hes great
He's a really good professor, explains concepts very well, his lectures are extremely helful and his tests actually resemble his homework problems. He doesn't grade the homework, but the questions on his 4 quizzes are taken word-for-word from the hw! OH and he's funnyy tooo! but in an awkward way lol..take him!!
A really good professor, explains all the concepts thoroughly. It is not tough to get an A if you do all the homework. Homework is from the textbook and quizzes are based on it.
Explains calculus in an interactive manner and always makes jokes to keep the class engaged.
BEST TEACHER EVER! i seriously hated calculus since i failed the a test in high school but taking this class made me understand everything so well. he is super clear and funny and explains everything thoroughly. his quizzes are easy As since they are straight from the homework in which he gives you the answers and work to the night before
awesome teacher! i was really worried this teacher wasnt going to be good since he had no ratings since he was new but after the first day of class i was relieved and really glad i took this class. super easy A and he's funny and entertaining and i never lost interest in his lectures. he is also head of the math 20 dept. definitely take him!!!
A very clear and well prepared teacher. Tried his hardest to make class interesting by telling jokes and gave ample opportunity for students to ask for help. Dropped lowest midterm if it helped your grade at the end of the quarter and administered easy quizzes to boost everyone's grade. Prof. Bowers really cares about his students and his class.
Best math professor ever. Quizzes are word-word from homework. Midterms and final resemble homework problems. Funny in his own way to keep lectures interesting. Explains concepts thoroughly and helps no matter what! Strongly recommend this professor for math. He actually TEACHES!
BEST math professor ever! Bowers explains concepts briefly to the max. Understood everything, and it's basically Calc AB all over again.
Prof. Bowers was an entertaining lecturer. Sure his jokes are corny but it was probably the only class this quarter where I stayed awake. If you are on top of homework and/or had AP Calc in highschool, this class should be fairly easy.
Great teacher, explains stuff very well. Quizzes are very straight forward and easy. I felt the midterms and the final were reflective of what he taught. Nothing real tricky on the exams. Recommended
Great professor. He is entertaining, and is a very clear and approachable professor. A must take at UCSD.
Bowers is very clear and teaches well using many examples. He is a bit boring for me (or maybe it's just winter quarter) but overall he is a great teacher and is very helpful, especially during office hours. He prepares you well for the final!
His class is filled with his "jokes" which keep us awake at 8am...really nice professor, i took his 20a and 20c
One of the best professors of the math department. His lectures are very clear and concise, not to mention that he makes geeky jokes during lecture, which make going to lecture fun. Homework and midterm were straightforward, just study the solutions he posts on Piazza. If you need extra help, definitely go to office hours; his TAs are the best!
By far, THE best math professor at UCSD. I was a bit worried at first because the last math class I took was about 3 years ago, so I had forgotten almost everything, but he explains things sooo clearly that it's impossible not to do well if you give an honest effort. Go to class and take good notes, guaranteed A. Definitely recommended! :-)
Bowers is an awesome math professor. I highly recommend taking him. He is clear, concise, and excellent and his jokes are actually very funny. Highly recommend.
Best teacher I've ever had at UCSD. Very clear, intelligent, and straightforward. Quizzes, midterms, and final came straight from homework and examples we did in lecture. Tries to make lecture more interesting with nerdy jokes. Highly recommend!
Bowers is awesome. He really made class fun to attend. His exams are straightforward. Just be wary of tangents. They've been on all the exams so far, but he's an awesome guy!
Bowers answers all questions and explains material much more clearly than the TA. The midterms are much more difficult than the homework and practice midterms, mostly because you lose points for simple errors. Just be careful, check your work, & ask for help. You can drop one midterm and your final will count as a greater portion of your grade.
This is the math teacher you want during your time at UCSD. He obviously enjoys teaching, explains the materials very nicely, and he is very funny with his cheesy jokes/ comments. I have enjoyed this class a lot, and I looked forward to going to his lectures. For those of you who decide to take Professor Bowers, you will never regret doing so.
His class is very interesting but his examples are not very useful when doing homework. His midterms are not reflective of the homework. I took his class from all of these review and honestly, it is a hard class. If you are planning to take 20b, take it with an easier teacher and your midterms and finals are easier. His jokes in class are LAME!!!!
Bowers is the absolute best math teacher I've ever had. He is very clear and straightfoward, and he makes class extremely enjoyable with all his little jokes. Seriously, I don't understand how people complain the class is hard. The work is really reasonable, only a couple problems a week. And the TA Zhehua is AMAZING.
Awesome math professor, take him if you can. His midterms and final were very reflective of the harder hw problems and the practice tests he had on his website. He answers emails very quick and from what I know his office hours are helpful. If you do the hw right and actually understand it, and show up to class and put in effort then you'll do well
Professor Bowers is the best math teacher I have ever had. He explains the material in a way that is easy to understand, and the exams are always similar to the notes and homework problems. He also makes corny little math jokes in class that make lecture fun and enjoyable. Recommended him to all my friends that needed to take Math 20B next quarter.
This is the best math professor ever! It doesn't matter what class you need, TAKE HIM. You will never regret it! He is so nice and will answer all questions! And he has a sense of humor! Always a plus!
Professor Bowers is by far the most clear and fair math teacher i have ever had. His explanations are very easy to understand and he always refers back to the main point. I highly recommend him for anyone taking math at UCSD as he is a remarkable teacher. He also makes math jokes during lecture which keeps the class engaged and interested.
Great professor for Math 20B! Super Clear!
He's entertaining and he is a MUST TAKE! :D
Bowers is the best professor in the math department!!! He has the mind as sharp as a tack, and is able to explain concepts crystal clear to his students. And he's funny in a quirky way. He can do stand up comedy if he weren't a professor.
Best professor I have had thus far. Makes math very clear. He is really helpful in office hours as well. His exams represent the hw and practice midterms. He does not try to trick you. I recommend him without hesitation. TAKE HIM!!!!!
He makes you fall in love with math.
Literally the best math professor at ucsd.
He's a fantastic professor. He's fabulous at math and has a very, very thorough understanding of the subject material. However, unlike most, he's able to explain his knowledge well enough to afford it to others. That's an invaluable skill. He's not an easy professor; he's a GOOD professor. Take him if you can... you won't regret it.
DOC BOWERS! Best math professor ever! He is very clear and organized during lecture and he also makes dorky jokes :D Exams are fair. Do homework and practice. He lets you use one handwritten page of notes for exams. Getting an A is very possible :)
Without a doubt the best professor I've had at UCSD. He loves math and does a FANTASTIC job of teaching it. He's patient and answers all questions. And his jokes are cute in a dorky way. Relatively easy exams too. So if you get a chance to sign up for his class, take the spot immediately and consider yourself lucky!
