One of the worst professors I've had at Cal. Extremely messy writing that interferes with student learning time and time again. Frequent errors in lectures. Does a terrible job at explaining concepts- merely derives equations for the entire hour. Does very few examples, yet they are what we are tested on. Stay away from this guy, his class is hell.
Good at teaching in beginning but got worse as semester went on (maybe it's b/c I already learned the beginning material in AP)... if you have not had AP background, do not take this prof. Goes extremely quickly and doesn't really teach concepts. Test questions were very difficult (7A equivalent questions sometimes) and out of no where.

Exams were really hard. If you put relevant equations, you'll get partial credit. Don't memorize the solutions to problems b/c that won't help. His exam problems go deeper than that. No need to go to lecture, I just studied off of black lightning notes. They were really good. His lectures sucked though; many mistakes and bad at explaining concepts.
Speliopoulos was decently clear and gave plenty of helpful examples in lecture. Sometimes his math could be tedious and advanced for the class. The first midterm was easy, the second hard, and the final middling. Comfort level with geometry is a big factor. I personally enjoyed the class, and had a good GSI. Key to grade is a great cheat sheet.
Professor Speliotopoulous is extremely meticulous to detail and derivations during lectures. I recommend getting black lighting notes along with attendance because it truly reinforces your understanding of physics. Helpful and patient to answer questions after class. Exams really tested your understanding and application of concepts. Great Prof
Just horrible. Horrible lectures full of proofs and derivations, horrible tests that were hard and poorly worded, overall a horrible experience. Didn't learn any physics from him and the book is equally bad so I got nothing out of the class. Do not take a chance with him, just take with another prof another semester.
He's so terrible at teaching. His tests are way too difficult for first year physics. Even the grad students have trouble solving the problems. It's ridiculous.
Horrible professor. I used to think that he wasn't that bad, and all the reviews were just because the people reviewing him were from physics 8A and just didn't like physics, i love physics, and speiliotopolous cannot teach it. His lectures are useless. The only good thing about his lectures is that he has a lot of experiments. Pick a differentProf
Worst freshman experience at Cal. I know he tried to teach clearly, but his tests were so difficult that it was hard to do based on the shotty job he did teaching the subjects
Speliotopolous is extremely hard... his lectures are esoteric and proof-heavy, and his tests are ridiculously hard. The average for one midterm was 25%. Most of the learning goes on in section, from the book, or while doing homework. By the way, if you're in math 1b, read ahead to differential equations--it really helps.
The problems with him are not entirely his fault. 7A uses a very weak textbook, so with weak lectures you're in trouble. The MIT physics lectures are on iTunes for free and cover the exact same material. They're wonderful. They got me through this class, and I actually managed to get a good understanding of the material. Do what I did.
Horrible Tests that make you want to cry! Never take this teacher if you can avoid it! All he does is derive the formulas that you actually need to USE on the tests, but rarely does more then one problem in class...RUN!!!!
Lectures are difficult but clear, structured, and really helpful; the exams are difficult but far from impossible, also the class is curved so it is really easy to pass (but hard to get an A)
Spelio is the MAN. I don't get all the hate! He spent a little too much time on derivations and his exams were pretty tough, but I really got the material because of him. As long as you go to class and do the homework, you'll do fine with this guy. Very good lecturer.
The absolute worst professor at Cal. Lectures were full of proofs and he went so fast that it became impossible to follow. His exams were beyond hard, we had 3 people get above 50% with an average of 25% or something absurd like that.
Not as bad as his rating suggests. Although his lectures are very proof heavy and mastering physics is kind of useless, this semester I believe he made his exams easier. I think he is a good lecturer, however he needs to reconsider the material he lectures on (needs more examples, less proofs).
I came in with less math expertise than most students in this class and scored 2/3 SD's below average for both midterms. Luckily I beat the average on the final and pulled a B-, but this was in part due to having a good GSI. While Spelio is a nice guy, he spends too much time on proofs (which you don't need to know at all] rather than examples.
Was the reason I became a Physics major. Very helpful and clear. May spend a bit too much time on intricacies, but this opens up your eyes to how deep something as simple as Physics 7A can be.
