Teaches like he's in a rush, very impatient, bright guy but not a "teacher."

Nice guy...Brilliant. Not a teacher.
Discrete Math....very very hard, but you learn your stuff if you pay attention
Prof. Mantell is fast-paced, high energy, and brilliant. This guy *really* knows his stuff! Very entertaining but you must keep up or you will drown!

Had him for Calc. II a couple of summers ago. The best math prof. I ever had!!! Explains math so you can understand it, not just memorize formulas and techniques!!! Very willing to help!!! You'd better know ALL prerequisite math though!!
Intro. to Proofs - learned SO MUCH in that course!!! Has helped me in every math course ever since (at my present university)!!! Mantell's style really fosters learning and growth...plus his class is quite fun!!! Very fair and very available for extra!
Very challenging!!! But knowledgable and helpful (if you do the work!!!)...If you are looking for an easy grade, go elsewhere...if you want to learn math, Mantell's your man!!!
Very hard class. Learned a lot. Great teacher, always there for extra help. Could explain things a little better
very good looking. konws what he is talking about. Always available and helpful during office hours. He actually goes out of his way to help you. If you really want to learn math, go to him. If you want to memorize, run!!!
He has high expectations. He has taught at Polytechnic Univ. and thus encourages and sort of forces independent study. Unclear not a good teacher. Extremely demanding without much help offered in class.
I disagree with the last rater...Mantell is (usually) VERY clear and makes it obvious he wants everyone to understand! If you do not understand, then just ask - either in class or out...he is VERY available outside of class!!! Sure, the class is challenging...is DE's supposed to be easy??!!!
Prof. Mantell was one of the better computer professors I had at Nassau. His class was interesting and he was laid back and open to our ideas.
Even though he's hard, he is really interesting. He helps you out with questions. He's a funny guy and talks alot about stuff. He likes handball. His tests are hard but the good thing is that he curves it. He gives alot of interesting assignments whcih are challenging somewhat. -graduate
Best prof. in the math department. Hes helpful but he requires a lot of work. MAT 200 is the beginning on whether or not you want to continue studying math. Because you will need this from here on out. He's cool and again his exams, assignments are a bit challenging but it's all good. He also gives a curve.
Very unclear. Tests are very hard. Implies that everyone is stupid unless you understand the class. Also, told me I was going to get a C if I got a C on everything else and I wound up getting a D?
I'm not sure how helpful the lectures were, I was able to do well on tests with outside knowledge. It helps to do the hw... test questions based on really tricky stuff.. fun bonus questions. The lecture on probability was like Huh??! Jank! Sometimes you get what he talks about, other times you might be left in the dark. Overall great prof though
Before I took this class I didn't know that you could actually receive a grade of an F ---. The class was a complete nightmare and he refuses to give extra credit or quizes. He failed half of my class.
He is very challenging but I could say he could be the most intelligent guy in the school. His lectures were clear and interesting. In order to do well on the exams a great amount of time must be spent on home assignments. He is a person you can count on for any type of help. VERY INTERESTING MAN TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE WILLING TO LEARN MATH..
The best prof for sb LOVES math. He's a calculus&calculator freak, a very knowledgable and really kool man.Lecture is clear&interesting.U have to do hw to keep up with his lecture and test. Test is tough, but for sb who studies seriously&like really Math,it's an interesting challenge.REALLY AVAILABLE FOR HELP AFTER CLASS. I learned a lot from him.
First day of class about 25 students. Last day about 4. Enough to say!!!!!!
The single most de-motivational mathematical experience in my life!
A very smart and good looking guy but not a good teacher. He assumes that no questions from students means everyone gets it. In reality, we are so lost that we don't know what to ask. Really full of himself.
He is a good Professor. I took Calc I/Fall'05 and Calc II/Spring'06. I got an A in both classes.... You have to work at you own if you want a good grade. I learned a lot with him...........
I am still scarred by this professor. I am an A student but he gave me a D and made me feel totally stupid. The class was months ago but I still am sad about how he killed my self confidence in math. HE CANNOT TEACH!!!! He is not a nice human being.
to the last commenter, I'm a C student and got a B+ from him. Just takes some effort.
The best math professor I've ever met!
Very good but difficult teacher. Don't take him unless you absolutely love math or else you will fail. Even amazing math students have a hard time finishing the exams.
