach students that do show up.
Out of all the CSUN prof's in philosophy, he has the lowest passing gpa. I had to get a tutor and Im still barely scraping by with a C-.... completely ruined it for me.
Worst philosophy professor I have ever had, bar none!
Prof. Franco has serious trust issues. Before exams, he makes us turn in our green book and shuffles them around then watches everyone like a hawk. His daily roll requires student signature. if U forget to sign ur name, he draws a huge x across that line. If ur'e planning on taking any philosophy classes u'd be way better off picking another prof.
DO NOT TAKE. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Exams and homework are hard, gives 3x more homework than other professors, is extremely difficult to understand.
Overall this prof was the worse professor I've taken. He will be tough on your grade if you don't know your stuff to the T. Also for the in class tests be prepared to write five essays in a pressed amount of time. The questions have several parts and he is a brutal grader!
Before you take him, think again! He will make you work like a dog and still ruin your gpa.
I would give him a "0" if I could for quality. Too bad that's not an option. Avoid at all costs!
Prof. franco class is quite difficult even if your major is philosophy. He provides an irrelevant study guide for the tests which makes you stay up all night studying concepts that arent even useful for the exam! Who does that??? Someone who does not care to help his students and wants to agonize them.
This was the most horrible class Ive ever taken. Professor gets frustrated when you ask too many questions and dismisses you with We will talk later Going to his office hours is useless. I honestly dont think he cares about our issues. He does not know how to lecture and he tends to stray from the topic which leaves you in a lot of confusion.
tbh I'd rather step on a tac than be in his class. Less pain.
Grading style is tough as nails. Will make big holes in your gpa. Youve been warned!
Legit the hardest and most frustrating professor. Deter yourselves from this mess.
Gives out lots of handouts updating his requirements and only posts a few on the online canvas website. Hard to keep up with him constantly changing his mind. Save the trouble and chose another professor.
Asks for an inch but expects a mile. He expects you to read his mind and have complete understanding of a very complex area of study youre there to learn about. Hes terrible at explaining what he wants from you and will give 0s to students who spent hours on assignments. Do not take him!! Do not!!
If ure interested in philosophy dont take him, he will make you change your mind. If ur lucky you might be able to pass with a C- but chances are you will drop after getting low grades for tons of effort u put into it. He is not easy by no means and there is tons of reading and hw in his class. Think twice before you lose your time and money.
His tests are crazy! Ive always done good in all my classes, except for this one. I ended up almost dropping the class but didn't make the withdrawal cut. I would study for hours on end and would still fail. Save yourself and do not take this professor.
-Professor Franco cares about teaching as much as I care about cats and tofu. Your success is meaningless to him. Switch to another professor or drop the class, Your energy and time will not pay off in the end. Have a problem with that? Deal with it because its like talking to the wall with him.
Franko is difficult to understand, gives a lot more homework and writes his tests more difficult than any other professor in the same department. It was very frustrating taking this class, putting in the effort and still receiving a D which shot down my gpa.
horrible and a waste of time. you'll never understand him even if you tried to. His exams are too tough and unexpected exam questions is what you get. Even tho he provides you with long review guides dont bother with them less than .000000000001 is on the actual exam. #BEREADYTOFAIL
His class is simply incomprehensible. He terrifies students, covers very little material, and grades in an incoherent manner. Preparing for the exams is difficult No one understands how he grades and his grading system fluctuates a lot.
So bad that took a "W" just to avoid getting ticked off at the end of every class. After 15 or so years of teaching at CSUN, you'd think hed know how to teach by now and grow some likeness for CSUN students. This professor is the extreme exception; by far the worst professor. Gives CSUN a bad reputation
Some of his rants sometimes interesting at xs. I learned more about Spanishards and his childhood than the actual class subject. Too bad none of that was on the exam.
Even if you like Philosophy, do not take him. Unorganized and unclear and forever changes his mind. Runs thru notes assuming the class knows everything. No guidance on how he expects you to prepare for the exam. A complete nightmare.
The bad ratings are spot on. Where there's smoke there's fire.
worst teacher in dept. He assigns a shtload of assignments due either right before or during finals week. hes was gone for two weeks then he crammed all this sht in before the end of the semester dont take him, he doesnt care about students and that we have to study for other classes
the professor is bad at staying on topic. the lecture is hard and impossible. No TA or tutor for this course. He doesnt take that into account and grades like Hitler.
