Im not going to be disrespectful, but I love Math with all my heart but this professor messed me up real bad. The book he uses costs around 120 dollars and we dont even use it! The book contains this webassign access code a code to create an account where you do online homework assignments. If i could drop I would.
-sleeping- ok now that i am awake. This man is absolutely bland. He is monotone, boring, and shows no enthusiasm. He forces us to buy a textbook that we never used once. He has an accent and is hard to comprehend. Overall dont take this man...
This guy is horrible. Algebra is hard enough already it doesnt help at all the hard accent he has. Incredibly monotone with no interest. To anyone who struggles with math AVOID THIS CLOWN
Luckily i learned this stuff in high school or i would not of passed. He did not show up for half the semester so we had subs teaching us. In my opinion, the subs were better at teaching. He said we needed the book but he only checked homework once and that was the first week. Also, he has a strong accent is monotonous.
He was only there half the semester. Usually doesn't understand the content. Takes his notes directly from the book, and moves on. He is very patient, very understanding, and his tests are pretty easy. He will extend stuff if you email him, and he usually replies to e-mails within a few hours. It is a very "help yourself" kind of environment.
I REALLY suck at Math, I've taken Finite 5 times and failed/dropped every time. I FINALLY PASSED w/ JIRU! Test Q's all come from his examples,TAKE GOOD NOTES. Quiz's are a breeze. Ended up w a B (I never received a B in math)He's a pushover, ask and you shall receive (1pg notes on tests, open notes on quiz). He grades HW, but it's only 5%.
I never thought I could get an A in a math class...before I took Jiru's precalculus class. All it takes is a little effort to pass and you will. Go to every lecture you can, as his test questions come from his lecture notes (no surprises), do well on the hw (team up!) and bring good notes to his tests (he allows them) and you'll get an A easily.
I have struggled with math for a very long time, but this man makes it worse. His thick accent makes this extremely difficult, along with his lack of people skills. If you ask him a question he brushes you off and then if you approach him about it again he becomes angry. He also speaks down to his students, my recommendation is stay far far away
Not hard since it was just Algebra. I wouldn't want him to be my next math prof. His notes aren't helpful. Not many show up unless it's the day of the exam. Hmk is online which he never bothers explaining. Book's not needed but the online access code's used.
He is a good teacher. He has an accent so it may be a little hard to understand at times. However he is very laid back and will help you with anything just be attentive, TAKE NOTES (his tests are from the notes) and stop by office hrs. Make sure to follow the book as he lectures or you may get confused easily. He goes into great detail w/ concepts
Easy A, but boring class for me cos I learnt this stuff in high school. Hes got a bit of an accent but hes a good professor. He will do anything as long as you ask him too. WE had a take home midterm and we asked him to drop the lowest grade and he did it. Take notes in class cos the test questions are from the notes .
If you've taken Pre-Cal in high school, this class will be fairly easy. If you haven't, you must attend class, take notes, and do your hw. Believe me, people did terrible mainly because they gave up on Mr. Jiru. Hard to understand at first, but you will get used to it. Tests are fair, and pretty good with communicating outside of class. Good guy.
STAY AWAY. He is a horrible teacher. When asked questions (especially in class) He seemed to get annoyed and would brush your question off/go around the initial question. No clarity. No communication. I taught myself the whole semester. Thanks for nothing.
This class is relatively easy. All you have to do is attend class, take notes, and understand the lesson. All homeworks and quizzes are online, giving you alot of space and time to do them. 1 of the 3 midterms is take-home. Finally, he gives extra credit and takes off from the average your lowest homework and quiz. Just understand the material.
Jiru's lectures were confusing if you were not exposed to the material at all in high school. He gives out hmk on webassign, which is easy if you watch the examples/videos. His tests are really easy. However, if you did not understand algebra in high school, then paying attention to his lectures will only confuse you. Thankfully, it's only algebra!
Horrible teacher. Stay FAR away. He seemed to always be in a bad mood and goes through the chapters fairly quick. You are better off teaching yourself.
AVOID AT ALL COST. He really doesn't explain anything, in which you're better of using the textbook. His grading is also highly unreasonable.
Such a nice guy, always wiling to help, really hard accent to understand. Just make sure to go class and take notes because you may need them for midterms and final. take any other teacher if you really want/need to learn.
He is very hard to understand. He has a very heavy accent that is just too heavy to understand. Also if you ask him a question, sometimes he will not understand it and just answer something unrelated. Overall the class is easy. All you need to do is take notes and do the homework. The class is not hard, understanding him is.
