nice guy, easy class do the work and show up its simple, have to do stupid weekly journals of bulls&#@. treats class as children really easy work.
not a well teacher
No Comments
he is very unclear on his asingments, and what he expects.
Nice guy, however, is not clear on what he wants, assignments wise. Is a hard grader on essays. Everyone I know that has taken him has never gotten an A. His point system is wack. Take him as a last resort.
He was the best teacher! I would highly recommend him. He grades very simple and the work is incredibly easy. He explains everything so well I dont know how anyone cannot understand the assignment. Take him you will learn a lot seriously.
he is the coolesthe is very nice in teachinghe is very systematic and wouldlike evrything to be in order. apart from that he isthe coolest professor he make the time in class be full of fun and he himself is very connected to his students. this man is nice take hime when you have the chance heiscool
what can I say ?
I thought he was great and organized. His class is easy to pass, as long as you are willing to do your part and devote the time to it. Extremely friendly as well.
He is a great teacher, loves surfing, and explains everything clearly. Lots of class participation. You will learn a lot.
He is a great teacher. If you complete the assignments, read the material, complete the essays in the format that he wants it, and participate in class, you should do very well! At times, it is hard to know what he wants with some work but he alway answers the questions you may have.
Adam's a great guy who loves literature and writing. He's a bit flaky-more like a student than a professor sometimes-but once you get over that, he's a lot of fun to work with. The class is challenging with lots of writing on a tight schedule, so be prepared to work consistently throughout the semester.
Adam is a great teacher, ive taken him twice throught the year.At first it may seem as he asks alot from the students; however,it isnt anything you cant handle. Everything i learned in his class is stuck in my head esp. all of the options.
this class w/ him was a breeze... and fun at the same time. As long as you do your work, you will pass the class. He keeps it interesting, esp. with his textbook, which has some laughs in it.

Adam is a nice person, but he is the hardest teacher that i have ever had! he has SOOOO much homework, and he is really unfair about when stuff is turned in. and there are times when things remain unclear but sense he has SO much to cover, he cant elaborate on the question. so if you want to pass, don't take a class with this teacher.
This teacher is a joke! I was going to be an enghilh msjor, but not now! You work sooooo hard for your papers and he just shoots you down and makes you feel like crap. Your life will be miserable if you take his class!!Too much busy work!!!
This guy is a moron! He grades essays based on whether he agrees with it or not. His mormon based views make any liberal points made in essays targets for lower grading. He gives too much work, not enough time, and then he grades the work incredibly hard wen you are all done. Please, save yourself, do not take Kemplers class.
Didn't teach anything at all. Waste of my time and money. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
he's alright if u do ur work,he is loud which is good but assigns too much work
This is the worst teacher i have ever had; he is not clear on his instructions. 40 people started the class and only 7 are left. He also said that if you missed 4 classes you would be dropped, unless you are an African American basketball player, and then the rules don't apply to you. He is on the athletic committee. This teache is horible. DO NOT
4 absences and u fail. unclear on what is expected. does not critique papers enough for improvement. biased. about 4 papers to do. the use of blackboard was a nice change; even though it was not an online class. the only useful tools i obtained from this class were the sentence-combining options, maybe "hamburgers", and better essay structure.
what everyone said and theN some!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! that **** is crazy! he is unapprociable and u migh as well take and online class!
HE WAS WAS AMAZINGLY EASY. Everyone who complained and still complains probably didn't do well in his class. He is very straight foward with his assignments and grades. If you don't understand something, he will clarify it for you. He is not mean, strict or stern. He is just disciplined. He runs a very fast paced class, so pay attention!
Its been weeks and im still waiting for my grade to know if i'll qualify for eng 91, but now I gotta wait til next semester since my grade has not been posted. its a pass or fail class so thats very critical in just passing..
He's cool. Just follow his rules. He's not big on talking in his class, and he'll be the first to let you know. He However, is real big on showing everybody respect. I like him. He's genuine. He's understanding if you have a situation that prevents you from coming to class. If a mistake is made, just let him know and he'll fix it!
Too much busywork, rules. Not much help with english writing.
I loved him. I thought he was an amzing teacher, and extremely helpful with ways of writing. yeah there were some boring days but that's because it's english class, he's there to teach it, not entertain you. He was extremely nice. A bit of a fast mover.. pay attention in class!!
Never take him! It was aweful. I didn't learn anything and now I'm in 102 struggling because I didn't learn in 101. I did not enjoy his class at all or his personality. He was cool when he was talking about surfing, but I think that was all he is interested in. He doesn't seem to enjoy teaching, and I didn't enjoy it either!
I took him a while back and I thought that he was a good teacher. He asks for a decent amount of homework, including several Essays. Very liberal, so don't bring up Bush if you want to leave early! He came late to class practically every day. Overall, an enjoyable class.
fast paced. go to class. pay attention. does a lot of online assignments
He's a good teacher. College involves work and he'll give it to you. I learn A LOT when it came to grammatical skills which I will be using for the rest of my life. He is very mature and keeps the class rolling. He makes sure you pay attention/participate. I have my final tomorrow and would like to shake his hand because hes got his stuff together
Surfing was a sick class. You will learn a lot about the sport (history, saftey, techniques, equipment) and there is no homework, just one project. If you attend all of the classes and the three field trips, its an easy A. There is a final, which I found to be pretty easy as well.
I HIGHLY recommend this class!! Professor is very helpful and not hard at all! He goes over quizzes and tests right before tests. A lot of easy works and some extra credits. Extra credits worth a lot of points!A lot of writing and blackboard assignments but they take only 20minutes to finish. I hate to work but I passed this class with high scores~
His class is really fun and enjoyable. He gives extra credit, and the reading is not to bad.