Bowers is an amazing professor. Try your hardest to get him as your prof for any course. He explains the subject very well and will do extra examples just so one person will understand. He's organized, neat, and well-spoken. As long as you make sure to do the work, it's a good ride. Truly, one of the best!
I took this class during the summer session which was very accelerated (5 Weeks.) Even so, Prof. Bower's clear and very well organized lectures made the material comprehensible. His teaching style is very relaxed and personable. His exams were absolutely reasonable, and TA's were also very knowledgeable and approachable. Highly recommend!
Take him. There is literally not a better math professor at this school. Makes things super easy to understand, and his passion for math and teaching really comes through. Went to section once. Just do the homework, and extra practice. Gave e.c. for evaluations at the end. I would take any of the math courses he's teaching.
TAKE HIM. He is the best math prof. at UCSD. He makes calculus so easy and clear. The exams are straightforward. He even incorporates subtle humor into his lectures. Some people say he's boring, but they aren't paying attention to his chalk humor. Seriously, the best. He made me like math.
Easily one of the best math teachers I've ever had--wish I could take him for the rest! Made a very difficult subject accessible. Tests and HW are fair, just don't miss lectures. A very nice guy, and pretty funny. Take him, definitely.
Bowers is amazing. His lectures are 100% clear and he teaches you how to solve problems methodically. The WileyPlus assignments were unfortunate but it was the first time he used it.
Bowers is a really funny guy and a great math professor. Attending lectures is a must since he doesn't podcast and the online homework isn't the best. Only went to section two times. The final is hard if you haven't been keeping up during the quarter
Bowers is an amazing professor. This class was by far the best experience I have ever had with math. He is funny and great at explaining difficult concepts. There are two midterms, online hw assignments, and a cumulative final. The class is difficult, but worth it. If you don't like math take Bowers, you will not regret it!!
Bowers is the best math professor! He is funny and great at explaining difficult concepts. Take him even if you do not like math, you will not regret it! By far the best experience I have ever had with a math class.
Very clear lecturer, and expectations were very clear. Do all of the assigned HW problems and understand all of the concepts in lecture. The exams were fair as well. Very good class!!
Great teacher and funny! He is very good at explaining. NO CURVE AND NO EXTRA CREDIT! Exams are easy and from the lectures. The only thing was that his final exam was way harder than expected. OTHERWISE, GREAT PROFESSOR!
Bowers is an amazing professor. I actually enjoyed attending his lectures and understood him perfectly. His midterms were striaghtforward and easy if you do the homework. Final was harder than predicted, however. Discussions are pretty useless, I only attended about 2 or 3 times the entire quarter! Very easy class and amazing professor.
Seriously the BEST math professor I've ever had. So easy to understand him, and his examples are very useful. He's an overall really nice and approachable guy! I recommend taking his class 100%. If you have the option of taking his class, TAKE IT!
Makes jokes on a regular basis. Is very thorough especially when asked a question. I liked him.
I never have had a 'best' teacher in my whole life but I can honestly say that he is. The midterms in this class were slightly harder than 10A but still doable. He explains everything with clarity and actually answers questions when they are asked by relating it to the material on the board.
Bowers is a good professor, but if you are taking this class do not expect it to be easy! Every test there are some problems that are really hard, like you have no clue how to do.
He's seriously the BEST professor I've had so far. He is so clear when teaching concepts. Honestly, he makes math fun, which is crazy, but he's that awesome. He's like a math wizard. He's so down to earth and super nice. I got an A in his class because I attended lecture everyday and actually focused. Discussion is unnecessary, in my opinion.
Probably the most clear and thorough professor I have ever had! Lectures very slowly and covers everything in tons of detail. He's also super nice and is a master of cheesy jokes. Tests can be challenging but are fair, you should definitely go to lecture since there are no power points or podcasts. Enroll fast bc his classes fill up quickly!
Can't say anything that others haven't said before. Super informative and clear cut teacher. The tests were lcourse based (all 3 math 10C teachers used 1 test), so it wasn't solely up to his discretion, but tests were still fair. Class is not easy, but as far as the teacher goes, best math teacher at UCSD hands down.
Had him winter 2013. If you are required to take math with absolutely no interest in it, this professor will make you wonder why you aren't majoring in it. Bowers makes math sound like it tells a story. Take him and prepare to have an entertaining quarter.
Hands down, he is the BEST professor in UCSD!!! He is super clear, and makes lecture fun and enjoyable with his awesome jokes. Love him!
he is amazing
He is sooooo cute!! OMG I really enjoy his class. Clear and straightforward. No massive homework, just one midterm one final and 3 quizzes. However, math itself is hard enough ; Really like him.
He is very good math teacher. You will learn and enjoy. Nerdy funny. Do your homework and go to discussion. Then you will get A. Love to take him again. Very responsive under chat room to help out students.
Great professor. Explains topics clearly. Take him if you can. His test usually contain one question that require you to think outside of the box, but other than that they aren't bad.
Cute and good professor. Lectures are interesting and easy to understand!
This is how you get an A in Math 20C: 1) Go to Ali's review sections (even when he is not your TA). He is one of the best TAs that you will have in your entire life. 2) Put previous exam problems on your cheat sheet. Anyways Dr. Bowers is an awesome Math teacher and lecturer. Hes super funny (nerd humor) and will help you enjoy Math
Go to class and take good notes. He is a good professor. His midterms and final is quite straight forward. Do your homework and go to discussion section (especially Ali's). You will get a good grade.
Prof Bowers is a very good professor. He is funny and he explains very well. His classes and discussions are not madatory and there are no quizzes. The exams are also not very difficult.
Bowers is a great teacher! His lectures are clear and he can really explain the concepts well. He is one of the best math teachers I have had and the best calculus teacher I have had. The tests are like the homework and the previous tests. I had Ali who is the greatest TA ever but no matter who your TA is go to the discussions and the reviews.
One of the best math teachers at UCSD, I did poorly in class but that was because I have a part-time job. So easy to get an A.
Bowers is the best math teacher I've ever had. He's very thorough in his explanations and I love his little jokes. His grading criteria is very straightforward. Attend lectures and do the homework. Exams are fair, with some difficult questions. His class fills super fast and there's always a huge waitlist so get this class first pass if you can.
Amazing teacher and lectures! Best math teacher I've ever had. His lectures are clear and funny so I really enjoy going to his class! If you do the homework carefully, the exams will be easy to deal with.
Super easy tests ! Gives you clearl tests based on homework ! TAs are very helpful ! Would take him again in a heartbeat
Great professor. Truly inspirational!
One of the few teachers that made me enjoy math!
Professor Bowers is an amazing lecturer with neat handwriting and clear steps to problems. He explains concepts, problems and the overall picture precisely. In addition, he has a great sense of humor and is approachable during office hours. However, his tests are challenging which means you have to work for an A. So far, best math teacher ever.
