He is a very nice philosophy teacher. Thought his midterm was easy even though you were not allowed to use your notes on it. Make sure you atleast pay attention to when he lectures and try to participate and you will do fine :)
He reads his notes alot, looks up and will ask the class questions. He's very nice and will help you if you have a problem with the work. Theres a paper, midterm, final, and a response paper. There's reading, but he will end up explaining it to you later in class.
He reads from his notes, i dropped his class after 2nd lecture, he will literally read typed up pages he has, more than half of my class slept during lecture, so if u dont understand anything from first reading he assigns u on first day than drop as it worth less even when he explains as again he just reads the explanation.
He literally reads off of his notes and if you ask him a question, he'll answer that's about to come. HORRIBLE TEACHER. seems as if he's got all the philosophers jumbled in his head. DO NOT RECOMMEND. NO one pays attention in his class because its nearly impossible to listen to his boring voice.
No textbook necessary. He provides all the readings for you. A long reading assignment is assigned for every class but no homework. I thought i was going to fail this class, but I have gotten As so far. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours and is always willing to help. He has a passion for philosophy although most of the class does not
Nice professor who tries to help students understand philosophy. He does ramble endlessly at his notes then looks up then back at his notes again. Class is kinda easy. I passed with an A- and didn't quite like the class.
If you're looking for a class to do other homework in, this is the Professor to take (I'm in his class right now and am working on my english paper instead) VERY VERY VERY boring man. Reads straight from his paper, even writes down his jokes, and reads them AWKWARD! 2papers, response paper, and midterm (only bonus)
I thought people were kidding when they said he reads straight from his notes, but he does it for EVERY word. However, I would recommend him for philosophy since attendance isn't mandatory, you don't have to pay attention, and you only need to do 3 papers and a midterm all year. Just don't expect him to be exciting.
absolutely the WORST professor in st johns. He thinks only 2-3 out of his entire class should get an A, which makes it even harder to achieve an A. Doesn't seem that educated in his field. And his office hours are no help at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He might as well be the worst teacher on campus. I took him this semester & on the first day of class I knew this wasn't going to be good. He reads his notes word for word and doesn't really explain the context to the class. He expects us to magically understand. I wrote an opinion based essay & said I plagiarized. Is that even possible?I dropped
People who complain about him reading his notes really underestimate the complexity of the arguments he assigns to us. It doesn't even make sense that you complain about it because his notes are very clear. He's a good professor, he'll be willing to help you if you ask for it, even if you're late or absent (you will still be penalized though).
His lectures are incredibly boring, but taking notes is key to passing his classes. Papers are pretty straightforward and so are his exams.
No textbook. Its true, he reads from his notes the entire class and doesn't stop until the class ends, right on the minute. Attendance isn't mandatory but he will call you out if you miss a lot of class, it's kind of funny to see. A few papers that he grades fairly but not too easily. I did absolutely NONE of the required readings and had B+ papers
Overall I'd take him again! Lectures are very boring since he reads straight from the paper. His class consists of 2 papers, an in class midterm essay and a 5 page finalpaper. Hes extremely helpful and if you go to him with your paper he helps you fix it. Got A- on every paper and never took notes or paid attention. Just show him you're trying!
If Hell truly exists and I've been condemned to live there for eternity, this guy's lectures is what I would have to endure. He reads straight from his notes, he's BORING, a really really tough grader and overall a lousy teacher. DON'T TAKE HIM! Although he gave me a B+, his class was a low point of my Freshman Year.
I honestly hated this class. The lectures felt like forever. Also, he reads directly from his notes. DIRECTLY. Word for word. It's as if, he write the notes in a form of a speech. The papers weren't that difficult and attendance isn't mandatory. Overall, just a big hour of sleeping.
Personally, I loved Professor Ring! If you actually pay attention for the hour and half you have him, you can learn so much in his class. He really cares about the subject and it shows. Sure he talks the whole class but it is on a really great topic if you can pay attention! If you zone out a little bit, you'll be lost though. Id take again.