It was creative writing, but I think it was 105... not sure. Hes a nice guy. He stared at me a lot and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I had fun, but he was a hard grader, well a better way to word it is unfair. It was CREATIVE writing, but he was full of rules and restrictions, I still did great in the class... but I felt restricted!
Really great teacher.
He was in awesome teacher surf was sooo much fun and he's really chill all you have to do is show up to the classes and trips take the swimming test and you get an A , take this class!
He was a good teacher. He always made the class entertaining and fun with all the talking and mingeling you do. There is alot of work, but it is easy. For the essays; he tells you EXACTLY how he wants them. You basically have to fill in the spaces. GET THE BOOKS! If you do the work and come to class you will pass.=)
OMG my favorite teacherr everrr! wow. i love this teacher, his class is amazingly easy and fun, he cares about attendence and u cant use ur phone, but wowww. everything was easyy. i recomend 1000000% i wanted to take him again but hes not teaching my class at valencia campus
I love to write, and Mr Kempler helped me to reign that in. Through his teaching methods, toughness on grading, and encouragement I excelled and came out with a B. He is tough but he is thorough.
Good professor but gives lots of reading and writing assignments. Very strict regarding attendance.
He gives out at least 3hrs of hw daily. Although he does teach, he also gets sloppy at times. If your a guy don't miss his class because he tends to be more lenient towards girls, when it comes to missing assignments.
This guy is a real stickler. His teaching tactics are not bad, but he is not the nicest guy in the world. He is an unfair grader when it comes to essays. He wants it his way or the highway. He is a tough grader on just about everything. (my only complaint)
Professor Kempler is very strict with homework assignments; he gives the standard Carnegie Rule for homework. As long as you do your homework, you will pass his class. He does not allow phones in his class, and he always pairs up his students for in class assignments.
Mr. Kempler, is one of the worst teachers at COC. First of all, he is a unfair grader. He deducts half credit for all late work, and he is a stickler in just about anything: Hw, essays, reading, annotating, attendance, participation... For instance, I passed all of his quizzes with a high letter grade of an A or a B, however, I failed his class.
strict on completion of all work which is a alot. extremely boring.
He is a very helpful and knowledgeable man; he enjoys what he does and it shows!
He is an AWFUL teacher. I was really excited to take this class- WRONG. The only thing HE taught was how to combine simple sentences- an activity we spent HOURS on in total. It was a 200-level class. Everything else was assigned to and then taught by the students. I didn't think it was possible to make Children's Lit boring, but he managed. Horrid.
Kempler lets everyone talk and listens to students. He likes literature. Lots of work, but you'll be fine if you keep up.
He i strict but a very good teacher. There's a decent amount of work in the class and the homework is basically what you learn within the day and can be done pretty easily and quickly if you paid attention. He loves what he does and helps students a lot. He's understanding for necessary absences though he can be a hard grader.Overall great teacher!
What a wretched teacher. Absolutley awful. Boring and unenthusiastic; he made the students teach everything. He may as well not bothered coming to class. Everything was busywork. How someone managed to make a Children's Lit class that boring is beyond me. Truly truly horrible.
OMG. Talk about most ridiculous class ever. It was children's literature, and we were reading complex chapter books not even relevant to the subject. This class seems easy from the beginning, but isn't worth taking unless you're an English major. Kempler treats you like you're 4 years old. Group work every day.
Good teacher. Teaches u what u need to know to move on. I recommend him
I have never encountered a teacher that really cares like he does. Kempler is motivated to help his students succeed and is very understanding. Yes, it's an intense class, but you walk out with your head held high, knowing that you worked hard and learned. I recommend this class to those who want to discover what a love for English is all about.
He checks homework every class, which is a substantial load. He does group activity in every single class and expects everyone to participate. I really enjoyed him and this class! The homework takes time, but isn't hard at all. You just got to put in the effort. He's the best English teacher I've had in a very long time!
Some people complain because he makes you do a lot of group work, but I rather work with my classmates than listen to a lecture all day. It helped myself and my classmates feel comfortable with one another and we enjoyed class. He lets us discuss and relate to every topic we learned. He truly loves what he does and is awesome.
Professor Kempler was one of the best teachers I've ever had. He keeps the class moving very fast, everyone is required to participate. He really pushes you to succeed, and does a very good job at it. I wish he taught English 091 and English 101, I'd take him in a heartbeat. He does have a lot of homework, but it's easy. Great Teacher!
Gives a lot of unnecessary homework and he just keeps having us take tests on the options which I find pointless. Overall i didn't like this teacher. I recommend looking for another english 81 teacher
Trust me there are better teachers for english 81 then Kempler. I signed up for another teacher and i ended up getting put into his class which was the worst thing that happened to me. Just do yourself a favor and don't take kempler. There are MUCH better teachers out there then him
I love Professor Kempler! had him for English 071 and 081 and passed with an A. All you have to do is DO the work, and its so easy too. you have to particapate and he'll love you! learn all the sentence combining options and he will forsure love you! Such an easy A
overall loved the class. I think he was the best english teacher that I had overall. He provides a lot of work/ group work, but its nothing hard everything is doable even if your a little lazy i get lazy towards the end and i could of gotten a B+ but i missed the last essay and got a c+ i recommend this class.
Great teacher makes class fun,
i took him for english 81 and i dropped out because all he does is his job he doesnt seems like he cares and he seem like he hated everyone and his face was always so serious dont take his class you wont like him
I really love all the material he thought me , but his only problem is that he has high expectation of everyone. I will admit I didn't do so grate but it was because I never bother making up the missing work. He is very strict and I will recommend that if you like reading take his class.
Kempler is one of the best English teachers ive had. Yes, its a lot of work but it is EASY work. So many people fail his class because they put no effort. He is clear on all assignments and as long as you do them you get an A. Kind of a hard essay greater though. No midterm nor final. You learn a lot with kempler and cares for students success.
