easy material but his accent is hard to understand, nice guy....just go to class and teach yourself the material later
cant understand him.
accent, but he lets you drop your worst test grade if you dont have 3 or more unexcused absences. tests are straight from homework. good guy, SMART
Easy material but does not compromise when it comes to making up exams and he has an attendance policy
Easy grading, you can always talk to his about your test and he gives you credit for effort. Just show up! He lets you drop your worst test!! Although his accent is hard to understand, it's not a problem. Easy A if use the "homework" for extra p
Dr. Sow is a real nice guy, jokes around with the class and explains everything real well even with his accent, found out he knows 7 languages! real smart guy, he drops your lowest test grade if you dont miss more than 3 sessions, pretty easy overall.
Okay class... not fun, kinda boring but gets you a grade. I think I truly deserved to fail his class but I passed with a C.
Very hard to understand. Too many test with too little notice.
He's a nice professor. Test are not hard, composed of the questions on the homework. However, his lectures can be borring and sometimes difficult to understand. If you do the homework you'll be fine.
This dude is real easy, you'll get an A as long as you go to class
confusing accent, not understandable, does not explain concepts, horrible if you are not good in math, tests are right from homework problems, easy A w/ his attendance policy, not helpful or clear at explaining math concepts, bring other homework to do
He's alright...drops lowest test grade if you miss less than 3 classes and gives you 3% extra on the final if you never miss a class. Just copies the examples out of the book and puts them on the bored and explains them a little bit.
VERY EASY TAKE HIM AND AWSOME TEACHER awsome I swear
very easy. take it if you got a lot of other hard courses. if not go challenge yourself
Only teaches to the front row! unless you can wing in it math class... Don't take him. He's a sweet man and very funny- but not the kind of teacher that helps you learn.
Don't even try. It's a bad deal.
helpful
very nice and very helpful
very nice and helpful. Ask him about the book that he wrote; you'll score points. Really nice man when you get to know him. Tests are EASY
awesome teacher. do the homework problems and go to class regularly and you will get an A. He is very helpful and nice person.
This class was a breeze! i hardly payed attention in class(because i know algebra very well so it was basically a refresher) and just did the hw he assigned becuase thats what will be on the test. So basically just get the hw done and you'll get an A. (he did teach well so dont think you wont learn anything)
dr sow is an awesome teacher. very easy class. jus tdo the homework prob;ems and youll get an A
Dr. Sow is very hard to understand. He does make a lot of jokes though so, that makes his class more interesting but I still had to end up reading all the sections in the book.
4 tests and the final counts twice. Drops lowest test grade if you only miss 3 classes, accent isn't bad, ask questions in class if you don't understand, started using online homework but assignments (3 for the semester), tests problems are the same ones from written homework and he doesn't collect that. I'm bad at math and got B, A is possible
Easy Prof...Like others have said, he takes problems from his homework(which he doesn't collect) and puts them on the test. Very Easy A.
what's he saying? i just got out of his class and i don't know what just happened... but i think i'm carrying twins. he doesn't collect hw, but he also doesn't go over the hw in class... tad irritating.
He was extremly hard to understand, you can ask questions, but good luck trying to understand his explanations. The tests weren't that hard, as long as you do the homework and understand what you did you'll be fine. Test questions are straight from the homework. Overall try avoiding this teacher if possible unless you enjoy teaching yourself math.
cannot understand a word out of his mouth. his style of teaching is NOT understandable and he takes off countless points on tests for ridiculous things. if you are naturally good in math, you will be fine. if not, TRANSFER CLASSES!
dont even wast your time taking his class. His class is so boring, he's hard to understand, and he is a stickler on attendance. I had to teach myself. if you have a question dont waste your time asking him, he doesnt answer them
I dont understand why people are writing negative about him .HE is a great teacher. tests are straight out of homwrok problems. do the homework problems and you lget an A for sure. very easy class. TAKE HIM
Easy. You don't have to pay attention to him as long as you do the homework problems. He is very cocky and struts around the classroom. He makes stupid mistakes on the board. Then, when you correct him, he can never figure out what you're saying to him. He speaks with a thick accent. There are four tests and he drops one if you have 90% attendance.
He is a really nice guy, but he is not very clear. I rarely went to class and got an A. There are tests only, which are hand written by him. Homework should be done if you're lost in the class, but is not required.
