Very hard teacher, gives you a ton of work and an essay to do every week. Avoid if you want a blow off class, as you will be working your butt off in this class
Hoffman is the hardest Eng 105 teacher. And you are forced to sit in a circle
I took ENG 105&205 with Adam and truly enjoyed it. He really enjoys teaching and cares about his students. He's a tough teacher so if English isn't your thing, consider another teacher. He's tough, but reasonable. He won't give you more than you can handle but 105 is a 4 credit class. It's supposed to be a challenge. :)
Great teacher. I thought he taught really well and was fair at grading. Of course, I love English. He is very clear about what he wants in the papers, and he does not overload you (at least in 205) I have heard its different in 105, both form him and his students. Class is mandatory, and he hardly ever cancels. Miss two days and your grade can drop
Mr. Hoffman is a fantastic teacher. He will really prepare you for writing assignments in other classes and he is very approachable and there if you need help. There isn't a ton of homework other than writing papers, which he will sit down with you and help you out before you even turn one in. Great teacher! Best English teacher I've had. 105
The class is easy, Adam has reasonable expectations for a 100-level liberal studies class (like, go to class, be respectful, finish your work and you'll get an A). I have to make a comment about the obvious soapboxing. If you have any optimism regarding the USA at all prepare to argue with ill-informed 20-year-old liberals backed by a preachy prof.
Took the 3 week class. well organized! Expectations were clear. made it easy to budget time properly. ALLOT of tough reading one book was 77 pages in one day! test are open book, not timed, but are tedious.
The work schedule seemed like a lot at first. Professor Hoffman did an excellent job of modifying the schedule throughout the semester. The instructions for the assignments were clear, but I still asked him questions for further clarification. He was very helpful and provided the right answers for all of my questions. He takes time to help you out.
Great professor! I'm signed up for another one of his classes. He actually makes the material interesting!
This class and the professor were great. I would take this professor for other class if I needed them for sure. This class was very informational about the world around us. Anyone who takes this class will not be disappointed. Just do all your assigned work. Audio books help with some of the reading if you read along.
Like all of the class, except the amount of movies we had to watch. It was hard for me to remember where in a movie I had saw something or where a comment was spoken. If we have to watch so many movies then a transcript would be nice.
Professor Hoffman was genuine and honest. His tactful teaching methods helped me to realize self-reflection in new ways. He was realisitic, patient, and kind. The course was motivational, to approach society from a posture of asking myself how I can approach society with urgency, to support sustainability and oneness with nature.
Adam is very helpful, friendly, and he works with you if you are pulling your weight. The course was designed with a variety of learning materials (books, films, discussions, etc)
It is not an easy class, but very interesting. Professor is great and very helpful.
I don't need to be more specific.
I'd take the class again. There is a lot of "busy work" and a good amount of reading, but I took more from this class than I do from most.
This was a hard class. If you do the work you can get a good grade. Adam was always willing to answer my questions and clear in his expectations. His assignments were also laid out in an organized way.
Great Professor - Very clear instructions, easy assignments that actually catch your attention, and grades assignments quickly !
Adam is very helpful with any questions you have. Very responsive on his email and is always there to help. Somewhat of a tough grader, but he provides very useful feedback for future reference. On top of all of this... He's like super duper hot. So yes.. Highly recommended.
Class assignments were a little challenging but descriptive in the fact this teacher provided good instructions of what he wanted done.
There is a ton of work required for this class, but if you are consistent with it and study, you will do great. Adam is very helpful and gives good feedback.
Professor Hoffman was an exceptional professor. His course gets you thinking and may even change your perspective a little bit. While some of the materials used are clearly older, they are just as relevant today as they were when they were published. You will get the chance to dig deep and learn something new about yourself.
Adam Hoffman was crystal clear on all expectations from the beginning. That made it easier to deliver work that earned good grades.
This online class was reading and writing intensive, and worried me quite a bit at the beginning of the semester. But as long as you stay on top of your classwork, it isn't difficult to manage at all. Plus the material is interesting and engaging. Professor Hoffman is incredibly helpful, and very easy to work with. I would recommend this class!
This class made me really nervous at first when I read through the syllabus and the schedule for the semester but it wasn't bad at all and a lot of the work is just forming your own opinions on material. In addition the professor was extremely helpful and understanding when you needed his help.
Professor Hoffman has high expectations in that his course is demanding. I had taken another class of his so I was already prepared for this. Although he has high demands if you do the work you will mostly likely learn more then what he is teaching you as the coursework really makes you think about the bigger picture and yourself.
