Great professor. I enjoy the class, she keeps the class lively and easy to understand. I recommend this teacher for those having to take a PHI 101 or 102 class.
She is a good person, but not good as a professor, she is there when you need help, but when you are stuggling with a concept she seams to confuse you even more.
Never take this class from her!
I thought she was a great teacher. I admit, she was hard but that's good because she made you work for your grade.
Great class , she was extremely helpful, she breaks down all the concepts in the books and gives you a common sense answer. Her Grading system is amazing , very generous on quizes and tests! Honestly you will learn alot! with effort, I Xtremely recommend her to anyone for sure!!
Great teacher!! I took her for both 101 & 102 and the class wasn't always easy, but she gives out extra credit, which helps a lot. She is always available for help. I would recommend her to anyone.
She was an excellent teacher. I was DREADING having to take this class, but she made it very enjoyable. Her quizes are easy but the exams are all essay, so be prepared. This class peaked my interest in philosophy even more. I definitely recommend her classes.
Very good teacher, but do not ditch or get sick, you will fail if you miss any classes.
Proffesor Aguilar is awesome! She is really intelligent, insightful, unbiased, and an all around cool person. Her tests/quizez are detailed so pay attetion, but she give plenty of extra credit options. She anwers questions very well, and has helped me find my way in the myriad of uncertain philosophies about life!
Very understanding and helpful. She made a confusing subject very easy to learn.
She is a very interesting teacher, and she is actually interested in how well you do in her call. She is willing to help you at any time as long as you respect her.

She is such an animated lecturer, and relays the material very efficiently. Her quizzes are mutiple choice and t/f, but he tests are short answer. The tests aren't bad at all though because she tells you what you need to know during lectures. Take this class with her!

I thought she taught her class very well. Her tests are all short answer/essay, and I am the first to say I hate tests like that. But she does an outstanding job of teaching the material. If you are looking for an easy A she is not the way to go, but if you actually want to learn a little along the way I would highly recommend her.
Makes a involved subject very easy to understand -Fair grader & a great lecturer - makes you think, laugh, and apply to real life experiences today. Great Class!
what can i say...... CRAZY!!! teaching, semantics, lecturing all good, but a lot to tough on grading for my likeing.............. lighten up a little abigail
Good: helps you relate material to everyday life. Bad: Very tough on grading, doesn't show a whole lot of enthuiasm in the class. Monotonous voice.
Awesome professor. Open minded, likes to discuss current events, and was always available for extra help. She has a great teaching style, and turned a very boring subject (mapping out arguments) into an interesting class. Take 102 with her if you can!
easier when taken in the summer session. She gives less work then.
Kinda Scary. Doesn't get me interested enough
Her test are hard but she's a really good teacher... i probaly coulda got a better grade if i put more effort into it... If you don't like to study or read class not for you!
teacher did not help at all, and was very dry with a monotone voice
Wow!!! is all i can say i got a F for the class ill take 60% of the blame for that... really good teacher makes the class fun... but those damn quizzes and test are not easy at all.. you REALLY have to read the books and the cd rom she uses Even the extra credit is complicated... Im a horrible test taker so if your not you may do really well.
This class was crazy. Learn the book and CD ROM by heart. Her quizes and grades were the hardest ones that I've had at UNLV. She's nice and she means well, but her class is tough as hell. If you decide to take it, good luck.
She will for sure make you work for your grade, there is no doubt about it. I totally thought I had an A, turns out just a B, but you at least know that you earn whatever grade she gives you. I really enjoyed this class, taker her if you can. Her tests are tricky though, so kow your stuff and read CAREFULLY! Great teacher overall!
Dr. Aguilar was great! She's very attentive if you have questions, and really wants everyone in the class to do well. If you do poorly on an exam, quizzes can help you raise your score. She makes you think, which is great too.