Easiest class I've had at Loyola. I never went and still got an A. All the test problems come from the homeworks he assigns, and all of the homework problems have the answers in the back of the book. If you usually need extra help for math, though, I wouldn't recomment him, since he's pretty vague and hard to understand.
He was a funny professor, but difficult to understand due to his accent... he teaches directly from the book, so its useless to attend class, but he takes attendance every day so you have to go... not a horrible teacher, so if you get stuck with him you'll be ok... but if you have a choice go with another professor
I am so happy when i took the finals.. he used the problems from the previous exams EXACTLY the same. so happy his final is so easy.. he is a GPA booster.
GPA Booster. Quite a boring class but the tests and exams are extremely easy. Really nice guy, but not the most approachable as he is not too dedicated to the teaching aspect of his career. Do the homework and review it and you get an A...that simple. He's very intellegent as he has published a book. However, a lot of teaching yourself. Take him.
cannot understand him AT ALL!!! he has a very thinck accent. hes not clear at all. teaching style seems very lazy and UNCLEAR. extremely random. i walked out of the middle of class the second day and dropped his class. i cant understand wtf he says!!!!!!!!!!!! and hes too vague!!!!!
Attendance is a must he takes roll at the end of the class!! His test are pretty much the homework, and the final is a combination of the first 3 test. However..it was impossible for me to understand what he was saying..I could barely knew when he was saying my name!!
The worst excuse for a professor I have ever seen. Doesn't even speak English properly. Teaches directly out of the book so there was no point whatsoever going to class except the mandatory attendance. He does not use email and is impossible to contact. He did not show up to the final and miscalculated my grade. AVOID at all costs.
All you really need to do is do the homework problems in order pass the class. There are four tests and he literally pulls the problems for the test out of the homework. overall, easy class.
I love this teacher. He's funny and you get used to his accent. (My favorite is when he says 'factor') He doesn't check the homework and all of the test questions come directly from the homework. So if you do the homework right before the test, it's an easy A. I took him again on purpose.
His tests are easy if you just to the hw, because he pulls exact questions from the book. His lectures are really boring, though, because you can't understand half of what he says. If you are willing to study on your own and are pretty good at math, its easy. If you find math to be really difficult, I really recommend you do NOT take his class.
You need to be able to teach yourself because the man may give you questions on the tests that come from the hw, but not all are in the book. Also, the man is impossible to get ahold of for help. Phone number given is the math dept and he doesn't use email. If you come to 90% of the classes (only miss 3) then he drops a test
its an easy A because he gives you the exam questions. The questions are the homework word for word number for number. He is a bad bad teacher. Cannot understand him at all. If you are a major do not take this class. But if you cannot do calc just go to tutor or get someone to show you the homework. Overall I would take again.
If you retained and understood all the the material from algebra in high school you will do fine. He uses all the problems from the homework on his tests. But if you don't understand math well dont take him he sucks at explaining
This guy is nice and tries really hard to be funny and make the class better but he is very hard to understand when he speaks. I got through the class because it was all review but I wouldn't take him again.
He is hilarious! A little hard to understand, but helpful/ easy teacher. loves to get lots of extra credit. 4 tests, drops 1 if you miss less than 3 classes + final. homework is extra credit usually 3 or 4 percentage points
If you haven't taken Calc before, I would not take him , but since I did, it was almost elementary [and I usually suck at math to be honest]. Tests are basically homework questions, so if you work those out, you will be fine. The lowest exam is dropped if you are there 90% of the time and it was fair. Hard to understand at times but ask for help!
If you already took any kind of pre-calc or calc, this class will be a breeze. exams just like homework questions. attendance mandatory. no quizzes. homework is not graded, but is extra credit for mid-term. very friendly and approachable. hard to understand him speak, but if you ask, he will explain again, no problem. fast paced class. easy A.
This class is a joke. The tests are the EXACT problems from the hw. He can be hard to understand at first but you start to understand him. After midterms he gives extra credit for doing hw, which I don't see why you wouldn't do the hw seeing that it's basically the test. If you don't miss more than 3 classes then he drops the lowest test score.
be prepared to teach yourself. do ALL the homework. his tests solely consist of the assigned homework problems. you don't have to take the final if you have a 90% or above. easy A
His accent is hard to understand but this class is an easy A. The tests are the exact same problems as the homework. You don't have to show up to class to pass this class. I would take him again!
