Absent-minded, nice guy, semi-difficult tests
No Comments
He's great to keep you awake at 8am!!
Good GUy, Good labs
Well worth waking up at 8 AM. Animated and likes his demos, though they might not always work. Prepares you for the exams better than the others.
I did not like him. Went to him once and was not helpful so I did not bother going back again. I ended up not going to class for over half the semester, I thought he wasn't as good as cracked up to be. I attended a couple sessions of other professors a
he designs orgo labs from hell. therefore the labs and prelabs (not usually) are hard to complete. just pray that you have an easy lab TA. cuz list is no help whatsoever. he is evil
List's labs were easy. If you think they're hard, I cringe to think of what you'll think of upper-level chem/bio courses or med school courses. You'll be wishing you had Dr. List's labs back. This guy is incredibly nice and easy to talk to. Take him!
Easiest labs ever. You think these are hard, don't take any more lab sciences.
He gives occasional lectures that are nice and helpful. His lab notebook has some problems in it. Some of the prelab questions may be a bit difficult, but there are TAs to help you.
nice guy. funny. can be hard if you havent already had some chemistry. keeps you awake most of the time especially if you have him for 8 oclock.
he's a nice, funny guy, but not a great teacher. his notes are disorganized and unclear. has great demos to wake you up though.
Orgo lab with Adam is easy as pie. The labs themselves are usually pretty quick and are hard to screw up on. A lot of your experience will be the TA, so pray for a good one! Other than that, the reports aren't bad. Go see him if you need help on lab stuff or just anything w/ the chemistry dept.
I enjoyed his classes, partly because the demos were pretty entertaining. He pretty much skimmed through a lot though, and did not really prepare helpful notes and guides like Hanusa did. But other than that, he's a great professor. I am looking forward to taking orgo with him next semester.
Cooky professor. Great person. Makes boring material into interesting material. The class is hard anyways.
Really nice guy who tries to help, but doesn't succeed. Is never thorough enough. My notes from that class were basically useless on the exams, halfway through the semester I gave up going to class and just studied the book.
i took orgo over the summer with him.super hard.i hate the third test and the final.too much question and too little time. he gets confused while explaining the material.

Nice guy, decent teacher. It's a difficult class no matter who the professor is.
really really nice guy even if he's not the best teacher in the world...It may not seem like much, but you'll miss him later, when you have to deal with other profs and realize that most science teachers here are just way too full of themselves.
dr. list's labs are easy! lab reports are pretty easy to write...but most of your orgo lab experience will depend on the TA.
yeah, your lab experience is pretty much TOTALLY dependent on your TA...I don't say how people can conclusively say orgo lab is hard or easy..it all depends on who you get
This guy is of shady(sketchy) character. Just look at him. Tests are skecthy (a couple problems could have several potential answers)His math is sketchy (can't add 25+273 in his head or on the board), and the TA's are sketchy in their grading. Experiments don't work(sketchy TA's fault.) This whole class is shady. Cross over and use Prasad's notes.
this is for my wonderful TA
Dr. List is very helpful and a really nice guy. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material and really simplifies it. His tests are pretty easy too.
He's engaging enough, but it's a boring subject.
Professor List is a fun professor. He has a lot more spunk than the other chemistry professors, but he is oftentimes more bumbly and mistake prone than others. He should be a high school teacher, it seems more fitting. I haven't done well on the exams, and I have had to put in a lot of work just to get the grades I have been having, class averag
Take Phillips, Phillips is definitely the best followed by List- NEVER take it at 8 a.m., I thought I'd go to every class but everyone misses it at least once when it's at 8 a.m., makes it much harder to pay attention
It doesnt seem like he cares about teaching gen chem and it shows in his lectures...hes more of an orgo guy. His lectures were very boring and hard to sit through especially at 8 in the morning. Take Phillips if possible!
He didn't seem very interested in teaching intro chem but he did know his stuff. I didn't get as much out of this class as I would have liked.
8am classes are actually tolerable because of his energy-although still in need of a healthy dose of caffeine to stay awake. READ TEXT BEFOREHAND-extremely helpful. Problems done in class are VERY close to problems you'll see on exams. Go over exams with him, but get a tutor for concepts. LOTS of time needs to be put into this class. Decent prof.
