Great teacher, very knowledgable, good teaching techniques
Difficult exams. Okay lectures, can be confusing at times, otherwise okay.

Dr. Thompson was really clear, lectures were straightforward and concise, and tests were very fair. If you take the time to see her in office hours, she is more than willing to put in all the effort it takes to get you to truly comprehend the material.
She is kind of good at explaining materials.
She is nice but doesn't like office hours. More preparation before lecture recommended. Class is easy.
Advanced Calc is very tough, and I'm sure I never would have survived it without Professor Thompson. She is so patient during office hours--she must be the most approachable person in the math department. She will go out of her way to make sure you succeed, but you need to go to office hours every week. She's the best math professor!
hard.... hard exams.... bad TA
Professor Thompson is okay, but if you have Sara as your TA, your dead! Worst TA ever!
worst professor ever! She was very unorganized and spent most of her time giving us useless examples. Sometimes she forgot what she was saying. IF u want super hard midterms and a 17 page final, then by all means, take the class with her. PS: Sara the TA is useless
Nice although not really helpful, if i hadn't already had two years of high school calc i probably wouldn't have passed the class. When SHE makes up her tests they're incredibly easy. When HER TA does, they're so hard that the class average hovers around 40%. Her TA was a **** Queen from Hell who i hope never teaches.
pretty easy class if you have some calculus backgrouds (AP courses). the midterms are loong, but if you know your material well, it won't be that hard. do all the homework she assigned wethier it needs to be turn in or not, 'cause it will help LOT. didn't attend the class except for midterm days and still got an A.
Horrible lectures, don't even bother going. Too many people did well on the first midterm so the second one was impossible. Her teaching style is a joke, she does magic tricks and makes up stupid riddles instead of teach the information. Did not enjoy this class at all.
she doesn't want people to come to office hours sometimes.
Grade based on hw and exams, all of which are challenging and two of the exams were hard ass. Thompson is a fantastic teacher willing to say things three different ways until you understand it. Go to office hours even if you don't have questions (but listen to other people's questions) and do ALL the hw, including sets that aren't graded.
She is pretty cool. I liked her class, she taught the stuff as best she good even though its hard. Do the HW before section because the quizzes are on what the HW is. Do all the practice problems she gives for review because the tests are very similar.
I thought she was an extremely understanding teacher. She knows what most students have problems with and tries to explain it as well as possible. She also teaches the course at a pretty good paste. Besides teaching the course, she also tries to bring interest into it.
Good professor. Explains math well, but talks quietly so sit near the front. Livens lectures with interesting "side problems".
Abi rocks! She is the best female math teacher at Davis. A totally lovely person and smart too. She explaines thing well and go with a slow pace to make sure everybody understands. Inspiring as well.Take her class, you will love her.well, the exms aren't easy but fair.
Pretty good class, much easier than 21A. Quizes are insanely easy, but HW was really tough at times. The first two midterms were fairly easy. However, the final was surprisingly hard. Dont know my grade yet but i am expecting an A or B. Of all my friends i had the easiest 21B professor, highly recommended. Lectures not necessary if you study
She explains things pretty well. Exams are pretty easy. The class was fun. Generous grader. Her style of teaching isn't really what I prefer, but overall I still learned a lot and had a lot of fun.
Very nice teacher. Very helpful. Loved her lectures, and her tests are very doable. I would recommend her. :)
Professor Abby is quite a casual professor and keeps the class interesting. Tests are pretty easy if you did the homework and understand the concepts. Her grading style is also very nice. Don't hesitate to ask for regrades.
She is very nice and you can tell that she genuinely wants to get her students interested in the subject material. I sometimes found her lectures to be boring because she spent a lot of time on easy concepts and then would speed through harder concepts. The exams are easy, though.
Really liked her lectures - thought they were really entertaining for math. The quizzes were really easy if you did the homework. She picks one question straight from the homework for the quiz. Exams were doable if you understand the concepts fairly well. Best math class I had in my college career.
