Great professor. He is funny, engaging, and keeps the class interesting. He is big on participation, so doing the homework is beneficial, even though it's not graded.
he's a funny guy and very interested in teaching this class. I would recommend him to anyone. Do the homework, participate and review grammar for the tests and your good
There was a major problem with the calculation of my grade. He was incredibly unresponsive when I went to him for assistance and I would up going over him to the head of the department. He balked at her, but my grade was finally changed.
Funny man that is interested in the subject. A lot of reading, but a do-able class. Don't get overwhelmed right at the beginning!
So incredibly hard and very condescending. Pretty sure he normalizes his grades, since I had an A going into the exam and a B- coming out (even though I know I didn't flunk the test). Unless you suck up to him pretty hard, be prepared to find yourself on his 'apathy' list.
Really liked this professor...keeps class interesting and entertaining. You will learn a lot if you do the readings and pay attention. Exams are straight forward. Big on participation, be ready with questions and comments. Not too much homework, just a paper, readings, and occasional hw. Only setback was occasional lack of clarity w/ hw.Great class
He likes to make jokes in his class, so don't get offended if he teases you. I thought he was funny. The class went great until we had to learn something new. When he was teaching it to us, he got easily frustrated with our questions. The amount of homework was reasonable, I found the tests to be difficult, and participation is really important.
I really liked him. He's a funny guy. His sense of humor is very dry though, and if you're really sensitive you might be offended. I felt like I had to teach myself some, but overall I thought he was a good professor. He kept class entertaining and interesting, and there's music every Friday!
Professor Hermoso was a very nice man. He would was pretty funny and didn't mind when people would be funny about the spanish they spoke. He played music in class to teach us something and the homework wasn't too bad. He never colected it. Very approachable and understanding.
My favorite professor at UNC. He can come across as intimidating, but if you take the time to go to his office and get to know him he is a GREAT guy. Participation is the key to your grade in this class. If you do the work this is definitely a class you can make an A in. But you have to take it seriously, he hates apathy.
He has a thing about making sure it's "los problemas" and not "las", but he's great. He gives chances to make up for it when you forget to turn in homework (or just aren't there). But there is daily homework, and you never know what he'll take up.
He is very funny and takes participation seriously. A little tough on grading but its because he cares.
I enjoyed nearly every aspect of this class, and I would highly recommend it to everyone. I mean, this professor is generally very understanding and wants to encourage students to do well. If you're lucky you'll get to experience the Spanish sense of humor and get to hear some cool music in class.
Professor Monoz-Hermoso is definitely not the easiest professor I have had, but I learned so much in his class and could really feel my speaking-ability improving. He loves having discussions about issues of morality or historical events. Don't take this class if you don't like speaking in class because participation is everything.
Great guy and great professor. You're going to have to put in a good amount of work, but you can get an A and he will help you get it. He wants to help whenever he can and is always making jokes. If you like Spanish and want to learn, take this class. If you don't like Spanish, don't take it.
Abel is a very knowledgable professor who makes his classes very interesting. His enthusiasm for the topic (Contemporary Spanish history) was very evident, and it was clear that he wanted us to learn. Participation is very important in his classes and is a significant portion of the grade. He is always willing to help and wants his students to try.
Nice guy, funny, and teaches fairly well. He is a tough grader, but is willing to give you practice questions to prepare for exams. Hard to get an A.
The greatest. See him outside of class, and often. Funny, and probably one of the kindest, most genuine souls you'll ever meet.
Very knowledgable prof, but definitely had to work more than in any high school Spanish class. Lots of assigned homework. Get ready for pop quizzes. Heavy workload but really developed my Spanish skills and understanding of grammar. I like that he encouraged understanding rather than memorization. Not an easy A, but enjoyed the class and prof.
One of the best profs that I have had at UNC:) Cares a lot about what he is teaching. Not an easy class but I am so happy I took it.