He was hilarious and made the 8-a.m. classes worthwhile. He definitely hates gen chem and probably should teach the chem kids who got a 4 on the AP exam and couldn't opt out of orgo at Vandy. But I'd say he was fair . Good teacher overall. I had some good laughs.
He keeps it somewhat funny. Its an 8am class, i need to stay awake!!
List is an amazing teacher, and by far the best in the chem department! He was very clear in his lectures. He focused on the class understanding how to do the math concepts in chem, which is what the majority of the tests and exams are over. The tests in chem are hard, but I think he bests prepares you for them; he teaches 8 AM, but it's worth it!
At first, you think he's cool. Then you realize that his lectures are pointless, the clicker questions are often ambiguous and unanswerable and he's incapable of spelling elementary words and doing mental math. He's a nice guy, but being in his lecture renders you woefully unprepared for the miserable departmentalized tests. READ THE TEXTBOOK.
Three Words: READ THE TEXTBOOK. This guy is not good at lecturing and wastes too much time talking about things that are not on the exam. CHEM 102A is standardized so it doesn't really matter which professor you have. The textbook will be your best friend.
Although I was not excited about having an 8am chem lecture, I am glad that I had List as my professor this semester. He's not boring or monotone, so it was easy to stay awake in his class, and for the most part, he teaches with clarity. He's a funny (in a cheezy way) guy, and I would take another class from him.
Lots of jokes (corny, but hey, he tries!) Really good about office hours; will take your questions pretty much anytime. Overall nice guy who looks out for his students.
Tries to make jokes in class. All of them are corny, but funny. He does a pretty good job of teaching. Never been to office hours but heard good things. He responds to emails. You may learn more from reading the textbook and mastering chem than actually going to class. The experiments in class are cool. If you can, try to get into Todd's section.
Pretty good lecturer; jokes are pretty good, especially for being at 8 in the morning. Does a good job of preparing you for the exams. Clicker questions and online homework will do wonders for you though too.
This class was super easy compared with ap chemistry. super easy. you could sleep through class and get an a. the book is very helpful. study the book and do a lot of practice problems and you'll be fine. this class is the easiest by far ive taken at vanderbilt.
Very confusing in class-did not explain things well or give adequate test preparation. very hard course if you did not take ap chem
Extremely not clear, didn't know how to solve problems assigned. Unnecessary Useless work that didn't help for exams or understanding chemistry. Questions given for review and in class were childsplay in comparison to the caliber of exams. Take Phillips or Somewhere Else. Oh & the textbook sucks, get Chang Gen Chem if you want to learn.
Cool guy. He has a dry sense of humor, and he tries to crack jokes. If you are annoyed by that, don't take his section. He's pretty clear in his explanations. Just read the book and do problems and you will do fine!
He is a cool guy, but his lectures are very confusing and hard to follow. He jumps around a bit. I had to spend a lot of time outside of class reading the book to understand the material.
Loved him! Fun to listen and attend lectures. Class is difficult, studying outside of lecture required. Clicker questions were medium difficulty, and there were sometimes (~4/50 Qs) "easy" or "giveaway" questions to boost clicker score. Tests difficult and involved both formulas and concepts, but got easier with good studying habits.
About as good as it gets for the first half of Chem. Can use clicker questions for extra credit rather than going to recitation. Tests are standardized across all sections so make sure to study the textbook and/or get your hands on past exams.
Hilarious
If you didn't take AP Chem, this class is going to be hell for you. He's not the least helpful professor I've ever had, but he's at the bottom of the list. His lectures are hilarious and will keep you awake though (even when he does suddenly announce that he doesn't care about gen chem). You definitely need the text to keep up with what's going on
List is a pretty good professor but has a tendency to get off topic and talk about things that aren't covered on the tests. You'll have to read the textbook consistently if you want to do well since the tests are standardized. He's a friendly guy and sometimes tells cheesy jokes.
Stay away from List if you can. His lectures MIGHT cover 13 of what will be on the test. By the end of the semester, I wondered why I even went to class. Waste a lot of time making jokes and goes off topic. Take Todd if you can. She has the highest class average.
Long, boring lectures. Sit in on other professors' lectures instead.