His class is easy. You only have to attend to his class and take notes. He allows you to use calculator and one page of notes on tests. Homework and quiz are on weassign.
The teacher is really nice and try helping all students, whoever his accent is really hard to understand, therefore is better to not miss any class. there are online quizzes, which is technically your hw and affect big time your grade. I do not recommend this teacher at all, plus lectures are pretty boring and confusing.
hes awesome
Expect a moderate accent, which eventually becomes easier to understand. He has an example based lecture, which can be useful to some. He is not a bad teacher, he generally cares about his students but expects them to attend class and ask questions. Its important to attend class. And if you want to get an A, tutoring or outside help is recommended.
The class is very easy to pass if you attend each day and take notes on his lectures on the board. Every test is based on examples from his notes or the problems on web assign so as long as you understand mostly everything the class is an easy A. He does extend his homework a lot so there is a lot of forgiveness. Extra credit is given at the end.
His accent makes his lectures very hard to understand! Statistics is one of the easiest math out there. But he seems to make it difficult. He lectures by examples but fails to answer questions or request for clarifications effectively. His answers to any question does not answer the question at all. He grades very unreasonably! AVOID IF YOU CAN!!!
Avoid this teacher and save yourself time, lectures are really hard to understand because of his extremely thick accent. Examples done on the board don't make sense. You will teach yourself more than you learn from him. I heard statistics is supposed to be fairly easy but he makes everything way harder than it needs to be. Don't take this teacher.
Has accent but not get use to it after third class. Not clear in lectures. Lectures don't ever match HW. So teaching self. Workshop unhelpful. Can't avoid him since registration lists staff no this name. They do it on purpose . You will fail unless you get tutor outside Sjsu .
He's hard to understand at first, but I eventually got used to it. Take notes during his lectures. Problems he does during the lectures end up on the tests (sometimes same question & numbers). He allows 1 page (front+back)of notes for tests. He is not good at answering questions and can somewhat rude or confusing. He has extra credit pop quizzes
He has an accent and is hard to understand. Lectures are just the example questions from the book but the tests are completely different from the in class material and homework.
His thick accent isn't that big of a problem. He makes his lectures VERY easy to understand. Sometimes, too simple that, it may be a little confusing to others (extra steps) If you take the time to show up in class and understand the lecture examples (which often appear in his tests with some modification), you can def. pass the class with an A :P
Thick accent / Boring lectures / Tough Grader / Lots of Homework / Quiz every week, so stay away.
Pro's: Open note/ book quizzes. Page (front/back) of notes for tests. Provides lecture notes with examples (that appear on tests). Cons: Impatient when students ask questions. Very hard grader. Two many sections on exams, not willing to work with students who need make up days. Unenthusiastic about lectures. Doesn't communicate changes on material.
He is very understanding and lets you make up assignments. The homework was all online. It was easy and the website provided good resources for each problem. His lectures were heavy and a bit boring, but the tests were based on the problems he solved during lecture. You can use 1 page of notes (both sides) for tests and he allows anything on them.
The lectures were boring. However, the online homework with multiple tries helped a lot along with the quizzes. For the in-class tests, most of the material is from the lectures, some were even the exact same examples. You are allowed a cheat sheet (front and back), which helps a lot. Take a lot of notes, and you should be good.
Lectures were hard to follow sometimes because of his thick accent. But this class is easy to pass if you just do your homework/quizzes and prep for exams. I prepped for exams by writing every example problem on my cheat sheet and finished with a B+ . Use videos/example problems for hw and quizzes and you'll be fine.
This is so far my hardest class and not because of the subject but mostly because of the professor. His thick accent mixed with him not trying to explain almost anything as well as blocking the board and talking to himself basically does not help anyone learn. If you have the option to not take his class, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!
Easy A+ if you attend class and write down every example problem from the lecture. You're allowed a sheet of paper front and back for every test, so literally rewrite all the problems and you'll be good to go. Quizzes are online and take home. Professor is very understanding and will give extensions and extra credit. Tough accent but understandable
Began the semester with a C+ but was able to bring it up to a B+. This sounds good but it's not because of the professor. It was mainly because I figured out the test questions are exactly like the in-class problems he goes over. So the only way to get a good grade in this class is if you show up.
My boy Abera Jiru is the greatest Indian mathematics teacher I've ever had since coming to SJSU. I haven't taken a single math class since high school and I expected to fail when I took his class but it turned out to be really easy. Showed up 5 times in the whole semester which makes it a miracle that I passed.
Professor Jiru is probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. The only negative with his teaching was his accent at first, but as time went by he was easier to understand. He posts all his notes online, works out all examples in class (with steps), has a clear grading scale, and assigns online homework (which has videos for easy help).