This guy is a machine. He has more energy then the whole class combined.he thinks fast and it dosent take him anytime to answer questions. I would def recommend him if you really want to understand math better. He will really refresh your memory from starting elem algebra to pre calc. Not an ez A....
He is an ok teacher. He is kind of all over the place and spends to much time on homework problems and then does not have time to introduce new material, so in the end the class has a lot of homework questions again next class. He is a fair grader and gives lots of partial credit on the exams. He curves the tests.
Horrible teacher, great guy though. He expects you to know everything from your prior math courses, which is pretty unfair. His tests are hard, he ups the level of the questions on the tests. The majority of kids in the class have gotten a 40 or below on the tests
He is a very knowledgeable man. Can tackle any problem quickly. Really knows his stuff. Unfortunately his exams are very difficult. Calculus 2 is not an easy subject, but I think his exams are a bit over-kill. I took it during a summer session.
He is a tough professor. But he loves math, tries his best to challenge his students. The work is do-able, but you cannot be lazy. oh, and his tests are curved
He is a super duper smart and very hard professor. He doesn't take an attendance but if you miss his lecture, YOU ARE SCREWED. However, if you are ready to follow his lecture and try to learn mathmatical stuff, he is the best math professor. He even helps personal stuff(He wrote me a recommendation letter). IMO, he should be a professor at MIT.
Possibly the best math teacher you can ever have if you are willing to do the work. You will learn in his class. Exams are pretty tough but usually there is a curve. Sometimes gives take home exams. Exam questions tend to be applications of subjects, not just from textbook.
One of the greatest professors I've ever had. He's one of the few professors left at colleges who actually care about his students. He is VERY tough, but VERY fair. He knows his stuff, and only wants to pass his knowledge along to you. I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone who wants to get into higher mathematics.
If you want to do well on his class, you have to work very hard. Although his tests are challenging, there's a curve and he's very generous when it comes partial credit. Take his class if you like math.
He is a very good Professor. I took Calc I/Fall'05 and Calc II/Spring'06. I got an A in both classes.... You have to work at you own if you want an A grade. I learned a lot with him........... I will take any class with him again........
He definitely knows his stuff, but it can keep him from understanding what a student isn't getting. He broke things down step-by-step, but I can't say i followed & I didn't feel that the homework prepared me for tests. The teacher I have now is rated low here, but I think he's great. Everyone learns differently.Good partial credit.Bad curve. Many drop
very helpful and is very willing to hents until you understand
Out of a class of 26 students, I believe my Calc I class finished with 7 students left in the class. That said, he's an extremely fair professor. His tests are legendarily difficult but he's fairly generous with the curve. You absolutely must do homework in order to pass his class. If you are continuing in math or engineering I highly recommend him
Great, intelligent professor. He can answer almost any question regarding any math course you've ever taken. Be warned before you take his class, if you want an A, you have to work very hard. This means studying the subject as a college student SHOULD study. If you want to learn really math, take Mantell. If you want an easy A look elsewhere.
DO NOT take him for Math 114. He barely went over the h.w and told us to go to his office hours if we had questions from it. Some of us have other classes and work so that was impossible. The math center was more helpful. When he realized we're failing that's when he started giving us take home assignments. So glad I'm done with his class!
Abraham Mantell is by far the best math teacher at Ncc. However, people that understand his method end up dropping the class which is about 60 to 80% of the class. In order to succeed in his class you have to study like you never done it before. Be a self learner cause there is no perfect teacher but with with him you learn more than math. Study:)
Great Professor! His exams tend to be hard, because he does not feel education should be about making things easy for students to coast through life. If you are a serious hard working student you will learn a lot and get a decent grade; otherwise I recommend you look elsewhere. But, he is a lenient grader and does curve tests.
Okay first of all, Mantell has a great teaching method and always tries to make the class entertaining with a couple of jokes. Just be warned before you take him; if you are looking for an easy math class, stay away because his class is like a WAR. If you are an engineering, or math major, TAKE HIM. Just remember not to "drink and derive"
Good guy, sucks as a teacher. Half my class withdrew wouldnt that be an indication to him that we dont understand his teaching method? He taught diff ways to do the same problems which confused me and he wasnt interesting in class
Horrible! RUN don't walk! avoid him at all costs! SO HARD! I did very well on the quizzes but could not pass a single exam. Almost everyone in the class failed the exams! He is also very rude!
