Dr. Daly believes in not providing answers so that students will collaborate more on their own. I understand wanting us to work together, but his strategies just do not help at all. He only touches on all of the subjects then moves on to the next expecting you to know each one in depth. The average on the first exam was about 55%, with no curve.
Dr. Daly might be just the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't provide accurate explanations and simply reads off his powerpoint presentations. He expects you to know the material and does a brief "review." Do not take his class.
Daly is the least helpful professor I've ever had. He does not go in detail during lectures and he assumes that everybody already knows the material. I studied so hard for a week straight for the first exam and ended up receiving a 33% with the class average being 57%. Don't take his class because you'll most likely have to take it again.
Dr. Daly is undoubtedly a genius in his field, however he maybe has too high of expectations for his class. The material he is teaching isn't easy to say in any regard but he has a quite a bit of trouble dumbing it down so that we can fully learn the subject. I wouldn't suggest taking this class if you haven't taken AP chem before. It's rough.
Awful teacher. Unbelievably unclear about everything to concepts, to answers and to what you do and do not have to do. Poorly structured class and causes more confusion than not. Would not recommend for anyone who doesnt already know everything about the topic. Get ready to teach yourself everything on your own time.
Are you the master of chemistry? If yes, take the class and you'll be fine. If not, run fast. He's a super smart guy, just has a harder time transferring the info to the students.
never explains anything, when one person gets an answer right he assumes everyone else knows it too
By far the most confusing teacher I have ever had. Spends so much time having students talk amongst themselves instead of actually instructing. You can pay attention and give him your full undivided attention. Yet still walk out knowing nothing and be more confused than ever.
Daly isn't very good at explaining the content, but the content is still pretty easy so it doesn't matter. If you to a few free supplemental instruction sessions, you'll pick up the content really fast. The first test will kill you, but the rest aren't too bad.
Dr. Daly is very nice but he is not a very good instructor. He tends to skim by important concepts and is not very good at answering questions
Daly was a good teacher. The gen chem system sucks that the only thing. regardless of which teacher you have, you will have a hard time in the class.
The content and chemical thinking program at the University of Arizona is god awful. Daly does the best job at making it tolerable. He is always there to help you when you need it and he is possibly the nicest professor I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and their well being. I would love to have him as a professor again.
He really cares about his students, but since he has to teach chemical thinking he isn't very clear since he really doesn't know how to teach that version of chemistry made by Pollard. Definitely go to the lectures he uses socrative for participation. Has trouble answering some people's questions clearly, but always has open office hours.
Chemistry might be one of hardest classes at the University of Arizona. Daly tries his best to teach the material but sometimes his explanations can still be confusing. I would recommend that you go to office hours for extra help. Although the class is difficult, I would probably hate chemistry more if Daly was not my professor.
I have to admit, I do admire Daly's positive attitude towards his students. However, the greatest issue that comes in the class is the difficulty of understanding the concepts during his lecture. I probably can't blame him because he, among other professors, has to teach under the awful 'chemical thinking' method at the U of A Chemistry Department
I love how he seems to want everyone to do well in the class and often stays late to help students. The problem is that he accidentally contradicts himself in his lectures which is especially important when explaining trends where there are only two possible answers. Often, he will work out a problem and must think that the answer is assumed?
Dr. Daly is one professor who really cares about his students. Chemistry at the UA is very difficult and he does his best to help his students do well. He even holds his own reviews for tests. However, if you're not good at chem & want to get a grade higher than a C just attending lectures is not enough. SI sessions are what make the difference.
The whole CHEM 152 course is challenging and that is why the tests are hard. However, Dr. Daly was extremely helpful! If you go to his office hours he will walk through problems with you step by step and he is extremely supportive. I would definitely recommend him!
Daly was very helpful in office hours and always kept me interested in lectures. The course is difficult but Daly is willing to help you do well in the class.
Dr. Daly is the best professor I've had at the U of A thus far. He goes so far above and beyond for his students. He gives you every opportunity to succeed, and is just overall a really motivating and kind person. Make sure you go to his office hours because he's so helpful. He is an amazing teacher and really makes Chemistry bearable.
If you have the option of taking chem with another professor, DO IT. Especially if you've never taken high school chemistry. The concepts in Daly's class are very vague; you HAVE to know the basics of chemistry when understanding lectures.
He's really cool, and definitely nice about questions.
Professor does not explain anything in depth. If you go into this class be prepared to visit supplemental instruction sessions to get help.
Okay, I did not understand anything in his class. Honestly, if you get him, CHANGE PROFESSORS, if you can. I ended up going to other professors' lectures to even understand the content. Overall, I say, just do your best, read, ask questions, visit him, etc. Just be aware how difficult chem151 really is. Its all difficult.
WORST TEACHER. Never again will I take one of his courses, I HIGHLY recommend ANY OTHER teacher.
Dr. Daly is the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not explain the material and by the time you get to the homework, you fail because you HAVE NOT learned a single thing. Don't recommend taking him, the Chemistry curriculum at U of A is so dumb anyway, it reflects in their teaching.
I have never taken such a hard class at the UA before in my life. Adam was incredibly dull in what he was teaching which made the lectures seem to last forever. He was willing to help you if you go to his office hours, but the tests are absolutely brutal. This class was the reason why I switched majors
Dr. Daly's section consistently scores the lowest on exams. He often skips over important topics that end up on exams and expects you to fill in the gaps where his teaching is insufficient. If you have the choice to take this class with any other instructor, I would advise you to do so. The only way to succeed in his class is to attend reviews.
go into office hours he is extremely helpful and explains things well read the book before lecture Daly is super cool, if you're looking for a professor to baby you through everything he isn't your guy. however he will push you to work hard and if you do you'll see the results
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. The tests are nothing like homework and they are on questions that he goes over once in class which are dull and hard to pay attention. The only way I escaped with a C this semester is because of the curve (hopefully) and the review sessions.
Dr. Daly is a solid choice for Chem 151. While he moves pretty fast through the lectures making some material confusing, this is just an unfortunate consequence of the chemical thinking curriculum. He makes the lectures interesting and keeps everyone engaged with discussion activities. He's great during office hours and is always willing to help!