He only gives a few papers to complete the entire semester, and they're pretty easy if you just use the his noteswordslectures. You don't need to do the readings to pass.
He is a really good professor. He talks for the whole class time but he speaks clearly so it's pretty easy to understand what we were supposed to have read for the homework assignments. You don't really have to read the given assignments and he doesn't really check attendance after awhile. He's really nice. I wouldn't mind taking his class again.(:
He's really nice!! Willing to answer questionsemails fast. He's also really smart and knows his stuff. You can tell he cares about his students. Likes to ask for your opinion. The pacing felt a bit fast since we learned about one philosopher per class. Love that all the reading text is online and free.
He talks forever and expects you to magically understand what he's talking about. I was confused for most of the semester. I literally learned nothing.
You have to beg for help. Confusing. Hardest thing I have ever done
I can't stand this man. Worst professor I have taken at St. John's. He seems nice upon impression but he really isn't a nice person. His class is BORING, he doesn't really believe in giving A's and if you're not the first person to come up with your argument he won't really believe that on your own intelligence you came up with it.
He's a cool dude. His lectures are pretty boring and he talks the whole time but he's really nice. He picks on random people so you should pay attention as much as you can but if you give a minimal answer he's pretty happy with it too. Bring other work to do because the class drags. 4 papers, no midterm or final. Really helpful and wants you to pas
3 papers all semester & one short response paper, due at the most reasonable times, like you have MORE than enough time. Long lectures/boring, but if you pay attention, you learn SO much. It's just a matter of applying critical thinking skills/putting effort. People judge him harshly but he's incredibly helpful when you seek help. Straight A's :))
The class was easy and he's very nice. The lectures can be a little boring
Lectures are fairly long but he opens up for opinions here and there. Reading material is provided so no textbook! Participate a couple times, do the 3 main papers and 1 response paper, and you're set.
Lectures are long but you need to pay attention because he picks on you for participation. No textbook and assigns a couple of papers. He teaches well and you definitely leave knowing new material. Would take again.
All you have to do is raise your hand once a class and write three reasonable papers. Easy A.
Very long lectures every single class. literally talks for an hour and a half. however easy class. 3 papers and 1 response paper. no midterm no final.
Great guy with very long lectures. You will or want to fall asleep at least once. Besides that, he is a great teacher. Helps you out when you are lost. Class is just essays and responses. Raise your hand, he likes and actually grades on participation a decent amount. Also says "right" a lot, haha. Good class if you can endure long lectures.
He goes so fast during class, really hard to take good notes. He also doesn't explain very well and expects you to understand. When he calls on you he picks at you and keeps trying to prove you wrong. If you like philosophy and having every little thing challenged, take him. Papers are fairly easy if he gives out the handout first that explains it.
First Paper(2-3): 20%, Second Paper(3-4): 25%, Response Paper(4 100 Words): 15%, Final Paper(4-5): 30%, Participation/Attendance: 10%. Grades very well and wants you to really learn PHI. He also gets the point across and is a great debater. Also allows you to chill and doesn't expect much. Do assignments on-time, raise your hand, and get an A.
a very boring class. He just lectures for the ENTIRE time. If you aren't paying attention he will most likely call on you. No tests, just papers, but they are graded very harsh. Very hard to get good grades on them. He also asks your opinion about the argument at hand, yet he always seems to shoot whatever you think down.
This class was manageable but didn't look forward to coming at all. He doesn't let you make your own arguments but will put you on the spot to answer his questions and then ultimately make you feel like you're wrong. Uses the full time lecturing. Don't really have to read. Take good notes on his lectures to help on your papers. Not the best class.
Class is very boring. He lectures for literally the entire class and goes until the last possible minute. In regards to his papers, he grades them very harshly. There is little room for partial credit when he grades you either write what he says and teaches or your wrong. Not the greatest class ive taken this year.
