Boyden is awesome. I never took chem in high school, so Boyden actually takes the time to make sure Im understanding what we are doing. He actually cares about his students. Hes super laid back. Expect a quiz every Monday, but theyre pretty easy. Id highly recommend him as a professor if you can have him.
Professor Boyden is a fairly young and new professor. As long as you go to class and get the notes that he provides in his lectures, you will have no difficulty. There is not much homework. He is very straight forward and he does not put anything on quizzes and tests that you have not seen before. He is fun and interesting so take him if you can!
I loved professor Boyden, we was easy to talk to and great at explaining difficult concepts. I definitely recommend him as a professor
such a cool guy! very laidback. tests and quizes were easy if you went to lecture and do his discussion worksheets
Chemistry is a very difficult class but Boyden really broke things down so that it was easier to understand. Be prepared to take a lot of notes and fast because he flies through the lectures everyday and sometimes its hard to keep up. He doesn't give out any extra credit. Tests and quizzes are hard so make sure you know your stuff. He's a cool guy
I loved Boyden. Gave interesting lectures. Super nice guy. Made chemistry interesting for a non science major. Class wasn't super tough. Highly recommend him.
Adam Borden is a really nice guy and I loved having him as a professor. He really knows his stuff and dose the best he can to make long lectures interesting. His tests and quizzes are based off of the notes in lecture and if you study you should pass without a problem. Highly recommend this professor!!
He is a great professor and this was his first year teaching! He did a great job teaching, and was very caring towards all his students!
I thought this Prof was ok. Not the best but not the worst. But, it is just his first year of teaching so I think he'll get better over the years. Sometimes what he says isn't that clear and he will try to clarify. Chm 109 is generally a hard class so if you put the time in a good grade is very possible. I would probably take him again.
He is really nice and wants to make sure everyone understands the material
Tough quizzes and tests. Does easier examples in class and gives difficult questions on exams. Additionally, there were multiple times we had homework due over material we had not learned in class. Once when I emailed him about it, he admitted that we hadn't learned that and said it was okay to use google. Like what?!
Boyden is a clear and concise communicator who welcomes questions. His lectures are extremely well planned and very efficient. He provides a reading schedule which compliments his lectures, and discussion is always a great opportunity to think deeper on the concepts that were taught during lecture. He is approachable, relatable. Likely to succeed
He is very unclear with what he wants of us. He marks you down for the stupidist things on tests and quizes. Gives super easy examples in class and then had the absolute hardest tests ever. He grades tough and gets mad during discussion when the class doesnt know how to do something.
At first, I loved him, but now that we're coming to the end of the seester he has gotten very short tempered. He gets mad when the class can't answer a question because he expects us to know the answer and nobody does. He walked out on his discussion class because nobody knew an answer. Reviews are very simple & easy, then exams are difficult???
Great guy. He doesn't explain things as thoroughly as I would likeI think most would agree. Luckily he is always willing to answer questions to clarify. This is the type of class that you will likely be spending most of your time on with studying because it is a lot of information. I feel like he explains what is on the test/quizzes pretty well.
Attendance to lecture isn't mandatory but attendance to discussion is. Prof Boyden is great, easy to understand and super available outside of class if you have questions. He's also a fair grader, which is always appreciated in a math-heavy subject.
I don't even know where to begin, prof Boyden was one of the worst profs I've ever had. His lectures were boring and confusing, he got angry when nobody knew the answer to something he hadn't taught, and he always gave extremely easy examples in class but exponentially harder questions on quizzes/exams. Save yourself the headache and don't take him
I did not care for this professor AT ALL! I struggled all semester because he did not teach the best. Its only his 2nd year here, but still. He gives extra credit but it does not help much, and he is a tough grader for exams. In the end if you have a lower grade if you participate in class you get a little boost if you're in between percent's.
Correction I meant to put CHM 109 but this professor also walked out on our discussion and got mad because we didn't know an answer to his question because in lecture he never went over it. Also the reviews/practice problems are way easier than the complex problems he gives for the exam.
Very knowledgable. He'd focus on harder topics in discussion & even review in lecture if needed. Graded fairly on quizzes & gave credit for showing work. He is very accessible outside of class & was always willing to answer any question his student's had. This course was not an easy A by any means, but getting a good grade is definitely possible.
Professor Boyden was one of my favorite professors. During his lectures, he took notes with the class so you wouldnt get too far behind. He was always willing to answer questions. Discussion was annoying to attend but always helpful. If you took chem in high school, it was basically the same material just a little more in depth.
