He's not a bad teacher per say, but he is very impersonal and not very helpful. Not a teacher you will find very likeable.
stay away
math sux
he teaches very well, if you want to actually learn calc, take this guy, homework isnt manditory, grade is based on 3 tests, thats it
He's a very good calc teacher. Only 3 exams. Just study your notes.
very smart man...very hard to understand...not friendly or approachable
Poor teaching ability. Not very likable, and very hard grader. Speaks with a thick accent.
The way he teaches is alittle boring, but his tests are easy. He's a good teacher.
Hard to understand at times but still a very good teacher. He goes over everything several times to make sure everyone understands it. I would def. recommend him.
He knows his stuff really well but is difficult to understand because of his accent. He gives alot of notes and even when he's not there, you will have a substitute teaching you. Not very friendly if you ask me, but he seems like a dedicated teacher.
If you take him you will really know what your doing
If I filled my mouth with marbles, I would still be easier to understand than this guy.Maybe he was better with calc.,but real analysis was horrible with this guy. Gave a test question out of the book which I wrote down the exact answer..still wrong!!!
There are professor I would take at Rowan, and he isnt one of them.
This man is extremely arrogant, yet he doesn't possess the mental prowess to buttress his foible. Fortunately, Calculus is an easy subject for me.
he was horrible. always messed up the material as he teached and us students had to correct him or teach him the problem. i wouldnt even tell my worst enemy to take him. ur better off teaching yourself. hes not friendly either!
Who wants to fail? If you look up dooshbag in the dictionary, you are sure to see his picture
his notes are simple and easy to understand. the material hasn't confused me yet. unfortunately he does make a lot of mistakes and his accent makes it difficult at times.
Worst calc teacher of all time!!!!
Damn, this might have been the biggest mistake of my entire life. This guy turns math into an almost form of torture. Still passing though, learned more in pre-calc.
I know everyone hates him, but i failed calc twice and passed the third time with him. So there are worse teachers in the department. He was very helpful.
maybe he'd be okay if he looked at the class on occassion and knew at least one person's name
I thought this class was fairly easy, but that may be just because its cont. math, not calc. but he moves along slowly and easily so I understood everything and u get 10 pts added to ur overall grade for attendance.. not too bad of a class
hard to understand- it was a hard class. he used to roll his own cigaretts on the break at night... But I got a B so I'm not complaining
What is this guy doing teaching I don't know. He knows the subject but not how to convey it to students. Overall a nice guy though.
He can't teach that's it
needs to learn how to speak ENGLISH
His methods assume you know the section already. He doesn't EXPLAIN the process, just reiterates the book.
His tests are hard so study hard for them. Do the examples, over and over again. Communication skills on answering questions and feedback are lacking. Take him if you want an “either you know it or you don’t” test. He grades fairly and does give ample tim
I actually thought this teacher was more up front with what's on the test. He is not so clear in his lectures but as long as you do all the homework problems two times or more you'll get an A. Didn't like the mathematica project which takes up alot of tim
cannot teach, very hard to understand.
Not super easy or super hard. Not hard to understand when it comes to his accent. An average professor all around.
Very unwilling to help. Can't understand what he is saying half the time and his hand-writting is barely visable, this makes it hard to learn anything. Wouldn't recommend him.
He is very straightforward and helpful, gave us an example test and gives extra credit before each test. Do the work and pay attention in class and you'll be fine
nice guy who gives extra credit and i am thoroughly entertained by hys accent very class
Wwwwooorrrrkkkkkkk....(imagine his accent saying that)
stay away form him at all costs. does not speak english very well. tests confusing. grade based on three tests thats it.
Great professor, and is always there to help.
abay is not as bad as people make him out to be. even though you can't always understand his speech, he knows what he is talking about. you basically have to do no work in order to fail. take this class.
whenever i was having a hard time on a problem in his class, he'll go right over it. there were times when he'll go over homework and ask if there were any problems. it's true that it's hard to understand him clearly. all you have to do is ask him go over the problem, he'll do it.
Hard to understand! Not helpful.
horrible teacher
Hard to understand sometimes but takes a lot of time in every class to see if we have problems with homework and stuff. Tests can be hard if you don't work on the homework so do it and everything should be fine.
He really is not that hard to understand at all. He always makes sure you understand what he is teaching. Pay attention, do the homework, take notes and you will be fine. He is just an overall nice guy.