Great professor. She is so witty and she really makes you interested in the subject. The 3 quizzez, 2 tests, and the final were all challenging but not impossible. You must pay attention in class, write everything on the board, and study. The book is hardly used but the cd-rom that comes with the book is.
She's awsm! She could not explain this difficult subject any clearer. What you want to know: QUIZZES-MP, 1 wrd fill in, TESTS-shrt ansr, 1 paper. How to study...take good notes, then take the key words (people, vocab, concepts) make a list and be able to say something-I mean at least one something about each...and taada! You will get a good grade!
Really great teacher. Makes subjects interesting, organized, and she lets you know what to expect right from the beginning. Very straight forward and open to discussion. Her class is tough but again it's not surprise what's coming. Overall great and I'm taking another class she is teaching next semester.
Really great teacher. Makes subjects interesting, organized, and she lets you know what to expect right from the beginning. Very straight forward and open to discussion. Her class is tough but again it's not surprise what's coming. Overall great!
Great Professor to have an intro philosophy class with. Very smart and easy to understand. Welcomes all sorts of questions and encourages student participation.
I have to say that this professor is funny and intelligent. However, the class is not really as 'open to discussion' as I've read. She has a tendency to stick to her own opinion in terms of argument(in fairness-many people do).I really didn't enjoy her class as much as my peers did, but even I know that she was a much better teacher than most.
Extremely intelligent, yet very practical. She repeats things over and over but in the helpful way not the annoying, boring way. There is a tiered attendance setup where you get 15 points for attending 29-31 days, 14 for 27-28 days etc. I wish every professor taught like Aguilar. She pretty much begs you to ask her questions about a given lecture.
I'll just save you a lot of time, take another option.she starts the semester by demeaning any engineers in the room referring to a lack of formulas in ethics leading to less understanding for us... Her grading is subjective to the nth degree, do yourself a favor if you are in her class and don't participate, if your opinion differs you will be marked down. She takes attendance and requires around 1000 pages of reading through the semester (3) 3-page essays, she's "offended by bad grammar"pop
Great Teacher... very interesting and fun to listen to... very fair in her grading
Professor Aguilar is a good teacher. You will learn a lot from her. Expect to be challenged, though, because it is Philosophy after all. She's pretty fair in grading and offers extra credit.
She is a good professor. Her class is challenging but you'll learn a lot.
Awsome philosophy teacher! Her lectures are very clear and neutral(she never tell you her thinking toward the topic). Her tests are straight forward. Read the book and pay attention in class. I'd love to take her class again.
Dr. Aguilar is a good teacher. She's smart and knowledgeable on all topics covered. However, she is rather suppressive of anyone who raises a good/valid point. When she can't refute something, she'll respond, "Perhaps." Needless to say, don't challenge her, because she'll take offense. Despite this, she's still smart and a good teacher.
Good professor. She requires a lot of reading but it is not hard. She explains everything in class. Just do a cursory job reading and then you'll be prepared for the 'pop' papers. Again, you'll read a lot but it is not a hard class overall. She does require attendence. Took role everyday and marked you late if you were more than 5 min.
First half of the class is very reading intensive, but the second half has readings less than 10 pages, so it balances out. She explains everything very well, and allows question or comments. Has 6 pop quizzes (drops 2). Exams used mainly text from the readings, so reading is a must to do well. Offers extra credit on exams. Strongly recommend!
Great Professor. You will read A LOT but material is covered clearly in class. Contrary to previous posts, she doesn't shoot down your ideas or discussion topics. She DOES play Devil's Advocate a bit and certainly makes you defend your point of view using one of the ethical models discussed in class. But, should you expect anything less in ethics?
Taking her for ethics and love her so much. Most of the works are pretty easy to read, and those that aren't she's really good at explaining them. She's also very funny and VERY sarcastic. But, you HAVE to do the readings in her class; she gives pop synopsis. Test are pretty easy if you study (and read) and she offers extra credit. Take her!
