Relatively few assignments, with the final being take home. The course is really just dipping your toes in, but he does a fairly good job at lecturing, powerpoint heavy. Most of the work is graded by TA's (in my experience).
I love this class!! Lectures are not mandatory, but I highly suggest you go because he makes everything extremely clear and to the point. There are only 3 assignments throughout the semester and everything is graded by the TA. However, I've had a great experience with my TA and feel confident in the class. Professor Dean is also very charismatic!
Eh. Dean's lectures made an interesting topic pretty boring most of the time and the group podcast is the dumbest assignment I've ever done. difficulty of class depends entirely on your TA; mine is great but roommate's is a hardo. 25% Essay, 20% discussion participation, 20% podcast, 35% take-home 3 essay final (this is a big pro IMO)
Professor Dean was indeed a bland lecturer. But what bothered me more was the lack of meaningful insight into the topics he discussed. He lacks passion and does not have any real world experience in the field to draw upon like many others GW Profs. It is an easy A .
Adam Dean was super nice! He's super excited about international relations which make the classes more interesting. Sit up close so you don't get distracted and you'll get a lot out of the lectures, he explains the concepts very well. Would 100% take again.
Adam is one of the most respected young international relations scholars. His class is easy: one essay, one group project, final (all graded by TA). The reading is largely unnecessary as long as you take good notes in lecture. If you're interested in international relations you'll love the class; if you're looking for an easy A, you'll love it too.
I went to maybe 5 of Adams lectures and ended with an A. Make sure to go to discussion but the grade is based only upon an initial paper, a discussion group project, attendance/participation in discussion, and your final (short answer questions). Easy A if you have some background in political theory and if not easy A if you read the readings.
Adam is definitely too smart to be teaching an intro course. Whisks through lectures which is sometimes stressful (esp if you didnt do the readings) Easy class format with 1 paper, group assignment and take home final. Grading is based on TAs but they were all chill. dean is rlly into IPE and makes you read his own material
Too many slides for per class! I never finished taking my notes before he switch to the next slide. He doesn't accept any question in his lectures. All the questions and discussed are in the discussion section, all the gradings are based on your TA. The professor had basically ZERO interaction with his students! Easy A tho.
I liked Dean's lectures, they were informative and interesting. He's a cool guy, just not that interested in teaching an entry-level course which is understandable. Grades are decided off of a written final (in essay form), a group podcast project, a paper, and participation + pop quizzes (which depends on your TA, mine was pretty strict).
this class is about international political THEORIES, not international relations so make sure that's what ur interested in. Really smart guy but lectures are not required at all. 4 pop reading quizzes, lowest gets dropped, and they're easy. 3 other assignments (a paper, a group project, and a take home final). My TA was chill & an easy grader.
Super, super knowledgeable. Way to smart to be teaching an introductory class. Lectures are interesting, especially if you are interested in International Politics. Readings are incredibly dense but trust me, do them. They will help with the essays (one critical analysis, one take-home final of 3 essays) Everything graded by TAs.
Fascinating course IF you aren't very familiar with the international system/theories and want to know more. Reading helps, but Adam is a great lecturer and covers just about everything you need to know. Can be kinda snappy if you ask him a question when he's lecturing.
Def would take again- he gives heavy and dense readings (50+ pages usually), and I would just read conclusions of the readings and go online for summaries to save time and to understand. If you dont do readings definitely go to Lectures and take good notes - he goes through slide VERY fast so sneak your laptop out and type or you wont get notes
Professor Dean is a great lecturer, so if you don't have time to read definitely go to the lectures because he explains everything. Everything is graded by the TA, and most are easy graders. There is one group project but almost everyone gets a good grade if they put some work in.
More about international theory than actual relations, and therefore it is VERY different from any other intro to International relations class. Everything is graded by TA, and if you get a strict one like me, the class becomes significantly harder, especially compared to other TA sections. Class grade is a gamble on how strict your TA is.