Prof bowers is math jesus.
Bowers is one of my favorite professor. He explains material very clearly and in great detail. His test is not hard as long as you go over his homework and practice exams. I recommend you to go to his office hour, you will find out more about his personality which is awesome. If I have more math classes to take, I will definitely choose him.
BEST TEACHER IN MATH DEPARTMENT! I have had Bowers twice now once for 20c and now for 163. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. Knows his stuff and actually CARES about his students (rare find at ucsd). Recommend him and this class 100%
His notes make everything clear.
Great teacher with amazing crystal clear lectures. However, expect the tests to be hard as hell. Do well on the 2 midterms so that the difficult final does not account for 60% of your grade. If you attend class everyday and do the homework, its an easy B+ or A.
Math was generally hard for me so I was thankful I had bowers for Math 20 ABC to help me understand and survive. I did not get A's, but I did as well as I needed to. He is definitely the best professor for those courses, I even crashed his lectures because I could not get into his class for B and C. He makes funny jokes too overall great professor!
Even though mistakes on tests can be unforgiving (it's the math department, what do you expect?), Bowers is absolutely the best choice for a professor. Clear notes and explanations, answers questions fully and clearly, and he cares for his students. His corny jokes keep the class awake and he has everybody's utmost respect. Best Math teacher ever.
Bowers gives amazing lectures! Even though I knew most of the material already from AP calc AB, he gives further explanation and really explains everything well. He is very fair with grading tests and offers clear help when you ask for it. He is also VERY easy to follow in lecture and his humor is hilarious. I would take him for every math class!!
I love Bowers and his bowtie. His lectures are amazing and he teaches like a monster. God bless this man and his contributions to this school. Take this professor even if he has 8am classes because they will be definitely worth it. Someone give this man a medal or a trophy.
Very good lecturer. He takes his time and goes slow to make sure you really understand the material. Tests are not to difficult as there are practice midterms. I'm not a math guy, but I really enjoyed his lectures. He's also low key funny. I highly recommend taking him.
I LOVE BOWERS!
One word: amazing
Best professor at UCSD. If you have a chance to take him, do so
Prof Bowers made the class easy to follow and will always stop after each problem to ask to see if we have any questions. He's really nice and always cracks math jokes in class to bring up the mood. Homework isn't too bad since it's online and you can ask your TA. Tests are based on homework problems, which is manageable. Overall, 10/10 recommend!!
Bowers is adorable & he clearly loves his subject. He's super neat so its easy to take notes in class & he explains everything very well. He'd randomly crack jokes so for a math class I found it more entertaining than what I expected. Do hw & book problems & you'll find that the tests are a breeze.
He is the best professor at UCSD. Period. Even if you're not a math person, take his class. You will not regret it. Highly recommend. 10/10.
Professor Bowers is my favorite; he is not only a great professor who knows the material and can teach it very well, he puts so much effort into responding to all of the student's lectures. He is also very kind and genuine.
Bowers is a great professor. He presents the material in depth and very clearly. Definitely use office hours; I only went twice and regret not going more. If you actually do the homework and understand the homework, the class shouldn't be too challenging.
Bowers' lectures are very helpful for understanding the material. His exams are very challenging and are harder than his sample exams he posts. Overall, Professor Bowers is a fantastic professor and I definitely recommend taking him for Math 20A, B, and C.
He's really funny and his lectures are clear. He explain things in more than one way so it really makes sense. There's homework online and that's about it other than the midterms and final.
Very Good Professor! The best professor I have ever seen!
Great professor. He uses a lot of examples during lecture after teaching new sections so if you're like me and need to see how lessons can be applied to actual problems before doing them on your own I would recommend his class. Homework is due every week but it only helps you prepare for exams even more.
Great professor. I really appreciate his help.
He is by far one of the best professors out there, the only one flaw he has is that he prepares you for the exam by giving you previous exams from past quarters, but then throws things into his own exams that he didn't teach. So be prepared and know you stuff coming onto every exam and come to every lecture. His office hours are also very helpful.
If you have the chance to take Professor Bowers's class, DO IT. I am so grateful he was one of my first college professors. His teaching is clear, interesting, and very applicable to the tests. He has a very friendly demeanor, so I always went to his office hours. I still go to his OH for MATH 20B even though I was not in his class anymore.
Nice, solid professor. Teaches you everything you need to know. I had already taken AP Calc BC before so I didn't really learn anything new - but he was great with help. I was pretty lazy with the class so I didn't get a good grade but you can easily get an B and even an A if you've taken BC before. Definitely would recommend him.
Bowers made 20B concepts super clear! His lectures were very helpful and to the point, and I enjoyed going to his class. By far my favorite professor at UCSD thus far. Would highly recommend taking him over the other 20B professors (as I've heard negative things about the other professors). Bowers is the best!
Absolute worst math professor I've had at UCSD. Uses tons of examples in his lectures, when exams are based on concepts. Tons of work is expected, whether its written, online and lab assignments. I spend more hours in this math class alone, than I do in organic chemistry. This class is ridiculous, and his teaching style does not help AT ALL.
This professor is a very wise, smart cookie who has very little crumbles in his class lectures. He was very approachable and friendly throughout the quarter. His humor makes the class interesting and fun while still holds your attention. As long as you do the assignments and study properly, this professor will become one of your favorites.
He's a great professor, but the class is harder than it needs to be. Tests are very concept based, and don't really relate to the hw and lab assignments too much. This class is also a lot of work. It's a 5 unit class, but it has the workload of a 6 unit class. Only take this class if you have time on your hands.
I think Professor Bowers is a good professor; however, I think he tries a little too much to make MATH163 difficult. He gives us little to no instruction on how to study for the exams. You learn tho that in order to do well on his tests, you have to COMPLETELY know the homework, lecture notes and parts of the discussion projects.
Bowers is thorough in every single lecture. His class helped me understand math more in depth than I had before. He's truly one of the greatest professors at UCSD. Material isn't too difficult and grading is fair.
He is one of the best math professors for 20 series...
He is the best professor in Math department and is my favorite professor in this school. Definitely take his course!
Funny, engaging, and very intelligent professor. He answers every question, knows when to tell jokes, and explains content with lots of examples and repetitions.
Yo I don't even need to say much. Can't describe in words besides "if professor Judy Kim was the worst, HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR IN THE UNIVERSE". Wow, he's such a nice person, he posts all his lecture notes in the website. His notes very understandable. He has that skill to summarize all the complicated math concepts in textbook in his own words concisely so that students get easy time understanding the whole concepts. Exams? Don't worry. As long as you know the basic concepts, you'll pass. Oh no, I mean, YOU WILL get A+. I always feel so bad that I pay so much tuition to go to this school, but whenever I take class with this professor, baby it's WORTH IT!