Honestly, This class and prof. made me really question my passion for math. The content was fine. However, the teaching was not very clear. Halfway through a problem, Prof. Thompson will often shuffle through her notes to grasp what she's doing or just leave problems hanging saying "you all know how to do this." I did most of my studying on Youtube
I received an A in 21b, but struggled to pass this class. Fell behind, and we didn't cover everything we were supposed to. Her tests are the WORST. You'll learn how to solve a problem one way, but then you're given completely context and information for the tests that you're expected to know how to solve. I learned primarily from examples on hw.
Her test is not that difficult if you understand the homework problem and samples on the textbook. She has two different methods to grade you and this gives you more oppotunity to gain higher grade. Since she sometimes do not ask you to solve the problem after setting up the correct equation, many problems turn easier if you understand theory.
I really liked the way she taught. The average on her first and second midterm was pretty low, but she made up for it with a very fair final and a nice curve at the end. Overall, I would say this class is not easy by any means, but professor Thompson does care about your success.
21B is not an easy class, but she has a nice curve. Her tests are fair. She is extremely helpful and nice during office hours. My only real complaint about this class was the quizzes, they didn't always match up with the homework
21B is a hard class, harder than 21C imo. Abigail is an amazing person, and I enjoyed her class structure with the weekly quiz and the two grading methods, but her tests tended to be rather unfair and tbh her lectures did nothing for me. Here's my tip: take kouba if u can, and use a math book. Most books are really good for 21b, I recommend Stewart
I have finished up to 21d and she is the worst 21 prof I've had. Her lectures only confused me more after I had grasped a topic. I would read the textbook, know how to do all of the HW, Quizzes and other examples in the textbook and her midterm questions still made no sense and had really odd curveballs in them. Luckily she curves. AVOID HER
Abby is simply the best thing to happen to the Math department! A real gem. She's very caring and her lectures are inspiring. She would come up with the best explanations and everyone would be able to understand. Workload is the usual: Homework, 2 Midterms, and a Final! A generous curve in the end as well.
Thompson was an exceptional lecturer and helped drive home the intuition behind important problems and theorems. She truly cared about students and was super understanding. 3 non-cumulative midterms and no final. Lowest midterm and 2 hws dropped. I didn't think I was that great at combinatorics and graph theory, but I ended up doing really well :)
She tries the best she can to simplify the concepts. Concepts are hard and not intuitive but I'm sure she does her best. 3 midterms and drops the lowest. grade given by 70% midterms + 30% hw. Homework is doable but exams are pretty hard. She gives very generous curve at the end and is caring and compassionate to students that struggle.
Do not recommend at all. She finds it very hard to clear doubts and explain concepts in different ways. She jumps concepts and moves very quickly and she assigned SO MUCH HW. Doesn't curve or grade well either, do not take her.
She gave really clear lectures with lots of examples. The midterms were not that difficult and the grading was fair, lowest one dropped. There is lots of homework but lowest 3 get dropped and they help solidify understanding. Honestly if you just practice, you should pass easily. Loved her little sea slug show-and-tell at the start of every class!
Abby is a decent lecturer. She tends to veer away from course material sometimes. Midterms were fair, except hw didn't prepare for it. Midterms were 50% of grade (dropped the lowest), hw was 20% (lowest 3 dropped) and the final was 30%. Overall really understanding professor!
Three midterms, the lowest one is dropped; homework is assigned after each class, the lowest three are dropped; 5% of your grade is just for participating. She is a good teacher and great with questions, but sometimes distracted in lectures. I ended with an 86 (A), always check your grades to make sure they line up -- I had more than a few issues
Professor Thompson was an outstanding math professor. She's a great lecturer and a very charming lady. Tests were difficult and didn't reflect the content as much as I would have liked, however the curve was fair. Take serious time to study for each of the midterms or you'll do very poorly.
Exams weren't difficult, it just tested you on whether or not you know the main concepts. Office hours were extremely helpful and got a lot of 1 on 1 instruction. Would recommend taking again. The homework and provided sample problems were really good preparation for the exams.
Solid professor for a badly designed course. Assigns 10-15 HW problems every class, and doing them is highly helpful. Her discussion sessions are optional, but the TAs are excellent at helping you out. There is a completely ungraded quiz in each discussion for your practice and I highly recommend doing it. Exams are not too difficult.