Adam Dean himself is fine. Very smart guy, super accomplished. My only thing I didn't like about lectures was that he sped through the notes and didn't allow computers, but other than that it was fine. However, my TA has made the class unbearable. Besides being pretentious, he is way too strict of a grader compared to the other TAs.
Overall a standard poli sci class--straightforward lectures, piles of readings. He's pretty good at making all resources available to his class, and there are about 40 pages of reading per week, which he covers well in lectures. The class is in three parts, and gets more challenging throughout the semester. Uses his own work for lectures sometimes.
This class is just like fine. It's boring but not awful. There's nothing to love about it but there's nothing to hate about it.
Professor is great and good lecturer. However everything is grade by TAs, where participation matters. So it really depends on how nice your TA is. There is a group podcast, take home midterm and take home final, and a paper. Lots of reading to do for the class, but don't have to do because he goes over it in lecture. Go to discussions!
It really is a class more on international theory rather than international politics. There are a lot of readings for each class, but he summarizes them in his lectures. Real work consisted of one paper, one group podcast project, and a final exam. Final grade is really dependent on how strict your TA for discussion is.
This is a bit of a risky class to grade. The class only consists of a few assignments which can be bad because if you mess up on one by accident your grade is screwed. The easiness of the class' grading also rests on your TA, so that's a big risk. As a professor himself though, he's great: good lecturer, very knowledgeable, you'll learn a lot.
There is a lot of reading that needs to be done, yet if you get lucky with your TA, they will go through the readings with you to make them more comprehensible. The lectures that are given by professor Dean are absolutely amazing. He is very knowledgable and knows how to present information easily
Just 3 big assignments, a paper, a group podcast, and a final. All pretty easy. Dean is an amazing lecturer, so you can just pay attention to those instead of the readings, or the opposite. The only thing that sucks is that discussion attendance is 25% of your grade.
Adam Dean is amazing. He's a great lecturer and goes over all the readings. But, I personally did not like the TA I had, which made all the difference since they are responsible for grading. I feel like that's a risk you'll have to take if you take his class. Good lecturers and a strict/ tough grading TA.
Dean is a really good lecturer, but attendance is very optional. Don't worry about the readings, he recaps all of them in class. Easy A, plus you learn a lot. Course is graded on a short paper, podcast, and 1500 word final. That's it.
Professor Dean is a great professor to take if you're trying to either do a prereq or if you're trying to find out if International Politics is your thing. Attendance isn't mandatory for lecture but is for discussion. The lectures are pretty much summaries of the readings. The lectures are very well structured, and so is the class in general.
Group project which is annoying. Don't really have to do the readings because he goes over the important stuff in the lectures. Posts all the lecture recordings online so you don't have to go to the lectures in person.
he's a really good lecturer and i genuinely enjoyed the content even tho i'm not that into IP. the assignments were kinda annoying tho like j get ready to put in the work (luckily there aren't very many). you don't have to come to class by any means as long as you make them up later w recordings. final is take home and u have a week.
I loved Prof. Dean's casual but informative lecture style. There is around 30-50 pages of reading each class, but his lectures do a great job explaining the reading in cased you missed it. There are no exams, just papers and a group podcast. My TA, Celina, was also amazing and she made discussion a lot more enjoyable.
Prof. Dean is a very good lecturer. They extremely easy to follow, even if you have not done the readings. The readings are fine, 30-50 pages, but if you don't do them the lectures definitely go over it. The work isn't hard, mostly just depends on your TA. Final is take home and you have a week to do it. Just show up and you'll be fine.
Great professor! The grade is only four things, and it depends on your TA (mine sucked); overall, great lectures and readings for an introduction to international politics! His lectures are very well structured and perfectly explain concepts and readings. GO TO THE DISCUSSION SECTION!!! Take home final as well
He's a very good professor and you don't have to attend class. However, your entire grade depends on your TA. If you have bad luck like me, you will spend weeks going back and forth with your TA on a ridiculous grade. Decent class though but I would not have taken it if I wasn't required to.