Worst professor. Students do not like Dr. Daly. If you struggle with Chem, or do not have previous encounters with it. I highly suggest another professor. Only way to understand Daly is to have some sort of background with chem. Students teach more, once a student understands it, he moves on, assuming everyone gets it. Just find another professor.
If you are the type of person who doesn't pick up new material quickly or struggles with chem, I would not recommend Dr. Daly. I relied heavily on the textbook because it seemed to be the only way I would understand the material. He is a super nice guy, but for people who don't understand things the first time, I would not recomment him.
Chem overall is a very difficult class and daly doesn't make it any easier! I would recommend getting a different professor if possible based off of what my other friends in chem 151 say that have different teachers. No matter what it will still be a hard class.
CHEM151 is a very difficult course simply due to its content. Daly is not the clearest teacher I've ever had, but he cares a lot about his students & wants them to do the best and truly has their best intentions in mind. BUT the course requires a ton of work outside of class. Very difficult & must be made a priority. Book helpful but not mandatory.
There's a lot going on in the class. If you don't put he work in, you will not pass. Dr. Daly helps you succeed, but pushing you to work hard. He is very helpful during office hours.
Some people who says he's a bad teacher either didn't know the basics of chemistry or didn't put enough work into the course. If you work, it will pay off. And in this course real work is daily. Take him and work hard.
Dr. Daly isn't too bad but you really have to work very hard for a good grade in this class. The lectures drone on quite a bit and tests are difficult. Averages are usually around 60%. He really wants everyone to go to his optional classes which are practically necessary. He also sends about 2-3 emails a day which gets annoying.
He's not for the faint at heart. Chem is hard and covers A LOT of material, no teacher can cover everything in lectures, you must read the textbook. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS EVERY WEEK! The more you are exposed to the material, the better it'll stick in your head. Find a study buddy in your class to work through problems with. You have to work hard!!
Worst professor ever. Skips important material. Difficult to follow in class. If you have never had exposure to chem prior to this class, do not take him. A lot of my friends and I barely passed, thanks to the curve. Might I add, I took chem in high school.
He is an average professor at best. He tends to skip over a lot of material in class or doesn't explain the material enough that is on the exam, but the homework covers it, usually. Go to the exam reviews for the exams those are helpful. A major thing that helped me was the chem tutor room (202); they help a lot on homework or explaining topics.
Chem 152 is naturally a difficult class but Daly tends to make it seem harder than the other professors will. He is very helpful in office hours but if your schedule conflicts and you cannot make it to the times he has, you will not understand anything when the test comes. You have to work really hard for a B and hope for a miracle for an A
He's not a bad professor like people say he is. He genuinely cares about your success in the class. The material IS difficult, but he offers many resources for you to seek help if you need it. He also goes out of his way to make videos for you in which he goes over example problems step-by-step. He cracks funny jokes in class, too. Great professor.
Daly was not a good teacher. He wastes so much time going off on tangents unrelated to the material and it just confuses the lecture so by the time he's done with his tangent you have no idea what he was originally talking about and end up learning maybe 15% of what you were supposed to.
Daly is an amazing teacher, he loves to joke around in class to make the lecture a little more enjoyable. I loved taking his class and I learned so much. Honestly, if you care about the class, go to office hours, and give the slightest effort you will be fine in the class. He's a great person and provides everyone with lots of opportunities.
Chem 152 is a hard class in general, and the averages are shown to be very low across all professors. Daly does a great job of teaching, and if you are to go into office hours and show interest he will make sure to help you out as much as he can. Definitely recommend!
Daly was unhelpful in teaching the material for this class. Gen chem is overall one of the most difficult classes I have ever had to take yet he makes the material much harder to understand. His handwriting is poor and hard to read. He is also condescending during lecture and gives daily quizzes as participation. Daly is known to be a hard prof!
Though some people love Dr. Daly, he just didn't work for me. Although he's a nice guy, I found his lectures hard to follow and sometimes even disorganized. In fact, I learned more from reading the textbook, using Google, and watching YouTube tutorials than attending the actual lecture. If you need chemistry, I recommend taking Dr. Graham.
I did not enjoy Adam Daly at all, he is condescending in class and overall not very effective at teaching. I had work and other classes during his office hours and he was not very helpful during the rare times that I could make it. I would say Chegg Study was a better teacher than he was. Do not take his class.
This class is difficult. Between the actual content difficulty and the confusing professor, it hurt my brain. It was easier just teaching the subject matter to myself and going to class for the participation points. The homework is really helpful.
Chem 151 and 152 are not easy. You are required to study hard and keep practicing the course material. Adam himself wasn't bad as u may assume. I took this class with Amy graham, and I think they both are in the same level of teaching. I definitely learned a lot from him. He's very underrated.
Lecture is the worst place to take notes, he goes through slides very fast so I recommend to at least read the book (and take notes). SI Sessions and Workshops aren't useful. Find friends in the same lecture to help you and study together. Best professor for Chem 151 is Hidalgo or Graham.
This was the worst class I've taken at the UofA. It is meant to be a "weed-out class" for chemistry, so the material is difficult. On top of that, Daly goes through slides quickly and not thoroughly. Be ready to put in lots of hours outside of class to read the book and go to SI, simply to have a basic understanding of the material.
Tough class, have to learn on your own, Good luck
Daly seems like he would be a good professor if he wasn't restrained by the unfortunate chemical thinking curriculum. If you don't have a strong (and I mean STRONG) chemistry background you're in for a lot of work. Test averages are around 68-69% which is apparently good for the course (??). Chem 151 is a weed-out class for engineering.
Daly is fine. Definitely read before class and do all the homework you can. Get a headstart on the reading as soon as you can. It's not a big deal if you work hard.
Awful professor. Won't recommend him to anyone. Ever.
This class requires a good amount of work in order to have success. Daly cares about the success of students that actually try/care. He posts a lot of reviews and videos for the tests that help immensely. If I had to take this class again, I would choose Daly. I found his teaching method to be effective and easy to follow.
Very knowledgeable professor. You can tell that he knows his stuff but there are plenty of other chemistry professors at the UA that can help you transition into this difficult course, especially if you're a freshman. Dr. Daly would be a great professor if you were an upperclassmen, but as a freshman he can seem a bit intimidating.