His quizzes are rough, but open book and force you to think. The reading and films for the course are diverse and enjoyable, things I would want to read and watch anyway. However, this was not an easy class. Great teacher though, fantastic power points, he put 100% into creating the class and trying to make it interesting.
This was an amazing class that pushed me to new levels of awareness about the world around me. It not only helped me develop as a student but it helped me to see the world and humanity in a different light.
The class is very interesting and even though it requires a lot of homework the teacher makes the material interesting.
Great class. Very demanding but the teacher is very respectful and provides good feedback. I would recommend the class to others.
There is a lot of material that has to be read, but every page is worth it. I will never look at technology in books or films the same way. I would love to take this class again just to talk more about it.
The work is very straight forward and the material is VERY interesting!!
Adam was very helpful and understanding when I would have a fluke on assignments.
Mr. Adam is very professional and a great instructor. He understands you and provides all his help in order to help you out. He is well educated and is clear at giving your assignments.
An interesting class for sure, would strongly recommend.
Seriously, this Professor is amazing and top notch. I wish I had had him earlier in my scholastic career, because I would have taken literally every class he teaches. Every step of the class is outlined so that the only way you miss something is if you just straight don't show up. Take his class. This teacher is a gold mine-seriously.
It is a great class but you will have to apply yourself. But if you are interested in technology it will make the class more interesting.
Adam Hoffman is upfront and honest about the amount of work that is required for the course. Before class even started he sent an email to let you know what was expected. He encouraged people not up for the challenge to change classes. This class made you rethink your current beliefs about technology and the humanistic qualities. good class.
Class was fun and inspirational. Much of the readings were unexpected, but flowed with the modules smoothly.
Professor Hoffman was always quick with a response to a question and very understanding. The variety of texts, articles, and films kept the course interesting and really moved along quickly. Enjoyable class - if you stay on track. The schedule was very helpful to refer to.
Prof. Hoffman provides interesting reading and film material for his HUM 371 course. If you read the books and pay attention while watching the films you will do well on the assignments, quizzes and discussion boards. All exams, midterm &final are open book& not timed! Great Course & Great professor!
Adam is kind and helpful. I loved this course because he is understanding and will clarify assignments. You are not left in the dark and he will push you along the course . This course was unusual, but Adam makes it interesting by watching movies. Although it was a fast paced class, it is not unmanageable. Adam roots you on the whole way!
Plan on a great deal of reading and detail in the assignment and discussion questions. You get out of it what you put into it.
This was a great, fast-paced course. Prepare to read, write, and discuss the quickly advancing technological world! Great instruction throughout the course; assignment schedule and expectations were clear, quick responses from instructor to any questions, and quick turnaround for grades/feedback on assignments.
Professor Hoffman is a good and fair teacher. It is a very interesting class with lots of work to complete, but the assignments are based upon the review of awesome content.
Adam was willing to answer any questions that you had. Gets back to you very quickly. Each week there was a film, discussion or assignment, and reading involved. There were 5 quizzes and 2 Exams. Quizzes and Exams are based on Power-Points, films, readings, and homework. This class gets you thinking about the future. Use your time carefully!
Course materials cover a great selection of movies and books. The class will definitely make you think and force you to analyze the material.
The overall class structure is nice. Definitely be expected to read. The course is heavy in reading material. You will need to devote more than the typical time to this course. I really loved that we were required to watch movies.
The topics were interesting, and I particularly enjoyed the level of flexibility built in to the assignments. For example, we often had a choice of material from which to chose to base our assignments on. This made the course capable of being personalized to the student. Professor Hoffman was very helpful and forgiving in a time of crisis.
Professor Hoffman was the most helpful professor I have ever had! He gives very specific requirements for every discussion/assignment that make it super easy to get full points for everything! Just follow instructions, read the material, and watch the many amazing science fiction movies in this class, and you will get an A! I loved this class!!!!
I loved this class I just wish he had another class I could take. You have to do the work to pass, you can't wait until the last minute to do things. There is a lot of reading and movies to watch. The Prof is understanding and reasonable, if you need help just ask. Grammar counts in this class so reread assignments before tuning them in.
I appreciated Hoffman's precise weekly schedule. He answered questions that I had promptly and provided detailed Powerpoints to clarify. There is a lot of reading, but it was from very interesting fictitious chapter books, not textbooks.
What a FANTASTIC professor! One of the most thorough and detailed teachers I've ever experienced. Very tough grader but if you follow directions you'll be just fine! Interesting class content and materials - I actually enjoyed doing my homework! Adam is professional but not robot like - overall he is a GREAT professor!!
I really enjoyed this course
I had Mr. Hoffman during a summer course so it was only 5 weeks long. There was a decent amount of work due almost every day, which of course is to be expected during a shortened semester. It was not overwhelming however. There was a lot of reading in this course, but again, not too much. Mr. Hoffman is a fine Professor.
