If I were to ever take a PLSC class again I would hope it would be with Dr. Nye. All of his lectures kind of blend together, but they're still very enjoyable. Reading & participation is mandatory. As long as you do what the syllabus asks you'll pass with nothing lower than a B
Do not recommend. Class is so boring it's hard to pay attention. Really made me hate constitutional law.
Don't believe the hype not an easy A!!! Could be an easy course but he makes test a lot harder then they should be. Very picky when it comes to short response questions! If you talk to him during office hours not helpful. Not a bad teacher just not an "easy"course.
Nye is hilarious. He is a great lecturer, and always tries to engage the class in a conversation and that makes it easier to learn. His exams are fair, as well as his quizzes. If you study, the class won't be too hard. You do have to read a lot, but Nye explains the key points from each reading very well. I hope to take another class with him.
Nye is a great lecturer and makes the sometimes dry content very inspiring and funny. The quizzes and exams are somewhat challenging, but not unfairly so. He also hosts a review session before each quiz and exam. Didn't really use the textbook, his lectures were usually sufficient to do well on the quizzes and exams.
Decent guy not a great professor. Very unclear grading, he'll say one thing and then completely go against that. Picks favorites. He also posts assignments super late and then changes due dates, or posts example assignments after the original was due. Super slow grader & will take off whole points for things like no capitalizing a word.
Adam is a decent guy. He is, however, the most awkward professor ever. It makes class very weird for a 9am. On top of that, participation is essential to your grade and determines if he will round your grade or not. He also bases lots of test questions on the readings so you HAVE to do them.
Probably the nicest and funniest professor I have ever had. The exams and quizzes are not super easy, and there are few assignments that make up your grade. The quizzes were harder than the exams because before every exam he had a review session. If you attend the review session it will be easy to get a B at the very least, if not an A.
Nye has a passion for teaching and makes class upbeat and interesting. His quizzes and exams are fair. Be ready to read though.
Dr. Nye is probably one of the nicest people you will meet. His humor is on par, his grading criteria are easy to follow, and he is very helpful in office hours. He will set agendas for the day, which is also really helpful. I would recommend taking classes with him, you won't regret it. Also, this is a no computer class, so get a notebook.
Dr. Nye is an awesome dude! He really makes learning enjoyable and is absoloutely hilarious. His classes are interactive and never boring. I was always genuinely excited to see what he had in store for us each class! He's a fair grader and gives his students every oppurtunity to succeed. Not to mention he gives out gifts every once and a while...
Adam Nye is that guy. Go to class everyday, participation matters at the end of the semester. He makes class so fun and interesting, it never drags on. I have him at 9:05 a.m. I once emailed him saying I failed an exam and I was "straight up not having a good time," and he excused my absence.
At first I really did not like Dr. Nye. I thought he was way too dry and boring but honestly as the semester progressed he's become by far my favorite professor. The man is absolutely hilarious and makes learning fun and enjoyable. Not to mention he's extremely knowledgeable on so many poli sci topics. If you're lucky you'll meet his bird grant!
Took this class for a humantiites credit and wasnt what I expected. Exams were open note since zoom but everytime there was a handful of questions I couldnt find anywhere in the lecture notes. This was because he gives you lots of reading for each section and pull specific questions from that and the videos from participation assigmentnts.
Terrible grader
He's a fine guy. The test and quizzes are easy. But the essays are the problem. One wrong word and he'll give you a 1/5 on your essay. Also, same thing on the homework's. Doesn't matter if you know everything about the subject. If you have a sentence fragment. He'll drop your grade even more.
Funny guy, but good luck if you have him. We spent more time looking at pictures of animals he found on campus than actually learning the material. The quizzes and exams usually have nothing to do with the information on his review sheets. He also grades you on how much you talk in class, so if you are a quiet student, this professor is not for you
This is my third class with Dr. Nye and I will be taking him again in the spring! Your grade depends on 3 quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final, and your participation in class. He hosts reviews for the quizzes and exams as well as making everything very easy to understand. He is very understanding, has a dry (but good) sense of humor, and is my fav prof!
