Microbiology: His tests are hard but he's a good teacher. Going to class is important because most test questions are based on the material covered in class. Textbook has a lot of extra information, but only a few test questions will be based on stuff not covered in class.
He's pretty nice but his tests are difficult and extremely detailed. You really have to stay on top of the material. He gives a few extra credit questions for each exam.
Great prof. One of my favs. He explains everything very well. It is such an interesting class. He will go out of his way to meet with you and help you understand and do better on tests. There is a little extra credit on the tests. All of the info is from the lectures and class attendence is a must. I would def take a class with him again!
His tests are really hard. I studied a lot more for this class than any other class and did the worst in it. He has the most random questions on the test where you basically have to know every detail to do well on the test. Also he is a very boring teacher. I would not recommend his class to anyone
Good at teaching, explains things well. Exams are extremely hard. They go into a lot of detail. Going to class is a must if you want to pass this class.
One of the only good professors in Kent State's biology dept. He is very good at explaining everything and although his tests are difficult, it makes you know the stuff that much better in the end. The information is interesting too if you like biolofy. I'd reccomend him for sure.
I really did not enjoy this class. I found his lectures were very boring, and hard to follow. The notes were a mess, and did not always make sense like Structures & Functions. His exams were very difficult and contained a lot of useless details. The book wasn't used too often, sometimes for figures, but it pointless to get.
Microbiology: You HAVE to attend class. The book is useless and the tests are VERY hard. He's the only teacher for microbiology, so nursing majors are stuck with him. But I would not recommend him to anyone. It was my least favorite/hardest class at kent by far.
Good professor. Kind of boring. VERY VERY DIFFICULT EXAMS! they really test if you know the material or not because he digs deep. class attendance is a much. this class is a challenge.
He really tries to explain things, but his lectures can get boring. DEFINITELY GO TO CLASS!! This isnt a class you can skip, the notes he gives leave out a lot that he explains in class. Really study the material because the test questions arent straight from the notes. He asks them in a way to make sure you really understand the material.
You really need to attend lecture in order to do well on his exams, and if you do have to miss class make sure you can get the notes from someone who takes good notes. He is very clear on what you need to know for the exams so he doesn't really do exam reviews...you basically need to know everything he lectured on. I would suggest taking notes on t
hes a good teacher, go to class and get the notes because that is what the exams are. they are difficult and need to put full effort into studying. but he is a grood teacher
You can achieve an A if you go to every class, take good notes, and study at LEAST 1 hour every night. I got an A in this class by doing this. It's hard but you can get an A if you put in the time. His tests are also very very very in depth. He might mention something once in class and it could be on the test.
Definitely a hard professor. Material is understandable and what not but tests are really hard! He will not bump up your grade no matter how close you are in the end even if it is a point away. Just be prepared to study a lot and attend every lecture, book really is not needed.
Power point information very minimal. Must listen to every word that he says. Refers to the book a lot but then on the power points will not tell you were you can find that information in the book. Tests are extremely hard. Some questions were very specific and hard to study for/know that they would be asked.
I agree with the person below me. He is a great professor, does a very good job explaining things, and is extremely helpful outside of class. You HAVE to go to class! Take good notes, look over your notes daily and it is very easy to get an A. You get the grade you deserve in this clsas. Don't buy the book either. I got an A without it.
Hard professor, not a bad professor. His notes refer to the book a lot, but no pages provided. Half the figures are put online, study guides are useless, lectures are pretty dry. Difference between getting an A or B depends on effort level. Exams are pretty tricky, application style multiple choice questions. 5% extra credit was offered to us too.
Dr. Leff is a very boring professor. I had him for Human Biology and the class itself was not hard. His class is not mandatory either. I would not recommend him for this class unless you already have a good biology background.
Great Professor! Tests are tricky and you MUST study and pay attention to DETAIL! He is always willing to help and definitely shows his love for micro and is very smart! Tests aren't the best, but if you study you can get the A!
Basic Microbiology isn't a very difficult class, but it's pretty boring, so you have to pay attention. The exams are all multiple choice- some questions are simple, some are very detailed. It's important to go to EVERY lecture; even though he puts the outlines online, he adds to it in class. Also- buy the access code and do the extra credit!!
