Quizes are online most of the time...When they're in class, it's open notes open book...He's a good teacher, but he does rely on people who attend his study sessions to answer in class questions...Reviews only 85% for tests.
great professor, its a hard class, but he's available to give alot of additional help to students if needed!
If you are not the best student, the only way to pass is to attend the optional workshops organized by professor. Doing homework is also very important. Quizzes and tests require much knowledge to learn and memorize, so it's a pretty hard class.
Great teacher. Offers many additional help sessions, and speaks very clear in class. Alot of information and the class is not easy but help is there, so you determine the grade you want. I would reccommend him.
The teacher was very helpful. Did a lot, including workshops & reviews, to make sure his students did well.
Very good teacher! Teaches and explains very good! He knows when class doesnt understands something, so he goes over it again and again until we understand. Does good reviews before exams! Very helpful
He is a good teacher who explains things pretty well. I took him during a condensed summer class and it was still pretty easy. The only negative is that he has a tendency to have favorites. Would definitely recommend him.
Excellent teacher; explains and teaches very well. Does great review for every exam!
Good teacher & helpful ONLY if you have unlimited free time to DEVOTE to accounting. Not at all helpful to people with jobs. All workshops & review sessions are in the afternoons/evenings. 2 hour night tests. Not friendly in class, calls on people & then tells them to "hurry up" and answer. Made fun of a guy in front of the class for his accent.
Dont know what happen to him this yr but he is the worst teacher I ever had. workshop hours are always at the same time which alot ppl cant go. Every exam is 2hr. His quizes is more like pop quizzes. Pick on ppl to answer questions and makes fun of him. Switched from online quiz to in class pop quiz which the grades are dvided by 2. Not recommend
DO NOT complain about the online quizzes! Too many students pretended to have problems with them & so he switched to IN CLASS POP QUIZZES without using the book! Online quizzes are open book, 40 minutes, SUPER EASY! A few dumb kids messed it up for everyone! You have to have a book for this class & you really have to go to every class
very clear and teaches by the board! he's Not hard if you attend his lectures, he is always willing to help. it does take a lot of time out of your day but if you work hard you'll do fine. his test are not too... hard he gives extra sample exams but you would know that if you go to his workshops. i would reccomend to take him!!
If you really want A it's impossible not to get it. He helps so much that's it will be probably your fault if you won't get at least B. Spend time doing homework and going to workshops and it will deffinately pay off. The Best proffesor at UIC - clear, enthusiastic and very helpful.
Very funny and entertaining professor and he knows his stuff. Test's are very representative of what is taught in class. However, time limits on 2nd test in our class was rediculous and most of the class averaged a c or lower compared to B's or high on previous test. Lots of studying and repition is needed to complete this class
one of the best teachers i had..entertaining....just do your homework AND GOTO THE WORKSHOPS...if you goto the workshops then I PROMISE YOU WILL GET A GUARANTEED A
This guy is a **** jerk. Only take this class if you are hispanic, otherwise you will be excluded from class discussions and teacher help.
I would not recomend him for this class. With class average of D for all exams, he does not curve. He gives extra credit but takes it away later, because "he was too generous and can not give too many A's in class". He is trying to be nice and funny but that is not who he is. Ended up with B, had to work very, very , very hard.
He is one of those proffesors that you just don't want to take
With this guy, you either love him or you hate him, and if you hate him like me you don't have much choice but to take his class and hope he won't call on you in class and make you look like an idiot.
This is one of the best professors I've had in UIC. Of course you have to work hard for accounting, its not an easy course, but he teaches it very well. You can't expect to be lazy and pass this class.
Best teacher
If you don't know him well, his words may hurt you or at least make you uncomfortable. However, he is actually an extremely responsible teacher who is really doing teaching!! He conducts workshops that help you a lot. Remember, he will help you to learn!!!! And if you work hard, then you can certainly get an A.
He is one of the best teacher you will ever take. He helps you so much that your an idiot if you don't pass with an A or a B. He gives workshops, in class handouts, gives sooo much in class practice exercies. Just really helpful.