Dean is a great researcher, though not a great lecturer. His lectures are pretty boring and are just summaries of the readings. Either do the readings or come to class, not both. He is also not very accessible outside of class and regularly has guest lecturers (TA's) as he is traveling promoting his book.
Amazing lecturer but that's all he does, and he was frequently missing from class and had his TA's lecturing for various reasons. All grading is done by TA's, which is entirely based on participation in section, two projects, and a take-home final. Readings are usually ok (30-50 pages). Either go to class or do the readings, but don't do both.
Lectures are not mandatory, but TA sections are mandatory attendance. But you should try to attend class and do readings to understand. He will, though go through all of the readings. You are graded by Ta so highly dependent on your TA.
Arguably the worst lecturer I've had. Unstructured, rambling, too much content for a 50-minute lecture. TA does all grading. The class is fairly easy: graded by one paper, group podcast, discussion section attendance, and take-home final (essay). I left learning almost nothing because his lectures simply restated claims from the assigned readings.
You only learn via the lectures, which he doesn't post online. Feels like the TAs do more to teach the class than him. Doesn't take questions during class and the readings are dense. You will leave this class feeling unprepared for the next level of classes. Overall simple class, but you won't learn or enjoy it.
The grade is based on participation, an essay, a group podcast, and a final take-home exam. I felt like I learned nothing as my TA didn't hash lectures. His lectures are structured well, but he moves extremely fast to copy all the info down. He frequently canceled office hours on the day off and wasn't super helpful with guidance on assignments.
prof dean is a great lecturer, very knowledgable, and knows how to simplify info for an intro class. go to lecture! even if you cant complete the readings beforehand, he provides a great baseline for what you need to know. he goes a bit fast, so be prepared to scribble the most essential info on a slide before he moves on. overall a great class!
His lectures are clear and go over the readings, which is very helpful if you are not able to do them. It is a pretty easy class and would recommend if you are not a political science major. Grade is based on very few assignments.
Professor Dean was very good, lectures are fast-paced and readings are rarely needed. The professor asks you to take notes on paper but never stops people from taking them on the computer. I had Soo Lodge as my TA and she was really good, but a pretty stickler grader on the assignments throughout the class.
Very interesting lectures, but not much work given so be sure to do well in every assignment that you receive
The lectures are the non-mandatory only thing you need to go to our discussions, which can look very different. It depends a lot on your TA. There is a Podcast, Paper, and a final, which is a 3 question SAQ that was taken home.
It's a huge class, but Dean is a great lecturer and so easy to understand. He's clearly passionate and introduces his personal research as well, which is interesting. Only 3 assignments: a short paper, podcast group project, and short essay take home final. Easy class with some interesting discussions in section.
Such an awesome prof! Lectures were easy to follow and engaging, and I had a great TA (Greg), both of whom were accessible outside of class. Weekly readings (honestly semi-optional) and some light projects in discussion. Absolutely take Prof. Dean for PSC1003 (IA majors: take this instead of intro to IA it counts the same and is less reading)
Dr. Dean is a phenomenal political science professor. Lectures are a short 55 min, enjoyable and practical. Assigns lots of reading before class which is critical to fully understanding course material. Two essays and a podcast assignment made up my grade. I would jump at an opportunity to take another one of Dr. Deans courses.
Great professor and lectures!! Not a test based class and the readings are not necessary for the lectures because he goes over them in class. Grade heavily depends on your TA who will grade all your assignments.
Great professor for international politics, very engaging. class really depends on the TA you receive. a bad TA will make or break your grade. make friends in your discussion section for the group project or else it's random. only a couple assignments so have to do good on most if not all of them.