I took Kempler for 096 and he was one of the best English teachers I have had. Yes he can be difficult at times, but he really does care about his students. Everything I learned in his class I use almost in everyday when I write. Just make sure to do the homework and participate in class!! Take Kempler for English! You won't regret it.
Kempler is the best English teacher I have ever had! You will not regret taking his class. He truly does care about his students. He can be a little difficult at times, but he is truly the best!
This class requires a lot of work and time, but at the end it'll be worth it. You'll learn a lot of useful and interesting information that will help you throughout life. Highly recommended.
Always came to class with 100% effort but he just unloads the assignments.
I took Kempler for English 096. It was a tough class believe me, but you do learn a lot from him. Kempler made me a better writer. It's a lot of work but if you keep up with it you will get a good grade.
I took Kempler for English 096. It was a tough class believe me, but you do learn a lot from him. Kempler made me a better writer. It's a lot of work but if you keep up with it you will get a good grade. Take the teacher if you want a challenge and you want to actually learn. If you are looking for a wing it class, this is not the class.
He does not waste any time in class! I never got good grades in English, but I got an A in his class. He helped me improve so much. I still use what he taught me today. He will push you to work hard, but he is the best teacher I have ever had! He's very strict but if you do all the work, participate & go to his office hours you'll get a good grade
I learned "hamburgers" all semester long and "sentence combining options". This professor makes you incorporate that into essays and makes you visit an English tutor for journals, and 3 times for an essay, don't believe me? Take him.
Kempler was the greatest professor I've had. Gave students the chance to work together often and was truly there for his students. It is a lot of work but none of it was difficult.
In my opinion, I give him a 3 all around. He gives out a great amount of hw to do; we have an essay, annotations, vocab cards, and journals to complete: ALL IN 2 DAYS! I guess it's just me though. There are alot of things you learn in the class which will help you. With that being said, you CANNOT miss a class. It's fast-paced and a lot of work :
I did not enjoy this class, very opinionated lowers grade if absent. Assigns lots of material after every class meeting, grades hard. Also does not dismiss class short.
Very confusing professor with high expectations, lots of material and homework weekly. Tough grader, makes students purchase his version of an English textbook that runs $100. Do not take his class if you want a social life.
He is a very strict professor but still understanding. I wouldn't recommend him for students who want an easy class because he is NOT easy. I recommend him to students who want to gain reading and writing skills. I took him for two semesters and received an A each time. Be organized and prepared for EVERY class. He will make you work hard.
Learned a lot. We read some inspiring stories. Would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn. Don't take him if you want an easy A. Good sense of humor. Most handsome professor I've taken so far. 5 Hot Chili Peppers!
Assigns a lot of work for what I think should be a simple english class. Time spent doing assigned work, about 50%. Quiz every class. You have to buy around 4 books. Tells you that you NEED to purchase and not rent, but later accepts rentals, my advice, just rent. a lot of annotation. Not an easy A. You WILL need to work hard for this class.
Love him!!! He's the best He made me love reading and school Thank you !!!!
Kemlper is a great teacher. If you have a problem with reading and writing, I would take him. He gives great feedback and allows you to prefect your writing through a system that he perfected. If you're just wanting to take a class to receive an easy A, I would not take him. If you do take him, make sure his class is top priority! Or you wont pass!

His assignments are very easy, but he does give out a lot of work. You must stay on top of your work, and you will pass the class.
Very good teacher. Attendance is important. Clear on what he wants. Easy grader. Make sure you read! Midterm and final are incredibly easy. Worst part is memorizing flashcards.
Great English teacher , very inspirational . He gives a lot of work , but as long as you stay on top of your assignments and homework , you will do just fine . I would definetely take him again.
For 96, you are required to buy multiple books(5 or 6). Every class there a quiz you have to take from your readings. Besides reading books you have to print out articles and read them. He grades essays really easily, as long as you get to the point. If you are a creative writer this most likely is not the professor you want to take.
Staying up all night to do the homework he assigns us and then showing up to his class and finding out that very few people finished all of it and everyone also stayed up all night trying to finish it.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever came across . Professor Kempler Is the most inconsiderate professor there is. He does not care if you were on your death bed he only cares if you cannot attend his class. This class provides way to much homework this professor acts like he is the only class we have to deal with. Overall HORRIBLE!!!!!
THIS WAS THE WORST CLASS EVER !
Extremely disappointed in this professors teaching professor needs to be a little more human and understanding hes like a English teaching robot. You learn nothing this class requires a numerous amount of books you will read so much
VERY BORING CLASS YOU WILL DO THE SAME THING EVERYDAY.
Good teacher, lots of work but if you stay on top of it you will pass with an A
You will learn a lot and be given lots of help throughout the semester. All of the readings are very interesting and relatable.3 essays are given and he gives you a chance to have them peer edited and edited by the TLC before turning the final essay in. Classes got repetitive, but there were no surprises. He was very organized and always on time.
Love kempler, makes you work hard for the grade you deserve. Gives great inspirational lectures. Loved his class and would forsure retake his class. He's an amazing teacher.
English 96 was my first collegiate english class. Professor Kempler is a stickler for phone usage during class. He is a very strict professor, and the essay process is very long. Make sure to get all the books for his class; do not forget any of the books. It is best to get to them as soon as you register for the class. He will help your writing!!
worst teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst professor transfer if you can. He gives 3 hours of homework for every hour of class no exception so if you dont have all the time in the world dont take this class. Also hes just an over all not a nice guy.
Learn a lot of things great class to learn from
Best Teacher.
Kempler was one of the best professors Ive had here at College of the Canyons. He helped me improve my reading and writing skills soo much!! It will be an easy A or B as long as you take your materials with you every class meeting. Attendance is also very important because there is something new to do every time; so dont miss out! 10/10 class!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED PROFESSOR KEMPLER! He is not a tough grader; however, he has clear expectations. WELCOME TO COLLEGE!! He will not spoon feed you, you want an A then you have to work for it. If you're looking for an easy A, he is not the professor to take. However, if you want to improve your writing and get a real taste of college, take him!