I really liked Dr. Leff. He is super nice and offers extra credit! doing the extra credit is super easy. it ends up being 20 free points at the end of the semester so why not do it? you need to go to class and take notes! you need to write down what he says, just studying the lecture outlines isn't enough. I never used the book & got an A !
I had Dr Leff for Microbiology. He really is a nice man, but he gives lecture outlines and then does go over them in class. You should go because he will say important things that aren't in the notes. There is soo much in the notes, but then when you get to the test, it is almost too narrow and I think he does add some book questions. Iffy to me.
Phenomenal professor, I sat in the front row for each class. Listen to what he has to say and write it down. Go over your notes on the weekends. And study for the exam one week prior. The book also clarifies things. Going SI helps too! Adam leff makes microbiology seem so interesting! Got a 95% in the course.
Microbiology is hard there's no doubt about that. He doesn't make it any easier. You can buy an access code for 80$ for 5 points of extra credit before every exam, 20 total. Its expensive and you probably feel reluctant to buy it but if i didn't buy it i would've gotten a B. He has 4 exams and that's all so you have to do well on them.
Leff is such a sweet heart. He is very passionate about biology and it shows in his lectures. Some lectures can be very dry but most of the time he keeps it interesting. He always has a smile on his face. I got an A without using the book, just make sure you go to class and pay attention. His exams are always based off of what he lectures
I had him for Hum Bio and I enjoyed him very much. Very clear, passionate, understanding, helpful, and a little corny... which makes his classes enjoyable. He really enjoys teaching and will take time to answer your Q's. Lectures are long and boring, but can be interesting. Do the extra credit bc it can raise your grade 5%. My favorite prof so far
Great teacher but you WILL have to study. Definitely not an easy A but not impossible to get one either. Attending lectures is important because even though notes are put online he says a lot that are not on those notes but will be on the exams.
Professor Leff goes into a lot of fine detail during the lecture, you need to write everything he says down. Print out the lecture outlines he posts online. He's not awful, but it's not an easy A.
For microbiology, he has four exams (last of the four being the final which is non-cumulative). He does give AMAZING extra credit you just have to buy an online access code and do the online work. There is one extra credit for each exam, do them and they add 5% to each exam. Well worth the money, it boosted my grade up to an A.
Left is very gentle and a clear cut professor. Don't waste your money on the textbook. And DO buy the online extra credit. The class is Microbiology; its going to be difficult. Go to every class and study to the best of your ability. He is very helpful and I thought I would hate this subject, but I actually ended up loving it! Put in extra effort!
Dr Leff is doing work, he has got the clad down and taking it with him is a great choice. He reminds me of my dad and that makes me want to pay even closer attention
Dr Leff is the greatest laid back professor ever He loves to talk about viruses pathogens and anything that deals with the microscopic world you can tell he enjoys what he does and loves to help his students who truly show an interest for doing well and finally moving on to the kents nursing program just expect hard exams especially exam 3
Dr Leff is a beloved professor very kind a little shy at times but I wish more professors can have his teaching ability Throughout the semester he gave extra credit points out for completing the online connect assignments that totaled up to 20 extra credit points at the end of the semester which pushed my grade up a whole letter grade
Because of Dr Leffs extra credit points which totaled up to 20 extra points I will be able to get into the nursing program with a very high competitive GPA Goodbye prenursing HELLOOOO nursing program
Great professor. He really loves microbiology and you can tell by how he lectures. He's a super cute old man and reminds me of a grandpa. Go to class, buy the extra credit and it should be an easy A. I came in scared because I heard how hard micro is, but if you come to class and take good notes you'll be fine.
I didn't have Dr. Leff for my bio lab, I had a grad student. But the lab itself is very easy. You just have to show up, take a quiz on the lab last week, do this weeks lab, and leave. It was so simple. No homework besides studying for the quiz and only one project and its an easy group powerpoint project. Very basic biology lab. I would take again!