I loved List! I'm glad I had him over Todd, who seems overrated to me. List was always lively and laid-back at 9am and his notes are clear and prepare you well for the test. I had never taken AP Chem and am not a chemistry genius and got an A- in the class. Attendance is obviously not mandatory but its best to go and get notes.
Dr. List was capable of teaching the material while throwing in a joke or two. He was available to his students if needed. However, he is normally not the one who writes the tests, at least in general chemistry.
Professor List is very passionate about organic chemistry, not so much gen chem. He doesn't make the tests, which are considerably difficult. Gets distracted and flustered easily in lecture with his own jokes and drawing irrelevant inorganic molecules. If you don't read the textbook you won't pass. Lectures don't help.
Awkward, unapproachable, unclear, & inefficient (ends 5-10 min early). Took attendance with clickers and it's a small part of your grade, but I stopped going halfway through the semester because he was more confusing than helpful IMO. Only thing I liked about his class is that he wrote out every step on the board when he gave us example problems.
He does A TON of examples in lecture, which is good for homework help but not great for the truefalse kinds of conceptual questions on the test. Reading the textbook can help with that. Tests are challenging. Expect to have to work for an A. This is a weed-out class, especially first semester so I don't recommend taking it unless you have to.
Average lecturer. Gets the points across and is good at speaking. Encourages questions. Willing to help outside of class. Easy to understand but a little dry
List was very confusing and he even confused himself a few times like he did not know what he was doing. Step into his office, it looks like a tornado came through, which reflects on his teaching style. He never finishes the material we need for a test and leaves out the concepts actually tested on. Take Todd, she makes the tests & gives notes.
He's ok. If you read the textbook, do the homework, and really put in the time to master the material you can definitely get an A. Todd is a better lecturer though (plus she writes the tests), so if you don't have any experience with Chemistry I would recommend taking her. Also he thinks he's a lot funnier than he is.
He's very entertaining. Just show up, take good notes, and study and you should be fine.
List is a great guy and wants you to understand the material, but sometimes he doesn't explain the concepts in the most clear ways. You can expect clicker questions once or twice a week, and those are pretty helpful for conceptual test questions. His lectures don't cover everything but if you study, you'll do well. He's pretty funny, too.
Lecture didn't cover much. I hadn't taken Chem since sophomore year, so jumping back into it was struggle. Essentially learned everything from the textbook and my engineering friends.
Decent teacher and pretty entertaining guy. I only showed up to maybe half the classes because they weren't too useful as long as you went over the PPTs and clicker questions at home, which were great resources for tests. You'll also want to read the textbook.
I found professor List to be very boring. He makes so many mistakes during class that it's hard to keep up. Never seems like he knows what he is doing, but he does get everything covered to some extent. Of all the chem professors, I'd put him somewhere in the middle.
He seems like a nice guy and tries to add some humor into his lectures. I think the biggest problem is that he isn't able to simplify chemistry enough to teach an intro class. He is knowledgeable, but doesn't explain the concepts very well. You will be better off reading straight out of the chemistry book during class than listening to his lectures
By far the worst teacher I've had. Didn't learn a single thing in the lectures, only went because of the clicker questions. Had to basically teach myself General Chemistry, which is hard enough on its own. I wouldn't recommend taking from him.
Professor List is funny and clearly knows a lot about chemistry, but he often goes on tangents about the history of certain experiments and derives equations, stuff you won't need to know for the departmentalized exams. If you don't know the material well you'll need to read the book.
He was a nice and entertaining guy. Towards the end of the year, I stopped going to lectures, but when I did, I thought he was pretty clear and understandable. I relied more on discussion for extra credit, but some test questions were very similar to his clicker questions. However, aside from his PPTs, prepare to read the textbook. You'll need it.
Professor list teaches what is necessary for Gen Chem, but will get tripped up on his notes and go off on tangents during lectures. He was helpful during office hours, but the book was more valuable than his lectures. He is a decent professor, but Gen Chem is too standardized to tell how effective he really is.
Professor List is a poor lecturer. He finds himself underprepared at times and struggles doing simple addition. Closely follows his lecture plans and also attempts to make jokes. He is mediocre at best.
List is a great teacher that has a great sense of humor and keeps his class both engaged and entertained. His lectures are straightforward and he is very helpful and receptive during office hours.
Good teacher and answers questions if you ask. Funny at times.