The only reason why I did not drop his class was because I had to buy the book to do the annotations because I was not allowed to do them in pen or on post-its. He requires a daily journal that reflects the reading assignments. There are 3 essays that involve corrections, but don't make the original grade go up (pointless)! I do not recommend him!
Prepare yourself for daily quizzes on readings. This professor gives out homework every class meeting. He makes you keep a stash of vocabulary cards throughout the whole semester to later test you! His class gets very boring. It becomes a daily routine. Everyone has a good idea of what to expect. 3 essays only though that is the only good thing.
In the beginning of the semester there are pop quizzes on the homework everyday. Work isn't too difficult but there's definitely a lot of homework and classwork. Becomes routine and you pretty much know what to expect for every class.
The first day you walk in he seems like a nice guy. That's Where he has you. Get ready for 20-40 pages of annotations every class, then write a page in your journal about said topic using ONLY sentences patterns. Then make four vocab cards from that reading. Then get ready for another essay. This goes on for every class non-stop. Have fun.
Pretty easy class, just stay on top of the homework, and do the readings. Show up to class everyday because you don't know what quiz will be graded. You will learn a lot about structuring an essay, and how to work on run-on sentence. He is a tough grader on the essays, because he is very particular on what he wants! Improves your writing for sure!
He will only input grades if they are zeros so its very easy for your grade to drop drastically. For the amount of homework and time you have to put aside for this class you might as well take Engl103 Honors. Missing just one class will make your grade drop 10% for not taking one of his random daily quizzes. Worst teacher ever!
In general he is a nice person, but he makes you work for a grade and doesn't give specific instructions, especially on homework. A lot of annotating and due literally the next class period, so you had one day to complete homework assignments, not just one. If you're taking more than 1 class and don't like to be piled with work, don't take this.
This was the hardest class I took that semester, even though I was also taking three STEM classes. There is a lot of homework, and he grades tough. I did end up learning a lot from his class; although I had to work for it. he is extremely strict with his rules and will call you out if you break them. Good material, hard class.
It's a really hard class, a lot of people were either dropped or just stopped showing up. He grades hard and assigns a LOT of homework. He really annoyed me because he makes you go to the TLC for EVERYTHING. But I really did learn a lot in his class. He also makes you read and annotate something for literally every class so prepare for that.
He's pretty inconsiderate to college student's wallets because he makes you BUY very expensive textbooks. Renting is not an option; he wont allow you to annotate with post-its you must write in the book (which also makes the book unable to re-sell). His routine creates a hostile and irritable class environment. It is the most demanding class!
The grade he gives you on the essay is the grade you keep. He only gives you a week to do the essay and when he gives it back, you have to fix all the mistakes before turning in the next essay if not you are not allowed to turn in the next essay which you will get a zero on it. Even if you fix all the mistakes you will keep the same grade
Doesn't care for any of the students problems
I miss his class only for ONE day because I transferred from 101 to 103 last minute, and he's the only guy that fits in my schedule. Not understanding at all. I have so much to catch up on and it's like he won't even let me. He understands that not everyone has textbooks yet, but he STILL assigns so much from the textbooks. And it's barely week 2!
Not very understanding. He repeats the same monotonous routine every day; not engaging. Quiz every class meeting (should be renamed to warm-ups, really). 3+ hrs worth of homework expected to be due every class meeting (only 1 day to do it); I want to find a job and balance my other classes, but this class makes that frustrating and difficult.
Expectations are too high for a simple entry english class.
Assigns a horrific amount of work. Would post our homework on Tues, saying we had 50+ pages to read/annotate + full page of analysis on other reading (FULL PAGE or lose points) and vocab review for a test... due Thursday. Barely reasonable if this was my only class. Almost impossible with other classes and a job. VERY picky. Don't take him.
Well how can I start this? Probably by saying this teacher is not a joke when it comes to grading. Professor Kempler is very hard and the overall workload is overwhelming. Believe me when I say just dont take his class, too much work in such a very little lapse of time. I will 100% rather take another teacher than him. Good luck!
This class really does have a LOT of homework. Make sure you stay caught up on the reading annotations and journals or it will hurt your grade. Be prepared for a five minute writing quiz about the reading at the start of each class. He's a tough grader but you really learn a lot. I'm definitely a better writer after taking his English 103 class.
Professor Kempler has been one of the hardest professors Id ever had, he will assign essays and send you to the TLC to check them with a tutor. The tutor try its best to help you out but since they are not English teachers they dont know how professor Kempler specifically wants his essays to be done; consequently, he is a very tough grader.
One could only describe Kempler as one of the most detestable, obnoxious, and repulsive professors to have to deal with. He expects students to write daily journal entries in conjunction with daily book notations (which are arbitrated by superfluous standards) and assigns gratuitous HW. In short, most of Kemplers classroom habits are inessential.
He isn't as hard as people say he is. If you follow his instructions and regularly check his notifications that he sends online then you'll be fine. Also, make sure you always bring all your materials and books to every class.
I learned more in Kempler's class than all my other English classes combined.
Kempler helps you improve in reading and writing. You will learn a lot.
Although Professor Kempler has good intentions, the amount of work he assigns is completely unrealistic. He was unwilling to work with students that had jobs outside of school and would put unrealistic deadlines for essays (less then 24 hours for a 5 page paper). He also grades relentlessly and doesnt give many passing grades.
One of the hardest, difficult and obnoxious professors to deal with. I worked my ass off staying after class for hours on end but he still threatened to fail me. He is very difficult to talk to and does not care about your personal life whats so ever. He will go out of his way to give you 0 on assignments you are absent for and will Not let retake
The class was your average high school English class, he would get upset if you moved on or said that you already knew the material. He gives a lengthy written pop quiz without enough time to finish it. He also takes off points if you don't write neatly or don't finish writing your quiz. There are more things but I reached my word count.