Lectures never helped me understand anything, Daly tends to ramble on about topics making it even more confusing to comprehend. The only things that actually taught me was the sapling homework and the textbook (sorta). Good luck.
As an introduction to chemistry this is a very tough class that requires a lot of extra work outside of class if you want to succeed (office hours, tutor room, SI Sessions, etc) Daly is tough to understand during lecture because he goes off on tangents and isn't clear on certain concepts so read the book and go to other teachers office hours!!
I hate chemistry. I've had to retake chem151 because it was so difficult for me, but Professor Daly truly wants you to learn. He does everything, EVERYTHING he can to make chemistry easier for you. He fluctuates office hours, will go to private study groups, and emails back at all times of the day. Chemistry is hard, but Daly is the best for chem!
Great professor but goes to fast. He gives excellent feedback.
You could definitely find a better prof to take Chem 151 with, Daly's teaching method is strange and wasn't very helpful for me. You must read the textbook because he doesn't go very in-depth with explanations.
Literally the worst way to start college. I got a C and I am not a C student. Beware. There are many, many better profs here at U of A.
He really cares about his student. if you get confused just go to the office hour he is really helpful. Exams might be hard but doing the homework by yourself will really prepare you for the exams.
He is a bad teacher. watch him write on the board for 75 minutes straight. doesnt conceptualize anything you are learning. helpful in office hours. especially when he puts random stuff that he didnt teach on the hw. be wary of multiple mistakes during lecture and hw keys. he cares about studntsBUTteaches as if they actually read the bookandhavePHDs
The material gone over the lectures really matters, but he explains everything in detail if you have questions. He gives daily quizzes that test over the material, they count for participation and the actual grade on the quizzes counts. Office hours are extremely helpful. Posts videos going over homework/test content
Chemistry in general is a hard class, but he does a decent job at teaching in lectures. Reading the book is mandatory if you want a solid A or B, some things show up on exams he didnt necessarily go over in class. Lab is the real thing to worry about
Daly was a great teacher. This class requires a lot of work but if you put in the time you can pass. Adam is a great professor and really helps you understand the material. He is so approachable and go to office hours and SI they help so much. This class is not impossible contrary to what everyone says.
Great teacher
Chem is difficult class in general. But go to office hours and prove you are a good student and Dr. Daly will help you.
Dr. Daly was really helpful. He really cares about students. Chem 152 is a tough class and he wanted us to success. Under pop quiz section, he added a lot more prep quizzes which you can take unlimited times until you get it all correct. Each exams he provided tons of materials for you to review. The SI sessions and office hours are helpful.
Chem152 is one of the hardest classes Ive ever took. If you put the time and hard work on you can pass but if you dont you will struggle. His lectures are very informative and he uses graphics and animations to help you understand content. He is available outside of class frequesntly and SI sessions are held all the time. The help is there.
I had to retake CHM 151. Chemistry is tough! Going to Dr. Daly's office hours was extremely helpful. After taking pop quizzes or daily activity problems, he would post explanations which were great study tools. He pretty much does all he can for us to be successful and it is up to us to put in the work if we want to succeed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Avoid at all costs. His way of teaching is complicated and not simple at all. He wants you to think the material is hard. He is into the whole grade deflation thing. He intentionally puts tricky, never seen before questions on exams. He doesn't care about students. 24% of class got Ds. 16% got Fs. Horrible at teaching.
Having been at the U of A for 4 years now I can say confidently that Dr. Daly is one of the more caring professors I have encountered at the U of A. He posts quiz questions a day in advance to give students the opportunity to get maximum points. He is also a good teacher, with a sense of humor to keep lectures less boring.
Daly was the only option for chem 152 this semester, so I was afraid when I saw his reviews on here. BUT, he gives you so many chances to get a good grade, along with so many practice materials! The material is difficult but if you put in the work you can get a good grade. Dont be afraid to ask him questions!! :)
Dr. Daly isn't as terrible as people make him out to be, but I do understand the frustration. You HAVE to pay attention to everything he says during lectures because he gives really useful tips but doesn't emphasize the importance of it. Offers a lot of outside resources so use them! Only used the textbook for homework points. DON'T SKIP CLASS!!!
would waste 30 minutes of a 50 minute lecture awkwardly arguing with other students in the class. He was extremely vague in teaching brand new, hard math topics. Spoke as if we had seen/learned the material before when this class is supposed to be the first time seeing the material. Super rude teacher and super hard class.
He was a pretty awesome professor. He was always there for his students and had very clear lectures. He never turnes down a question and took his time to make everything was clear. I'm not that great at chemistry, but Dr. Daly made it a little more bearable.
He makes the concepts he teaches over complicated. He gets too frustrated too easily. He does not have a realistic view on what he should test people on while he expects you to know more than what is taught.
Professor Daly was a great teacher. I am not the best a chemistry and he explained everything so you could understand it. He also gave lots of examples to practice in class as well as posting weekly office hours to watch. The course itself is difficult and takes effort but if you go to class and pay attention you will easily pass.
Dr. Daly is a wonderful professor of an intimidating, demanding subject. He really cares about his students, and he breaks down chemistry, so novices can easily understand. Dr. Daly is unflappable! His office hours and Panopto videos are key to doing well.
Daly can get a bad rep just because chem is a difficult subject, but he's honestly not that bad. You have to read on your own and he does go on tangents in lecture sometimes, but he's also super helpful and accommodating. He explains concepts very well in test review and he gave extra credit on the final. He also gives very little (and easy) hw.
I withdrew from this class. I wish I hadn't. He went out of his way to be available for me, and the homework was very easy. The exams were the difficult part. SI sessions, Panopto videos, and office hours are absolutely crucial to doing well in the class.
This was the first college Chem class I had ever taken and Dr. Daly did an AMAZING job and deserves the best reputation in his ability to explain and conceptualize this rather difficult information
CHEM151 is not an easy class. However, Dr. Daly has so much patience which I think is key for an educator. I never felt like any question was too dumb to ask in his class. His ability to break down the material into elementary terms really helped my learning. The exams and homework were fair. Be prepared to put in work for your grade...