He speaks clearly and explains everything really well. I was absent a few days and just walked into his office hours and told him I was gone, and he went over everything with me. Goes through a lot of proofs, but doesn't test on them. Tests a lot on algebra skills as well as physics.
Very different from what his rating suggests. He is a great professor.
Best physics professor! The lectures are very clear, with lots of examples and proofs! I can learn many things besides he textbook. The theories were well explained, and the examples are very closely related to the hw problems and exams. His exams are reasonably hard. Still many of the classmates I know get almost full credit on MTs and finals.
Enjoyable lectures, TERRIBLE tests. First midterm was relatively easy, second one was ridiculously hard (which, as the professor told us, was on purpose) as was the final. You have to go to lecture to succeed in this course, the book that is assigned is not the best at explaining things, it just throws formulas at you.
He is a great professor, always very clear and will follow the pace that students need. His midterms were fair but his final followed his reputation. Study hard for his final!
Very nice professor. Extremely patient and willing to help any student with any question. Tests are difficult though but he is helpful and curve is helpful.
Really nice and approachable. Lecture was interesting. Class was fast paced so it's helpful to use BOTH the textbook and attend lecture. Don't cheat on mastering physics, if you do, it's useless and before you know it, it'll be too late to catch up. Go to office hours because he can explain the same concept different ways there.
He is absolutely amazing. He is very patient, very clear, and super nice! I'm not sure where the scary reviews came from- maybe 7A/7B? I had him for both semesters and he's a really great teacher. His exams are FAR from unreasonable. He curves very fairly. Hands down one of the best instructors I've had at Cal.
For both his Physics 8A/8B, I really don't get the bad reviews. He slows down when needed and answers everyone's questions and is super patient. He's clear about what he wants you to know. He likes deriving things a lot but it really is for our understanding. GSIs in physics also make a big difference. Did average, but loved these classes overall!
Awesome professor! Highly recommend! He teaches well and he is patience in the class. During the lab, you can ask him as many times as you like if you question, he won't get angry. Take him, test is not very hard. The best professor I have ever had.
easiest teacher ever, easy A! just attend classes, and he gives you A. i strongly recommend u take this prof!! no comment!
Terrible! He would make things way more complicated than they actually are. and the exams were really hard.
This was a really fun class. Spelio is a great lecturer. His exams are really well thought out and are doable. The material is clearly presented and the methods are well taught. Demos are fun. It all boils down to your GSI though. Very doable class, although you'll hear nightmares about 7A.
Spelio doesn't enjoy teaching this class, because I believe it is too watered down. The material is hard and the information is not organized well. The exams are difficult. Depends, ultimately on your GSI. Spelio remains a fascinating lecturer though. If you're going to suffer through physics, might as well do it with a good lecture.
I am preparing for the MCAT and I realize how awesome he taught physics. He is a great lecturer & very helpful in office hour, use him. Very helpful demos, don't just enjoy them, learn from them. Eng is a hard lang for me, so I had to listen to his lecture again at home and God, that helped so much. He is awesome, but not an easy A class, try hard.
Spelio is a very likable lecturer. Lectures are extremely clear, have lots of concrete examples and Spelio is very attentive to questions. Moreover, his office hours are amazing. Rarely anyone comes and he works out his exam problems. He's passionate and cares about students. However, his exams are absolutely KILLER.
Spelio is the best 7 series physics professor at Cal. Extremely clearconstantly interrupts his lectures to ask "Is everyone cool with this?" He has a wonderful way of explaining concepts (great drawings too). Expects a lot from his students. Pay attention & you will be inspired by his love of the subject. Exams are written with the help of Satan.
Actual god.
Spelio made me love Physics. I'm not joking. PLEASE don't let the tests scare you! See, I was kinda meh on 7A . But Spelio is an AMAZING teacher. His tests are hell, but work hard and go to lecture and you will actually have the tools to do well. He teaches so well and cares so much about the class and it shows. Honestly my favorite prof 3
The hardest professor I have had at Cal in my three years of pre-med, and even so, I feel like I have learned more with Spelio than I have with any other professor. He deserves a lot of praise for his teaching, but do not expect an easy semester in the slightest. Extremely difficult exams.