I had Dr. Leff for Microbiology. he is an awesome sweet genuine professor. very approachable. go to class take good notes (maybe even record his lectures, i did) and study your notes. he likes true and false questions. as long as you take good notes and study easy A
Studied very hard for the first two exams. Watched videos, retook notes, asked questions. I felt positive I would receive an A. My midterm grade was an F, even though I felt good about how well I was doing. Withdrew from the class so it wouldn't affect my GPA. Have to retake in fall.
Nice guy, but a horrible teacher.
He has lecture outlines, but they aren't helpful. You only have 4 exams and 4 5 point quizzes (that are actually pretty hard) so one bad grade will hurt you. His lectures are drier than toast. The only good thing is his exams aren't cumulative. You can get by without the book, unless you plan on skipping a lot.
I love Dr. Leff, he's a great teacher and his exams are very straight forward. It requires intensive studying but as long as you're willing to put in the work, you'll most likely get an A. I currently have a 91.75 in his class and look forward to going to his class. Nice guy, available for questions after lecture, wish I had him for all my classes!
I was not a big fan of him. He took extra credit away so all you have are the exams. If you do bad on any of them, you're screwed. On one of the exams, there were more F's then A's and B's combined. He also was not helpful when you go to talk to him. He tells you to just study more. His outlines are also awful.
Dr. Leff is very passionate about micro biology. He took away the extra credit so there is only the tests and 4 five point quizzes in the class. You have to know his notes word for word to do good on the tests.
If you're a pre nursing student and you're out there hustlin for those A's , take an L on this one. You practically have to be perfect in this class to get an A. Adam is the cutest old man tho, his accent made me giggle. figure out a way to organize your notes early cause his lecture outlines can be a little wacky. Go to SI if u serious about it
The class is lecture based. His class is 100% do-able. Print out his outlines, and write down EVERY word he says. Then in a spiral notebook combine the outline and the notes. and study THAT. memorize every little thing. The tests are not tricky and are so straightforward. I highly recommend him. But get ready to study. Also, he is v approachable.
Very hard class, one bad grade and your prenursing science gpa will be down the drain. Write down every single thing he says, thats where most of the info will be from. nice guy, just needs better outlines or give study guides to clear out what to know from the load of dense info he throws at you
Super smart dude, super nice. Asks the most specific, unimportant, detail oriented multiple choice questions I've ever seen. If you don't know every little thing, you're not going to do well.
The only reason my nursing career is in the drain is thanks to this class. I had to withdraw the first time or else I would have a D on my report card. Coming to class a second time, and it may still keep me out of the nursing program. I have mostly A's, and a couple B+'s, but his class is tanking everything 've worked for.
He's alright I guess, his study guides are more like outlines and he doesn't give a clear idea of what is going to be on the exam. Sometimes things covered on the exam aren't in the review. Meaning you HAVE to read the chapter in the text book. Exams usually cover 3 to 5 chapters and chapters are around 25-30 pages long. Makes a core class harder.
Dr. Leff is super knowledgable and is willing to help whenever you need it. I studied for each exam starting a week prior and did just fine on them. It is a lot of work and there is a lot of information, but you have to be willing to put the time in. Tests are tough, but everything on the test is in the notes. Study guides outline everything.
A lot of people struggled with this class, but I feel like that has more to do with it being a freshman level course than how he taught it. If you pay attention and take good notes, you should have no problem getting an A. He very clearly explains challenging concepts, but with that said, he doesn't dumb down his exams so everyone gets an A.
Do not take this class. Take it online at another campus, this is the WORST class I have ever taken.
Dr. Leff is an awesome professor. The only downside to his class is that he only has a limited number of points to get. 4 tests400 points and only 20 points worth in quizzes. It is hard to pull out an A with the little number of points. Gives outlines to lectures also.
Dr. Left is an amazing professor with a very difficult subject to teach. The class is very test heavy- no extra credit, and you need to write down everything he says- literally. I record his lectures. Do not expect to miss class and pass the exams. Other than that, hes an adorable older man who really loves biology.
Personally, I think he makes this class much harder than it needs to be. His lecture outlines are poorly formatted and sometimes disorganized. You have to do really well on exams to get an A. Hes a nice man in general, but expects you to memorize every single word said in lecture. Go to class, take good notes, and you should be good.