Easy A in my opinion. Took him Fall 2015. Very easy essays as long as you see him during office hours. Passed the class without even trying. Need to take notes to do well. He says UM AND UH ALOT. You must see him during office hours to pass. I passed without trying but friend who didn't go to him failed even though she copied off of my final essay.
I actually like Ring's class. You only do three essays, plus one response paper that is literally a page. All you have to do is pay SOME attention in class, write your essay visit him during his office hours so he can see it and then call it a day.
Professor Ring's class is extremely long and boring. He never lets you out early so expect to be there till the very last second. No book, all the readings are on blackboard. He goes on and on for an hour and a half. Only calls on people if he sees they aren't paying attention at all. Tough grader, criticizes everything if you don't agree with him.
He calls on people randomly, usually people in the back and makes them feel wrong despite giving an opinion. He talks really fast so difficult to follow along. I didn't really do the readings just used them for the papers. Only 3 papers and I didn't find that he graded them harshly. Just go to class, raise your hand and take time to write papers.
Honestly not a bad teacher, i don't know why everyone is bashing him. Only have to right 3 papers and thats it for work all year. Show up to class, pay attention, and you'll do fine. really not that difficult of a course if you just show up and show that you put a little effort in.
adam is a cool dude i cant complain, theres 4 major papers and attendance, you dont really have to do the reading if you take good notes, he'll read over all your papers when you go to office hours and thats how you get an A hes really straightforward, my friends thought he was annoying but just get on his good side i guess
these other ratings don't give Adam Ring enough credit... he's honestly the man. Put a little effort during class and wrote 3 papers A. He is accessible for office hours (must utilize in order to get an A! super helpful). Not an argumentative man and will always be more than willing to re-explain his lecture points in class. Class flies by.
He's a good professor. He really cares about participation so make sure you do. If you want an A in his class ask lots of questions and write great papers
3 papers. One final. If you apply yourself you can get an A. He breaks down the readings and answers questions when there is confusion. I liked his class and I would choose to take his class again...
entire course- only three papers to write. He is honestly really chill. Doesn't dismiss class until the last second. Take good notes because his lectures explain the readings assigned every class. I never did any of the readings, and his lectures were basically a sparknotes on the readings. Go to him office hours and participate in class. Take him
He's the nicest professor ever! He's clear about his grading which is good because it's easy to know what you'll end up getting in the class. He only gives 3 papers and a final paper so it's not really a lot if you slip up on one. If you ask, he'll give you a 24 grace period to submit any paper. All he's asking is for you to participate in class!!!
He was one of my favorite professors, he is so nice and so funny. He explains everything very well. Don't be afraid to participate and ask questions. He will help you understand everything, he's always on schedule with it. His lectures are a full hour and 30 min but goes by fast if you participate.
Took him for PHI 1000C. He's an amazing and funny professor. His lectures are very informative. Has really good discussions. Readings are manageable, I recommend doing them so that you have an easier time doing his essays. Only gives 3 papers and some short response assignments. Go to his office hours to help you with your papers. Participate!
Great professor. Only 3 papers and one short response assignment. U will learn a lot in his class. Go to his office hours and do the readings. If u don't have time, don't stress out, he will go over them in class. spend some time doing your papers b/c he expects you to write a good philosophical arguments especially in the second and final paper.
Hes a cool professor. Most philosophy professors are boring so a rating in the 3s is pretty good. He makes you work for your grade. I took no notes skipped about 4 classes and got an A. The key is to use his office hours and research other papers on the topics he gives. Its pretty Straight forward. Dont expect to not work and get an A.
One of my favorite teachers in my second semester. He made philosophy interesting. Most kids stopped showing up to class halfway thru the semester but I showed up. Be sure to proofread before submitting your papers (there are 3) and insert your opinion in class- he gives great feedback. No opinion is wrong.