Hard teacher, but you will learn a lot. He makes the boring subject of Auditing, a bit less boring. Pay attention in class, take good notes, and actually study for his tests, then you will learn a lot and you wont fail. Overall he's a good teacher, he gets students involved in class.
He is probably the best professor I've had so far. He speaks English and doesn't read off of powerpoints. He's entertaining and makes sure you understand. His workshops are also helpful. He takes the time to make sure you understand the material. I highly recommend him.
Do take him if you are hispanic. You will automatically become his favorite student. Tests are hard, especially the final!
VERY HARD! I've spent hours and hours of studying ... and I barley got a C. Tests are hard. Weekly 1 hour quizes suck. Random homework grading also sucks. He makes bad jokes and works everyone like a dog. Workshops are very helpful, if you have the time. He does teach very well and tries to make you learn! It's true, you either like him or hate him!
Fantastic professor. He does teach so that you understand. GO to the workshops, they only help you. Does examples in class that reflect homework, quizzes..etc. And yes if he knows your name he will call on you. Really a great prof. to get on good side. You either like him or you hate him.
One of the Best. Keeps you on your toes. He made accounting fun.
GREAT TEACHER, HAD A BALL!
Great teacher! Make sure to go to class they help for exams.
Difficult class and boring overall. However, Galvan tries his best to hold your interest and teach you the material at hand. Great teacher, is approachable and friendly. Would recommend.
He is ok.
Nice professor
Get on the good site of this teacher. A lot of students hate this professor. But i loved him. Talk to him after class, joke around with him. After the exams are handed back, he gives you an opportunity to ask him questions and he will change your grade if you ask him nicely that you mis-read the question or something. I took auditing with him.!
He tries to make class fun, which is a good thing. He will call on everyone on class. Lecture is sometimes hard to follow but very useful. Only problem is he gives VERY, VERY little partial credit on written portion of tests. Lots of work for a 3 credit class.
I had him last semester, he doesn't know how to teach! Wish there were someone else was teaching the course. Compared to Salama his teaching method sucks. He rambles lot from textbook. But, in reality auditing is not like the textbook.
Nice guy but teaching sucks.
OMG, I loved his class, Prof Galvan makes auditing interesting. If you on his good side this class is enjoyable. A lot of work for 3 credit class.
Try to take the course with other instructor if you can because this guy is very biased. If you are hispanic then you're are his "favorite". I don't think this guy holds a phd make me question his credibility to teach course like audit. I wish prof. Jansen taught the class.
How can you learn if instructors have to curve grades instead of teaching for the tests? Unfortunately this is indicative of instructors within the accounting department at UIC. The game plan is: Fail as many as possible to elevate the rating of the department regardless if this translates into competent accounting with the industry.
Had him for tax 1. Easy class. Make sure that you do the three extra credit. Exams = quizzes + handouts. He said he does curves; but didn't tell us what the curves were. Just attend classes. He said he won't give you a F if he knows your name and remembers you.
Nice person with good teaching skills. Making accounting easy and interesting. Crystal explanation on every question. Good teacher.
Not a Bad Professor, his round robin thing of asking questions is a little scary if you're a shy person and don't want to get it wrong, his tests make no sense at all and no matter how hard you study you'll do bad, but he curves at the end, and if you read the book (which is really boring) you should do fine.Gives a lot of E.C, guaranteed B class.
Professor galvan is one of my favorite at UIC. With out a doubt. Teaching accounting is hard because it is so bland, he knows how to make it fun and interesting. I've had him audit and advanced and enjoyed his classes very much. He is difficult but this helped me when studying for my CPA. Def. one of the best
His way of teaching is extremely helpful. He's an enjoyable lecturer and makes things crystal clear. Tries his best for everyone to do THEIR best.
Heavy workload but the Professor is fantastic. He is passionate and is a good lecturer. He offers students every chance to do well in the course if they are willing to do the work. I personally think the workload was too much and at times unnecessary to understand the concepts. Overall a great teacher and you will understand the subject.