Skip this professor, wait 'til next semester!!. Convoluted lectures do not help for the timed essay exams. You will have to find a way to teach yourself or go beg other professors for help Even tutors cant help. Ridiculous!
Do not take this professor at any level ! 100-200-300-400 He's awful and expects you to be a philosophy expert. He seems easy going but you quickly find out that appearances can be misleading. Wait until you get your first F on the hw or test,
Do not take his classes you are asking for an "F"
Save your withdrawal for something else !! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I agree with the negative comments posted here.
He is so hard. His class is the hardest class I have taken. Class is pointless. He spends the entire class talking about irrelevant information and the tests are impossible. He skips around at all lectures. I definitely recommend getting out of this class if you can
Stay away from his classes if you don't want your life to be a living hell. You put the work in, You read, attend all classes but he is a HARD marker.
I was stuck taking him because the philo department doesnt offer many classes. Horrible is an underestimation.
*Do NOT take him* Professor Francco has got to be the toughest grader on campus. He is a very hard grader & on top of that he is not a fair grader and his grading is all over the map. And when u bring ur grade up to him he does zilch. He gets an F for this
This class is a train wreck, wanna survive? DROP.
I vote: Avoid his classes. The material taught was kinda interesting but not given to understand it. He forgets where he left off and rambles on. Maybe like fifteen random minutes outta the whole class period is worth taking notes on. The rest is a waste of paper.
Wishful thinking. It does not help your grade if you go to class and turn assignments in on time. I worked my butt off in this class with no positive results How is it that the harder I tried, the grades stayed the same or got worse. fyi, I am an A student. A good way to wreck your gpa.
warning folks! Once you're in class you can't leave. If you leave you loose points for attendance. Strange and inconsiderate! If you want to take his class, wear a diaper.
This class was extremely hard. His test questions were super random and there was no good way to study for the test. His study guides are useless. None of it is on the test. Couldn't understand his point in doing this.
DONT take him. TONS of HW, test heavy and 15 page papers! Has no consideration about students having a life other than his class. He is lecture heavy but you leave more confused than when you came in. He is also contradictory but gets mad if you ask for clarification.I wish I wouldve dropped .
Avoid at all costs. Absolutely the worst professor I've encountered. Difficult to understand his English, Hostile attitude towards students complaints. Ruins what could be a very interesting class. Your grades will suffer. Awful
If you don't need this course for your major, don't take it. TAKING THIS COURSE WAS THE WORST DECISION EVER. His lectures are so useless and I pretty much had to teach myself. Midterm the final, and hw were brutal. Because he sets the bar insanely high.
He's a very disorganized professor. Late at posting assigned readings. Comes into class dressed in suits and ties, he should spend more effort into his class than on his appearance DO yourself a favor & steer clear!
Franco is lecture heavy but rambles on about irrelevant stuff for the majority of the lecture and leaves you to teach yourself Taking his class is like tying your hands and jumping in a pool
Unclear, not helpful, scatterbrained, disorganized, and an all around bad professor. Most of the time lost us all with his random and not relevant sentences. I spent more time educating myself then learning anything from this professor. :/
I left this class like way worse off than I entered it. It was a super rare occasion when I could understand what he was talking about. Long, random pauses to stare at his pocket watch. The grading seems very random and quite subjective.
Has no prob if you have to drop with an "F" even if youre about to graduate. He won't stop you because it's obvious that he does not care but the weird thing is he pretends to care. He should walk his talk.
Lectures are absolutely incomprehensible. He rambles, doesn't explain things, and presumes that you know things you don't. Don't bother. Skip this class and chose another.
Terrible, read other posts as my complaints are already spelled out.
Very hard to understand. Strange how he doesn't let students interrupt other students talking but then he constantly interrupts students talking. His way or the highway basically
Franco is the harshest grader, wasn't worth all the work. You can clearly know the material, but when you don't answer the way he wants it answered he will give you little to no credit.
This professor is deaf to your problems. If you take his class you will have to many problems. Better to just not take him if you do so drop him before its to late.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, HE GRADES HARD AND GIVES WAY TO MUCH WORK FOR A 100 LEVEL. NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY, IT'S BAD FOR HIM.