Aguilar is one of the few professors on campus who still cares about her students and teaching. You have to work for your grade, but she is also fair with the grading. Expect to do a lot of reading!
Great professor! Reading is necessary for surprise reading quizzes, but her explanations of the material in class are enough to get you through her exams. She is so interesting and FUNNY during lecture. Her grading system is competitive, so good writers have the upper-hand.
GreatProfessor! Have t study, but she explains everything and is funny! UNLV IS LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT PROFESSOR
Grades easy on Take-Home assignment 1 & 3 but a little tougher on Take-Home 2(nothing lower than a C). Pop quizzes fairly easy if you attend class. Offers extra credit. Tries not to rush through material. Overheads generally a summary of what's in textbook. This class require quite a bit of studying esp. for the truth tables. Moderately Hard.
Opinionated, and really tense. She can be funny, but treats her class as if it is an upper division when really its just a general requirement. However, overall her class was educational and powerful.
I have an intellectual crush on this prof. Very fair grader; if you do the reading and take notes you'll do fine. She offers extra credit and will make time to help you if you need it. Take her for sure.
One of the better classes I've taken. My best friend and I both took her at the same time, but for different classes and we agreed that she was one of the best teachers at UNLV (my friend and I are of different majors). SHe has a slightly different teaching method that I found very fun and effective. Take her if given the chance.
Great professor. Loves philosophy! Lots of reading but she goes over all readings thoroughly. T/F tests are slightly difficult, but not if you pay attention in class. Attendance not mandatory but don't skip because there are pop quizzes. Grades based off who does the best and goes from there. Fairly easy to get a good grade. Extra credit on tests.
Dr. Aguilar is an amazing professor! She is very clear in her lectures, and you learn a ton from her class. It is a hard class, but well worth it. It is a real college-level class :)
Dr. A is a great teacher, but the subject material for this class was boring. The class consisted of: a midterm, final, 2 papers and 1 presentation over what you wrote your papers on. The class is pretty easy, just boring. And she's a fair grader. Take her if you get a chance.
Whatever you do. Don't be late a deadline. She offers extra credit. 2 essays each 1 to 2 pages. For good measure I wrote both with 4 essays. Was stuck in traffic because of a 3 car collision before my final and was two minutes late and didn't accept it. I worked for 3 hours on it and cancelled a meeting to do so. All that work for nothing.
She is a tough teacher, don't think you can read 1-2 pages of the reading and be fine, to understand her class you HAVE to do the reading. she is a FAIR grader though you can never get below a 60 on anything even if you dont write anything on her quizzes, to do well on her tests yoU HAVE TO READ, she takes quotes directly from the book, T/F test.
Easily the best teacher I've ever had in UNLV! Very passionate about her class, knows what shes talking about, explains clearly.took her summer.4 synopsis popquiz(read her overheads!)Read everyday.Tests could be tricky but doable especially if you listen to her. 1 midterm and 1final I got an A in her class. Her class will really make you think!
I took Intro to Ethics with Dr. Aguilar and I really enjoyed the course. She does grade you for attendance, and pop quizzes are given every so often. If you read the text and download the lecture notes, you should be able to receive a good grade. She is not easy, but always available via email or office hours if you need help. Excellent teacher.
This class is awesome ! Dr. Aguilar is an awesome teacher. She is always there to help in person, or through the internet. Her class requires reading but it pays off on the tests. My major is engineering and she made me like philosophy. For me her exams were easy since i read what was assigned every time. There is extra credit in her class too.
Aguilar can be a difficult professor to coast through. You really need to show up to class, pay attention, and do the reading. If you want a good grade, raise your hand and challenge her...she loves it! Definitely an "adult" class and worth taking.
Great teacher! You just need to come to class, do the reading and STUDY!!! she has random pop quizzes that incentivize you to show up to class, otherwise you receive a ZERO! learned a lot in her class, very helpful and COOL!!!
Absolutely amazing. She is genuinely interested in making sure every student learns the material. She is as fair of a grader as they come. Amazing class and highly recommend taking any case that she offers.