Class is 20% homework (15 problems assigned each class), 20% midterm one, 20% midterm two, and 40% final. Midterms easier than final but the whole class was fair. Tests are not many questions. Do homework problems, practice exams, and review problems you did in class. She is a very good lecturer and will give a fair curve depending on final grade
Her homework load is light, usually around 10 questions for each new concept introduced. Lowest 4 homework scores were dropped. If you do the homework and practice problems you should be good for the exams. Her final was surprisingly more difficult than the 2 midterms
Great prof! Super accommodating and understanding. Solid lectures that explain everything and the exam is very much doable when u study and are prepared for the material. Lectures are recorded so not totally necessary to go in person. Graded on hw, 2 midterms, and a final.
Loved her!!
If you get her for the 21 Series, don't worry bc she is a great professor. Honestly, all you have to do is know how to do the homework and show your work because every question you see on the midterm appears on the homework, as you'll notice on the practice exams. Very organized class.
She's very kind and explains everything in a logical, easy-to-understand way. Do all the HW (even the optional problems) and go to OH if you're confused on the content or HW solutions. 1 midterm (in person), and the exams were most of the grade. Final was curved and relatively easy (study lecture examples and HW)
Great lecturer, was able to explain complicated concepts in simple terms that made it easy to understand what theorems represented. Gave good answers to questions, and was very helpful when someone did not understand a concept
Graded on hw, 2 midterms, and a final. The class is decently easy but lectures are hard to follow at times. She teaches the topic, but never actually clarifies what it is for. She jumps around between subjects during lectures. Uses chalk so it could be hard to see from the back. If anything, go to TA review sessions before tests.
I am really curious about this course's grading. In midterm2, she or her TA managed to have some points off my paper even if I wrote the answer and the process very clearly and the same as the solution. It's very awful. Lecture is awful and useless. I fell asleep in lectures and still got a full score in midterm1.
This prof really cares about her students. Amazing lecturer, excellent at answering questions, and very approachable when a student needs help. I have had bad profs before and Thompson is amazing! Tests are hard to complete within the time, but with her wonderful teaching style, I would take her class every time! Lovely person and awesome teacher.
The class is negatively curved. So even if you get 93%, it doesn't guarantee that you get an A. In this quarter, you couldn't get an A unless you get 96% or above.
Don't rely on the curve because it didn't change my % grade at all. First half of the class (series) was simple but her lectures in the second half (vector calc) were really confusing. It was difficult for me to link all the information together. Final was also surprisingly difficult. Prepare to self-study for the majority of the course.
There definitely was a curve in the class, albeit small, there was a guarantee that our grades could either stay the same or improve. Final was very fair with more than enough time to complete if prepared. Prof had clear lectures and always offered help twice a week in OH; however, hardly anyone ever came. Use your resources and don't fall behind.
This class definitely required time and energy, but I loved it! Prof. Thompson was probably the best math instructor I've had in the last three years of my life, and I felt like I left her class with a good understanding of the 21C material (series, vectors, and some multivariable calc). I would recommend going through the textbook after lectures.
Lectures are useful and the class overall isn't too hard. If you study before each midterm and attend lecture you will get a good grade.
She doesn't give out any study guide, but gives out practice tests, not similar to actual test. Actual test is harder. She also lock the midterm answers before the quarter end so you can not go back and see the right answer before final. Grade is based heavily on midterms and final. Doesn't really give curves, avoid her if you have better option!
The content is fairly easy. Her lectures don't make sense as they are done on the board with chalk, so it's slightly difficult to keep up. Her midterms and final are so weird, I don't even know how to describe it. She's a nice and understanding person. If you have her, dw at all, you'll be fine.
Her lecture is not for normal human, but rather math genius. so confusing like, gurl, you talked abt all those concepts but does not tell us how to use them to solve the problem like....
Shes a really bad lecturer and honestly can be kinda stuck up. Mid way in the quarter right now and she's praising how most of her student will end with a high C/ low B. Some one should tell her thats nothing to be proud of.
I don't like this class, she lectures weirdly and often times confused me during lectures, but you can't skip as she tests you on material only explained during lecture. Her tests are long and confusing. She doesn't give study guides and the hw problems, despite giving 8 hours per week, do little to help with test prep, so you're going in blind.