HARDEST PROFESSOR I EVER TAKEN PERIOD. He is polite and all that, but his subject is the hardest subject ever taken. VERY TOUGH GRADER. You need a lot of reading.
Franco made the material in this class 20 times harder than it needed to be. Took the fun out of it. Grades to hard. By the end of the semester everyone was worried if they'd pass. Do not take any class with this professor for your own sake.
Let me tell you the facts and you decide for yourself. We put in way more time into this class than any other class on the planet and like still half of the class didn't pass.
Awful! i didn't expect the highest quality of learning when i came to Franco but he is beyond bad. i cannot believe he is a college teacher. He gave so much readings that you have trouble retaining everything. Cant say i learned much. Whata waste.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! RUN RUN RUN.
Once in a big while hed talk relevance but most of the time he was all over the place talking about nonsense. Don't take him!!!
He talks super fast pace and with a heavy accent. Work smarter not harder and chose another professor. This one WILL fail you in a blink of an eye. he does NOT care for you.
Horrible professor! He failed .80 of the students for no good reason. Everyone was panicking about their grade and for good reason.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. HE IS SOOOOO INCONSISTENT, FORGETFUL AND ALWAYS CHANGING HIS MIND. IF YOU ARE A NORMAL PERSON AVOID HIM AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT. HE SHOULD DO US A FAVOR AND LEAVE CSUN SOONER THAN LATER.
Lectures were dry and class participation was based on the discussion of the readings which he posted like three days before. He often contradicts himself but never admits it.
Not organized. Franco may like the material he teaches but he doesn't know how to convey the concepts to students. Hard to take notes because he rambles on and on and on and on Then he rushes lectures to cover a few points and misses a bunch of other ones. He is hard to learn from.
there are no words to describe how terrible he made the semester. I kicked myself for taking him. Hes a trickster who will trick you by being super chill up until the day you can no longer drop. Save yourself the headache and avoid him!
I would not advice to anyone taking a course with this professor. His lectures are difficult to follow even with power points which he refuses to share or post. The extra credit he offers is nothing but one of his scams.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD IN MY 5+ YEARS HERE. DO NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY OR WANT TO KEEP YOUR SANITY. STAY AWAY!
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The worst, bar none, professor ever. Not helpful. I had all A's is all my class because I am a good student. But I was actually failing this class because of him. Harsh grader and doesn't know how to teach in an understandable way.
Franco is a bad teacher. Dont take him. Tests are super hard. He confuses himself and the class.
HORRIBLE!! He does not speak clearly. He hands out a sorry review before tests. The terms on the review are not even on the exam! He needs to pick up another profession because he is definitely NOT good for being a professor! DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS BY THIS PROFESSOR
Very hard to learn from this guy, if he says something isn't going to be on a test watch for it on the test. Something needs to be done about this teacher if more than a third of his class gets failing grades.
He's all over the place. Gets off track but expects you to know everything. His accent is horrible and he speaks faster than the speed of light. Bad combination all around.
Unrealistic professor. Tests are timed and essay format. He expects your answer to be as long as Marcel Proust's masterpiece. Nothing is ever enough for this professor. Skip him or regret.
Franco is the hardest professor I have ever had. His tests are extremely hard, he lectures on material mostly not on the test, and the homework is outrageously long. His class is tough and impossible.
Toughest professor I've ever taken. Get urself another professor and save urself a ton of stress and extra work and get a different professor.
I shoulda paid attention to the reviews. I think ill barely pass.
He is an interesting professor and he makes the lectures interesting, however he is a bit unclear in what he wants for essay questions. Other than that I have no problems, he is funny and teaches the material well.
my biggest mistake in 2019 is taking this professor. he is so hard and i am almost failing his class. never again!
It's impossible to understand his thick accent. This doesn't help him being an awful teacher. Most of our class is struggling and getting D's. Avoid him!
ONE WORD .......... AWFUL!
Constant readings, readings dont match quizzes.
Stupidly hard. Guys dont even think of taking him.
not good
take and regret
Save yourself! This class is the only class I failed in college and I have taken Business Law, Economics and Accounting and even those where easier than this class. He gives out test and quizzes about very tiny details in the readings he makes you do.