A lot of the ratings on here are extremely harsh. I took his class over the summer, so it was 5 weeks instead of 16 weeks and I will still able to make an A. As long as you put in the work, take his practice exams, and actually study... you will be fine. I really enjoyed his lectures as well, you can tell he is passionate about the subject.
Chemistry is a hard topic regardless of the professor, but Dr. Daly provide several additional resources and frequently held office hours in an attempt to help everyone as best as possible. If you are looking for an easy class this isn't but if you are willing to put the effort in it is a great class.
Adam Daly is a kind, patient, intelligent person who is asked to teach a super weird curriculum in a department known for being incredibly unforgiving. Chem at UA is miserable, but he's the best teacher they've got. He loves his subject and he's willing to help you if you go through the right avenues. He shines as a Zoom educator.
Dr. Daly is a great teacher even though he teaches one of the hardest classes. He clearly lays out what you need to do to pass and encourages you to seek help if you need it and not be ashamed. He's also very accommodating and a nice guy. But if you seriously don't know anything about basic chem I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Pretty decent at teaching, but very sassy and angry when he has to repeat himself or a student asks a question.
Tests you on things one section covered but the other did not. Not accessible after class. And kind of had an attitude. Couldn't ask for help if you couldn't make office hours. I got a bad vibe, but that could just be me.
10/10 would not recommend. I would have no idea what he was talking about in class, then look at the textbook and realize I already knew this from high school but he's so horrible at teaching I did not even make the connection that that was what he was talking about. Also, condescending when people ask question and laughed at them on occasion.
Dr. Daly cares a lot about his students and their success, but I do not think he teaches chemistry in a way that we can understand. He's almost too nice and would spend over half of the class answering questions that should have been left for office hours. I only did well on tests past the midterm because I began to attend another prof's lectures.
Took Daly for chem 151, I did terrible in the class and struggled a lot. People have passed with an A so it is possible. Outside knowledge of chemistry helps. Daly confuses others when he teaches and can be impatient in lecture, but great in office hours. Book, lecture and help from others are best ways to pass. Participation graded thru activity.
Doesn't understand that students have different levels of understanding. I am not a chemistry person and have never done well, but when I ask questions, he is condescending. He's okay but would not prefer him. I have heard a lot of other complaints about his exam preps never being similar to the actual exam, which is very accurate.
Daly is a good guy and knows his stuff. He teaches the class well and is willing to help you if you just shoot him an email. It is a tough class though. Make sure you read the section BEFORE the lecture. Take pictures of the questions on reviews and quizzes as the tests almost always have them on there.
Chemistry is a challenging subject; if you don't study, you won't pass. I thought Professor Daly did an excellent job preparing us for exams by providing us with practice problems, holding helpful office hours, and being accessible through email/Piazza. He was always respectful and understanding of circumstances. Overall, excellent professor!
Do not take this class during the summer. Daly is a great CHEMIST but a horrible teacher. I never understood what was happening in class and relied on tutors/the TAs/the textbook to learn. He's also very condescending- I've seen him get angry at students for really minor, non-disruptive stuff. He assumes a lot of knowledge of chem too.
Daly is not the best professor at all, he grades harshly, doesn't answer questions well and is difficult to reach. I took his 5 week summer course for 151. If you can take another prof, do it.
Dr. Daly is really kind and tries to be understanding but he is just not my kind of professor (I also took a 3 week online summer course that was very rudimentary). I did not find his lectures to be engaging or more helpful than just reading his slides and taking notes. And if your looking for anything faster pace, you might want a different prof.
He has a ton of pop quizzes every week, but they arent really pop quizzes. His way of explaining things are just examples. Read the textbook If you want to pass. He goes on tangents a lot.
Wastes a ton of time during class trying to get people to study instead of actually going over the material. The tests are extremely difficult but that's more due to his teaching than it being a chem class
Dr. Daly does not deserve the low rating he has on this website. He genuinely cares about the success of his students. His lectures are interesting, and he describes difficult concepts with grace. There is a lot of homework in this course so be prepared for that.
A majority of these reviews don't realize that yes, a science heavy course is going to require effort put forth outside of class. Daly always tells students that in order to be successful in this course, read the textbook, attend SI sessions or come in for office hours. If you don't like this, college is going to be difficult for you.
Boring- but it's intro to chem so you can't expect too much. Not as sassy as people say. Very easy and slow pace if you've taken chem before. If not, read the textbook ahead of class and you should be fine. There was a zoom option my year but personally I wouldn't do it, it'd be too easy to get into the habit and not pay attention.
The tests are really hard b/c he never goes over the material that ends up on the test. He goes over a ton of material in every class but none of it seems to actually help. He likes to lecture about how we will not do well in the class if we don't study but never says how to study. We had 2 class averages of 50% & never realizes that it's his fault
The reviews for exams do not match up to what is actually on the exams. Other professor's classes had way better class averages on exams compared to the averages in Daly's.
Daly was an ok prof. His lectures usually didn't explain things well, and you have to do outside work before class to understand what he is teaching. The exams were difficult, and require a lot of studying to do well. However, the exam reviews were pretty helpful in studying for the exams. If you want to do well, you have to put in extra work.
This class no matter what professor you have will be tough. Out of your options for a professor for chemistry 151 at arizona I would recommend him. His lectures can be boring but as long as you pay attention and apply yourself you will be fine.
This is not a hard class when it comes to what is taught. The problem is, is that it is poorly taught. You can go into an exam after studying for hours and you will still get a C. On one of the tests this year, there was information on it that we weren't taught. Just a very frustrating class to be in if you are good at chemistry.
taught myself the whole class. finished with a 79.7, and no, he did not round up to a B. no extra help, confused me more in office hours. never responded to my emails. if you want an A, be ready to study
His exams are really hard and the reviews are nothing like the exams. His lectures can be boring and a lot of times he goes over material fast cause he thinks everyone already knows the basics but more than half the class was always confused.
Dr. Daly is a great guy and a good prof. Easily accessible outside of class and willing to work with students. Lectures can be dry but he will throw in a joke or two. The material is hard and the tests are harder, but he does not set any of that. He only writes 1 of the 4 tests you will take and it was one of the easier ones. SI is key to succeed.