Great guy and is really funny. Tough course with heavy material and grade is only based on 4 exams! The class motto is "you need to know everything to get an A"
I am an A student and this class was a struggle for me. Very difficult as it is solely based on 4 tests and 4 quizzes. Tests were slightly difficult, so if you get a C on one, it is very difficult to raise it to an A. I got a B and am probably going to have to retake this at some point, but definitely not with the same prof
Dr. Leff is a great professor. You have to work really hard to get an A. Write down everything he says.
This is the hardest class I have taken at Kent State. He expects you to know every detail... and his tests are really tricky.. I really don't recommend this class to anyone.
Adam Leff is an outstanding professor. He genuinely cares about his students. The lectures are very heavy and in order to pass the exams with an A, you have to know everything he presented in his lecture. My best advice would be to record his lectures on your phone and study everything before walking into his exam!!
Dr. Leff is a fine professor, however not the most exciting. He reads directly from power points, which makes it hard to want to go to class. His tests very very difficult and tested on minute information. He is a very nice man and is willing to help if you go to office hours.
There are a lot of lecture slides that he covers before the tests so it can be a little stressful but at the end of the semester he bumped up everyone's grades so they got at least a 75.
Took this class for my pre-nursing requirement. Everyone hyped this course up to be harder than it was. If you go to class, take good notes, and study you will have no problem getting an A.
hardest class i have taken at kent state. I was a junior with a good GPA taking his biodiversity class and struggled hard. I went to all the lectures, and studied so hard and continued to get the worst grade I have ever gotten in my college career.
Exam are almost impossible to pass and unless you know every single detail you wont do good. Hes a very boring professor and reads straight from the lecture slides posted on blackboard
reading his previous reviews i think he got way worse over time.
Memorize, memorize, memorize. Memorization is key to doing well on exams. And, if you don't do well on those exams, good luck on bringing your grade up. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't go to class it's hard to understand some topics. Lecture slides are online which do help for studying. Lectures are kind of boring so good luck.
Dr. Leff gives you all the information you need to succeed in his lectures. This class will make you learn good note-taking skills. A lot of people recorded the lectures because his exams get pretty detailed. Put in the work and you'll do fine. Really sweet guy who loves what he teaches and it shows! Also, as a bonus he's a super fast grader!
Micro is a difficult course to begin with, but make sure that you know everything in lectures, take good notes, and utilize the textbook to better your understanding of the material. He provides you with lecture outlines, figures, and responds to e-mails fast if you have questions. Utilize all resources & you will succeed. Otherwise, good luck
Dr. Leff is an extremely smart man. He loves what he does and it really shows. I had him for Biological Diversity and this class is a lot of work. You need to take good notes and get ready to study because it is necessary to be successful on the exams. I had his class during remote learning, so it was slightly different. Overall, good professor!
Microbiology is a tough class. Dr. Leff does well in his lectures to break down the subject matter! Take good notes, use the book and youll do fine.
Make sure you read his outline and take good notes of the lectures. My only complaint was that your grade is based of 4 exams. But he does a good job of explaining material in his lectures.
He is a very lecture based professor. The grade is based on only 4 exams, so be prepared to study, hard. Take a notebook, and not only write down the slides, but what he is also saying as well as he tests on things he says, and on the finer details. This grade will take a lot of studying, but is passable.
Worst class Ive had yet. Boring lectures that drag on, way too much material to go through on each exam. On top of not being open note tests, I had easily 20 pages of notes per exam to look through. Good guy by all means, just not a good class to take in the middle of a pandemic. So goodluck!
Worst professor Ive ever had. Whenever we had problems or questions and emailed him he would fluff them off and not care. He only gave us four tests for our grade for the semester. He never taught either we had to learn everything ourselves
Dr. Leff is a very uncaring person. His lecture videos are over an hour long and without watching his videos, you will FAIL his exams. Everything he says will be on the exam!! This class is more about memorization than actually understand what is going on. His class only has 450 points and the four exams are 100. you can't fail an exam or its over.
Professor Leff is a really nice guy and cares deeply about what he teaches but I do not recommended him to students that need more assignments to learn the material. He only gives you lectures, no homework at all. This class was so unbelievably hard. But again, a very nice guy.