I took the class w/o knowledge of his score here, and was a bit surprised when I saw. He's a kind person overall, w/ interesting stories from his travels. He's a tough grader, but class content's thought provoking, and if you attend office hours and participate, he'll round. Avoid if you can, but if you have to take, put in effort, you'll be fine!
Never would I ever take this professor again. Inept at teaching but a professional at handing out bad grades that will ruin your report card.
Hard to make sense of what he is saying. He speaks 100 MPH as fast as your grade with fall.
This class was tough and participation matters. Read before class and PAY ATTENTION! He's open to all questions so the more you ask, the more you understand. All the quizzes are extra credit. He is an overall interesting professor that challenges your brain because it is philosophy. If you're not a hard worker, don't take him.
I felt like he didn't want our interpretation of the readings that we were assigned, but his specific interpretations of the readings. I never felt prepared for the tests or exams because despite studying days prior to the exams, i would fail. Don't take a class from him, you will feel defeated and lost.
This is the worst class I've experienced. He needs a new career path.
I had his class asynchronous, and it's the worst class I've ever taken. How he expects this much from an intro to philosophy class is baffling. Avoid him like the plague. I didn't get out when I had the chance, don't make the same mistake.
Genuinely one of the worst professors ive ever had. Graded harshly, never responds to emails. Struggled with a D until the tail end of the semester. In his essay feedback it felt like nothing was ever right to him. avoid avoid avoid
If he says not to review multiple choice questions from previous quizzes/tests for an upcoming test, DO IT; because they ARE on the upcoming test. His tests are awful because the choices were so vague that any of them could've been right. I didn't open any of the readings all semester or study and scored an A just by doing that and participating.
He was so bad, I wanted to give him a 0. But that's not possible, so I give him a 1.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He explains the readings after taking the test in an incomprehensible accent. The quizzes are hard. It seems that he enjoys it when the students are not successful. Never take him, avoid this nonsense struggle.
Took this class without knowing the professor and I completely regret not checking first. So many readings throughout the week, no homework just readings and quizzes. One bad grade on a quiz brings your grade down by 5% or more. Do not take this class unless you genuinely like philosophy and reading a lot.
Other reviews dont do him justice. Great philosophy professor that has a lot of insight and enjoys talking to his students. His grading seems hard at first glance but he curves the grade at the end and offers a lot of extra credit. Material is the hardest part, but thats what philosophy is.
There were readings or a film to watch almost every week but most of them were short. He is a tough grader but just pay attention to the notes in class and write them down. I failed all the written/essay sections of the exams but I still got an A in the class. He's chill and funny but the material is not easy. You do need to study for tests.
Do not take this class if you care for your GPA. Don't make the mistake of ignoring reviews. Your efforts are ultimately fruitless. Extremely unclear and harsh grading criteria. One quiz question asked about the dress color of an unnamed character. She appeared for 10 seconds. No room for interpretation, which is odd in a philosophy course.
My man is a real deal old-school philosophy professor. None of these weak wristed wimps that teach the subject these days. A Spanish fella who got a real classic European education and is able to teach the subject in a real way. If you want an actual education, take his classes. Just do the readings you lazy bums! His class is for real chads.
He grades you as if he was grading fellow philosophers that already have a PHD title. The readings are not hard but he's an extremely tough grader. The worse part is you get no feedback only some incomprehensible scribbles. If you think you answered thoroughly keep writing because trust me it's not enough.
Not a good professor for a 100 level class. Extremely rigorous grading criteria. The amount of reading he gives out each week makes this class more stressful than my major related classes. I admit the professor is very passionate about philosophy but most of use just here to clear a GE requirement.
He's a very cool and funny person. The problem is his grading is ridiculous and he expects way too much on his exams and asks the most specific and obscure questions from a reading you did months ago. The answer choices on the multiple choice are almost to set you up for failure and don't even try to get full credit on the essay questions. Avoid.
Prof Franco is an expert in the study of Philosophy and has a good understanding of what he teaches, but his grading and teaching is merciless. It feels like I'm taking an upper division course. His tests are extreme and he's holding half our grades worth of points hostage because he knows no one is going to take his final if we knew our end grade.
Professor Franco is very nice, funny, and an expert in what he is teaching however he is horrible at teaching it. If you use the bathroom during class he will mark you absent. Be prepared to read about 50 pages per week. You will have a quiz every class session filled with obscure and ambiguous questions and answers that are designed to trick you.