You can tell Professor Daly is really smart and has good intentions, but the way this class is taught makes it very difficult to learn gen chem. The lectures are very long, bland, and it's hard to gauge what you really need to know. The aspect of this class I did enjoy was the "pop quizzes" which helped a lot for review before exams.
Dr Daly is a nice guy but he really just doesnt test us on the material he teaches. I got an A in this class because with spent an extensive amount of time outside of class teaching myself the material and I would still get Cs on most of the tests where the averages were 50s. He would brag about his low test averages take another teacher if u can
Dr. Daly took a class that was designed for student success and then made it impossible for students to succeed. Lectures the importance of studying but has no useful tips on how to study for class, what to study for exams, or how to improve understanding. On-topic lectures are incomprehensible and exams are near impossible to pass. Do not take!
tough
Adam is a great teacher and an nice guy, but this course is going to be difficult and requires a lot of effort. I would say the best advice I can give is to go to every class, take good notes, and prepare for exam 3. If you cant make it to class then watch the recordings he posts on D2L. Thinktank is a necessity!
At first I liked this professor, but I started getting a bad feeling about him after he seemed annoyed by me asking a question about the lab that is part of the class. The things he teaches in class and the preparatory quizzes he gives do not help with the tests. It does not feel like he gives us all the information needed to succeed.
Something I experienced and most other students in his class experienced was walking out of the class more confused about the material than walking in. The tests are difficult and no matter how well you explain your FRQ answers, you will get many points taken off even for correct explanations.
really good professor, those complaining simply didn't put the work in
The first half of the semester is fine if you go to the lectures and do all the pop quizzes. The second half of the semester is crazy, where the assignments get harder, and the feedback and lessons get shorter. The last exam and part of the final are on O chem, which is not explained well.
Dr Daly is not awful he just doesnt know how to present knowledge to people who arent chem majors. He also is impatient and gets upset with questions I took the summer class and went to tutoring 3 hours everyday and Im getting a C so its hard. His tests are crazy hard and he tests you on stuff you learn the same day
This guy does not explain anything well. The only way I understand the material is through the TAs or from spending hours reading the textbook myself. He is a nice guy, but absolutely sucks at teaching.
This man is actually the worst teacher I've ever had. He should be fired. I have never heard a good thing about this man. Does not teach. He brags about how low the test averages are. You can't even hear his microphone. He is a flop and does not care about his students. If you have to change your whole schedule to avoid taking Daly's class, do it.
he does not clarify the topics that he is teaching. it's a very learn-on-your-own type of class and professor. Very difficult and he doesn't like to answer very many questions or respond to emails.
all the 1 ratings are people who arn't use to working hard. There are better professors tho so beware.
Dr. Daly is a very smart man, however he is lacking in his teaching abilities. I almost never feel prepared for the tests and find myself having to teach myself the lectures he is paid to teach us. I had him for 152 as well and it was worse in 152. I highly do not recommend.
Daly is too advanced for this class when he instructs he tends to go off into tangents and does not quite get the point across. I have had to go to many review sessions to try to understand the content and even when I seek the help I need the tests are 10x harder than the actual lesson.
He has a friendly personality, but expect students to pass his class with flying colors when the subjects that he teaches aren't 100% taught. Everything about this class is self-taught ether reading the book or working with the TA's. It doesn't matter if you work hard or not students still struggle in his class.
Without a chemistry background, you are pretty much going to need to teach yourself the material. Even as an entry level chem class, Daly expects his students to have a very good understanding of all materials with little to no explanations.
Last year as well as high school, I was getting straight A's with a couple B's here and there. Never would I ever have thought that I would be getting a D. He is the absolute worst professor. His exams have nothing to do with what is being taught in class. There are always pop quizzes which are usually fine, but he just sucks at teaching. DONT TAKE
I changed my entire semester classes the following year to avoid having him at all cost. He may be knowledgable about chemistry but overall he is just a bad teacher. He makes things more confusing than they have to be and his explanations are worded so he seems intellectual but not so we understand. Had to teach myself using YouTube and SI sessions
Professor is a cool guy but terrible teacher, the first 2 exams are more than 12% of youre final grade, which is very odd since each exam is literally a week and a half apart, no feedback is ever given. Final exams are multiple choice and written but you will never go over expectations for the written portion which is a huge % of the test ):
Daly is an understanding and nice guy. His in class lectures are sometimes confusing, but if you go to his office hours he explains the topics better. You have to put in some extra work for this class compared to others.
I think the rating for Daly depends on the kind of learner you are. Attendance is taken by top hat questions and these add up at the end of the year and can make or break your grade. Homework is 3-4 times a week, it is good for the people that need continuous practice. The in person exams are very hard, and have free response questions.
Daly tried a new thing this year where he grades the follow up questions to the readings and they were due the morning before class. Since this was so new I think it was hard for people to remember to do them. He also is very rude when you ask questions or if you say you don't understand content. Overall I passed because of the SI sessions.
You have access to zoom meetings and be present in class online. There are pop quizzes almost every week. Test every two weeks and exam every month. He mostly just lectured by reading the slides and briefly explained what he taught. You have to rely on teaching yourself for the difficult parts.
people seem to think he's not a great professor but that's not the case. He tries to help the students and gives them countless opportunities to support and connect with them. his lectures are in-depth and well-explained but you'll need to put in the effort if you want a good grade.
daly was a nice guy in general, but i really struggled with his teaching style. the majority of what i learned in this class was from my classmates and SI sessions. im normally a very good student and i got a B in this class even after going to 20+ hours of SI sessions. if you're already knowledgeable in chem you'll probably be fine...
Professor Daly's lectures are quite unclear most the time. Reading the textbook is absolutely necessary or else the concepts won't be understood. For me, I took AP Chemistry in high school so I had a baseline understanding of the concepts, but without that I do not think I would have been able to receive a B in the course.
I don't think he was that bad tbh. He's like good at explaining things but he does it in a kind of weird way where it's hard to pay attention I can't explain it. It feels like he should be teaching a higher level course. He usually explains only one or a few concepts from the tophat homework/textbook so if you do the other hw you should be good.