Great math teachers seem pretty rare these days. Jiru is one of my favorites. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed, it really is up to you how well you do. Accent is tough but you get used to it. He is patient and gives plenty of examples and goes over what you dont understand. He really wants everyone to understand. I highly recommend
I failed calculus and had to take it again. Professor Jiru was much easier. He used web assign where we would turn in our hw and quizzes online, so you were able to check your answers. The study guides are incredibly similar to the tests. You also get quizzes in class to help with curving. Super easy if you go to class and try.
Abera requires a textbook, all the homework from the class I took was based off of it. He also posts lecture notes on Canvas. It's good to print them out and fill the problem answers in. He does have a rather thick accent, but I guess you do get used to it. Doesn't post grades, so it's a bit hard to judge how well you're doing in the class.
The homework and quizzes are all online. He gives 3 midterms the third was take home and will be dropping worst of the 3. Gives in-class quizzes as extra credit. I don't know why his ratings are so low.. coming from a bad math 71 professor I suggest Jiru... the study guides are nearly identical to the exams, what more can you ask for? Jiru is solid
If you have not taken calculus in high school, you will struggle since his terminology is a bit more advanced. He posts all lecture problems on webassign but you need to show up to class to get the solutions. Make sure you study the lecture examples as many of them appear in the exams. You are allowed one page, both sides of notes during the exam.
His accent makes sitting through his lectures incredibly difficult and hard to learn from
Although he has a thick accent, he is a good professor and explains very thoroughly in his lectures. His grading isn't too harsh; he gave us extra credit and even a take-home test! Most of the tests are identical to the study guides too. If his accent is too thick for you then make the effort to understand it and you will pass!
This class had alot of online homework and quizzes that had nothing to do with what we took in class and his lectures were super boring His exams are hard. He gives extra credit though.
I do not understand why Professor Jiru has such low ratings. As a student who had NO experience in calculus and TERRIBLY SUCKS at math, Jiru was amazing! His thick accent annoyed me in the beginning but you eventually get used to it and understand him clearer. He gives extra cred and a take home test that replaces the worst test grade. A hidden gem
Although Math is not my forte, Jiru did a great job in making calculus so much more interesting and enjoyable to learn. It was a bit hard at first to understand due to his accent, but I got used to it pretty quickly. He has great lectures and is willing to stop for any questions. He works out problems as we learn new concepts which was very helpful
Heavy accent. The class sucks, it's math. It's not going to be "easy." Jiru was cool for the covid semester. Because he went online he gave everyone a ton of extra credit with a "take home" midterm that we could not use notes on *wink.* Literally only passed because of this but I'm lazy. You can 100% chegg the course. Gives EC. Easy on late work.
This class was unnecessarily difficult with him teaching due to how unclear he was during lectures and how he would shoot down valid questions. The homework was fine, but there were lots of difficult homework problems that were not taught in class. I liked how direct and fast-paced he was, but if he could listen more to students that would be great
Your grade depends on 3 tests and the final. The tests were only 7-8 questions, and it included problems that were not in the homework or in the lecture. You need to self-study and do practice problems on your own to pass. We were allowed to use our own notes on the final, so do all the practice problems and homework in a notebook.
3 midterms (1 take home) and 1 final - less than 10 questions for the midterms and around 13 questions for the final. Homework is on WebAssign & is fairly easy. Similar questions from lectures on midterms. Open notes for final. One page front and back on all midterms. Don't go to lectures - pretty useless. Self-study and you can pass with a B tbh.
Professor Jiru's lectures might sound a little monotonous. But he is a great professor. His lectures are right on point. He always sticks to the topic. He provides an entire package with all of the information for the class including examples, so you can always refer back. He states his requirements clear and he allows a cheat sheet for every test.
boring
Gives us lots of homework, and most of the stuff on it isn't even covered by him in lecture.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER TAKEN. literally does not explain concepts well, flys through the material like its nothing and will occasionally ask if anyone has questions and when they do he will just repeat what confusing explanation as before. TERRIBLE avoid at all costs
He was great! Lectures were easy to follow and he answers any questions if you have any. Could get boring though. If you miss class, notes are posted online. Homework and quizzes are on WebAssign. There were 3 tests and he let us take one at home. He allows a page of notes for tests so they weren't that hard IMO. Just take good notes.
He is the worst! WebAssign is used for quizzes/homework, he uploads quizzes without notifying students. Tests are 6-8 questions and each question is worth 5 points. The tests have problems that are not in the study guide. When students ask questions he's dismissive. Lectures are boring and confusing, you have to teach yourself to pass.