This class was easy if you annotated your printed readings and also took notes in the readings based on the lecture. Lectures were enjoyable and necessary, and Prof Franco gives partial credit if you write down your reasons for choosing your answer but still got the test question wrong. My best advice would be to write and read as much as you can!
Professor Franco's PHIL150 class is tough, but engaging for those genuinely interested in philosophy. The workload is heavy, with lots of reading and challenging exams. However, using resources like unstuckstudy ai alongside the provided materials can help manage the workload. Overall, the class is rewarding for dedicated students.
Listen to the ratings. Don't be like me and think you can do good in his class. His tests are very specific on documentary's and readings and doesn't let you use notes so you have to have good memory. If you are good at philosophy then you should be fine but if your not look for another professor.
This was probably the worse professor/teacher I have ever had in all my years of being in school. His accent is hard to understand on top of that his handwriting is worse than toddler, so when he l
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. His accent is borderline impossible to understand. No open book tests. Many students including myself asked to use notes and he refused. Grading criteria is not clear. This man doesn't teach, he just talks. Asked for help to improve and he said "If you're reading the material you should pass."
These reviews make me sad honestly because professor Franco is a really kind person. His test and grading criteria is kind of obscure, but if you go to his office hours and really make an effort to meet with him outside of class it helps a lot. He also curves grades and offers lots of extra credit.
This was probably the worst teacher I have ever had in my years of being in school. He thinks its a smart to assign 3+ reading articles then have a quiz the next class that you only have 7 mins to complete. He doesnt go over the topics in the reading until after the quizzes, so youre basically teaching yourself. CSUN FIRE HIM PLEASE!!!!!
Honestly, yes it can be a tough class, however if you do the work, read and just skim the papers and highlight important things its so easy. I got high grades on all the tests because I figured out the type of questions he would ask, which are pulled directly from the readings and quizzes are open note. Such a wonderful guy.
DO NOT TAKE! Boy, do I wish I saw this page before I took his class. You're quizzed all semester on things he hasn't lectured you on. Hopefully you interpret the readings the same way he does, because there's no explanation for what you got wrong. Quiz questions are purposefully confusing and tricky. I could go on and on; HE'S TERRIBLE! AVOID!!
He is the worst professor ever. He gives us quizzes every Thursday based on readings and a few documentaries, and he thinks I got almost every answer wrong on every quiz or test. Sometimes, he assigns each student questions to answer based on recent readings which sucks. I would recommend not taking this class under his profession.
If you don't care about professor reviews, make sure to really care about this guy's profile before enrolling. Class had like 150 people and ended up with only 10 within a few weeks. Worst and most confusing grading criteria and expects you to finish exam questions sub 30 seconds. I thought I'll ride it through but it was IMPOSSIBLE to even pass
A very hard professor. Its possible to pass as long as you do the readings and understand the material. The quizzes are designed to make sure you know the material to a very high degree. This is not a class you can afford to be lazy in. He is good at lecturing once you understand his accent. Ide only reccomend taking him if your a philosophy major.
Avoid his class at all costs!! Assigns very long difficult readings ranging from 10-20 pages multiple times weekly, extremely controlling, u literally loose points if he sees ur phone out or if u go to the bathroom. Extremely obsessed/paranoid that we were cheating to the detriment of the course quality. By far the worst professor I've ever had!
It's not as tough as others are saying and he's legitimately charming, he's just very strict
My favorite professor I've ever had. GREAT lecturer. He will push you to a deeper understanding of difficult material: this can be uncomfortable for non-dedicated students, hence his bad reviews. He's tough, but very fair. Offers plenty of extra credit. Passionate about philosophy. Highly recommended.
This is one of my worst classes I have ever taken. He will provide you with two readings every week, and each reading will be approximately 10-20 pages long. He doesn't know how to format a test properly, and he will give little to no feedback.
If you are not religious, find a religion and pray daily before attending, You'll need it.
You start this class with a syllabus quiz designed to humble you immediately. Getting an F early really sets the tone for the rest of the semester. Consider it philosophical foreshadowing.the course isn't about learning philosophy, it's about accepting defeat. Hi accent is not understandable and you need a translator to explain