Do the work, pass the class.
Kempler is a great teacher. If you want to learn and enjoy class, take him.
Professor Kempler taught us how to improve our thinking and writing skills. You will learn a lot and have fun.
This teacher has the most unrealistic expectations. Took this course over the summer, 5 weeks... read 3 books, wrote 3 - 5-page papers with 24 hour turn-around for each, participated in daily quizzes and discussions. He has zero care for your job, even telling you to take a day off of work to do his work, or if you have a family.
I took this class over summer and it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. You will learn a lot from the books you read during this class and the information you learn will make you look forward to the readings and assignments. Do your work, follow instructions, and participate and you'll get an A. Highly recommend!
The WORST prof I've ever had. Everyday is repetitive and the reading stacks up. Hes strict and when I went to him to get a chance to redo my essay for credit he would grade it and I would fix everything he marked then he would say more things were wrong that were not there before. He did this with me 5 times before I cried at him hes ridiculous.
Gives way too much work for no reason. Does not care about his students. He acts as we do not have other classes. Assigns homework every single day, discussion every single day, and annotation every single day. Grades hard. Do not take this class
DO NOT choose this professor if you are going to take english. He has no regard for your time. Gives loads of homework that take hours and hours every single day. Gives you no time to do homework for any other classes you may have. If you have a job I would recommend dropping the class unless you want to spend all night doing homework.
By far the most obnoxious, rude, and unforgiving Professor I have ever had. TONS of homework/reading, gives unclear/contradictory instructions, treats you like a child, always in a bad mood, forces you to write in your books (and checks them daily), gives you 2-3 minutes to write a half page essay-style quiz. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS-You are warned!

If you are majoring in English or something related he will definitely teach you alot, but if you are just taking it for the credit or have other responsibilities, dont take his class. I literally don't think I've cried more over a class in my life because of the work load. His grading is more than harsh, just don't do it.
The worst professor ever. Doesn't care if you have a job, bills or rent to pay, military work, extra circular activities etc. only cares if you do his work and turn it whenever its convenient to him in or you fail. Gives unnecessary amount of useless homework and discussions. Would recommend getting another professor because Kempler is not it.
This professor was sooo annoying and gives way too much pointless work. He makes you buy so many books and you don't even use one of them. Also, he's so rude and way too picky. He's not considerate that you have other classes besides him. DO NOT take him if you have other hard classes to worry about.
Honestly, I'm not sure what my thoughts are for this class. Professor Kempler is a very strict teacher, and he's not afraid to call someone out in an announcement just because he didn't like something that they did. Be that as it may, I still learned a lot in this course, and I wouldn't consider it to be a waste of time.
professor Kempler only thinks of himself; in fact, he states your questions are a waste of his time. The way he grades his essays is not specific he acts as if everyone is a English professor. You miss three assignments and he drops you from the class. No matter what the situation. He makes us buy 5-7 books & demands we send them to him to keep.
Professor Kempler gave a ton of homework. From the first week of class to the very end. Very picky with the way he graded. He has no remorse for students; he is very big on attendance (FYI). It was irritating that he only cared about himself. He made it seem as if other people didn't have any other classes or other things to take care of in life.
Way too much hw to begin with he wants you to be consumed with English hw. Like if people don't have anything else going on, or as if they don't have other classes to worry about. If you have a full time job or have a part time job and taking more than 2 classes please reconsider taking this class with Kempler. I lost too much sleep b/c of this guy
If you don't understand something, he will make sure to touch upon the subject again. This class has a lot of work that goes into it, but it's not hard. It should be easy to get an A or B. Because my class was online, he dropped students who missed 3 assignments. This might discourage you, but it was very helpful towards my procrastination issue.
You will learn more in Kempler's class than in any other. He prepares you for success at a university.
What a joke. I wish I had read the reviews before I signed up. Absurd workload. I am learning a lot, but it feels like hes giving a ridiculous amount of homework just to prove hes a hard teacher. His spiel about not having a job if you are in school is unrealistic. Awful, egotistical, wish I had avoided. Still have 2 months to go
The toughest class I've ever taken! I did EVERYTHING he assigned and I passed with a B. He makes you annotate every single book! Every chapter! I would never take him again. If he's the only option left then GOOD LUCK.
This class is a joke. The level of difficulty to the level of homework you get just doesn't correlate. I took English 101 and I had homework every single day that was so easy but just time consuming. He doesn't care about your work, your family, or your friends. All this professor cares about it making you suffer as long as possible. Pls avoid!!!!!
I wrote the review under too but felt like I needed more to warn about. This professor holds you to such a high level but doesn't hold himself on the same level he expects. Doesn't make assignments open on time or closes assignments too early and once he's notified it takes up to 24hrs to fix. He then still gives you the same due date and time.
Try to avoid it! Very rude at times and made multiple students cry due to their personal lives. I am thankful that I was not in person for his course the entire semester due to COVID because it was mentally draining. Keeping up with his tough grading was doable but for the amount of work and tears.... I should've enrolled in an honors class!
I won't say that the material is difficult, but the class was EXTREMELY tedious. The grading scale and assignments are laid out very clear for you, but he expects A LOT from his students. He even states to take time off work to focus on this class (so cynical). It's an intro class- don't deteriorate your mental health for it. Take another class.
This guy is so particular about details, he wants you to do things exactly his way. But his advice on essays was solid, I'll give him that. If you're good at school and want to try hard in a class, this is the guy for you. Beware, if you're the type of person who falls behind easily, he won't have mercy on you. He kinds sucks but it's ok....
Bruh, I have taken this English class during the winter semester it was so fudging amazing being in his class. His lectures are very clear, he helps out his student, and he is caring. Don't listen to the other comments about this professor (They're lazy people). Just do your work consistently and you will get an A. Essay feedbacks are very clear.
