Dr. Katz is a genius. Easily the best English teacher/course I have ever had in all my years of going to school. A lot of work though... 10 small papers, and 4 larger papers.
Dr. Katz is a Good teacher but his classes can be a little dull. He is always there for help with papers and assignments and you can email him your papers if you ever need help. He can be a tough grader but once you find out whae he wants in a paper you will do well. 10 small assignments, 4 papers.
you need to learn what he's looking for and then you can do ok, and he's very willing to help and very approachable. discussion based class, make sure to participate, wants you to challenge yourself.
he's too smart. I never understood what he was talking about and I don't think anyone else did either. He's willing to help, but he's not very good at clarifying himself.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He is the worst teacher that I ahve ever had. He is very unclear as to what he is looking for and is a rediculous grader. Assigns about 2 papers a week, obviously an insane amount of work. Do anything to avoid him!
I have had him for both 101 and 102. Amazing teacher. You have to be really lazy to not be able to keep up in the class. Email him any question you won't, he gets back within two hours. Very helpful. TAKE HIM.
Prof.Katz is a good guy, and a decent teacher. However, his assignments are a bit difficult and very repetitive. Be prepard to do alot of reading. Pay close attention to his explanations of his assignments. It is very easy to become lost.
great guy!!!i took him for 101 and then again for 102 because he was so good.very intelligent but really wants you to do well.always willing to give you feedback-email him and he will get back to you within a couple of hours.a lot of work but i learned more in these english classes than i did throughout all of highschool.TAK HIM!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! There were 3 people that transfered into our class at the beginning of the year and the next class they were gone. There's alot of work: reading long boring passages, then writing the SAME stuff over and over again. Once you start reading more passages you have to incorporate the past texts as well.
Good compared to other english professors, however, nothing is ever good enough for him. His comments, assignments, and questions don't usually make much sense,very philosophical. Everything is very rhetorical and you're always working on a paper. Even though he's a very difficult teacher, he wants everyone to do well and will help if you need it.
If you are taking this class for 101 I would strongly discourage it. You will find that ways of reading is the Bible for him. Obsessed with terms, such as "frame" and "with & against the grain". Not helpful, he doesn't tell you what to do and asks you to answer your own question. hard grader but doesn't tell you how to do better next time avoid him

STAY AWAY! You write very few papers, 4 or 5 for the entire semester but you work on them every single day and have to revise it and submit it on the file exchange every night. Nothing is ever good enough. He rambles on about things that make no sense. Only good thing is you bring your laptops everyday to distract yourself from misery.

My first english class at QU was terrible. It got to the point where no one showed up to class because you didnt learn anything or never understood any of his assignments what so ever. He stutters and thinks everyone knows what he is thinking. Dont take.
Requires revisions/writing for each class. The work is not challenging as long as you aren't lazy. In class is spent reviewing 1 student's essay for the entire hour, a lot of people go on facebook the whole time. Asks abstract confusing questions in class but praises all and any attempt to answer them. Would definitely take again!
Katz is the nicest guy ever but his class is incredibly boring. Its all on laptops so your gunna end up on facebook without a doubt. You get homework everynight but as long as you keep up with it it isnt too bad. His questions can get confusing but if he sees you attempting them he's happy. I'd take him, its not too bad at all.
Worst prof ever, he will ruin your gpa. He is unclear on what he wants and after the assignment he will tell you what you did wrong instead of helping you. Class is useless as he asks random question that do not make sense. Lastly, he is obsessed with this so called myth about reading with and against the grain. You decide if you want to take him.
A lot of the same work. Reading with and against the grain OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. Hated the class while i was in it but in retrospect it improved my writing a lot.

Hands down best English teacher I've ever had. Improved my writing so much throughout 1 semester. He is really the nicest guy but does give a lot of work. Is happy to help you if you ask for it. Class is borng and you'll end up playing games and on Facebook most of the time. Try to pay attention & ask for help because if you do you'll be fine.

Worst. Class. Ever. Super nice guy though. The class is all on laptops commenting on other people's essays. Every class you get an unclear assignment to add on to your essay you're currently working on ( the class consists of 4 essays that end up being like 15 pgs). BUT he did cancel last 2 weeks of class. He gives everyone a B.
The way that he conducts class was not what I was expecting. You have an assignment every night, but will spend weeks working on the same paper. He does lots of exercises with the papers including peer editing and writing in different ways, but I don't think this course prepared me as a writer for the rest of my college career.
Although the class was challenging, it really had me thinking in a way that was both interesting and increased my knowledge. He wants you to go beyond what you are used to and is always willing to help. If you are up for a challenge but an all around good class, this is the one!
He is the worst, I come back to the dorm everyday and complain. He made us write 25 pages in the first two weeks and is a miserable sap of a human being. I wish I didn't take him.
Katz is an interesting guy, to say the least. His assignments are rather confusing and long, but as long as you relate to his general requirements in some way and back up your writing with explanations and quotes right from the book, he'll give you an A. His class is boring and his assignments are time consuming, but he's a really nice professor.