Professor Boyden is a great guy. He loves his job and definitely tries to make lecture as interesting as he can. Hes passionate about teaching and explaining things people dont understand. He gets frustrated sometimes with too many questions but overall hes willing to help and provides extra credit opportunities. Put in effort & youll do great.
I didn't do very well in this class but that was my own problem. Professor Boyden is a great teacher! Just attend lecture and study and you'll be fine.
I got an A in high school chemistry but struggled with some of the ways Adam taught the material. Exams are hard and a large part of your grade. Adam was overall very helpful inside and outside of class. Discussion was mandatory but also very helpful. if you have questions he will answer them.
Professor Boyden was overall a good teacher, I didnt have any problems. He writes notes with you which is very helpful and does practice problems to help you understand. He just gets a little mad when people dont participate. Chem 109 is a difficult class in general & you do have to study, he is a good professor you just have to be a good student
Prof Boyden really enjoys his job and it shows. He writes out his lectures so it's really easy to keep up with him and not miss any information. He also does a lot of practice problems in class. The tests are challenging but if you study for them and do the practice tests that he gives you they aren't hard to do well on.
Professor Boyden is a great professor. His teaching style consists of lots of examples to problems which was very helpful. He is very organized and tells you what you need to know for the exams. Would highly reccomend.
Professor Boyden was awesome. The class itself is hard, especially if you've never taken chemistry. If you're willing to put in the work, he'll work with you as much as needed. Lectures are paced well but, you have to do all assignments in class and out to succeed.
Super nice. Clearly tells what will be on the tests and quizzes. Wants you to succeed!
Professor Boyden has great lectures, his notes are very detailed and you can tell he cares a lot about understanding the subject. BUT, if you are one to skip class a lot do not, you can always get the notes from a friend but you will miss a lot of the application he creates in class. If you study youll be fine, also doesnt like phones in class.
Boyden is great! Works through the concepts and applications really well. He's very friendly, and he was sympathetic to when I was having a hard time (not related to school) and willing to work with me. Quizzes go along with lecture and are written well. The questions are almost never worded poorly.
He's awesome! Does his best to keep you engaged. I'd recommend getting a group to study with as fast as you can theres a quiz every week, it can be a lot to go over if you wait until last minute. He grades based on work so if you get the answer wrong you still get points. sometimes his answers to questions make me more confused. Get him if you can!
Prof Boyden wasn't a bad teacher, I had a hard time with a lot of his lectures and understanding the way he taught things. I would definitely recommend getting a tutor.
I absolutely loved Professor Boyden. He writes the notes with you so it is nicely paced. Discussions are required and get you grade points for showing up and are very helpful. He is always available outside of class and is willing to help you succeed. He does appreciate when you participate in lecture as well so it is not simply silent. Great prof!
By far my favorite professor my first semester of college. Professor Boyden was not only a helpful prof, but he genuinely cared about every student, making a point to know every student's name. Study guides are the same style as exams and discussion is super helpful bc it's full of practice probs. Buy the access code, but not the book. Take him!!
Best Chemistry 109 professor. Clear grading criteria, super caring, and really tries to get and know his students. You should goto his office hours and you will see him all the time in the CSC. Lectures and notes are so helpful. He writes the notes along with students and asks for questions during lecture. Please participate + ask Questions.
Boyden is hands down the best science prof I've ever had. He is blunt with his warnings about having to know certain topics really well, but it helps you out in the long run. He is SUPER accessible if you need help or have questions. His lecture notes are organized and he uses lots of diagrams to help you understand the material. Take him!!
WORST PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE HIM I HATED GOING TO CLASS!!! He acts like everyone should know everything already and does not really have respect I feel for his students and their concerns. Do not take him youll regret it
Seriously do not take Adam boyden you will regret it. Does not help at all and very rude and makes student feel dumb and like they do not care when we try our best! Hes seriously one of the worst teachers
Literally the best professor Grand Valley has to offer. Even in a 200 plus person lecture, he makes the effort to know you each by name. If you put in a lot of effort he will see that . He is easily accessible outside of class and wants to help! He not only cares about your grade but he also cares about you personally. Seriously the best guy ever.
