this class consists of 3 exams but they are very straight forward if you pay attention in class. Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post his notes so you need to go to get the information. He is very knowledgable and is more than willing to answer questions. Current events are a big part of this class so be prepared to discuss them in class
Newmark is a great professor. He brings current events into every class and wants class participation in discussion of them. There are three exams in the class that are pretty straightforward. He does use Mindtap for online quizzes each week that go along with in-class material and reading. Would definitely take a class with Newmark again.
This class was a little slow at parts but Dr Newmark is a great guy. He is funny and extremely knowledgable on all things politics. I know some people like that you can not tell what party he is or the stance he takes on issues.
Great choice. He goes above and beyond to answer you questions and make sure you understand. Tries to be funny, sometimes succeeds. He knows what hes talking about because he does a lot of outside research for the university and things like that. Large class, so if you want that participation credit you need to make sure he knows who you are.
Newmark is a really good professor; his lectures are pretty interesting even though the material for state/local bored me to tears. He is super knowledgeable and a good guy. Don't skip class because he doesn't post the power points, and his tests are like 80% lecture/20% textbook. Tests aren't that bad and overall the class was not hard.
Adam Newmark made a boring class fun and as long as you study and complete every assignment, you will pass. He assigns monthly newspaper papers- only two pages (double-spaced)- and as long as you met the word count, you get a 100%.
While Newmark's class and tests are very lecture heavy, he keeps the lectures engaging. He starts off every class with a discussion which is super refreshing. He's a fun dude that loves political science. There are only a few grades but if you study up on your notes and skim over the textbook you can get an A on his tests. Gives out easy 100s too.
Funny guy. Really great professor, love the class structure. Tests get progressively harder and include more material from textbook. Go to class for powerpoints, copy them down, you are good to go. One of my favorite professors at App. If you love dry humor, Newmark is your guy!
This was my favorite class this semester, and Dr. Newmark is one of my favorite professors during my time here at App. The man is so funny, and he is willing to help with anything you ask. The tests and term paper aren't easy, but if you put in the work, you will do good. I would definitely recommend him!
My favorite professor here. He has helped me grow as a political scientist. He is accessible outside of class and a great person all around. He cares about the students who put in the work, which you can expect to do. A term paper and two hard exams make up the grade in the class, and participation. You won't want to miss class though.
Dr. Newmark taught my first graduate class this semester. He understands that the first semester graduate students are not at the same level as the graduate students who are about to graduate, and grades accordingly. He makes himself available to students who are having concerns or struggling. He's tough, but an asset to the department.
Dr. Newmark is a great professor to take if you like to talk about politics. Can get off topic at the beginning of class when asking "What's going on in the world?" We talked a lot about national politics and this was a state and local government class. Overall I felt like I learned a lot from him and he was very understanding and accommodating.
Wasn't a huge fan of this professor. Makes you walk the strait and narrow and you are NOT allowed to touch or look at your cell phone unless you want a pop quiz for everyone in the class. In which, then everyone in the class is going to hate you. Honestly, did not learn much and would not take him as a professor again. So glad to be finished.
The class was interesting and definitely will learn a few if you're interested in majoring or getting a minor in PS. The class did consist of a few news paper articles you have to complete before your exams. But are fairly easy as long as they're done. He will give the class a pop quiz if someone is caught on their phone though.
THIS MAN ROCKS take this class it's the best class you'll ever take. If you dont show up to class you wont pass and the tests are hard but its SO worth it. he is so smart and funny and you will not regret taking this class
Dr. Newmark's lectures are super funny with a lot to learn. He has great stories to share. Super willing to help students and responds to emails well. There are 3 exams and 4 written assignments. Work load is light. Attendance not mandatory, but you won't do well on exams. Do the occasional reading, study, do the writing well and it's an easy A.
Dr newmark is funny and entertaining, but this class is Very hard. You're graded on 3 things: midterm, paper, and final. His tests are impossible, no matter how much I studied he always stumped me, and I am an A+ senior in all other courses. He does not offer guidance, its sort of just make sure you memorize everything, but hes fun.
Dr. Newmark is by far one of the best professors I have had to date. His lectures definitely keep you engaged, and he does a great job of being respectful to every student. One tip, go to class, if you do not go to class and miss the notes (he does not post them on ASU learn) there is no way you will do well, also read the textbook before the test
Dr. Newmark is very funny but very sarcastic. If you do not do well with that, do not take him. Not many things are fair in his class, 0 phones allowed, and he basically talks about nothing the first 30 minutes. He honestly drove me nuts and made a lot of things unfair.
Before this class, I was not knowledgable of all the things that go into local government. After this class, I am extremely interested in politics and current political events. Newmark starts every class talking about what is going on in the world today, which I absolutely loved. He can seem hard on the outside but he is a really nice guy!
Dr Newmark is very hard to listen to. I do not recommend.
Dr. Newmark is a wonderful professor! He is stern, but funny, and starts every class asking if anyone has any current events they want to talk about. His class is very lecture heavy, and if you dont attend class, you will be lost and will fail. But if you go to class, participate occasionally, and do your work, youll be fine. Hes willing to help
Dr. Newmark is fine I suppose. I have heard good things about him for higher level classes but cannot say that he is very good for PS1100. His class is essentially a long period of off-topic discussion for anywhere from 20-40 minutes then a lecture, but he pulls his lectures almost directly from the textbook. He is not very accessible outside class
Super monotone and sarcastic. Enough to where at times he can be pretty rude, like, anger issues kind of rude. Would never take him again.