Sow is a great guy and super nice. He is a little hard to understand when you first meet him because he has a very strong accent however you get used to it. Tests are made straight from the homework questions. Don't need to show up for class. Just do the homework and you'll do fine on the tests. Easy A
Great person, but not great professor. His lectures aren't clear and I leave learning nothing. Also, accent can be hard to understand sometimes. BUT- lectures and test problems are straight out of book so possible to do well-you just have to teach yourself or find someone who gets it. If you show up 90% of time, lowest test dropped.
there are 4 tests in the class. You get extra credit for doing the homework which is 3% added to your test grade. Not much to do, but he doesnt do a good job teaching the material. I had to teach myself so if you dont mind doing that, then this is a class for you. Little hard to understand.
Seems like a good guy but is a terrible prof. He talks at you instead of teaching you. there are tons of chances for extra credit, and he will drop a test grade if you miss 3 or less classes. lowest you can get on a test is 40%. homework is for extra credit and optional. exam questions from homework. easy class but you have to teach yourself
Professor Sow is a great guy but he is a horrible professor. His classes are very boring and long, he does not let the students to interact with the class he just keeps going on and on with out even asking if the class got the topic he is talking about or not. In his classes you simply teach yourself because he does not.
Dr. Sow was such a great professor, I don't know why his reviews aren't better! The class is based off of 3 exams, and the lowest exam score gets dropped. The homework is extra credit and gets added back onto your test score. The exams are THE EXACT problems as the homework, so if you do that there is no reason to not do well! TAKE HIM!!!
exam questions are taken from the book. If you only miss class up to 3 times then he drops your lowest exam. He does not teach you. Youtube will be your best friend
He is a nice enough guy and you can tell he is super intelligent but he is not a good teacher. His lectures are painfully long and he never looks up from the blackboard. His accent makes the few words he speaks very hard to understand. I will say that the exams are pretty easy and he drops the lowest of your 3 if you come to class.
Dr. Sow is very nice but he only shows examples and doesn't explain what he is doing. Do the homework because it is almost the same as the 3 exams and it is counted as extra credit. There are 3 exams and 1 cumulative final, but he drops the lowest score. This year, he let everyone with an A exonerate the final. Take him for an easy A.
hard to understand due to his accent, but if you have basic understanding of precalc then the class should be easy. Hw for each unit is due the day of the test. Tests are literally composed of questions from the hw, and he tells you which problems will be test questions. If you do the hw and review before the test, it should be an easy A
Very hard to understand what he is saying because of his accent. His lectures are very dry and not very helpful. Don't take him if you aren't naturally good at math. Not an easy A by any means.
His accent is a bit hard to understand and lectures are really dry, if you do get him get ready to go to office hours or the tutoring center. Tests are mainly based on what was on the homework so do the homework.
If you have already taken pre-calc and understand it, take him! He has a very thick accent and is hard to understand, but if you already know precalc, the tests are SO easy (basically problems from the homework and he helps you). Homework is due on test days, but he barely looks at it. Highly recommend if you know your stuff.
Mr Sow is a great guy. He is the most innocent man and is very lenient with his students. If students want to push the test back, he pushes the test back and use the original test day as an optional review day. Homework is extra credit on tests and tests are very simple if you do the examples outside of class. You have to look at the book for help.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING. His grading process makes absolutely no sense, & his accent is so thick i cant understand a thing. He wasnt even sure how to use Sakai, the website for the school/online learning. Nothing is learned in lecture and we just show up to get our attendance taken. BEWARE.
Really nice guy, but not a good teacher at all. Super smart, but is very frustrating to take class from because he just reads the textbook to you. Dont recommend taking this class at all if you dont know pre-calc
If you're taking MATH117, I would not recommend Dr. Sow. His accent is very difficult to understand and he treats the class as if it was 1995, does not post anything online (grades, etc.) and does not make the class engaging. He is definitely a great guy, but if you actually want to learn in this class you'll have to teach it to yourself.
Love Aboucar Sow... as a person. His teaching sucked however. All he did was read off the examples and rewrite them on the board. Didn't explain much, and you could NOT understand his grading. Try not to take him.
Just don't. save your gpa and mental health.
Not the best teacher but does care. usually takes off points and then gives them back if you advocate for yourself. basically just taught myself for 3 months. did not listen in class, I don't think anyone did because it didn't help. nice guy tho
if you actually want to learn something this is not your class. He does not use Sakai so you can never see your grades unless he hands the tests and quizzes back. You only have tests and quizzes and homework for each chapters are due before the tests. It is relaxed and you don't have to pay attention and can def study a day before.