Dr. Nye is a great professor and very reliable. You knew exactly what to expect from quizzes and exams and as long as you study you will do well. He expects participation and attendance but really cares about his students.
Structures the syllabus where a lot of the points come from discussion posts and quizzes. You read several lengthy articles to then answer 50 specific questions on the exam, that come from the quizzes but you don't get to see the correct answers after the quiz. I don't think you learn anything truly applicable. Don't take, a waste of time
AMAZING professor, goes over all of the exams in great detail before and after so that we are best prepared. You have to do the readings to get a good grade, but the lectures are about more than just the readings which makes the class interesting. really really nice guy, especially if you communicate with him.
I had Nye for two classes. 471 is a hard class, wish I hadn't taken it. Don't worry about the textbooks, it only accounts for 2-3 questions on every quiz/exam. His humor is dry. Participation matters. Do the course reserve readings. Participation assignments in class can hurt your grade, so don't miss them. Take something else if you can.
I had two classes with Nye. 473 is much better than 471 with him. He talks about the same stuff all semester, so just get a general grasp and you'll be fine. Don't buy the textbooks. Do the course reserve readings. Attendance is important for the participation assignments he does. Not understanding if you miss a class.
Dr. Nye is a funny professor and is good at keeping a class engaged. He held study sessions before the exam which helped a lot. Attend class and take notes and you will be fine. Participation is important so make sure you talk and answer questions.
Hes such a nice guy and his lectures were fun to listen to but he graded us on basically just quizzes and exams which i think didnt really promote learning just memorization which made it hard to keep up with honestly wish I never took this class its gonna ruin my GPA :/
Professor Nye is just your average funny guy. His lectures are funny and he makes dumb jokes that make everyone laugh through his lectures. He is very knowledgeable about his lectures. He does review sessions over Zoom for quizzes and tests so you can go over the material. He is very accessible outside of class and very willing to help you out.
Nye is one of the best professors out there. I highly recommend him. Before ever class he makes dad jokes. They're a hit or miss. Overall great guy not that many people raise their hands but if you know the answer raise it high and he will call on you. Quizzes and exams are easy, he does participation videos with a small assignment to get points.
Dr. Nye was my first professor here at PSU and he was amazing. He always tried to keep class interesting. His lectures aren't on the reading so reading is a MUST. There is a lot of it. He really cares about his students and if you just talk to him and ask for help he's always willing to give you a hand. Participation is important in this class also
Prof. Nye was a great teacher. His classes are very lecture heavy. Class were a bit boring but tolerable. We only used the textbook for Unit 2.Exams and quizzes were based on notes and readings. Attendance is mandatory. Hosts review sessions for exams and quizzes that were helpful. If you can take Prof. Nye, he cares about his students.
Dr. Nye is an all-around funny, nice professor. Quizzes and exams are lecture heavy, but he tells you exactly which topics will be included. The reading comes from some court cases and the textbook, which may take a while, and they are mostly included in the tests. Attendance and participation are encouraged and a part of your final grade.
His lectures are super clear which makes the tests and quizzes pretty easy. Just do the required readings and pay attention in class and you'll be totally fine.
Wouldnt recommend all you get graded on is showing up and the exams and quizzes and the questions are purposefully trying to trick you i dropped this class instead of taking a C which would have ruined my gpa nice guy and super kind but i care about my grade and learning more than kindness didnt learn anything and wasted my money
After 4 years Dr. Nye is my favorite professor at Penn State and is head and shoulders above any other Poli-sci professor here. What I appreciate most is his clear and informative lecture style. If you attend class, pay attention, and take decent notes you'll be set. If you're a no-nonsense student who wants to learn and do well, Nye is your guy
Dr. Nye is, in my experience, one of the best political science professors at PSU. His class is funny, engaging, and well-structured. He is upfront about his expectations and grading policies, and as long as you attend the lectures and review sessions, you will be set. If you ever get the chance to take one of his class, I highly recommend it!