This class is hard because some of the materials in the test are those she never went over during the lecture, or understate with only one example and you won't even see them in homework. All you can do is learning by yourself. You'll have no idea about what she is going to put in the test because she expects you have knew everything already.
she destroyed me
Half of the class is failing and every time I am on my way to her lecture I just hope the Q bus will run me over.
I feel like most people complaining about this class either don't pay attention during lecture or aren't compatible with her lecture style. If you go to every lecture, take good notes, and do all of the homework, you should be comfortable in this class. Follow along with every example in lecture and go to office hours if you need any clarification.
She destroy my GPA.
The class itself is already hard. It is even harder if you take a hard professor like her.
The final is today, but just thinking about it has made me wanna puke I have been having diarrhea the whole weekend bc the stress. I asked her if she's gonna curve, and she said maybe, but just thinking of her cheering up when the second midterm has an average of 65ish, I am desperate.
To put in simple terms: I cried for 40 minutes straight right after the final.
I would rate her higher if she used the projector, her whiteboard is hard to follow, all the test materials I had to self study or learn from Alameda, highly recommended to take him instead. Class average is horrible on tests, which may reflect her ability to teach.
Ms. Thompson is a very nice lady. She cares about her students and thus makes her class very fair. Homework is consistent, but what else can you expect from calculus. Midterms are decently hard, however, there is a fair curve given compared to the class average. I would take her.
Finished my final yesterday but this class was a blast! She's so nice and her lectures were pretty clear. Feeling 100% confident idk why everyone else is complaining
The final is 40%, two midterm is 20% each, hw is 20%. First median is 54% which is a F, second median is 69 which is a D+, the final median is a 66 which is a D. And she said she is very happy with this grade. Not even say going to curve or not when end.She is happy with half of class doing a D. I am a Asian who study all my time for this to get A-
All of the tests were so hard compared to what was taught in class. Her teaching was kind of confusing to me so I learned most of the material myself through the online homework.
Bie Xuan Ta if you want a good gpa
I like her style for lecture and she is a funny lecturer. However her test is hard. We have a fat curve:84-94% A, 76%B, 66%C. Concerning the median was 54(but have a 20point add so likely a 74),69 and 66, half people still would get a C or C+.
Good professor. Makes small mistakes every lecture that has to be corrected by students. Can be confusing. Class is very fast-paced but that's out of the professor's control. Answers every student's questions. Give lots of homework, but they're very helpful for exams (also drops lowest four homeworks). Will curve if necessary.
Professor Thompson is a really good choice. The homework helps me learn the most. Lectures are useful and fun, but a little bit fast-paced. Exams are hard, especially mt1, but she gave curve, so it's cool. It's not easy, you really need to study hard to get a good grade. Overall, great!
this course is not easy. she makes a lot of mistakes during lecture which can hinder understanding. she gives a lot of homework but they make for good practice problems. go to discussions they help a lot. midterms and exams can be difficult but the curve isn't terrible. overall not a bad professor, but sometimes it can be a lot.
Her class is fairly difficult, but if you go over the sample midterm topics and do all the pearson homework, it shouldn't be too hard. She's very good about answering questions and is available outside of class often. It's definitely difficult but if you pay attention and study you can get an A. Very generous curve too.
I only have fantastic things to say about Prof Thompson. Lectures were recorded and uploaded, exams were representative of (and easier than) hw, great at providing visuals and answering questions, gave great practice midterms/finals, and useful formula sheets on exams. Homework assigned every class that took 1-2 hours, but was really helpful.
I'm a CS major so I took this to get rid of my math requirement. Easy class. I came to lectures but it wasn't mandatory. Go to OH if you're confused about anything. 2 Graded HW problems a week (but do the ungraded ones to study for the exams). She also gives good practice questions to help you prepare. Pretty fair tests overall.
Best math professor! She is really caring and the course are so organized. The way she explained are very clear and I love to go to the lectures. Go to office hours, and do the homework. The exams are somewhat challenging but the problems are interesting and not harder than homework. She give sample problems and curves as well. Good memories!
Pretty easy class and a nice prof with passion! I hear she's retiring soon. I wish her keep healthy and happy.