Dr. Aguilar is an extremely engaging professor. She grades on attendance. If you miss a certain number of classes, you will fail. She also grades on participation. If you do the reading and are prepared for class, you shouldn't have a problem. I recommend her highly. She is ALWAYS available to answer questions.
Professor Aguilar is an absolutely amazing professor. If you have the opportunity to take ANY courses with her, do it. I know I'm going to try. She explains things perfectly well, and her lectures are always well thought out. She has such knowledge and passion of her subject. Grading is also very fair. Great professor. Loved it.
This course used several textbooks, which are mandatory, and discussed extensively in class. You must read the material if you want a decent grade, as well as participate in class. There were two exams, a final exam, and a presentation. She is always available by email or office hours for questions or concerns. I highly recommend her as a professor
Great professor. A lot of reading but lectures cover the content clearly for exams. Show up to class, read, and you will pass.
OUTSTANDING professor! She's very clear, passionate, and knowledgeable about the subject. I'd definitely recommend taking this class with her. Heavy textbook use.
Very good professor who knew the content she was teaching. Very helpful both in class and out. MUST do the reading if you want a good grade because the questions are all based off of the readings. as long as you read the books and take notes you will pass the class.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. She is always prepared for lectures, but you must be in class to copy down the notes from the ppt slides. (not posted online) You will not get bored in lecture, the teacher is a great speaker. Tests are are multiple choice, true and false, and with an essay on the end. Easy to pass if you study the notes.
The class had 6 quizzes but only your best 4 are counted, 3 test (2 mid terms and final), and 2 papers. The quizzes are based on the reading, so make sure you skim through those at least. The lectures really clarify the material and Dr. Aguilar is extremely knowledgeable in the subject so don't be afraid to ask any question during or after class.
She is an amazing speaker! Her willingness to help a student and the powerpoints that she provides on a daily basics with her lectures are refreshing compared to most professors at UNLV. Not going to lie her test are not easy but if you attend class daily and do the reading you shouldn't have an issue. Like i said she is an amazing professor.
Aguilar is one of the best professors I've had so far in college. She is clear in her expectations and provides ample opportunity to do well in her class. One of my favorite things about her teaching style is that she never puts students down. She'll acknowledge if a student is incorrect about something, but she never makes anyone lookfeel stupid.
She's tough and demands her students put a decent amount of work into the class, but you'll definitely learn a good deal about the subject. She assigns a lot of readings and gives lectures on each. Tests are graded competitively and are in essay format. You'll have two papers, a presentation, and four exams in all. All in all, she's great.
Dr. Aguilar is a great professor. Her lectures are interesting and relays the material that can be difficult to follow when reading to a level of understanding and applicability. Dr. Aguilar is more than fair on grading, dropping low scores and offering extra credit. Assignments consist of 4 pop-synopsis, a 3 page paper, midterm and final.
One of the best professors and classes I've taken. You'll have to do a ton of reading, but you'll learn a lot in the process and Dr. Aguilar's lectures really help to solidify and reinforce the material. I wish she taught more classes more often because I'd love to take her again. A truly outstanding class. You will have to work for your grade.
Professor Aguilar is by far my favorite professor at UNLV. The class was difficult but she lectures well, and always gives good feedback. If you need some upper division electives I suggest Just War Theory and Political Philosophy.
Hands down THE best professor in the PHIL dept. She is engaging, interesting, and well versed in the material. She knows how to direct the class and stay on topic. Grading is clear, offers great feedback, I literally can't say enough good things about her. I can't wait to take her again. Wish I'd taken her sooner!!
Dr. Aguilar was such an awesome professor, She cares about the subject and takes pride in her teaching. You can tell she teaches because she loves it, instead of teaching because of a paycheck. She was hands down the most awesome and FAIR professor I have ever had. She bases the grades on the class average, and is really organized.