Professor List is a great teacher. He wants to answer questions so make sure to ask in class.
List is very accessible and very funny. He wants to answer questions that students have. The class is too standardized to see how effective he really is as a teacher though. Lectures are a bit helpful but the book is way better.
Dr. List was a decent professor, but nothing special. He taught the required material, but often times he got confused by his own calculations. He was very friendly and was always willing to help. Clicker questions in his class are great for you if you choose not to go to discussion. The tests are standardized, but very doable if you read the book.
Great professor! Very helpful.
He's a really nice guy, but a bad lecturer. He forgets to mention like half the material that the other chem profs teach, so you have to read the book or get notes from friends in other sections to be ready for the discussion quizzes and tests. He's very silly though and makes lectures entertaining, but you can't rely on them to pass.
List is a dad with a UChicago degree. While he is enthusiastic about the material and sometimes funny in lectures, he skips half the material required to know for his tests which are impossible if you rely on the lectures only. The TAs are your only saviors should you take List's General Chemistry, which I advise you not to do. Pick another prof.
I wouldn't recommend Professor List if you have never taken chemistry before. However, if you are comfortable with the basics, take him because he does entertain and it makes that early morning lecture a little more bearable. He does get tripped up basic calculations sometimes, but he makes up for it by banging his head on the board in frustration
I had Dr. List for Gen Chem and for Orgo Lab. In orgo lab, I liked him so much more! He went through each bay at times, and he was very helpful when needed! My partner and I didn't understand a concept, but he explained it very clearly. I liked orgo lab so much more than gen chem lab, and the work wasn't too bad. It also depends a lot on your TA.
List is a great guy and entertaining in lecture. He covers the minimum of what you need to know. Overall, Gen Chem is tough but reading and minimizing silly mistakes allows you to do well. Beware the final, be sure to review at the end of the semester.
List is honestly a great guy who is super funny and makes lectures interesting. He's not going to be super helpful in terms of teaching for what is going to be on the test but since all the gen chem tests are the same the professor really doesn't matter that much. Overall List is fine.
List really makes chemistry lecture interesting. He is such a character, in the best way, and he really seems to want everyone to succeed. General chemistry is tough, especially since the tests make up most of the grade and they're fairly hard. But List is a great choice for a lecturer and explains things really well.
Lectures felt rather disorganized--sometimes entire slides would be skipped after he glanced at them. Was lost on days when he left his notes at home. Not great at re-explaining in a different way if asked. Very friendly during office hours, willing to stay extra long to get everyone taken care of. Not familiar with the online work (Dr. Todd is)
Nice dude. Definitely is a better orgo professor than gen chem. Tests are relatively easy if you study and follow the lecture material. Only thing is that when he is in a rush to lecture or fit something in the exam he gets sloppy with his teaching but other than that good professor and would recommend
This was probably the hardest class I've ever taken, but Dr. List was still a great professor. He's really sweet and his fascination with organic chemistry is quite evident in lecture, yet he can make (and correct) the casual mistake from time to time. His tests are fair (easier than others') and Top Hat gives a HUGE boost to your final grade.
Dr. List is awesome! He was so accessible outside of class and he genuinely wanted us to learn and do well. He is also passionate about the subject which really helps. It is a very involved class, but if you study regularly, then an A is definitely attainable.
100% take List if possible for 2221. An A is only 92% and there is 4% extra credit plus points for recitation and a mechanism workbook. Exams are much more straightforward than Hare's. 70% predict the product, very little mechanisms and synthesis and some naming. Take advantage of the first test, it is super easy (average was 83 last year).
I would highly recommend Dr. List. lectures are informative but must read the book out of class. Do all the recommended practice problems. Tests are easier than Hare's plus you get 1 hour 30 minutes for Lists exams instead of 50 for Hare. A/A- is doable
List was clearly not used to teaching TR classes. He did not cover all the material that you are expected to learn in orgo 1. We were supposed to finish chapter 13 and barely got through chapter 12. His lectures are dull and uninspired. He doesn't really seem to care about students
One of the poorer scheduling decisions i've made. Incredibly nice guy but the lectures are very poor and confusing. His tests are fairly doable (many predict the product questions) and usually you get more time for his exams but prepare to study 100% by yourself. I suggest to take another prof. to be prepared for Orgo 2 or the MCAT.