Prof. Thompson was excellent. Her lectures were very, very good, she made the concepts easy to understand. Homework was 20% of the grade which was nice. Exams were sometimes a little tricky but pretty easy compared to a lot of other professors. She provides good practice problems as well. If you have the option, I highly recommend taking her class.
Her lectures are structured well, and the way she presents materials makes it easier to grasp. Midterm 1 was very easy. Just don't slack off afterward because you finally get into vector analysis. Practice problems definitely helps, and understanding the material conceptually is something you need to get down. (something I didn't really understand)
Broke down concepts well, making them easier to understand and held review sessions + provided practice problems before exams. Midterm 2 & final were trickier at times but very fair (ensure you mastered key concepts). Averages were D- to C+ (little partial credit), but final curve was generous. Quite impressed as it was her first time teaching 21D.
abby is literally such a queen, cannot recommend her enough. lectures are structured super well and never felt rushed. she would try to give us a conceptual understanding of the material by using props. practice problems and review sessions before exams, tests were pretty fair, and she herself tries to make it so that the test average is in the 70s
The lectures were mostly conceptual, and the explanations were good. At times, it got a bit abstract for me, but I was able to manage by reading the textbook's relevant sections and watching YouTube videos. Tests were ok; a formula sheet was provided for the first midterm and final. Lectures were posted online. Doing homework helps but takes time.
Great choice, Thompson is very caring and good at lecturing. Somewhat difficult exams this quarter.
Wonderful experience. Professor Thompson is well organized and a great lecturer. She teaches in a way that makes the material easy to understand, shows a good amount of example problems, and even brings in models to help us visualize the concepts. Lectures recorded, exams are fair in difficulty and formula sheet is given.
Her lectures were good. I ended up needing to watch a lot of YouTube videos on topics, but that's to be expected. Most importantly, grading was entirely fair and reasonable, so I would definitely recommend taking her for 21D if you can.
Prof is kind. Lectures felt slow but got to everything with extra time and taught thoroughly so no complaints. Go to lecture. Actually learn to do HW problems. HW grade is free points. Test problems very simple, massive formula sheet given, have to memorize your trig identities tho. Curve was small but that is bc of easy tests: A=92 A-=84 C-=60
Great professor, just don't fail a midterm. final grade was curved heavily.
Prof Thompson was a great professor. She gave great lectures that made sense to me and stayed in line with the textbook. She assigned very little homework (5-10 problems per chapter) and her homework website was elite (Pearson). Her tests were a little inconsistent in difficulty, but overall not that bad. I got a B purely out of laziness.
Lectures were somewhat interesting, attendance was not mandatory, and she posts lecture recordings online. Had 2 midterms and a final. All the tests were alright with fair grading, but the overall curve wasn't too big (since all the averages were high). Curves are based on final distribution so you can't tell until after everything is graded.
Very few HW with interesting Math class, challenging ungraded HW but easy exams. I will definitely take her course again.
One of my favorite math professors I've ever had! She explained things in very understandable ways, and was very thoughtful when asked questions - I could tell that she truly cared about the subject and about the students. Tests varied extremely in difficulty, which is the only negative thing I have to say about this class.
Prof. Thompson makes really cool, interesting lectures and is good at helping you visualise math concepts in space. The grading system feels quite balanced with homework that has revisions and lectures, although it relies on Pearson and MyLab in order to function efficiently. The tests were also fair and matched what we learned in class.
This was a difficult class in terms of concepts, but the professor explains well. Exams varied greatly on difficulty. Genuinely make sure you understand all the concepts before the exams.
She's really caring but is an awful lecturer. She crammed the hardest concepts (Green's Theorem, Stokes Theorem, Divergence Theorem) into the last WEEK of class. The final was awful compared to the midterms, and the practice exam did not prepare me whatsoever. The midterms were pretty easy, but the last two weeks were poorly taught.
Confident, casual, and engaging to her students, she taught the big 4 calculus theorems in a straightforward manner and is open to questions. Test questions are not only similar to homework, but we were given a formula cheat sheet. She is aiming for you to understand and succeed, not just memorize math.
She was great, Her lectures were super clear and helpful. The first midterm was probably the easiest one I've ever taken, the second one not so much. But the final was fair.