Literally best professor at UCSD. Take his class even if it's 8 am. Totally worth it. Even if I didn't get enrolled in his 20B and 20D I went to his class. Lectures are clear with examples that resemble questions on the exam. Answers every question you ask. To be honest, he is the first math professor that actually made me interested in math.
he is the best but the final was too dificult
Professor Bowers is the one professor I was willing to wake up for at 8 am. He has the most clear lectures and is more than willing to explain something in depth - no matter how stupid it might feel. The 1st midterm was hard and the average was a D, but the 2nd and the final make up for it. If you get a chance, take him for every Math 20 series!
Bowers' lectures were very clear; for the most part, he writes what he says (which is delivered in very clearly and concisely). He also shows many examples, which was incredibly helpful, for both homework and tests. Responsive to students' questions. Time is well managed. Lectures are DEFINITELY worth it. Optional book problems also VERY helpful.
Best Professor ever!
Bowers is definitely my fav math professor, he is super cute and his lecture and notes are clear and easy to understand. He always post his notes online, so dont worry if you missed tow or three lectures. Online homework and discussion board are super helpful..
Bowers gives good lectures, posts incredibly careful and legible notes and has fair tests. There's nothing more to ask for.
The tests are straightforward and the lectures are fun to attend. Dr. Bowers is a very charismatic lecturer! I never felt the need to go to his office hours, but I really wish I did, because he seems like a cool guy. Definitely take him if you can.
Bowers' like the boss in the math department and everyone wants to get in to his class. He's a nice person but I actually do not pay attention in his lectures cuz it can sometimes be too tedious and boring. However his exams are easy.
Prof Bowers is great! His 20B lecture is straightforward and notes are clear. But besides lecture, additional work is needed if you want to get perfect score-only reviewing lec notes is not enough. Somebody complained about his harsh grading, but I found his points deduction is pretty lenient. Personally recommend SI sessions!
He is an awesome lecturer! I think I would take all MATH 20 sequence with him. But beware of his tests, they are so hard. The average for my midterm is 53, and for final is 60, imagine that.
Bower's lecture notes are very clear and easy to understand. You don't have to worry if you miss lecture because he posts everything he wrote in lecture online. However his notes don't offer much example problems, but more focused on concepts. His test are fair, not easy. He can test you on a variety of things so be sure to know your concepts well.
His lecture notes in my opinion were kind of hard to understand but listening to him in lecture helped a lot with understanding the notes. He doesn't podcast but thankfully he puts his lectures at a decent time. Study all his homework word for word and you can pull off an A. Go to office hours. He is very caring and a great teacher.
I liked his lectures, he's so fun and explains his math really well. His 20C exams were significantly easier than those in 20B (yes I took both with him) and if you go to lectures, do your homework, and study with effort, you are gonna pass.
Super clear lecture, materiel is easy as long as you keep on track. Since it's easy, the average in class is high. You can't mess up anything in order to get A. Weekly HW. Need to do the lab things which is a little confusing sometimes. Kinda a lot of things to do, but nothing hard just takes time. 2 midterms 1 final. Do HW, study notes. Easy A
Took the first midterm and I thought that I must have been dumb since it was so hard. Found out that the average on the test was just over 50%. 50% average with no curve basically means certain death. The second midterm was not much easier. Mr. Bowers may look nice but he has no mercy. May God have mercy on your soul if you take this class.
Bowers does not care for your well being at all. I've never been so destroyed by any class in my life. I look around at the faces of the students around me and I can see we are all under a common suffering that bonds us. If there is punishment in the afterlife, it is taking this class for eternity. The midterms hurt more than a broken heart.
Bowers has easy lectures, but his actual exams and homework are much harder than his lecture content. This is because he explains the bare minimum of each concept in class and expects us to show full concept mastery at a high level on the test. Like training kids to walk a 12 minute mile and then making them run a marathon for the final.
The examples he uses in his lectures are like 1+12. However, when it was time to do the homework or the exam, it was totally different than what was expected. I thought I was the only one struggling in the class, but I noticed others around me were too. "We're all in this together..." 50% average for passing on midterms and no curve...
MATH20B is no joke. It is absolutely hard and the time in lecture is so limited. Bowers made full use of it every single time, though. He is well prepared for lectures and lectures are really amazing. Sometimes he tells hilarious small jokes. Planning to take his 20C again, if I could get enrolled because he is so popular and the waitlist is long.
Lectures are super clear and easily understandable, but the homework and miterms/final are much harder. Practicing problems out of the book wont help much because the problems on the exams are harder. Even if you feel like you know the material you might get blindsided on the exam.
Pretty much summed up by the previous comments. He is a very tough grader, his lectures teach the basics, and he is very engaging. I pretty much failed both midterms but still ended with a B+. I felt like his exams were very fair (similar to difficult homework problems), it's just that the time constraints make it very easy to make silly errors.
Awesome professor.
Bowers is great. Do the homework and study and you'll get the A. I recopied his lecture notes to study and was never surprised on tests. The only reason I got an A- was because I got F's on all the Matlab assignments, I had no idea how to figure that garbage out, and it's 8% of your grade.
doc bowers wears a bowtie on fridays so thats really chill, but my mans midterms and finals are REAL hard. like i understand most of everything but my mans got like my fbi agent to tell him what i dont know and he puts its on the test. theres like at least 1 or 2 questions on the final that will make EVERYONE stay until the end. great lecturer tho
Bowers is an amazing lecturer and does a fantastic job at conveying concepts and making sure his students know the material at a more complex level. Despite this, the only real flaw that exists in his class was that the exams were so ridiculously hard and time consuming. There are always curveball questions that make you reevaluate you life choices
Overall a great professor. He is thorough in what he teaches, and explains concepts he presents. If you know the material well it may get a little boring, however him going through step by step almost guarantees you will understand the concept. His note-taking makes it so that you dont feel in a rush to take notes. And he answers questionsverywell
Took Bowers for 20 B and C and both were insanely tough. 20B was Calculus BC (If you did it in HS) and honestly I think that background knowledge is the only reason for my grade. I got a 75% for both B and C but my grades were B- and C. There was a curve for B but not C :( Study the homework and past tests, not the notes, they don't really help!
Take his class. One of the few math professors here who really cares about teaching. You can tell from the fluency of his lectures that he thoroughly prepares to teach each lecture. The notes he posts after each lecture are well-organized and legible.
He is one of my favorite professors I've ever had in UCSD. His midterms are pretty hard, and you have to really understand the materials well to be able to do well on his tests. His lecture is so detailed and you can tell that he prepares his lecture beforehand. Overall he is hilarious and a great prof!