Professor Boyden is my absolute favorite professor. I took him for CHM 109 and now taking him for CHM 230. He really cares about his students and takes time to make sure students understand the material. Office hours were a life-saver! Best professor I have had so far. Highly recommend!!! ps. He doesn't give handouts--not a lot of EC
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! Literally many breakdowns over this class and he didnt even care to hear me about my problems with the materials and is very rude. Definitely has favorites. Literally hated this class he made me hate chemistry and no clue how he teaches still because he is a horrible teacher DO NOT TAKE HIM, he doesnt want you to succeed.
Professor Boyden is the BEST professor if you need structure (I had him for 109 too!) For a 8 AM class I was fully engaged! Print out his lecture skeleton notes and participate (He really does care about you!). There are weekly quizzes but they are great "check points" to check understanding. Office hours were helpful if you were struggling.
Really good guy. Wants you to succeed. He always stresses how important participation is and gives you tips on how to succeed in class. Definitely show up for lecture and discussion! Tests are kind of hard but if you study well it will pay off. He doesn't curve but did replace our exam 3 grades with our final if it helped since we went online
Professor Boyden is a great professor. He gives a clear outline of how to succeed in his class and his expectations. He is kind of sarcastic and sometimes makes you feel stupid about the questions you ask, but deep down he wants what is best for you and will support you in whatever you need to succeed in his class.
Worst professor ever. Seriously dont take him he plays favorite for those who had him previously for chem 109 and if you didnt then he didnt really care to get to know you or anything! I suggest taking ANYONE else and his exams are very hard and are not like any of the notes
Professor Boyden is a great teacher. He is very accessible outside of class, and he answers emails very fast. However, he throws a lot of homework, and the Chemistry Success Center will help if you have the time to go. His exams were straight forwards. If you attend his lectures, discussions, and willing to put in the work, you will receive an A.
Professor Boyden is a good professor if you're willing to work for it. He wants you to succeed and and he won't test you on anything he didn't talk or lecture about. Participating is extremely important to him so I highly recommend asking and answering questions throughout the class. Overall he's a good professor for a difficult class!
Overall, Boyden was a decent professor. He could be a little blunt at times with students' questions but what else can you expect at an 8am lecture? This class is extremely hard so use every resource he presents you. Very lecture heavy so don't miss class. It's easy to fall behind so make sure you ask questions the moment you don't understand.
This class is HARD. Boyden is an incredible professor though. If you like to skip class, do not even bother taking this class because you will not pass. You have to work hard in this class and you take notes everyday that you do not have a quiz or test. Quizzes happen weekly and exams monthly. My suggestion USE OFFICE HOURS/GET A TUTOR.
This class will be hard for non-STEM-based majors, but Boyden was there to help during his many office hours. When he tells you at the beginning of the semester to seek help if you need it, he means it and he will follow through. For people who do not move quickly and do not plan ahead, this may be a hard course in general but prof helped a lot..
Professor Boyden was a good professor. Everything was online, we met once a week on zoom for practice questions. Lectures seemed to take a long time, an hour or two. Homework was pretty easy. He gave 2 attempts for each quiz, both exams, and the final. Gave two extra credit points for each surveys he sent out (3 I think). Highly Recommend.
Seems like a cool guy but he is a really tough teacher, at least for me. He switched quiz and test questions between attempts and the class was the hardest I have ever taken. This class has been my worst grade in my life and it was a lot of work.
This class is not easy, but Boyden is a great professor. Skeleton notes are posted where you fill in the notes as you watch the lecture videos. We meet once a week over zoom to do practice problems. 2 attempts were given for quizzes and exams including the final. He was very helpful during office hours and gives extra credit. Highly recommend.
Boyden is an excellent professor! My course was completely online, but the prof made sure to have office hours every week and more resource if we needed them. Labs were simple and easy to follow.
The only way you will keep a good grade is if you do the notes, worksheets, and attend lectures. If you do all these things you will get the grade you deserve. Professor was amazing, made himself available to everyone at almost anytime. He is super flexible with office hours and explains content better than any other prof that I've had.
He was really nice. I struggled with the all online aspect. He was easy to reach out to and willing to help. The quizzes were hard and the weekly homework assignments could sometimes be time consuming and confusing.
He is very organized, a great instructor, and knows how to explain the material to be understood. He responds in a timely manner along with extra credit opportunities.
Professor Boyden is a great guy who definitely cares about your success. The class is challenging and you won't pass if you skip, so be ready to work. The exam cover a lot of content too, which got overwhelming. I got a tutor for this class as well and that helped a ton, so I would look into getting one if you struggle with chemistry.