I definitely recommend this class with Dr. Dean. Kind and cool guy. Lectures are not boring, he gets to the point. A lot of reading but honestly you don't have to read it all since he covers it in the lecture. You're graded by your TA. Only 3 assignments: critical analysis essay, group podcast, and final take home essay.
Adam Dean is a knowledgeable professor and a good lecturer. That said, I found this class extremely boring, and it was a significant contributing factor in my decision to switch my major from political science to economics. There is a ton of reading, but to be honest you do not have to do any of it as long as you go to lecture.
Lectures kind of fast most days, but over all this was a fine class. Prof Dean is super knowledgeable and explains things well, but the readings he assigns can be a lot. I stopped doing the readings though and he just lectured about them so it was okay in the end. Graded on discussion attendance and participation, group project, a paper, and final.
Amazing lecturer. I think its a good idea to do the first couple readings but after that, most people stopped doing the readings including myself, and I did fine. Very interesting class, definitely don't skip the lectures.
Professor Dean is definetly knowledgable and his lectures are very interesting. There are a lot of dense readings however you don't necessarily have to read all of them in depth to do well. Lecture attendance is not mandatory (but I would go since he explains the readings), but discussion attendance is recorded and counts as a grade.
He probably never sees the work you complete for the course––much of the technicality aspects (assignments, grading, etc.) are overseen by the TA. But my god, Professor Dean knows how to lecture. He shows so much enthusiasm, and knows content like the back of his hand. I've never been bored in class. Distracted? Sure. My own fault. Bored, never.
I absolutely loved Professor Dean's class. You don't have to attend every lecture, but I would recommend since he does cover most of the readings during them. He is passionate about the subject and the only bad thing about this class was the discussion sections. My TA was not very helpful or kind, understanding of the material is preached there.
Taking this class with Dean! He covers the readings in the lectures so you don't have to do all of the readings (there are a lot). I was able to get through this class without reading everything and just taking notes from lectures. TAs do the grading so hopefully you get a good one (I did). Nice guy and is passionate about what he is teaching.
I highly recommend attending lecture as slides are not posted online. Discussion attendance is mandatory but no need to participate. Main thing is you're only graded by a few things so everyone really counts. Finally the most important thing is he says you're not allowed to use laptops to take notes but you are.
Dean is extremely smart and knowledgeable about what he teaches. The class can drag on at times but he brings in interesting concepts and also his own research. Pay attention in lectures and take detailed notes, also read most of the reading it helps a lot in the long run. Graded on group project, essay and final. Final is short essays open note.
Attendance was mandatory for the discussion section but not for the lectures. You will have 2 essays and one podcast project. He seemed like a nice guy and gave good lectures but moves a little fast on the slides. You are supposed to do the long readings for each class but you really don't have to since his lecture summarizes everything anyway.
Dean has fantastic lectures - he really knows the subject well, and the lectures are engaging. He assigns a lot of reading, but goes over it during lectures so really no need to read. However, all your work is graded by your TA, so it is important you get a good one - I did not. However, if you get a good TA, this should be an enjoyable class.
Professor Dean is a nice guy with good lectures. There is a paper, group podcast, and final exam. The TA's grade everything and are harsh with it (with not much reasoning). There are a lot of readings which can be dense, and discussion doesn't help, it is more trivial than actually reviewing important concepts. Professor Dean is good, but my TA...
Really nice guy, explains things well, grades are done by TAs and lectures are not mandatory but very helpful.
Only two papers and one group project throughout the semester. The prompts don't make sense and are overly complicated. section attendance was mandatory but lecture were not. I would definitely suggest going to lectures because course content isn't posted online. Only historical examples connected to theories, not current international relations.
Highly rec his class, especially for PoliSci & IA folks. Prof Dean was incredible! Every lecture was interesting and the way he speaks is so engaging. Readings can get heavy, if you can't get to them all at least show up to lectures as they cover most of the content. You're graded on 2 essays, a group podcast and participation.TAs grade everything!