Ol' doc Bowers is a great math professor. His lectures are always straightfoward and easy to understand and his exams are never too difficult. Discussions are optional and I rarely attended. Lectures are not necessary to go to as he posts the lecture notes. Would take him again for sure
He's an awesome professor who comes to class prepared, posts his lecture slides and makes sure students understand the materials. Attendance isn't mandatory but you understand the materials more if you went to lecture because some deeper explanation are verbally stated which is not uploaded as a podcast. HIs midterms and finals are hard.
Final was toooooooo hard
Excellent professor, however, his class is very challenging so be prepared for very difficult tests especially the final.
Final is very hard
Experienced, caring, non arrogant, and willing to help all kinds of students at different levels. Had him for math 20B, but my Prof. Sucked for Math 20C, and sure enough, Bowers helped me tremendously during his office hours for another math class!
If you get the chance, don't think twice before taking him! He is VERY good at teaching, gives a lot of examples and clearly cares about his job. He is very helpful during OHs and posts all the content from lecture online. There was a lot of trig on the tests, don't easily give up on a question, it might be easier than it seems. Final was scaled
There are 2 separate homework. Lectures are prepared beforehand. The level of difficulty of midterms increases and final is the extreme. He doesn't curve. Lectures are not mandatory but he explains well so it's better to attend. Uploads his lecture on Ted. Discussions aren't mandatory.
Bowers is a good professor when it comes to teaching the materals and answering any questions. Midterms and Final are slightly more on the challengeing side, but doable if you work hard enough.
He lectures pretty slowly, which isn't a bad thing compared to other profs in the math department. As long as you do the homework, attend discussion if you need extra practice or help, and did the textbook problems, I'd say the class wasn't hard.
Always go to lecture, he gives great details on problems and he's funny.
His lectures were really fast, he tried to teach a lot of content in 50 min. Homework was due on webassign, where you would have to solve a lot of problems and most of them were difficult. Test were difficult
Definitely knows what he's talking about, but his lectures were too conceptual rather than teaching you how to actually solve the problems, so when you get to the hw you don't actually know how to solve anything. Exams were much harder than class examples, but if you study properly then you'll be fine. Would still choose hi over other math profs
Prof. Bowers gives good lectures and puts all the lecture slides/examples online so you don't have to go if you don't want to. Webassign homework could be hard but prepared you pretty well. The first midterm was brutal, but the final exam and the grading system saved my grade.
He's a real nice guy and honestly kind of adorable. He's really good at explaining concepts and answering questions. The tests, however, can be difficult. There's almost always some kind of curveball (ex. knowing a certain identity/property to solve a question). Also, your grade is pretty much entirely dependent upon your tests.
I took Dr. Bowers for 10A, and sequentially 10B. He has immaculate notes, explains concepts well (as well as some math history and math puns), and has fair tests. Only con - be aware that practice exams are not representative of the actual exams, but the actual exams are still doable and fair.
5 out of 5 even though I got a NP in his class. Bowers is really good at explaining things, and always patient / friendly / hilarious when interacting with students. Midterms are easy and overall representative of homework, but finals require some extra thinking. Wish I went to more of his lectures. Again definitely recommend even though I failed.
Whatever you do, do not take this during the summer. But if you must, plan to have no life and make math your life. Bowers is funny, smart and surprisingly fair. His midterm and final were very fair in terms of what is expected for you to know. But there is A LOT OF WORK involved in this course. He doesn't curve.
Bowers was a great professor. The quizzes consist of two problems taken from the homework. DO NOT waste time doing the practice final and midterm. The midterm and final were representative of the homework, but the final had problems where you had to think a little harder which is where the lectures came in handy.
Took Him over the Summer. 10A consist of weekly quizzes. Each quiz is two questions taken directly from the homework. So do the Homework. Midterm and Final are fair the questions also come from the Homework. HE DOES NOT CURVE! so over half the class failed. No podcasts or slides everything is written on the board.
Took him for 10B over the summer.(also took him for 10A over the summer). Extremely fast paced class. 2 midterms and a Final. Questions come from the Homework. Discussions are mandatory. Don't waste your time in the practice exams that he post they are not nothing like what you will see. He doesn't podcast or have slides so going to class is must
Bowers DOES NOT CURVE. I got above average for both midterms and got a little below average for the final and still didn't pass the class.
I went to only went to 2 of his lectures which I'm not proud of. I recommend you go to his lectures if you actually want to learn. I'll admit my overall grade was an F after my second midterm and I didn't think I'd pass but he did have a policy where he would replace one midterm with your final grade. Saved my life but don't depend on that policy.
Lectures were all uploaded online, lecture not mandatory. Tests were very straight forward and covers the main topics lectured in class, no secret hard questions to catch you off guard. MATLAB and HW are the only two other things in grades besides tests. HW every week and MATLAB was about every other week
I've never been good at math - and my experience in MATH 18 and 20C with other professors had been awful. Bowers makes good use of technologies available and projects his iPad to the big screen, making it super easy to take notes. He posts his lecture notes online, which are so clear and neat that computer can recognize what he wrote.
Same as another student I had unhappy math experience in my Math 20C and 18 courses, but Prof Adam's 20D really made myself confident in math agagin. Course notes were posted and they were super clear as well as easy to catch the point. Homeworks took time but really help to understand the material. Exams were REALLY fair. Easy A in general.
Lectures are very relaxed (almost too slow/boring if you're familiar with the topic).
Professor Bowers could teach calculus to a kindergartner, he makes everything super clear and all the examples in class are very representative fo the homework and tests.
Professor forgets people aren't on his level when it comes to knowledge of calculus. His exams and gradescope homeworks were harder than expected. Doesn't curve, round up, or provide extra credit. Difficulty might've had to do with remote learning but still wouldn't recommend.
I hate this man. He is the worst professor I ever had. He gives way too much homework and cares too much about his ego than his students learning. Save yourself the trouble and never take him. He is an ineffective teacher that has no idea what a student needs or pedagogy. Awful man. Life ruiner. Taking his class is a waste of time. (:
Not helpful. Forgets that students don't know calculus. Looks down on students and can be condescending. Honestly, idk how he got those other reviews bc he is literally the worst. Don't take his class. His homework is unnecessaril difficult and his exams don't reflect what he teaches. He is incredibly dull. Do yourself a favor and take another prof
Terrible teacher 10/10 would not recommend
One of the worst professors there is at UCSD. Uncaring and egoistic, does not care about student conditions, situations or anything except for himself and his stupid rules. Unfairly hard tests, useless extra HW that he does not even grade and harsh grading systems. He became a professor only to give students a hard time.
AVOID taking MATH142A with him. It will be an absolute pain. Basically, he doesn't care at all about students' learning. Very harsh grading system. Doesn't care to explain thoroughly and reads directly from his lecture slides. He might as well just post those for us to look at. HW problems are long and useless and won't help prepare you for exams.