I loved professor Boyden for CHM 109. His lectures were also super clear, and he made a giant lecture hall feel like a family. He was super encouraging and my entire class participated daily. Few people were afraid to ask questions. Hes very accessible outside of class, and over all a super cool guy. Highly recommend if youre new to chem.
Prof. Boyden had clear expectations for students and an excellent breakdown of course content. He lectured well, and had a lot of resources accessible for students. Responded to emails promptly, had office hours, and very easy to work with if something comes up. Overall, I would take him again and I think he is probably my favorite chm prof. so far
I came into this class knowing a decent amount of material and I felt that he was really an all around great professor. Not too much homework and very few tests. You do need to show up or get the notes from someone because his lectures are very informational. He's very approachable and answers questions well. Really enjoyed being in his class.
The best professor I've had. He explained things very well and made it so we didn't feel intimidated to ask question in lecture. I struggled with chemistry in high school but he made me actually enjoy chemistry. He offers extra credit occasionally and gives a lot of material for us to practice with.
Professor Boyden is an amazing professor. I was scared about chemistry in college because it was a bit difficult for me in high school, but his teaching style is amazing!! If you want to do well in this course, USE YOUR RESOURCES, whether it is his office hours or the Chemistry success center. If you can, TAKE PROFESSOR BOYDEN!!!
I really liked Prof Boyden. CHM 109 isnt easy but he really takes the time to help you because he wants you to succeed. He gets to know you and that creates a comfortable environment in lecture and discussion. His exams are pretty hard though so if you keep up with the material youll be fine.
This professor rushes through lectures and often ends class early. The tests are NOTHING like the study guide/practice test. He is overall just a hard teacher and I 8/10 wouldn't recommend.
You will get exactly what you put into this class. The class itself is pretty difficult, and if you skip class and don't study, don't be surprised if your grade is low. That being said, if you put in lots of effort, then you'll do just fine. The professor himself is friendly and easy to work with, so I'd recommend the class overall.
I was not a huge fan of chemistry in high school but this class helped me understand it way better! Prof Boyden did a great job explaining the material and provided skeleton lecture notes to write on, which I found very helpful. He gives you practice exams and take-home worksheets to help you prepare for the exams (only 2), which helped me a lot.
I was very nervous to take this class but Boyden made it more comforting with his teaching style and the many resources that were provided. The amount of work you put into this class will reflect your overall grade. I was not a fan of his exams as they were mostly written and pretty difficult.
I really enjoyed this class! Although not required, I would strongly suggest attending lectures, this is what helped me learn the content. If you attend class and discussion the homework isn't too difficult. He was readily available for help outside of class and was available at the CSS at times. Overall a great professor for intro chemistry!
Come to class or else all homework and exams will be hard. Make sure you take advantage of office hours. lectures go by fast. make sure you always study. attendance isn't mandatory, but you should still go. the material is very hard if you don't study or do any of the work. always study notes and come to lecture!!
Best prof I've had so far. He actually wants you to understand the content and gives a variety of ways to keep your grade up it's not just exams. Lecture is important so that's a must. Notes are well laid out and exam questions are pulled from discussion worksheets and just tweaked a little. Don't use the actual textbook but he has it linked.
Lectures are VERY important! Once he made lectures optional, many started to fail. Discussions are a must too! Very helpful! Go talk to him and create a relationship, will definitely help you by the end of the semester.
He is very intense and seems intimidating at first, but he's a great guy and very caring for his students. He is great at explaining concepts and giving practice problems, but you will have to put in your own time as well.
He is amazing! This professor actually goes around and asks students if anyone has any questions or is stuck on anything that needs clarification which made me very comfortable to ask him any question. He explains the materials so well and gives visual examples on the board which are so helpful. I wish there were more professors like him.
He did move very fast but overall very helpful and organized. He gives out a ton of extra credit if you just show up to lecture and discussion. He is an awesome professor if you show up and make sure you put in work.
Professor Boyden is a great professor. He gives you skeleton notes that you can just print off and he takes notes with you. It is definitely a class that you can't miss or else you fall really far behind. Discussion is optional but to really succeed in the class definitely attend.
Doesn't want you to succeed. Expects you to fail the 1st time you take his class, favors those taking it the 2nd time. Forget trying to make up a test for health/family reasons. Doesn't accept mental health problems. I dread going to class. Lecture isn't technically mandatory but he expects you to go and will grade harder if you miss classes.