He seems like an ok guy but he's a terrible teacher. He doest actually teach, he reads his notes to the class and expects everyone to understand. The entire grade is based on 3 tests that are not only hard but just difficult to understand.
Good Teacher!
He seems like a good teacher u jsut really have to pay attention since he is kinda hard to understand
Avoided my phone calls and attempts to meet with him for months. Crazy hard to understand.
Usually covered in chalk. Just writes on the board and doesn't really look at the students in his class...ever. If you're lucky his son will randomly show up at the door and everyone gets out of class.
Very unclear in his teaching style. Homework found in text is very different than the test. I hated every minute of his class.
If you pay attention and do the work you will get a good grade. His example probs will most often show up on tests!!
His example probs will most often show up on tests. His list of homework is neat and covers the basic and little more for this course. He has good style of presenting stuff if you pay attention.
I understood everything when he taught it to us and did the homework, yet none of the stuff seemed to work out on the test. He DOES NOT do extra credit and there are only 3 tests a semester!
Great professor, well balanced. His tests are good, good grader. explains, but hard due to accent. Highly recommended.
He is a terrific professor. He knows his stuff, and teaches it to others well. Prof. Abay also gives lots of extra credit and quizzes that help boost your test grades.
Very hard to understand because of his accent, not approachable in any means, seems like he doesn't care about how his students are doing. Doesn't know anyone's name in the class, tests are extremely hard. Says there will be extra credit and quizzes but never gives it out and grade is based only on 3 tests. HORRIBLE TEACHER!
Straightforward. Easy to understand, and gives homework sheets that will match the tests almost exactly. Goes over homework problems before almost every class. Tests are simpler than homework usually. He usually looks like a mad scientist and is covered in chalk, but that just made the class fun for me.
Anyone who badmouthed Abay was an idiot. Although his accent is an obstacle, he teaches at an understandable speed and explains everything. The only way you could do badly in his class if you get lazy and decide to do none of the nonrequired homework problems. I'd reccomend him as long as you actually try.
Abay is a very smart and nice man. However I had him for contemporary math and I wouldn't suggest him for that class. He was very condscending and not much help. The class istelf was very boring. His tests were also very hard. He reviews but buts trick questions in. If you are looking for an easy math class, stay away.
Take home quizzes helped my grade a great deal. Willing to go over problems if asked. Grade is based on 3 tests and a handful of quizzes. Would recommend above other profs for Calc II
Dr. Abay shops at Kohl's! He is very by-the-book and not available on Fridays apparently.
His accent sometimes makes it ery hard to understand him. Overall though he's a very good teacher. He made things quite clear as long as you really payed attention. The tests were a bit hard, but the class itself wasn't to much trouble. I would reccomend it.
Proboblity
When teaching, skips steps that he thinks are "common sense", so you have trouble learning the material from your notes. Barely gives partial credit. Gives take home quizzes but never goes over correct answers, nor for the tests. Gives a group project using computer program called Mathematica, but never teaches how to use it.
he's a nice man in general, very smart, but he's not a good teacher. If you're good at math and are good with numbers you may do well. For me on the other hand, it was very difficult and i struggled through it. The sad part is, at some points i thought i knew what i was doing. but when i got the results ... it showed that i didnt have a clue
Contemporary Math- Accent hard to understand but writes on the board so as long as you copy it down you can usually understand. Lets you use notes on tests and quizzes and uses problems from homework and quizzes on the tests. If you do the homework and ask questions from them you should do fine.
i came and took differential equations at rowan as a summer class. i found abay to be extremely rude. he did not answer emails/calls and when you questioned him about how he marked a problem he got pissed and told you because it was wrong. doesnt explain anything. NO PARTIAL CREDIT at all and he rushes thru everything. skips TONS of steps. AVOID!
difficult to understand. u can have a notesheet for tests, but many trick questions. about of the people in my class dropped, and most of the remaining are borderline failing like me. maybe hes better teacher at higher maths for math majors. he seems slightly impatient toward those that do not understand. avoid him unless ur a math major.
Pretty decent teacher. Gives about 5 points e.c. on each test. DOES NOT GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT ON TESTS/QUIZZES. And his tests are very hard. At the end of the semester you will know your stuff, but your grade will be less than modest.
its a little hard to understand his accent sometimes but i think he taught thoroghly the tests and quizzes were easy if you did the homework. i thought it was an easy class. i got an A and barely studied, and you are allowed to use a sheet of notes for the tests and quizzes no mid term or final. i would take him again.