Not an easy professor but he definitely helps you improve your spanish. My conversation skills got so much better in this course because he forces you to participate in class or else your grade suffers. Not an easy hgrader and his tests are tricky but hes very fair
Abel is a fantastic teacher. You have to participate to do well, but because of this my Spanish improved immensely. There are also a lot of different grades so one bad grade won't make or break you. He really cares about his students and that is evident in his lectures.
expect to learn a lot, read a lot, do a lot of Homework. Super rewarding teacher and funny guy who is available to help. He makes class fun and challenging but is a really hard grader which can be discouraging.
Super good professor. You have to be engaged and ask questions, but he's super accessible and understanding. Lots of things are graded, so no one assignment will bring you down. If you participate and pay attention, he's on your side.
Go to class and participate as much as possible. Nice and understanding guy but really makes you work for your grade. Good professor though. Go to office hours as much as possible. Grades subjective - make sure your subject/conjugations and articles/nouns agree.
Abel is an incredible professor. He is super super nice, and really wants his students to do well and be engaged in class. He does want things to be his way though. Participation is a must. However, he is super helpful and understanding during office hours. The workload for this class is heavy, but doable, if you understand the material well.
He is really knowledge on the material. However, he can very rude i.e. during office hours. If you don't participate daily in his class, don't expect higher than an 80 on your participation grade.
He expects you to participate at least once a day in class. He is a harsh grader.
Sr. Munoz is certainly a strict grader and expects everyday participation (multiple times throughout class), but his rigor forces you to really buckle down and learn the grammar, and he mediates the difficulty through humor and actually caring about his students. He is certainly a great professor, albeit difficult, who will improve your Spanish!
Love this guy! Very funny and definitely awards students for putting in effort and participating in class. There is a good bit or work outside of class, but it is relatively enjoyable and usually doesn't feel like busy work.
Abel is such a great Spanish teacher! Go to his office hours and get to know him early! He is a great person outside of teaching! He gives pop quizzes (gr) and relies a lot on speaking participation in class. However, he makes sure you don't feel embarrassed when you mess up and is so patient. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
ABEL IS THE BEST! He is funny, engaging, and fair. He's a fairly strict grader but if you go to office hours and ask him how to improve, you'll do fine. I took SPAN 255H with him and improved my conversation skills a ton! Just be ready to participate.
Profesor Muñoz-Hermoso is absolutely amazing. He cares so much about his students and their growth. There is a lot of work for this class, but it is worth it. Also, participation is a large part of your grade, but because it is a conversation class so all you really do is converse. 15/10 would recommend 255H
Really hard grader on participation, it reallllllyyy matters here! Great person, loves his job and you will definitely improve your grammar and conversational skills. If you're taking 204 he is the best! (and if you're thinking of studying abroad in Sevilla, he is the head of the department and a great resource)
Professor Munoz-Hermoso's Span 255H is such a treat! I thoroughly enjoyed learning new expressions every day. Class is never dull and he is always sharing his personal experiences as a Spaniard with us. Yes, he is a tough grader, sometimes intimidating, and expects everybody to participate in class. Well, it is a conversation class!!
This class was hard ngl, but show him that you're working hard and trying to improve - go to office hours!! Really cares about participation in class and a little tough on grading. Graded on voicethreads, quizzes, homework, participation, 2 presentations, 2 papers, and 2 tests + the final.
This class is definitely challenging, but professor Munoz Hermoso is super understanding and accommodating.
If you put time and effort (+ positive attitude) in this class, you will be rewarded. Span 204 is not for the lazy ones. It is a jump from 203 (which, IMHO is a bit soft) but you will learn so much from him. No-nonsense instructor. He actually helped me a lot during office hours.
Do not take this class if it is solely to fulfill your Spanish requirement. Not the nicest guy ever, expects constant participation in class, extremely strict attendance policy, hard to reach by email, and has out of this world expectations compared to other 203 teachers.
Abel is the man. He is so clearly passionate about teaching, and really shows interest in the lives of each of his students. Span 255H is a tough course, with a good bit of homework. Be ready to participate! I have really improved and become more comfortable as a Spanish speaker in his class! Thank you Abel!