You will learn a lot in this class and you will definitely become a better writer. With that said this class is difficult and Professor Kempler is unforgiving. His rules are clearly set out but his grading scale is all over the place. Many assignments that he will give you are pass or fail and worth no points.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Kempler grades too harshly, expects too much from everyone, expects you to have no other responsibilities in life. He gives you too much homework and makes you annotate every single page of the books. He doesn't care about or respect pronouns, he is incredibly transphobic. He asked us if a SA victim in a book is responsible
there is a very heave work load, but overall, easy class
Assigns SO much work and does not give any points back for them. Most of it is busy work and reading anyways. Legit told us to quit our jobs to make time for this class. I have 3 other classes with work that does not amount to the work given in this one. Makes us relearn everything we already did in elementary school. Absolutely hated this class.
Taking his class was the worst decision ive made in my academic career. The work load he gives is ridiculous compared to the ENG101 my friends signed up for, and he is unforgiving when it comes to late work. No late work is acceptable, and one missing assignment one absence. After the 4th missing assignment you are dropped. Do not take.
This Professor is a very strict and harsh one. If you work do not take this class. You will CRY and DO HIS WORK EVERY SINGLE DAY 7 days a week. At first I was struggling hard doing work for 3 hours a day but the workload helped me learn how to do work efficiently and fast so I can have my weekend free. Dont take this class, take someone else.
I would say mediocre at best. He will assign large amounts of homework. Would take upwards of 3-4 hours to complete. The first book you're going to read is about childhood trauma and all the types of abuse from victims. so be prepared. Also, you can miss the class only three times before getting dropped. Very annotation heavy. Good at essays tho
The professor is extremely picky with his work. He has had me rewrite essays multiple times for the most minor errors. If you are prepared to spend hours and sacrifice time with friends and family take this class.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Kempler is a very well-rounded English teacher. English class is meant to develop your reading, writing, and critical thinking skills and this class nails that 100%. The at-home study is about 2 times the hours of class (exactly as COC asks you to assume). This class isn't "easy" but you'd be hard set to find a better one
My biggest regret was taking this professor. He gives an insane amount of homework, and expects you to put his class above everything else. He has even told me to quit my job or go on leave just to focus more on his class. If you care about your mental health I urge you to register with a different professor.
I took Kempler for the 2022 Spring Semester for English 101 after I failed a previous 101 class. This was a big change from the class I took before. Kempler gives out lots of work, but if you manage your time wisely, you will be fine. Additionally, he also has office hours which I really recommend going to. Just keep up on work and you will be ok.
The course talks about a lot of triggering topics such as S/A with no real disclosure, also he's very unforgiving about grades. If you miss one assignment you won't be able to do other assignments and he doesn't accept late work.
Professor Kempler is a good Professor. if you put in the work you will get a good grade in the class. i can respect a professor that Pushes students.
This class was quite difficult at first but honestly, it's all about prioritizing his homework well. It's the same routine in the class. He's a hard grader that's for sure but honestly just go through his rubric and look at what he expects and you should be good. He's straightforward about everything. Just do good on your annotations and essays.
Professor Kempler is a nit-picky, tough grader. Many of the instructions he gives for assignments are vague. There are also many required books for this course, and students are required to highlight and write in them in pen. Returning these books after the class is over is not an option, nor is renting them.
I honestly really liked the material in this course but I understand why many people don't like him. Especially for first year students, his class can get pretty overwhelming. He expects you to buy I think 5 or 6 books and annotate all of them.
He is horrible!!!!!! Not just as a professor, but as a person. He does not care about its students. He told me to pay for my schooling on a credit card... If you take this class be prepared to wait in a line outside is office for hours to get your work approved. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Professor Kempler was amazing, although there were a lot of reading assignments in which were mandatory to read I learned a lot and you get to really learn how to better understand a book as well as write an essay. Attendance is required and their is a lot of partner paired assignments so get ready to move around and discuss the reading!
LOTS of homework. LOTS of classwork Requires you to buy 5-6 books renting is not an option. You are to annotate/highlight/write in all of them and he is very picky about the way you write and how much you annotate. Must write a page of work every class (quiz), be asked to memorize 200+ words with definitions, and memorize sentence structures. Bad!
There is a lot of work, but you genuinely learn from him. After every class you have to read a chapter or chapters of the current book your reading; there are four books that you will read when reading you'll have to highlight and write at least one thing on each page. This teaches you how to annotate and read while critically thinking. ESSAYS to.
Professor Kempler was one of the worst I have ever had. If you want somebody that is boring, repetitive, strict, and nitpicking, take his class. If you fall for the obvious bait, I sincerely wish you luck.
Kempler is a great at teaching; out of all my classes, I learned the most from his. I loved the book discussions in class. I admit the homework is a lot to balance. I spent around 10 hours/week on homework for his class because of the reading, annotating, journal writing, and essay writing. He is actually very understanding if you talk to him :).
As of right now, Professor Kempler was one of the worst professors I ever had at College of the Canyons. He is very inconsiderate and rude. He is also nitpicky because if you do don't incorporate these things called hamburgers and sentence-combining options into your work, he will deduct points. Register with a different professor if you can.
He was very strict and not that compassionate. Tons of reading for homework, and journal writings. You will take several trips to the TLC and probably see if a lot during office hours. If you do not have a lot of spare time I would not recommend his class.
Great professor. Learned a lot.
Professor Kempler is an exceptionally dedicated instructor. My critical reading and expository writing skills improved greatly. His feedback was invaluable to my development as a writer, and my essays are much more polished now. If you are looking for a high-quality professor who will impact your writing mechanics, take his course!