I thought this class was an easy A, though I am a math major now. His accent is hard to understand at first but you get used to it. Just take notes in class, the quizzes and tests are straight from the text and notes. You can use a cheat sheet for every exam.
I think professor abay is a cool guy, eh teaches math and doesn't afraid of anything. Srsly, though, I took this class in the summer and it was okay. Tests were kind of hard, all multiple choice but not easy multiple choice. Crazy accent makes it hard to understand him at first but you get used to it. Overall, a fine teacher.
Somewhat difficult to understand, horrible teacher. If you dont have a good math background, do not take him. I can't learn a thing from his teaching methods. Almost done with the year and I havent even found out where his accent came from
Do not take him for math if you struggle as it is. This guy's class is painful and incomprehensible. I learned absolutely nothing and attended every freaking class. You can't understand a word he says, he sounds like BORAT. I regret EVER taking his class or meeting him. I had two friends teach me the entire semester in two hours.
worst teacher ever. test are extremely hard. covers so much material and not even half of it is on the test. doesnt review before the test or explain anything thats going to be on it. avoid him at all costs!
Horrible.I had taken calc 1 in high school and that is the only reason I got through the class. I had to teach myself the material all semester. He doesnt explain things well.In the begining he was teaching the material wrong! Don't take him unless you HAVE to. What he says is going to be on the tests isn't. Overall worse math class ive ever taken!
I originally took this course at community and failed. The prof was the worst! So I took it again at Rowan, and Professor Abay was MUCH better. His accent makes things hard at times, but he's willing to help or at least repeat things. His tests are challenging though. The homework is a must to pass. I assumed otherwise and did poor on my first test
I had abay for college algebra. I am not good at math at all unless I have a really good professor. I saw him three times for help and he still didnt know my name. He is hard to understand as well because he's east african (not indian like everyone thinks) and he talks about increezing and decreezing parAbolas.
I almost did not take Calc 2 with Prof Abay because of the reviews on here, but I am glad I did. I thought he did a good job explaining the material. He provided time to answer questions from the homework and let us make cheat sheets for the exams. Yes he has an accent, but it's not bad. He is a little obsessed with Mathematica though.
hard to understand. breezes through everything and leaves people behind. tests and quizzes are hard, short, and worth a lot of your grade. lots of textbook work at one time. no cheat sheet to speak of, and no multi-choice.
Worst teacher ever. everyone in my class was taking it for 2nd and third time. Some stuff you get but he is hard to understand and blocks the board when he writes. Says he will help but sends you to the tutor
Professor Abay is not as bad as everyone says. He explains everything really well and lets you have a cheat sheet on the test. He gives time to go over any homework problems and he makes sure everyone gets the material. I recommend him.
This guy is hard and oldfashioned and tough to understand due to his accent. He flys through the material and you will have to study very hard, I went to tutoring and my tutor did not even know the material and I had to teach her it. He does let you do take home quizes though which is good and test sheet. I tried very hard and got a B+.
i dont know what all these negative comments are about. he's bright, and he's fun. i did extremely well and i'm no mathematician. if you do your job as a student you do well. you get used to his accent. personally i loved the man...i wish i could take more classes with him!!
He is hard to understand both through his accent and through his teaching style. If you are not a strong math student to begin with stay away from Abay. He constantly says things like "if you do not understand this, you should not be in this class" rather than attempting to make things clearer.
I am not very good at math, and I do not know one person in my class who is getting an A, most of us are in the c through d range. In class I get it, one the tests and quizes (take home which is a bonus) I do not. all of the people I show the quizes to, are baffled, included a math major and my manager in a money office.
He is the best teacher in the world! i owe my amazing and successful career all to him for teaching me linear algebra and calculus so well! Thanks so much Dr! :)
he doesn't care to help students, he is simply just teaching because it's his job. his accent isn't understandable and he makes students feel stupid if they don't understand what he is teaching.
Avoid like the plague.
Not bad. Lots of take home assessments. Go to class to understand the chapters.
really good prof! explained things well & made class pretty easy. do all the HW and read the book & you'll be fine.
can't understand a word he says. offers help but doesn't work with students. do not take him. however, he gives extra credit but barely.