I'm a straight A student and I love English. EN 102 with Katz made me not only hate English but hate life. It's a terribly boring class with impossible assignments. I finished with an A-, but I know for a fact that he didn't read my 45 page final paper. DO NOT TAKE.
Not the best but definitely not the worst. The first few classes are really confusing because the way he teaches is nothing like high school, but the class is easy enough. Just comment in class a couple times and you are good. Recommended. He cancels the last two weeks of class and you don't have to show up for the final.
Prof. Katz truly is one the the kindest profs I have every had. One may even say he is the second coming of the Buddha. He has an odd obsession with grain, both analyzing it and eating it. His loves the author Bok, the letter A, but he hates Science and Math. He's the most interesting man ever. The class is boring but you will never forget him.
He is miserable. There is one word to describe Professor Katz and that is horrific. His assignments don't ever make sense and he constantly asks questions that don't have an answer. During this class the only thought I had was death and fantasy football, do not take this class.

At first this class was really challenging but if you go to office hours, and he sees that you are interested in doing well he helps you a lot. The topics are primarily nonfiction but thats just english 101.They won't make any sense at first but it gets easier.
DO NOT TAKE. Katz assigns lengthy homework assignments every single class. You can only miss 3 classes and you do nothing, but peer edit during class time. Didn't learn anything from his class and could barely understand what he was asking half the time.
I've taken Katz for both English 101 and 102, and from what I hear he was the easier to work with professors of that department. While his writing assignments were long, you knew well ahead of time what you were going to do, and had plenty of time to do it in. He's a helpful guy if you go to office hours. Assigns homework every night and papers end up being about 30 pages but if you keep up with all of the assignments, the class really isn't that bad. You will like this class if you're a deep thinker. People dislike Katz because they don't put in the effort and do not appreciate the pieces of writing that he provides students. If you put in minimal effort and do not care for this class, don't expect a good grade. I would take his class again. Not the most sociable person, but very understanding.

Very very boring. His monotone voice still haunts me. We literally did the same thing every class, just reviewing student's writing and giving critiquing. Yes, he COULD change up the class routine a bit. But, I do think the readings were really interesting. Students at QU fail to appreciate pieces of writing and put time into their assignments. REALITY CHECK, THIS IS COLLEGE. You can't expect an A when your grammar is poor, inconsistent, and your writing is not thoughtful/shows little to ZERO effort
This Professor doesn't know how to teach English. Boring course, I didn't learn a thing. THE SAME ROUTINE EVERY MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY. My reading and writing did not improve. With all due respect, pick a different english professor if you actually want to learn.
If you take this class, you will be frustrated. Lots of work, unclear on your progress, limited feedback, and speculative grading. 2 page papers every class and same monotonous class routine that will not improve your writing. Do not recommend.
Assigned a total of three papers that were worked on throughout the semester with a few new paragraphs due each class. Readings are long. Some assignments are confusing but he tries to help in any way possible. Overall a nice person and means well. I am in no way a good writer nor do i enjoy English but this wasn't terrible. Do work good grade.
Professor Katz is a genuinly nice guy. He cares about how you are doing and is always willing to help if you ask. You must pay attention and do assignments on the assigned date, in order to get a good grade. If you do all work and do the papers for every class the end of the year is easier. Guy is an absolute nightmare. Switch out and save your semester
He's a nice guy, but as a teacher he sucks. Literally does the same routine every single class where people peer-edit other student papers. Doesn't teach the material at all, but still expects his students to know what they are doing regardless. I have learned absolutely nothing from this class. Do not take.
He follows the same exact routine day to day. If thats what you like then by all means take him. But the way QU does english is portfolio based and he will not give you strong/ helpful comments unless you actually put in the effort independently to ask him or to go to his office hours. Very monotone.
I wouldn't recommend this professor. Its honestly not a bad class to be in but you do the same exact thing every single day, and I'm not exaggerating at all. Be prepared to have writing assignments due each class and its unclear how well or poorly you are doing. Haven't learned anything about english and he is really boring.
He requires you to write a new draft of a paper for each class, M-W-F. So the workload is hard to keep up with. There are four papers throughout the semester and he doesn't give number grades until midterms and then finals.