While List gave easier tests, his lectures were so boring that his class averages weren't that much higher than Hare. He had high standard deviations which means he wasn't teaching the material, students either knew it from previous studies/ their own learning or they knew none of it. My suggestion: do lots of practice problems, I didn't do enough.
One of the worst professors I've ever had in terms of teaching ability. Often confused, unprepared, and distracted in class. Doesn't seem to read his lesson plans before going through them. Sometimes he will skip entire slides and sometimes he will spend the entire class on one slide. Nice guy, but not a good teacher.
Dr. List is the man. By far the best orgo teacher and a complete character.
When comparing him to another organic professor, I ended up doing much better in his class. Yes it's true you'll need to do a lot of self teaching but it was no different than in other chemistry classes. His tests were much more reaosnable and very similar to practice problems, no big surprises. He told jokes and made the lectures seem kinda fun.
Lab is mostly run by your TA but Dr. List will pop in at times. Very responsive and accommodating if you have issues or need to make up something.
Lectures seemed to go at a slower pace than Todd's, and were much easier to follow. However, he doesn't give print out notes or super detailed power points so you actually have to go to class and pay attention. He spends a lot of time on examples, which can be really helpful even if somewhat tedious. Super nice guy and great in office hours too.
Definitely the easier orgo professor. There will be a lot of self-teaching no matter what, but he gives good practice problems that are similar to what will end up on exams and the tests are easier than Hare's. He also has a pretty generous grading scale (88 for A- and 92 for A) and if you go to class, you can get up to 4% extra credit from tophat
Dr. List is a fine lecturer for 1601. He doesn't write the tests so sometimes he misses stuff, but if you read the book you should be able to cover it yourself. Lectures are fairly standard, sometimes he'll make a good joke. If you put in the work as with any class you'll do fine with List.
The tests are the only thing that matter in this class. Also, List doesn't explain the material well, so reading the textbook is essential to passing. Very boring lectures and difficult tests. He at least tries to make the material somewhat interesting, but overall the lectures are pointless.
The class is test heavy and the material is very difficult. Dr. List does his best to teach during class but he is much better during office hours. His tests were much more reasonable than other org sections and very similar to book practice problems. He is one the better chemistry teachers at Vanderbilt.
Chemistry 1601 is by nature a challenging course. This definitely holds true, for there are standardized tests for all CHEM 1601 sections. These tests are difficult and make up the majority of your grade. However, Dr. List is a good professor who will cover the necessary material in lecture. At times he can be vague on expectations. You must study.
List's lectures are sometimes confusing and it's easy to get lost in the sauce because Chem 1601 covers so much. You definitely need to read the textbook to get a good grade, going to lecture is fs not enough by itself. But List is a good guy, such a dad and if you go to his office hours he's nice.
List is not the best choice for genchem. His lectures are a bit vague and not many in class examples. I relied heavily on the textbook, which is expected, but I wish that the lectures were more straightforward and informative. Do every single homework problem; it's really your only hope for the exam in this class besides understanding concepts
Although I enjoyed having List as my professor, I would not recommend him if you are someone who needs in depth explanations for chemistry concepts. No matter who you choose as your professor, gen chem is going to be hard. Find the professor that suits your teaching style. List did not fit mine.
For students who have already taken AP Chemistry, Professor List is a good choice. However, if you need a deeper explanation of the topics, it might be better to choose a different prof. He's super sweet and caring, but at times he seemed to be a little bit scatterbrained which could make it hard to learn.
Had him for orgo lab. Although labs are run by TAs, he did make a few videos for us due to covid so I did have him a bit more than those on an average year. Has an odd sense of humor but honestly, rather funny sometimes. Overall doesn't do much, but doesn't make the lab hard so I can't complain.
Dr. List is a good choice if you have taken AP Chem. He is funny and makes class enjoyable but because exams are the same for every class maybe not the best choice. Great guy, average professor.
The guy is a character but wastes an insurmountable amount of time saying the most out of pocket things I've ever heard. I learned more in my freshman year introductory high school chemistry course than I did this entire year. Material was rushed and List taught in such an unorganized fashion that concepts I USED to understand became confusing.
classic weed out class. tests are excessively hard and lectures are rushed. if you've taken ap chem, List is a decent option, but if you have minimal background knowledge, take someone like Todd who goes more in detail. study super hard for the tests.