Hard to understand. Contemporary Math is useless. Take stats or something else. No real math, just theories.
one of the worst teachers. I have ever had. I took Calculus two with him and dropped it after three weeks because instead of trying to learn the material I was stuck having to try to decipher what he was saying since his english is not well spoken at all
really good prof. He explains things well but can be a bit harsh when you get stuff wrong. do the HW & pay attention & you'll be fine.
He is a very hard teacher. Definitely use homework and reviews for studying. He does give sample test prior to test which are very helpful. Also has a very strong accent.
He was terrible, writes small so sit in front of room, likes to block what he is writing... tests are very difficult, he let us have open book but questions looked nothing like what was in the book, lecture comes straight from book word for word too avoid if you can
He copy most of his lecture out of the book, but he gave extra credit and his hw wasn't graded. Midterm and final make up 60% of your grade though. He wasn't a bad teacher.
Does a lot of the lectures straight out of the book. Doing the homework will ensure you do well. A bit boring later on in the semester. To his defense it was an 8AM.
Alright overall. Uses Mathematica constantly during lectures (incredibly annoying). Would of gotten at least a C+ if i did my hw. Tests were hard but not unfair. Cheet sheets allowed. Had groups for mathematica projects but half dropped the class which meant i pretty much had to do the whole thing. Hate mathematica more than the class
He is a great teacher. Always gives examples and explains lessons thoroughly. I also had him for calculus II.
Not a bad class if you study. He is a little difficult to understand at times but if you study it is an easy A or B.
Great professor!
Looks at the book and board the whole class and copies straight out of the book onto the board. Ridiculously hard to understand. Not that hard of a class if he just actually taught us. He starts a section and does one example then moves on. No questions. Don't take him!
I thought he was a wonderful professor. One of the best math professors I've had. He follows the book exactly, is very organized with his notes/lectures, and explains things with great examples. I would definitely recommend taking him! He makes math not so scary and more simpler for those who generally do not like math.
He's very clear in explaining everything and is always ready to answer any question.
He is probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. He does not explain what he puts up on the board, he talks like he is doing it in his head, his tests and quizzes are nothing what he teaches. He does not respond to emails and he is extremely hard to understand. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!! or be prepared to teach yourself
Teaches right from the book (which is already hard to understand). Bad accent. Writes too small and doesn't explain what he's doing. Tests and quizzes are fair. He doesn't help at all. Mathematica is more of an annoyance then a learning tool. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He isn't horrible. But he isn't great. The only grades are a midterm and a final and a few quizzes. I got a B on the midterm and it was impossible to get an A in the class because how weird he weights things. His accent isnt that bad and his teaching style is ok, but he hates questions and grades ridiculously. Made an easy A class difficult
the best professor
Decent professor. Follows the book when lecturing. Grades were a midterm, final, quizzes, and attendance. Quizzes/exams are usually straightforward with one or two trickier problems that make sure you actually understand the material. Allows a page of notes on exams. Show up, pay attention, and keep up with the homework and you should do fine.
quizzes are super easy and there's a lot of them so it's okay if you don't do well on some. tests are harders but you can use cheat sheets. he has a heavy accent but it's entertaining. he's a nice guy and will help you whenever you need it. gives homework but doesn't check it
Great teacher. Highly recommended.
hard grader and rarely helps. very difficult to bring up grade. would not take again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU HAVE NEVER TAKEN CALCULUS IN HIGH SCHOOL. He is terrible and unclear about everything. The only thing saving my grade was tutoring twice a week. If you happen to be in his class, do not sit on his left. You will not see anything. Also, doing the homework is not helpful. Allows cheat sheets on tests.
great teacher. hw is not manditory however i would find it hard to do well in the class if i didnt complete it. different style of teaching where he just teaches what you need to know and no other BS. two test and a final. If you pay attention and understand what hes saying youll get the HW. If you get the HW youll ace the quizzes and youre golden
Overall, he is a good teacher. Some people may have trouble understanding his lectures due to how fast he goes or his accent, but if you ask a specific question he will answer it thoroughly. If you do the homework corresponding for each lecture you will be fine with the quizzes.