I'm taking his governmental accounting, and he asks us to put a lot of efforts. You have to preview, and review, do the homework and quizzes as well. But I got a lot from his class. Love you Galvan.
do your work, and go to class. Read the book, ask questions. Not an easy class, but it's a perfect intro for any accounting major. Galvan makes tutoring sessions available, and is accessible during office hours. Don't make excuses and you will succeed. I work 20 hrs a week and got an A.
Galvan was a great professor. He liked to help everyone of his students. Whether in class or outside of class there was always options for help. The TAs also were helpful. Galvan's exams can be difficult but reading the text, doing the hw and quizzes helped me get an A. Galvan likes to call on his students a lot, it's nice to have a teacher that has everyone engaged.
Galvan was one of the best professors i have had! He doesn't let you give up. So prepare for a workload! For a 3 credit course it felt like a 5 credit course. There's quizzes every week along with HW and most importantly, no curve! But I loved this class!
PLEASE TAKE THIS PROF FOR 210! He really cares about his students! He gives a lot of workload but it's for your own good to prepare for midterms and exams. Do not be intimidated, say hi, participate and ask questions. PARTICIPATE! he loves to engage his students
Great professor! He really cares about his students and wants us to succeed. He's very enthusiastic during class and encourages class participation. ACTG 210 w/ Galvan was a lot work but it's worth it b/c you actually learn! We had weekly quizzes & HW, 3 Tests, and one project. Read the book, attend the workshops, and study the quiz questions!
One of the tougher ACTG professors at UIC without a doubt. If you're looking to major in ACTG though I'd recommend him. He really cares and enjoys what he does, but he won't make it easy on you. Need to put in the effort, but he puts that same effort in that he requires from his students. I enjoyed his class even though most of my friends didn't.
hard class but if you're an accounting major definitely recommend him. very helpful, easy to talk to and helped me a lot outside of class
He is helpful if u show interest in his class. He curves not much. Tests are not easy but he tells u what to study.
I feel like I am the only one that is giving him bad reviews. He is super super challenging. He's not the best in explaining. Notes are hard to keep up with. he writes all over the board. Exams are excessive with many parts. There is multi choice and free response. possible to finish his exams but you need to work fast. He calls on you in class.
Had Professor Galvan in Spring of 2013. He is a great professor. Exams are extremely difficult, but if you take the time to study over his handouts, and practice the material, you will be OK. He gave extra credit as well. I highly recommend.
This class is very hard. Not as bad as 315 though. His tests are 30 points free response, very similar to in-class assignments, and 40 points MC. These are just like the online quizzes. Don't give up, class average was really bad.
Professor Galvan is someone who will truly teach you accounting. Show him that you are interested in the class, do all of the work, and when it comes to tests, breathe and just do it. You will do fine if you stay on top of all assignments and attend all lectures. Be a responsible student and you will totally enjoy this class with Professor Galvan!
This class was not easy. HW is easy. His test are hard but the MC are basically the questions from the quizzes. Make sure you study everything. Each test grade got lower as the semester went. The averages were 69, 62, and 45. Not everyone failed the tests though. A is hard to get but is manageable. I was able to get an A with a 88.75%
Favorite UIC teacher. He is very helpful if you show him that you are trying hard. Not that hard if you actually try, and go to every class. Office hours helped A LOT. There need to be more professors like him
The class is not easy. Study the quizes given online because some of the questions come on the test. Even if you think you understand what he is talking about, review because the free response part of the test is hard.
I thought he was a bit harsh when teaching. He did not put documents online which would have helped. The exams seem impossible if you missed a few classes.
He is tough, but you'll be so thankful when taking the CPA exam. Everything he teaches is very relative to its EACH part.
Pray that they hire a new audit professor.
He was a good professor. If you go to his office hours, he will help you tremendously. The exams can be pretty tough, but as long as you study, you'll be fine (be prepared to spend 4 hrs studying). I managed to get a B in his class.