Labs are run by TAs, so your experience will be highly dependent on what TA you are assigned. Reasonable workload for 1 credit lab. Reports were relatively straightforward, and had reasonable expectations. Procedures are well written and easy to follow. A word of advice, read the procedure ahead of time and learn to multitask: you'll get out early.
If you take orgo lab, your experience strongly depends on your TA that you are assigned to. However, List makes the structure of the class relatively easy by having online modules to complete before class with notebook prep. Afterward is a standard lab report. He tries to help the TAs as much as possible and is generally funny.
Dr. List is a very nice and a great guy but isn't the best teacher. He always seems a little unprepared and is often behind the other professor's lectures. His lectures are exact copies of the textbook, so reading the textbook is super helpful to doing well in the class. The class is very hard so pay a lot of attention.
Adam List has anger issues. A dude took a bite out of a kiwi 10 minutes before lab and the man exploded. He yelled at the kid to get out of the bay and slammed the door behind him, making the walls shake. Other than that, he occasionally appears behind you without warning to help fix your lab setup. He's like a spooky, bipolar teddy bear.
In honor of his last name being List I thought I'd make a list of things I like about orgo lab: ...
Professor List is great. He does tend to be a little behind the other professors in terms of content but I mean his lectures are hilarious(he's basically got ADHD so its fun to watch) and the one time I went in for office hours because I stopped paying attention in class he explained everything to me great. Dude is great would take his class again.
Professor List was often behind other Chemistry professor in content. He doesn't really go into depth when explaining the content during his lectures making it hard to properly understand. His lectures are usually straight out of the textbook, so therefore, his lectures are pointless.
Dr. List is one of the nicest professors I've had at Vanderbilt, but his class is also one of the most difficult that I've taken. Your grade is almost solely based upon your exam scores, and the homework is nothing like the quizzes or exams. Take advantage of the practice tests, as they are quite similar to the actual exams.
I didn't take chem in high school and I found List to be a great prof. I learned so much and always felt prepared for exams. He is behind the other lectures usually, but that's only because he takes time to make sure we understand the content. Overall, I enjoyed his class, but it's definitely hard and requires a lot of work.
Professor List is a nice and genuine person, but I found his lectures to be unhelpful because he dosen't explain concepts very well and barely does any practice problems. He was consistently behind the other sections because he took to much time doing Top hat questions rather than showing us test related examples.
Pros: - Humorous - Only 2 or so hours of work on non-test weeks. - Attendance isn't mandatory. Cons: - Unorganized - Often improvises examples, then gets confused and concedes that the example didn't work. - Uses other professors' assignments, which don't fully correspond to his lectures. Survival tip: - Homework is key to understanding content.
Prof. List was funny and overall nice guy. I've heard some criticism about him being behind the other lecturers but I really didn't think it was that bad. He's not the most organized, but I liked his lectures and overall it was pretty good. Fully understanding the homework is definitely an important part of being successful in this class.
Prof. List is very funny and energetic. He is behind on lectures but tries to make them make sense and answers any and all questions. Sat at the front and he would come up to make sure that we understood the practice problems. Would recommend sitting in the middle front! Chem1601 is itself hard but List makes it a bit enjoyable.
Dr. List is such a kind, wholesome guy! I really enjoyed having him this semester and would definitely take him again. His lectures aren't the clearest, but some supplemental practice outside of class will fix up any confusion. I really like that we get to discuss his TopHat questions and understand how to do them.
Honestly a great, understanding dude. Was sick a few times and he let me make up lab, tophat bugged out and he let me redo it, and my TA graded too harshly but I'm pretty sure List curved our specific section so I still ended up with an A. Seems intimidating at first, but funny dude and is very understanding of a student's situation. 5/5
Professor List covers the majority of the basic material in class, and takes his time going over simple examples which can be helpful. Overall, the class itself is difficult. In order to be prepared for exams you have to devote a lot of time to practice problems from the book and Aktiv hw and fully understand the material.
Cool guy and very helpful lab instructor. Walks around and helps out kind of like a chef in a culinary school. Good instructions and videos. Lab is not terrible.