Super nice and caring professor! You have to put the work in to get the grade you want. He is very clear on what it takes to succeed, I recommend taking him for discussion also! Get to know the people around you so they can help you if you miss a day. Overall amazing class, crazy that he knew everyones name in class made the class feel like family.
Prof. Boyden told our class that if we got behind at all we would fail. He does not care about the grade you get and if you do not show up to lecture or discussion he grades you harder.
Gives extra credit for simple things like going to the online lectures/discussions when online. He sets you up for success as much as he can, never a waste of time. Is not a boring lecture, he makes it interesting. Very good professosr.
If I could give him a 0 I would. He is the most uncaring, disrespectful professor I've ever had. He gives students no flexibility for makeups even when there are serious circumstances. He doesn't want his students to pass, and you'd better hope that you and your loved ones have perfect health while taking his class or he'll make sure you fail!
Professor Boyden is amazing. People who give him bad reviews are the ones who skip lecture and don't use resources like the CSC/discussion to help themselves succeed. He is very organized and tells you exactly what to expect. Quizzes and homework are pretty much completion in this class so put the work in and you'll do just fine.
Boyden is overall a good professor. He is straightforward about what is required of you for the class, and the effort you must put in to be successful. He can be intense and move quickly during lectures, but you have to pay attention and take notes. He also provides lots of materials and practice problems, and is very accessible outside of class
Professor Boyden's class is easy if you show up to class and the discussions. He is very organized and offers many resources to help you understand the material. He randomly offers extra credit and provides study guides that help with the exam tremendously. I would highly recommend going to his office hours and the CSC.
One of the best professors I've had. Class moves quickly and some content can be difficult. Tests are taken in person however I preferred this as it forced you to know the content. Provided lecture slides to fill in your notes, making it easy to keep everything organised. Helpful for extra advice and support, and flexible around a busy schedule!
Professor Boyden was a great chem teacher to have for chem 109. He creates a great note-taking document to follow when in lecture, which is very helpful when getting to know the material. His exams are also very fair and just like what is taught in class, so there are no surprises.
Professor Boyden is a great CHM 109 professor and his lecture structure was very well organized. He uses skeleton notes, practice problems & practice exams which help a lot. He also drops the lowest quiz and homework score which is nice, but is very inexcusable when it comes to late work even due to sicknesses or something out of your control.
He explained things really well in lecture and it is fairly easy to maintain a good grade as long as you show up and listen. He provides many scattered extra credit points for being in class when no one else really shows up. As long as you pay attention and keep up with homework you will be fine.
Boyden is a great teacher and provides lots of resources. Skeleton notes, practice problems, and practice exams are given throughout the semester. Lots of material that can be super tough, definitely requires a lot of studying. Understand the material do not try to memorize. He says discussion is optional, but I would still go for a good grade.
Very good professor, is more on the intense side but very nice and straightforward if you show up to lecture and do all the homework. Very nice person and wants you to succeed, but wants you to put in the work required to do so. Great for introductory chemistry
Easily the best professor I have had. He gave us blank notes to help us follow along during lectures. He also provided us with a ton of practice problems for each chapter. My favorite thing that he did though is he gave us a practice exam for each exam we took. If you are a hard worker, you will get an A. If you skip and don't really try, good luck
I didn't take chemistry in HS but Boyden explained things in the best way possible. As long as you just copy the notes he takes during lecture, studying is very easy, basic questions on the test that come from the notes and study guide. Boyden can also answer your question even when even you don't know what you're asking.
I passed. He is not the nicest and can be very passive-aggressive. He threatened to report me because I said I watched his syllabus video on the syllabus quiz. He emailed me saying that he knew who viewed it and that I lied and lying is against the university policy. Over a syllabus video...make sure you watch it.
He was an overall good professor. He could be passive-aggressive at times. I wish he had the material posted on Blackboard so you could study easier instead of going all the way to the CSC. The material isn't the hardest you really need to practice and then go to the CSC to check your answers. The material isn't posted so you must go to class.
One of my favorite professors. If you attend lecture and discussion, do the homework, and ask questions you'll do great. He made the material very easy to understand and was very receptive to when students were struggling. He provided us with practice exams and they were super helpful. If you put in the effort, then you will get a good grade.
I took this class to fulfill my general education credit for science with a lab and I am a Business major. Professor Boyden is a great professor who cares about his class. He is easy to reach out of class and is a very easy person to ask questions and get a great answer. The class can be difficult, but if you put in effort you will pass this class.