DO NOT TAKE. Tests and quizzes are hard! Only does practice problems in class, leaving you completely lost. Doesn't provide a foundation, so thats all you. Randomly calls on people in the class. Don't be late to a test or he won't let you take it. I tried turning extra credit in early cause I was going to be out of town and he denied it. Terrible.
I'll be blunt. Not a fan of him. He writes all over the board while lecturing and his handwriting is atrocious. His exams are IMPOSSIBLE, they are excessively long with so many parts, people barely finish. It's too bad they don't have another professor for 210 because this guy doesn't cut it.
Very nice Professor! Liked him a lot! Goes over problems in class, which is helpful. Home works and quizzes are easy. Make sure to take them, they are also helpful for studying for the exams, you could see exactly the same questions. We exchanged the quizzes with each other and practiced them, that helped me to get 100% on mult. choice part.
Exams are extremely tough, you have to go to every class if you miss information it'll be tough, gives extra credit but not a lot, overall class is tough recommend taking other professor
Old-school professor that will call you out if you're on your phone, sleeping, or talking in class. He is a down to earth and funny guy and his lectures are entertaining. He hardly ever uses email so he will mention something in class once like extra credit and if you weren't there you're going to miss out. Tests are tough.
I took this class Spring 2015. This guy is unfair when it comes to homework. To receive ANY credit, homework needed to be 98% or more right. Anything below that was an automatic zero. A majority of the class failed the long answer problems, and the class wasn't even curved. Do your best to enroll with a different Accounting 210 professor.
He's old school and doesn't want you on your phone or talking in class. Homework needs to be 98%+ but they're easy. Quizzes can be tough but these are crucial for doing well on tests MC. I showed up to class, did the hw and quizzes, didn't go to the workshops, did the small amount of EC, and I am expecting in an A in this class. Definitely do-able
I consider Professor Galvan is the best professor in Accounting department. He know what he's doing and what he's talking about, some people might not appreciate his humor. He is really knowledgeable and experienced with teaching. Do your homework and taking good notes in class are very helpful. Overall it's a great class to take.
I wouldn't pick him again just for the homework policy. Just worked on my homework for 3 hours and I got a 97%, which to him is 1 out of 3 points. The only way to get a fair amount of credit for your homework is if you get 98% or higher. On a positive note, if you have a large class, he does not take attendance.
BEST ACTG PROF!! These negative comments below are too harsh. Yea you need a 98% to get full 3 points but the hw isn't that hard it comes with instruction videos and is everything he teaches in lecture!! He cracks jokes and is pretty chill. The reason he may seem tough is cause he wants to see you work hard and be respectful. Would so take him agai
Never felt more stupid than I did when Galvan picked on me and yelled when I didn't know the answer. dreaded going to class everyday.
I loved him! He is strict but if you go to every class and pay attention, then you will do fine. Homework is long but if you pay attention in class then it goes by fast. He is funny! I enjoyed his class. Also he gave a huge EC to compensate not curving.
tough teacher and strict, buy you will learn a lot from him .. hard homework... any one will teak this class with this teacher need to spend 7 -8 hours for homework, read textbook, and quiz.
Personally think he taught the material well and you can tell he knows what he is talking about. He is sort of rude and calls people out almost as if to embarrass them. Showing up is crucial to doing well in the class. Tests are very difficult.
This class is HARD AF. A lot of work is needed to do well in this class. Make sure you read before going to class or else be lost in lecture. Gives no background and dives straight in. Goes very fast paced. Is pretty rude and unapproachable at times.I did learn a lot from him. I thought he could have used better teaching techniques though.
210 is rough anyway, but Galvan is not a very good professor. Cold calls students in class often, doesn't give a great idea about what will be on exams. Funny and likable guy, but tends to focus on the nuts and bolts of accounting instead of concepts.