trust me, hes hilarious. raise your hand a few times and dont miss class because theres participation assignments. quiz/test always same format. MC and matching section (always tells you what the matching is on). material is easy-ish. he always has review sessions and practice quiz/test. def need to study a little bit to get an A in the class
Professor Nye has some pretty dry dad humor. The fact that no one gets the joke for about 5 seconds is what makes him hilarious. The actual class itself is simple and easy to understand. Go to class because he takes attendance and has participation assignments. The exams are somewhat difficult. Do the readings and go to the study sessions.
some questions on the quizzes/exams were so specific to the in class videos or reading, it was kind of ridiculous but overall they were not too bad. j make sure you go to class and watch the review videos. (also didnt really read any of the reading n was fine). There's no hw which is great but unlike others I find his "humor" insufferable.
Never read the textbook and was fine, some questions on the quizzes/exams were v specific to the videos or reading and I think that's unfair but for a 400 level class it was def on the easier side. j go to class, participate, and watch the review videos and u can get an A- or A
Dr. Nye was an amazing professor to have. The quiz and test questions are very specific but as long as you know the material you will get a good grade in the course. Dr. Nye knew every single one of our names in the class so he really does take time to know his students and it makes the class very enjoyable. Take him if you can!
Show up to class because I regret not going and it affected my grade. His tests are kind of hard because the questions dive a bit deeper than surface-level information. Lectures are a bit boring but he's a good guy and it's tolerable. I'd take Nye again if I could.
Took this because I thought it would have some applications in the real world. It is a glorified history course, the practice tests and participation assignments are absolutely nothing like the quizzes or exams. Its all based on lectures, videos, and readings that you have to view outside of class time. Will tank your GPA. Beware.
Fine teacher, tries to get class engaged and participate, a little odd but nice. Explains things well but a lot is left up to you to learn and understand. A nag about attendance and stingy with excused absences.
Definitely take his leap PLCS 1, he did such a good job of easing his class into college level work, and he always made sure to stop and check in with his students. It was not hard to get 90s on his exams, and his homeworks were a little annoying but doable. Amazing dude, loved his lectures.
By far the worse professor I have ever had. Don't teach anything but expect us to do everything.
Prof. has definitely changed compared to previous reviews; he is not reflected accurately. Tests are incredible ambiguous and vague. Super subjective and cherry picks when grading. Doesn't use a rubric when grading. Unnecessarily hard for a 200 level class. Will grade major papers late and give vague feedback. Heed the warning- will kill your GPA.
Such a sweet professor. His quiz/exams are very specific. Attendance and participation is mandatory but gives the option to email him your thoughts on the lecture for credit, which I loved. He does in class assignments at least once a week and you literally just answer questions from a video he shows. One of the best poli sci profs I have had here.
Objectively the best professor at PSU. Expectations are clear, material is taught thoroughly, and you just can't help but like him. Avid wildlife enthusiast.
really super nice, cracks awkward jokes and they're lowkey funny. my biggest problem was his lecture style. so monotone. so slow. so hard to focus. other than that, really easy class; participate, study for the quizzes and exams, you'll be fine.
I love this professor so much. The class is super easy if you just go to the lecture and take notes. Lots of questions are similar to practice exams/in class questions. Required attendance but he's understanding if you email him ahead of time. No homework, grades are quizzes, tests, attendance, and participation. So funny & seems to cares about us.
Dr. Nye is a good professor. The class is challenging at first, but once you figure out how to study you'll be fine. 3 quizzes/3 exams (lowest quiz dropped), & no hw. Tests are very specific to textbook, lectures, and videos. Go to class and participate—it really matters & will affect your grade in the end, he's not very understanding w/ absences.