Excellent lecturer, made slightly complex topics very easy to understand. That being said, extremely tough grader. Essays were graded very harshly
Excellent lecturer.
This is a great intro class and is only graded by a midterm, project, and final. Really the TA you have determines your grade, overall easy class.
Professor Dean teaches a great Intro to International Politics course. The topics of the course vary widely, and many of the lectures are very engaging. His course provides a good knowledge of international theories as well. Greg is the best TA, discussions are very beneficial.
Adam is an amazing guy and very obviously cares about all of his students and is passionate about what he is talking about. Your grade is dependent on your TA, but Adam's lectures are so organized and he's very knowledgeable. If you do the readings and attend lectures you will alright. Do. not. get. behind. on readings.
I loved prof dean. his lectures were filled with enthusiasm and passion. Hes js genuinely a caring guy who loves what he teaches. would love to take another class taught by him in the future.
Changed his take home final to in person this year. Had us memorize authors for the Final (there were a total of 52), and the TA was absolutely atrocious. Awful lecturer, would not take again.
Awful don't take this class studied for 20 hours and exam was impossible
Professor Dean is an amazing lecturer and clearly knows what he is teaching. There is required reading for every class, but just to his lectures and the discussions, and you'll be fine without reading. Everything is graded by the TAs, and most of the grade is from your midterm, a group project, and the final.
Gave really interesting lectures, TA grades everything but my TA rocked. New format because of AI: in class written midterm, group podcast project, in class final with short mcq and short essays. Lots of readings, sometimes super heavy, but you dont HAVE to do them if you take good notes in class, he covers what matters. loved this guy, but study.
Professor Dean is a great guy, and he clearly cares about his students. That being said, your grade is based on only four assignments (Final, Midterm, Group Podcast, and Participation). The final expects you to have memorized ~40 of the authors' names and theories from readings throughout the semester which is a bit absurd. Wouldn't recommend TBH.
Used to be a take home writing essay but now an in class exam essay graded on the same scale as others that had access to resources and you can't use so much as a class notes but if your apply to learn 30-45 theories, who discovered them, how their applied and what are the outcomes you'll be just fine. Very inconsiderate and unfair grading system.
Very unfair and inconsiderate grading system considering other class had an essay due as final while we had an in class essay final with no access to anything (including notes) but graded on the same scale. If you can remember 30-50 theories, who found them, what their methods are and what are the outcomes but if not runnnnnnnn
realistically, not a bad professor but exam structure is abysmal. be prepared to memorize 40+ authors for a final that you receive little to no guidance on, and also he will make you remain in the room even if you finish early.
Lectures are very organized & educational. Grades for the class are midterm, group project, final, and discussion attendance, so grade pretty much depends on TA. As long as you memorize the theories (7 total) & 3-4 readings for each unit (some can be very dense), you'll be perfectly fine for the final. Don't listen to everyone complaining about it.
Knowledgeable professor, his lectures are organized, laptops are not allowed in class, notes must be handwritten. Grades: midterm, group project, final, and discussion attendance; grades depend solely on the TA. Readings are extremely dense, and the final is difficult, having to memorize theories and the scholar' names with their methods/outcomes.
I loved this class. Professor Dean's lectures are clear and explain the readings well. There are a lot of readings, but you don't need to do all of them to succeed. My TA, Hannah, was amazing—go to discussion (it's 20% and very helpful). Exams are in-person essays, but you only need to know a few key topics. 10/10 recommend!
Professor Dean gives good lectures but there are a lot of readings that you have to remember. The midterm and especially the final are difficult because you have to remember the names and content of a lot of readings and then apply them in essays. The class does require a lot of effort but as long as you stay on top of things you should be fine.
Professor dean was really nice, but which TA you get matters the most. If you have the option, take Ryan's section (he was incredible). The readings really are important, and so are the lectures. I read 80-90% of the readings, and I think that was the perfect amount. Definitely read for the first and third units. Your TA is make or break.