Abel is a very nice teacher. He is very encouraging and creates a great class atmosphere. However, I am in college and sadly my GPA actually matters. He is by far the hardest and toughest grader for all 203. If you are signed up for him and you want to make an A in this class switch out. I made an A on all 3 exams and never missed homework. Still B
I would not recommend taking this class with him if you are taking Spanish just for the foreign language requirement. He is an extremely tough grader, especially when it comes to participation. I spoke most classes and had a 75% as my participation grade for most of the semester. This has been my most stressful class so far at UNC.
He was an amazing professor! I would take his class if you want to go past just the language requirements. He is very specific about participation as well; if you don't speak several times throughout each class period, it will be very difficult to ace his class. He inspired me to make Spanish my minor.
He makes this class a waste of time and unnecessarily difficult. Extended written homeworks due every class and a ten page essay he grades for completely perfect grammar. We spend most of class watching youtube videos. He talks down to students and undermines our presentations. The texts are all written by him with no sources. On track for an A.
I thought Professor Hermoso would be a good professor; however, one semester later and I am just happy to say that is over. Professor Hermoso made snide remarks about students in the class, forced students to speak out in class against their will, and even told one student that it isn't his job to explain the material in English.
Inconsiderate of others' needs, very assertive speaker which makes him unapproachable, and speaks to the class as if his students are fluent in Spanish. Also displays passive-aggressive behavior when the class is hesitant to answer. If you CAN take 204 with another professor, I would advise it.
Expects 100% fluidity, refuses to explain things in English, mocks students for incorrectly answering questions, calls students out for not knowing/understanding material, inconsiderate of those with personal issues, and overall just hateful! Extremely hard on grading too! If you had a good professor in 101/102/105, you will be disappointed here.
Dr. Hermoso seems like a great person, just not for teaching Spanish. As a native speaker from Spain, he expects ALOT out of his class. I see frustration in him, especially when a student doesn't understand something and he has to repeat himself. If you can't understand medium-fast pace Spanish, I don't advise this professor for you.
The class seemed really interesting (Spanish Identity through Music) but the class discussion is superficial & directed by him. Really harsh grader, you're expected to have perfect Spanish. HW before every class (anywhere from 45- 90 min). He writes all the class readings w/ no sources. Participation heavy, I talk 2-3x and have a B in participation
I know that a lot of people do not like this professor. However, although I agree that he can be intimidating and a tough grader, I was surprised to her that from students who took his Span 340 class. This is a course for majors and minors. If we are not expected to have a good grammar and advanced understanding of Spanish, then when?
Although this was a small class (Honors) I am happy that I had the chance to speak in class everyday. We always had interesting discussions and he offered a lot of feedback. Be ready to speak, regardless of accuracy. He really values your effort to participate. I gained a lot of confident through this class.
Bro I don't know why Abel gets hate. He is my favorite professor at UNC. Yeah, it's not a BREEZE and he takes participation seriously. But how else are you going to get better at speaking Spanish than speaking it?!!? Anyway, he rocks and is very funny. Absolutely will try to get into his future classes.
I will say that if you want to challenge yourself, he really pushes you to do so. That being said, he values participation but will often blatantly display his disappointment if you don't get it perfect which discourages a lot of students. I feel very judged most of the time and feel as if there's no room for mistakes to learn from.
This class is intense and difficult. The prof grades all things harshly, such as in-class writing, participation, and the oral interview. I showed up to every class and participated 4+ times per class and got a 90% on participation because everything I said wasn't 100% accurate. One person made an A on the final no one made an A on the interview.
The whole class is taught in fast paced Spanish and you are expected to keep up. I felt like the purpose of this class was almost not to learn but to just be expected to already know everything which is ridiculous like there is no room for mistakes. The prof also left some sly comments on my work -assuming correctness cheating
I took professor Muñoz-Hermoso for SPAN-261 as a first-semester freshman expecting him to be as tough as all of these reviews made him out to be. He was great and gave great feedback on all work. Id say to only take this class if youre serious about improving your Spanish. I will definitely be trying to take more of his courses in the future!
truly one of the best professors i've had. so incredibly caring and understanding. he's strict with his late hw policy but again he's very understanding and flexible. class was almost entirely participation-oriented so make sure you're comfortable speaking spanish (no English). funny guy, overall so amazing.