Galvan is special. His exams were tough because he put problems that were the most complicated problem for the topic imstead of the basic type of the same type whic we do 3-5 times. Plus 65-70% of exam is mult choice which is almost never covered in class. Gotta read the book to pass. I ended normally with a high B but he gave me an A. No clue why
Galvin's lecture is not too bad, can be interesting sometimes, but his exam is EXTREMELY difficult. (Short answers, fill-in-blank, and no MC) If you want to do well on the exam, ASK him what topics to study for BEFORE the exams, study his handouts CLOSELY. Again, not the worst accounting Professor I ever had, but class material/scope is too broad.
He knows what he is talking about and would be a great professor if he slowed down his lectures. He curves the class reasonably too. Only thing I had a problem with is that he picks on students and it almost even seems like he is trying to embarrass them. Go to class and do the homework and you'll get a B no problem.
Tests are on everything he does not cover in class. Homework it extremely long. He will cold call you out and embarrass you if you get a question wrong.
Galvan was a great professor. He did move fast during lecture, but he explains everything. Attend office hours, get a tutor, and READ the book. Complete practice problems
I took Auditing with him Spring 2017. He encourages his students to retake his classes in case not doing well. His exams are just UGH. The Two midterms and Final are tricky. He uses his own descriptions on the exam. You can literally hear him when reading those passages. He Curves!do all the extra credit to pass :)Good luck my future generation!
Galvan knows his stuff, he just should not be an educator. His explanations don't help at all, so it is essential to read the book to pass. Be ready to devote up to 20 hrs for this class each week. Definitely go to lecture anyways to keep up with the class. He is rude and arrogant. If you work extremely hard an A or B is possible.
Good professor, if you put in the work it will definitely pay off. Don't get on his bad side. Attend class study his quizzes and the problems he does in class and you will be fine.
This class-extremely difficult. I devoted 8 weeks of my life (summer). He gives specific examples in class for the test. Focus on those and ask for practice problems or your grade will be hurting. Tests are hard. Expect a bad grade. Won't admit to curving. Try to avoid for your own sanity. You will be very good at auditing but at what cost? GL to u
Gets to know all his students. Accounting is a hard subject but he goes over the basics in depth which is useful for the higher classes later on. Lots of homework but manageable. Overall great professor.
Exams extremely difficult and not well prepared for even with lectures and the online homework/quizzes. The class average after the second exam was a D with no curve. He went through material quickly in lectures and was not compassionate to the many students that were struggling.
To succeed in his class: You have to read the book and go to his lectures. His lectures go FAST, dedicate your full attention listening and writing everything down. Take his class in a smaller classroom if offered to ask questions. Study the sheets he gives in class, they come up in exams. He's helpful during office hours, and likes to joke around.
One of the best professors in the accounting department. Gets to know all his students. Lots of work and tests are a bit hard but accounting is a tough subject. If you stick to it he will be a great professor.
do everything you can to NOT take his class.
homework assignments were not very User friendly, exams (the formatting was ridiculous. )lectures need to be more concise. if you take his class take every opportunity you have to improve your grade. Compared to other 210 proffesors rn, galvan is a better option. Learn as much as you can and GL to u. I found this class hilarious tho.
I did great on the homework, but the exams were brutal. If not for the curve, I wouldn't have made it. If you're not an accounting major, avoid at all costs!
Got As on his 3 exams by practicing the homework, worksheets, and online quizzes A LOT. Go to his office hours if you're struggling because he will teach the material better and slower. His lectures were intimidating and VERY faced pace, read the book beforehand. Final was brutal, caused me to lose my mid-A. DO EXTRA CREDIT AND GO TO CLASS.
He is great. The exams were very similar to the problems on the handouts he gave us. Also, he gave us extra credit. I got d on my final, but i still got A on this class because i got full credits on the two midterms and got 20 extra credits.
Wonderful professor. Go to class, listen attentively, and you will get an A. I spent 5 hours each week completing homework assignments ( 1 quiz + problems almost every week). Reading the material in the textbook front and back before the exam helps get that A. Understanding the concept rather than memorizing problems is key.