Dr. Aguilar is an amazing professor. For an 8:00 am class, she was always high energy and extremely engaging with her lectures, which I really appreciated. There were a few pop-synopses, two exams, and an essay, all of which she gave feedback on and answered questions about. I wish I could take more of her classes and learn more about philosophy.
Dr. Aguilar is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is extremely knowledgeable on the material and is willingly to help you. I originally took this class to get a 2nd year seminar requirement out of the way but I ended up really enjoying the class. She provides useful feedback on every assignment and the class itself is interesting.
Aguilar is probably one of the best phil professors UNLV has. She is knowledgeable and really helps her students understand the material. She does make participation mandatory as well as attendance. I feel she is an easy grader.
One of classes I genuinely enjoyed at UNLV. Grading system is very fair that if you tried you will get a grade you deserve. Lectures are entertaining. Attendace is mandatory as there are 6 pop quizzes, but top 4 grades are used. Extra credit chances throughout the semester as well. Overall great professor.
Dr. Aguilar is very cool and tries to answer your questions and help you the best she can understand things. But the readings are difficult and you cant use her lecture notes to study for tests. Pop quizzes are frequent so do your homework and READ. If the reading is hard for you the class will be hard and tests even HARDER.
way too hard for a 101 class, exams are straight from the book but you have to read 100+ pages and memorize the passages word for word, one word, ONE word will change the entire T & F question or MC. 6 pop quizzes that are just ridiculous, the writing assignments aren't that bad but don't take this class with her if you're not down to read/memo!!!!
I had to take this class as a requirment but I'm glad I took it with Dr. Aguilar, the reading was confuzing and you had to read before each class as there would be pop quizez. Attendance is mandetory but her lectures are amazing and would really help understand the reading material and also funny at times.
I took this class hoping to learn about interesting philosophical theories, but we only learned about philosophers throughout history. There is a ton of reading of mostly old texts, and the exams are mostly true/false questions and she writes each question in a way that sounds entirely right, so they're very hard. But she is knowledgable and caring
Professor Aguilar is just ok. My main issue with her has to do with the grading and exams. Exams are way too difficult for a 101 class: questions are T or F and one word could change the entire question which is really annoying. Her grading is very unclear as well and is tough with essays. I've never received a D on a paper before until her class.
heres the deal: i'll rate her the same way she rated me on my essays. her lectures are "decent", she uses a lot of examples and encourages discussions. workload is "acceptable", two 5 pg papers and three shorter ones. tests had rly deceptive T/F q's tho. her ppt slides are recaps of the readings so just use those to study. overall she's "all right"
I was interested in the content and how she taught the course (thru lectures). Her teaching style isn't meant for everyone since some days were mundane lectures. She gave interesting cases and examples. Grading is based on 3 short essays, 2 long essays, 3 exams (based on section), and a final. There are chances for extra credit. Make sure you READ.
I am a senior at UNLV and Dr. Aguilar is the best professor at UNLV, and the best professor in the philosophy program. Her lectures are open for conversation, and she brilliantly engages her own research on ethics with the subject matter. 2 essays and 3 exams!
3 Exams (includes the Final), 2 Project Papers and 3 Application Essays - that's it. The secret to doing really well in this class... (1) READ the material you're supposed to before the class. She sends you an announcement on EXACTLY what to read. (2) PRINT the PDF's for the lectures and take notes IN CLASS (important!). Not easy if you don't read.
AA is great. She seems serious & stern, but she's actually really nice and funny. The class is kinda boring, but it changed the way I view war and I learned a lot. Lecture heavy, and she repeats a lot of the same stuff which is good for the exams. 3 exams, 2-3 papers/or presentation. Always available to talk after class. Would def take her again.