If you are a visual learner I would not recommend this course. I found the way he explained things to be very difficult to understand. It seemed like he skipped over a lot of important details when explaining topics and his lecture slides didn't make sense without verbal explanation.
If you pay attention and take notes you will be fine. The hardest part of this class is the lab. Chemistry is a tough course, but Dr. Daly does a great job explaining tough concepts and answering questions and provides lots of practice. I think most of the bad reviews are coming from people that didn't put in the effort to get a good grade.
This class is hard. Dr. Daly is a good professor who will demand the best of you. This semester was hard, but I learned a lot in his class, not only about chemistry but about how to face the university path. If you want someone who fits your level and doesn't bother you to leave your confort zone, that's not Dr. Daly.
I really enjoyed professor Daly class. If you work and follow his suggestions, you will be fine.
I was able to pass this class with an A+ from teaching myself outside of class, most of the people here giving bad reviews expected to know everything in the lecture alone. Daly warns us how much work is required to pass this class. He is not the best teacher but he isn't the worst. Take him if you can teach yourself.
Daly is a good teacher, you HAVE to attend every lecture and pay attention or you will fall behind. Daly is pretty fast-paced and tends to move on very quickly.
Daly may seem like a tough teacher upon meeting him, however as the semester goes on he truly does care for his students. If you put effort into the class and utilize resources such as office hours and SI sessions, you can easily be successful. Daly is willing to be flexible and help you if you ask. At the end of the semester, he drops a lot.
I would recommend taking another professor for this course. There is sometimes more than one quiz per week, and there is quite a bit of homework assigned before each lecture, as well as a weekly homework. It is likely you will be teaching yourself the content or needing to use online resources.
Daly is an awful instructor hes incredibly harsh when grading even regular assignments such as tophat homework, all other instructors give you the chance to answer a question twice Daly prefers you regurgitate information he told you during lecture in tophat not to mention all readings from tophat now have a grade attached and lecture is useless
Daly goes on tangents while teaching a large class and leaves large concepts unexplored for the students to individually research for the price one is expected to pay for the semester one would expect a decent professor and not a lazy one who lacks even the most basic teaching skills such as working through 1 problem with the class awful teacher
Not a good class
This professor doesn't explain thing well.
Adam Daly is a precious man! he may not be the most eloquent instructor and he makes everything a "story" but he is very caring to his students and understanding of your needs. If you want to hear the many "stories" of chemistry his class is a class for you! #dontbullydaly #thesehurthisfeelings #dalyisasensitiveguy
Dr. Daly is a significantly better professor than people make him out to be. He's a very sincere man and his lectures are very clear and he gives many opportunities to succeed. He has granted me multiple extensions on quizzes and homework and he responds to emails almost instantly. Ignore the negative reviews from 151 students and you'll do fine.
All these students leaving bad reviews on Professor Daly need to grow up. He is not a bad teacher, you are a bad student. If you actually attend his lectures, do the homework, and read the readings, you won't find this class difficult to pass. He is a fine professor and does his job properly. Watching his virtual office hours also helps a lot.
Chemistry is generally very difficult, and Dr. Daly's class is mostly just example problems and reading the textbook before the lecture to learn it(graded). My advice is do the SI sessions the entire semester, start at the very first one but Dr. Daly tries really hard to help and give direction to meet everyone where they are at.
Professor is just okay. Pretty much you are expected to learn the content solely from the readings (and if you attend outside tutoring sessions), and I just didn't find this helpful at all. I just didn't feel like there was much learning done in the classroom. The "lecture" is pretty much just practice problems all class.
He provides extra credit enough to bump your grade by 2% by attending SI sessions and complete extra credit throughout the semester. 1 full page of a cheat sheet is allowed per exam with 4 being allowed on the final exam. These cheat sheets are what saved me.
I took him last year, and looking back I'm not sure if it was me, being Gen Chem, him, or something else, but that class + lab for me was a fat mess. I already had a background in Chem so the content wasn't the problem, I think it was more that I didn't really click with his teaching style. If you're organized and have a system, you'll do fine.
Overall not bad. Not very good lectures but plenty of resources such as si to still be successful. He can be sassy somedays but most days will do his best to help you if you have any questions. Class setup is very organized and grading is very fair. If you work hard you will do fine.
Dr. Daly is an amazing professor and you'll do well if you put in effort. Textbook homework assignments before each class, weekly homework/pop quizzes, and lots of exams/exam prep. AP Chemistry provides a solid foundation for this course. Some O-Chem involved. Labs can be hit-or-miss. The final exam is weighted 7-8%. Do your best and you'll pass!
Dr. Daly is genuine, approachable and wants his students to succeed. His lectures are difficult to follow so use his office hours and SI sessions which can earn you extra credit. He writes the solutions out before projecting it on the screen so I had to take pictures in order to keep up. We were allowed one cheat sheet (back and front) for exams.
This class is impossible without SI sessions. The professor is very bad at explaining and lecturing. Even the homework videos that are meant to help just confuse me even more. I would recommend another professor.
He's a great professor that gives helpful lectures. There is quite a bit of homework and quizzes/tests, but they aren't too bad.
I really enjoyed Dr. Daly's teaching style, he is always available to answer questions, has plenty of office hours, and just by completing in class and homework assignments you get an automatic 80%, regardless of correctness. Be sure to go to office hours and SI sessions, but by doing that I understood the course great and did good in his class.
As far as required chemistry classes, I was preparing for a lot worse. Granted I've had bad experiences in high school, so I actually found this course easier than expected. It was definitely for the best to get help from TAs/friends in the class at times because lectures could get confusing. Labs were fun but be careful with the pre-lab quizzes.
Daly is really nice. I had him for CHEM151 lecture and lab because a TA dropped out and he replaced them. He made an effort to chat with students and know their names, and he was always avalible to help answer questions. You have to do the homework or you'll be really confused, but if you put in effort you can pass the class fairly easily.
Dr. Daly is a great professor. I had a different professor for Chem 151 and I struggled, but when I had Daly for 152 I was fine. His office hours are helpful, and he is respectful in class and office hours. I think he does an excellent job providing resources to prepare for the exams, and he offers a good amount of extra credit.