If you're just trying to complete your basic ed, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. The amount of work you'll receive is ridiculous. He expects you to put his class as priority and DOESNT CARE if you have other classes, a job, bills, financial or family struggles etc. He will still expect you to complete all his work or you're dropped from the class.GET OUT NOW
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Sure he grades harshly. Sure he has OCD level expectations. Whatever. I dropped the class because all of his quizzes and journals are handwritten, and due to a learning disability, I have horrific penmanship. Despite this, I'd never had an issue with others, but Kempler wouldn't even bother reading it and gave them auto zeros.
All I can say to whoever is taking his class, I'm so sorry. This professor was one of the first I had at College of the Canyons, and it was the worst experience I've ever had. He gave way too many assignments that were not graded, they were only assigned to complete for the next assignment. I pray to those taking him now.
If you really care about your mental health, STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS! You will be having a breakdown with this teacher. Good luck to people who have to take this class.
It's hard to explain but I had to dropped on day 2 of class. I bought the books before class and refunded them after class and dropped the class. No regard for a students personal life. Required to have all 7 books, $70-80 dollars worth, as homework. I couldn't rely on my financial aid to cover it, I had to beg my parents for the money. What a joke
Professor Kempler's class is challenging but rewarding. The workload is heavy, with extensive reading, annotating, and essay writing. However, I found his feedback invaluable for improving my critical thinking and writing skills. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside the required textbook.
Professor Kempler is a very demanding and expects you to prioritize his class over all of your other ones. Although he does SOMETIMES give good feedback, most of it is just nitpicking every TINY mistake that you do. For example, I have completed every assignment, yet I still have a 76% in the class. FYI Be ready to spend $100+ on books to read.
Mr. Kempler is THE worst teacher I have ever had. His class was the first I ever flunked due to his lack of consideration for any other classes or responsibilities you may have. He will tell you to revise the same essay 6 times before he will accept it. If you don't, he will not let you complete the next essay. For your sake, don't take Kempler.
I took this class in summer semester, it was my first semester and it was so overwhelming, never recommend. If you are taking this class be ready to spend $100+ on study material which is total useless.
Truthfully, anyone can pass this class. The workload can get a little overwhelming at times but as long as you create a good schedule you will be fine. He could be a bit more understanding when it comes to absences, but overall he's pretty caring and wants you to succeed in his class. Intimidating but creates a great class atmosphere.
He's a hard teacher. He didn't grade every assignment which sucks because i thought that would've bumped up my grade. It's a lot of work to do and essays are the worse. you will at least go to TLC 10 times. You will go to office hours at least 4 times a month. He's a good teacher but extremely hard. Very time consuming.
This professor does not conform to your schedule. He works in a manner that forces you to forgo any other classes for his. This includes heavy reading, notebook writing, essays, and studying, among other miscellaneous things. Nobody I talked to enjoyed his class. Take that into heavy consideration.
Please consider not taking this class unless it is your last resort! he is very rude and makes sure that his class is a priority. he gives many assignments that aren't graded. I know a lot of people who failed his class. attendance is a priority if you're absent more than 3 times he will drop you from the class. please don't take his class.
He did give a lot of work, and he made sure his class was a priority. However, I am a significantly better write because of him. You read a lot of books, and do a lot of essays. The work isnt hard, it is time consuming. If you want to improve your writing skills; take his class. He is a really tough grader when it comes to most things in the class.
I would much rather have my arm sawed off than take his class again. He doesn't care if you have accommodations. I have trouble reading and understanding certain things and instead of helping and being considerate he told me “why are you taking this class”. He has no respect for his students. I would never take his class again
Professor Kempler genuinely is the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. He assigns an insane amount of work. He does not grade a large amount of the required work, yet he will take away points if it is not completed. He required us to buy books we did not touch once during the term and he nitpicks tiny mistakes. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
English is not my best subject, but I passed with a A! Very hard course; multiple hours of homework a night. I learned a lot and walked out of that class feeling a lot smarter! If you want to push yourself, take his class!
DO NOT tAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!! I literally dropped the class day 2 of this semester. I work full time to support my family and go to school full time, but he makes all assignments due at 6 pm and assigns them the morning they are due. He acts like this is not an intro class. not a good online class setup/no clear syllabus. Very rude in emails.
I'm a full time high school student and my last requirement to graduate was to take an English class I enrolled in his class and was rude in emails and didn't care about what I had to say. Made me go on campus to pick up papers, When in his descriptions he said it was 100% online. Assigned work in the morning and made it due later the same day.SAD!
A LOT of Homework due by 6PM the day of. Just reading his announcements and the assignments are overwhelming. All the books we have to purchase, 66 handouts (that he kindly printed out for his class) but he's definitely a tough grader. Would not take him again, he's two years away from retiring as a teacher he should just make this his last year.
dropped this class before the drop deadline. he gets easily irritable (I asked if I could not write directly in my books, he yelled at me), assigns way too much HW for just the first week, and doesn't like it when people ask him too many questions. if you don't care about your teacher's personality and only about how they teach, then take him ig...
If you have not dropped this class… get yourself ready. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. Maybe even spiritually. Prof Kempler expects you to write the an essay the size of a dictionary every month. Although I did learn more about writing techniques, I have forgotten them all due to the trauma this class has left me.
His class taught me to write well. Everything he taught has stuck with me. Kempler is one of those professors who is really strict, but you somehow end up having a good time anyway. You have a small quiz at the beginning of each class, and the prompt can be very specific! Also, all quizzes and other assignments are timed (strictly).
Assigns way too much unnecessary work that he doesn't even grade. Recommends working less hours to focus more on his class. It's an English 101 class at a community college, but he acts like it should be the most important thing in your life. He's a couple years from retiring, but he should do it sooner. Crazy how such an awful teacher got tenure.