His lectures were mainly based off of derivation, not examples. It's important to get outside practice if u feel masteringphysics isnt enough. material covers what u learn in high school in 2/3 of the course. understanding concepts and applying them is key to success in his classes. Exams are hard, but not too bad if you understand the conceptual.
It's definitely a must to read the book and take notes before attending lecture or else you will be very confused. The homework is very hard, but Speliotopoulos is phenomenal during office hours and helps you so much with any questions. I found myself really struggling at the beginning of the semester, but by going to office hours, I ended up fine.
Lectures were sometimes hard to follow, and homework was not always related to exams. However, the class overall is manageable, and although the exams are difficult (50-60% average), there is a generous curve.
I had spelio fro 8a/8b and I really enjoyed physics with him. He explains concepts well and has lots of interesting demos. Midterms/Finals are pretty difficult but there is a generous curve. If you do a lot of practice problems and pay attention in class you will be fine. The book is not necessary and GSI's aren't very helpful
Don't think you're sly by bs'ing the homework. His class depends on the tests. If you do the homework honestly and thoroughly, you'll ace these classes easy peazy. Slightly weird/arrogant in lecture, but a sweethart in office hours. Work hard and you got this!
Physics 5a is a tough class anyway, and Speliotopoulos gives hard problem sets and lectures well but abstractly and at a high level. The two midterms were medium in difficulty and the final was considerably harder, but both had generous partial credit and good curves so that you can afford to make mistakes and miss problems. Big on problem solving.
Most of the content of his lectures was proof-based, while his tests and homework required understanding of how to use the equations. The test questions were much more difficult than any homework or book problems. The content on our final was similar to the content my friend was learning in 7C. I learned the most from the book and online videos.
Although it was my first college course, Professor Spelio. made me love physics. His lectures were math heavy but very clear and easy to follow (I took notes and reviewed them because it was a bit fast). The way he taught made me question the 5W&1H for physics. Easy to reach via email and office hours. Tests are hard but well-thought and curved.
The first time I take upper div class, and his class was tough. The exam questions sometimes get pretty crazy. Glad I got an A- still
Same poster as the one below: just wanted to mention that many people used Chegg to cheat on homeworks, which is why they found exams so hard. Don't cheat, and you will realize just how helpful Spelio's lectures are when working through tough problem sets that prepare you well.
Avoid him if possible! I'm not a physics guy and this class totally ruins my interest in physics. His lecture goes so fast that neither the homework nor the discussion sessions could catch up. His lecture is proof based and in most cases, we just need to use the equations. His homework on ExpertTa is weird and way toooooo easy.
He starts the course very slow and in depth, and the content is clear. As he gets later in the course, he flies through material, covers irrelevant proofs that do not help on exams, and is very unclear. There were many occasions where the only thing I learned from lecture was the equations I needed, but hardly knew how to apply them.
Very nice teacher, but lacks in a few things. Lectures are awful, dry and makes me hate physics. His tests are EXTREMELY hard. While we had ALL short answers on our midterms and finals, the OTHER PHYSICS 8A class has multiple choice. If you have a choice between him and another Physics 8A prof., choose the other one. Take him for upper div courses.
He consistently displays what he believes a truly sedulous student is.
This review is about 2 years late. That being said, what I learned from Spelio is what is currently saving me in my last quantum class in my physics undergrad. If you're going for physics, you MUST take Spelio. Seriously. If not, he's a great teacher, but be prepared for one of the hardest classes you'll take. It's super interesting, but OH GOD
He is an interesting guy, pretty smart no doubt about it. Although, I consider he Lacks a little of teaching skills, his exams and quizzes are not that difficult (of course if you are prepared). He gives good extra credit, and is willing to help you during office hours. He looks intimidating but he is kinda funny.
loved him!!
He's a very cool professor, very smart, definitely cares about his students. Amid remote instructions during COVID, he still live streams his lecture in lecture halls just in order to show us the demos to help us understand concepts better. Definitely will take again. Class is not easy but also not that hard. He explains them very clearly.