Orgo lab is set up really well. Everything is clear and not graded by accuracy, which is a nice relief from gen chem. It all depends on what TA you get with grading tbh. Taylor is the goat
Orgo lab experience completely depends on your TA. But you'll see List occasionaly walking around the bays. He's friendly and will nicely remind you of lab protocol if he sees something wrong. Semester 1 orgo lab lowkey harder than semester 2. But again, orgo lab experience is completely dependent on which TA you get. Reports are generally chill.
Professor List is a funny and energetic lecturer, but his teaching style can be a bit unorganized. While the class is challenging, his approachable demeanor and willingness to answer questions make it more enjoyable. Utilizing Unstuckstudy and the free textbook alongside attending lectures is key to success.
List is a really good person, and you can tell he is well versed in chemical concepts. However, he is not the best lecturer. He tends to get lost working out problems, which can cause confusion surrounding major topics for the exams. He is willing to meet outside of office hours to discuss anything needing extra explanation.
List definitely has a good personality and the most character out of the other Gen Chem professors. Honestly he wasn't that bad, most of the difficulties I had were mostly with the class itself. Not a bad professor, but not a great one either.
Dr. List is a very caring and accessible professor; however, his lectures were not the best, and he often messed up example problems that were either corrected in class or had to be corrected later. General Chemistry will be hard no matter the professor, but taking a different one may be the best option for increased learning.
Lets keep it real. As kind and funny of a professor he is, he is unorganized and unprepared for class. Oftentimes, he was caught using the wrong formula or calculating incorrectly by a student or LA. Although mistakes are common, I simply believe there were too many for such a hard class. I had to read every chapter of the textbook to self-teach.
He's an average professor. Great personality, is good to get along with and is accessible. As for teaching, he lands right in the middle. He regularly messes up on math in class. Slides are not as informational as professors such as Tainter. Chem 1601 is a difficult course and the first test material is more complex than what is given in class.
I don't think List is too bad. He's a little disorganized, but I still understood most of what was being taught. Tips: review the material by reading the textbook before the lecture. It's helpful because you can usually treat the lecture like a review. Study with friends who are also in gen chem and go to lectures for the TopHat bonuses.
Not horrible, but you'll have better success in his class if you had previous exposure to gen chem. Tends to lose the plot, and sometimes works out problems incorrectly. Sort of just states the concept then works out a problem. Doesn't really prepare you for the exams, which are 75% of your grade.
Not a hard teacher, just a hard class. Very funny in class but his lectures and slides aren't great, take Tainter if you can. You can do well with him if you just study a lot on your own, the LAs help a lot too and he is open for office hours.
Would not recommend if you've never taken chem before - with some background, his lectures aren't too difficult. However, he is not very good at explaining things so that someone with no background could understand. He makes quite a few mistakes during lecture and usually slaps himself across the face when he gets something wrong.
The highlight of my life is when he taught the class how to scissor on the first day. He is truly ahead of his time
Great professor. Simple exams. Funny Guy. TAKE HIS CLASS
First exam was easier than any professor
Great guy. I love this class
Gen chem was best wit List. Great lecturer
Great professor. Love everything about this class. TAKE HIM
BEST PROF AT VANDY. TAKE HIM
Love this guy
GOAT Professor
He is the best orgo prof ever. Take him
decent prof, but might want to rely on textbook for most of your learning. gets a bit more conceptual than first semester, so get lots of practice questions in before exams
Dr. List is pretty average in lecturing ability, but he is really goofy. You'll have to self-study to get an A. Make sure to go to class for 15 bonus points (comes in clutch). Also go to coffee chats and do surveys for additional bonus points. Tests are the same between gen chem sections. Todd is probably better but grade depends on effort.
Though Dr. List hasn't taught orgo for a while, he is actually a good choice. His tests are more straightforward, and he tries to make the lecture more engaging and interesting by telling some jokes. He is also very caring and usually walks around to see if anyone has a question when doing tophat.
List isin't awful for orgo 2 but I wouldn't say he is good. You will need to rely on self-teaching A TON. His exams are easier than others but he doesn't prepare AT ALL. Sometimes it feels like he prepares you for the wrong exam (he told us we needed to know 4 mechanisms for exam 3 and put 1 on the test and it was one we didin't cover).