Took him for Calc T&A. He only gives two major tests, the midterm and final which count for 60% of your grade. He follows the syllabus and gives easy quizzes after every 3 or 4 sections. Homework isn't mandatory but helps you prepare for the tests. He makes time to answer questions. Definitely recommend taking him if you're interested in math
Do not miss quizzes Make sure to keep up and preferably stay ahead Be on his good side
On the Mid-term he gave us up to 10 points extra credit if we completed a take home quiz with the right answers. Quizzes are easy if you review your notes and he doesn't check hw
He kind of just does calc at you, its not a particularly interactive experience. If you know anything about calc, his tests are really easy. If you don't it may take you a couple of times to get the hang of his tests but you will. Only puts the easiest questions.
Although Professor Abay has the earliest scheduled period, and he might be a bit boring... he teaches the material and makes you understand everything perfectly. He doesn't throw any curve balls, he is a straightforward man. I would take coffee with his class, and definitely take him again.
Professor Abay is a nice guy, but he really isn't a great professor. He moves very fast through the material because he thinks it is easy and everyone else should too. He will give extra credit which is nice. Most likely would not take again. Also, his class is at 7:35 AM.
Very difficult course, and not made any easier by having to show up at 7:35 AM. Overall a very nice professor who knows exactly what he is talking about, although his lectures tend to drag on a lot. I would probably choose someone else for this class given how hard it is, and that early class time doesn't help anyone out. Decent professor overall.
Lectures are long and boring. His explanations can be a bit confusing especially as early as he has his classes. But he does a good job outlining what will be on the quizzes and exams especially with the review sheets he gives. Takes work to get a good grade. Wouldn't exactly recommend but isn't a bad option especially if you're a morning person.
The professor showed up, made the lecture from the book, clearly understood the lecture very well, but then went over it at a very quick pace. Only grades came from a few assignments and weekly quizzes with three tests. I took him for Calc 2. Calculator use is entirely acceptable everywhere and for calculations, except the work has to be shown.
Abay is a bad teacher, just doesn't know how to explain things to students. He has a heavy accent that often makes it hard to pay attention or understand what he is trying to say.
Professor Abay's speaking is very unclear which makes it hard to understand him. He always asks for someone to walk him through the steps of a problem but he does it himself which makes it difficult to learn. He does a lot wrong and students have to correct him , even if its something small. Not to difficult though if you've taken calculus in HS
Extremely hard to understand. Also very belittling whenever you ask a question or don't understand something. He expects you to understand everything that is going on in lecture and gets mad when you don't. Wouldn't take his class again
If you go to class you'll be fine. He goes through stuff pretty quickly, but is willing to go over problems with you if you don't understand. Gives homework but never checks it, it just helps to do it to study for quizzes. Only has a Midterm and final as tests, but they are exactly like the review he gives you and like the quizzes.
Not a good professor, he tends to speed through notes extremely quickly. The final grade is only tests and quizzes and nothing else. Many people dropped his class due to their treatments and difficulty with the course
Class at 735 is a killer. He isnt a very nice guy at all, and you cant really talk to him about class. Reads STRAIGHT FROM TEXTBOOK. Does only certain problems from each section and his quizzes only have 4-5 questions. One question wrong and it kills your grade. Never clarifies what will be on tests, and they are hard. Mathematica, worst thing ever
Professor Abay was a fairly good professor. He had very detailed and organized notes each lecture, which made learning new content pretty easy. He had 3 major tests throughout the semester and the final was not cumulative. Took calculus in high school but didnt get credit. Perfect course to take for a refresh on calculus. Would take him again.
If you haven't had calc before I would not take him. Does not explain the concepts well enough.
Prof. Abay is not a very good professor, mainly because he flies through material only going over 2-3 examples each section. There are two major exams (midterm and final) and multiple quizzes. However, he does drop the lowest quiz grade and will curve exam grades if they're low. Take a better professor if you're not the best at math.
He is a really hard Calc teacher. Since he is an incredibly smart teacher, he assumes that everyone automatically understands what he is saying. He flies through the material and is very critical on tests and quizzes. You will survive this class as long as you keep up with the homework and show up to class. Good luck.
I took professor abay over the summer. It was calc 2 over 5 weeks so it was challenging. This class was very challenging. He gave quizzes often but told you prior what the quiz would be on. He is definitely one of the better professors at Rowan. He is also very approachable for help.
Professor Abay is great. There are two tests, a midterm and a final worth 30% of your grade each. The tests are very easy and he gives a great review for each. Theres 8 quizzes that are easy and announced that are combined for 30% of your grade (he drops the lowest). The final 10% is attendance. Homework is never checked. Would def. take again.