Hes a very funny guy and the lectures can be very fun if youre into the subject matter, but the tests have a lot of stuff on them thats exclusive to the book, so dont forget it exists even though its not really mentioned in class. Basically no homework other than studying for tests and a term paper though.
The only redeeming quality he has is that his lectures can be kind of funny sometimes. Regularly threatens to write students up for plagiarism if even a single one of their citations is done incorrectly by accident. Only graded on 2 tests and a term paper, and the tests are mostly book material not even mentioned in the lectures. Do not recommend.
Doesn't let you take pictures of the sides during lecture but refuses to post any material or power points. Lectures don't line up with textbook so if you're not in class you have no way of getting the material. Told the class there was a pop quiz on uncovered material just to see everyone panic and laughed about it.
He truly is a master at what he dose. Please ask him questions and get help and PLEASE GO TO CLASS. Study hard and do the readings and it will end up well for you.
You'll have to write a 15 page research paper, but he helps you through it the whole way. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't go to lectures you won't do well on the exams. He is very nice, but is also a no nonsense professor. I really enjoyed his class and didn't feel overwhelmed by his workload.
Newmark is a great lecturer and professor. There's very few assignments, just four short papers and three tests throughout the semester and both are pretty easy to do well on. The tests come straight from his lectures and the textbook, so I would recommend reading the chapters before the test. Would definitely recommend
Really enjoyed his state and local government class. He knows his stuff and is more than willing to help. Your only graded by 4 writing assignments and three exams in this class. Overall he's a great professor and overall great guy!
Great professor. Very knowledgeable about political science. My only critique is that he does not prepare students for his tests as well as he could. But overall great guy, would take again.
I would highly recommend taking any of his classes. Really enjoyed his lectures and learned a lot about how state and local governments function. Very knowledgeable about many subjects and tends to keep bias out of the class. This was a class way outside of my major and ended up being my favorite one to attend!
Dr. Newmark is a good professor, however, his lectures are often boring and you must be in class to receive the notes. Tests are extremely easy if you study and they are all multiple choice.
An awesome dude, very personable with students, respects everyones opinion, also incredibly informative. There are only a few grades but as long as you but in the work you should do good, and he is willing to help out if you need help
There aren't many grades in this class, only 4 papers and 3 tests. However, the papers aren't difficult at all, being able to be completed within an hour. The tests aren't too difficult, just make sure to take notes in class, as they aren't accessible online. Do the papers and get a mediocre score on all your tests and you'll be fine.
Newmark is very knowledgeable about his subject and is very caring. However, his tests are hard and require a lot of work. If you're not a good test taker, don't take him.
Dr. Newmark is a fantastic professor in the field of policy analysis; Public Policy was engaging, and he always made discussions feel natural while still on-topic and. He is full of witticisms! Make no mistake; his courses are heavy on reading, ranging from 3-4 20-page articles to entire books expected to be read weekly.
Disorganized has few grades for class and the class structure is designed to be difficult to follow if you are absent. He does not share any notes they must come from attending class. This is a reasonable policy, but his PowerPoint notes are incoherent at best. He spends lots of time talking about his personal life, holding class overtime every day
Very respected in his field and engaging for those interested in politics. Neutral when talking about political matters. Tends to talk about his personal life sometimes-which you might find charming or annoying. Lectures are content heavy, and you will need to get the notes from someone if you miss one class. One of my favorite professors.
Tests are made a week before they're meant to be taken.Teacher cares more about cheating than his students passing his class. He posts the study guide at MOST a week before and tests you on things NOT ON THE STUDY GUIDE. Wont post the slides, wont let you record the slides, only hosted working Zoom meetings after a literal hurricane. Dont recommend
The lectures were confusing to follow, he often talked about his private life, would always have class run over late. I never felt like I knew what to expect for assignments and tests, but was always more concered about if we cheated than if we actually knew course material. i also feel like he expects students to know so much for half a semester
Newmark is a knowledgeable professor, but his tests are challenging. Attend class, take notes, and use Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook to prepare - that's the key to doing well in this course.
This is literally one of the BEST professors you will have in college. He wants his students to succeed and will help you through anything throughout the class. If you attend class and study you will do fine. Definitely take his class if you have the chance!!
Not a very good advisor. Only talked about how much he used to party back in college, never gave any insightful or helpful advice. His advising meetings only consist of him checking your DW and telling you the same information you find on the website. Like talking to a brick wall, only a brick wall wouldn't leave you feeling confused and misguided.
Gives good lectures but you reallyyyy have to pay attention to do well in this class. It isn't super hard if your willing to study a little bit every day to keep up. Focuses on a lot of current events so just be prepared to be in tune to the world.
Professor Newmark is incredibly helpful if you ask for it. Participation in discussion boards is highly encouraged and not difficult, he encourages you to think which is great.
If you are really passionate about current events then this class is for you. He is a tough professor and pariticpation is KEY in this class. Show up to class everyday for a chance at a good score and ask lots of questions and be attentative during lectures. He does tend to pass over views that are opposing his though. Good when only lecturing.
This professor is single handedly one of if not my least favorite I've had at App State. You're graded solely on participation, online textbook work, and 3 exams. If you have any sort of anxiety associated with test taking or public speaking… save yourself. My grade suffered because of this. I averaged a 95 in textbook work but still verging D.
He was cocky, and I didn't do too well on exams, but I could've done more on my end. His lectures were extremely interesting, although I dislike how he doesn't share them, or you can't take photos of them.m