First time teaching OChem 2 in like 6 years and it shows. We were behind the other class by like 2 chapters. But he's a good lecturer and hes clear about he expects on his exams. If you are stacked on other classes, this is the section to take. If you want a comprehensive coverage of OChem 2 maybe not the best prof.
Dr. List is awful for Orgo 2. Despite not covering as much as the others, he is the only prof to not review before exams or go over what we need to know. His exams aren't awful but his communication abt them is abysmal. Finished writing the final the day of and lied abt what would be on it. Feels like he prepares you for a completely diff exam.
Does not curve even being a disorganized professor. He seems like a good guy but teaching wise he is terrible
In terms of Orgo 2, it isn't easy. If you want to actually know orgo in depth for chemistry purposes, don't take List. But if you're premed, orgo 2 is barely on the MCAT, and Dr. List is your best bet of getting a good grade. If you can teach yourself, you'll be set.
pros: - easier exams- 92 is A (except our final was highkey foul but i think he curved) - humble- he will give points back on tests if its reasonable - very helpful in office hours cons - disorganized ish - falls behind in lectures so some content was rushed but still on our midterm - not taught in a while so barely any practice exams
Very behind other sections and usually doesn't review for tests. Very nice and funny professor, dense lectures. His tests are easier than other sections but there is a lot of self teaching needed. Show up to lecture, the tophat points help!
I'm shocked to see others say he prepares you well for the exams bc I completely disagree. He told us we needed to know ~11 mechanisms for the final exam, and ended up putting none on it. He told us the multiple choice would be slightly more than prior exams but it was under 20% of the final (exam 2 was 46% and exam 3 was like 30%).
He's a nice guy but a disorganized prof. Lectures are manageable but he doesn't hold reviews for midterms and didn't provide his old exams for practice. Exams are ~easier than other sections, but not reflective of how much each concept was covered in lecture. If you can self-teach, you'll be fine. Friday quizzes + extra credit TopHat questions help
Easiest orgo 2 prof.
Not good. Pretty poor at emphasizing what would be on the tests. Cool guy, just not great to take for the intro course.
Orgo is simply a really hard class, but Dr. List makes it more manageable. I can't imagine doing as well as I'm doing if I took this class with a different professor. He moves slower than the other professors, tests are "easier", and he gives the most partial credit. Yeah, he messes up sometimes but he's just so nice so who gaf.
Definitely one of the easier orgo profs when it comes to exams, but not one of the better teachers. He's a little clumsy in lectures (forgetting things, making small mistakes), but he's a chill guy overall. Orgo is orgo though, and you're gonna have to learn a lot of stuff on your own anyway. Might as well take it w/ someone who gives easier exams.
I took Dr List for Chem 1 and Orgo 1, and he's my favorite. Yeah, he can get a little behind sometimes or make mistakes, but he is extremely responsive to emails and very helpful in office hours. He also puts very similar problems to the ones done in class on the exams. Love Dr. List!!
List is really goofy and a great person. Is he a little disorganized in lectures? Sure. But he still provides a good understanding of the material, beyond what we need to know, just for our understanding. Importantly, his tests are far easier than those of other profs. Read Klein, do all the problems, and you'll do well.
I enjoyed taking List! He has good office hours, silly jokes, and a nice grading system. His exams are also easier than other profs. However, he is disorganized and does not clearly state what will be on exams, which makes studying ahead hard. This is a majority self-study class, which is not a bad thing if orgo is your only difficult class.
cons: list tends to be disorganized which can leave you lost in lecture. sometimes he throws curveballs on exams, testing on stuff we barely went over. pros: list is definitely the nicest and funniest chem prof. also, his grading scale is very generous.
Funny professor and tries to keep class engaging. lots of self teaching and falls very behind. since he's behind, will sometimes speed through content to catch up. tophat questions help, but can be difficult. grading scale is harder than other professors(92=A). questions are more straightforward than other professors.
So nice, but not a good teacher. Unorganized and distracted while lecturing. He's good for students who have time to read the textbook before each class, but not for busy students who don't have that much time and want to actually learn in class! Mostly reviews topics vaguely with few practice probs. Tests were difficult but some partial credit.
Practice exams were practically identical to the ones given in class. Just memorize and you should be good.