Professor Mantell is one of the best math professors at Nassau CC. Don't believe a poor rating from folks who don't like math to begin with. Prof Mantell loves math and he loves teaching it. His classes just aren't meant to be easy! People looking for a gut class should steer clear. Math and engineering majors will get a lot out of his classes.
To do well on his exams, focus on understanding the theory rather than just do problems the way he showed you. His exams could be made simple if you focus on how the material is used in everyday life and not "when do I use this formula". Mantell is actually doing us a favor. If it were not for his tough class, I wouldnt make it this far in EE!!!
You gotta respect this guys math skills. Its really something. However in my opinion his class is just unreasonably difficult. Im all for a challenge and i like math, but he makes it really stressful. Tests are near impossible to finish in the given time and the questions are more difficult than homework. The whole class is failing or has dropped.
Professor Mantell is by far the best math professor I have ever had. I took his summer MTH 225 class and, despite having prior knowledge of most of the topics, learned a lot, and was challenged a lot. He does a great job at explaining everything. However, the tests aren't easy, but will be much easier if you consistently read the text and do the hw
Tests are too long for a 75 minute course.
He gives you 4 or 5 homework quizzes. They are open notebook. In addition he has 3 exams and one final. The two exams were in class and the third exam was a take home. He gives you and option of 60% class, 10% quizzes and 30% final. Or 40% class, 10% quizzes, 50% final.
Impossible tests... I wish I could rate him higher, he's an incredible professor and a remarkably brilliant mathematician, but passing his classes is nearly impossible.
On this website and in his class I hear/see a wide range of opinions regarding the difficulty of his classes. To clear things up, study as much as you can and on the tests focus on the quantity of your answers instead of quality because he is relatively generous with regards to partial credit, you're not going to be able to finish his tests.
Really goes in depth on each topic as if he were covering each specific detail so that you don't have an excuse on the test to say "we didn't learn that". He really understands mathematics and makes sure he's taught you everything you would need as a mathematician, engineer, computer scientist, or any math related field.
This guy is a brilliant mathematician, and a good professor as well, as has been said before, but his class is ridiculously hard. The tests are extraordinarily lengthy. Out of about 30 kids in the class, half have dropped, and only 4 or 5 of the remaining people are taking the final.
He's a nice guy, a nice professor and he's great at explaining things. That being said, to say his class is exceptionally difficult is an understatement. Any class you have with him will undoubtedly be the hardest class you take in a given semester. I'm at SBU right now and he's harder than anything you will ever see if you go to SBU.
Professor Mantell is an amazing instructor. His knowledge in mathematics is phenomenal. He's a really great guy, however you must put in a lot of hard work into his class if you would like to pass with a decent grade. He gives a reasonable amount of homework, but when it comes to his exams they're extremely rigorous.
Mantell is the best math prof I've ever had. He teaches so you UNDERSTAND material rather than just regurgitate it for exams, which are not difficult despite what people say, they're just lengthy. He gives a LOT of partial credit, so write something for every question. If you want an easy class, run. If you want to understand calc, he's your man.
Prof Mantell genuinely loves math and enjoys teaching it. However, he'll explain the math by using the book's examples which are usually easy. He may say he'll just test your core understandings during exams but be warned that it is not the case. Tests can be hard. Online assignments are bad since the website loops itself if you get one wrong answe
literally the worst. Makes up problems on the spot in class and it's just so unorganized. Don't take him unless you can devote a lot of time to this class.
He moves way too fast and he gets off-topic a lot. He gives us the most unreasonable questions on tests and quizzes, like things he never taught us in class. he just expects us to know.
My experience with professor mantell was pretty good. I think he a well rounded professor who does his best to try and teach you and help you succeed. Sometimes I get a little over whelmed if I ever missed a class because I would be lost when I came back. Most of the time his lectures are easy but his tests can be a bit challenging. But hes great!
Seems like he'll be interesting at first and want to help you do well. HE MOVES WAY TO FAST AND DOESNT TAKE EXTRA TIME TO EXPLAIN THINGS WELL SO YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. read the textbook and go to the help center to pass. I DONT RECOMMEND HIS COURSE.