He seems like a great guy personally though as a professor he's not good at all. His accent is very hard to understand. The class is incredibly easy, and I didn't pay attention at all. You can cram everything a day before the exams. If you want to learn something I wouldn't take him, if you want an easy grade then go for it.
Not alot of hw but you DO NOT LEARN ANYTHINGGG!! He does not teach well. This is an "easy class" but you will learn nothing. Do not recommend him.
Sow is a great guy, but I did not find him to be the most helpful professor. He does not use the gradebook in sakai, and his grading marks on tests and quizzes can be hard to read too. Sow's lectures were very hard for me and others to understand, so I would only recommend if you plan on learning the math on your own time.
Terrible professor! Not consistent with grading; some answers he'll mark right and others he'll mark wrong even if students have the same answer- I don't think he knows what he's teaching or doing. The content is not too hard and is fairly easy to learn yourself, so just watch videos online if you're stuck with him. The class is very disorganized!!
He's really nice, but sometimes really hard to understand. Grading is very confusing and inconsistent.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! While the material is easy, this professor is impossible to understand. He's a nice guy, but you will not retain any material. Homework is optional, and the only thing in the grade book is exams. If you have the option, PLEASE take the class with any other professor. You will thank me later.
I would not suggest to take this class from this professor at all. The professor is a nice guy, but he is hard to understand and doesn't teach the material well at all. I did average in the class, but I was only able to do decent with a tutor and Khan Academy.
DONT TAKE HIM!!! he doesn't explain the material just reads the textbook and he's hard to understand. he literally explains problems in a really confusing way and it's not helpful for the tests
This professor does not know how to grade. Several times, we've gone over tests and I've had to speak with him about how I got an answer right and he would have to correct my grade. No class participation. He uses WileyPlus but a good chunk of the homework is not explained in Wiley nor the class. He's a nice guy at least.
He is a nice guy, but his lectures are all over the place. He is sloppy when he writes on the board, making it difficult to understand his writing. He goes off topic a lot, it's hard to understand him talks in a low voice and has a strong accent. Grading does not make sense, put stuff on test we did not go over. Overall super confused, DON'T TAKE.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! If you are not good at math, he does not explain things clearly. Hard to understand him with his thick accent, does not post grades or answer emails- makes you call him or text him and he barely responds. Grading is all over the place, he doesn't know how to explain content. Super confusing teacher-don't take class.
Don't take this class. I got a 97, and for someone who doesn't understand math, this is the worst possible class to take. Sow will use incorrect answers on the keys(for practice problems), you will have to check your own work because his grading is likely wrong. He also has extremely confusing lectures/handwriting. Nice guy but a terrible prof.
Dr. Sow is a very sweet man, but a very bad teacher. He just goes over the textbook poorly explaining topics, no interactive/practice in class. I used high school notes and YouTube videos to teach myself. Study group helps a lot! At least Homework was extra credit, and everyone was struggling together Def worst class I've taken
Horrible teacher. Grading was inconsistent, and class was a waste of time. You will be teaching yourself the material so invest in Photo math or a good study app. Homework is extra credit, and I think there was a grading curve.
overall horrible
Good Lord, don't take him for this class. Dr. Sow is kind, but I'd rather go through another torsion than repeat it. Grades are only tests and quizzes; homework is extra credit. My first test was a 17% curved to 70%. Lectures are nearly impossible to follow and have fun on the final, it's one of the worst I've taken. Fell in love with grade curves
This class was only okay because I took it in high school. If I had no prior knowledge, then I have no idea. He does not teach, just has us go in groups with worksheets, and barely explains them. Has all the quizzes be dropped because everyone does bad on them? Also does not ever start class until 15 minutes after it starts.
There is defiantly a language barrier. His writing on the whiteboard look like hieroglyphics. I did IB SL math and got a 6, but this got hard at the end. The homework is insanely hard and doesn't cover a lot of what we did in class. Overall, unless you have a strong background in this math, try to get someone else or be prepared to self-teach.
This professor doesn't do ANY teaching. the whole class is group work, but group work is impossible because no one knows what they are doing unless they were good at their high school precalc. if you haven't taken precalc in a while, GO TO YOUTUBE. he will teach you nothing. He is hard to understand, writing is unclear, and just plain bad teacher.
If you can take someone else, please do. He literally doesn't teach; most of the time, he hands out a worksheet for you to "teach yourself" even if we haven't covered the content yet. If he does teach, you can barely hear him and his handwriting is barely legible.