Prof Bowers is LEGIT. I swear he breaks down concepts very easy for you when you attend lecture and his exams are very fair as they relate to his lectures!!! Last math class that I took at UC San Diego and it was my favorite.
I had Professor Adam Bowers in Spring 2020. I thought he was an amazing, nice, and kind professor. He also has a nice sense of humor and easy to talk to about Math history. His assignments were overall easy to complete. One essay on a subject with math history; one midterm and one final where they are short essay questions. Easy class overall!
His video lectures and notes were taken directly from the pretty mediocre textbook (Applied PDE's by Logan) and he basically just read from his notes. He had us do canvas quizzes that were kind of confusing, but gave us "re-quizzes" to make up some points. Final was part written and part quiz, where the quiz is just a copy-paste of past quizzes.
I don't think anyone else's lecture can be this unclear. Do yourselves a huge favor and don't take any math class with him. He expects a lot from you and the problems that you find on homework, quizzes and exams are nothing like what he teaches. Basically, it's hard to succeed in his class. Any other prof could do better. Do not take.
Not understanding of conditions of remote learning, doesnt care about students
Don't trust review here; you will regret that his exams are not like what he teaches. He gave us a lot of practice exams and ended up with a completely different exam from Mars. His homework and practice exams are useless, and they can't prepare anything for your exam. My class average GPA was 1.21, and you know how ridiculous his class was.
he gives lots of hw and practice exams but they don't help with the midterms. midterms don't reflect what he teaches - much harder than hw/practice. tough grader - doesn't curve the quizzes but gives little cushion to the exams
Syllabus follows other course prof, 5 of 7 quizzes are counted for grade and 2 of 3 midterms & final are counted never once met with prof bc lectures are all pre-recorded. Only held office hours 2 times a week which sucked. Practice exams didn't reflect the actual exams BUT EXAMS ARE CURVED! He has his own notes that are downloadable which is nice.
Dr. Bowers is clearly great at calculus, but he sucks at teaching. He forgets that students haven't been introduced to these concepts before. While the mandatory homework isn't the worst, the exam/quiz questions are entirely conceptual, so no amount of practice problems can prepare you for them. He's more focused on catching cheaters than teaching.
I really cant give a teacher great reviews when the class average for the tests and quizzes were failing. Pretty ridiculous in my opinion. You will probably end up doing fine because of the curve, but I cannot really say I got better at math in this class. Also, I want to echo the sentiment that the tests were from mars.
It's almost like he doesn't want us to pass. His quizzes were mainly conceptual questions based on niche information scattered throughout lectures. He's very confusing at times and teaches like all his students should be familiar with the concepts. Takes best 7 scores from 10 quizzes/ best 2 of 3 midterms yet this is about all I liked of his class.
Kinda ridiculous how hard this class was. I'm taking it in the summer In the content of the exams, there are a few questions that aren't even part of the chapter- its for next chapter! Majority of the questions on the quizzes/exams are true or false questions he barely goes over. So many examples in lecture videos just to not show up in exams???
People said that he was easy to understand in lecture, but that's because he barely covers anything for the homework. I'd stop attending lecture. I only liked his homework site to teach myself. Test questions can be the most advanced ones possible. There are very few questions, so you have to hope that you know how to even get started.
Professor was nice enough, but hated how conceptual his quizzes were when exams were more computation based. He answers questions like he's a philosophy or English professor, i.e. "what do YOU think," like I don't know what to think, that's why I'm asking you. Prerecorded lectures, so his lecture times were basically office hours.
Unsympathetic to student concerns. The good thing is he gives some lectures going over questions related to the class. He is also available on piazza.
No offense but bad teacher. His lectures and homework did not correlate to the exams.
Quizzes are all conceptual and theory-based (trick questions/overcomplicated wording too), most of which are not covered in class. When I asked for help, he told me to read the textbook. Exam questions can be significantly more complicated than the practice you get on homework, so hope you have a good understanding of the content.
I have been struggling with math ever since high school even in regular math classes; however, Prof Bowers' lectures helped me understand the calc concepts more deeply and is super clear on how to solve questions. He answers Piazza questions quickly. His exams/quizzes have conceptual true/false questions which are a bit tough.
Lectures were really helpful, clearly explained material. His quizzes were tough though, and more conceptual which is something i'm not used to in math courses. Edfinity is used for homework & can be really finicky when entering in answers.
The class has an optional final if you do well on the three midterms. Honestly not a bad class, IF you have a background in calculus. His lectures for us were virtually useless personally and his pace is kind of terrible, but the class itself isn't hard and it's cheap. All quizzes/midterms are open note/online calculator open too.
Professor Bowers overall was great. The class material was very clear and organized. I liked that he had prerecorded videos to watch so that I could go back and review something if needed. Exams are very conceptual so make sure you know conceptual ideas and not just how to do the problems.
Dr. Bowers is incredibly caring and kind. The one con of taking his class (I took MATH10B) is using Wolfram Alpha's Mathematica program. His lectures go over the content by hand but he encourages us to do hw/online exams with Mathematica. Obviously this won't carry over into other math courses so be sure you actually know what you're doing.
Conceptually hard class but his structure is very clear and organized. hard quizzes but overall this professor makes calc more enjoyable.
He explains very clearly but the homework and quizzes were very hard. I asked a friend to take a look at my homework (he was taking 20E at the time and this was 10B) and he couldn't do it either
the quizzes and midterms and final are all online so its super convenient and flexible for students. taking him again next quarter!
Professor Bowers has 10 quizzes throughout the quarter and 2 Midterms and 1 Final. There also was a Make-up exam for students to take if they wanted to drop the lowest exam of the four. All the lectures are prerecorded and the slides are posted. Overall a manageable class, especially for math. Will be taking him again next year!
Bowers is a very great professor! His class was a review for me from high school but for even those that are learning Pre-Calc for the first time, his lectures are very great. He does homework through online. His quizzes/exams are also online so just be ready to do math through a screen. Overall a great class to learn in. Badside: I had a eh TA
good professor, quizzes and homework due every Tuesday. Overall was a good course
Bower's explained everything very well. Weekly open note quizzes that were very concept based rather than the actual calculations. Discussion/TA was very unhelpful and unenjoyable and attendance to that was mandatory. tests were all online and open note.
Lectures were a bit boring but walks you well along the material. SI and discussions did not help at all. Grading was a bit off and lots of homework on edfinity. The test material sometimes is not covered in class anda complete curveball, all tests are online.
Amazing professor re took him again for math 10A. Very nice and understanding. Exams are online and no need to purchase a textbook. But must purchase homework site ($25). Honesty super easy class if you do the homework and attended lectures. Dropped some of the weekly quizzes and some discussion sections. No rounding but overall great professor!