Amazing PowerPoint lectures for each unit. Extremely helpful on quizzes and exams. Clearly explains expectations and grading criteria at start of the course. Easy to contact as well. Lots of course work, be prepared to learn!
My teacher give us feedback when we did a really good job on our homework. My teacher shows us respect for not telling us something negative. My teacher cares for us in all the things we do in Class.
Cool sci movies, cool sci fi books, cool sci fi class. If you aren't interested in the topic don't bother taking the class, but if you like movies like Blade Runner, The Matrix, etc., and like talking about what it means to be human, you'll enjoy this class. You have to read three sci fi novels and watch a bunch of movies. Great professor.
Adam is a great professor. His requirements are very clear. As long as you complete the assignments on time and read the materials you should definitely get an A.
Adam structures his courses in such a way that complex ideas and difficult theory are much easier to grasp, and adequately pairs academia concerning humans and technology with relevant films and literature. If you're not willing to put in the work, don't bother taking his class. But if you're genuinely open to new ideas, sign up ASAP!
Lots of Homework and Reading. Read 3 novels in one semester on top of films and articles we had to watch and read. It was a hard class but as long as you do your work you will be fine. he does except late work
Overall, my understanding for technology was very limited. After taking this course I have discovered so much more and I really enjoyed this class.
There is a time commitment for these courses as you read several novels and watch movies. However, he is a great instruction who is very communicative and has a clear schedule. You always know where you stand and can always ask for help or clarification. Great instructor.
Quizzes and tests are not hard as long as the requires films and novels have been watched and read. They are open book and non-timed.
This course was an online course taken in Spring 2017. The class has a good set up and easy to follow, but does require checking the schedule at least once a week. Typical format is read, watch a movie, discuss online. Be wary of quizzes and tests as they question specific quotes and details that you WILL have to look back in the material.
This class is a lot of work, but it is very interesting and relevant to the times we are living in.
Professor Hoffman is really good. He responded very quickly to any questions I had and gave good feedback on written assignments. I enjoyed the material and would have no problem taking another of his classes. Really good power points.
Professor Hoffman does an excellent job exposing you to material relevant to class and encouraging you to think critically. Assignment instructions are clear and tests/quizzes were all fair. HUM 371 is an outstanding course and you can tell Professor Hoffman is enthusiastic about the subject.
UGH! It took him up to three weeks to get us grades back. Little to no feedback on weekly discussion and class activities. At the beginning of the semester he sent a schedule with the due home work and assignment (good idea) but never heard from him each with announcements or new units. His powerpoints are passed on from semester to semester.
I would gladly take another class of Professor Hoffman.
This instructor gives you everything you need to complete the assignments, and succeed.
The teacher is great, he provides good background information, quick feedback, and explains what is expected of each assignment very clearly. The class requires a lot of reading, but there is a good mixture of movies and reading that make the class much more enjoyable. Also the DB questions are thought provoking creating good discussion.
I highly recommend this professor. His course content is great! He tells you exactly what he wants, and gives you room to be a creative thinker as well. The online course format is orderly and organized. I am planning to take more courses from him.
The best part about this class was the course schedule being all laid out in advance. At any given moment I knew exactly what to do and when. No surprises, no waiting, no confusion.
Overall, this class was pretty easy. You do have to do the readings and watch the movies, but they were all very interesting and well chosen to be able to engage with the film and the material. I would take this professor again.
I had Adam for both HUM 371 and 373 in the same semester. It was advantageous to have 2 of his classes at once because he staggers when assignments/quizzes are due so it makes it possible to keep up. There was a lot of reading but it was all interesting, none of it was out of a textbook. Highly recommended! (unless you don't like a lot of reading)
His class has a lot of work but very well structured. I have taken two of his classes and I would take a third.
Although I took this class on line Professor Hoffman was always available and responded quickly to email that I sent.
I found the way this class was laid out, it was easy to follow. The materials were interesting. There are a few books involved so make sure to start reading ahead. I love the media he uses. It's all relevant. The discussion posts and assignments are easy if you do the work. It's mostly opinion based and uses critical thinking.
Adam is a very nice instructor and is flexible on some things, as life does send you curves, follow the syllabus for items that cannot be retaken.
Great class. Encourages you to critically engage the subject material.
Fascinating subject. Board discussions are engaging, but lengthy. Format them correctly or will lose points. The assignments are tougher and lengthier. The style of the assignments was not always clearly explained. The quizzes are pretty easy, however some of the questions are tricky and ask for exact quotation from the texts, which I disliked.