One of my favorite professors. Lectures are very easy to follow even with tough material. He provides blank note pages to follow along with throughout the lecture. As he lectures, he goes through that same blank page and fills it out just as you should. He is super nice and wants you to succeed as long as you put in the work and want to do good.
Amazing professor. His lectures were crystal clear, he posted lecture information online, his quizzes made sense, his exams were exactly what we learned in class, and if you show up to class you will be fine. Super nice guy, too.
Prof Boyden was great. He's super funny and helpful. He doesn't take attendance in lecture, but if you skip a lot you probably won't pass. He was always clear on his expectations and how the tests would be. If you have trouble I recommend his office hours or going to the CSC because they have the answers to his practice problems and can help a lot.
Boyden is kind of intimidating at first, but he is an amazing professor! I had him for lab and he was always so helpful. Make sure you ask questions when you need, he answers questions so well. He explains the labs so clearly and overall is a good guy. He sets a good lab environment.
I have high respect for Professor Boyden. There is a content calendar so you are aware of every due date. His lectures are well explained, and you can review with lecture videos online. There are optional practice problems and practice exams to help you study, but it is truly up to you to put in the time and use those resources! Go to office hours!
literally a 10/10!! He's the best professor ever and he makes a confusing topic like CHM 109 and helps you understand it so much better. He provides fill in the blank notes which is always a bonus. Literally so helpful and knows what he's talking about. He wants you to succeed!
in the begging everything was great but as time went on he made it clear that he does not care if you pass or fail his class. when coming back to ask questions after an exam, there was little to no feedback.
This class is by far extremely hard and requires a lot of studying, he is very fast paced but always willing to help as long as you put the effort in. Asking questions in class will help. He grades hard but quizzes and exams aren't very long.
Professor Boyden is an amazing chem professor. He is very easy to talk to and learn from. I had him for lecture, discussion, and lab and he was very helpful. He goes fast, but he's always engaging during lectures and asking for questions. He's very organized and well-spoken. He also provides practice problems and lecture videos for extra help.
Before taking his class, know that it is going to take a fair amount of effort in order to do well in his class. With that being said though, Professor Boyden is extremely organized which makes it easy to study. Go to every lecture you can, DO THE HW and OPTIONAL PRACTICE (his tests are written the same as these problems) and you will get an A.
TAKE PROF BOYDEN! If you have taken chemistry in high school, this class will feel mostly like review. He uses "skeleton notes" in lecture so you fill out exactly what he is projecting on the screen. Always encourages students to ask questions and go to office hours. He wants to get to know each student personally and loves teaching chemistry.
Boyden is a fantastic prof for Chem 109. His lectures are super easy to understand and the notes he has you copy down make studying a breeze. Every exam you get a notecard, and his exam questions are very straightforward. As long as you keep up with the homework, getting a good grade is light work. Very caring and easy to reach outside of class.
The lab itself wasn't hard, instructions for the lab were pretty easy to follow. Pay attention to details, he didn't like repeating things. Pre-lab was quick if you know the material, procedures were smooth. Show up on time with everything ready Wasn't forgiving with students misplacing lab goggles, and I was scolded in class for being 10 min late
This was a pretty tough class if you're bad at chemistry, Prof. Boyden knows what he is talking about. However, if you ask a question he will say "Well how do you think you do it". Lectures are very fast so take notes. Either print off his blank lecture notes to fill in or buy an iPad. His handwriting is not the best so it was hard to read.
He is a great professor and is very straight up with you, which I enjoyed. He cares about his students and gives multiple chances to save your grade if your not doing so well. If you have him for lab also he helps you out a ton! Make sure you go to class.
Professor Boyden is a very straight-up guy, his expectations are clear and he is very passionate about what he teaches. He can be very serious at times which can scare some and he has a no-phone policy during lecture. But he is a fantastic teacher. If you are a nursing major and need a good grade in this course he is the prof to get.
Idk he was just kinda mean and rude. Lectures weren't very helpful. Tests were very hard even with a notecard for cheat sheet. Not the worst though
I had Boyden for lab and he was not bad, but not great. He is very straight-forward, does not waste time, and is efficient. Although he is very serious which can be intimidating, he is extremely helpful. He was very willing to help me even 10 times in 5 minutes. I don't know how he is in lecture, but he is nice as a lab instructor!