Prof Bowers was pretty good overall and had very simple lesson plans and slides. Lectures were always recorded and were clear when answering students' questions. As someone who hates math, he made precalculus very simple.
#king, very homework heavy ): but great professor overall. some of the questions he puts on the quizzes, midterms, final are like curveballs
He's a good professor, but if you want to pass the course, go to tutoring. He sometimes has concepts that weren't covered on the exams SO GO TO TUTORING. Grade has many moving parts such as projects, hw, quizzes, final, and midterms. Drops the lowest score of the categories. Exams are more concept-based than calculations.
Highly recommend Prof. Bowers. He does online, open notes quizzes and exams. Certain assignments can be done with multiple tries. If given the chance to take his class, I recommend doing so.
He is so slay. Very nice and great professor. It's easy to fall behind and not understand concepts so you may want to reach out and try to get that extra help if you can. He is very lenient in grading, he drops the lowest exam/quiz/project (project is basically a quiz with multiple attempts). I rarely went to lecture (@ 8am) and I still passed lol
Took Bowers for Math3C and Math10A. The lectures were clear, concise, and very neat. Homework was a solid 15 questions a week and his late policy is flexible. Exams (3 midterms & final for 10A) and weekly quizzes were online and the lowest two quiz scores were dropped as well as the lowest of the exams (including the final). A+ taste in bowties.
makes exams difficult, understand the lecture and homework inside out to pass
Don't take Bowers for 10B. Doesn't matter if it's the summer or regular quarter, the reason why 10B is the most failed class at UCSD is because he refuses to curve grades. The reason why he refuses to curve grades is because everything was worth 20% of grade. Homework, Quizzes, Final, 2 Midterms each. Take Bowers for any other class instead.
This class is purely CONCEPTUAL. All of his exams and quizzes include true or false questions that are very difficult. His exams do not correspond to the lecture slides or homework. Genuinely do not know where he is getting these exam questions. The math is not hard, it is just the random conceptual questions that get you.
Very easy class. all exams and quizzes online. Low stress. his examples and lectures are not that helpful and the discussions are a waste of time but overall the class was very easy.
Drops lowest exam grade which is super helpful, projects & quizzes usually every week, discussion section mandatory sadly but allowed to miss 2. not podcasted but has old 2020 lecture videos instead. good for math10a!
I had high hopes for Bowers after seeing how good his ratings were but was extremely disappointed. Lots of homework and his lectures weren't helpful because quizzes and tests were mostly conceptual. If you're just looking to pass, this class will be easy for you. If you want an A and don't have a strong math background, be prepared to work hard.
He's decent. Nothing outstanding, but he's funny and presents the material in a comprehensive way. I took calculus in highschool so I found the content easy, but I could definitely see how someone that has no experience would struggle here. Quiz questions are mostly T/F which was challenging considering it was not always talked about in class.
I've taken calc before, so this class wasn't too bad (I'm also not that good at math). The lectures aren't mandatory, and they didn't help me anyway. He drops the lowest exam grade, two quizzes, and a project, which is nice. He's really sweet and funny, but his quizzes and exams did stress me out. However, I still recommend him!
Class is kinda hard, but Bowers always does his best to make sure his students understand the content. His lectures are super helpful and he always clearly answers questions during lectures and says these questions out loud. He is kind and funny!
His lectures would have been better if he didn't spend most of the time overexplaining proofs and theorems. Would only get through 1-2 examples in lecture which made the HW much harder to do. Test material was way more complicated than taught in lecture. Mostly ture/false questions that were super conceptual. Okay prof but very frustrating class
This class has a lot of true or false questions that come out of absolute nowhere. You have 3 online midterm exams and an in person final. The midterms were a lot more difficult and not relevant to the type of examples seen in lecture. The final exam was more fair. You were given a cheat sheet but no calculator.
His exams get difficult but his notes are very organized compared to the other profs. When I took it, the midterm and final were online, but after the fall quarter, the final became inperson for the next 10A class. The hw does help with understanding the basic concepts but IMO they didn't help that much for the exams. He has rare but funny jokes.
The final for WI24 was inperson. Most of the questions were from the quizzes and midterms, not rly the note examples. You get one, double sided cheat sheet. The midterms were online, so if u got good midterm scores, u can bomb the final and still pass with at least a B-.
mandatory attendance in DI, overall really sweet professor who cares for his students. Lots of safety nets cause theres sm work, (weekly projects, quizzes and 3 hws), but that ensures that if u bomb the final youll do find if u got everything else done well. I did not do well on final, and i still passed w a B bc of all the work.
Bowers is a solid professor. Clear and informative lectures with lots of step by step examples. Lots of assignments. HW, quizzes, discussion worksheets are all graded, so plenty of safety nets if you don't do well on the midterms or final. Exams were relatively easy, just a lot of true or false questions pulled from lecture slides.
whatever you do, DO NOT take 10B with Bowers over the summer. He just pre recorded a bunch of lectures and they were super hard to follow. The exams were also difficult.
Best math professor. Lectures at a pace that welcomes questions and engages students new to the material. I went to almost all his office hours, and he was very helpful. Midterm was reflective of what was taught in class. View the homeworks as prep for exams. 10/10 would take again
The professor is decent overall, with clear lectures and a fair grading system. There are a lot of assignments, but they serve as helpful practice. While the exams can be challenging, using resources like unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook can really aid in preparation.
Dr. Bowers' lectures were always super helpful as he explained problems step-by-step. lectures are not recorded so make sure to attend otherwise posted slides can be confusing. discussions not mandatory. tests are very similar to practice exams and problem bank questions. he responds super quick to questions on piazza. office hours m, t, w, and f.
Bowers is hilarious and teaches really clearly. I think math is difficult in a lecture setting(at least for me) so the TA in your discussion can make all the difference. I'd recommend Bowers to anyone though as I did enjoy all his jokes and lectures.
Speeds through important parts of lecture just to finish the section and I hated that. Does not podcast so you have to just gaslight yourself into thinking you understood the new material. Midterms and finals werent too bad but I found it so difficult to not have a cheat sheet considering how much your expected to know by memory. NO CURVE
Prof. Bowers is a very funny man, but not the greatest lecturer. He posts annotated slides, but the lecture isn't recorded, so its not too clear how he got from one step to another. If you have taken pre-calc/trig before, the class materials should not be too difficult. Grade is 20% per midterm (2), 40% final. Lowest midterm replaced by final!
Mr. Bowers is an amazing professor. He provides slides and genuinely cares. Weekly homework but they are fairly easy. His lectures are easy to follow and engaging
I love how Professor Bowers would include a few jokes every once in a while. He always made sure to show plenty of examples of how to solve problems, which made understanding the course better. There were 2 homework assignments each week (online and paper), but doable. He also tried his best to set up convenient office hours.