He makes you do a draft for each class but it's only adding a page each time (double-spaced), which allows you to build the 10-15 page papers he expects out of you over the course of a few weeks, and since each draft is due each class, it makes you keep the pace, which is helpful if you're a procrastinator.

Don't take this class. He's so boring, and you literally do the same thing EVERY SINGLE CLASS. You're always going to be writing papers, he is very unclear when he comments on them. He answers your questions with questions which is very annoying. His class is extremely boring and although he is nice I feel like I haven't learned a thing.

Don't believe everything you hear! Professor Katz is very kinda and intelligent man who is passionate about reading and writing. You may have to work a little more for your grade, but he guides you in every way. He gives great feedback and is always willing to help, just participate. He grades you based on your progression throughout the year.

I fall asleep almost everyday, and he does not have a personality. Be ready to sit down and just listen to a lotttt of talking, and listening and doing the same thing everyday. I do not reccomend
You basically do the same thing every class. Read student papers and give feedback on them, then discuss it with the class. It's pretty boring but it did really help me understand the texts more. There's only three papers and the final is revised versions of those papers and that's what your grade for the semester is based on.
Very nice man, boring professor. Very approachable and answers emails quickly really wants to help. Class is very repetitive and he makes you work hard for your grade. If you participate and ask for help with your essays, he will like you more. Homework after every class but it makes it much easier to get the papers done if you do the assignments.
Every day it's same thing but it's really helpful to read other students work and help them make corrections was a total of 3 paper that you just constantly work on and revise. He is really helpful and always answers his emails.

I have been in Professor Katz's 102 course for about a month now. I can honestly say that I never have any idea whats going on in this class. The entire class is based around translating a story using semantic primes, which is the most irrelevant and difficult thing to do. We do the same thing every day & I always find myself dozing off.

He calls people out in class and makes us do this assignment where we translate this passage to semantic primes which is a semester long project and it is all u are graded on. Nothing he says makes sense. You work on one giant essay all semester that has no meaning whatsoever. Difficult to understand what he is asking for and when you ask, his explanation still makes no sense. Peer edit every day and he randomly picks to you to talk about a question he has about the essay. worst class I have ever taken. Midterm grades just came out. He based it on a single paper that we have written. We do the same thing in class every time. The text is very difficult. He calls you out in class and he asks you questions for a whole 10 minutes about the text and another students paper. I do not recommend this class at all.
He's a nice guy and he wants to help, I just didn't understand the paper. You get one essay to base all of your papers off of for the whole semester, so if you don't understand it, it's difficult to get a good grade. He also speaks in the way of that paper, it's all very scholarly. When I asked for help, he really tried, but I just couldn't get it.

This class literally made no sense at all you work on the same paper for the whole year. When he speaks I really do wonder if we speak the same language. One good thing about him is that he does not take attendance but when I do go I want to cry because you WILL get randomly called on and WILL FORCE you to talk about nonsense for 10 minutes plus.

we had 3 papers in the class and he assigned revisions to be made after every class. all you did was do peer revisions every class. very boring. I was dumb and procrastinated on editing the last two papers until finals week so he sent me a couple of nasty emails telling me to catch up. Joke's on him though I got an A- on the papers
While he is very nice, i encourage people not to take him unless: you enjoy sitting in class working on the same topic everyday, love writing papers, have super sonic hearing and don't get bored easily by the sound of someones voice.
katz is quick to answer emails however regret wasting any money on this class. He has the personality of sandpaper. His classes are all exactly the same one assignment the whole semester. You have a chart of 150 words and must use only those words to translate a manuscript. no words like and etc. years of education and time wasted on this class
I had to write 2paragraphs for an essay for homework every night and edit the previous paragraphs. this class took up most of my HW time
Do not take this class unless you are one willing to suffer from brain damage. It's safe to say this was the most pointless and unorganized learning experience I have ever taken part in. Each class is filled with the exact same pointless activities that have no correlation to the real world. You will learn nothing and waste both your time and cash