Professor Ring was great, only three real paper and one short one, very straightforward assignments. His lectures are incredible and he is very caring about his students. Would definitely recommend, the content of the class is very interesting and his passion for the subject material makes it even more interesting.
he acts like the 1000 level class is an advanced level philosophy class. he grades papers harshly. and if you dont go to this office hours he will purposely give you less of a grade. he's nice/smart person to have a discussion with, but poor grader and has lack of sympathy for students trying to fulfill their requirements to graduate. unsatisfied.
Solid choice for Philosophy 1000C. I was skeptical at first based on his ratings. 3 total papers each worth a certain amount, 1 reflection assignment. Doesn't give quizzes, tests or use a textbook. All of his readings are on blackboard. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, he will tell you how to get a better grade on your paper. Turned my C- paper into an A-
I did not like this professor at all. I was looking forward to philosophy but he ruined it for me. He is a very tough grader and he talks too fast so it is very hard to take notes. I went to his office hours a lot and told me what I needed to fix to get an A, but, I still got a B+. He looks for the smallest things to take points off for. Dont take.
A lot of people say hes a tough grader and that you shouldnt take him, but if you want an educational experience over an easy A take him. Do the papers, go to his office hours so he can help you get a better grade, and participate a lot. You can get an A- on all the papers but participate and get an A. He is very knowledgeable and worth taking.
As long as you do the readings and pay attention to the lectures youll be fine. He only grades you based off of the papers you write.
His lectures are really captivating. I like the fact that he doesn't make you buy a textbook. He explains all of the readings he assigns.
I recommend not taking this professor-he is an extremely tough grader, and doesn't respect anyones opinion if it doesn't match his. He accused me of plagiarizing an essay worth 25% of my grade, when I very clearly proved to him that I didn't-but still didn't give me the opportunity to prove my validity which lead me to have to drop the class.
Love this professor. He really makes you think about your view on the readings he assigns and he goes in depth in class. He gives a lot of time for us to write our essays and he has office hours that can help. You won't even have to read the readings if you listen in class.
I took this professor as it was required for my major as well as a core credit. I was nervous as some of his reviews were negative. However, the work load in this class is minimal and there's only four essays which aren't too long (about 1,000 words each). The class is lecture heavy and can get boring but if you pay attention you'll be able to pass
Professor Ring is very insightful about philosophy, but all he does is lecture. He sometimes will target you in class to see if you're paying attention. He is a very tough grader, and doesn't really accept other people's opinions. If you like philosophy, you will enjoy the class but if you don't it will be very boring. I don't recommend taking him.
4 papers (1 of which is the final) and they are completely doable! You don't even have to do the readings at all. Literally for an A: 1) show up to the lecture and raise your hand every now and then 2) take notes during lecture (he basically Spark notes the readings for you) and 3) go to his office hours for some help with the papers.
Great professor! Some lectures are boring but others are really eye-opening. Only need to read readings on blackboard for 4 essays (that's the only work!), he breaks down the readings in class though. I knew he was a tough grader going in so tried hard on essays and did well. He does randomly pick on people that don't participate.
He's a really good professor if you learn through lectures. I really enjoyed his lectures because they were basically him explaining the paper for you. Only wrote like 3 papers and one homework assignment. He grades a little harshly but if you put in effort he will see it. Also participate a lot to get his attention.
Adam Ring is a fine professor. He just lectures. That said, he will call on people randomly. His papers were easy if you paid attention in class. The worst thing he did to me was make me feel wrong every single class I was there. He made me feel horrible, but I guess it was fine since I still got an A
He is an awesome professor! I absolutely love him. I had him for online classes and although his group office hours were optional, I highly recommend going to them. They helped with understanding the recorded lectures and it was just fun to just go to.
I took his online class which was nice, so I did my work whenever. Weekly discussions and you have to respond to people which were not bad just put in the work and you will do fine. Final essay is a little hard so make sure to start early. He isn't too harsh of a grader and is there to help if you ask him a question. Nice guy, recommend his class
Professor was very hard to understand sometimes. Usually felt as if the answers he wanted was only his own answers. He was nice but he really went into detail for everything. Sometimes understand where he was going with stuff.