Professor Hoffman's Online HUM371 class was pretty cool. It is A LOT of reading and viewing, but if you manage your time you'll get a good grade. Tests are open book and untimed. All expectations are clearly outlined for you. Also, he gives probably the best feedback I've had from any online course. Would recommend.
I really enjoyed this class. There is a lot of work, so don't fall behind, but it was worth it. There is a lot of reading but most of it was interesting. I appreciated that the instructor made his expectations very clear and he responds quickly to email. Great class, I would definitely take another class from this instructor.
Mr. Hoffman is a very thorough instructor. He provides a lot of detail on everything (which is amazing because most professors don't) and gives great feedback on assignments (which helped me improve for future assignments). Also note that when he states there will be hours and hours of reading for this course, he was not joking! But overall, great
I absolutely loved this class as well as Adam, he was a fantastic professor for this course. There is definitely a lot of content but it is all so interesting and a lot of the content is movies! He sets you up to succeed, is more than happy to work with you if you need help, and has very clear expectations and grading criteria for every assignment
This was a very interesting and fun class. You will read a few novels they're not massive. You will also have the opportunity to watch some really awesome movies! Adam is great at giving good feedback. There is a fair amount of homework but nothing you wouldn't expect from any other class.
Hoffman's class was really interesting but I would not say this was an easy class. Three books were read in one semester but they were interesting non-fiction which I enjoyed but understand the time it takes.
Good choice if you like Sci-Fi and/or Futuristic topics.
I first took this class because I thought it would be an easy A, but boy was I wrong. The class is a challenge, especially the quizzes. Make sure to watch all of the films and read everything that is asked to. The class was interesting and I recommend it to anyone with an open mind. Adam was great and always gave good feedback on assignments.
I would definitely take another course with Mr Hoffman
For me this class was very intensive, lots of homework and assignments, and was too long in compared with the other NAU classes that I had taken. The professor was very accessible anytime that I needed help. He replied to my e-mails
Was fair with grading, offered an interesting class topic, prepared with paper rubrics and a detailed syllabus, was available for constructive feedback. Overall good experience in this English class, ENG101. I'm not a huge fan of English either.
The material was interesting and professor brought up a lot of interesting points. He is not clear about expectations, essay and paper format, makes you VERY uncomfortable asking questions. Gets defensive when you pose a question. Very little to no feedback on what can be improved in papers.
Class was 5 modules. Each topic was different so you didn't feel like you were doing a monotonous subject. LOTS of reading. Quizzes are all open book. He is a decent grader when it comes to the essays, there are 3. Easy to get a hold of, great class overall if you're into hippy stuff. Must Have Netflix. Be prepared to stomach animal cruelty in vids
Instructions are always clear, follow them exactly & you'll be golden. There were quite a few reading assignments, but what class doesn't? You probs shouldn't wait until the last minute to do big assignments because you typically have to watch a movie or read articles, but if you like a challenge then go for it. Best part, materials are provided!
I really enjoyed this class! The topics were challenging and made you think
While I was an online student with Professor Hoffman, he was quick to answer any question that I may have. He has been one of the best professors that I've had at NAU. He truly inspires you to be a better person through the videos he requires you to watch or the material you read. There is no actual textbook because he gives you what is needed.
An Awesome caring instructor. I would take this class again! I learned so much. However this class is not for the weak when it comes to reality of animal slaughter houses. I cried more than ever in this class, but I am now educated on major issues with our planet. Loved it.
Great Professor!
Professor Hoffman was great! It was an online semester class but this class is totally doable in that format. Just weekly discussion boards and Pearson readings and quizzes. Lots of reading to be prepared for the detailed discussions, but humanities is amazing and aides us so much in our understanding of the world. Amazing class, amazing professor.
HUM 101 with Adam Hoffman has been a breeze! More or less, if you do what is expected of you, you'll pass. If you're not someone who likes open ended writing this class isn't for you.
Adam was amazing! Very understanding of having a life outside of class. He was lenient about late work and emailed back almost immediately! I took this class online so I never met him in person, but he was the best and I really hope I can take an in-person class with him one day! HUM 101 was the best and easiest course at NAU!
Great videos and links to articles.
Very patient and understanding!
This class is not too hard to follow. Dr. Adam is very friendly and always gives me specific feedback. We do not have to buy the book, and he will provide us with the links to read in all discussions. Always reply with your answers as soon as possible. If you require HUM 345, I think his online class will be a good choice.
He was an amazing professor. I got to write about topics I was interested in and learn more writing skills. He is also very understanding about mental health which made the experience in his class very enjoyable while I was going through some tough times. He explained the work well and didn't pile too much onto us all at once which is also nice.