This class was a complete waste of time. Nonsensical. I've rarely received below an A in all my AP English courses throughout high school until this class. Katz is monotone, repetitive, you are solely dependent on yourself to understand the material. Students receive low grades or fail. This course is bizarre in context and needs revaluation.
Professor Katz himself is a very sweet man but his class is pretty awful. You work on the same paper all semester which is translating a definition by using the semantic primes and it is rather hard especially if you don't understand the concept. He is very monotone and didn't really help anyone in my class. I wouldn't take any of his classes again
We had homework every class. Class consists a lot of talking about papers, commenting on other peoples papers, and addressing the paper in a different way. Though we only had one paper, we worked on it constantly, and it was definitely draining. He was super helpful towards the deadline, left a bunch of comments for me.
Every single class was spent working with the same text. He was really bad at explaining what he wanted us to write about, and he always tried to read too much into things. This class was boring and confusing and I do NOT recommend taking him if you actually want to learn. If you participate and turn in your work, you should get a good grade.
I think that the atmosphere in the class was stale at some points. Working on the same paper for the semester was actually a good learning experience, in-depth and interesting to me, but the approach was the exact same. Every class feels like the last, and I think we got way too much time to analyse things. Katz himself is great, super helpful!
Katz may be a little monotone and ofc no one wants to take English, but he really is such a sweet man. He is incredibly helpful if you go to him, and he is excitied to see studnts learning.

The whole class grade is based on one assignment which is a really long paper completed throughout the semester. I found it boring, but I'm a science major. Good class if you're an English major. Trust the process and pay attention to his comments on your work and you'll do fine. Nice guy, good feedback, boring class. I wouldn't take again.
Honestly the class was really boring as you do the same thing everyday and have similar homework assignments after every class. But you know what your getting into everyday and the homeworks arent graded but its important to keep up with them for the final paper. There is one paper the entire class but he is there for help in any way.
Professor Katz is a good guy but very boring. We wrote one essay for the entire course and only received one grade at the end of the semester which was the final paper. He gives feedback on your writing but not very helpful feedback. Content is very confusing and complex which makes the paper tough to write.
Katz is very boring with assignments that leave you confused. He uses a fairly advanced vocabulary when speaking and while impressive, causes students to get lost in what he is trying to say. Most of the time is spent on grammar when there should also be a research component to the class isolating myself from other students in the course
Katz is one of the most interesting lecturers I have had. His intelligence is otherworldly and completely flipped my perspective on academic reading and writing styles. Lecture heavy and cold calls but would 100% take his class again. So little homework, just worked on the same paper all semester. Gives really good feedback if you ask for it.

Participation matters, if you raise your hand occasionally you won't ever be cold-called on. His instructions for assignments can be very confusing and he doesn't give direct answers to questions. Very accessible and will work with you on your final paper to improve it. You will write a lot both in and out of class, but that is expected for english
Professor Katz means well and wants his students to learn however he is very difficult to connect with. Class is extremely boring, his directions are unclear, nobody understands the vocab he uses. You can ask him to re explain 10 times and you will still be left confused. Class is a discussion or independent work. Homework every night.

Katz makes you read a very complex article that's difficult to understand and he barely clarifies it, but instead tries to talk smart and make it more difficult. I did not understand a single assignment and the text we work with through the ENTIRE semester is the most difficult and hard to understand piece of work I have ever read. Every night you will have a two page essay assignment to write. With no instructions. DO NOT!
The text that was given was so difficult to understand. Prof. Katz talks in a language that is so hard to understand. He expects us to adapt to the language of the text. His instructions are so vague. Asking for help is difficult because he doesn't explain anything. If you struggle with English DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Jeez this course made me want to die. He speaks so monotone, and uses a really difficult text that he expects us to understand immediately. He doesn't elaborate, and when you ask him for help he doesn't do anything that's actually helpful. Would not take again, ever.
If you can avoid him, I would. Literally read one paper the whole semester and did "work" on the Essay all semester. Its to repetitive and just draining. He's an alright . His grading criteria is so unclear you only get like one grade based on the work you do all semester and if you miss like one day that will impact your whole portfolio.
Currently sitting now "revising" my final portfolio thinking about how useless this class is and how you literally will struggle with every single assignment, not understand a word of what prof Katz is talking about (he won't explain it to you either, just spout big words that end up confusing you 10x more), and be lost the entire course. You will be writing a lot in this course, so be sure to understand the material from the article. Participate in class discussions as much as you can, because he gives you valuable insight. Your grade is almost entirely your final paper, which you will be working on throughout the semester.
I would not recommend taking this class, if you don't want to have repetitive and identical homework assignments every night. Directions are extremely unclear, and overall hard to follow. I have not yet learned anything being in this class, as we have been reading the same article for the past 3 weeks, continue to do so for the entire semester.
Absolutely awful and does not want to help students. He just gives confusing assignments and says words you don't understand to seem superior
He is the most confusing man on the planet and avoid him if you can. You'll never be right but he also can tell you why you're wrong. He wants every sentence of the passage analyzed and still its never enough for him. I got a C- on my first 3 assignments and he couldn't give me any constructive criticism to improve my grade.
This man makes literally no sense. Every single RA or Tutor I've spoken to about him grimaces when his name is mentioned, which just proves how much of a lost cause his classes are. His comments and content are so confusing and the assignments take hours just to understand what he is asking you to do. I wish any freshman taking his class good luck
evil! never gives guidelines and the assignments are confusing. he only puts 3 grades in the grade book so your grade is always low because of how tough of a grader and how unclear he his.we do the same thing in class every single day. the class only works with one piece of literature for the whole semester and its very difficult to understand
spends all semester giving you the worst instructions and confusing feedback only to finish the semester with a 1500 word paper. impossible to get As, nothing is ever good enough and he himself doesn't even know what he wants
Katz is probably the worst teacher ive ever had. He will never give a grade better than a B+ and makes you do ridiculous homework assignments that make no sense. He gives you criticism that isn't helpful in the slightest, and will not make any sense if you ask him to explain. I feel like I would understand a foreign language better than this class.
Please avoid him if you can. He has no clue what he is doing and in his eyes he is the only one right. Every time I try to bring up a point I am completely wrong yet he gives me B's on my papers???? Makes absolutely no sense. Also his passage he uses for the class is extremely confusing and just drives everyone insane. It never made sense