Professor Jiru's Math 19 Course was difficult only if you did not do the assignments. Students need to take accountability for not turning in assignments on WebAssign even tho you can ask for an extension. Ask for help because usually, his classes are quiet and no one will ask questions. I recommend building a community to show involvement + aid.
He didn't take attendance once this whole semester. We had 3 tests and the final. Make sure to spread out the homework evenly throughout the week because there can be a lot of math problems. He does answer questions when you raise your hand. Also, he dropped the lowest test and assignment grade.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He writes examples from the book on the board without actually teaching you how to solve them. He kind of just goes through the motions and expects each student to know what he's talking about, despite 90% of the class being lost. Hardest math class I've ever taken, don't take him.
He was understanding and supportive.
This class was hard since basically have to teach yourself if you do not understand the examples the first time through. His accent is heavy so it is sometimes hard to understand him. However, for tests, he does only give one question from each section and tells you which section. Only take this class if you are confident in teaching yourself.
Very difficult to understand and he does not slow down. His teaching is not beneficial and he does not do a good job at communicating through canvas whatsoever. He reads straight from the textbook with barely any extra information and calls it teaching
this professor wasn't so bad. All his exams were identical to the study guide, only the numbers were changed. get a tutor and study his study guides and you'll be fine. HW was easy & everything is on webassign so all assignments are easy to see but you have to check it constantly cause he won't tell you when stuff is posted. stuff due every week.
I've read other people's reviews and they're being very harsh on the professor. He's very nice and is willing to help students if they actually put in the effort to ask for help or go to his drop-in office hours. The homework isn't bad (unless you procrastinate) and the tests are easy if you study the study guide. If you're struggling ASK FOR HELP.
Just be prepared to teach yourself, and make sure to attend his class because he wants it his way on the test. Homework is really easy and he helps out during office hrs. Although, I can't hear him and he over-explains a lot sadly. Sometimes his way is really hard to even understand because of so many unnecessary rules.
Do not bother taking this professor, especially if this is your first calculus course. His TA in the workshop class is a better teacher than him. He goes too fast on lectures and is hard to understand in general. I learned nothing from him and used the textbook and youtube.
Attendance doesn't matter a lot in the overall final grade, I would strongly recommend you show up to all the classes. A few of the problems he answers are pulled directly from the homework and you can oftentimes use them to study for the tests along with the stdy guide. Pop quizzes are used for extra credit which helped me a lot.
It seems to be a consistent occurrence that if you take his class, you should know how to teach yourself. He "teaches" by having a doc pulled up and solving the problems on it. Sometimes when there's a question, he responds in a "you're already supposed to know this" manner which doesn't really help anyone.
The bad: You have to teach yourself all of the material. He goes very fast and poorly explains concepts. Lots of studying. The good: Very lenient grading. At the end of the semester, the lowest homework, test, and quiz scores are dropped. On exams, you get over half credit just for trying the problem, and the lowest scored problem gets dropped.
The professor was not very instructional and had very much of a "this is all easy to understand, you dhould understand it in 10 seconds" attitude. He expected my class to just know very wquuckly. Also would say what the distribution of grades was out loud.
Very nice professor and was lenient with grading. Exams were manageable. Course material is learnable as long as you keep up with the homework and practice tests.
You can very obviously tell he has a wealth of knowledge however I unfortunately cannot understand most of what he teaches due to his accent. His pronunciation is very distracting and detracts from the lessons.
He's obviously smart but I can never understand what he says, especially if you sit anywhere but the front row. He's understanding + answers any questions you may have but unfortunately, most of the learning for this class will have to happen on your own, in your own time because you won't be able to learn much in class (even with extensive notes)
He was initially a little difficult to understand. Does a lot of examples in class, and goes by his lecture notes. A lot of homework but you have a lot of time - don't sit on it!! Easy to understand, I found his class very easy to follow (the examples helped a lot). Sometimes a little difficult to ask questions to, but he tries to help.
The only reason I got a good grade in this class is because I had to teach myself everything. The tests are exactly like the study guide, so practice the study guide questions and you'll be fine. The homework is really difficult because it's from a website. Boring lectures.
The lectures can get boring but the problems he chooses are often from the homework so it helps to attend lectures a bit. The tests are fairly easy if you study from the study guide he gives because they are so similar. The homework can be a lot if you constantly leave it until the due date.