This professor is garbage. Exams were extremely difficult and were worth 78% of your total grade. His lectures were also trash since it was just solving problems the whole time because he expected you to know the material before the lecture. Homework was also bs because they were not only difficult but he penalizes you for getting answers wrong.
His lectures are pretty interesting, but can be boring. He also says he doesn't curve, but he really does (his grade bins aren't made until the final and can change heavily against you), so be wary of that. Pretty stubborn (we couldn't' read his writing from chalk), but he was adamant on using. Homework questions are way easier than exams too! gl
Spelio was super nice this semester (Fall 2020) with covid and the election and everything. He's a typical Cal professor in that a lot of the course minutia are left to the GSIs, and he mostly just lectures, but his lectures are very clear and he's super nice about answering questions. His tests were very fair. Would take him again :)
Professor Spelio was pretty fair about the circumstances for the Fall 2020 semester! The grading scale wasn't solidified until a bit late in the semester and the final grading could have either helped or hurt you, but I think it was a fair scale. I'd say the lectures are helpful and clear, but the exams tend to be harder than lecture problems/hw.
Achilles really cares about his students is very accessible through emails. His lectures, with a lot of demos, are cool and funny. It seems like he has taught this class countless times so he knows what's the best way to make students understand the materials while maintaining the goals of the class. The tests are hard but not impossible.
Lectures are very boring, he doesnt do a lot of examples in class, and over explains the philosophy part of the concepts. Exams are out of this world! Avg exam scores 35-50% but the curve helps a lot! Really nice person though and helpful in OH. other portions of the class dont count for much of the grade, so just try to get above avg on tests
I took both 8A and 8B with Professor Spelio, and he teaches the content super well. It was my first physics classes, and 8B being personally harder. Professor does lots of practice problems and demos in class, so the hard part is to go back and make sure you understand why he does each step. Helpful to do practice problems and old exam problems.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! If he's the only one available for the semester, take the course a different semester. TERRIBLE lecturer. All of his lectures were just derivation of physics equations and he talks about the philosophy of the topics without actually discussing what they mean.
so MEDIANS were 50 and 39 out of a 100 as the questions are not something you can reasonably figure out on the spot. At least 45 or more dropped the class as the Finals room was looking sparse. Recognizes the topics are hard and doesn't make any additional suggestions or change his teaching style. If you're pre-health AVOID. Nice guy though.
Awesome lecturer. Teaches physics in an applicable manner-- tests are difficult, but he provides a decent amount of practice exams and homework questions. He is a fair grader. Lots of partial credit on exams. He definitely loves what he teaches! (this is coming from someone who absolutely hated physics in high school)
Relatively clear grading criteria and very fairly run course (the context being that Berkeley's physics curve, especially for pre-health majors, is total ass). Prof. Speliotopoulos's best attribute is EXTREMELY clear lecture explanations of concepts.
Spelio's lectures consist of derivations of equations with little to no application, however, his tests are fully application based. Throughout the semester, I realized that my learning from lectures was often flawed or incomplete, which was only resolved by taking a lot (almost all) of the practice tests to understand the application of concepts.
everyone giving good reviews here is lying!! he is so monotoned it is hard not to fall asleep during his lectures. his teaching style is hard to grasp and although he is a nice guy he is just not a good lecturer.
His tests are really not that hard (mostly because they are curved VERY generously). He's organized, and teaches you how to think like a physicist. Yes, there are proofs in class but he's clear about what is in scope. Exam problems were often directly from lectures, so pay attention and make sure you understand in-class examples well.
His lectures are exceptionally rigorous, methodical, and systematic, though they sometimes prioritize theory and derivations over practical examples. While homeworks are challenging and time-consuming, they prove rewarding. Tests are difficult, with mean scores hovering around 50%, but generously curved. I wholeheartedly recommend this professor.
A very solid choice for physics! 5A is a challenging course, but his lectures are comprehensive, rigorous, and clear. They really help you understand and appreciate the theoretical and mathematically rigorous nature of physics concepts.
Excellent professor!
Math heavy, zero original thoughts, abstract topics only without conveying the connection to real physics problems.