He explains things well but usually contradicts himself during his office hours and in class. Tests are well written and you will do good if you really study and go to SI sessions.
Professor Daly is an incredible instructor who genuinely cares about his students' success. Attending SI tutoring sessions and his office hours proved essential in mastering the course material. Thanks to his dedication and support, I had a fantastic learning experience and highly recommend his class to others.
He is a good teacher and does care. Loves to help his students and office hours are great. Handwriting is pretty rough though, hard to read sometimes.
Daly was a chill professor, he offers a whole load of extra credit in various different ways, and he doesn't actually take attendance, but he does have you following along in classroom slides
Daly's class has a steep learning curve, but attending SI sessions and office hours can make all the difference. The lecture materials can be confusing, so using resources like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook helps stay on top of the content.
Dr. Daly is a really funny and genuine guy, but as a teacher he is not the best. He lectures but doesn't really explain what he's talking through and kind of just expects you to understand how to do the problems. I have heard way better things about the other chem professors, so I wouldn't take Daly's class again.
First and foremost, Daly lacks the ability to teach, he is not prepared, he uses pre generated lectures, and does not work through problems, he just does them in advance and shows the final answer He is not a very pleasant person to be around, and asking questions is daunting because he gets easily annoyed. DO NOT TAKE CHEM W DALY!
Daly is the most condescending teacher I have had in my life. He makes it visible that he does not enjoy his job, and that is a shame being that students are paying thousands for an education. Along with his attitude problem, he also is not a great teacher. I do not know how he is still employed. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Daly is a super nice guy, however he is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not know how to teach, he skips over huge concepts, and class is an hour of him yapping about nothing and doing "practice" problems that are nothing like our exams or quizzes. Grades are rarely updated and he does not respond to emails.
DO NOT TAKE DR DALY!!! He is a horrible professor and doesn't teach well at all. He'll skip sections of the lectures and expect us to know the material. He'll also give us questions and then not go over how to do the problems. He also blames low test scores on us when he's a big part of the problem.
The recent poor reviews of Daly are a vast overstatement of his ability to teach. HE IS A GOOD PROFESSOR! He takes his time through his lectures and makes sure the concepts are taught well. If people would actually do the readings beforehand (like instructed) and paid attention to his lectures, maybe they would have a much better time ¯\(ツ)/¯
Daly would spend time in lecture instead of discussing the concepts discussing how important they are for the test. He would never give example problems comparable to the test and then rant to us about bad grades.
Wouldn't give us the adequate material for the test, you NEED to do the readings at home if you want to learn anything, this class was very hard, and if you fail one test, it's over for you.
As a UNIV teacher, Adam is very understanding and easy to work with. He's laidback so as long as you do your work and participate (you can miss two days), it's a fine class!
This is a test-heavy course and I often left class very confused and ended up having to go to SI sessions quite often to get a basic understanding of the material covered in class. Overall he offers a lot of extra credit which is helpful but if you do badly on the exams it is hard to keep a good grade in the class.
Daly wasn't helpful to me at all. His lectures were mostly him going on rants about the material, and never actually explaining why something was the way it was. I honestly learned more from the people I sat with during this class then the professor himself. Although he's a nice person, he clearly doesn't know how to properly explain the material.
If you must pick a chem class, go with either Hildalgo or Pereria. Daly was good, but he was bad at lecturing and was very poor at explaining the conceptual aspects of the class. Expect to learn the material on your own with Daly. He's a great man and very helpful, just not great at lecturing.
Honestly, Daly is a good professor but his teaching style might not be for everyone. Personally I find it super helpful that he uploads YouTube videos on how to do certain problems that will be covered on the exams. I got an A in this course by attending many SI sessions and his office hours and offers a lot of extra credit.
Daly is a really good professor if you show up to class and pay attention. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities and is very willing to help students. It is not hard to get an A in the class if you put in effort and actually do the work and show up. He is very generous and office hours help too!
For UNIV, he was so laidback with everything. Great professor who really cares about you and shows it in his feedback on the weekly assignment. I had many friends complain about their UNIV professors, but Daly made the course feel like a breeze.
professor daly was a kind professor who cared for students. I was aware that I did have to teach myself a few of the lessons due to his fast paced lectures and confusing explanations. Other than that, he gave a well amount of opportunities for extra credit like small assignments, office hours, SI sessions, etc. it is not as bad as it seems.
I enjoyed Dr. Dalys teaching style. I found that doing the pre-class reading and looking at the lecture slides really helped get a good understanding of what we were going to learn in class. He offers 1% for extra credit. Dr. Daly genuinely cares about his students, would definitely recommend!
He is cool
Do not take this class with this professor
Daly 2
This professor does not explain the majority of the work that he does in class. He leaves the student to figure out his problems and doesn't elaborate further. Then, on the homework, he gives you completely different problems that haven't been worked out in class. I would not recommend taking this professor. The online tests suck your grade dry.
Might as well just take the class online and go to tutor sessions. Lecture is basically just review/pop quiz of everything you had to read before class, except the textbook sucks and doesn't give you all necessary information. You have to go tutoring or office hours to succeed, he literally designed the class for that
Adam Daly is a professor that has wrong information on his slides throughout lectures and leaves his exams early while students are taking them. He confuses students because his lecture slides are wrong and expects them to find out how it's wrong on their own. It was night and day with the professor I had for Chem151 because Daly was incompetent.
Does not know how to teach content. Rushed the content to fit into his schedule. Left his own exam early. Does not respond to emails. Seems like a nice guy though.
I think Daly gets an unnecessary bad rep, i think he's a good professor who cares about explaining to his students, if the course is hard he's always there at office hours to explain and simplify things. I think his teaching method is different and it's mainly tophat notes, but once you get the hang of it and attend lectures, it's not bad at all
Daly has a strong passion for chemistry and is always ready to help, whether its in office hours, after class or even during class. The grade you get in this class is super dependent on how much work you put in, he has many different types of practice with homework and pop quizzes. And tons of review material for exams.