I had a great time in Professor Muñoz-Hermoso's class! Participation matters though. You really get out what you put into this class. It is important to actually do the required readings ahead of lectures to succeed. Muñoz-Hermoso is really accessible outside of class for questions, responds to emails with speed, and very helpful in office hours.
He made this class unreasonably difficult and graded super harshly. I participated every day and still got a 75 in participation. On tests, even if you know all the information you won't get an A unless your grammar is perfect. All the readings we did were written by him with no sources, making the structure of this class hard to follow.
Abel was such a good Spanish professor! Participation matters (!!!) and be ready to read the book a ton. Tests are pretty hard, quizzes follow the same blueprint through the semester. A huge part of your grade is whether or not you actively participate in class. Abel is super funny and makes learning Spanish fun!
His teaching instruction is fine but he is a harsh grader and expects nothing less of perfection. I am very confident in my Spanish ability and would call myself fluent in any context other than SPAN 261. He refuses to give students 100s for participation, even if you raise your hand for every single question. Never posts powerpoints, friendly
Abel is a very nice professor and he's encouraging in the learning process. My main criticism is that he is very harsh on participation grades. I would only recommend his class if you're pretty confident in your speaking and writing skills; you'll write three papers. Overall, he gives great feedback on assignments and I did learn a lot from him.
Professor Munoz was awesome. He values participation a lot in class, but don't be afraid to make mistakes. He's very caring and flexible as long as you communicate with him. Very responsive to emails and has a funny personality!
Abel is by far one of my favorite professors. He may seem harsh at first, but he's actually quite generous with his grading. The main thing you need to work extra hard for is participation (and I'm talking several times every class). I had him for 204 too, ended with an A+! I will say, what you put in is what you get out. Learned a lot from him!
Abel is an amazing professor and explained concepts well. He tries his best to make class enjoyable and gives excellent feedback. Participation matters and as long as you try your best, that's all that really matters.
Profesor Abel is an absolute delight. I looked forward to his class every day that I had him because of his bright personality and sense of humor. He made my day on several occasions. 361 is a great class with really interesting concepts, and he does a great job encouraging class discussion. I 100% recommend him!
Abel is an awesome professor. His class is a good environment. He grades tough on participation, but he is the best span prof i have taken at UNC. He has pushed me in my speaking ability and helped me learn so much. While he is a tough participation grader, the class isn't hard and it's easy to get an A. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Profesor Abel is a great teacher! He actually makes sure you understand the material. The class is fast-paced and attendance is mandatory because he grades for participation, but he is the best Spanish teacher I've ever had. We had to write an argumentative essay that we got the whole semester to work on, but the class itself was very manageable.
cool guy. lots of work but it really is worth it
Most amazing, kind-hearted Spanish professor. Very understanding of students and does his best to help them in any circumstance. Any class he teaches would be amazing, and he needs to be your top choice for Spanish. Def grades for participation, so TALK during class. Keep yapping. Tests are slightly difficult, so TAKE NOTES and study, esp for 261.
Participation really matters in this class, which is hard if you're shy because to get a good grade on it you have to participate many times each class. The paper easy to do ok on, tests are hard but fair. He is funny but I didn't feel super engaged by class activities. Reading was pretty boring and the textbook assignments can take a long time.
Abel expects students to participate heavily in class. He's a great instructor, he challenges you to learn and wants students to enhance their Spanish skills. Be prepared to have lots of homework; the course uses two different homework platforms with assignments due before every single class period. Abel was awesome!
I loved his class! I took 340 so I could have him as a professor again. He grades participation very harshly, so be prepared to speak as much as possible (at least 3-4x a class). However, I thought he graded everything else fairly and you could tell he was passionate about the topic and wanted us to enjoy the class/learn. Favorite UNC professor!