I would not wish this upon my worst enemy. This class has caused me so much stress and anger for the whole semester. He claims he is willing to help, but you will just become more confused because no matter how hard you try nothing is good enough. Get ready to experience hell on earth. Professor Katz has no personality, all i can say is good luck.
Professor Katz means well and wants his students to learn however he is very difficult to connect with. Class is extremely boring, his directions are unclear, nobody understands the vocab he uses. You can ask him to re explain 10 times and you will still be left confused. Class is a discussion or independent work. Homework every night. He is bad

This guy couldn't teach a fish to swim. His lectures make no sense and he doesnt respond to emails. He will accuse the class of using AI despite not having any proof to back his claims. I would rather drop out than take his class again, because at least dropping out would make sense. His final was 4,000 words minimum, and he cant teach.
Avoid taking him at all costs. I'm not kidding when I say he is the worst English prof u could have. SO much work that does not make sense. His feedback & assignments r confusing & he will ask u ur opinion & then tell u it's wrong?? Super tough grader & his lectures put me to sleep. He cold calls so be ready to talk every single class. Horrible.
He legit speaks in riddles. He doesn't answer his emails and when you ask him questions he leaves you more confused. You will be doing the same assignment over and over and still not know what you are doing. He talks the whole class and calls on you randomly so be prepared. Do not take this class if you can.
Would not recommend taking. he would speak in class and just try and sound smart and educated and make 0 sense. none of the directions on the homework made any sense either and we just kept redoing assignments over and over again to "improve." painful classes where he would ask impossible to understand questions and was just a painful class to take
Professor Katz is literally the worst professor I have ever had. His classes make absolutely no sense and he grades so harshly. Hard to get anything over a B no matter what you do or write. He literally graded one of my papers without even looking at the full assignment. He only looked at parts 1,2, and 3. When there was 9 parts total. Actual Hell.
If you want to keep your sanity, don't take his class. It can be done, just with LOTS of headaches. Speaks in riddles and the "papers" aren't really papers. Best of luck, you'll need it.
The class is so repetitive, and it's hard to know what's going on. He will literally yap about something on the paper you are working on, and it makes no sense. His instructions for his assignments are very unclear and confusing. There's also a new assignment due every class. Please never take him, you will thank me.

He isn't great with explaining assignments. He grades too harshly and does a poor job of explaining why you got the grade you got. I feel like I had to do mental gymnastics to get through this class. My advice to anyone reading is just do the classwork and even if you don't know what you are writing about, just have a million things written down.
This class is like getting football 101 by Tom Brady; you won't understand. We referenced the same three papers the whole semester without any real background or direction. He gives a daily assignment but never grades it. He grades the final paper (minimum 3,000 words) on how much he thinks you have improved. Most other reviews are accurate.
I swear this guy talks in riddles, assignments don't make much sense, he weirdly stares at you, and every single class he cold-calls. Papers are also way above the criteria that EN 101 should be. Adam Katz should be your last choice for a professor.
Dude talks like a philosophical douche bag and you'll have an assignment every day. He takes attendance and showing up to class after the first 8 weeks is pointless, since it's the same thing over and over again you can complete the assignment whenever especially since the assignments are so boring the class doesn't participate. DONT TAKE
He's a nice dude but he's a tough grader and I don't think he knows what he really wants even from students.