He does not care about students. I had Hildago last semester and she was amazing. It was a total 180 with him. I had a medical emergency in the middle of the semester and the deans email my teachers to explain and ask if i could make up assignments. Everyone said yes he said no. Slides are unclear and he doesn't want to help. -10/10
Yall trippin. This dude is the goat. Yes he expects highly of you but what professor wouldn't? He provides additional lecture videos, extra credit, many, many office hours, and he's a nice guy. Most hated chemistry professor for no reason. #IStandForDaly
He is very monotone and passive-aggressive. If people are talking, he stops talking, but we complain we cannot hear him because he holds the microphone so low. Lectures are so boring because of this, and he gives us questions before we learn the material.
He is very monotone and talks very slowly. However, he gives many extra credit opportunities and really helps students in his office hours. Homework and some type of test/quiz every week, however they are usually simple. The content of this class is relatively easy, and it just takes some extra work to understand some of the confusing lectures.
Daly does not explain things well, I leave his class more confused every time I go. I then have to go to SI where I then learn it, because the TAs do a 10x better job at teaching things that he does. I will say I appreciate that he offers extra credit on every unit and for attending SI/Office hours. I just wish I would actually learn in the lecture
His teaching style is pretty difficult. It is hard to understand the material but he does make some help videos. He does have office hours and the TAs hold tutoring hours as well. He moves very fast in lecture, not giving much detail to concepts as we are supposed to have an idea of them already (supposedly).
MY KINGGGG. I love this man. Anyone who says this class is difficult is not taking advantage of the AMPLE resources he provides. I will die on this hill.
Yeah, when you go to the lectures and focus on the material, you will get a good grade. His class is one of the most organized one I've ever had. The expectation is clear; he goes over tones of questions similar to the questions you'll see on the test. If you stick with the lectures and quizzes, you'll be totally fine, I guarantee.
This professor doesn't deserve all the hate he gets. People who say this class is too hard skip class or don't read what's required before the lecture. There are SO MANY resources out there to ensure your success. He is a funny and enthusiastic teacher, and there is no reason for him to hold your hand throughout the course!
A lot of people were saying dont take him. He doesnt even deserve the hate he gets. He is really caring and will help you IF you use the resources given. He gives so much extra credit it helps a lot. Go to all lectures, pay attention, go to SI and office hours, do the exam prep, put in real effort, and youll do good in the class.
Daly does offer good resources for help with office hours/SI that you get extra credit for attending. Deadlines are consistent so they're pretty easy to keep track of. He teaches incredibly fast in lecture and doesn't go over/review any material once he's talked about it, so it's easy to get confused if you don't understand something right away.
Dr. Daly offers a lot of extra credit, which basically saves my grade. I feel like his lectures aren't always easy to follow. But if you take notes before the lecture and then just listen to him and do practice problems, you should do fine. I also never went to SI and survived fine.
Each week it is either a mini quiz, test, or exam. For mini quizzes and tests they are taken online and given another opportunity to take again so the highest score will count. Exams you are allowed to have a sheet of paper. He even provides additional videos on concepts that will be on the quiz which majority of the time are on the tests.
He's really not that bad of a teacher. I did find it easy to get lost in lectures sometimes, but he provides many extra credit opportunities outside of class that will help you succeed. The main issue I had was that sometimes there was things on tests that he didn't teach us (or if he did, he glossed over so fast that I didn't notice he said it).
Honestly any chemistry class you take is going to be hard. The subjects for the most part was easier compared to chem 151. Daly was very straight to the point and easy to understand, sometimes his strategies were confusing, but it helped a lot going to SI sessions. He didn't really give us a lot to help with FRQ's though
He's not that bad, I think for all chemistry classes you should look back at videos and take notes rather than in class, and you'll get a good grade. In person exams are not that hard, online exam are harder. Like 3% in extra credit, helps a ton.
Be careful and pay attention
The class is tough and Daly does not do a great job teaching it. His lectures are not engaging and often unclear. Many of his assignments/assigned questions are flawed, and many times in class I would ask questions to the TA's and they would not have an answer for me. I was able to do well because I taught myself a lot of the content on my own.
I believe Daly gets too much hate. His lectures are a bit boring, but he explains thing quite well. He takes a slow methodical approach to the subject, so it you need the extra time to process then he is perfect. Although extra credit is only worth 1-2% IT MATTERS. Go to office hours or SI sessions, they are generally helpful. Bro is a sweet guy.
Daly has an interesting teaching style, though he seems nice. His explanations can be long and difficult to understand. Lots of exams (online and in person), quizzes, and homework. TopHat notes aren't very helpful. Know what teaching styles work best for you, before you choose him as a professor because it's hit or miss with his teaching style.
I found Daly to be a pretty good instructor! He definitely cares about his students and offered lots of extra credit, office hours, and genuinely wanted to make sure you understood the material. His lectures were a little slow, but definitely worth attending and helpful as well. Use SI and office hours and you'll do fine in this course!
He is actually a horrible professor. He yelled at us the begining of every lecture. He doesn't teach very well. Makes things more confusing than what they should be. You have to teach yourself the class. He gets mad if people don't understand what he is teaching too. A lot of extra credit though.
I'm going to be honest, I barely pulled out an A in this course. I had Daly for both 151 and 152. He is a very nice guy, but his teaching style just did not work for me and I ended up teaching myself a lot of the material. However, he makes it easy to succeed on exams as he provides tons of study materials and extra credit to boost your grade.
He isn't the best at teaching or answering questions. Sometimes he makes concepts very clear, other times complicates them to the point of being impossible to understand. He records all lectures and provides supplementary videos to help out. Also posts a decent amount of test prep before exams. There is a good amount of extra credit available.
Personally I enjoyed Dr. Daly's lectures overall. There were a few days where the content could have been explained more clearly, but again it's chemistry so you're not going to always understand it immediately. He has lots of practice work, tests, and quizzes he provided to allow for great exam preparation. Go to class, take notes, and work hard.
Daly is not given enough credit for his teaching. Honestly, I wase very afraid to take this course and had heard only bad things about it. I had taken 151 with Perera and though I did end it with a B I never felt like I had learned anything. Dalys class is very hard, it's chemistry, it had to be. If you put in the effort, you can succeed.
He will belittle you for asking a question during class when he wants questions