Please take the reviews you read about Prof. Ring with a grain of salt. I don't even know my grade for his course yet, but he's been one of my favorite profs this semester despite barely speaking to him. Yes, lectures are heavy, but so insightful. My only advice is to attend office hours! He's a chill guy and respects all opinions :)!
He is a caring professor and the class is pretty easy to follow along. As long as you join class, participate and do the weekly discussion board you will be fine. He explains topics very well and is very clear on assignments. Very informative and easy going.
his grading policy is literally a god-send and his lectures are posted to canvas for you to watch before class. his videos explain the readings so well, and in-class discussions are always interesting. make sure you put in effort for the weekly papers and you'll definitely get full credit. please take him if u get the chance!
my favorite thing about this class when I took it in the fall was that there was no final; just weekly papers that are about 2 pages double spaced and that is it. he is kind of a harsh grader but I went to his office hours for almost every paper and he literally helps you fix whatever he thinks should be fixed so that you get a perfect score.
Just watch the videos before you write the paper. Take an hour for the paper and then Grammarly it when your one. 12 papers 400 words minimum (they're really light). Easy A take him
Prof. Ring was honestly a great professor to have for my first philosophy class. Four small papers per writing portfolio and takes your three best papers to decide your grade for each portfolio. Three portfolios for the semester that each account for 30% of your grade. The other 10% is class participation. No tests. Pay attention in class, easy A.
Professor Ring is a great guy and the class was very well that it actually made me like philosophy. Weekly papers (400 words ish) for each lesson but are easy to do if you pay attention in class. Participate!!! No final and no midterm. He is accessible for help through emails, after class, office hours. Definitely recommend taking him!
Professor Ring was one of my favorite professors I've had this year. His class is lecture style but he includes group discussions during the lessons. In order to do well on the papers (once a week), you MUST watch his additional videos he uploads. You do have to put in the work though. He's also always available for help. No midterm or final exams!
Professor Ring was one of the best professors I've had! His essays were so interesting that it made you want do them. He had video lectures posted on Canvas that were very easy to understand and well-made. His classes and assignments were always very organized, very interesting, and to the point. He made me discover my love for philosophy!
He does a good job at explaining the material during class, so I definitely recommend writing down what he says and using some of his points when it comes to writing essays for his class. I think we only had a few essays the whole semester and no homework. Definitely recommend him.
12 papers but if you do well you'll only be graded on 9. He's understanding and grades fairly. In class, he might ask for opinions & I've heard students say absolute garbage and he turns it into something that makes sense so don't be afraid lol. Also, ask questions through discussions or feedback!! A bit hard to understand his talking on the spot.
Take Professor Ring. Super passionate and knowledgeable about the topics. The class was very easy going as there are no tests, quizzes, midterms, or finals. He grades you on papers you will complete once a week which are super easy if you pay any sort of attention. He is super kind and his class is extremely laid back, but still very interesting.
Professor Ring is outstanding! His writings and discussions compelled you to want to accomplish the work Philosophers outlined. His lectures were available as high-quality videos on Canvas that were simple to follow along with. Everything he taught and assigned was well-planned, engaging, and purposeful. I owe my appreciation of philosophy to him.
By far, one of the most caring and understanding professors I've had. Honors section, so 3 papers per semester and 12 total discussion posts, but they were well paced. His recorded lectures were short and sweet, got to the point effectively. His teaching made philosophy interesting. He was understanding about late assignments and gave good feedback
Honestly his class is an easy A, you might be lost in class, but you don't need to listen to him that much because he posts all the material you could just watch/read at home. There is not final or midterm just weekly one page reflection papers for each unit. Also, there was no final or midterm. I would take him again.
There are weekly assignments that have material he posts online but they are so easy. Attendance is somewhat important but you can get everything you need from the Canvas.
Professor Ring is one of the best, if not the best professor at SJU. Highly recommend him no matter what, extremely lenient w/ assignments and always wants his students to get the best possible grade.