Really horrible teacher and class. I have him for 89 but I would not recommend him for any class. He seems to care about teaching but the reality is that he just can not teach. His homeworks are incredibly long and his tests contain unnecessary amounts of tedious regular algebra and calculus. Furthermore the tests do not match the homework. AVOID.
Ridiculous homeworks that take HOURS, so many typos on everything, bad exams with short time. 5A is concurrent with Math53 but he made everyone use linear algebra AND complex analysis on a homework, which even our Harvard-graduate GSI struggled with. At least curve was generous. He's not the worst but I didn't know what he was doing kinda ever
Be ready to be confused in lectures and to do ungodly amounts of homework that is do the Friday after your Tuesday midterm. Also sometimes he just doesn't answer questions in office hours just because. The worst professor I have ever had.
WAY too much HW. HW is due at 5 PM instead of midnight; even if you start at 6 AM you won't finish in 1 day. Deviated from textbook for ODEs and did an awful job. Midterm 2 was nothing like HW/lect. Doesn't just give you ODE and conditions for you to solve however you want. Some integrals on exams are ridiculously hard and algebra is long.
he is clearly quite an intelligent and snarky professor and seemingly respected. I took this class as a math 54 equivalent and i got whiplash from how confusing it seemed right off the bat. felt like i was in the wrong class, and sometimes i feel like he forgets what class he's teaching just bc of difficulty. lots of suffering but interesting topic
Very knowledgeable, but lectures primarily focused on derivations or tangents. Lots of tedious homework based on textbook. Exams not similar to textbook, lecture, or homework with no practice materials. Wording is also unclear. No clobber policy. Overall class isn't well-run, one of the worst professors for Physics 89.
Mr Speliotopoulos is a very intelligent man but cannot teach. His lectures were very confusing and completely unrelated to the exams. The homework was extremely long and difficult and often unrelated to his lectures. Wouldn't recommend it unless you are required to take it as a prerequisite.
Condescending, bad at lecturing, and statistically has lower grades than other professors for the same classes -Lectures were too fast and impossible to follow -Homework was long and covered irrelevant content outside the scope of the exams -He assumes you weren't paying attention and sometimes won't help if you ask questions in discussion
Hard class with diabolical homework assignments. The grade was a bit inflated because of how many kids took the material beforehand but the material itself is not that bad. Tests were pretty fair. Overall though, this class probably made me a smarter person but definitely did not need to take so much time.
Very helpful, gives plenty of advice on how to improve lab setup.
Great! Super helpful
Overall a very solid professor, tho can be quite difficult.
Very nice dude. Approachable and helpful.
Seems intimidating at first but he's actually very kind and helpful. Somewhat harshly graded, I know basically no one that got 100% on a lab after the first unit, but the GSI grades not him so just beware.
Lectures were lines and lines of math with little explanation. Essentially have to learn everything from the textbook, and even then, that did not help much with the exams. Not a very well-run course in general.
He is very old school, writes with chalk on the board and doesn't answer half the questions because you will "hold him to it". Many exam-related questions are often responded with "Im not going to answer that question". There is a big discrepancy between the lectures, hw, and the exam.
He makes concepts unnecessarily hard. Besides having a big discrepancy between the exam, the lecture, and the homework, he doesn't clarify the things you need for the exam. He is old school and uses chalk to teach, and is often unresponsive to questions or accommodations
Lectures are disorganized and unclear. I didn't get the impression he enjoys teaching very much. Avoid if possible.
I do not understand how this lecturer is still hired. He can not explain concepts well and sometimes confuses himself during lecture. A high school teacher can explain and teach everything better. The tests are not difficult, but it is hard to prep for them when the concepts do not make sense. The only good quality is he always answers questions.
Pretty helpful throughout the lab process if you ask questions. Class seemed like it was graded fairly. Time consuming but chill class.
Prof. Spelio is caring and very accessible and helpful outside of class (GO TO OHs!!) However, his teaching style is very old school and he cannot explain concepts clearly so you are forced to teach yourself a lot. Exam averages are LOW, weekly homework, and labs cover material weeks ahead but you'll get 100% on those. DO NOT FALL BEHIND
Not helpful and lowkey rude to students