If taking the online course he requires a lot of work to be done. Make sure your reading to spend at least 2-3 hours on the assignment and you get 2 assignments a week ( they have all the reading and work you will have to do)
Honestly just not a good guy. Assigns work that he doesn't grade and is not very helpful. Class is passable but make sure you follow his directions to a tea. Not sure how a guy with such a big family can have such little remorse for students.
I wouldn't call him strict, but he's VERY thorough. If you follow his directions accordingly, you will have no problem passing his class. He assigns a lot of work, but it is manageable. He can be a little intimidating but from my experience, he just wants to his students to put in the work to succeed.
The previous students rating this professor need to put their emotions to the side. This isn't high school. This professor is teaching at a college level that majority of the students need to understand. The professor is very thorough and gives detailed instructions about the assignments.
He can be tough on grading, but he makes his rubric clear. He's not entirely non-negotiable, but he doesn't accept late work. If you paid attention in high school English, it shouldn't be a hard class to pass. There's just a lot of hw due in a short amount of time. Also, the way he wants you to write essays can feel a bit rigid and weird sometimes.
An incredibly well-structured class. I learned so much about writing, annotating, and journaling, and really appreciated the professor's flexibility with time zones. The readings were interesting, and the skills I gained will stay with me. Highly recommend this course to anyone looking to strengthen their English!
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I took his online class and he made us go in person almost every week. Not only that, when I had a very very valid excuse to not be able to make it in person HE SHAMED ME FOR IT. He is such a terrible professor and doesn't care about his students at all. He requires you to buy 3 books and if you don't you fail the class.
This is the worst professor for English 101. he leave wayyy too much homework for a 101 class, grading is even worse, would give an incomplete grade if i small thing was wrong harsh on late work, i won't take him again!
Anyone who complains about this professor, yall will have trouble getting a real job. Put on your big boy pants and stop complaining. Read the books, listen to instructions and stop complaining. Stop being babies. This is a college level class. Yall are soft literally.
If you are a regular, just out of high school student, you should take this class. It will set realistic expectations for what you should do in college. If you are a working student, avoid at all costs. Balancing this workload with full-time work is a near impossibility, and he isn't forgiving of minor mistakes. Super strict, not an easy trip.
I hated this class so much. He made me hate English more than I already do. Assigns so many things I have to can't keep up to date with and is SO rude with email replies when I have a question. DOESNT ACCEPT LATE WORK. also made me drive 2.5 hrs to campus to pick up books/ syllabus for an ONLINE CLASS. This is community college not UC Berkeley.
This summer professor is pretty decent. He's passionate and good at teaching but is a tough grader, strict on formats, discussions, and essays. He gives quizzes and memorization routines. It only got easier once I adjusted by the middle or end of the term. This is my most accurate review. He was able to cut short of the works. He had mercyafterall
I believe he was a good professor. Aside from the short temper or patience, which you see a lot. He will get himself worked up before acknowledging the situation which is very alarming. If you don't mind having a professor who doesn't laugh or joke, then you wouldn't mind taking him. Definitely not a professor you want to slack on.
Not a good person at all. Assigns a essay 1 week prior doesn't want you to work on it until 4 days before it's due and also 8+ assignments he wants you to complete as well that he won't grade and give you any credit for. He picks and chooses what he'll grade.
Do not take him, seriously. It's never too late to drop this class so please do so. I don't recommend at all, you do learn but at a cost. Work takes 4 hours to do so if you're willing to take that time out of your day then proceed with caution. Majority of your work doesn't count to your grade so you'll be doing work just because.
He is serious but a good professor. Once essays are graded, they must be fixed according to his comments-wants you to absolutely perfect it. Lots of terms to memorize. 3-4 reading books must be purchased new not pre owned. Books are fascinating reads, has high expectations but with enough studying and work in, an A is definitely achievable.
He is an overall good professor! His teachings are very beneficial and interesting. Although, he is strict on his format and assigns lots of readings and hw. I'm glad I took the class but would not take it again if I had the choice to.
Professor Kempler is a tough grader; however his rubrics clearly show what he is looking for. For one essay we did multiple drafts, and by the final draft you were a better writer. The work load is heavy; however, you will grow by doing the work. During his office hours he was willing to help. All of the reading and essays have changed me for good.
My experience in this course was challenging and disappointing. The professor graded very harshly, and many students struggled. The workload was overwhelming, with hours of homework that often wasn't even graded. The strict attendance policy added more stress. Clearer expectations and less busywork would greatly improve the class.
Even though I did pass this class it was not easy at all. He will assign so much work that he chooses which he'll grade. He's very rude and cut throat. The workload is stressful and overwhelming.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!
Heartless professor, claims he “loves what he does” but the passion never showed. Barely is reliable on emailing, and when if he does answer it just reads like he dosen't care. Dosen't help out students in need, while giving horrible advice. Only good thing about it him is that he “looks” to care about what you say during work related events.
I really respected how consistent and structured his classes were. The expectations can be challenging for some students, but they teach personal responsibility. His course prepares students for real life while emphasizing empathy and resilience. One of the most impactful professors you'll have if you put in the effort and stay accountable.
His course prepares students for real life by emphasizing empathy, resilience, and accountability through meaningful assignments. Complaints about difficulty usually reflect effort, not unfairness. The work you put into this class directly mirrors the results you'll get, just like in the real world. Expect a minimum of 2 hrs of HW a day to get an A
Ok if you have to take this class for credit it's a good way to start. But I would *highly*advise that you take a different professors class because honestly I didn't like his grading policy and there was so much extra work on top of having this write essays with little time. And he would raise his voice if we didn't answer a question fast enough.
He gives a week's worth of work for you to do in 2 days, twice a week. Instead of making separate assignments, he wants his students to record a video with all the work for the week, and it had to be EXACTLY 2 minutes! He also wants you to have a picture of yourself as your profile picture, so he can 'judge your work based on your face'?
I am someone who went into the semester loving English, and I've come out hating it. If you have a job or any other activities outside of school, avoid this professor.