Took him for Calc 1 at 7:35am. This is the earliest class Rowan offers. I got a B+ in his class. His tests are pretty easy and straight forward. There are a bunch of quizzes and he drops the lowest one. Homework isn't checked but I would suggest doing it to study for the exams/quizzes
This guy does not care at all if anyone passes, he won't teach you much, and if you have a question he won't explain anything, he just does the problem again. There were 35 people in my class, but only 4 people got above a C on his second exam, multiple people got 3%, and he wouldn't tell us the average because "it's embarrassing". Take Ich Lee
I have taken Dr. Abay for both Calculus 1 and 2. Class structure is the same for both. The lowest quiz is dropped. There are no pop quizzes. All exams have extra credit questions. The final is non-cumulative. You don't need the access code for the book. Abay is a very kind man; I would take him a third time if I could.
Took his Calc2 course in the summer, super easy A. Had to take it as a retake because I got a D the first time and passed his class with flying colors. Has a bunch of quizzes but drops the lowest, 2 group projects which he will always check before, and 3 tests that he always did a full review for.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He does not TEACH Calculus 1 . He doesn't even look at students, he never makes eye contact and basically is speaking to himself when he's on the board "teaching" lecture material. He expects you to have the TI-89 calculator & I had TI-84 and told me he couldn't help me because I don't have the other calculator. Terrible
I had Dr. Abay for Calc II. The class was extremely lecture-heavy. He is very thorough in his lectures but you need to have a very good foundation in Calc I. He will only use very technical terms and won't break it down further unless asked. The quizzes are a very good reference for the tests. HIs questions are almost always like examples in class.
DO NO TAKE HIM. He doesn't let you take a picture of the board. No electronics at anytime and he will call you out on it. He has a thick accent and is hard to understand. He goes through the problems very fast and when given classwork he gives you about 10 seconds to figure it out. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He's a horrible teacher and he sucks at teaching. If you take him, drop him IMMEDIATELY!!! You can't understand his teaching and he doesn't care to help you or anything. You basically have to teach yourself which is dumb and stupid since your the one paying for the class and he's not helping you learn the stuff in the class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM He has a thick accent and is hard to understand. You cannot use any electronics without getting called out. He goes very fast in his lectures and when he gives you classwork he gives you about 10 seconds to do it. He doesn't check homework it's only to help you (only time you use the book). DO NOT TAKE HIM
Dr. Abay's lectures were somewhat dry, but he legitimately cares about the success of his students. Took him for Calc 1, and never was concerned with my grades. Mathematica assignment and quizzes took some weight away from the 3 class exams, which I was grateful for. Most exams had easy extra credit. The worst part was the 7:35 am class start!
Thick accent but you get used to it. A handful of quizzes he emails you and prepares you for. They are so easy, exactly like the powerpoints and what we do in class. Lectures can get boring but its worth it. Do not NEED textbook but recommended to help you. Lowest quiz dropped, midterm/final you get a page of notes. Final not cumulative.
Hes horrible. He zooms through material and expects you to know as much as he does. Hes not a mean guy, but he gives little wiggle room for mistake. If you are not a good test taker DO NOT take this course with this professor. You will have to teach yourself all of the material, so be prepared. He wont give credit if you dont use his method.
3 tests, each worth 20%. Theyre not hard if you know the content, do the review problems and youll be fine. Usually curved 5-10 points. Drops lowest quiz. 2 Mathematica group projects. Hes a good and thorough teacher but kinda rude, dont let it get to you. Took it at 7:35, its early but he always ends early. I would definitely recommend
Terrible teacher. I cant begin to describe how bad he is. He is hard to understand, cant teach, and is very rude. He blames you for being wrong even when he is wrong. I cant believe he is a teacher because he cant teach. I study for that class harder than my other classes and i got a D. If you get him, then change immediately because you wont pass
Dr. Abay's teaching style is rather dry. He follows the notes and teaches as a book would. His explanations are strictly mathematical based, making it difficult to understand if you don't get what the problem is asking. He does, however, go over homework problems if asked about. If you knew your stuff you were good, but otherwise it could be rough.
He alone is the worst reviewed professor in the entire math department for a number of reasons. His class is structured around rushing a lecture and providing no context or help on what will be on his quiz. Each quiz contains 3-4 question that if you get one wrong its an immediate tank to your grade, he is rude and belittles students regularly.