Very monotoned. His class is one huge discussion based on his posted lectures so you must watch them in advance. There is a paper every week but they don't get graded before the next one is due. He is lenient but I do not recommend if you have a busy schedule. Participation and adding to the discussion is VERY important.
Professor Ring was nice and tried keeping his class active as possible. There are papers every week but he drops lowest grades if you do extra. No homework or tests ever. He will help if you ask for it and answers emails fast enough.
prof ring is easy going and attendance isn't mandatory. his lectures are really boring and he places a big emphasis on participating. his papers are a little confusing, and he is a harsh grader, but there are no tests or quizzes. he is sweet and would gladly help you if you are struggling
Professor Ring is very passionate about his classes and does a great job at explaining the material. Participation is a big part of the grade, but there were no test or quizzes. Grades were based off of papers, and the lowest score was dropped if you did an additional one. I would recommend his class and would definitely take it again!
Avoid at all cost! If you have no other choice, invest in good noise cancelling headphones, be prepared to get terrible grades on papers you went the extra mile on, and know that if you dont participate in his extremely boring discussions multiple times per class, you wont get a good grade. Worst professor I've had to date, and my class can agree!
Easy A if you out in effort with a very passionate professor. He gives feedback, you just have to ask. Participation helps you understand the course better and will help you with the reflection papers. Great professor!
Prof. Ring explains exactly how to get an A, write 2 essays (you get 4 chances at this per month), and participate often in class. Participation is literally free points, it's so easy. For the essays, just follow the prompt; most of the time, it's agree/disagree. His lectures are a yapping session though, so occupy yourself when not participating.
The professor was very passionate about philosophy. He doesn't give out any tests instead he does unit portfolios for each unit. The unit portfolio is composed of the top 2 grades of your pervious papers for that unit. He takes into account participation and is a major part of your grade. Really easy class but very boring as he just talks a lot.
These good reviews scare me, they honestly seem like they're from Professor Ring himself. His classes were awfully boring, he grades extremely harsh, and you HAVE to participate in each class to have a chance of getting a good grade. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! You were warned! These other reviews are him!
Easy A class. Just participate and do your homework and you'll get an A. Simple and easy.
Professor Ring is great if you aren't lazy. He is very passionate about philosophy, and as long as you participate once or twice each class, you'll be fine. There are 3 units and 4 papers per unit (one a week), but he averages out each unit grade by your highest 2 papers; just put the effort in, and you won't have to write more than that per unit.
He's very unbiased about your honest opinion as long as you answer the prompt in the reflection paper. He posts videos explaining the lesson about the philosophers which is very helpful and you can ask all your questions in class. As long as you participate at least once every class and do 2 reflection papers per unit you should get an easy A.
Professor Ring is the definition of a professor who knows they're terrible, yet change nothing. His class is incredibly easy; but the issue is it's hard to find a way to genuinely engage in the class until he reminds you that your participation is also graded. His lectures are monotone and non engaging, and he's very passive aggressive. Bad grader
I felt like Professor Ring cared about his students. He was one of the few professors who went out of their way to learn our names. Participation was heavily graded, but commendation was easy due to the inviting atmosphere. Some days the conversation is boring, but others it's really interesting.
Professor Ring is a passionate and engaging instructor. While the course workload can be heavy, his clear feedback and structured assignments make it very manageable. Lean on resources like unstuck study and you'll do well.
This professor gave lots of papers and did not give feedback. He makes no sense when he teaches. I would not take this class again.
Really nice guy, clear grading system. A lot of your grade is dependent on class participation. He assigns 4 simple papers every month, and drops the lowest 2 grades out of the 4 monthly papers. Take him
Professor Ring is literally the best — TAKE HIM!! For each unit, you have a choice between writing two reflection papers or a unit portfolio. He is very accessible outside of class if you're struggling, and he genuinely cares about your opinions and perspectives on the course material. Make sure to participate since its a part of your grade