Dude makes his tests impossible. on our second of three tests for the semester the class average was less than a 50% said that it was all our fault and had nothing to do with his teaching, and he would not give a curve, complete and utter bull. likewise his homework does not give you a accurate idea of the test. and does not give review of anykind.
I liked his teaching method, but other students were clearly confused. He expects us to know every topic since the 9th grade. He over-complicated his teaching method, and took political jabs throughout the semester, which many students didn't appreciate. Maybe if he took that time to simplify the way he teaches, more students would pass his class
Prof. Mantell is a smart with a passion for math. However, he is awful at teaching. During his lectures, which were boring, and only followed the textbook, I felt disengaged from the class. His voice was monotone and put me to sleep. His tests and hw, were harder than anything done in class, so I had to teach myself the course. Useless as a teacher
I would not take Prof. Mantell again, he is very boring and his lectures are not good. He reads off notes and expects us to understand the material. Avoid taking a class with him if you can. You will want to sleep!
Extremely detailed lecture. Breaks down topics down to an atom. Lots of hw so I hardly had to study for tests. Exams are tough, but the q's are similar to the hw and the rigorous ones, are from the examples in the class notes. Class notes are always posted on BB so no need to take any. FYI: You need at least a strong B+ in Pre & Calc 1 to do well
He is very knowledgeable, but he expects everyone else to be on his level. His tests are planned out in the beginning of the sem but still extremely hard. He posts his notes on BB but he does not record his lectures. His HW is assigned online and has 3 tries. The thing costs $70 per sem. If you want to have an A, this course is not for you.
He is knowledgable and very nice person. If you want to get a good grade in his class, you definitely need put a lot effort. His homework and 3 tests are hard, but he's not a tough grader. He offers two or three section homework every week, each section has little over 10 questions, which I usually spend about 1 hour for each section.
Prof is really not a tough grader. As long as your method is correct in the exam, he will give you most of the points. The assignments are a reasonable amount and more difficult than the exams. If you take the time to complete the assignments, the exams aren't a problem. Also I love his shirt and tie combo lol.
Prof. Mantell is very knowledgeable. I came out of HS with a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam and found Calc 2 to be significantly harder. I think most complaints about his difficulty stem from how challenging Calc 2 is, not the professor specifically. Online HW costs $70, with 24 assignments taking about an hour each. He allows calculators on all tests.
Very good even though challenging, would take it again
The exams may seem difficult, but he gives enough partial credit to ensure you do not fail. My friend averaged his exams in the 60 and ended the class with a C+. You must be extremely familiar with Math to get a higher grade such as an A. The homework may seem tough but it forces you to know the math, especially during the 4-week summer course.
Excellent professor, great person, teaches well, gives tons of partial credit. His exams are moderately more difficult compared to the average for Calc 1. Take him if you want to learn, don't take him if you want an easy grade.
Differential Equations is a tough class but Prof. Mantell knows his stuff. Tests are based on online HW questions and class notes. If you do all of the homework and genuinely study it you will be fine.
Despite what the other reviews say, I've grown to respect Prof. Mantell. I did not do well on the first exam (being sick with the flu did not help), but he's passionate about teaching and wants the student to really understand. His tests are difficult and time is limited, though he gives generous curves. I think if you really cram in, you'll do ok
differential equations was difficult and mantell didn't really help. his tests were super hard and a lot of homework was due in a short period of time. but, he's genuine and cares for his students and makes dad jokes lol.
The exams were extremely difficult.
Took Professor Mantell for Mathematics for educators he is a honest and well respected professor that will motivate students to take the time and understand the material and his a very easy grader gives you partial credit in exams for the wrong answer but as long as work is shown. The only reason I gave him 4 stars is because he responds slow to em
In my opinion the best professor at this college. Originally, I thought his exams were harder than average, but honestly I think other professor's are the ones that are too easy. Tons of partial credit on exams, but be warned the average scores on them were failing. If you do not intend to pursue math-related and just want an easy grade, avoid.
Lowkey really fast paced. Great for math because he teaches you to understand, not to memorize.
Ugh. Avoid. I'm not done with his class yet, but your grade is composed from HW, 2 tests, and a final. UPDATE: I wanted to transfer the credit from his class, but the SUNY transfer system requires at least a C. I got a D. Do not take him in summer session, maybe he is better in Fall/Spring?? I'm taking Calc 1 at my university and have a B- rn.