Expects you to know the material being lectured in class before that class. What's the point in the teacher?
Not too shabby. He's got a deep accent but its audible. Just pay attention and you should be fine. However, if you aren't good at math I probably wouldn't recommend him because after a while he gets tired of explaining it. Also drops lowest grade.
Lectures were very dull and professor himself didnt ever use camera over zoom. Hard to follow and understand lectures. Test were very difficult will need to study even if its online. Not enough time given for tests.
Dr. Abay is a great teacher, I'm not sure what all these bad reviews are for. If you're lazy and expect an easy A, keep it moving. I learned a great deal from this class and enjoyed it. Everything is straightforward and to the point. Actually study and pay attention, you will pass!
Little time on quizzes. Heavy on projects.
tough grader. does not help struggling students. no extra credit.
His lectures are right out of the book, so the book is pretty useless. Exams are the major part, a lot of the questions on there are really different from the assignments/lectures, so I always felt unprepared. Although this class is very straightforward: Lectures > Assignments > Exams and he's decent at teaching the topics.
You can't understand a word this man says. On top of that he isn't good with lectures and gives hard exams. When you need help don't count on him for it.
This professor doesn't give any leniency whatsoever and is very very very tough on grading any sort of assignments. Very minor mistakes will get points taken off on every tests. Throughout the whole semester didn't get anything higher than a 74 on a test because of simple mistakes that could have been written off. Overall, not very caring
I had him online, so he wasn't too bad. He knew his stuff and his videos were okay, but barely prepared you for the homework and tests. I would have to go to outside resources to help me because he would teach us the smallest thing of that topic and then give us a problem that requires more than what he gave us in the lecture. Also a harsh grader.
Lectures are detailed, can be funny, and make textbook unnecessary, but too simple versus assignments/exams. 100% needed outside study. HUGE difficulty jump in exams, they are 2-parters and majority of grade. Replies well but office hours are hard to get. Little/no extra credit. Only take him if you're already proficient or will self-study a ton.
Don't take him if you don't want to have a bad grade. He is a really harsh grader, gives extra hard questions in quizzes/ exams compared to the lecture videos, and won't admit his own mistakes. He made me take two exams twice (with only 70% off the earned score) and his exam software/website crashed during one exam and he blamed that on me too. :(
Horribly strict, convoluted work submission methods (printing questions, handwriting answers, then scanning and reuploading), too many assignments, does not ease into anything, tests are 60% of your grade, requires full work shown or you get a zero. Quite possibly the worst experience I've had in college so far.
This class was so unnecessarily hard for absolutely no reason. The grading makes no sense, half the time since it was an online class i used my notes for the exams and still got bad grades. I passed by the skin of my teeth somehow and Im not sure how.
Horrible professor. Not understanding at all. I took this course online so learning the work through lecture videos was naturally harder. The professor is a very tough grader and if you do not do it the way they want, you are losing credit. does not take late work even with doctors notes. DO NOT TAKE I WARN YOU.
Dr Abay was not very accessible even though this was an online course. This course requires a lot of outside studying as the tests are way harder than the lecture material given. Overall, you really need to study if you want a good grade in this class, even if its online.
DO NOT TAKE! The way this class is structured grades you below average. Almost everything is open ended. Do not even contact this professor for help on anything--- he isn't helpful at all nor does he care.
No matter how much I studied or practiced the material I ended up with bad grades. It is very hard to understand the lectures, and Professor Abay does not help you. He has an attitude when you ask him for help almost acting as if we should already know the material perfectly. I recommend taking this course in person with a different professor
This is by far the worst professor I have ever experienced. i had her for reasoning with functions and stat. She is awful, I do NOT recommend unless this is a last resort, she doesn't provide late work, or extra credit, no help through email and very discouraging.
excessive hw, exams aren't based on the hw. he gets mad if you email him for clarification on assignments. if you want to pass do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Abera's class requires a lot of self-study. The lectures are helpful, but the exams are much harder. unstuck study and the free textbook were essential for staying on top of the material.
Takes days to respond to emails and sometimes never responded. Didnt update his modules so when I was confused about something and emailed him, he responded rudely and tried to gaslight me saying I should have read about it originally when he never actually updated it and wasn't in canvas. Didnt open quizzes so we cant learn from what we got wrong.