One of the of the best professors I've had. He has clear expectations and offers several extra credit opportunities. He often provides real world context/examples for many of the concepts, which I think is helpful. As long as you understand the chapter practice problems going into the quizzes/exams, you will do great. Great lab professor also.
Prof Boyden is super straight up and doesn't waste time which is appreciated. He gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit and to help your grade. If you pay attention in lecture and do the practice problems, the class and content is easy. Had him for lab too, and he was super helpful. Take him for chem 109 lab or lecture if you can!!
Nice guy who is straight up with his students, he wants the best out of them while doing a good job at making them earn it themselves. He gives weekly quizzes and exams which become a lot but with EC and notes they aren't to bad. Only problem with Boyden is lack of feedback on wrong answers but overall a very good professor id recommend taking.
very straight up guy but will not put up with any late work and a very tough grader. he only liked people if they participated every day. did not give clear instructions and i felt very thrown into everything. this is def a weed out class, YOU WILL FAIL IF U DONT GIVE 110% drop if that's not you
I like Boyden's class. I got a C in high school chem, but I have an A in his class because he is a great teacher. Good lectures. He provides tons of resources including lecture videos and skeleton notes, which is super helpful. He values effort, but doesn't ask too much- just that you come to class and do the work. Take him for Chem 109!
He is a great professor and you can tell her cares about you and your grade. Chemistry is an overall hard class but he does his best to help you succeed. The exams arent as hard as he makes them seem but I would definitely study throughout the class
Professor Boyden was a great transition into college as a freshman. He was very explicit in the fact that you can not procrastinate in order to receive the grades you did in high school. Lectures were easy to follow especially with his skeleton note outlines you can fill out with him in real time on the projectors. Can't recommend him enough!
I had Boyden for chm 230 LAB and he was awesome. He always started the lab with a clear structure on what we will be doing that day. He made it very clear that you can ask as many questions as you need and he explained difficult topics in an understandable way. Def recommend him!
Prof Boyden is great! Gives guided notes and posts video versions of lectures to BB so you can catch up if you miss class. Very accessible outside of class in his office or the chemistry success center. Only thing - he is so serious it's almost hard to take him seriously. Like bro this is a basic chemistry class chill out it's not that deep.
As a freshman having Professor Boyden was a blessing. Professor Boyden understands that high school does not prepare you enough for college and gives you every tool that you need to have a successful semester. also, Professor Boyden was able to recognize us by our faces and remember our names, and it made it feel like he actually cared about us!
He is an amazing teacher, one of the best I have ever had. His lectures are really easy to follow and he encourages questions to help better understand the material. He has office hours that were helpful and his teaching style was very engaging. Really sweet guy too, very approachable and super caring and empathetic to students. :)
0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROF IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN CHEM IN HIGH-SCHOOL. This is not a good INTRODUCTORY class for anyone who has not seen/done chemistry before. He does not care if you pass or fail. You are better off going to the CSC for help/ checking work bc he gives very little feedback. There is a quiz every week.
Amazing prof! I'm not a freshman but if you are a freshman DEFINITELY take him! He makes sure you know that this isn't high school and you need to be on top of work/class. Accessible outside of class and makes an effort to learn who you are. He doesn't give great written feedback on tests but will go over questions with you during office hours
Overall was an amazing teacher. He explain things very well and provides practice problems. Chem itself is hard but if you study a little bit each day and ask questions you will pass.
Throughout my lectures with him it truly felt like he didn't want kids to succeed. We had quizzes every week and exams every other, one exam was based off of two chapter we learned in only two days. He did not take the time to make sure students were understanding the material. grading was unfair.
Professor Boyden is very fast paced for Chem 109. A tough grader and be ready to have a weekly quiz on top of an exam the next week after that. He was very irritable this semester, you will have to make time for a lot of study hours for this class. I spent many hours in the tutoring center and still barely passed with a C.
As a person, I really like Professor Boyden. He is personable and overall a good guy. As a professor, he is not my favorite guy. The content is much harder than any other CHM section, and it is very fast paced. I went to the tutoring center every week and this class was still SUPER hard to get through.
Straight-talking Prof Boyden keeps you engaged in CHEM109. With weekly quizzes and exams, the workload is heavy, but his real-world examples and willingness to help make it worthwhile. I found unstuck study's practice questions super helpful for staying on top of the material.
Prof Boyden, can be a very good prof but the lecture is heavy and you have to put in the work to understand the material. Be prepared to take lots of notes, and do a lot of outside studying. Quizzes in every discussion and exams about every 3 weeks. He can be encouraging but you have to reach out for help before he will help you.