This was a required elective for my major that covered 2 different credits i needed. That is the only positive about this course. Aguilar needs to calm down with the workload. you teach an elective, i shouldn't be working 2+ hours/day on an elective course. you also have to buy like $300 worth of books you'll never use again
classes are BORING. I did not go or read. However, you don't need to for a A. I did well by just watching videos on the readings and sparknotes. Exams are true or false questions about quotes from the book. So if you read, im sure its easier but I did fine without. The essays boost your grade. I just applied philosophy to cartoon characters, easy.
Chill professor. She appreciates participation and she is clear about the topics she teaches.
Super rude. Yelled at our class for 20 minutes TWICE about how we were the worst class she's ever had, even though we were just simply confused with her directions and lectures. She is very inconsiderate & entitled. The workload itself is quite manageable but it is SHE that makes the class so unbearable. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone. Awful.
While there is no weekly homework, there are 4 2-page papers, 2 5-page papers, and 2 tests. The tests are a large part of your grade and are completely based on the textbooks not here lectures. While she is very entertaining and sarcastically enthusiastic don't lag behind on the readings.
Her lectures are fine, they are extremely dense and sometimes painful. Though, she is very good at explaining the concepts a lot of focus is required to understand sometimes. She is friendly and is always willing to answer your questions. The exams are difficult, a lot of true false questions about the beliefs of philosophers which can be hard.
Her tests are mostly true or false and one essay-like question. The true or false questions are like deciphering riddles. You will most likely need to do the extra credit in order to pass. She required us to send assignments by email but did not tell us if we submitted them wrong. Nobody got 100 on the test. The average test grade was a 75%.
OK professor. I think she would be better if you start off with her good note, but as a student that prefers not to go to class she can be a little snarky which can lead you to be even less encouraged to go to class. She says attendance isn't mandatory but then would bash you for not attending class (I only attended exam days).
Professor Aguilar is an exceptional philosophy instructor and has a deep understanding of the subject. Classes are lecture heavy, so I wouldn't recommend missing class. On the plus side, she does an amazing job with her lectures. Overall great class but it is a bit of a challenge to truly understand the material.
If you already don't like/understand philosophy, do not take her. She is knowledgeable but she also expects you to have prior knowledge even tho its a 101. very lecture heavy but somehow you still feel lost in the lectures. her tests are literally awful. all t/f with an essay. paragraph long questions so if you miss 1 word, the question is wrong.
Dr. Aguilar was a great professor, and I look forward to taking another course with her in the future. She has an obvious passion for Philosophy, and she ensured the class had a clear understanding of the material. There are three exams and three Essays. If you show up, read, and pay attention, you will do just fine.
Good professor and I have no complaints. Be prepared to do reading daily in order to understand class completely and there are 3 2-page papers, 2 5-page papers, and 3 tests so grades are pretty well spread out. You will get a 35/50 on project papers just for turning it in on time. You can do extra 2-page paper for 15 points extra credit.
Solid professor overall. Exams are actually pretty difficult with the average around a 75%. However, the application essays are where you'll get most of your points, which she grades very generously.
Chill Professor. The papers are kinda fun to do if you're into philosophy and they're quick to do. Lectures are about evaluating ethical cases and what should be done. Overall enjoyed my time. You do have to do daily readings but honestly still feels like the class I did the least work for 3 credits when compared to any math or science course.
Professor Aguilar's class can be challenging, but engaging. Readings are crucial, and unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep. Attend lectures and participate for the best experience.
Very good professor, lectures are interesting, and gives good examples to what she's teaching. Exams are tough, just True or False questions plus a written portion, and extra credit on the back. You have to do 2 Project Papers and 3 Application Essays (with a 4th application essay for extra credit). Overall great, just have to pay attention.
She is very degrading. Get ready to sit in class and hear long discussions. Only few assignments, but you have to do very well. She grades very toughly and doesn't give feedback when inputting grades.
Hardly uses technology so get ready to do research. If you fail her class then you just didn't do the work. There's three exams and they're pretty hard but as long as you turn in all the essays including the extra credit you'll be fine. She does not grade the essays harshly so just turn them in and you'll be fine.