SPAN261 is the second class I've taken with Abel, and I've really enjoyed both! Participation is very important, and he expects you to participate at least twice each class period. However, he takes note if he can tell you're trying. I was 0.25 percentage points below an A and he went back and increased a couple of my lower grades to get me to an A
Most arrogant professor I have had. Gives out broad feedback just criticizing your work that isn't helpful- just makes you feel bad. He's super rude to his students. Mistakes are not allowed in his class and you will get publicly embarrassed by him if you make one. My worst experience at this school, made me dread the days I had his class.
Abel is a professor that you can tell really wants people to improve. His class is tough and there is a ton of very fast-paced content, but if you put in the work, go to office hours, do extra credit and participate you will do well. Participation is extremely important and you have to work through nervousness. Sometimes he is a little intimidating
Abel is an amazing Spanish professor. This is a difficult class and will be difficult regardless of the professor, but if you put in effort to learn the grammatical concepts and participate you'll be okay. He makes the material interesting and has fun class activities. Participation is important, but he won't dock points for mistakes when you talk.
Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy A! The professor can come off extremely intimidating, but deep down he cares about his students learning Spanish. You are going to have to put in a lot of work to do well, but it's possible and there is room for error. If you truly work hard and let him know you're trying, you'll get through it.
Best Spanish professor I have had. He's kind, interactive with students, creates fun lectures, and overall I learned a lot in this class. Participation is expected, and he can be harsh when grading this, so do participate whenever possible. You don't have to be right, you just have to try. Information can be hard sometimes, but still manageable.
Really cares about participation and is honestly passive aggressive about it. He uses a flipped classroom model. The course has a good array of assignments. Overall a solid Spanish course, just make sure you participate.
Worked hard to engage all students and cultivate a positive learning environment. Participation matters, but doesn't hold you back if you are succeeding on tests and quizzes. Very straightforward with assignments and extremely considerate of other obligations. Definitely would take again, as many peers are taking him again next semester.
Profe is very passionate about the course material, and he was really nice (he brought snacks for the final)! He's a somewhat tough grader for exams, the exam's covered a lot (info from lectures and readings) and they were essay formatted, but he wasn't a harsh grader for homework or the group project (you make your own groups).
If you feel like you need help with learning, or have doubt about your Spanish, I would not recommend taking class with Abel. He made me dread coming to class, and on several occasions, even rolled his eyes and huffed at me when I did not know how to answer his questions. I\
If you felt like SPAN203 was easy and you need FC-Create, I recommend taking SPAN204 with Abel. Similar to SPAN203, there is textbook homework, quizzes, midterms, a podcast project, and a final, so one bad grade can't ruin your final grade. Make sure to participate every class. Abel also begins every class with a song which is fun.
I felt like I learned a decent amount from this class and I liked the movies we watched, but this was probably the most disorganized class I've ever taken. I was constantly confused about deadlines and expectations. However, professor Munoz-Hermoso was very kind and easy to reach outside of class. There wasn't a ton of work for the summer class.
Abel was amazing as a professor and is extremely easy to reach outside of class. Participation is very important but if you talk a few times a day and engage, the participation grade wont be much of a problem. Essay was the hardest part of the class. 100% am looking for Abel as a professor in the future. He's also hilarious.
I loved this man, very happy and go lucky, makes funny jokes. He makes class engaging and gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to your written work. Not a tough grader but expects participation in class. You can tell he has a passion for Spanish, teaching does not feel like a chore to him, cares about your learning. Reopened homeworks for me.
Amazing class and professor. He cares a lot about his students and their success in the course, and he is very passionate about teaching. Grading, assignments, tests, and quizzes were very fair. My Spanish improved so much from this class, so if you are thinking about taking it, definitely take it with him!
This guy is the goat. I took him and can honestly say he was one of the best Spanish teachers I have ever had. If you are a student you need to take him (like trust me). His lectures were fun, although the content is hard he makes it fun to learn, and really wants to see you succeed as a Spanish speaker and in the class.
He was super engaging in class and makes sure we had fun. Participation matters though and tests are very fair/no curveballs. He also plays a new spanish song at the beginning of class which was fun. Also he gives lots of extra credit opportunities.