Prof. Boyden has an expectation of every student to be on top of their work. Quizzes every week in discussion and exams every couple weeks. He gave extra credit sometimes. If you don't study or put time into the class you will not succeed in this course. He is very fast paced in lecture. Expect to go to tutoring and having weekly cry sessions.
Prof. Boyden was an excellent professor. He has strong expectations for his students, and you have to put in the effort to succeed. He gives every opportunity to succeed and provides excellent feedback if you meet with him outside of lectures to review course content. For quizzes he expects notes to be handwritten either on a tablet or paper.
I liked having prof. boyden as a chem teacher. I feel like he wants what's best for his students and offers extra credit pretty often. Sometimes he gives a heavy workload, but it's not usually too often
As a person, professor was a good person and very kind. As a professor he was a hard and at times it felt that he didn't care. He gave quizzes every week and exams every couple weeks. He expected a lot from you as a student.
Boyden is one of the best professors that I have ever had, and if you have him, you are LUCKY! He is tough, but in a good way. He makes sure that you have all of the resources you need to succeed as long as you put the work in. He is super friendly and wants you to do well in his class.
The way he explains chemistry and the examples he uses really help you to understand what you are learning. His test were very straightforward, and he was really easy to talk to.
Professor Boyden is one of the best professors I've had at GV. He was very help and good at explaining. His class is very lecture heavy but if you attend and do the work then you can succeed. If you ever need help he is more than willing to help.
had him for chm 230 lab and he was great. like any other lab the grading is pretty tough. fairly accommodating
I had Boyden for 230 lab. He was awesome. He is funny but stern about his lab rules, and will always help out if needed. I really liked him, he graded fairly, and I recommend to everyone.
Awesome prof! You could definitely tell he knew a lot about chem and wants his students to succeed. Very open to help students as long as they ask for it. Participation in lecture really helps learning the content and adjusting to his teaching style.
Professor Boyden is an amazing professor. I took him in the first semester of my freshman year, and he made everything very manageable. He takes the time to know his students by name and offers extra credit for coming in to talk about your interests. Definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Not good at explaining things
This professor is amazing. I have a learning disability, and he was very understanding about the whole situation.
Does online lectures and work sheets in class which I found helpful to understand the info and ask questions. You get credit for attendance but it isn't mandatory. Very approachable nice guy, have really enjoyed this class. It is a bit fast paced but if you took chem in highschool you'll be fine. If not use resources like learning lab if needed.
Nicest professor I have ever had! Show that you care, and he'll be pumped to know you take initiative in your education. Always willing to help and tried a flipped-learning class I super appreciated. Take him!
Lots of work for this class. His blackboard is set up really well, but his voice has a very aggressive tone, and some people are scared to ask questions because of it.
He gives very good help if you ask! His explanations of the experiments felt very thorough too. He also has good music taste so that's a plus!
Honestly professor Boyden is a G. He is very understanding and is not a super harsh grader and when he is he explains why. The class is very much so self taught, however, he is always willing to awnser questions.
Professor Boyden is very passionate. His lectures were sometimes not the best for my brain, but in class he is really good about answering questions. He goes out of his way to supply all sorts of resources!! His class is reversed learning (lectures online and homework in class). Attendance is mandatory (and he'll give extra credit for it randomly)!
Professor Boyden was fantastic. His instructions and explanations were clear, and he will help you if asked. However, he will also make you work and earn a good grade. I love how he runs his lectures. He is very well prepared and organized. One of the best professors I had at GVSU so far. I 100% recommend him.
You must stay engaged from day one through the exam, since all materials matter. There are frequent quizzes during discussions, lecture videos are the main source of content, and much group work is done in class. With no formal lectures, you rely heavily on video notes, which can be challenging.
He was a good professor, but it was definitely a hard class. You teach yourself outside of class and then do a group work during lecture time which is good for some, but not for others. Quizzes and tests are very frequent and the final was very hard.
In Chem 109, Professor Boyden mainly teaches through videos you watch before lecture, so you already know what he's talking about in class. Lectures are mostly going over the videos with questions and worksheets. He explains things clearly and gives you what you need for exams, but you have to review often so you don't forget. not bad prof. tho
Had to show up for lecture. Had us learn through videos the night before lectures (three times a week w/ homework). Tests were in discussion so be ready for that 8am. Do not forget anything because it all builds on itself. Class was hard.