He is good at explaining things I'm just not good at math. He's one of the best math teachers here, but he doesn't podcast which sucks. Gives plenty of resources outside of lectures to help prep for the two midterms and the final. He genuinely wanted his students to pass and you could tell by the way he kept checking in on everyone in the lecture.
Great professor! For Fall 2022, lectures were in-person, with weekly online homework via Edfinity and weekly online quizzes. The lecture slides were useful for homework and exam prep. There were two midterms and a final exam, all online and open-note. Attendance at discussion and SI sections was mandatory.
Made understanding concepts way harder than they needed to be and midterms are very short and sometimes on concepts only covered in the textbook. He grades 95% testing and are online SO NO PARTIAL CREDIT. I don't believe that is fair for a calc math class of this type. He has decent slides but he is not helpful when talking to him in person.
I agree with the comment right below me because I took him for Math20A too. I was lowk failing hard af but he let us retake a quiz and a midterm just cos we were all failing and now im striving GGS
95% percent of your grade is made up of exams, and quizzes lmao. and midterms and the final is being graded through autograder by a computer system, so no partial credit. gave a retake on a midterm and quiz because everybody was lowk failing, so much stress for a calc class. made things way too difficult.
95% of your grade is made up of 6 exams, but the professor was kind enough to let us retake 2 for a higher score, and also gave us practice exams to offer more support. He's a great lecturer and very understanding. Seems like we also received a slight curve? because my B+ was rounded to an A-. Overall recommend, just beware of the TTC online exams.
The goat. applied a curve which saved me from failing. also gave quiz and midterm retake. Multiple grading methods available as well that pull from your best scores.
i genuinely thought I was abt to bomb this class LOLL tests r reasonable in difficulty n have their fair share of easy/hard problems but sometimes throws a curveball. but it also math so u should master everything not js the basics?? but sups generous n gave a make-up quiz AND midterm bc of this funk as online testing that gave no partial credit.
Soild instructor, clear slides, and goes step by step through example problems so the concepts easy to understand.
HW is optional & attendance isnt mandatory for the DI & LE so the whole class feels optional & easy to skip. Bc HW is optional, the only things graded are 2 Midterms, Final, & 4 Quizzes. The quizzes are very easy, you get 3 attempts per Q, 6 Q total, are everyother week & can be scheduled whenever. Prof is chill, v engaging, wears a bowtie everyday
BOWERS IS GOATED! LEs and DISs are suggested but not mandatory. The two midterms are fair. 4 Quizzes online, with 3 chances per question, given a practically identical practice quiz beforehand to prepare. Bowers is very knowledgeable, and his 8am was worth waking up for. He could prolly teach math to a sea slug he's that good at teaching. TAKE HIM
While lecture and discussion are not mandatory to attend, I heavily suggest attending lecture at minimum. He teaches in a way that is easy to digest and he goes through everything step-by-step if need be. Very approachable, kind, and has a very clear syllabus to follow. Highly recommend as someone who struggled in AP Calc AB and is now thriving.
he is money minded
i love professor bowers. he is such a kind soul and if he was my age i would be best friends with him. you should go to lectures lowkey cs i regret skipping. he explains everything clearly in his lectures. the tests arent exactly like the lectures, but if you know the material from the lectures and you have critical thinking skills you'll be fine.
Good lecturer but sometimes gets carried away, midterms are standardized so some questions might come as a surprise if he didn't go over it too much in lecture. If he provides sample exams, do them, even though he says they're not gonna be similar to the real exams they will be. Textbook is optional. Easy biweekly quizzes.
Decent prof, just spend time on practice problems, review past midterms, AND GO TO LECTURES.
MY ABSOLUTE KING!!!! I thought I was bad at math, but prof Bowers makes Calc II so straightforward. His lectures are very clear, and he shows the step-by-step process for each question in his slides. Class is based on two midterms, 4 homework quizzes, and a final. The exams are exactly like the lectures and homework. TAKE HIM!!! He's such a cutie!
I really liked his class! He's very goofy and made the content easy to understand. He makes his quizzes + midterms very easy and just wants everyone to do well. Lecture and discussion are not mandatory, but I would recommend going to the lecture.
The practice quizzes are literally made for you to ace the real ones (plus there's 3 attempts per question), and the HW & lessons on Learnvia are very easy. You're essentially guaranteed 100% on those categories, so lock in on midterms and the final!! He also offers a make-up midterm and a makeup quiz and drops the lowest score in those categories.
If you're bad at math, you NEED to actually put in the work. His office hours are very accessible and his explanations are pretty clear. Also, go to his lectures, they're very helpful. You do need to read the textbook for some homework problems though. I didn't pass this class (I'm horrible at exams) but he was a great professor. Highly recommend.
Skips through steps and calculations during lectures. Which I would understand in a higher level math but this is a prep course and those small bits hinders learning. Midterms were not too bad. Horrendous discussion sections. SKIP THOSE. NOT RECORDED LECTURES EITHER. HW is not at all representative of test material. Fall 2024 course
Professor Bowers is not an unreasonable professor but his class is not as easy as many reviews lead you to believe. In my experience the homework and quizzes didn't connect well to the mid-terms and finals.
Doc Bowers was a hilarious prof, attend discussions for practice (not mandatory though). Do student guide and all homework for your benefit... Can makeup one midterm (pretty easy) and one quiz to replace lowest score. Quizzes and final for me were at CBTF (be wary of parentheses and save before submitting..) Has free textbook, but I never read it.
Knowledgeable and prolific professor. Lectures were easy to digest and gave a good preview of future tests and quizzes. All quizzes and the final are taken online, practice materials for both are found on Canvas and PrairieLearn, respectively. Drops the lowest grade of three midterms/six quizzes, but only if you took the makeup.
I really enjoyed the class. I think there were enough chances to improve my grade. We had 2 out of 3 midterms counted, 4 out of 5 quizzes and one online final. If you are consistent, this class shouldn't be a problem.
I appreciate how Professor Bowers cracks a few jokes in class sometimes. His slides are well-formatted and his handwriting is neat. Homework is optional, but completing it will help you. Quizzes are easy A's if you practice them with PrairieLearn. He's super generous and offers a makeup midterm that can't hurt your grade. No cheat sheets allowed.
No lectures or homework are mandatory and all of your grades are from at the testing center quizzes and in class exams. You get three tries to get full credit on the quizzes and questions are pulled from homework so they aren't difficult. His lectures are good, if not slightly boring, but it was a good way to learn and practice the content.
Quizzes are really easy if you do the practice ones, midterms were a bit hard, but the final was pretty easy. During the lectures, he goes over the easiest examples possible, but questions on exams are way harder. And he doesn't assign any homework to practice doing harder questions.