He makes you work for a good grade and makes the tests difficult. He cold calls people to solve problems and certainly has his favorite students - he even put their names in examples on his tests. I've learned very little from this class except how to type quick and mourn over my lost gpa. He curves though.
There's lots of homework given weekly, does a lot of examples in class and is pretty fast paced but it's easy to pay attention because he lectures well. Go to his reviews, or listen well in class cuz he normally tells you what kind of questions are coming out in exams. Acc is not easy, but he simplifies it a lot and gives a lot of extra credit.
DO THE EXTRA CREDIT AND GO TO CLASS. Homework through Wiley plus and an online quiz given weekly that take a long time to complete. Does plenty of examples in class but you NEED to read the textbook. Use the resources that come with Wiley plus!! Accounting is difficult to begin with but he makes it as simple as he can.
Too many papers, exams are very difficult. don't take him, look for any other professor if you want a B or above.
Probably one if the toughest classes taken here at uic, was on the brink of dropping the class but he is probably the best professor that could teach the classroom. Must do EVERYTHING he suggests, extra credit, review sessions, etc. can not expect to pass the class without working for it. One of the better professors, if not the best.
Probably one of the most challenging course here at UIC. So much homework and quizzes. The exam is super super hard. You need to spend at least 30 hours a week to study for the exams. The materials is too hard and heavy for an introductory class. Good luck!
DONT take him. TONS of HW, the homework is due on Saturday morning and the hw contain what you learned on Friday morning. SO you won't enjoy your Friday night anymore if you taking him. one exam need 3 days to finish! U need study for whole week. 50 bucks book for 20 points extra credit. The lectures are heavy.
Best accounting professor!!!
He makes accounting harder than it should be. Will humiliate you in class if you don't understand the material.
He lectures with his hand written notes and went through those really fast with little time to write things down. He does not use or post slides so taking notes and read are crucial. The weirdest part is I was above average by 8-9 points for the first two exams, got all credits for hw and quizzes, but I still got a B for final grade. Weird!!
I am a hard-working student. I do everything. Read, Extra credit, ask questions. EVERYTHING. This is y you should fr take this into consideration. Please avoid all costs. He lectures SUPER hard. It's like standardized testing. EVERYONE Is taught at the same speed but obvi ppl are different and he doesn't take that into account. He doesn't POST.
Overall, he is a good professor, your just have to make sure you attend his class to understand the concept. He gives you the opportunity to earn your grade, so do all the extra credit he offers and all the quizzes and homework. Just work for your grade and youll do fine in his class
There's weekly quizzes and homework, I suggest starting the homework before it's due. Book isn't mandatory, but you need to get wileyplus so might as well read it. It's very helpful to read it because there's not enough time in class to get through all the concepts. He mostly works through problems during class. We had 3 or 4 EC opportunities.
HW + Quiz due every Saturday at 12 PM. 3 Exams. A lot of extra credit opportunities as well. For the exams, you should do the MCQ's you did in Homework and practice the problems he solved in class. If you figure that out, you will get a good score on exams. Take every extra credit opportunity too. A grade is achievable if you're willing to work.
He takes pride in students leaving bad reviews for him on RMP. Lectures are fast paced and he never slows down. He's vague when you ask him how to study for exams. The class average for the first midterm was a C and D for the second midterm. Avoid him if you can but do as much extra credit as you can. He is helpful during office hours tho.
Galvan is a great professor, I know he can be hard a times but most of the exam material he tells you during lecture. There are few surprise problems in the eams, but most problems are same as class problems. Multiple choice portion of exams are hard, but there are repeated questions exact from quizzes. Lots of extra credit for a better grade.
Does not use Blackboard often. They only way to keep up is attend every lecture and write down everything he says.
No longer teaches at UIC cause he's retired but I am still leaving a bad rating cause I hated his class that much. Makes actg harder than it needs to be and always calls ppl out for not knowing the answer. Lectures were unhelpful cause they were too fast paced.