Take good notes, Cornells notes actually. Dont waste your time feeling overwhelmed with the material. Trust the process and take notes based on everything he says. Then, the next day go try to understand the material. Then, when youre done, make flash cards called anki. This class is pure understanding combined memorization. Its an simple A+!!!
He clearly did not transition to online school well at all. Hours upon hours of lecture videos every week, 4 weeks between each big exam, 4 exams (add up to 400 points), and 4 quizzes (worth 5 points each). You seriously have to watch the lectures & take note of what is on the slides AND what he says. Doesn't care about his student's concerns:/
Dr. Leff added about 3 hours of lecture every Sunday, so make sure you watch them. His tests are straight from his lectures so good notes are a MUST! This class is just memorization so as long as you can memorize notes, you should be fine. There were only 4 exams so you have to do well on each exam in order to keep an A. But overall, its not bad
Hardest class I've taken in my life. He barely helped us and there were barely any grades for the class. With this being said, it was hard to pull up your grade because of how little point opportunities that were given. Absolutely awful!
Dr. Leff is one of the hardest professors I have ever had. His lecture videos are extremely lengthy and almost every single thing he says is on the exam. I have to re- take the class to even be considered for the nursing program and I would never take his class again.
This class isn't hard if you know how to study. I recommend knowing what study method works best for you beforehand. If you like biology then the material is really interesting. Watch all the lectures and take note of everything he says. He's a nice guy and the class isn't as scary as people say if you put the effort in. Very exam heavy.
Many of these reviews scared me going into this class, but if you work very hard you will not do bad. The only grades for this course are the 4 exams and quizzes, so make sure you are studying a LOT. I personally worked my hardest, and considering the difficulty of this class, I am not upset with my grade. Dr. Leff does not hold office hours also.
You really have to know how to study for this class. He isnt a bad professor but there is a lot of information so he goes through it fairly quick. I took this class online and it was nice to watch the lectures, I could stop them when I wanted and take my time with my notes. I probably wouldnt have done as well as I did if I took it in person.
Does not outline lecture exam coverage, hours worth of lecture recordings each week, terrible at responding to emails, displayed unwillingness to work with students to better help them
only 4 exams and 2 quizzes, difficult to get grade up. VERY detailed exams. will not give help even when asked. No extra credit and no curving of exams. take it at a different campus if you can
I've had Dr. Leff for two different classes, and I've learned the most from these classes than any other classes at Kent. His exams are challenging, and you have to watch the lectures, but he explains difficult concepts well. The grading criteria and expectations are extremely clear. I wish I could take all of my science classes with Dr. Leff.
I had Dr. Leff for online bio diversity and it was really overloaded and with minimal engagement from him. Lectures were lengthy and not too out of the ordinary, but you only have 4 tests to make your grade plus some quizzes. You really need to know the content or be great at winging it. He also made really weird office hours. Not super helpful
I took Adan Leff for Microbiology and in my opinion, I found it difficult. If you are someone who struggles with science, I recommend you pick a different professor. There was a total of two quizzes and four exams which made it harder to bring up your grade. There are no homework assignments or extra credit, so don't waste your time asking him.
I've had Leff for 2 years for microbiology. I had to retake it because my grade was too low to be accepted into my program. He did not change a single thing from last year 2 quizzes & 4 test(proctored)does not leave room to get your grade up doesn't care about his students & does not help when you ask for it personally. don't take this class!!!
Leff has been by far the most difficult professor I have ever had. I took bio diversity with him and struggled immensely. If you want a good grade you will have to spend hours everyday of the semester studying. He was not helpful to students and seems to not care about his students succeeding. He provides no material outside of lengthy lectures.
I had Dr. Leff for Biodiversity and if I could go back and choose a different professor, I would. The lectures were 100% online and there was atleast 4 hours worth of videos to watch each week. Your grade relies on some quizzes and 4 exams and that is it. As someone who is normally a B average student, this is the hardest class I have ever taken
Took bio div. with him, seems nice enough but it was horrible. The lectures were 100% online and the in-person labs didn't line up at all. There are HOURS worth of lectures every week and the material seemed only somewhat relevant to quizzes/exams. He's very had to get ahold of if you have a question. Extremely disappointed as a science major tbh..