He has an accent but speaks slowly enough to understand. Gives opportunities for extra credit and drops hw assignments. I am not very good at math so I met with tutors a lot but I enjoyed this class for what it was. Take lots of notes and try to do good on the 3 exams so you don't have to worry about the final! Overall great and I recommend it.
Study guides are almost identical to the exams. Do good on the exams and get all your hw done as rubric for class is set up 25% hw and 50% 3 exams and finals last
Professor teaches as if we already have a solid understanding of the material, which can be frustrating. He spends too much time over-explaining formulas instead of breaking down concepts in a way that is easier to follow. Additionally, he rarely faces the class, making it difficult for him to gauge whether we are confused or need clarification.
Take his class just practice the study guides that's pretty much all I did before all exams and led to me getting the grade I got. Lots of his reviews are from soft people. Accent isn't actually that strong if you have trouble understanding just ask him.
While he is quite knowledgeable on the subject, he goes by the material far too fast. You are required to have a webassign account to do the homework and the quizzes.
Attendance mandatory the first several weeks then offers group quizzes to those attending for extra credit. Drops your lowest 3 homework scores, lowest 2 quiz scores, and lowest test score. Test study guides are almost identical to the test. Some lectures move too fast but professor is willing to answer questions.
His website is expensive to fail the class :( really not worth it
Haven't finished this class yet but I'm hella cooked. No idea what the guys staying 90% of the time. Homework and quizzes are just sorta assigned and due at random. Good luck lol
Lectures are boring and exams are difficult.
terrible... do not take this teacher......worst class ever.
Assigns study guides that are identical to the midterms just with different numbers. Lowest midterm grade is dropped. Homework assigned at least a month in advance (10-15 assignments, 5-7 questions each) graded on accuracy. Final is tough since Prof. Jiru doesn't make them himself (no study guide), so do well on the midterms to boost your grade.
Class is fine but sometimes assigns homework we have never learned in class. We are required to either look it up online or teach ourselves via textbook, and even then, sometimes the textbook provided won't even teach that concept. His teaching methods are kinda confusing so be prepared to ask for help.
He can be hard to understand at times, and I had to teach myself most of the concepts we learned. He drops a test score and curves them most of the time. You need to study a lot if you really want to understand what is taught.
I would give him a half out of 100. Lectures are boring the course material was ok some of it was difficult but overall not too bad i took his class in the fall of 2020 during the pandemic so that made things a little better i would say. The exams were somewhat difficult but i passed through all of them.
Worst class ever, never understood the lectures. Majority of the time I had a hard time understanding the material, and most of the time I had to teach myself everything. Good luck in this class, wishing you the very best.
3 exams, homework is due on the day of exams. Lowest exam and 3 hw scores are dropped from the gradebook. Teaches well and is patient w students. Lectures can be boring at times and he can be hard to understand. Randomly gives extra credit that apply towards exams so be sure to attend class. Final is difficult so do good on everything else
He gives credit at the end of every class, but that's like the only good thing about his teaching.
Professors Jiru is a decent professor. Not amazing, just decent. The lectures are useful but super boring. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and can answer most questions given. There are 3 exams that have practice exams tied to each one that id almost a 1 to 1 copy. Hw is due before exams. Show up to class and you will do fine.
Class was actually very easy, his tests are exactly like his study guides and he gives extra credit in class through group work. He was funny and helped me with my homework during office hours. I would take him again!
im not even done with the semester and im already over it. Attendance is mandatory around the first two weeks. Only 2 big tests and a final in the semester. All other work/quizzes online. Very lecture heavy and many people end up skipping class every time. As of writing, the class average is a C- if you don't have a religion, pick one and pray.
Not bad but not good professor. Teaching wise, he is fine, and has much knowledge. If you show up you are fine. First two weeks are intimidating, but I will pass with an A. Two midterm, one final; they are close to study guides. Homework is fine, not extreme. This class is just, fine. If needed for credit, i would take again.
First couple weeks are intimidating. He has a thick accent and goes VERY fast. I found it pretty much impossible to keep up. 2 tests, one final, for our class we had a full page front and back as a cheat sheet (It has been different for previous classes) He gives VERY helpful study guides before tests. Use them to self study and you should be good
Hard to keep up with and can't understand a thing he's saying and he flies through the lectures. Also does not curve the grades
Good professor, accent can be hard to understand, but wasn't much of an issue for me. Explains concepts well. Lots of homework assignments, three midterms and one final. Midterms are extremely similar to his assigned study guides, so do them for practice. Final exam is made by the math department and is extremely difficult, so study!
He's not very helpful and the ridiculous Cengage online textbook website that he uses for homework assignments and quizzes is expensive.