I took this class online. The recorded lectures were long but that's because he talks so slow. There is a lot of information. Pay attention to the examples he gives because they show up on exams. Make quizlets for the names/groups of organisms. This class is not hard but you have to study to memorize stuff. He is nice and passionate about the topic
I had Leff for Bio Diversity and the lab was fine but his lectures were all online and were very long. His tests were hyper specific and harsh, would definitely recommend studying for a long time before the tests. Also the final was worth a huge portion of our grade so not my vibe
Very lecture heavy. Everything on the exams are in the notes (but theres about 20+ pages of notes for each exam). This class is all memorizing. Leff gets a bad wrap because people dont always do the best because this is a more difficult course. He is a super chill guy and very understanding
Grading is only based on 4 exams and 2 quizzes so it's definitely challenging; however, I learned so much. As long as you go to class and work hard you will be fine. I made quizlets based off the outlines he provides and did well on all of the exams. Just don't procrastinate! He even says in lectures what you should specifically focus on.
An overall great guy, however, his lecture material and his exams are extremely heavy. There is A LOT of material he covers, so studying just one or two nights doesn't cut it. Take a few weeks to review his material, and go to SI and tutoring. exams 50 questions each & 2 online quizzes, so you don't have much wiggle room! Prioritize your studying!
Dr. Leff is a very sweet person outside of lecture. A lot of people dislike him because his class is so difficult but I feel he is a good guy. You have 4 exams and that is all your graded on and the exams are application based and his wording is very confusing. Good luck
Had him for Bio Diversity, and he sucked. He never made an appearance in class, so I could never tell you what he looked like. I emailed him about something in class and he didnt even know what was going on in his own class! His online lectures are boring and unnecessary, I just took notes and passed. Even the TA wasnt great. Good luck.
He's a great guy, but this class was the one I struggled with the most. There's only 4 exams and 2 quizzes, so definitely prioritize your studying! YOU NEED TO TAKE EXCELLENT NOTES IN LECTURE IF YOU WANT TO PASS. He doesn't share the powerpoints unless you have SAS accommodations, so you have to pay extra close attention to what he says. Good Luck.
Not as bad as people make him out to be. Took microbiology with him and passed with a high B. Everything he goes over in the PowerPoints are on the exams. The notes are about 20 pages for each exam so give yourself a lot of time to study and youll pass. Theres 4 exams and 2 quizzes, and the final is NOT cumulative
Leff's class wasn't something I was all that excited about in the beginning, but I grew to have an appreciation for both microbiology and Leff's experience. I wouldn't say this class is easy by any means, but if you are willing to put in the work and study, you should be just fine.
oh my god the most boring professor ever. So hard to pay attention because he's just in a monotone state the entire lecture and it's boring information. Graded by 4 exams and 2 quizzes. I studied a ton for the exams and still didn't do well. I don't know anyone who did really well in his class... or even got an A for that matter.
Made me send him my grandmother's obituary to "prove" she died when I needed an extension; didn't even offer a single condolence. Had HOURS of lecture videos every week; this class was not designed for anyone to get an A in. A rude and dismissive professor. Take literally anyone else, but don't take him.
There are only 4 exams and 2 quizzes and that's all the grades that you get throughout this entire course. PRIORITIZE STUDYING AND TAKE GREAT NOTES!!! Pay attention because the things he says throughout the lecture actually are on the exams. Take pictures of the things he has on the slides because he will quiz you on them. Good luck!!
His lectures are long and boring. He is so monotone and just tells you information after information, which can be a lot to understand. He takes it very seriously. I asked for help and he told me to keep doing what I was doing which wasn't helping me pass but in his eyes it was. I don't recommend him. He grades off only 4 exams and 2 tiny quizzes.
This class is no easy feat, but with focus and the right tools, you can succeed. Prioritize studying, take excellent notes, and utilize resources like quizlet and Unstuck study for exam prep. The professor is understanding, just don't slack off. With dedication, you can get through this challenging course.
